Dry spring has climatologists looking at drought possibilities for summer

2023.06.05 01:06 Moses_Horwitz Dry spring has climatologists looking at drought possibilities for summer

In case you don't know, it rains - a lot - in the Pacific Northwest (USA). In fact, on the coast of Washington state is the Hoh Rain Forest. So in the spirit of fear, we get the following highlighted statements.
I should mention the west of the Cascades is an area containing several large lakes and salt water (e.g., Puget Sound, Lake Samamish, Lake Washington, etc). It's very green west of the Cascades however the eastern side of the Cascades is desert-like. Perhaps they are conflating reservoir content with the needs of the eastern Cascades but measured by rainfall on the west of the Cascades (SEATAC) where rain is blocked by, you know, the Cascades. Shrug.
... So far, we're told we don’t have to worry about our water supply.
"No we're not in drought, but we are watching the water supplies and stream flows with quite a bit of interest because of May's weather," said Washington State Climatologist Nick Bond.
... You can add to that the rapid melt off of our snowpack due to a warm and dry May.
Note: we have reservoirs but with a growing population we chose (refuse?) to build more because, you know, environmentalism.

2023.06.05 00:48 sierpc Battle of Kuril Islands

Battle of the Kuril Islands
As a result of winning the Ukrainian counter-offensive in the summer of 2023 and regaining most of the lost lands (without Crimea, which fell only in 2024 after negotiations with Admiral Igor Osipov), Russia collapses and many areas declare independence and the rest is ruled by warlords (Siberia, Kuriles, southern Russia eastern parts of European Russia), the Federal government (led by Medvedev, who is still trying to continue Putin's policy) in Moscow and Veliky Novgorod, the national government (a coalition of pro-Western parties, maintained by NATO troops, the areas of Smolensk, Kursk, St. Petersburg, Murmansk, Karelia, Vladivostok) and by communist rebellions (mainly Tatarstan and Siberia). All of Russia is in chaos and looks more like Somalia than a civilized country. The Kuriles were occupied by the 810th Marine Brigade, the 4th Mechanized Regiment and many broken coastal and island defense units.
With the help of the US, Japan decided to take over these islands. Izumo, together with several American destroyers, conducted a raid on the southern Kuril islands - Shikotan and Iturup
Operation "Young Boy". April 1, 2024
450 paratroopers and 750 Japanese marines with the help of 20 NAVY SEALs and 50 Rangers conducted the first raid. Several dozen planes took off from the "Izumo" helicopter and amphibious units from the Kunisaki landing ship.
The paratroopers (who had to use helicopters for logistical and operational reasons) overran the radar and the battery of 120mm guns within a few minutes. The first units landed on the southern and northern coasts. After a short fight for the base No. 453 in the north, the units met in the main arsenal of the coastal battery. Then 12 Russian Su-25 planes arrived. After a short bombardment, 2 of them were shot down and escaped.
After 4 hours the island was cleared and garrison units arrived.
Operation Tsar. April 2, 2024
Phase I
1,200 paratroopers and 2,000 Japanese Marines supported by 350 Marines and 5 Abrams M1A2 tanks were to take over Iturup Island. This island was much more important than Shikotan. The airport, many artillery batteries and most importantly - the General Staff of the Onrona Corps of the Kuril Islands. Thanks to the capture of this base, further operations would be won in advance - the Russians would have no chance in defense without the general command.
Phase II
Twelve Japanese F-4s supported by 24 F-16s bombarded the coastal artillery, allowing the US destroyers to get close enough to conduct detailed and accurate fire on the targets. Under cover of gunfire, 1,200 paratroopers (already using cargo planes) landed in the middle of the island. Colonel Imiro Dakahaki decided to attack the airfield directly, instead of guerrilla combat as recommended.
Phase III
American marines, supported by Japanese, landed near the southern naval base. The bloody fights (as one Abrams tank and 120 soldiers were lost) ended with the success of the Americans (400 Russian prisoners and 1200 wounded, about 230 killed). Only then was the alarm raised across the island.
Phase IV
American units separate from the Japanese and lead the offensive to the north. Many times shot at by single units, they reach their goal without much damage. However, the whole airport is on fire, the planes are destroyed and the Russians are still there. It turned out that the Japanese units had been destroyed in the course of the fighting and most of them were dead or prisoners of war.
Phase V
After making sure, American forces stormed the airport. Tired Russian soldiers surrendered after 40 minutes of fighting. The island fell the next day.
Operation "Prostitute in the Doorway"
More than 340 close support aircraft, 130 fighters, 300 multi-role aircraft and 60 bombers bombed the Kuril Islands as part of this operation. The fleet, on the other hand, began blockading the islands. You must be wondering why? When the public opinion learned about the massacre of Japanese units near the airport, they were against further warfare on such a large scale. By November 2024, most of the islands had fallen and eventually the commander of the defense of the Kuril Islands and the civilian administrator of these areas signed the Peace Treaty between the Kuril Islands Army and the Japan Self-Defense Forces.
Peace Treaty
Eventually, the Japanese agreed to grant autonomy to the islands and release the Russian prisoners with their light weapons. The operations were considered a success and after a UN resolution, these areas were recognized as an "autonomous region of the Empire of Japan".

2023.06.04 22:50 THeWizardOfOde Doorstops and double deckers.

Doorstops and double deckers.
This was my second visit to London (live in US). The first time was right out of college with my best friend in 2011. We watched the Arsenal v Fulham match and in hindsight, were probably watching the beginning of the end of the Arsene Wenger era. Then we basically walked around Westminster for a day taking "proof of life" pictures for our loved ones back home of typical British "things" both contemporary and historic to prove to them that we didn't just drink and party, then the rest of the stay, we drank and partied.
This time, my best friend and I took our families and did not drink and party (the whole time). We also obviously were at the Wolves game, and it truly felt like we were at the end of the beginning of the Arteta era. The atmosphere was absolutely electric. There was a buzz around the ground like I have never seen before (mind you I have only been to 5 games in both Highbury and Emirates). The boys gave us a fond farewell to the season. Xhaka love was felt all through the ground. The starboy signed off in style. And even the new kid got on the score sheet. What more can you ask of. Pics below.
At halftime, in order to fulfil my yearly pledge to be more helpful, I was passing out the free waters they had out for everyone and I spilt 75% of my beer on a 10 year old. His dad was a good sport as everyone around me very quickly ratted me out to him and started pointing and laughing at me. I obviously offered my condolences to the dad for his loss, and RIP to that kid, and my free beer. But worry not, I went to a different kiosk and got another free beer, and a free pint, which I quickly chugged like a college kid about have the spotlight shone on him from a cop car. At that moment I had 2 realizations, one, that I have reached an age where I can no longer do that. And two, that I no longer like the Camden "Hells Lager".
There was a brass and snare quintet that paraded through the area before the match. And as someone who sees a lot of big bands as part of the fan experience in US sports, I have to ask the Europeans in the thread...Is this a new thing brought on by American owners? Or has this always been a thing? I have never associated European sports with "fight songs" and I didn't see this the past 4 times I've been to watch Arsenal. Just curious.
After the game, my friend and I got hammered in and around the bars at Islington and we somehow made it home at 1am. The next day I had promised my son to go to the zoo, and it was the brightest day that I have ever woken up to. The whole experience was a blur or headache and nausea, and in hindsight, I should've just kept drinking. I also realized that day, that I hate the tiny little rubber doorstoppers at every freaking door of our AirBnB apartment. Why not just attach one to the door?? I kept kicking them away under the bed, or a nearby table in order to close the door and then getting yelled at by my wife. Having grown up in India...I understand the need for heavy doors and doorstoppers, but just install them on the bottom of the door you simpletons! This obviously goes out to the person who made that creative decision to not have that, not the general population of the UK, or London, or even that apartment complex.
My son wanted to ride a double decker bus, and I did not. I was avoiding it the whole time as I find them a terror to society and I don't know who would want to sit on something that top heavy, moving at speed. He got his wish when we went to visit Stonehenge. We sat at the top, and every turn I felt like we were going to mass murder an entire crop of pedestrians standing on the curb. My son is 4, so he is pretty much a sociopath who craves the wanton destruction of property.
London has amazing parks. We went to Holland Park, Hyde Park, St. James's Park, and Regents Park. As attractions that are free for the public, I hope you Londoners appreciate what you have. They are brilliant. Well done.
As a history fanatic, the Globe was amazing, so was the Abbey. And the other little pieces of history that are dotted all around the city as we walked around. A lot of people we talked to, other tourists mostly, were complaining about how dirty the city is. Its not that bad. All cities are dirty. Stop being a baby.
Now lets take a moment and talk about Heathrow airport and the workers therein. I don't know if the people who are suppose to pay them don't pay them enough. Or they are just made in a factory somewhere designed to make everyone's life a living hell. It was one of the worst experiences of my life. Everyone was rude, everyone was constantly rushing us, and everyone was sarcastic. Especially this one lady at security who I know hails from the same part of the world that I come from...if you're reading this, I hope a bird poops in your mouth.
In conclusion. Thanks to the Arsenal fans/family for an amazing experience. Thanks to these wonderful players and our brilliant manager for an amazing season and final game. I fell in love with the city all over again, but figure out the fucking doorstoppers. Heathrow can eat my dick.

