2023.06.04 22:10 NotJustSomeMate Concurrence of ADHD and ASD in Relation to Late Diagnosis

I am unsure how many of us are affected by both...but I have come to realize that for myself and some others that were diagnosed later than normal or much later into adulthood one factor that may have contributed is the overshadowing of ASD symptoms by ADHD symptoms...
Therefore with the correction/treatment of ADHD symptoms ASD symptoms can become much more prevalent...especially with those that may have required less support as children or higher functioning as adults versus those that required more support growing up...
I remember when I was younger while I did struggle with certain things and behaviors...my mum just dismissed it all as just behavior issues and me being "hard-headed"...and even though I was diagnosed with ADHD as a child my mum took me off of the medication that was prescribed for me after a month or so because the changes it caused where disturbing to her...so after going another 18 years without medication and constantly struggling with academics and trying to fit in with my peers I was able to get insurance and also medication to address my ADHD...while this helped greatly with my school work and organization...it also made other traits (especially those related to ASD) that I had more prevalent...
As we all know there if more information that is coming out about both disorders and the concurrence of both disorders...and with the increase of information and research more studies being done there may be much more ways to track and diagnose those with both early on...and again while the occurrence of both is still estimated between 14-30% of the ASD population...it is still a huge possibility and can account for many of us being overlooked until later in life which can be harmful in the long run...
Are there any others that can relate or have thoughts on this???

P2 Virtual Selling Accelerator Overview Virtual selling is no longer optional—it’s an absolute necessity. And even if circumstances change, you’ve seen how the ability to sell and close deals virtually can give you the income, lifestyle and retirement you’ve always dreamed of. But as we all know, selling virtually is not the same as selling face to face for a host of reasons. Often the prospects you sell virtually haven’t seen you present for 90 minutes at a seminar. They definitely aren’t in the confined quiet of your office…and they are most likely being distracted by whatever is going on at home. Plus you don’t have the rapport of being face to face, or the non-verbal communication so important in selling. That’s why—in just a few days—Ethan and I are hosting a 5-day crash course called Presuppostional Playbook (P2) Virtual Selling ACCLERATOR. Normally, we’d push out the launch of a new program 30-60 days, but for obvious reasons, THIS CANNOT WAIT. If you’re willing to give us 90 minutes for 5 straight days, we’ll give you everything you need to master ALL aspects of the virtual selling process, from that first appointment to getting paid. And yes, this even includes technical training and lead generation. Whether you’ve never made a sale virtually and are terrified by the idea… or you currently sell virtually but want to take your sales to the next level, the P2 Virtual Selling Accelerator gives you the scripts, steps, questions and even presentations we’ve used to sell virtually for the past 10 years…and it accellerates your results because you’ll get it all in just 5 days! 2023.06.04 22:09 Ferretbadass Is it normal to be hessitant about bottom surgery? (MtF)

Hi there! My partner (MtF, 22) is going to a consultation regarding bottom surgery, and for the first time in their transition they're not sure how they feel. She has been so confident with every other aspect of their transition, whether it be HRT, vocal training or wardrobe changes, she's worked incredibly hard and done incredible for it. But recently she's become not sure about the bottom surgery process, especially as some gender things have been raised and they now use she/they interchangably, and have found some instances of gender envy from masc presenting characters. A
big part of her worry is that she is alone with this feeling as they don't have any trans elders or anything, so could you help send some reassurance to her that at the very least, she isn't alone in this?

My boyfriend is really defensive, immediately argues with my feelings, uses things he did for me against me when I bring up something I need to change.
I already understand this qualifies as an abusive relationship but I have a part in it too and I know my Capricorn Mercury is not compatible with this impulsive Aries stuff.
I can’t help thinking he’s a liar and doesn’t care about anything but himself. But he’s a sweet caring Taurus. …..?

