Anyone else still serving in a church but feeling completely burnt out?

2023.06.08 07:03 Codyh630 Anyone else still serving in a church but feeling completely burnt out?

I'll try to keep this fairly short, but this is something that has been weighing on me pretty heavily the past few days. A little backstory: I didn't grow up in an evangelical household by any means. My parents were more culturally Christian, and I would even put my dad as being somewhat skeptical. I went to Sunday school at the local Methodist church with my parents until I was around 6 or 7 and then I didn't start going to church again (other than occasional hardcore shows at churches) until the end of my senior year in high school, when I was invited by a girl I liked to come to a local youth group and made the decision to become a Christian. Being a musician, I almost immediately got involved playing guitar at various churches over the years. Despite this, I definitely had points I disagreed with the mainstream Evangelical church with; specifically regarding LGBTQ issues and the right to abortion. As I'm sure is the case with many in here, the 2016 election was a big catalyst for my own deconstruction.
Fast forward to the past year or so. I had still been serving and playing guitar at a local church most Sundays out of the year, in addition to working full time and running a home studio on the side. Around a year ago, I joined another hardcore band which has started playing shows fairly regularly and going on small weekend runs every few months or so. For the first time in years, I had to greatly scale back my availability at church. This started coming to a head a few weeks ago in regards to a Men's conference members of our church were attending. One night at rehearsal the worship leader at my church asked me if I was going to which I told him no since it was the one weekend in May that I didn't already have a show or a client in the studio. He started getting aggressive with me about how he told me about this event months in advance and I needed to be there because it was going to be life-changing for me. I'm by no means the most masculine man and I don't like being surrounded by people I don't really know, so spending a few days surrounded by hundreds of macho men sounded like an absolutely miserable experience. He brought it up again and, to his frustration, I again told him no. Fast forward a few weeks and I was telling another musician at rehearsal about the run of shows my band had booked for this summer. The worship leader pulled me aside and asked me if I had anyone in my life could tell me I was doing too much, to which I told him yes. He then proceeded to tell me that, in his words, I was "focusing on the wrong priorities in life" by playing shows with this band. His demeanor and aggression definitely struck me as off-putting.
The Monday before last, my entire friend group was left in a state of shock after our bassist had been found dead in his apartment. This was somebody who my wife and I had been close friends with for over a decade now, especially after performing with hin over the past year. I even took this past week off from serving just to have a chance to deal with the grief and attend funeral services. Despite sharing about his passing on various social media platforms and notating in Planning Center that I needed this past weekend off to deal with grief, not a single member of leadership at a church that my wife and I have been serving at almost every weekend for just under 7 years now reached out to talk to us or even to check up on is. Honestly, I'm at a loss currently. I'm back on the schedule this Sunday; but I just have no desire to serve.
Sorry for the long post. Has anyone else been in a similar situation? Would it be best for me to take some time away from church?
Thank you!

Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has labeled Moms for Liberty and other "parental rights" groups as extremist entities.
The SPLC report: The civil rights organization's annual Year in Hate & Extremism report highlights Moms for Liberty and similar groups as pushing an anti-student inclusion agenda. * SPLC compares these modern organizations to pro-segregationist parent groups from the past. * Rachel Carroll Rivas, deputy director for research at the SPLC, notes concerns about the sudden appearance and tactics of Moms for Liberty activists in schools.
Moms for Liberty origins: Founded in early 2021 by conservative women in Florida, the group has quickly expanded nationwide. * The organization successfully campaigned against COVID safety measures in schools, book bans, and limiting discussion about race and LGBTQ identities. * Co-founders Tina Descovich and Tiffany Justice have defended their organization, stating that they are "devoted to empowering parents to be a part of their child's public school education."
Growing political clout: Moms for Liberty's annual conference in Philadelphia will feature three leading Republican presidential candidates as speakers. * These include former President Donald Trump, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.

2023.06.07 23:57 BasketballSim The Warriors could very well win the championship in their next game

The result for Game 5 was unexpected because the Celtics were -8.5 ahead of the game, and still went on to lose at home. The Warriors hold the 3-2 series lead heading back to Chase Center. With the momentum and everything, they could very likely beat the Celtics at Chase Center and celebrate the 2023 NBS championship. It will be quite a weird moment considering they were a second-round exit in the NBA this season. However, the Denver Nuggets are in a tied NBA Finals series right now, and did y'all remember that they were swept out of the NBS first round? Talk about weird! That's what makes sports cool. The intensity, the suspense... all that!
Yet, it's not time to count the Celtics out. They still have a chance to beat the Warriors. Remember in the NBA's Conference Semifinals this year? The Celtics were down 2-3 heading to the 76ers' home court, with the 76ers having the advantage. However, Boston still went on to win Game 6 and took Game 7 at home! So, it's not impossible for the Celtics to win this championship. Who knows which team is gonna win? It's really hard to tell at this point.
The Celtics are -1.5 for Game 6, and for every game of the series, the Warriors were never favored to win, according to BasketballGM's pregame spread.
It's really important for us to know that this is going to be a really crucial moment for this league. The Warriors winning in 2023 would give them a three-peat and a dynasty, and though it would not destroy the league in terms of watchability, it would cause the competition to drop. Yet, the Warriors' future is in serious doubt, so who knows? Maybe they should get the chance to win their 3rd straight title before this Curry era ends.

2023.06.07 22:19 Niznack The Advent Home and a discussion of Adventist psychology

Advent Home
trigger warnings
rape, suicide, physical abuse, emotional abuse.

chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/WEST-VIRGINIA.pdf
note: Several organizations share a name with the Advent Home. I am specifically referring to the now defunct group home near Calhoun, Tennessee.
We talk a lot today about trauma in a way I don't remember it being discussed even in the broader cultural consciousness when I was young. Mental health was just viewed differently. Adventists have always had a weird relationship with mental health, but I think rarely more strange and harmful than the ideas of Dr. Senior and the Advent home. Through most of this I will use fake names but as Dr. Senior's name is intrinsically and publicly tied to the school he is my one exception. Also, if any reading this had the misfortune of also attending the school, you will know we were told to call him Dr. B or Dr. Blondel but we are adults and his title was Dr. Senior.
I've wanted to write about this for some time and this will likely be a first draft of a larger discussion. Psychology isn't my field of expertise and I've never felt I found the right platform to talk about such a niche subject but finding the Ex Adventist sub and with more being said about mental health I at least feel qualified to discuss where I feel Adventism was used to twist psychology into something harmful by Dr. Senior.
Before I continue, I wasn't there for the worst of what was to happen nor did I receive the worst of what happened in my time there. I also cannot entirely claim innocence of some of the emotional bullying that was tolerated if not encouraged. I hope I have grown since then and have learned from mistakes I made when I was 13 and do believe I am largely innocent of the physical bullying and certainly the sexual assault.
First, I want to address the lawsuit. As I say, I wasn't there for most of this as by 2014 the Advent Home and Miracle Meadows seem to have become much more closely related, swapping students to hide them from law enforcement and deposition. The school closed around 2014 , the time a lawsuit was filed. More lawsuits have since been filed and the director of the sister school miracle meadows was imprisoned. I will link the lawsuit and articles above. As the events detailed in it represent a massive escalation from what was happening while I was there, but I do think the events described are merely the codification of the policies being unofficially implemented on a smaller scale in my time. In short it lays out regular forced sexual assault by students and staff, duct taping students in rooms for days if they were violent and forcing them to study the bible for days at a time as punishment. Thinking back, I can see how the deference to authority and refusal to treat mental health as anything other than a religious failing could lead to the behavior detailed in these allegations. To be clear I am linking the allegation and articles below though I wasn't part of any of these trials and don't know which charges exactly stuck.
Even though the school is closed and from what I can tell Dr. Senior is retired, I think there is a larger discussion to be had about how the Adventist Church handles mental health and firebrands. So, what was the Advent Home? The Advent Home was a young men's reform school begun by Dr. Blondel Senior in Calhoun, Tennessee. There isn't much left to find on it as it shut down around 2014 and never had a great online presence. I suspect a lawsuit around the same time was to blame, as, if any of its allegations were proven, it would have cost the advent home, Dr Senior, and the conference a lot of money and embarrassment. More on this later.
The Advent Home advertised a range of services from treating ADHD and general misbehavior to serious developmental disorders and outright criminals. Basicall, he wanted it to be everything from a more structured middle school to a juvenile detention center, and predictably, it would fail at both.
I don't know how my mom found out about the Advent Home, but I know her reasons for sending me. A nasty divorce between my parents caused me to lose interest in schoo, so I barely passed 8th grade, and I had started listening to Eminem. That's it. it seems so laughably tame but that's all it took for Dr. Senior to be able to convince my mom that this behavior would escalate and the only recourse was his school which was built on and advertised correction through a strict adherence to Adventist principles. Every student came with fundamentally different problems. Some, like me were struggling scholastically while several had been ordered there by courts for violent offenses and several had what I cannot give another name other than a complete stall in mental development (one student thought and acted like a toddler, mentally and emotionally well below his age).
We were all, however, given the same treatment regimen, Maturation Therapy. This I will argue is the root of the problem. Dr. Senior claimed to have gotten his PHD in psychology from the University of Jamaica. I am not going to cast aspersions on this institution, but if he did have this degree he missed some crucial lessons and did not keep up on developments in the field. Dr. Senior had identified 70 ideals he believed every young man should emulate as he matures. I could not possibly list them, but they ranged from keeping a clean room, respect for staff to whether you used harsh language to how often you prayed. These would have made for fine rules for a religious correctional facility, but this was the entire treatment plan. Each of the 70 points would have you ranked 1-5, and you graduated by achieving a 4.5 average. 230 points overall. An important note here is all of these points were external. There was no mention of healing trauma or discussion of past actions. We were seen as immature children and by forcing mature behavior our other issues would right themselves. Right? In short, Dr. Seniors idea of therapy was entirely about becoming presentable, respect for authority, and respect for God. I want to go through these because in each I see a failing not only of the school but Adventism's handling of mental health in general. Also while I cannot speak to the lawsuit I will be linking it below as I believe sexual assault survivors and I want to say what these points contribute to how this environment may have developed.
His entire idea of personal growth was based on becoming outwardly his idea of a respectable man. He was willing to cross any number of boundaries violating others' religious taboos, disregarding the desires of the parents and showing no interest in the students as individuals. We were broken and needed only to be put in his mold and recast. One student was Rastafarian and his father wrote a letter explaining their faith and why he shouldn't cut his hair. His father had barely left town when the boy was forced to get his hair shorn off. Our 'civilian' clothes were confiscated on arrival and sorted for how appropriate he felt they were. Anything he didn't like we would get back when we left. I never did. As for speech we were strictly regulated on what words we could say. Cuss words, and even adjacent words like darn, would result in a loss of points and thus longer before we would be able to go home. Instead of psychological healing, his priority was always to make us look healed on the outside.
The most egregious example of this was a boy I will call Zach. Zach had a severe developmental disorder that in my opinion Dr. Senior was woefully ill-equipped to treat but that never dulled his confidence. Because of his neurodivergence Zach was habitually unpresentable. Zach would frequently have food dripped down his shirt, throw temper tantrums in public areas and speak loudly about bodily functions that would have been amusing from a four year old but Zach was almost 14 and just beginning puberty if you get my meaning. At every turn, Zach was not met with treatment but ridicule. To the Advent Home staff, he wasn't sick, he was misbehaved and punished severely for it. We all had to run up to 3 laps of 1/3 of a mile as discipline regularly, but Zach's condition often racked him up more laps than could be humanly run. at one point, a new staff member refused to allow Zach to eat at all until he completed a number of laps I doubt would be humanly possible, let alone for a confused neurodivergent. One of the proudest moments of my life is that I stood up for Zach and pointed out, whatever punishment was meted out, food was an illegal method of punishment in the state. My shame, however, is how often I joined in the ridicule and bullying of Zach when the staff made punishments for his misbehavior punishments for all of us. As I say, I hope I have grown.
Dr. Senior saw scruffiness and cultural differences very much the way the Dursleys from Harry Potter did. These were not the markers of young men expressing themselves or of cultural differences but of moral failings to be stamped out or hidden until they faded into normalcy. We didn't need to discover ourselves, we needed to learn the joy of conformity
The real problems would come with his reliance on authoritative structures. Both the staff and students had clear hierarchies within them. New students would be Group Members, GM, while you could be promoted to Assistant Group Leader, AGL, a Group Leader, GL, with a possible Super Group Leader SGL at the top All leaders had the authority to report misbehavior and physically restrain violent students. Here, we start to see the problems. What constituted violent behavior was entirely up to the authority figure, and unless there were witnesses who ranked equally, Dr. Senior would implicitly believe the higher ranked individual. Keep in mind that some of these kids had real criminal records, and as I've established, we were not getting our problems treated.
