I'm a big fan of reading stuff with e-ink devices. I find it helps me focus, eliminates distractions, and enables greater reading comprehension. At least, that's the ideal.
But with the Boox Tab X, there are a number of software frustrations that make me think that the product simply isn't ready, despite the hardware (which I do think is good). Or maybe I'm using the device wrong? I'm not sure.
I really just want to be able to read and annotate articles and PDFs, and sync the latter to Zotero. But even getting this simple functionality is extremely difficult.

1. Almost all non-PDF apps (like Instapaper or Readwise Reader) render article text in ugly, hard-to-read bold font for some unknown reason. Articles just don't look good.
2. There are no good PDF reading apps. Xodo doesn't have good pagination and requires constant switching between viewing and annotation modes. NeoReader is incapable of making highlights that sync to Zotero (because they're just "drawn" on the document). Foxit insists on saving a new copy of the PDF every time I open it and make annotations, which makes it unsyncable. Pagination with anything besides NeoReader is super janky and weird-looking.
3. There is no good way (that works reliably) to sync PDFs with another device. Zoo for Zotero is incompatible with Boox. Syncthing works 80% of the time, but is pretty janky.

Am I just bad at using the device, or is this pretty much par for the course? Does anyone have a workflow that actually works?

What's striking, you see, is this...let's call it an obsession, with "prompt engineering" in the AI realm right now. It's like we're trying to run before we can even walk. Let's put this into perspective: the act of composing prompts is currently nothing more than a convoluted game of Chinese whispers. We're wrapping queries in layers of unnecessary information, obscuring the core request, and then expecting our AI to strip away the chaff and reveal the kernel of our intention.

It's like we're treating the AI as a mind reader, a diviner, more concerned with interpreting the intangible implications of a prompt rather than the prompt's explicit intent. This is an inefficient, wasteful approach that not only burdens the machine but also, and more importantly, clouds the communication between human and AI.

Let's consider your example: "You are x, x mean y,z,w..., answer this question q." Here we have a prompt that's so drenched in irrelevant details it's practically drowning. The response? "As x, q ... answer a." But why? Why are we making the machine spend time and computational resources to filter out the noise and grasp the real query?

It's like asking the AI to build a cathedral, then tear it down to get the foundation. The core of what we're trying to communicate is "As x, q..." So why are we building an unnecessary edifice around it? What are we gaining from this convoluted process?

Sure, we might think we're being "smart," adding nuances and subtleties to the prompt. But really, what we're doing is complicating a process that should be simple, direct. It's a manifestation of over-engineering, an excessive application of resources that could be streamlined to great effect.

The problem here, fundamentally, is the gross misunderstanding of what an AI, especially language models, should do. It’s not a machine built to decipher riddles or complex codes, but a tool to assist with clear, direct communication. We should be striving for simplicity and clarity in our prompts, not shrouding them in an intricate latticework of unnecessary information.

We need to step back and reassess our approach. The most elegant solutions are often the simplest ones. Instead of spending our time creating intricate mazes for our AIs to navigate, we should be focusing on clear, concise requests. Let's use our engineering prowess where it counts, not to create labyrinthine complications, but to build more efficient, effective communication. Only then can we truly leverage the capabilities of these sophisticated language models, unburdened by our misguided attempts to outwit ourselves.

My 11 year old desktop died on me after moving out of my apartment, fair enough... Now, I am considering a laptop instead, as I am travelling a lot more than before. It seems however, choosing a laptop can be quite complicated (escpecially on budget). So, I would appreciate your help.

• Total budget and country of purchase. Around 1000 Euros, but nothing fixed, within Europe
• Are you open to refurbs/used? I am open to the idea of a refurbished system.
• How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance > Build Quality > Form = Battery Life
• How important is weight and thinness to you? I do not plan to carry it everyday, but rather 2-8 times a month. As I have a nice backpack with a good volume, I don't think I care much about weight and thinness.
• Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Planning on using external monitors, so smaller the better, but mostly indifferent.
• Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I can see myself getting into 3D printing in 2 years of time, but I don't suppose it will require much computing power. For gaming, see below.
• If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Mostly interested in indie games. Last games I played on PC were Inscryption, Hades, Death's Door, Celeste, Overcooked 2, etc. I would like to be able play something like Elden Ring or the next thing from the series with moderate settings at a decent FPS. I can also see myself get into MOBA again after a 6 year break.
• Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good connectability would be priority here regarding Bluetooth and WiFi. A decent touchpad and keyboard backlight would be nice to have, but no deal-breaker. Everything else is extra.