2023.06.04 22:45 No-Plantain-861 Neighbor asked me too many questions and IDK what to do.

Hi, I (20’s F) live on my own in this little comfy apartment. I live in a small town w no family and close friends nearby (they live in other city or another country, i am latina and grew up in latam). Few months ago a new guy moved into the apartment next to mine. Cool! From the few small interactions i have had w him before I learned he is not from the US either and he seemed pretty nice.
Last time i had a convo w him was on december when he asked for a favor which i was not able to do and asked me if my ring camera works well and i recommended it to him. Few nights ago he knocked on my door and I answered (my mistake) He told me he fixed the lightbulb on the hallway himself (I didnt even know it wasn’t working btw, he did it by his own and didnt call maintenance for that). He then started asking about me and my ethnicity/nationality, after I answered he asked me my age. This was when i felt weirded out and lied about my age. He then was like “cool, also i got a ring camera too as you can see, ok good night!” And he walked into his apartment.
I thought this was extremely weird and my friends agreed too after I sent them the video of my Ring camera recording that convo. Part of me wonders if being this friendly is part of his culture. As I mentioned, he moved freshly from another country to here for work. As someone who has had similar experiences I can understand how something that seemed normal in my country may not be as common in the US, so I wonder if this is the case here too and im just being judgemental.
I told my dad about this and he wants me to do a complaint to the admin in my apartment complex, saying that isnt normal at all. So idk what to think. Prior to this I really havent had weird interactions w this neightbor, we exchange numbers once just in case and we never have really texted. Only time after I spoke w him the first time (which was when he was asking me for a favor and i learned he was going to spend the holidays at his homecountry) he texted “Im at the airport now (I helped him w directions to get there and told him to lmk when gets there and/or if he needs help) thanks again! Will miss listening to your music” and that was the last time other than me sending the link for the Ring camera.
I’m always cautious and protrtive of myself since I really don’t have immadiste family nearby and my best friends also live far. My biggest fear is something happening to me and no one being able to immediately find out something is wrong. I do have friends in the area who would notice eventualy, but it is still hard and something that make me anxious and sad at the same time.
Part of me wants to let this go until something else weird happens. Is he also feeling alone as I do and is this his attempt to make friends? idk if im being naive or trying to be understanding or if i should be cautious about him and talk w admin? I dont want to talk to admin since that might be a reach, but idk. What should I do?

2023.06.04 21:47 Harbinger_51 I started working at a new airport to get away from the mayhem. I just found a new kind.