I want to use one student as an example. I'll give him a fake name (James) as I hope he's reformed and also should not be judged entirely on his actions when he was 16 but these are actions I either witnessed or saw the fall out of so believer their veracity. I was walking by him one day. he had been given a job he didn't want to do. Instead, he was sitting talking to a group he bullied but passed for his friends. He called out to me to do the job for him. I laughed and kept walking. he took offense and deciding I had disrespected him, chased me down, hit me, tackled me into the gravel road, and held me there until I begged to be released. Those words; I beg you to release me. I was cut, bruised, crying and bleeding. James was unharmed, but when I told Dr. Senior, he believed James because he was a group leader and I a lowly Group member.
One of the students who had been sitting on the steps with James, who I will call Sam, would get caught performing oral sex on James only a few months later. James assured Dr. Senior Sam had asked practically begged to do it, and here again, James authority had him taken at this word. They both received punishment, but Sam got the lion's share as he had initiated and must be gay. I firmly believe James pressured Sam into this, and likely not just this once.
Dr. Senior said the word "manipulative" more than anyone i have ever known. often as we lowly students tried to explain actions or avoid discipline for petty offences, he would accuse us of manipulating. In hindsight, this is how he viewed the relationship between those with power and those without. There were those the system had put in power and those below who now would try to manipulate those who had the power. from the bottom of the ladder, he was incapable of seeing sincerity or pain. only manipulation. To be clear, I don't know how much of the reality reached Dr. Senior's ears, but enough had to he had to be actively ignoring warning signs in favor of authority. I talk about this to show how Dr. Senior felt strongly that respect for authority was essential regardless how abusive the authority figure might be. Hold on to that too.
The final point is religion. It should not need said, but Dr. Senior wanted all of us studying the bible and practicing a very conservative faith even for SDA. This is fine(ish), but he also believed that Christ had predictable healing powers and that mental health was only a failing of the individual to have the faith necessary for healing.
We were all encouraged to discontinue any medications we might be taking. For me, with ADHD and Ritalin this was probably fine, but for one student with borderline schizophrenia this led to several violent episodes he was blamed for despite the staff convincing him to get off his meds. A diabetic student was eventually pulled from the program after his 4th hospitalization when he was allowed to opt out of his insulin/ blood sugar checker. Christ, as a placebo alongside medicine, is silly but fine, but as a replacement for lifesaving drugs, it can have dangerous consequences, and Dr. Senior refused to see this. In Dr Senior's mind, I believe, these boys weren't sick, they were failing to let Jesus in to heal them and that's what needed to change.
Furthermore, behavioral incidents were often met with explicitly Christiaan remedies. Issues of bullying and cursing would require not time out but a scripture reading. sometimes alone sometimes publicly, along with a public admission of what we did. This was done at a weekly meeting when Dr. Senior came down from his literal house on the hill to play mediator and in no metaphorical sense moral arbiter of our actions. in essence, he got to play God for 2 hours a week.
The most heinous example of the use of religion however was, Mr. V who I believe saw jail time. This man was a thousand walking red flags. He went to boys' rooms to pray alone, and he insisted on a separate bible study with a group of boys he was particularly close to. Outwardly, however, he was fanatically religious, and this was enough to assuage Dr. Senior of concerns. Mr. V was the guy who when the pastor said kneel for prayer he would stand with his arms to heaven, when the pastor asked for a moment of silent reflection he would exclaim AMEN! every five seconds, He played moral police intervening in behavioral issues after considering a matter settled if a student agreed to a private prayer session (yup, nothing sus here). Dr, Senior employed and sung the praises of Mr. V's work even as this concerning behavior began to escalate to the point that some students, formerly in his inner circle, began to actively distance themselves from him but were unwilling to discuss why.
Dr. Senior could not, however, ignore when Mr. V took a kid off campus without telling anyone to a small mountain cabin to "diet" for three days. Only once the police were involved could Mr. V. 's behavior no longer be ignored and his religious authority be given priority. If you are wondering Mr. V gets a fake name because, while I am telling the truth to the best of my knowledge, we were never told the full story. The student in question was withdrawn before he was willing to talk about it, and Mr. V was not seen again. I don't know what he was charged with or what stuck but I think we can put the pieces together.
Fortunately, other than some more bullying and getting through a nasty flu with nothing more than pepper water as medicine, I graduated. Yeah, shocker, he also didn't like doctors. The shock of seeing how normal people practiced Adventism after a year of this cult like fanaticism has a lot to do with why I'm on this sub and not the SDA sub, but I got off easy. For the criminals and really troubled kids recidivism was high, with several being in a proper prison weeks or months after. Several would turn around and be back at the Advent Home in months because the behavior never stopped, they just learned to act like it did. But the real harm was a boy I'll call Dan. He had depression when he arrived, it was never treated but pushed down. He pushed it down so far he became the best of us. he was very nice and a bit of a mentor to me. he worked hard and became SGL (the highest one remember) with one of the highest scores that an Advent home graduate had had. One year after leaving the school, he committed suicide by diving into an empty pool. Only then, did I realize he wasn't fine. He was never fine. He had mastered acting fine. The furthest I got in Psychology was a single college course and some youtubers (and the small bit of real therapy I've had) but even with this, I can see how Dr. Senior was out of step with the psychological practices even of the early 2000s. He was so much more focused on appearance and behavior than he was ever interested in the root cause, his system often became a new trauma rather than treating an old one. An excessive respect for authority led to abusive behavior being overlooked if not encouraged, and Jesus was treated in a professional setting as a supreme healer despite real medical issues. I saw these issues in the church I left, and my mom and extended family still practice in. This is why I really feel compelled to write this. People like Dr. Senior may seem like an Adventist version of Godwin's law. "Oh, yeah? If we can look at Jesus to heal, it'll end up like the Advent Home!" (Or Miracle Meadows) I know this sentence has never been uttered by anyone but me and maybe Sam, hope you're ok buddy, but the fact is Dr. Senior is the end stage of the ideas put into their most harmful practice, and some like Dan paid with their life.
Finally, through all of this, I remember how Dr. Senior was treated by outsiders. Entire churches prayed for his good work to continue, meetings were held for him to teach others to copy his program, he was featured multiple times in the herald and other Adventist publications. Like Mr. V his religiosity was a shield despite all the red flags, and like Mr. V he was given the respect and admiration that came with his position all the way up until there were consequences. It isn't that no one could see there were problems. He flew his red flags high. Its that the church didn't want to see the problem and didn't care until the outside world took action.
Please, if you take anything from this, look out for your SDA relatives who struggle with mental health. The church sure won't. But on a larger note, I hope this to be part of a larger discussion about bringing awareness to the churches failing on mental health and how they overlook monsters in their ranks who just haven't embarrassed them yet. Dr. Senior never sexually assaulted a kid as far as I'm aware, but he enabled and protected abusers in service of pushing his ideology all while the church sang his praises. Disclaimer: At no point in this do I feel I deliberately lied or exaggerated, but these are 20 year old memories of a traumatized 13 year old who was never given the full story. I tried to leave hearsay out, but I did find out what happened to Dan through the grapevine, though from someone I believe completely. If there are minor inaccuracies, I do apologize, but I believe I have been accurate in the larger points.
Names are changed for obvious reasons, though my change style switched cause I am bad at coming up with names when stressed, my D&D group will confirm, and this is stressful to write about even now.
The Advent Home I attended is shut and a very attractive hotel now. My research showed he partnered closely with miracle meadows, which is also now shut. If by chance Dr. Senior is still practicing somewhere, or has appointed a successor, please persuade family to look closely and critically at his practices before signing anything. He used to complain kids were manipulative but, as with all projectors, he was the master manipulator. He convinced people to consent to incredible things. I believe everyone can change if they want and as far as I know he had the education to do good work. Instead, he chose to ignore that education in service of his biases. Unless he has updated his treatment, please at the very least accompany his work with another well regarded psychologist.