Anime Movie(すずめの戸締まり)! Here’s options for downloading or watching The Summer streaming the full movie online for free on 123movies & Reddit,1movies, 9movies, and yes movies, including where to watch the anticipated anime movie at home. Is Suzume available to stream English sub & dub? Is Suzume streaming? Is watching Suzume on Crunchyroll, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Netflix, or Amazon Prime? Yes, we have found an authentic streaming option / service.

Watch Now: The Summer Online Free

The wait is almost over! Suzume — the latest Japanese animation film — is coming to theaters this weekend. Luckily, we have you covered on all the ways you can watch it!

While movie fans will be able to see the smash-hit film Suzume in cinemas and theaters starting on April 14, 2023, those unable or unwilling to see the film outside, need not worry, as it will likely be made accessible for streaming soon. Makoto Shinkai's new film Suzume (The Summer) will hit American cinemas this Friday, and every indication suggests Suzume will be as popular here as it has been in Japan. Furthermore, American viewership will be bolstered by all the fans who access the film via an online streaming service.

One of the most anticipated Japanese animated films of the next period, The Summer, is directed by the legendary Makoto Shinkai, who is the same face behind the successful masterpiece “Your Name”. The The Summer movie is set to be released later this year, however, the production house wanted to let the Otakus be in suspense by releasing a new Trailer. The film is produced by CoMix Wave Films and distributed by Toho.

Is Suzume streaming? A new feature film from Makoto Shinkai is always something to treasure. Recent hits Your Name and Weathering With You have garnered widespread praise for their beauty and storytelling, creating high hopes for Suzume.

The director, Makoto Shinkai, is a well-known figure in the animated movies space. Best known for his work “Your Name” or as it is called originally, “Kimi No Na Wa“, he has directed several masterpieces to date. His work is appreciated by many. Therefore, there’s no doubt how wonderful The Summer is going to be, and just like you all, as a part of the culture, we are excited too.

Sony has acquired the exclusive rights to distribute the film online, which means fans can expect to find the movie on the entertainment company's Crunchyroll brand anime streaming service. Unfortunately, at this time, there has been no official announcement from either Sony or Crunchyroll as to when Suzume will be available online. Currently, for fans who want to see the film in the cinema can order tickets online for a show via the Crunchyroll website.

So where can you watch Suzume? Is it on HBO Max? What about Netflix? Here’s everything we know about how, when, and where you can watch The Summer:

That being said, the film is being distributed internationally by Crunchyroll with Sony, and they were responsible for bringing the movie to theaters. The movie saw its theatrical release in March 2023, but fans still have to wait for streaming it online.

Since Crunchyroll holds the rights to the anime and currently has the Demon Slayer: To The Swordsmith Village anime series available for streaming, it is believed that the movie as well will eventually find itself on the platform. However, Crunchyroll is yet to give any official confirmation or details regarding the specifics, making the fans

The film is director Makoto Shinkai's seventh major animated film release, but if the previous two films, namely Your Name and Weathering With You are any indications of how Suzume will do, then it is likely to be one of this year's best anime movies. Like Suzume, both Your Name and Weathering With You follow the story of average teenagers who are suddenly forced to come to grips with supernatural forces they do not understand, but must nevertheless overcome. In addition, Suzume is being produced by Japanese anime production house CoMix Wave Films which has a long history of collaboration with Shinkai dating back to his first video productions.

Will Suzume Be On HBO Max?

No, Suzume will not be on HBO Max since it’s not a Warner Bros. movie. The company announced last year that they would no longer send their theatrical films directly to the streamer. Instead, they’ve implemented a 45-day window between theatrical premieres and HBO Max releases.

Will Suzume Be On Netflix?

No, Suzume will not be on Netflix — at least not any time soon. While it’s possible it may come to the streamer at some point in the future, you’ll just have to head out to a movie theater or wait for it to become available on digital platforms in the meantime.

Is The Summer on Hulu?