I don’t know if any of you have noticed, but the last few years have been wild for airline travel. It seems like not even a week can pass before a new viral video is circulating the internet, showcasing some idiot on a plane or airport screaming, shouting, and even starting fights with other passengers and flight staff for no apparent reason.
I’m sure it’s entertaining when you’re sitting at home and come across these videos while casually scrolling through Reddit or Twitter. You might laugh, or shake your head at the stupidity and not give it a second thought. Unfortunately, this isn’t an option when you’re the one on the job.
I can’t even count the number of times I’ve had to call security to deal with a rowdy or straight-up violent customer in the airport over the last couple of years. Most of the time, the things that set people off are surprisingly minor and avoidable issues.
They want to board now but it wasn’t their turn so they start harassing me and my co-workers. Another passenger looked at them funny so they get into a screaming match. A baby is crying so the grown adult starts whining even louder. The person in front of them took the last chocolate donut with sprinkles from the airport bakery so they start throwing punches.
You would not believe the stuff I’ve seen. Needless to say, I got tired of it. Getting up to go to work, wondering what kind of unhinged maniac was going to make a problem for me lost its appeal. So, I started to look for a new job.
A few weeks into the job search, I began to get doubtful that I would find a suitable replacement. Seeing as my only tangible skills and experience were in the airline industry, I didn’t have much more than other airline jobs within realistic reach. Though I didn’t have a problem with relocation, if it meant I was going to end up in another major airport, I had no interest.
During one 3 am job search after my long shift at the airport, running on nothing but the jittery movements from the room-temperature coffee, I found a new job listing. One Pine Airport, a rural airport in the midwest. I sat up and took another sip of coffee. The pictures for the place gave an idea of the size and it looked tiny. Only a couple of runways, a single terminal, and a cute internal design reflective of the forestry that surrounded it. Perfect for me, I thought. I imagined there would not be nearly as many people to deal with.
I scrolled down to the job details and to my relief, it was for the exact same job I had already been doing. The only difference was that it required frequent night shifts. I had done plenty of night shifts before, but doing a few more of them made no difference to me. Surprisingly listed was the pay. I couldn’t believe my eyes. They were offering more starting than I was being paid at the airport I had been at for over three years.
Now wide awake, I eagerly uploaded my resume, filled out all of the application questions, and even spent the next hour crafting an unnecessary cover letter. I headed to bed with the hope that my days at overflowing airports might be over. The next day as I was getting ready for work, I opened my phone to scroll through notifications and check emails.
To my disbelief, I had one from the job I had applied for only hours earlier. The manager at the airport, who had posted the job, requested an interview over Zoom. I quickly replied and we settled on a time during my lunch break that very day.
The first few hours of work breezed by and as I boarded flight after flight of passengers, I couldn’t help but think about the upcoming interview. When it came time, I was nervous as hell but my fears were diffused within the first minute. A bald, well-kept, and well-dressed man joined the meeting room and greeted me with a warm smile. He introduced himself as James.
I couldn’t have asked for a more friendly interviewer. He welcomed me and after some small talk and a few questions about my relevant experience, he gave an overview of the job's details, that being the same job I already had with better pay but more frequent night shifts. No problem with me. After affirming that I knew all the details of the job, James cracked another wide, friendly smile and asked an unexpected question.
“When can you start?”
I spit the out sip of coffee I had just taken back into the cup. I looked back up at James and tried to find the right words but I was unprepared.
“You uh… aren’t gonna give me a call back like later or something? Don’t you have more interviews and… and paperwork waiting to clear and, and…?”
James waved his hand dismissively at his webcam.
“You’re the only applicant we have, and we couldn’t have asked for a better one. As for the paperwork and such, we’ll figure that out when we figure it out. The job is yours, whenever you can start, that is. Preferably soon?”
Though the feelings of shock and confusion remained, they were pushed to the side by my excitement. Throughout the remainder of our conversation, James and I reviewed our schedules and set up a start date before ending the call. I sat back in my break room chair with a sigh of disbelief and a chuckle.
I am well aware that it is standard to give at least a two-week notice to your employer and moving across states for a job is supposed to take quite a bit of planning but I was dying to get out of my current job. Through both eagerness and maybe a little stupidity, we settled on a day only a little over a week away.
At the end of my shift that day, I let my manager know I had to be done in a week. Though she wasn’t happy, she assured me it wouldn’t be a problem.
My final day was nothing short of horrendous. A couple had come up, demanding and screaming that I refund their tickets for no apparent reason. On top of that, they still wanted to fly. After hearing that no, they would not be able to fly for zero cost, the husband, followed by the wife, both started shouting threats. Security was quickly called to the terminal.
As soon as they arrived, I checked my watch to find that my shift was over. I let out a sigh of relief and excitedly walked away. As deprived of sleep as I was, with a long and undoubtedly stressful drive ahead of me, I was still more energetic and in higher spirits than I had been in a long time.
Surprisingly, the drive went off without a hitch. I arrived earlier than expected and checked into the motel room I rented for the week so I had time to get the move figured out. After dumping a few boxes of personal items and a suitcase of clothes into the room, I turned off the lights. I passed out as soon as my head hit the pillow.
I energetically awoke that evening to prepare myself for my first shift. I quickly got dressed and started the drive in hopes of arriving plenty early. Naively, I hadn’t considered how my unfamiliarity with the roads would slow me down, and after a staggering amount of wrong turns, I arrived at the little airport with only minutes to spare.
The airport was even smaller in person than I had imagined it to be from the pictures. I quickly walked through the entrance and was greeted by the small team of security. After notifying them that I was there for work and that James had been waiting for me, they hurried me through without so much as a question. The security, the architecture, the beautiful scenery that surrounded it, nothing about this airport couldn’t have felt more welcoming.
I walked through to find the single terminal inside, devoid of any passengers, with James sitting behind a counter at the end. After a moment he looked up and upon making eye contact with me, his tired face lit up. I was about to apologize for my tardiness but didn’t have the chance as he rushed to show me the employee locker room where he had my new employee uniform and badge waiting inside my very own locker. He told me to get changed and to meet him outside right away.
I did as he asked and within a couple of minutes, I walked out to find him back behind the console at the counter, gathering his belongings. He noticed me approaching and glanced up, thanking me for showing up and starting so soon as he handed me a fresh cup of coffee. He also apologized for not being able to stick around long for my shift but he sounded sure that he wasn’t all that worried.
“I have to be going now, I’ve been on duty for 17 hours. I know you’re plenty familiar with our systems and software, you know what you’re doing.”
He assured me with a pat on the back before walking out from the desk. He turned and added
“It’ll be a quiet night for you anyway. No flights scheduled. Just sit back, relax, and uh... Oh yeah. Most importantly, I nearly forgot”.
He reached into his bag and pulled out a single sheet of laminated paper and held it in front of me.
“Give this a read as soon as you can. Go over it a few times if you need, don’t deviate from it”.
I took it but before I could even get a look, I noticed James begin to walk toward the exit, along with every single one of the security guards and the cashier who had just closed down the only shop in the airport. I then noticed that all of the scanners and metal detectors at the security gate were shut off. I started to panic.
“Hey! James? Where is everyone going?”
I shouted. The first words I had managed to speak to my new boss since arriving. He stopped and turned back again
“Oh yeah. Another thing I ought to have mentioned. Everyone except whoever is working the night shift in, well, your position takes off right around now. Don’t worry, security will be back sometime around 5 am. You’ve got this place to yourself. Grab a magazine from the little store in there if you get bored. Feel free to snag yourself a couple of snacks too”.
He began to walk away again before briefly turning and pointing at me.
“But before you do anything, read that list. You’ll need it”.
I stood, dumbfounded as I watched my new boss along with all of the other airport staff leave. I started to wrap my head around the fact that I had an empty airport to myself for 10 hours, with nothing to do and no one to deal with, all while I was getting paid the highest wage I had ever earned.
As much as thinking about it delighted me, I turned my attention turned toward the sheet of paper I almost forgot I was holding on to. James said to follow whatever list was on it, so I figured I ought to take a look. I walked behind the airport counter and sank into one of the seats behind it. I took a sip of coffee and finally took a serious look.
A total of 6 rules were neatly spaced on the sheet.
Rule 1: All lights in the airport are to stay on at all times. If one is off, or if you are to accidentally turn one off, turn it back on as soon as possible. If a light seems to be broken or is out and unable to turn back on, calmly exit the area. Report the outage to James or maintenance when possible. Do not listen to the sounds. Do not listen to the voices.
Rule 2: Rule 2 pertains to rainy or stormy weather. If it is raining or storming outside, disregard rules 3, 4, and 5. They will not be a concern during these types of weather conditions. Stay inside at all times. Do not use the men’s restroom and avoid going near it entirely if possible.
Rule 3: Sometime between 11 pm and 1 am, a young woman will walk out of the women’s restroom. She will enter the terminal and sit, occasionally getting up to walk around or change seats. Her name is Elizabeth. She will attempt to make conversation but you must not reciprocate. You may look at her, you may give nonverbal communication such as a head nod, you may write as a means of communication, or you may shake her hand but do not speak to her. If you refuse to speak to her, Elizabeth should be gone within a few hours. If you happen to make such a mistake, go to the men’s restroom and wait for her to leave.
Rule 4: At around one or two in the morning, a janitor in blue coveralls will arrive at the front entrance. Crack open the door and ask for his name. If he says his name is Simon, let him in. If he gives you any name other than Simon, shut the door and lock it without another word and walk away. If the janitor is Simon, he will attend to the janitorial needs of the airport. If he asks to clean where you are standing, oblige him. Simon will not interfere with your duties otherwise. He is not hostile or dangerous. You may engage in conversation with Simon. He will leave the same way he came when he feels it is necessary.
Rule 5: At around 3 am, you may notice that a black and red Cessna Skyhawk has landed on one of the airstrips. You will never see it land, and you will never see it take off. It will just appear when you’re not looking. After spotting the plane for the first time, do not look at it again. Avoid looking in its general direction if at all possible. There is a picture of the exact plane displayed inside the terminal, behind the counter.
Rule 6: Later in the night but sometime before dawn, a group of men claiming to be from TSA may arrive at the airport. They will have their own key and let themselves in. Some could be armed. Often, they exhibit panicked behavior. They may search through the airport, sweep room to room, and ask questions. They are permitted to search anywhere in the main airport building that they please, and you may oblige to any questioning but under no circumstances are they permitted to enter the sky bridge. They will not enter without verbal approval and they cannot harm you.
After reading over it a few times, I set the laminated sheet down and leaned back further into my seat before taking a long sip of coffee, wondering what on earth I had just read. I hadn’t taken James to be the imaginative type. Most of all, I hadn’t taken him to be anywhere near the unprofessional type. Though as I thought about it, it was unusual how rushed this all was and how he left in such a hurry, leaving so few details.
I began to wonder if I was being pranked, I considered that maybe this was all some sort of messed up joke or setup. I ruled that out pretty quickly. This was, in fact, a real airport. I had done plenty of research by the time I got here. At least a few real flights were coming in or going out each day. James has been working here for years and I couldn’t think of a reason why he would jeopardize his job or reputation just to get a scare out of me.
After chuckling to myself at the absurdity of my situation, I decided to indulge and see what would happen. Maybe it was a “test” for me as a new employee. Maybe James wanted to see if I could follow orders.
After glancing at the list once more and realizing the impact rule 2 had on the number of things I would have to keep track of, I brought up my phone to check the forecast. Clear skies, not a chance for rain or storms all night. Great, I thought to myself. I had to watch out for these Elizabeth and Simon characters to show up and I suppose “not” be on the lookout for a random plane to appear on the runway.