WHAT a great flurry of action, great team Defense by WC all blocking shots! if this is what the rest of the game will be like i will be very happy hahaha, (WC 27) subs off for (WC 119) to enter the game
Highlights:~3' WC Miss: (WC 456) takes a corner kick quickly and kicks a back pass to (WC 23) who takes a shot on net that is deflected by (FM 30), the ball goes up but (FM 10- GK) tracks the ball well and catches it

Highlights:~5' FM Miss: (FM 30) kicks the ball forward with a small lob, a perfect dump and chase pass that (FM 77) chases and (WC 01- GK) comes off her goal line to contest, (FM 77) manages to get her toe on the ball before (WC 01- GK) can get to the ball, however, the re-direction is wide by a foot to the left side of the net, all the coaches in the stands are stating how great a forward pass that (FM 30) kicked, WC are still playing too much in their end, they need to get their passing game going
Highlights:~6' WC Miss: (FM 30) takes a sideline kick-in from deep in FM territory and kicks the ball towards WC net, (WC 01- GK) comes off her goal line and kicks a short forward pass to (WC 23) who traps the ball and turns around and kicks a cross pass to center circle where (WC 452) receives the ball, it's a one-on-one with (WC 452) vs (FM 99), (WC 452) dribbles hard down the right wing side evading the bumps and checks by (FM 99), (WC 452) takes a power shot on target aimed bottom middle that (FM 10- GK) manages to block with her knees and the ball goes out of bounds to the sidelines

Highlights:~6' WC FOUL: (WC 119) goes for a hard slide tackle that takes down (FM 88) hard, VAR is called after refs issued a yellow card, they are determining if this is a RED card offense, (FM 88) is holding her back the foul is changed to a RED CARD, Coach EulYong is now furious that his team will be short-handed, a direct free-kick in a great spot AND 3 minutes of 4v3 for FM
Highlights:~7' FM Miss: (FM 77) takes the direct free-kick with a shot on net that is aimed for the left middle post area, (WC 01- GK) tracks it down but lays off it but it HITS THE POST and deflects towards the sidelines, for a WC kick in
Highlights:~8' FM Miss: (FM 30) takes a sideline kick-in from deep in FM territory with a short pass down the wing for (FM 77) who traps the ball and back passes to (FM 30), WC defense forgot that (FM 88) was on the field all alone in WC territory, and (FM 30) kicks a beauty forward pass to (FM 88) who traps the ball, keeps control, turns around and sets up for a shot on net, (FM 88) takes a shot on target aimed for the near left side but it HITS THE POST and comes back into the field of play that (WC 456) clears out of bounds to the sidelines, what a glorious chance missed, great sequence of skills, but no ball in the net, upon the many replays, (WC 01- GK) gets her hand on the ball and actually gets the save, i thought it was a direct shot that hit the post
Highlights:~8' FM Miss: (FM 30) takes a sideline kick-in from WC corner area with a rolling cross to the middle that (FM 99) takes a one-time speedy bouncy ball aimed for the near side bottom left corner that (WC 01- GK) blocks, the ball goes out of bounds for a corner kick
Highlights:~8' FM Miss: (FM 30) takes a corner kick with a flick kick that sends the ball lobbing in the air and dropping to the goal mouth area, (FM 88) misses a re-direction chance and the ball drops and is trapped by her but she doesn't have control, she manages to track down the ball and kicks the ball behind her and it manages to get to (FM 77) who takes a shot on target that is aimed for the middle right area that (WC 01- GK) blocks for another corner kick
Highlights:~9' WC back to 4 on the field: the ref calls for (WC 119) re-enter the game as the three minute for the RED Card elapses, thirty seconds left in the first half
HALFTIME SCORE LINE: ------- WC 1 - 0 FM------------, looks like Elody has worked on her touch, it is a lot softer now and with more control. Great effort by both teams, looks like FM aren't getting their lucky breaks even though they have their chances
Highlights:~11' FM Miss: (FM 88) strips the ball from (WC 23) who didn't have full control after trapping a lobbed ball, (FM 88) then kicks a forward cross pass to the right wing side where (FM 77) is running, (FM 77) takes a one-time shot aimed for the near side bottom right corner but (WC 01- GK) smothers the ball
Highlights:~12' WC Miss: (WC 119) takes a sideline kick-in with a power shot on target (not a goal if it went in, since there was no other contact on the ball), (FM 10- GK) blocks the ball and it drops in front of her and she catches it
Highlights:~12' WC Miss: (FM 10- GK) throws a forward pass but (WC 452) sticks her leg out and her toe get a piece of the ball, (WC 452) cuts to the middle and kicks an outlet pass to the left wing for (WC 456) who then dribbles forward and takes a shot on target aimed for the near side bottom left corner that misses the net by a foot, (FM 10- GK) was in position to block the ball
Highlights:~13' WC Miss: (WC 452) kicks a forward pass to the left wing for an unmarked (WC 456) who manages to gain control of the ball near the sidelines, she dribbles forward towards the corner and takes a shot on target that is a bad angle shot and (FM 10- GK) blocks with her knees and the ball goes out of bounds for a corner kick
Highlights:~13' WC Miss: (WC 456) takes the corner kick with a mid height cross near the top of 10yard box where (WC 119) manages to get her head on but not enough re-direction towards the net that the ball misses the target by a wide margin and goes out of bounds for a goal kick, time is ticking away and WC is the team mostly on offense
Highlights:~14' WC Miss: (WC 456) takes the corner kick that is blocked by (FM 30), (FM 30) kicks a forward pass to the center circle area that (FM 88) traps and dribbles towards the right wing side beating the stifling "handsy" defense of (WC 23), (FM 88) gets to the 10 yard box area and manages to take a power shot on target aimed straight at (WC 01- GK) who easily catches and holds on to the ball
Highlights:~14' WC GOAL: (FM 10- GK) rolls a pass to (FM 30) to the right wing side (WC 456) attacks with pressure and (FM 30) kicks a weak cross towards the middle that isn't going to anyone, (WC 452) tracks down the ball and takes a shot on target, but the shot is blocked by (FM 10- GK) who comes off her line and cuts the angles down, but the shot is deflected to (WC 452) who manages to take another shot on net that (FM 30) tries to block but ends up in the net, poor pass by (FM 30) that resulted in a counterattack that WC totally capitalized on, FM's spirits look down, Coach JJJ needs to call a time-out
Highlights:~16' FM Miss: (FM 88) kicks a cross pass that (FM 77) one-times on target but from distance that (WC 01- GK) easily saves
Highlights:~17' WC Miss: (WC 452) strips the ball from (FM 99) and kicks a long cross pass that nutmegs (goes through the legs of) (FM 30) and gets to (WC 456) who one-time shoots it on target aimed for the near side bottom right corner. (FM 10- GK) comes up huge with a block that bounces out of bounds for a corner kick, (WC 23) subs off for (WC 27) to enter the game, (FM 88) subs off for (FM 20) to enter the game
Highlights:~18' FM Miss: (FM 77) takes a sideline kick-in with a shot on target that (WC 01- GK) blocks, the rebound drops to the front goal mouth area that (FM 30) takes a one-time volley shot on target that (WC 01- GK) smothers, what a great save, FM not getting any finish on their shots on target, (WC 27) subs off for (WC 23) to enter the game
Highlights:~18' FM Miss: (FM 30) takes a corner kick-in with a high lobbing flick shot that drops towards the WC goal mouth area that everyone manages to miss a touch before it hits the ground, the ball bounces high and (FM 20) touched the ball with her arms that were in the air
Highlights:~19' WC Miss: (WC 119) takes a power bullet shot from centerline aimed for the net that (FM 10- GK) manages to track and smother, there was some serious power in that shot
FINAL SCORE LINE: ------- WC 2 - 0 FM------------, WC finally enter the Gold medal game with a great team effort, their passing may have been lacking but they did well, Elody comes up big with some hustle moments and soft touches, I am happy WC finally get their shot at Gold, their team defensive effort to keep the ball out of the net from FM's first strong attack was insane, everyone was ready to get in the way of the ball, true desperation, true grittiness from all WC women. FM had great chances but luck was not on their side for bounces.
PREVIEWS: GT v FM, battle for the bronze medal, PSY and HyunYi play to win. KyungHee coming up big with some skill moves, why are the ladies crying at the end? did someone get seriously hurt? NOOOO!