Hi! I was newly diagnosed with POTS on Wednesday, but have had symptoms since I was 13. For almost 40 years, I have been seen as a hypochondriac, dramatic and lazy by my family. So, I got really good at ignoring my symptoms and pushing through. I’ve never actually fainted, so that makes it easier to pretend. The electrophysiologist who diagnosed me suggested that I read “The Dysautonomia Project,” and I have never felt so seen!
I’m finding the recommendations a bit daunting though. Mainly, the compression socks, spanx, and the increase in salt. I had already been using 2 packets of liquid IV a day to help me stay hydrated. Apparently, that’s not enough? And how the hell do you survive in the summer in 90 degree heat wearing spanx and compression socks?
I’ve been doing the exercise of 30 minutes 3 x a week in the form of walking (though I injured my foot in January and that has slowed down).

In 2014, I was still rather new to comics and had just finished backreading years of trades of X-Men when Ms. Marvel came out. I remember how many headlines she made and how many of my friends, some of whom were purely DC readers at the time, read Ms. Marvel. I hadn’t heard a single bad thing about the book, and once I read it, I learned why. Ms. Marvel was so beloved that it didn’t shock me that the MCU wanted to adapt the property despite it being rather new comparatively. It was a moment in pop culture history and a breath of fresh air. And she can’t get a book with her name on it for her death?
No, death in comics is nothing new, but at least when Doctor Strange or Wolverine died they each got their own “Death of” events that built up to that moment and showcased them. Hell, even when Ultimate Peter Parker died, he was front and center of his own cover and in his own book, which is more than Kamala is getting. Death of Doctor Strange miniseries…Death of Wolverine…Peter Parker’s “fallen friend.” Ms. Marvel dies in just another issue of Spider-Man, not even an event or anything with her own name on it. Just a Spider-Man issue.

Peter’s death issue had him front and center, a shadow looming over his loved ones who realize he’s no longer there and must live without him. Kamala’s cover has her in the upper righthand corner, amid a hero she’s never met (the Thing), one she barely knows (Steve), two of her mentors (Carol and Tony), and a hero she interacted with once (Wolverine), but the focus is on Peter Parker, the biggest subject on the image. This cover is just emblematic of how little everyone involved cared about this character and her legacy –she’s there to make Peter Parker sad. Peter’s pain is the focus of this story, and the reason she died was give him another thing to be sad about. Her death is meant to motivate Spider-Man and be another source of grief for the hero. But how many women have to die for Peter’s guilt complex?
Gwen Stacy died in June 1973, and Kamala’s death occurs 50 years later. Gwen’s death was certainly a vital component in why Zeb Wells and company decided to kill of Kamala now — and in a Spider-Man comic of all places. In his interview with Popverse about Amazing Spider-Man #26, Wells notes this death was “the most shocking event to happen to Spider-Man in 50 years.” Shock value was at the forefront for this story, and the way these creatives talked about killing Kamala feels eerily reminiscent of how writers have infamously talked about fridging characters in the past. Wells was laughing in his interview about how many people would be mad at him and when asked how editorial reacted, he’d mostly mentioned them being “shocked” but pleased. Wells replied, “Nick [Lowe]’s a mad man, so he was completely down…I’m very excited for people to read issue #26.”
In these comments, I’m reminded of how Gerry Conway killed Gwen Stacy all those years ago — the shock value death these men wanted to celebrate by killing off another woman in a way that was just as unexpected. Conway “grinned and explained” his idea behind killing Gwen, adding, “She and Peter are terrific together and make each other happy. But that’s not what Spider-Man is about. It’s about pain and power and the responsibility that comes with it. There’s nowhere to take the relationship without betraying what Spider-Man is about.”