Viewers are saying that they want to view the new anime movie The Summer on Hulu. 2023.06.04 22:08 HorseRadish98 Host your own community if Reddit's API rules go into effect

Hi everyone, with the new API limitations possibly taking effect at the end of the month, I wanted to make a post about a self-hosted Reddit alternative, Lemmy.
I'm very new to their community and want to give a very honest opinion of their platform for those who may not know about it. I'm sure some of you have already heard about it, and I've seen posts of Lemmy(ers?) posting that everyone neeeeeeds to switch immediately. I don't want to be one of those posters.

Why do we need an alternative?

I won't go into all of the details here, as there are now dozens of posts, but essentially Reddit is killing off 3rd party apps with extremely high pricing to access their data. To most of us who have been with Reddit for years, this is just the latest in a long line of things Reddit has changed about the site to be more appealing to Wall Street. I don't want to argue here if the sky is falling or if people should or shouldn't be leaving Reddit, I'm simply here showing an alternative I think has promise.
Links if you do want to find out more of what's happening
Apollo Developer explaining how it will effect his one app
Mod post on how these changes will effect their communities
Hour long interview with Apollo Dev for more detail

What is it?

Lemmy is a "federated" Reddit alternative. Meaning there is no "center" server, servers interconnect to bring content to users. If you use Mastadon, it's exactly like Mastadon. I view it like Discord, where there are many servers (they call them instances) and inside those servers are different communities. You can belong to a memes community on one server and another server. The difference is these communities are in a Reddit forum format, and you pick your own home screen, meaning you can subscribe to communities from other servers.
Long story short, you can subscribe to as many communities (subreddits) as you want from wherever you are.
The downside is that it's confusing as hell to wrap your head around, and for most users it requires explaning. The developers know this, Mastadon had to release a special wizard to help people join, and I think Lemmy will need to do something similar.
So essentially, there are communities (analogous to subreddits) that live on instances (analogous to servers). People can sign up for any instance they want, and subscribe not only communities on that instance, but any Lemmy instance. To me, that's pretty neat, albeit complicated.

Pros so far:

Cons so far:

Sure, but how does SelfHosted come in?

Since Lemmy is "federated", these instances come from separate servers. One thing I see about Lemmy right now is that there are a lot of "general" instances, each with a memes community, a movies, music, whatever, but there aren't a lot of the specific communities that brought people to Reddit. Woodworking, Trees, Art, those niche communities we all love are missing because there is not a critical mass of people.
This is where selfhosting comes in. Those communities don't fit well on other instances because those instances are busy managing their own communities. For example, there are several gaming communities, but there are no specific communities for specific games. No Call of Duty, no Mass Effect, no Witcher, etc. Someone could run an RPG specific instance and run a bunch of specific RPG communities. Same with any other genre.
This is where I see Lemmy headed, most people join the larger instances, but then bring in communities they care about.

What's it like running an instance?

Right now most communities there are very tiny, my personal instance has about 10 people on it. That is quite different from the subreddit alternative, but I see that as a positive personally. I'm hoping to grow my fledgling community into something neat.
If the hammer falls I see a mild migration to Lemmy. I don't think it'll be like the Digg migration, but I think there could be many users who give up on Reddit and I want them to have a stable landing place. Communities I've come to love I want to be able to say "Hey, I'm over here now, you're welcome to join me."
There are several million 3rd party app users who access Reddit through 3rd party apps. If only 10% of them decide to switch to an alternative once they are no longer able to access Reddit, that means a couple hundred thousand people will be looking for new homes. I think we have an opportunity to provide them.
I'm coming up on character limit, so if anyone is interested - the only requirements are a domain name and a host. Everything is dockerized, and I'm happy to share my docker compose with anyone. I followed the guide here but there were a lot of bumps and bruises along the way. I'm happy to share what I learned.
Anyway, thanks for reading all this way. I recognize this may not be for everyone, but if you ever wanted to run your own community, now is your chance!

Hey guys, after 5+ years of being out of the hobby I’m getting back into it but some things have changed since I was last active.
I see there is an eBay standard envelope shipping option that is affordable and seems to be a good option for sending lower end cards. Is this just a normal PWE that includes tracking? Is it a bubble envelope?
How do you ship your lower end cards that aren’t in lots, to make it affordable for the buyer?
Thanks for the input!