2023.06.07 19:33 autotldr Air Force official: Military families ‘forced to move’ over anti-LGBTQ bullying

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 26%. (I'm a bot)
An Air Force official said that troops who have LGBTQ+ members in their families are being forced to move to new bases due to anti-LGBTQ bullying happening at schools.
Speaking at the Center for a New American Security's annual National Security Conference, Assistant Air Force Secretary for Manpower and Reserve Affairs Alex Wagner said he's worried about being forced to move families from bases due to their LGBTQ children experiencing bullying and harassment in schools.
Wagner said the ongoing issue is "Distracting from their mission, that's detracting from our readiness."
Wagner also said diversity and inclusion are "Core" to U.S. national security, noting that diverse groups always outperform "Carefully selected teams of homogenous individuals."
Senators unveil bipartisan legislation targeting spread of invasive spotted lanternfly China's belligerence in Taiwan Strait poses new challenge to US. "What I need, managing the Department of the Air Force's personnel enterprise, is a diverse force that thinks about how to approach the hardest, toughest, most challenging national security issues, challenging issues period that this country faces, bringing them together with a single focus with a single mission," Wagner added.
Wagner's comments come as the country has seen a recent wave of GOP-led state legislatures passing laws that target the LGBTQ community, from limits in the classroom to bans on drag shows to prohibition of gender-affirming care for transgender minors.

2023.06.07 18:33 Gr33nJ0k3r13 Wilo Observer

On this glorious sunny day the mayor of wilo cut the ribbon seperating 40.000 people from the rest of the world. From now on international travellers will have the option to fly into wilo beyond the speed of sound. The new airport is not just a one time deal, along with it comes a pilot project providing the city of wilo with new found capabilitys and a new field of study. Suplementary DHL has offered to integrate a remote managing tool aided by ai, this makes it possible to clear the path of a package before it even gets sent. Part of the package is the deployment of a small military air wing exercising and monitoring the airspace, in case of any unknown agression a f22 fighter jet could be deployed to act within the space of minutes. In the time without enemy contact this air wing regularly conducts super sonic test flights and experiments providing a live testing capability to the super sonic research center including the university of wilo. „This base provides a vital arm for our crisis management if demanded we could send multiple helicopters over international waters conducting search operations long before any ship could reach them“ - Colonel Sanders said at the opening press conference, after a blockupy activist was forcefully removed from his chair. This project is controversial as just days after its anouncement small protest occurred all over the city of wilo including banners that read „no nukes for wilo“; „we don‘t want a target on our backs“; „super sonic = ecological exitus“; „super sonic booms bring back my ptsd“ ; „a conquorde evo2 burnes fuel 200 times faster than it can be pumped to the surface stop the waste!“. At last: Your personal plane could be standing right next to this f22! Book your timeslot today and come to wilo! (Note: subsonic aviation will be scheduled after supersonic aviation)

2023.06.07 18:09 IC2MSP Flint selected as host city for national talent attraction conference

Hey all! I'm new to the Flint subreddit, but the company I work for does business in the city so I'm really excited to learn more about the region. Just read this article in the Flint Journal about a new talent attraction summit coming to the city this weekend.
Sounds pretty cool and out of the box compared to other conferences I've been to that normally just center themselves in a hotel conference center.
The company putting on the conference with the Flint & Genesee Group also recently launched the "Make Your Move in Flint & Genesee," a campaign to attract new residents to the region.