As moderators we've seen this community grow quite a bit for the last few months! With this comes increased requests, more community engagement, and friendships.
One issue we want to address is the focus of our subreddit. As we think about the future, we want to make sure that we keep our requests and focus on romance books primarily, since the purpose of the subreddit is to discuss books in the romance genre. To do this, we'll be creating an Erotica Requests weekly post, which will serve as a space for people requesting erotica and specific sex acts.
What is erotica?
To define erotica for our subreddit: A piece of fiction that focuses primarily on sex, where the plot is secondary and serves the sexual content within. Unlike in genre romances, in erotica a HEA/HFN is not required.
Some examples of this within the MM book community: Hedonist by Roe Horvat, HonoObey by DJ Heart, Taking the Knot by Sean Michael, Upending Tad by Kora Knight, and Knotted by the Wolf by Anna Wineheart.
A book having a lot of sex or having kink content does not make it inherently erotica -- what matters is whether the focus of the book is on the romantic relationship and getting to a HEA/HFN, or not. We realize the line may be blurry (especially with books labeled erotic romance) and we ask that people use their best judgment in the cases of recommendations.
What does it mean to make a request for a specific sex act?
"Request for specific sex act" means a request that can be read as "when the characters have sex, I want them to do X" and where that's the main thing the requester is asking for.
This would not include something like a general request that the book contain explicit sex, for example. It isn't meant to sweep in any request that mentions sex, just requests where the point is to find a specific type of sex scene.
Why make this change?
Our subreddit has always welcomed discussion and recommendation of erotica, kink, and taboo content. The purpose of the new post isn't to say that erotica content is "less than" romance or that it's unwanted here, but just to make it easier to know if you're requesting or recommending erotica (which, as mentioned above, doesn't always have a happy ending or feel like romance), since lots of book requests for romance wouldn't really be satisfied by an erotica recommendation, and vice versa.
Additionally, requests for specific sex acts come up pretty frequently, and many of them are so specific that there aren't many books that fit. A lot of these also wind up being repeats, and any time something is a repeat, people are less likely to reply to it. Putting these requests into their own weekly post where they don't have to be as specific or unique as a standalone request should help people to find what they're looking for, and will hopefully help people get more replies.
We're also hoping that having this new post will help people who are primarily interested in requesting and recommending erotica or specific sex acts know where to look. If you're an erotica-focused reader, a lot of the posts in the subreddit won't be what you're looking for, so you might not visit the subreddit as often and could miss some good stuff. With the new weekly post, you'll know exactly when to check the subreddit for the content that interests you.
This is similar to how we have scheduled posts for queer fiction and other MM media (though the Erotica Requests post will be weekly instead of monthly).
These changes do not mean that you can't recommend erotica, that kink romance books aren't allowed, or that this community is veering away from discussion of NSFW content. Instead, we are hoping this will create a curated space for erotica where erotica lovers can find the books they want, and will make it clearer when requests and recommendations are for erotica vs. genre romance.

New Weekly Post and New Rule

This change will be implemented in the form of a new rule (rule 11) and a new weekly post.

• Requests for erotica and specific sex acts (as defined above) will now need to be asked in the Thursday weekly post, Erotica Requests. Standalone requests for erotica and specific sex acts will be removed, and users will be directed to the Erotica Requests post instead.
  • Like in the Less Scary Request Place, requests made in the Erotica Requests post don't have to meet the specificity requirement of subreddit rule 2.
• Erotica and erotica recommendations are still welcome in response to Book Request posts, but please label your recommendation as such, so that people reading your comment know that the book falls into the erotica category and not the genre romance category.
  • We know that this might be hard to do and will be pretty subjective at times, so this portion of the rule will be gently enforced with reminders/questions to people about whether the book qualifies as erotica.
• This rule only affects Book Request posts (both the request itself and any replies). All other post types are unaffected, and you're welcome to keep posting about erotica books in places like the Weekly Roundup and all of our other scheduled posts, as well as any discussions posted by members (and discussion posts about erotica are still welcome as well).
• The mods will be paying close attention to how easy or hard this rule is for people to follow, so we can figure out if adjustments are needed. The goal is to help everyone know where to ask for and find specific types of books, not to punish people for miscategorizing things.
• Relatedly, we've updated Rule 2 to clarify that requests for strict top/bottom dynamics or that a particular character tops or bottoms do not qualify as specific request criteria. Some other element of the request has to satisfy rule 2. So requests for "extremely frequently requested thing, but please reassure me that my preferred character tops or bottoms" will now be removed. These requests can be made in the Less Scary Request Place or the Erotica Requests post instead.