2023.06.04 22:07 _takemesomewherenice It's getting worse again

Fuck I really don't wanna go down this road again. I've been miserable so fucking many times in my life so I know exactly what it feels like when it's about to get really bad again. Not that I'm ok the rest of the time, I'm just really good at pretending, or well at least good enough. People close to me know I struggle but nobody knows how much. They know I'm anxious about stuff and depressed but dismiss it because I've always managed to still get good grades somehow, so bad could it really be? Now I'm stuck in my head again, overworked and burnt out and no time to take a break and even if I had time, my brain wouldn'r let me recharge anyways, the thoughts never leave me alone. I kinda wish my random knee pain was cancer so I'd have a reason to feel miserable, quit everything, idk. I know that's majorly fucked up towards people who had traumatic experiences with cancer but that just makes me feel like a worse person and does nothing to change those thoughts. I envy people who can let go, just lose control and spiral - I've always been so fucking controlled it feels like I'm suffocating myself with my thoughts. I think I really do love my girlfriend but I'm honestly just way too fucked up for this to work. My last break up was just such a mess, I tried to process it and heal from it but if I'm being honest every tiny similarity screams at me to run because I can't take it. Now she texted me she fucked up and she needs to talk to me and I've no idea what that realistically could be but one thought is worse than the last and I was already so fucking close to relapsing today anyways before she wrote that because I feel like a fucking failure and now this... I stumbled across a post (a tumblr screenshot I think?) about death, how that person hopes it feels like falling asleep in the car as a kid and being carried to your bed by your loving parent, just peaceful, like coming home. And god I haven't felt like I'm truly home in years. I just want my brain to be quiet, so my life doesn't exclusively alternate between wanting to end everything and trying to recover. Joke is, it's quite the possibility it's never gonna get any better for me, even my therapist acknowledged that therapy doesn't seem to be working like it should. I know my thoughts are irrational bullshit but that doesn't change my emotions, no matter what I try. I'm so god damn tired of trying. But like I said, I'm way too controlled to actually do anything radical, like you, kms or something. So I guess I'll keep pretending, relapsing in secret while still being so in control I don't leave any visible scars, and hoping it will get better some day, hoping against all odds it feels. Because if I don't hope, I'd have to make some really hard and selfish decisions and I hate making decisions, so I'll just keep telling myself sleeping another 10 hours will magically fix me, and if it doesn't, sleep is the closest thing to death but temporary.

2023.06.04 22:07 randomthrowaway30s 38 [M4F] California/US - Career focused guy looking for friendship or more

Just turned 38 and realized that by focusing on my career, I have been actively avoiding any kind of companionship outside the realm of people I see on a daily or weekly basis. Everyone around me is either married or in a serious relationship. I have some casual friends but outside of that, I have felt the impact of me purposely distancing myself from women I could have made a connection with. I'm hoping to change that by finding someone that I can have great conversations with and put smiles on each other's faces.
I haven't been on any dating apps for years and when I did, I met with people I couldn't connect with on a deeper level.
About me:
I am an introvert by nature but am always pushing myself to go outside my comfort zone to socialize. I'm slim, active, have no kids, and love animals. My co workers always ask me if I can house sit while they go on vacation and happily do it. I enjoy cooking for people, especially my co workers and I frequently cook batches of BBQ or homemade chili. I work in IT and love helping people. I like to make my rounds around my work while there is downtime and see how everyone is doing. I'm a huge baseball fan and love the SF Giants. If you happen to be a Dodger's fan, things might work between us ;). I'm a big fan of breweries even though I am not an avid drinker but it's always fun to try new beers in a public area. For TV shows, I enjoy watching The Office, Seinfeld, and Frasier as my "comfort" shows.
If you would like to know more about me, send me a private message. I'd like to keep things casual when we first chat to see if there's a good connection. Tell me a bit about yourself in the opening message :)
Just got catfished twice here so far, so a verification photo would be nice.