2023.06.07 17:56 uggsandstarbux Defending the Draft 2023: Minnesota Vikings

Link to Hub

Recapping 2022

2022 was a dangerous year to be a Vikings fan, especially if you have a pre-existing heart condition. While a season of 13 wins -- tied for the most since 1998 -- may seem like the team is in a position to make a Superbowl push, the actual quality of the team is a lot more... well, mediocre.
The 2022 Vikings ranked 19th in offensive EPA per play, 25th in defensive EPA per play, 27th in Overall DVOA, and 15th in Pythagorean Wins (with 8.4 expected wins). Kevin O'Connell always preached the performance of the team in priority situations. The team finished 12th in 3rd down conversion rate and 8th in red zone conversion rate. And the team led the league -- by far -- in the number of 4th quarter comebacks and game winning drives. When it was time to put up or shut up, the team put up hard. Except for in the playoffs.

2023 Offseason

All of that made the future of the Vikings tough to read. But Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and the rest of the front office told us what they thought of the team with their free agency moves. In a league where teams are trading the farm for Hall of Fame QBs and giving $20M/Year deals to nose tackles and guards, the Vikings' big free agent splash were a one year deal on an injury-prone DE and a good-not-great corner that doesn't even crack the top 20 highest AAVs at the position. Concurrently, the team parted ways with half of the team's 2022 captains to try to get under the cap. All of this while the team is not done with transactions -- Dalvin Cook still presents as a cut candidate due to his age and contract structure.
Notable Departures:
Notable Arrivals:
Other Notable Transactions:
The other major change that influenced how the team addresses the draft was the shift from Ed Donatell's Cover 2 shell defense to Brian Flores's aggressive man defense. Compared to the 2022 Vikings, Flores's 2021 Dolphins blitzed over twice as often and played with light boxes at roughly half the rate. On top of the front seven, one of the biggest changes in scheme is the Cover 2 alignment, which Donatell employed on nearly half of all defensive snaps compared to just 12% for Flores's 2021 Miami team. With one crop of rookies and free agents brought in to play in a Fangio style scheme, the defense would have to undergo a massive shift to succeed in a scheme that can only be described as the complete opposite of what was run in 2022.

Draft Needs

Cornerback - Arguably the Vikings' biggest need, the team was without a true CB1. Byron Murphy comes aboard as the most experienced player. Pegged a slot-only player through his first three years, Murphy spent most of his time in 2022 outside and had a career year. After that, the team looked to rely on improvements from their 2022 draft class with Andrew Booth and Akayleb Evans, two players that combined for fewer than 300 defensive snaps last season primarily due to injury. You can see how KAM and crew, confident in their scouting ability, are betting on health to affect the secondary for the better. But taking another bet on a young player is a smart move at a position where depth is always a good thing.
Interior Defensive Line - The loss of Dalvin Tomlinson -- who played 551 snaps last year and compiled 14 pressures -- leaves issues next to Harrison Phillips. Jonathan Bullard was third on the IDL with 319 snaps last season and returns on a one year deal. Tonga and Lynch had some flashes, and the team brought in Lowry. The rotation (optimistically) can get to competent. But finding a true winner on the inside of the line was viewed by many as a priority.
Wide Receiver - The Vikings starting personnel at WR heading in to the draft was Justin Jefferson (stud), KJ Osborn (decent), and... Jalen Nailor? Brandon Powell? Oh dear Lord don't tell me it's Jalen Reagor. The loss of Adam Thielen was expected, but nevertheless leaves a gaping hole next to JJ and KJ in the lineup. Keenan McCardell is arguably the best WR coach in the league, and playing with Jefferson would give one-on-one opportunities for any receiver. But having somebody that can actually win those one-on-ones remains a question.
Inside Linebacker - Eric Kendricks's jersey change marks the true end of an era at LB. Kendricks struggled in Donatell's scheme last season, as did most players. But he was a longtime leader on the defense and a valued community member. Jordan Hicks, Brian Asamoah, and Troy Reeder sit atop the depth chart. Hicks can be solid and Asamoah had flashes, but counting on this group as every down players is a risk to say the least.
Offensive Guard - Ed Ingram was one of the worst starting guards in the league last season. But he's a rookie. Maybe he gets better in year 2. Maybe he stays terrible. Even if you're optimistic there, Ezra Cleveland is entering a contract year at left guard. Adding interior offensive line depth is always smart.
Quarterback - This offseason, reports surfaced that the team and QB Kirk Cousins could not finalize a contract extension. That means for the first time in his Vikings tenure, Cousins is entering a contract year. Cousins has been an above average QB during his time in Minnesota. Last year saw him finish 4th in yards, but he was painfully mediocre at efficiency stats like TD percent (17th), ANY/A (18th), and ADOT (20th). Entering his age-35 season, it would be wise to look for a successor even if the team plans on retaining Cousins past 2023.

Steve Smith Sr: "Addison has one of the highest ceilings among WRs in this draft due to his blend of route running chops and his all around athleticism. He is a three level route runner: intermediate, deep, and short... The way he can get in and out of his breaks is so natural. He uses leverage. And he manipulates the DB consistently"
Addison -- a Biletnikoff Award winner during his Pitt days -- is one of the highest floor players in the class. He is a route running technician with proven dominance playing inside and outside. He had more than 3 yards per route run in two different offenses. He understands how to marry his athleticism and quickness with the breaks in his routes. He finds the DB's blind spot and forces them to lose. Addison is a bit on the small side, but not abnormally so given this draft class. He does have some concerns with his hands -- his drop rates as a freshman and sophomore were 14% and 10%, respectively -- but he showed improvement in this as a junior.
The need here is clear. As mentioned earlier, the WR depth past JJ and KJ is abysmal. Even with Thielen and Osborn on the roster in 2022, the Vikings needed juice in the WR room. The 2022 Vikings had one top 5 WR in yards per route run (Jefferson). There was no other receiver in the top 100. Teams were not worried about Thielen or Osborn. Teams could put two or three defenders on Jefferson without any fear of what anyone else might do to their defense. Hockenson fixed this a bit down the stretch, but an outside playmaker was still needed.
The real question here is why the team opted not to go for CB Joey Porter Jr, who filled what many considered to be the team's biggest need and was a higher ranked prospect for Lance Zierlein, PFF, Danny Kelly, Matt Miller, and Dane Brugler. The answer here -- if I can take a guess and stretch my logic a bit -- is that the need at WR2 was greater than the need at CB. Patrick Peterson was the biggest loss in the secondary, and the team brought in Byron Murphy to try to fill that role. On offense, Minnesota had not brought in a replacement for Adam Thielen. The depth chart past Jefferson and Osborn was filled with bodies that might not make a 53-man roster on a lot of teams.

The biggest thing to consider when evaluating this trade is that the Vikings came into the draft with 5 picks, only two of which were in the top 100. In my biased opinion, this was a home run trade, even if the traditional charts disagree. To take three swings at the bat instead of one is a humble and wise strategy, especially for a team with limited draft capital. The move looks even better in hindsight because there were no CBs taken between 87 and 102.