The first Erotica Requests post will go up next Thursday, June 8.

I’m currently co-writing and proofreading a story. It’s a sort of suicide squad spin off, but with a happier ending.

There’s 6 MC’s , 3 women and 3 men of different ethnicities, races and sexualities. They’re all superhumans, who turned during a particle accelerator blast a few years back.
Three years later, two FBI agents decided to create a superhuman crime unit as a way of saving the city from rising chaos, due to two important vigilantes getting injured.
Every character has a unique backstory which adds to the plot later on. A child assassin, an ex-agent, a duo of female scientists, a regular college kid and a former fixer for the Japanese crime ring. Eventually, the characters who weren’t criminals found it easier to get money, revenge or power by using their newfound abilities.
The mafia isn’t very prominent in this story, or glamorized. Same goes for the child assassin’s backstory & “arc”. There’s some romance implemented, but it isnt the center of the story.
Each character has their own unique personality, and they find it hard to get along at first.
None of the things listed here are necessarily a spoiler, this is all explained in the first two episodes.
It includes a lot of custom character overlays, so we just thought CC would be pretty stupid?

Hi! I just purchased an Aquila X2 with H32 board the previous week. Simply loving it so far. I've already used half a kilo of PLA and no bad prints on stock, thanks to the information provided in this sub and the sticky post.
I have a question about proper bed leveling using the knobs with CR touch and Alex' firmware. So I'll start with that, and share my experience and tips with other new Aquila X2 H32 users further in this post.
Bed leveling question
I don't know if I'm correct, but CR touch feels like a correction for bed warping and improper manual bed leveling through the knobs. Therefore, proper manual bed leveling is still important, but you don't have to do this frequently anymore because CR touch can correct for this.
How can I manually realign my bed manually with the knobs in Alex' firmware? Cause I want to do that 'the stock way'. With stock, it would home using the Z-axis end stop sensor. From there, I just re-calibrate the bed using the A4 paper method. That way I can keep my the springs / silicone bed spacers in a proper and consistent working range. The Z-axis bed position is therefore referenced to the printer itself by the sensor. CR Touch can correct for further imperfections. But with Alex' firmware, homing the Z-axis would depend on the CR touch sensor and whatever improper calibration was done to the bed. There is no Z-axis reference to the printer itself.
I'm probably overthinking but sounds kinda logical to have this option. It's just that with the silicone spacers, they're designed for a certain working window where the bed is referenced to Z-axis end stop sensor. Otherwise, it would be a third thing to wonder about if it's too lose or too tight, just like the two belts.
Sharing my experience with other new Aquila X2 H32 users
Since everything went well, I've already bought and applied some upgrades after a week of usage. I noticed I needed to calibrate my bed after every print, so I bought the official Creality CR Touch module and silicone bed springs. On recommendation of this sub, I also bought the Creality metal extruder upgrade kit because this part seems to have a high failure rate. I picked the upgrade kit which also included the Capricorn bowden tube, since I want to print with other materials soon with higher temps.
Although the sticky post provided great information for the stock machine, it did lack some information about the upgrades everybody recommends here. At least in text form. I hate watching 15 minute YouTube videos for an answer that could be written in two sentences.
My first and only failed print was after replacing the bowden tube. It failed the PLA extrusion mid print. The tube was probably too long since both ends were cut perfectly round. The stock tube is 40 cm. My tube was cut at 50 cm with the idea to leave some spare to cut off when needed (e.g. the hot-end side of the tube). I had no problems anymore after cutting the tube length back to 40 cm.
When replacing the extruder, my tip would be not to tighten down the extruder gear attached the servo during the assembly process. This should be your last step so you can align the gear with the filament guiding bearing.
Another thing what bothered me is is firmware upgrade process. Yet another long YouTube video. The firmware upgrade is needed for the CR Touch upgrade. The official firmware for auto leveling (Aqulia X2 H32 BLtouch Firmware V5.3.3) sucks. Its unstable and freezed mid print. Therefore I switched to Alex firmware. Although not supported anymore, I love the stock Aquila X2 (non CBL Touch) firmware. Alex firmware is based on the source code of the latest official Aquila X2 H32 V5.1.8 firmware.
With the official Creality CR Touch upgrade, manual calibrate your printer bed and print a mount first before installing the upgrade. The included mounts are not compatible with the Aquila X2. I've printed this mount with X-axis tab. If you want to use the supplied bolts, use a M3 tap for the holes. You can also your own M3 bolts and nuts without a tap. Install the CR Touch upgrade. The CR Touch cable will fit easily through the bigger cable sleeve if you undo all tie-wraps. When accessing the H32 board, route and cable manage the cable around the board to not obstruct the fan.
I think it's good the know that lowest point of the CR Touch sensor lies higher than the nozzle. But the metal pin of the CR Touch will elongate itself when activated so you don't have to worry.
Here's a quick manual text written manual to flash Alex' firmware for tech-savvy users. If you need a step-by-step guide, please watch the videos. The mentioned downloads are the latest available versions. It will probably stay this way since these downloads are not supported by Alex anymore.