2023.06.04 22:07 draghead Should I tell my Mum I sold my Clarinet?

Basically it was a very expensive instrument and I sold it at about 1/3 the price. I know if I tell my Mum she will go absolutely ape but at the same time I feel like I'm trying to save our relationship since my parents divorce. She used to play the clarinet and I kind of got it through a sponsorship. I don't think it will help but I don't like lying, then again I've never tried consistently keeping a secret like that. I sometimes think she's a narc until I realise I'm actually the narc. I worry about her emotional state but also undervalue her as a person. I don't know what to do because I don't know how to change. I sold it because I'm in debt. I genuinely don't know what to do but am also looking for attention through this post. It's all part of a general personality crisis which I am shortly going to get help for. The general crux is do I tell her, though? I deeply fear what Might happen.

2023.06.04 22:06 Least-Experience-858 4.5 hrs into GOW 2018

Already enjoying it much more than Ragnorak. As a new PS user (Dec 2022) I felt heavily inclined to play Ragnorak as one of PlayStations staples. Needless to say I came off very disappointed, I was not a big fan of the story and partially because it bored me to death. Especially with ironwood section and other predominantly Atreus focused sections that made me lose interest only to regain it back probably at the last 2 hours of the game. I’ve started playing the 2018 GOW and so far I’m thoroughly enjoying this game a lot more than Ragnorak and tho it’s 4+ years old, the combat does not feel like a step back compared to Ragnorak, I’m pleasantly surprised at how good the game feels and it feels more engaging as I feel like there’s more enemies. The initial fight with “The stranger” felt so much better than anything from Ragnoraks first half. Curious to know if others share the same feeling. I know many will scrutinize me for liking the 2018 GOW more than Ragnorak as Rag is probably a “better” version of the 2018 game but it just doesn’t feel that way to me. Maybe my thought process will change once I’ve finished it but for now this game has kept me a lot more interested in the story.

2023.06.04 22:06 Mowgli2k Tony Zierra's SK13 movie

Hi all. If you're unaware, Tony is a US producedirector, who was responsible for the "Filmworker" documentary.
I was lucky to be on a zoom chat with Tony this evening - he was talking about his new project, "SK13" that is about Eyes Wide Shut. He started making the film before Filmworker, it's been in production for almost a decade.
Listening to him talk, it's potentially mindblowing - he mentioned that he saw EWS on release date and there was a moment that he found absolutely amazing/fascinating. When he saw the film again shortly after, that moment was gone.
He later spoke to Leon Vitali as he became confused as to whether he'd seen it or imagined it but Leon said that it had indeed been removed. This alone is a very significant thing to say, as you'd imagine.
This film will focus on this and how it changes the whole understanding of EWS and changes the interpretion in quite a significant manner. Apparently there will be many interesting interviews in the film. Many hours of recordings took place.
He emphasised that it's not about conspiracy theories, not a sex scene, not about SK being killed, the CIA etc, more about Kubrick's perpective/ the message he wanted to relay. It's about EWS but also SK's entire ouevre, style, work rate etc. It may have a big role in changing our viewpoint on SK altogether (in a positive way, it's another layer of the onion being peeled).
I'm sorry that I'm not able to say more as no-one knows more, we will have to wait for the film, but all I can say is that it's something to be extremely excited about. Apparently whatever this "moment" was will appear in the film. HOW EXCITING IS THIS?? !!
There is no release date yet for this film, but it seems to be mainly finished, so hopefully we're looking at months rather than years.
(If anyone else reading this was on the call, feel fre to correct me if I've translated/interpreted anything wrong) . Thanks.