I stood up and grabbed my coffee, walking to the glass panes. I took another sip from my cup while admiring the lit runways along the airfield. It sure was a pretty nice sight. As I was raising my cup to finish what was left, I began to hear the click of shoes on the floor somewhere behind me.
Startled, I spun around abruptly, dropping my cup and spilling the remainder of the coffee in the process. At the other end of the terminal seating stood a young woman, around her mid-twenties in my estimation. She was holding two large leather suitcases in each hand and had an old-fashioned sense of style with a skirt and heels. Most surprising was her stunning beauty and welcoming smile.
“Oh I’m sorry dear, didn’t mean to scare you”
She expressed with a sincere tone. I opened my mouth, ready to assure her that everything was fine but I stopped myself. I recalled the list. At this point, I was certain that she was here at James’s request, a paid actor determined to make me break the rules. I was more determined not to. Instead, I simply fixed my posture, straightened my uniform, and looked back with a smile.
She walked to the counter where she placed her leather suitcases on the ground before closing the distance between us.
“Looks like we’ve got this fabulous airport all to ourselves. I am Elizabeth”
She said, reaching out her hand. I shook it, but she didn’t seem quite satisfied.
“And your name?”
I continued to smile and lock eye contact. Her grin grew for a moment before she remarked
“You don’t seem to be much of a talkative one”
And with that, she turned and started to walk away. I returned to my seat behind the counter, watching her closely as I did. Elizabeth proceeded to the unattended airport shop and after a couple of minutes of looking over magazine covers and occasionally taking a peek inside, she returned carrying a small stack of reading material. She approached my counter before placing a National Geographic magazine in front of me.
“I figured you might like this one. Enjoy”
She said, winking before settling on a seat in the first row of the terminal, straight across from where I had been sitting.
Remarkably, her intuition was spot on. I may have lived in cities all of my life but I loved nature, despite how little of it I had gotten to see. National Geographic was a favorite of mine, one I had been familiar with and enjoyed on work breaks from time to time. Rarely was I given this long to be able to read. I was almost tempted to break the rule and thank her for her rather thoughtful act, though I didn’t. I stuck to the rule.
The next couple of hours were uneventful. Elizabeth and I read through our magazines, occasionally looking up at each other to exchange glances and smiles. Within that time, she had attempted to get me to talk at least half a dozen more times. I almost gave in when she asked me if I wanted another magazine.
At a little past 1:30, I could hear a knock at the front entrance. Elizabeth and I both looked before she remarked
“Oh, that must be the nice cleaner man”
With a giggle before returning to her magazine. I walked over to the front doors and sure enough, there stood a man around his mid-thirties, sporting a blue janitor suit waiting patiently at the door. I unlocked the door and opened it. As he took a stride to enter, I remembered the most important detail from rule 4. I closed the door halfway and sternly commanded
“Wait”
The man looked up at me with a surprised look. I asked him the question.
“What is your name?”
The man stared back at me as an innocent smile formed on his face.
“I’m Simon!”
He announced excitedly.
“The Janitor here. Did James let you know I was coming tonight?”
I stood there for a moment, thinking over the rule, before nodding my head and opening the door once again to let him in.
Once inside, Simon walked with purpose to the janitor's closet which was positioned near the men’s restroom. I followed him somewhat suspiciously for the next few minutes as he began to clean but I eased up once I got the feeling that he was just the janitor around here and that James made up the whole “ask for his name thing” to make into one of his rules.
I returned to my counter in the terminal and continued to read. Occasionally, Simon would pass by, off to do his duties in some part of the airport or Elizabeth would stand up to look at the various pictures and paintings on display in the terminal. A good half an hour of this would go on before Simon approached the terminal counter with his mop in hand. He seemed to be eyeing up the two leather suitcases Elizabeth had set there.
Assuming he wanted to clean where they were, I got up to move them. I grabbed each one by the handle but failed to lift them off of the ground. Confused, I stepped back to see if they were stuck on something. They were not. Just two suitcases, left right where Elizabeth had set them.
I tried to lift just one. Again, I failed. I tried both hands, putting my back and legs into it with all that I had. It wouldn’t budge.
I looked back up at Simon who nodded his head in Elizabeth’s direction. I turned to look at Elizabeth, who after noticing my stare, and my apparent inability to move her luggage, smiled and stood up.
“Let me get that for you”
She insisted. With ease, she lifted both leather suitcases and moved them closer to her seat before lowering them, this time letting them drop a few inches. When they hit the ground, a boom echoed through the airport and I flinched in surprise. I looked back at Simon, who hadn’t seemed shocked at all. He just continued to mop.
I slowly made my way back to my seat, not taking an eye off Elizabeth for one second as I did. After a few minutes, she looked back up from her magazine, noticed my stare, and returned to her reading with a grin. She seemed to find my shock amusing. Eventually, Simon noticed my surprise as well. He paused his mopping and approached me before raising his head.
“I know, I know. Stick to the rules and everything will be just fine, trust me”
He stated quietly. I nodded my head in response.
Simon went back to his cleaning. A few minutes passed before Elizabeth had something new to say.
“What a remarkable aircraft!”
She exclaimed, looking out the glass panes facing the runways. I followed her gaze to the lone, black, and red airplane positioned on the runway. I turned around, looking at the picture displayed behind me. It certainly looked like a match. I turned back to the window and felt my heart sink. A silhouette of a person now stood next to the plane, facing the airport and the windows of the terminal.
“Stop looking at it”
Simon sternly muttered from behind me. I looked back at Simon who quickly cowered, seemingly ashamed to have raised his voice at me but I was grateful he had. I read over rule 5 again, specifically where it stated to not look at the plane twice. I murmured insults at myself under my breath but they didn’t have much room between my now heavy, frantic breathing. My eyes darted through the other rules. I chose to focus on that sheet of paper. At least it was something other to look at than the plane outside.
This went on for a good ten minutes or so and my breathing started to calm down. I had begun to pray in my head that whoever and whatever that was would go away when Elizabeth suddenly approached my counter. I snapped my head up in a jittery movement to make eye contact with her.
“I’m going to get some more reading material. Want another one of those?”
She asked, reaching a hand out to my National Geographic magazine. I looked up and nodded, forcing a smile. As She moved away, my gaze didn’t, and once again I found myself looking at the plane on the runway, the silhouette now standing hundreds of feet away from the plane, even closer to the building, and still staring in my direction.
Chills ran up my spine as I snapped my gaze back to my desk. I began to shake with fear and the manic breathing returned. Moments later, Elizabeth returned and placed a new magazine on the counter before running a hand over my shoulder, seemingly to comfort me. Simon then put his hand on my back.
“He’ll be gone soon and so will the plane. Just don’t look at it again”
He assured me.
“Mind if I clean here?”
He then asked.
I got up and walked to the end of the counter, watching Simon thoroughly clean the floor before I looked up and let out a soft
“Thank you”
He nodded and smiled back.
“What was that?”
Elizabeth asked. I turned towards her.
“Oh, I was just thanking Simon for-”
My error occurred to me before I could finish speaking. My eyes locked on Elizabeth as she stood up from her seat and her smile faded. Her eyes and nose began to bleed profusely as she started to sob, lightly at first, then hysterically. She let out a bellowing screech, a mix of pain and anger. She picked up one of her suitcases and hurled it at me, I barely dodged the ridiculously heavy object before it crashed into the wall behind me.
Luckily I was quick thinking this time and made a run for the men’s restroom recalling rule 3. She chased after me but I slammed the door shut in her face and locked it. Elizabeth pounded on the door with furious anger a few times but gave up quickly.
“So that’s how you dance, is it love? I can play that game”
She snickered before flipping a light switch outside of the bathroom. The clicking of her shoes faded away. A few minutes of silence passed before laughter started to become audible from the other side of the door.
One voice grew to two, two voices grew to three, three grew to ten. While others continued their now hysterical laughing, some began to scream. I crumbled to the floor, covering my ears as the voices went on, only stopped by another flip of the switch. Light beamed through the bottom of the door.
“It’s over now. She’s gone, and so is the plane. I’ve gotta be getting out of here soon”
Simon’s calm and friendly voice called out. I reluctantly exited the bathroom and followed him back to the counter, where he had prepared another coffee for me.
“Wish I could have done more there but you’ll come to find out that when Elizabeth gets angry, you just gotta let her do her thing”.
I looked up at him, still with my distraught face, at a loss for words. Over the next few minutes, Simon finished cleaning Elizabeth’s blood from the floor before putting everything back into the janitor's closet. He looked down at his watch.
“I better get out of here. Good luck with the rest of your night. I hope I’ll be seeing you soon”.
He said, letting out a sigh as he again looked at me in pity. I think he knew how shaken up I was. It was like he had seen people in my position before. Something told me he doesn’t have a choice on when he leaves. After I watched him exit the door, I returned to my seat behind the counter. I began to feel alone and afraid, but the loneliness wouldn’t last at least.
Only minutes after Simon left, the doors swung open and men in tactical gear, most of which had their faces covered in masks and goggles, rushed through the door. I sprung back up from my seat and watched as they did, with not much else I could do. They swept room to room, checking every nook and cranny at gunpoint, ignoring my existence at first.
As they cleared the entire building, the twenty or so armed men made their way to the terminal seating area. A lone man in a suit, whom I had not noticed enter, made his way to the front of the group.
“I’m with TSA, I’m going to need you to answer some questions for me”
He demanded. I nodded in affirmation.
“How many individuals have you seen in this airport since the security team left the building?”
“Besides myself, 2 Inside, one outside”
I answered confidently.
“Was the individual outside next to a black and red Cessna Skyhawk?”
“Yes”
I again responded confidently. The man in the suit nodded and paused for a moment before making another demand.
“We’re going to need to search the air bridge”.
I glanced back at the sheet of rules on the counter. Making sure I had read it right before. I took a step forward and straightened my uniform.
“No”
I replied. The man in the suit looked irritated.
“If you do not step aside and give us permission to search, I’m afraid I’ll have to detain you”.
Already tired and worn out, I wasn’t going to break the last rule. I decided to give a not-so-smart remark to the man in the suit
“Looking a little well-armed for TSA, wouldn’t you agree?”
He ignored my comment.
“Last chance, step aside”
“No”
Again, irritated by my response, the man in the suit turned to his right and raised his chin to give a signal. Gunshots rang out and I collapsed to the floor. I felt as though my life left my body before it all faded to black.
The next thing I remembered was the feeling of my hand gripping a water bottle. Then came James’s voice.
“I see you made it through the first night intact. Looks like you got to meet Simon. He’s a nice guy, you’ll get to like him. And Elizabeth, she’s…well, she’s something else, isn’t she?”
I opened my eyes and looked up at James.
“Am I dead?”
I asked in a raspy voice. James chuckled in return.
“No! No, you did great. You’re fine. It does, however, look like you might have been a little assertive to our undead TSA special forces wannabes. I would recommend sticking with the less aggressive tone and word choices, maybe I ought to edit that into the rules sheet… In any case, they can’t hurt you but they can still get a jump out of you, as you saw”.
Once again, I was at a loss for words. I slowly made my way back to my feet from the ground and looked at the sunrise over the airfield. James held out an envelope for me. I opened it, revealing a stack of crisp $100 bills.
“A little bonus for your first night. It sure is a lot to go through for the first time but I promise, you get used to it all”.
I turned to James with an angry look and finally spoke up.
“What the hell is wrong with you? What makes you think it’s okay to put someone through this without any warning? I'm done, keep your damn money. I’m gonna go call the cops”.
I started to walk towards the exit when James stepped in front of me.
“Look, I know it isn’t fair for you but it wasn’t fair for me either. It wasn’t fair for any of us. It’s not okay, I know. But what do you expect me to do? Someone needs to be here for the night shift. You wouldn’t believe any of this if I told you ahead of time. You would have thought I was some sort of nutjob and the police will think of you the same if you tell them. I needed you to see it for yourself”
James was starting to get worked up and stoppeto breatheth before continuing.
“This money is yours, no strings attached. You’re free to leave now and never come back, there will be no shame in it”
I also started to calm down but I couldn’t bring myself to look James in the eye yet.
“If you choose to stay, I’ll see you in my office to finish up your paperwork”.
And with that, James walked away. Facing the front of the airport, I watched the first passengers of the day come through the entrance. I just stood there for a few minutes. Whether I was ready for this job or not, I knew right then I sure as hell wasn’t going back to another overcrowded city airport.
I turned and headed for James’s office.