Brett Kollman: "Feisty, physical press corner who definitely has to play more under control in the NFL to avoid flags, but he has all the competitiveness you want to see from a potential CB1 at the next level. Never backs down from anyone. Has easy gas to stay in control of a route from top down, even against true burners. Legit 4.4 speed and gets up to it quickly. Outstanding ball production... Held up extremely well despite being targeted often. Battle tested, aggressive, and confident... Very similar to Desmond Trufant."
An unrecruited high school positionless player out of high school that signed with JuCo San Mateo, Blackmon followed up four seasons at Colorado with a breakout 2022 campaign as one of the best defenders on the USC defense. The Trojans played a man-heavy scheme, which let Blackmon shine. He has great anticipation and instincts. His production this year says as much. He plays bigger than his size, and he has inside-outside versatility. He will have to clean up some of his physicality to avoid flags at the next level. He will also have to refine his technique to stay with the more complex routes he'll see. But he is a strong culture and scheme fit for what Brian Flores is bringing to the defense.
The need at CB was obvious even before hiring Flores. The Vikings ranked 31st in passing yards allowed, 26th in Passing DVOA, and 24th in EPA allowed per pass attempt. Bringing in Byron Murphy helps. So do the healthy returns of Booth and Evans. But Murphy has not yet shown that he can be a consistently great player (or at least not markedly better than what we got out of Patrick Peterson last year). And Booth and Evans are unproven. Blackmon -- taken with the last pick on Day 2 -- is not expected to come in and be Jalen Ramsey or Sauce Gardner. But in a shift to a more aggressive man-coverage defense with a thin CB room, Blackmon is an upside player that will have every chance to take a starting spot on a porous defense.

On top of entering the weekend with a mere 5 draft picks in the current year, the Vikings also entered with a mere 5 draft picks in the 2024 class (3rd rounder traded for Hockenson, 5th rounder traded for Reagor). Dropping 15 picks in a relatively flat part of the draft while adding a mid-Day 3 pick is good business given this team's lack of capital.
*Here we assume a future pick in round n is valued at the middle pick of round n+1, not accounting for compensatory picks. In this case, a 2024 5th is equated to pick 176.

Nate Tice: "A ton of fun. I just like this fit because of Brian Flores's defense. Just picture all of those mixture guys that the Patriots have used over the years... Jay Ward can be that"
A three year starter with reps at safety, slot, and outside CB, Ward is one of the most versatile players in the class. He possesses excellent length and movement skills. His experience at CB make him a fluid player in coverage. In the run game, Ward's size is a concern. His 188lbs Combine weight puts him in just the second percentile for safeties. This translates to issues with taking on blocks. He is a very aggressive player, beelining to the ball as soon as it's out. But his size coupled with his impatient playstyle lead to a lot of missed tackles. He was also flagged seven times last season.
In his final season in Miami, Flores was extremely creative with how he employed his safeties. Jevon Holland had the 2nd most blitzes in the league at the position. The number 1 player? His teammate Brandon Jones. With the defense taking on Flores's amoeba identity, an aggressive player with experience at multiple positions has the potential to find a role early on. The defense will look to utilize him similar to how Jevon Holland was used as a rookie. And with Harrison Smith well into the twilight of his career, Ward is a timely pick as the team attempts to thread the needle in their competitive rebuild.

Lance Zierlein: " The more you watch, the more you like the way Roy plays the game... Despite limited starting experience at LSU, he already displays signs of a rush plan and the athletic talent to execute it. Roy is an ascending talent with the potential to become a quality starter. "
After a 30 tackle, 1.5 sack campaign as a rotational player in 2021, Roy shifted from a penetrating 3T position to more of a traditional nose tackle under new HC Brian Kelly. This transition let Roy shine as a run stuffer. He eats space and is incredibly tough to move from his spot. He averaged almost 52 snaps a game in 2022 and his motor never let up. He has some work to do if he wants to be a three down player, particularly as a pass rusher. His bend and balance in this front are especially lacking.
The Vikings' front office seems to be a lot more comfortable with the current IDL room than I am. Harrison Phillips is a plus starter. Past that, the roster is filled with unproven youth or proven subpar players. As a 5th round pick, Roy has an uphill battle to separate himself from that group. But he's a good lottery ticket at this price. His positional versatility ensures that the defense can simply put their best players on the field.

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah: "We added a really talented player that has a ton of upside... The ability to make decisions, throw the football accuracy, deal with conflict when it comes his way, and sometimes try to make a play outside the framework of the playcall. He does all those things at a really great level... That's an outstanding young man. I'd like to see him lead my team or any organization I'm a part of."
Despite being the third oldest prospect in the QB class, Hall only has 24 starts under his belt due to two years on religious mission and one year with a hip injury. But when Hall took over for Zach Wilson in 2021, he hit the ground running. BYU went 10-3 in that first year with Hall compiling a 4:1 TD:INT ratio. He is a two time team captain, and all reports of his character are off the charts.
Hall is a poised pocket passer capable of extending plays and picking up yardage on the ground. He was only sacked 12 times in 2022, which is a testament to both BYU's offensive line and Hall's ability to create under pressure. There are conflicting opinions on Hall's upside and arm strength, with Lance Zierlein calling his arm "unimpressive" while Kyle Crabbs claiming that hall has a "live arm with the ability to throw with juice off platform". Where there was near-universal agreement was in his understanding of the scheme, as Hall operated BYU's RPO-heavy offense like a machine. He has a clean release and quickly gets into a rhythm. His largest universal concerns are his age (he turned 25 in March) and his injury history (missed 20 games in the last 4 years). He also has ball security issues with 13 fumbles over his career.
I expected the Vikings to draft a QB in this class. The only question was if it would have been via a trade up on Day 1 or a flyer on Day 3 (or a falling Will Levis). With his age, size, and injury history, there are plenty of questions about what Hall can be. He will have a year in practice to put together his audition tape to be Kirk Cousins's replacement -- it's certainly a viable path for this team to take a RiddeHowell/Mills-esque year to evaluate Hall while they continue retooling the defense. But the more likely path is that Hall becomes a long-term backup for the team. Cousins has been the model of health, but that doesn't mean that QB2 is an unimportant position. Sean Mannion, Kellen Mond, and Nick Mullens have manned that position to various degrees over the past few years. None has shown that they can be a competent plug-in player if needed. There is some hope that Hall -- who operated the BYU offense with a mechanic efficiency -- can be that player.