• Format a SD card as FAT32 with a cluster size of 4096 bytes.
• Download Alex' Marlin source code for the screen assets.
• In the source code archive, copy the Copy the DWIN_SET (Voxelab Red) folder to the root your formatted SD card. Rename the folder back to only DWIN_SET.
• Download Alex' Aquila X2 for H32 boards for the firmware upgrade. I've chosen BLTouch-5x5-H32.bin (BLTouch for auto bed leveling with the CR Touch upgrade, 5x5 for 25 measuring points, non high-speed HS).
• Create a folder on the SD card root named firmware and copy the download BIN file into that folder.
• Make sure your Aquila X2 is turned off, insert the prepared SD card into the printer base and turn the machine on.
• It will start to flash firmware immediately. If its booting into normal operation mode, your SD card is not prepared correctly. It will show a broken progress bar and come back alive after a short while. The screen might show mangled graphics when flashing is done.
• Turn off the machine to flash the display assets. Remove the SD card, disconnect and dismount the screen from the printer base.
• Unscrew the back cover from the screen to access a hidden SD card reader. You don't have to remove the mount from the display module. Insert the SD card, and reconnect the screen. It's better to not reassembly the whole thing at this point.
• Start your machine. If your SD card is prepared correctly, you will be greeted with a blue screen. When flashing the screen assets is done, the screen will flash orange.
• Turn off the machine, remove the SD card, and turn on the machine to verify the printer is working correctly. Reassembly if everything works fine.
• Do not reinsert the SD card into the printer. That will start a firmware upgrade again. Reformat it to your wishes, do not forget to return to the default cluster size.

After this your printer is ready to be calibrated with the CR Touch module. It's quite easy. I don't know it's significant or necessary, but I did preheat everything to account for thermal warping.

1. From the main menu, go to prepare.
2. Go to preheat.
3. Choose PLA.
4. Wait till everything is preheated.
5. From the main menu, go to leveling.
6. Check leveling active.
7. Go to create new mesh.
8. Choose confirm to save the mesh.

If there's a huge discrepancy between each measuring points, please level your bed using the knobs (and I have a question about that, see later this post). Open the mesh viewer to view this data.

1. From the main menu, go to leveling.
2. Go to mesh viewer.
3. Check viewer show values.
4. Go to mesh viewer.

I don't understand why people here are sometimes asking for Z-offset values. I think that's completely wrong to ask, right? This value is completly specific for each individual printer.

1. From the main menu, go to prepare.
2. Go to Z-offset.
3. Choose home Z-axis.
4. Check live adjustments.
5. Get a piece of typical 80 g/m² A4 paper and place it between the nozzle and bed.
6. Increase / decrease the Z-offset value. The perfect value is the value where there is some slight resistance moving the A4 paper. A microstep up would result in the A4 paper moving freely. Please note you have a few options to move the Z-axis. With microstep up, microstep down and setting a Z-offset value. Please note for the latter you have to push (confirm) the knob to apply the Z-offset value for live adjustments to work.

The next thing for me is PETG printing or OctoPrint. Thanks again for the resources!