2023.06.04 21:45 Beautiful_Resolve640 San Francisco Solo Trip

I’m heading to San Francisco at the end of June for a solo female trip. I’m looking for recommendations for places to eat, things to do, airport shuttles/ best way of transportation? I’m not interested in bars/partying.
I will not have a car so i’m hoping to Taxi/Uber or electric bike places/walk.
My hotel is on Market Street (1420). Any suggestions? I’m planning on Alcatraz, Aquarium so far. Some ideas I had were Chinatown/Japan Town, Golden Gate Park, Coit Tower and some hiking trails.
oh also any recommendations for transportation when i do need it? ( Taxi, Uber, Bike?) or airport shuttles? I’m not a big city girl so that’s also new to me
EDIT: I’m thinking of staying at Comfort Inn by the Bay, closer area and seems higher quality. How do we feel about this?
I’ve changed my stay to Comfort Inn!

2023.06.04 20:56 alto_cumulus Tips for long distance air travel with kids!

Now that I’ve done two vacations over a 12h flight away with a baby and a toddler, I feel totally qualified to write a guide on the subject. So without further ado, here’s my tips.
In my experience, I’ve been able to check car seats and strollers for free. In my last trip with two kids, I brought two car seats and two strollers. I checked 3 items for free and brought one on the plane. The gate agent was kind enough to seat us with an extra seat so we could have a space for the lap infant’s car seat as well. It doesn’t hurt to ask if they can seat you with extra space.
Did you know they sell car seat bags with wheels for the airport? I saw another family with them, and I was super jealous and ordered one immediately. It sure beats lugging the car seat by hand.
Bring the stroller as far into the gate as you can. You can gate check a stroller, but you shouldn’t collapse it until you’re as far down the ramp as they let you go with it.
I have seen inflatable cubes that you can shove in the foot area for kids to stretch out and sleep on. So it basically extends their seat where the feet would be. Probably not useful for an infant, but definitely worth having the option to use it for a toddler. When my kid fell asleep on my lap, I was stuck there for hours.
If your stroller bag isn’t durable, it’s gonna get wrecked.
Bring enough snacks and entertainment on the flight for your toddler, and don’t count on the airplane meals being satisfying. Bringing a shiny new toy is optimal. It might buy you hours of time.
Assume your kids are going to get sick at the worst times. Like, walking from the gate to the airplane. Probably because they’re kids and licked the floor of the airport and caught something exotic. Yes, this happened to us. (Un)Fortunately, it happened to me TWICE IN A ROW so I had the diaper bag stocked with everything possible this time around. Electrolyte powder, Motrin, Tylenol, mylicon, Benadryl. Pro tip: airports let you take children’s medicine above the fluid allowance, but a lot of things like Motrin and Tylenol also come in tablet form for kids, which are lighter and more compact.
Additionally, make sure you have health coverage for wherever you’re going. When my kid ended up in the hospital after catching an exotic stomach bug (the first of two illnesses on the trip, he was fine thankfully), we were grateful that the ER bill was covered. Our credit card covers travel health insurance, so it might be worth getting a travel card if you don’t have other insurance options. Travel cards rock in general, too.
Assume you’re also going to get whatever your kids catch, and make sure you have all possible medicines for yourself too. I was an idiot and only brought pedialyte for my kids. The country I was in apparently doesn’t have Gatorade, so I was SOL for myself (and allergic to the flavors of the electrolyte powders I could find in stores.)
Wet bags. For those who don’t know, they are fabric, waterproof bags that zip shut. You can put blow out clothes, barf clothes, and swimsuits in them. They’re incredibly useful for when your child starts puking in the middle of a 3h drive.
Mentally prepare kids for what’s about to happen. We read my toddler the Byron Barton books on planes and airports, so he knew what to expect. For daily trips, we’d tell him what city we were going to and what we were going to do there. It also helped him talk about it afterwards “We’re going in car and see fishies, mama!”
Bring furniture repair touch up stuff (like stain pens or colored wax crayons to fix scratches) and superglue. Just in case your hotel is decorated with things that aren’t toddler-proof.
Pack some basic meals. We brought pasta boxes and all of the kids’ favorite snacks on the plane, so we didn’t have to rush to a grocery store upon landing.
Vacation destinations with lots of things to see are probably better than more adult relaxation destinations. I love me some Iceland trips, but the only thing to do there is see beautiful nature and relax, which my toddler and baby won’t appreciate. A trip to somewhere like Florence, where you can go out and walk through streets and check out different museums and cafes is probably much more fun for toddlers.
Whatever toys you bring should be easily replaceable if you’re unfortunate enough to lose them. Source: left kiddo’s favorite stuffed animal across the world. Fortunately, it’s of a character that has a “baby” series and an “adult” series, so we were able to replace it with the grown up version of the character and tell kiddo that his toy grew up. Phew.
What are your guys’ travel tips?

2023.06.04 20:43 Lycid Trip report: Spain honeymoon for 2 weeks in May 2023 (first time flying J)

This was my first "big boy" award redemption I've done and it couldn't have gone better. Before, I've booked Hyatt rooms overseas and gotten the companion pass so been doing award travel for a while, but this was the first time we flew in J and first time being able to realize a "bucket list" trip thanks to award travel.
Here was our itinerary (started in SFO):
Barcelona -> Granada -> Cordoba -> Seville -> Ronda -> Setenil de las Bodegas -> Malaga (only to fly out of).
Planning began last summer, and the flights were booked then. Since this was the first time we've ever flown in J and it was the honeymoon, I wanted to make sure we spent a little extra for a nicer European carrier, and I wanted to try two of them. So on our flight there we flew KLM into Barcelona via Schiphol, and for the flight out we flew Air France from Malaga via CDG. We opted against doing TAP or Ibera for two reasons despite them being more direct: the product/service is apparently not as nice, and for Iberia it would have required a positioning flight into LAX. Next time we do Spain though, I definitely would give them a shot.
Points and cost break down
We did a LOT of research on the best programs and flights to do this trip and ultimately landed on Flying Blue. For one, while they do have fees, they were not exorbitant. For two, their products were very well reviewed. I'll get more into our actual experience in the review section below. But also crucially, there just happened to be a point transfer bonus going on at the same time from Chase that boosted our points by 25%.
Airfare:
Other travel costs, all booked in advance about 1-2 months out:
Hotels:
We only booked one hotel on points and it was in Barcelona. Overall, we found mom & pop run B&B's and AirBNB's to be a far better value than traditional hotels in most of Spain. But, Barcelona had some good options for some redemptions. Ultimately we decided on:

2023.06.04 19:28 Icy_Appointment8852 [Election] The Tibi Affair; The Collapse of the 37th Israeli Government, and 2024 Knesset Elections.

02:00 Harimon Street, Hehmed, Suburb of Tel Aviv.
5.6 Kilometers away from Ben Gurion International Airport.
Mansour Tibi was hurriedly packing as much of his life as he possibly could into his car. Two suitcases. That was all he was intending on taking with him. Having already made arrangements to have his neighbours take care of what remained, he was sure that nothing could go wrong.
As he stuffed the oversized suitcases into the back of his car, a nondescript white van screeched into view and pulled up aside him. Soon, the suitcases remained in his car, while the van pulled away at speed, and Mansour was nowhere to be found.
Segen (Lieutenant) Mansour Tibi was an Arab Israeli officer within the Air Intelligence Group (Lahak Modi'in) within Israeli Military Intelligence (Agaf HaModi'in). He was primarily charged with intelligence operations focused on analyzing maintenance-supportive operations. On his possession at the time of capture by Shin Bet agents, Segen Tibi possessed documents pertaining to military intelligence operations abroad, with a focus on the IDF's assessment of adversary capabilities. His purchase of tickets to Mexico was flagged by Shin Bet, and an investigation was launched leading to his capture.
Segen Tibi has been charged with treason and espionage and a wide variety of other offences, and is due to be tried by the military tribunal in the Central and Air Force District in accordance with Israeli law.

Times of Israel, 5th of November 2024

Yesh Atid calls on Minister of Intelligence to resign; Netanyahu to call elections.

Yair Lapid of Yesh Atid expressed outrage at the failure of the Government to preempt the potential defection of Segen Tibi with a large quantity of classified military intelligence documents. Lapid, who has served as the Leader of the Opposition since 2022, called it "yet another Netanyahu shambles" and has called for elections to let the Israeli people decide whether they approve of the actions of the Hardline Coalition's actions over the course of the Tibi Affair.
The primary accusation levelled at the Coalition over the Tibi Affair appears to be at the Minister of Intelligence's failure to spot Tibi's potential defection earlier. Yet Government MKs have expressed bewilderment at the Opposition's accusations, as Tibi was apprehended before any sensitive information had left Israel.
Polling has shown that the so-called "Tibi Affair" has not significantly damaged the perception of the Coalition as it stands especially as after the past few years, the Coalition's diplomatic successes in establishing relations with Arab nations, and on other fronts have been wildly praised. Besides the Exemption Scandal in 2023, the Coalition's work has surprised most analysts as the political situation in Israel has been broadly stabilised compared to the 2018-2022 Crisis.
Having considered the political situation, and his ability to nip scandals in the bud before they get any worse, Netanyahu has put forward a bill to dissolve the Knesset and call for elections, which has received assent.
State of the Parties

Likud

Netanyahu has served as Prime Minister for five terms so far, having enjoyed over 17 years in office on a non-continuous basis. If elected to yet another term, BB as he is known, will be 80 years old at the end of that term. Yet age does not appear to be a concern for Likud party members, and appear to back their man all the way back to the Prime Minister's office.
Netanyahu has been praised by Israelis on the right for his handling of the Territories, further expanding settler rights and infrastructure in the area. With economic growth strong, and further supported by increased capital spending, Likud appears to be in a very strong position going into the elections.