2023.06.04 22:06 chromaticfrogk Looking for a book about tragedies of the past

Ok so I don't know how to explain this, I hope it will make sense. I'm not asking for a book with all those tropes, of course, but something that would fit this vibe ?
I'm looking for books about longing for a past that's long gone by, but not about the protagonist's past ? Like, the protagonist goes through their own journey, but it is plagued by grief felt by others. Stories about tragedies that happened long ago, that you can't change, the characters can only learn how to come to terms with those events.
Or anything about the protagonist progressively learning about things they are helpless to change.
Stories about how much the past affects and changes us as people.
Fantasy/surnatural would be nice, especially if it's modern or more grounded in reality.
(I apologize for any potential grammatical errors, English is not my first language :) )

2023.06.04 22:05 Zepanda66 When exactly did the Netflix binge model lose steam/appeal for you?

I feel like it was around the time House of Cards Season 3, orange is the new black season 3, Daredevil Season 1 dropped. Netflix were on a roll content wise. But I can't pinpoint what exactly changed from the perspective of viewers to want to go back to week to week content at that specific point in time. Could it be that Game of Thrones was at all time high with season 5 and Better Call Saul came out that year to and was giving us quality tv each week reminding us of how it used to be?

2023.06.04 22:05 missbene27 Need advice, feeling overwhelmed!

So I’ve been talking to my guy for about 6 months now. We started off as a penpals, but our dynamics changed and feelings developed. We talk daily on the phone, sometimes hours a day. Im working on being able to visit him soon. Things are going well between us. However, I have some hesitations. My guy is currently incarcerated in California, I live in London uk. The time difference makes things challenging for us to communicate at times, but we do our best. My guy’s release date is next year, but his working on his appeal so he can be released sometimes this year. We had conversations about a future together, I can see a future with him. However, I get so overwhelmed whenever I think about all the obstacles and challenges that our relationship faces. And often wonder what the likelihood of our relationship succeeded. Not only is it difficult with dealing with the fact that his in prison but also dealing with the fact his in another country, we have an 8 hour time difference. Also my guy has some trust issues. His trust issues at times pose an even greater challenge than him being incarcerated. He said his going to work on his trust issues. I love him very much and I think what we have is special and worth fighting for, he has expressed the same feelings. So I know that we are both on the same page regarding that. I have invested so much into this relationship and I badly want things to work. I’m afraid that it might not, is this all just a pipe dream in my head. Has anyone been in a long distance international prison relationship? Or just in general. Please I need some advice on how I can best navigate this. Thank you.

2023.06.04 22:05 WhyThisHappensToMe1 I am a loser and i will forever be

Some people will say "if you have that mentality you will be one", i know but i have tried to change many times but always something fucks me over. My life has had moments when i was happy with no worries and it was amazing, then it all just went downhill. I went from the top to the absolute bottom. Everytime something nice hapoens with me, there is always something bad hidden behind it. I just want to cry but i can't even do that, because i don't want to make my mom worry. Like i try to focus on the positive but sometimes the negative is so much i just want to cry so much. I don't have anyone with whom i can be open with because everyone just treats me as their second choice and doesn't really care about how i feel unless they want something from me and yk what i accept that fact, i have stopped caring anymore and accepted i will have to be alone and trust no one. I feel so confused and annoyed in my life at this point. I don't even wanna think about it i just want to give up. Yk fucking what, one time i called a suicide helpline and they didn't even pick up. I am trying my best but i don't kniw if it will be enough. I don't expect anyone to read my posts when i post here but i just want to put my thoughts out there because i have no one else to tell them to.

2023.06.04 22:05 onebasix Brand New to PTCG and PTCGL coming from MTG

I have a couple of questions about PTCGL.
What is the best way to get credits to craft cards?
Also, are there any good websites that share stats and metagame information, especially meta decks that will help me understand how to build a competitive deck.
I've built a sweet Miraidon deck utilizing Flaffy and Raikou to get a lot of benched pokemon, fill them with energy, and then attack with Raikou V who relies on benched pokemon for damage. I've gone far with this deck so far but I am starting to feel like I need to dive more into the meta!