Yesh Atid

Yesh Atid has been weakened as a result of what voters have viewed as "ineffective opposition" to the present Coalition Government. While Yesh Atid have tried to opposite many of the Coalition's proposals, infighting due to the Territory question has caused significant problems with the party's ability to present a unified front. Viewed by voters as a less effective Likud, Yesh Atid has suffered significantly as a result of BB's success.

Shas

Shas, as the party for the Sephardi, Mizrahi, and Haredim Jews has had a broadly mixed record in Government with Netanyahu. While they have enjoyed voters closely associating them with BB, and the recent success of the Hardline politics demonstrated by the Coalition, Shas particularly has suffered slightly as a result of them holding the Government hostage over ending exceptions for Haredi Jews within the military draft system.

Israel Resilience Party

The IRP has demonstrated good judgement by refusing to attack the Government over the Tibi Affair, rather focusing on the deteriorating relations within the Territories and the need for equalizing the economic successes within Israel more broadly.

Others

Broadly speaking, Government partners have benefited from economic and diplomatic successes. Although the Israeli Labour Party has enjoyed an uptick in support especially as the gap between the richest Israelis and the working classes has grown bigger under the Hardline Coalition's economic program.
Party Ideology Number of Knesset Seats Won Increase/Decrease on 2022
Likud "National Zionist liberalism" 35 +3
Yesh Atid Zionist Liberalism 13 -4
Shas Religious conservatism 11 +2
Israeli Resilience Party Social liberalism 10 +2
Yamina National conservatism 8 +1
Israeli Labour Party Social democracy 9 +2
United Torah Judaism Religious conservatism 9 +2
Yisrael Beiteinu Nationalist Secularism 5 -2
Religious Zionist Party Religious Zionism 7 +2
Otzma Yehudit Kahanism 1 +/- 0
New Hope National liberalism 1 -5
Meretz Social democracy 7 +1
Ra'am Islamism 5 +1

Times of Israel 15th of December, 2024

Post Election Coalition talks lead to a return of Netanyahu

Following a brief negotiation period, the incumbent Coalition which has worked so surprisingly well over the past number of years, have agreed to extend the Coalition for another term, along with the inclusion of Yamina.
The only thing stopping BB now is the inevitable march of time that comes for us all.

2023.06.04 18:45 fitznerd What to charge as flat rate?

Hi guys, I no longer nanny but I keep in good contact with the previous families I nanny with. One of them wants me to come with them on their annual vacation. They want to know what I would charge as a flat rate. They cover flight and food and it sounds like it’ll be a very relaxed job. Mainly just waking G4 up in the morning and getting her ready for the day by 11am. Then potentially watching her for a few date nights. They welcomed me to come along the holiday activities they’re doing but also acknowledged that I would want to venture out on my own. No additional responsibilities such as food prep or cleaning as they will do all of that. The vacation would be a total of 12 days.
A few extra things I feel I should add, I live in a completely different state now. Which would either require me to drive 5 hours to board the plane with them or make arrangements to get to the airport where I’m at. When I worked for them I was making 22hr in a MCOL area. They gave me bonuses throughout the year and even given me money long after I wasn’t their nanny.
Doing this vacation has no affect on my income as I’m an independent artist and create my own schedule. If anything regardless of what I charge I’d be making more money in the end. I do believe I’ll have a lot of independent time on this trip as I have done other activities with this family and they have always been good about taking over for their child versus leaving it all on me. Overall this is a family I enjoy being around. Since I’ve moved I’ve come up and seen them a few times on my visit and consider them pretty good friends.

14 Biggest Travel Mistakes Tourists Make
https://preview.redd.it/0un0aumwu04b1.jpg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=672812dd2c3adbdaf73057e32e656b8c42f6e6ea
14 Biggest Travel Mistakes To NOT Make
When travelling, it’s not unusual to find yourself making a careless mistake now and then. You are after all, exploring an environment that you are unfamiliar with. Whether you are a seasoned traveler or this is your first big trip, you will probably benefit from the following list. With just a little bit of planning, you can cut down your chances of making mistakes and have the best vacation possible.
Number 1 - Booking Without Comparing Rates If you’re one of those people who just books on impulse, basically just the first good deal you see, you are likely paying more than you could be. There are so many different travel sites on the internet, and by spending just a little bit of time researching and comparing, you will quickly learn just how much prices can vary - and you’ll be able to find the best deals - which are probably better than that first one you saw. To keep it simple, compare at least 3 sites like Travelocity, Expedia or Priceline.
Number 2 - Booking Your Trip Way Too Early So you and your friends decided to finally take that trip to Paris next summer. But wait! Don’t rush to book your trip just yet. Of course you want to make it real by booking everything right away but this can be a mistake and you could end up paying more. It’s best if you book your flight 3-4 months before you plan to travel. That’s around the time when airlines begin to increase and lower their rates based on demand. When it comes to cruises and tours, this is where you will want to wait until last minute - that is if you want to pay less. Since boats and tours have to fill up their spaces, they offer amazing last-minute deals, because it’s still better for them to make less profit than no profit at all on those empty seats.
Number 3 - Not Reading Reviews Yes, I know that these days most people do read reviews online, but you would be surprised to learn that there are still many who don’t - they just head over to the closest travel agency and book everything there, based on the advice of a travel agent. Don’t make this mistake - do your own research! Read reviews online. See what former guests have to say; check out photos of the rooms. Because by not doing this, you could find yourself arriving at a place that is far from what was promised - and you probably don’t want to stay in a bad neighborhood or sleep in a bed with bedbugs, right? You don’t have to stay at the best hotel in town, but where you stay is kind of important, and at least checking it out online can save you one big headache.
Number 4 - Traveling In Peak Season By definition, this is the period of highest demand, and it varies by destination. Travelling during the peak season means larger crowds just about anywhere you go. And even worse, you will be paying about double what it would cost you in the low season. Unless you enjoy crowded beaches and waiting in huge lineups to see attractions, you may want to consider travelling during the low season, or even better, the shoulder season - directly before or after high season, when the weather is still good, but there are much fewer people. It will not only be cheaper, but you will also have a more enjoyable time.
Number 5 - Thinking The Only Thing You Need Is A Valid Passport There are many locations you can travel to with a simple passport, but then there are those where you will need a Visa - places like China, Nigeria, or Russia to name a few. Of course this depends not only on the destination, but also where you are travelling from. While you can get a Visa in many countries upon arrival, there are often documents you need to fill out before you arrive - and without these, you can’t get a Visa. Then, another important thing to note is that many countries require a passport that will remain valid for at least six months after your departure date from the country. Make sure you don’t let this one slide. Check to see if you need a Visa or a new passport well in advance.
Number 6 - Skipping Travel Insurance This is one of those things that many people tend to overlook - because well, most of the time you won’t make use of it. But, you really never know when you may need it. It could be a small slip and you break your arm or some other unforeseen circumstance. Travel insurance will have your back and protect you while abroad. It usually doesn’t cost much and it will protect you should there be any medical or non-medical emergencies. Not having insurance could end up costing you thousands, so don’t skimp on this. Seriously!
Number 7 - Forgetting To Contact Your Bank Before The Trip It only takes a few minutes but could save you from being stuck in a foreign land without access to money. Some banks will completely block your account if an overseas charge is made. It is flagged as suspicious. And of course this is usually a good thing, but not when it is you trying to access your funds, thousands of miles away from home. When you call your bank to let them know that you will be travelling, you should also ask about their foreign transaction fees to avoid any bad surprises.
Number 8 - Not Having Copies Of Your Documents You don’t think it will happen to you - losing your wallet, fanny pack or whatever you carry. And getting robbed? Nah, that won’t happen to you, right? Well, the thing is that either of these can (and do) happen to people all the time. No matter how careful you think you are, you should carry copies of your important documents. These include copies of your ID, passport, travel insurance, and credit cards. Of course you’ll want to pack them separate from the originals.
Number 9 - Failing To Find Out Roaming Charges These charges can rack up very quickly, unbeknownst to you. You arrive at your destination and you excitedly call your friend or spouse to let them know you arrived - and before you know it, you’ve been on the phone for half an hour. That single call could cost you a hundred dollars or more. By simply finding out what’s covered by your phone plan, you can avoid any additional charges. If you find out that you aren’t covered, then it’s best if you switch your phone settings to airplane mode before you board the plane. This way, you can still use a Wi-Fi connection wherever available without accidentally using your data. Now, if you do think that you will need to use data on your trip, consider purchasing an international plan - or you can even buy a SIM card once you arrive.
Number 10 - Exchanging Currency At The Airport Sure it’s fast and easy to exchange currency at the airport. However, it’s also worth noting that you will get the worst possible conversion rate for your money. Now, it’s ok to exchange a few dollars to use for a taxi if you must, but the best thing to do is to actually take care of this before you leave. You can check rates of various banks in your area to find the best, and then head over to get the currency you need.
Number 11 - Eating Near Major Tourist Attractions On your trip, you are more than likely planning to visit at least a few of those amazing spots you’ve been hearing about and dreaming about seeing in real life. But any food place, be it a restaurant or food stand, is going to cost double the price (and sometimes more) near any major attraction. And since these places know that people aren’t coming back, they usually don’t worry too much about the quality or consistency of the food they serve. Besides, most visitors just arrived and don’t know much about the local foods so it doesn’t matter anyway. They’re just excited to be there and see the attractions. To most, it’s far more amazing to eat a ‘sub-par’ burger in front of a famous landmark than eating a delicious one at their favorite burger joint back home. Try eating in a ‘non-touristy’ area where the food will actually be amazing. It has to be, otherwise nobody would go back. Yes, you will have to walk a few blocks, but the food will be much tastier and cost a lot less. You can also ask locals about good places to eat. By the way, the same is true when it comes to shopping for just about anything near a major attraction. Stores will always have higher prices. Don’t be lazy. Take the effort and stroll off the beaten path. You’ll surely find the same T-shirt for a third of the price.
Number 12 - Not Packing A Travel Adapter There are 15 types of electrical outlet plugs used around the world, and if your choice of destination uses outlets different than the ones your country does, you won’t be able to plug in anything in without an adapter. You can use USB ports for many things, but we all know how slow those charges can be. In some cases you may not be able to charge at all depending on the power needs of the device. Amazon offers decent universal travel adapters for around 15 to 20 dollars.
Number 13 - Not Taking A Power Bank With You Most places you go will have somewhere to charge your devices - except when your battery is at 10 percent…. that’s when you won’t find anywhere to plug in and charge! You probably already know how that goes… But imagine you are hiking in the wilderness somewhere and you get lost - and then realize that your phone is almost completely drained. It sounds like a horror movie, but it can happen. You can easily avoid a scenario like this by taking a power bank (A.K.A. battery charger) with you. It won’t take up much space in your backpack and can come in very handy.
Number 14 - Planning Too Much For A Single Trip Assuming you aren’t just heading to a resort with a bunch of friends for a week of intoxication and partying, you will likely plan a lot and will want to see and do as much as possible on your trip. This sounds great, but if you plan too many things and fill up each day from morning to night, you could end up finding yourself stressed out and exhausted. Not to mention, when you pack too many things into one day, you can’t even really fully explore and enjoy anything. It’s ok if you don’t visit every single place on your list in one trip. You can save some for next time. Travelling is not only a lot of fun, but a great way to learn about different cultures and gain new insights of the world. With a little bit of preparation, you can ensure that you don’t make any of the mistakes on this list. And sure, while some things are beyond your control - such as flight delays or bad weather - the more prepared you are, the less can go wrong! And that’s a good thing. Do you have any crazy travel stories where things went wrong but perhaps could have been avoided? Or do you know any other mistakes people make while traveling? Share your story in the comments below, so we can learn from each other. If you found this video useful, give it a thumbs up, and share it with your friends, so they too can avoid these travel mistakes.