2023.06.04 22:04 ifuckedupwife I Miss you.. M

M... You are in my mind and heart everyday all day. And I ask myself why?? Is it because im lonely?? Is because I have a hard time letting go?? Is it because you are still my wife?? And haven't Divorced me yet?? Is that a sign??? I don't know why i think like this??? You've been with E since February of last year. Only two months after it was over. I know I brought this on myself I was a horrible partner, husband and friend I was a P.O.S Drunk who took you for granted. I lied, I cheated. I was abusive. And I'am truly sorry and very regretful for all of it. I understand why you had to leave you gave so much to me you had nothing left for you yourself and i didnt see what i was doing to you. I was so wrapped up in trying to forget my past by being a sloppy drunk i forgot to look at my present and future and see the person that would change my life forever. All you asked me to do was get the help I needed and i was to selfish.. it took you leaving me to open my eyes only then did i seek help i really needed. I started going to therapy and have been going since you left January of 2021 you still gave me a chance to prove myself to you and i fucked that up by cheating on you after i got out of rehab for the second time. There is no excuse for me being a shitty human being i can't blame anything in my past for that just because i was abused should have made me treat people differently i should have been kinder but it wasn't until you called me out on my bullshit. Even at the end you still showed me Unconditionally love i've never felt that before. To be honest it scared the shit out of me and made me want to run because that's what I've always done. I didn't know how to communicate with you. I didn't want to open up and have you see me as less of a man. But thats what I should have done because I honestly know you would have never judged me. There are so many things I feel I owe you. So many apologies but the words I'm sorry lose meaning after being said all the time and not changing the behavior. I Never wanted to change for anyone until you left me. I've realized you were my home my teacher my friend my partner my lover my wife. I'm not telling you these things. To get you back. I'm telling you because you helped me open my eyes and I owe you a thank you and an apology. I'm greatful you've found the happiness I couldn't give you.. I'm only putting this out here because I needed to say this to you. But will never have the chance to speak with you again. You are truly the best thing to ever happen to me. Lesson learned. I miss you and hope one day you can forgive me. I love you because you showed me what that means. Your shithead D

2023.06.04 22:04 __ferg__ First batch of Bingo mini reviews

My second Bingo, feels like I'm getting the hang of it! Last year I tried to write some small reviews, but that escalated completely and I had to break it down into various review posts. This year I really try to make it as short as possible and fit it all in 1 post. Yeah, worked great. No idea how to make them short enough to fit 25 reviews in one post and not create a wall of text no one's ever going to read…
Anyway here's the card so far and some mini reviews.
First my personal star rating explained:

5* range:

The library at mount Char by Scott Hawkins [5*]
I'll copy shamelessly my original review:
Just finished The library at mount char. Hahaha, WTF did I just read? 5*. Recommended if you want something weird… The first half reads like some mix between something out of a fever dream and someone watching an 80s action B movie, high, and taking only the weirdest things they come across. Even more remarkable in the end the different things come together and actually make sense. Somewhat. And the mix between really disturbing stuff, hilarious characters and laugh out loud moments was also, unexpected I guess?
Now after some books in between, I can say that I remember the weird first half far better than the second and some of the most memorable characters from the whole bingo sheet (so far) are out of this one.
Tags: weird; dark; well no clue how to tag that book properly
Bingo squares: Horror(h), Bookclub or read along

4* range:

Forge of the high mage (Path to ascendancy 4) by Ian C. Esslemont [4,5*]
Probably my favorite Esslemont Malazan book so far. I don't think I have to say much more, this is the 4th sequel in a prequel series for a "spin off" series. If you reach this book, you are probably already addicted. Just a small heads up, if you didn't like Kellanveds Reach, this book improves everywhere. spoiler free review
Tags: Malazan; MultiPOV; Action oriented
Bingo squares: Sequel(h), released 2023, Coastal/Island setting(h), Title with a title(h)
The infernal Battalion (The shadow campaigns 5) by Django Wexler [4*]
I started reading this series last year for Bingo Review book 1 and finished for this years. And while the military focus from book 1 stays prominent it also adds some politics in later books. But the most outstanding thing is something about characters. It's hard to find authors who write good opposite sex characters, but this is probably the only male author I read who made all his female characters so much more realistic than the males. I could name 2 male characters with a somewhat filled out past and motivation and characterization that goes above "good at his job, villain, comic relief, etc" (and with 2 I'm already generous). But I could easily name half a dozen female characters with a rich history, believable agendas and a satisfying character arc. Overall a solid 4* series, with book 2 the weakest and 3 and 4 my favorites.
Tags: Flintlock fantasy; French Revolution inspired; LGBTQ POV
Bingo squares: Sequel(h), angels and demons (maybe?)
Jade legacy (Greenbone saga 3) by Fonda Lee [4*]
Another series which I started last years bingo and finished this year. Yeah I even use it for the same square, call me lazy ;) Review book 1, since then nothing really changed, all my points from book 1 are still valid in the last one, solid 4* series overall.
Tags: Godfather meets fantasy; family; Asian inspired setting; 20th century setting
Bingo squares: Sequel, Coastal or Island setting, POC author, Mundane job(h) (one protagonist is a doctor)
Prosper's Demon by K. J. Parker [4*]
The world is full of demons. 72936 to be exact ( theydidthemath ), are looking for hosts. And while They can't die, extracting Them from their victim hurts Them. A lot. Only downside, it can also damage the vessel. So you need a special kind of person for the job.
We follow an exorcist (who is definitely not a nice person) on his personal vendetta, visit the court and meet Prosper (and his title-giving demon) who is some kind of universal genius. The story is witty (or sometimes outright funny) and I wouldn't have thought it possible to write about bronze sculpture casting in such an interesting way. Oh, and I really liked the ending…
Tags: First person single POV; unreliable narrator
Bingo squares: novella, angels and demons,

3* range:

The steel remains (A land fit for heroes 1) by Richard Morgan. [3,5*]
Review. I now also finished book two and the trend continues. A lot of focus on characters and world building, but still not much happening.
Tags: Dark fantasy; Gay/lesbian POV (2 out of 3); Fantasy/Sci-fi mix
Bingo squares: published in the 2000s, alternate realities (h)
Qube (Die Welt der Hologrammatica 2) by Tom Hillenbrand [3*]
Like the first one, this was more a tech thriller with Sci-fi elements than full science fiction. It was an easy and fast read, but when I finished no characters and nothing in the plot left a lasting impression. Like in book 1 people still struggle with AI but this book adds nothing new. The interesting theme from the first book [what happens, when people upload their brains in quantum computers and can change bodies without problem, to our relationships, because who do you love when a person is today an 18 year old girl, tomorrow a 80 year old dude and next week an elf], is completely gone here. Instead we get humanity's hunt for immortality. But instead of exploring what that would mean for humankind we get a McGuffin everyone is looking for. And we get a weird out of touch fantasy side plot, that may make sense in the end but felt completely useless overall. So this book didn't add anything interesting to the world created in book 1.
Tags: Tech thriller; AI; No English translation
Bingo squares: Sequel, Queernorm setting, Mundane job (journalist, CEO, E-gamer, UNO agent)

2* range:

The long way to a small angry planet by Becky Chambers [2,5*]
Just not my cup of tea, neither the characters nor the story ever really clicked with me and in an extremely character focused story that's probably the worst that can happen. Here we follow a new crew member on a spaceship and learn more about the rest of the crew in a nearly episodic way (it felt we get a very detailed focus on each member of the crew one after another) while the ship is on its way on a deep space mission.
Tags: space opera; found family; LGBTQ
Bingo squares: Queernorm setting, bookclub or read along, Mundane job(h) (I mean, she's hired as a clerk)

1* range:

Ha, nothing so far. Overall the start wasn't to bad, with nothing catastrophically bad....
So now, while I have some more squares planned and some are just super easy to fill, I struggle to find something for: * Elemental magic * Druid
If anyone has some "must reads" for those squares, I'm more than willing to give them a try. Bonus points if it's a novella and stand alone. (I don't want to start so many new series for bingo, because last year added so many + those I read already outside of bingo...)