2023.06.04 16:01 Dittro Where to go before a late departure from Haneda?

Hi guys, I will be solo travelling in Tokyo in July, and on my last day I will be boarding my flight back home at around midnight. As I'd have to check out from my Airbnb around 11am, I was wondering if you guys would have any suggestions on what I could do within that long time frame before I head to the airport? Of course I would assume a 3 hour time gap before my flight, so assuming I reach the airport by 9pm, what else do you guys suggest I do? I did read online about maybe taking a trip to Shinagawa to check out the area, but I don't think I can stay there for 10 hours haha

2023.06.04 15:49 Fyourchickenstrips7 Early Morning Venice Flight

Hi, does anyone know what the 24/7 forms of transportation from Venezia Mestre train station are to the airport? I'm staying by the station, but I'm not sure if they'll be taxis working so early, or buses. Our flight is 8 am, planning to get to the airport at 6 am. Do we call a taxi? If so, does anyone have reputable numbers for around this area? I don't think the bus is running around 6 am, or I can't find the info. TIA

2023.06.04 15:43 daryyyl My Personal Experience: A Singaporean Living in Bangkok

TL;DR: A Singaporean’s comparison and experience of living in Bangkok, AMA.
Recently seen a lot of posts about moving from Singapore to another country and thought I would share my own experiences about moving from Singapore to Bangkok and some pros and cons of each location.
Please kindly take note that this is all from my personal experience and knowledge and may not apply to everyone.

Background:
I (30M) first experienced living and working in Bangkok due to an internship. The internship was mandatory but the location was not specified. I chose Bangkok having never lived there before and ended up liking it so decided to do another internship in Bangkok the following year. After completion, I managed to land a full time job in Bangkok and have been living in Bangkok for 7.5 years now. I am in the hospitality industry.

Visa:
In order to stay legally in Thailand, you’ll need to be on the proper visa. You could come in on visa exemption and then do visa runs, but in the long run, it is not a viable option especially since immigration is cracking down on visa runs.
I have listed essentially the easiest visa’s to obtain to live in Thailand legally.
- Non-Immigrant B: Get hired by a company in Thailand, where they will issue you with a work permit and you are allowed to legally work in the role that is written in the work permit. The visa will be valid so long as you are employed.
- Non-Immigrant ED: Enroll into a language school to learn Thai or join a Muay Thai gym. Typically the visa lasts for a year. Working on this visa is illegal.
- Non-Immigrant O-A & O-X: Retirement visa, you need to be 50 years and above. Working on this visa is illegal.
- Non-Immigrant O (Thai Spouse): Get married to a Thai national. The visa is valid as long as you are legally married. Working on this visa is legal.
- Elite Visa: Essentially a paid visa that allows you to stay legally from 5 years up to 20 years. The price starts at THB 600K (one-time fee) up to THB 2M. Working on this visa is illegal.

Work Opportunities:
From the above mentioned visas, I only have experience with the Non-Immigrant B visa as I am employed in Bangkok. I may decide to change to the Non-Immigrant O (Thai Spouse) visa when I get married to my Thai partner next year.
Getting employed in Thailand is a route that a lot of people choose when first deciding to move to Thailand. There are essentially 2 options that someone could choose:
- Employee: Get hired by a Thai company. There are a list of prohibited jobs for foreigners in Thailand such as hairdresser, Thai massage, tour guide, legal services (you can be a consultant though). Legally there is also a minimum salary for foreigners to earn. For Singaporeans, the minimum salary / month is THB 45K however there are also loopholes in order for employees to avoid paying this much. This minimum salary does not apply to teaching. Some of the most popular jobs for foreigners are in education (teacher), tech, marketing, consulate / embassy, diving instructor, hospitality and work for an MNC.
- Business Owner: Opening your own business is another way to work in Thailand. The most popular registration choice for foreigners is to open a limited company. You will only have ownership of 49% of the company, and the remaining 51% needs to be owned by a Thai person. Many foreigners will put the 51% in their Thai spouse’s name. It is also possible to have 2 Thai’s own the 51% (25.5% each) so that the foreigner still has majority ownership. You can also then apply for a work permit however need to have four Thai workers per foreigner employed and THB 2 M in capital.

Salary & Income:
In general, the salary in Thailand is significantly lower than in Singapore, however the cost of living is also more expensive. My first salary in Bangkok was gross THB 45K / month, take home pay was around THB 38K. That is roughly S$1,500. I lived a mostly Thai lifestyle, with little to no savings each month. Thankfully I am now on a salary higher than if I was in the same position in Singapore. I would advise that a salary of THB 50K / month is the minimum that any Singaporean should be willing to take in order to move to Bangkok. Anything THB 100K / month and you’ll be able to live comfortably on a mixed of local + foreigner lifestyle so long as you have no kids or don’t intend to send them to international school.
The best is if you end up on an expat contract and you will have your basic salary (usually paid in USD) + housing allowance + yearly flight tickets back home + international school fees for your kids paid for. Obviously this is subject to the company but I have heard of people also getting transport allowance, grocery shopping allowance, company car and driver, live-in maid, etc.

Working Life:
Tasks in Singapore get done. And they get done fast. Singapore is efficient and as much as Singaporeans love queuing (for food), they also don’t like waiting. However, working in Singapore can be very competitive. The so called ‘rat race’ starts the moment you enter working life. Depending on the industry, overtime is often expected. The “kiasu” mentality in Singaporeans often causes the over-competitiveness at the workplace.
Working life in Thailand is quite the opposite of Singapore. Thai employees generally take things slower. Decisions that can be made in 1 day in Singapore, can take 1 month in Thailand. Many Thai workers just want to do their 8-10 hours a day, grab a beer after work, go home to sleep and then repeat the next day. Thai employees are also generally less competitive compared to Singaporeans, thus as a Singaporean working in Bangkok, I am able to stand out amongst my Thai colleagues and was able to progress much faster in my career compared to if I was working in the competitive Singaporean environment. In Thailand, “saving face” is very important especially at the management level. The practice of “saving face” is not something that many westerners understand and are used to, thus is often a disadvantage to them.

Condo, Apartments & Houses:
To be honest, I cannot speak about the Singapore property market and prices because I have no firsthand experience. I have never bought or rented any property in Singapore before. I can only share the prices in Bangkok for you guys to compare.
In Bangkok, a typical 1 bedroom condo (30 SQM to 35 SQM) can be found for THB 10K (S$388) to THB 15K (S$582) per month. These condos are typically within a 10 – 20 minute BTS/MRT ride into the city center. The further out you go, the cheaper condos are. Alternatively, the closer you are to the city center, the more expensive the condo’s get.
Local apartments are even cheaper and can be rented under THB10K per month. Some apartments even have rooms for rent that are THB 3000 (S$116) per month, however the room is usually quite small (20 SQM), has no kitchen, sometimes no hot water, sometimes no AC, and is in a very local area of Bangkok. It is literally a room with a bed and a bathroom inside.
There are also houses for rent in Bangkok. There are 2 major types of houses: the first are standalone houses and the second are called townhouses (essentially a house in a gated community). These can range from THB 25K (S$970) to more than THB 100K (S$3880) per month depending on the size, location, age, etc.
Alternatively, if you decide to, foreigners can also legally purchase condos under certain regulations. Every condo has a foreigner quota which essentially every condo need to be 51% majority owned by a Thai national. So if a condo has 100 units, minimum 51 units need to be owned by a Thai national. If the current condo only has 50 units owned by a Thai, then a foreigner is unable to purchase a unit in that condo project until 1 more unit is owned by a Thai. Condos can be bought starting from THB 1M (S$38.8K) to THB 100M (S$3.8M) depending on the size and location.
Owning land in Thailand by foreigners is not allowed. There are some ways and loopholes of getting around it such as setting up a business in Thailand. Lots of foreigners who marry a Thai national end up putting the land under their partners name and by getting a usufruct / right of superficies, it protects the foreigners in the sense that their partner would be unable to sell the land without the permission of the foreigner. It is honestly quite complicated and I personally went through this route.
The townhouse that I purchased cost around THB 12.5M (S$485K) and is roughly 250 SQM (2690 SQFT), with 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, with a decent sized garden and garage large enough for 2 cars. It is in a good location (not in the city center) with a 20 minute drive into the city center. With S$485K, I am not sure if you could even buy a 2 or 3 bedroom HDB in a not so desired district in Singapore.

Food:
Singapore has hawker centers while Bangkok has street food. Street food in Bangkok is cheap, usually starting from THB 40. Singapore hawker centers are relatively affordable although there have been a significant increase in prices over the past couple of years. There are also a wide variety of eateries from food courts to Michelin Starred restaurants, with lots of different types of cuisines in both cities. Prices in both cities can range from cheap to crazy expensive, so it really depends on what kind of budget and lifestyle you have.

Cost Of Living:
It is well known that Singapore has an expensive cost of living, while the cost of living in Bangkok is cheaper. It is not S$1 for a one beer kind of cheap, but it’s definitely cheaper than Singapore. I have not lived in Singapore for the past 9 years so I am not in touch with the current prices in Singapore. So I will just share the prices in Bangkok.
Gym memberships in Bangkok are usually around THB 1000 (S$38) to THB 1500 (S$58) a month. A foot / Thai massage cost THB 250 (S$10) to THB 350 (S$13) per hour, a ticket in the cinema is about THB 250 (S$10). A drink in a bar is around THB 150 (S$6) to THB 250 (S$10) depending on the type of establishment. I could go on and on but in generally most things are cheaper in Bangkok than in Singapore.

Transport:
- Public Transport: Public transport in Singapore is reliable. Living in Singapore, it is generally convenient to take the bus and MRT for transport.
In Bangkok, if you live in the city center you will have no issue using only the BTS & MRT to get around. Buses are not reliable due to the sheer amount of traffic. Alternatively, using motorcycle taxis are also a viable option for short to medium distances. If you lived in the suburbs or even other provinces such as Chiang Mai & Phuket, you’ll either have to buy / rent a car or motorcycle, use Grab or a songthaew (shared pickup truck).
- Motorcycle Ownership: Purchasing your own motorcycle is also a popular option. A new Honda Click 150 can be bought for around THB 61K (S$2.3k).
- Car Ownership: The cheapest first hand car in Singapore is roughly around S$80,000 to S$90,000 (THB 2M to THB 2.3M). On top of that, Singapore’s COE in May (1st bidding) for CAT A closed at S$101,001 (THB 2.5M).
In Thailand, cars start around THB 500K. An entry level Mercedes Benz A-Class will cost around THB 1.9 M (S$74,000). Cheaper cars in Thailand do come with a price and that is the traffic in Bangkok. During peak period, expect your 15 minute car ride to extend to 1 hour or even more depending on your location within the city. Traffic in other provinces is generally much better compared to Bangkok.

Social Circle:
In Singapore, you generally already have a group of friends that you met since high school / university / army (for guys).
Unless you have family or friends already living in Thailand, you’ll need to start from scratch. The easiest way to make friends is usually from your workplace. Another popular option is to use apps such as Meetup.com and Tinder for dating. Some may find it hard at first to make friends with Thai people due to the language barrier if you do not speak Thai and they do not speak much English.

Language:
In Singapore, English is widely spoken. Mandarin Chinese, Tamil and Malay are also used. It is easy to communicate with 99% of the population.
In Thailand, English is not widely used by everyone especially in the areas where there are no/less tourists. Signs (food, road, etc) can often be only written in Thai.

Domestic Travel:
Unless you consider taking the MRT to Sentosa domestic travelling, Singapore does not offer much domestic travel. In Thailand, a 1.5 hour plane ride can take you to Chiang Mai, Phuket, Koh Samui, Khon Kaen, etc. While a 2 hour car drive can take you to Pattaya, Hua Hin, Kanchanaburi, Ayutthaya, etc for quick weekend getaways. Singapore however, is a major hub in Asia and many international flights use Changi Airport as a hub. I also personally prefer Singapore Airlines to Thai Airways.

Safety & Crime:
Singapore is generally extremely safe. Chances of you getting robbed by knife are slim to none. In Thailand, it is also generally safe. Be smart and do not put yourself into dangerous situations and you’ll generally be fine. I have never gotten pickpocketed or robbed or scammed or anything of similarity over my years of living here.

Government:
This is the topic that I prefer not to talk about. In short:
- The Singapore government is stable.
- I have no comment regarding the Thai government, except let’s see what happens in the next couple of months.

TL;DR: A Singaporean’s comparison and experience of living in Bangkok, AMA.

And that’s pretty much it. I do apologize for this being so long. I tried my best to share as much as possible without overdoing it. This post got taken down in askSingapore , so hopefully it doesn't break any rules of this subreddit.
If anyone has any further questions, please feel free to AMA.

2023.06.04 10:54 raindoubt Let's not do this again, please...

The last 2 nights the Blue Bridge has been filled with people partying and hanging out until 4am+. This morning as I was leaving for the airport, multiple cars sped by and/or squeeled away, several people went running, and a loud dispute broke out. I see now that shortly after, PD was called for shots in the vicinity of the Public Museum garage. We did this last summer, and it lead to the shutdown of the bridge after dark and increased PD monitoring in the area. Look, I know people are just looking to hang out and have a good time. It's nice to enjoy the summer weather while we have it, but unsupervised and unregulated partying is so frequently going to devolve into some kind of dispute, especially when there's that many people involved. Unfortunately, this only caters to the view of those who want to paint our cities as lawless crime havens - even though we know it's not the case, and it helps our already overfunded police department attempt to justify further budget increases, or things like the ridiculous drone program they are pushing for right now. I realize the crossover may be small, but please, if you or someone you know is headed to kick it on the bridge on a Friday night, maybe think twice. ✌️

2023.06.04 10:09 HowlsCalcifer31 JR Pass or not??

I have a trip booked to Japan in the next few months with my partner and some friends. We have been reading a lot of differing information on whether to get the JR pass or not. We will be based in Tokyo for the bulk of the trip. We are flying into Haneda airport and staying in Akasaka. We want to see Shibuya, Akihabara, Shinjuku and other major districts. A day trip to Yokohama, Nara, Mt Fugi area and the Kanto area. We will be travelling by train to Kyoto for a few days with a stop enroute to Nagoya to visit the Ghibli park and then a day in Osaka before we head back to Tokyo. Can anyone in Japan, or visited Japan recently, provide any advice to help us decide if we should get the JR pass or not? Thank you in advance.