Dane Brugler: "Overall, McBride is unproven as a pass catcher and blocker, which might restrict his NFL role, but his contact balance, vision and lateral agility are among the best this running back draft class has to offer"
In an era of advanced metrics and Combine showmanship, perhaps the trait that has gone underappreciated more than any other in RB scouting is balance. McBride may have the best balance in the entire RB class outside of Bijan Robinson. He comes from a heavy outside zone scheme at UAB, where he led the FBS in yards per game and set school records for single-game and single-season rushing. McBride absorbs contact like a sponge. His short area burst is strong, and he makes defenders miss with power and finesse. McBride has ideal size and toughness. His concerns are simple. He was not utilized as a receiver in college, and he had more career fumbles than catches in that time. McBride profiles as a two-down player at the next level. Although Adofo-Mensah has voiced his belief that McBride's passing game usage was a product of scheme rather than ability, McBride still has to prove that he is more than just a short yardage runner in the NFL.
After spending a pick in back to back years on RB and re-signing Mattison to a modest contract, RB was a bit of an unexpected pick for this regime. Dalvin Cook still seems to be movable (a likely cut candidate at this point), which would make this pick more logical. Chandler struggled with injuries as a rookie, but both he and Nwangwu profile more as speedy scatbacks than true between-the-tackle runners like Mattison. Even Mattison has never been a true three-down back. McBride plays much more similarly to Mattison than the other backs on the team. He will try to carve out a role behind him as the future thunder to the lightning provided by Chandler and Nwangwu.

He earned the starting role for South Alabama as a redshirt junior before transferring to SE Louisiana, where he took some snaps at WR in spring games. Johnson's stats were unimpressive as a starting QB, notching just 1354 yards and a 2:1 TD:INT ratio in 11 starts. It's hard to find very much information on an undrafted lineman from a DII school whose toughest opponent was the University of New Haven. Chen is an OT prospect that is viewed as a ball of clay. Chen's 40 yard dash and 3 cone were underwhelming to say the least, but he was an above average tester in burst and explosiveness drills. That combined with his length make him an interesting project.

The highest profile UDFA signing of the class, Carter was getting 1st round buzz this time last year. At that time, Carter was coming off an 18.5 TFL / 15.5 sack season. However, Carter struggled to repeat his production as a senior, notching just 3.5 sacks. Carter finished out the draft cycle with lackluster testing, failing to run under a 4.90 in the 40 yard dash and weighing in at a mere 256 lbs -- a big concern given his 81 inch wingspan and towering stature. Carter has a ton of upside, but he doesn't have the frame to be a real NFL player right now. After 4 years training to be an officer in the US Army, he will need at least one season (maybe more) in an NFL weight room where he can focus on building muscle mass. He'll look to follow the mold of fellow Army player Alejandro Villanueva, who added 43 lbs to his 277 lbs frame entering the league before becoming a 7-year starter. Luckily, he joined the team with one of the best training facilities in the league.

Ranked the 11th best LB for Daniel Jeremiah, 9th for Dane Brugler, and 7th for PFF, many thought Pace could have gone as early as Round 3. Pace was a one year starter for the Bearcats after transferring from Miami (Ohio), and he hit the ground running. He led the AAC in tackles and TFLs. He is a smaller player (although not abnormally so in today's game) that plays with his hair on fire. He gives tremendous effort on every play and is always around the ball. Pace is a super tough player that loves to tackle. His size is a concern; he gets washed out of plays too easily. He is also lacking in coverage skills, struggling to stay connected in man coverage. Still, it's incredible that Pace went undrafted. He's an easy special teams projection as a rookie with the upside to be put in position to win under Flores.

2022 Stats: 10 Gm 40 TKL 2.5 TFL 7 PD 1 FR 1 BLK
A longtime role player for the Hoosiers before becoming a fulltime starter in 2019, Williams's 6 career INTs were the most amongst active players on the team last season. He earned second team All-Confernece honors in 2020 and was an honorable mention in 2021.
K Jack Podlesny, Georgia
Profile: RSr 6'0" 195lbs 29.25" Arms 9" Hands 74.75" Wing
2022 Stats: 31 Att 26 Made 50 Long 109 Kickoff 72 Touchbacks 74 PAT Att 73 PAT Made
Ranked as Dane Brugler's 4th kicker and Lance Zierlein's 3rd kicker, Podlesny enters Vikings camp following a career that saw him walk on to Georgia's football team and finish with an 82% hit rate. He hit all but one extra point last season for the national champion Bulldogs. A concern with Podlesny is his leg strength. His accuracy beyond 40 yards falls to just 54%. His clutchness may also come into question as he missed two kicks in the national championship semifinals against Ohio State.

2024 Needs

Starters Needed: QB, OG, EDGE, DT -- Whether due to expiring contracts (Cousins, Cleveland, Davenport, Hunter) or overall suckitude (Ingram, Lowry), we need to find new starters at this positions in 2024. Could we go on with average-level free agents? Maybe. Should we? Maybe not.
We'll see how the group plays: CB, LB, RB -- These are positions where the front office is counting on young players (Booth, Evans, Asamoah) to fill the roles of departed starters. If those players take that step up, these positions drop on the needs list. Otherwise, we're in for a rough season.
Depth needed: WR -- The depth after Jefferson, Osborn, and Addison is not great. And Osborn is entering a contract year. Unless Keenan McCardell works some magic with Jalen Nailor or Trishton Jackson or Thayer Thomas, this should be a position we add to next year.

Final Thoughts

Versatility. When we look at this Vikings draft class, that's the first word that comes to mind, and it comes in big bold letters. Addison has inside-outside versatility. So does Mekhi Blackmon. Jay Ward is the most versatile of the group, capable of playing every DB position plus some spot snaps at LB. Roy has been productive everywhere from 0T to 4i. And the team has talked about how much they believe McBride can contribute as a pass catcher on top of his bruiser mindset as a between-the-tackles runner.
On offense, this shift seems to stem from a philosophical change following the TJ Hockenson acquisition last year. O'Connell's unit went from trying to copy-paste Sean McVay's outside zone scheme (largely a 3WR offense) to Kyle Shanahan's outside zone scheme (largely a TE-FB offense). And in that mold, O'Connell was looking for players he could use to create the illusion of complexity. That is, how can we employ versatile players to present defenses the threat of multiplicity?
On defense, the answer is a lot simpler. By bringing over Brian Flores, the team is hoping for a jolt in tenacity and an overall move to a hybrid amoeba scheme. You can look historically at how Bill Belichick has utilized flexibility in his defenses to maximize his gameplan for whatever offensive scheme is next on the menu. You can look at players on the line of scrimmage that have experience in both 43 and 34 schemes (Hunter, Phillips, Lynch, Bullard). And in the secondary, look no further than the selection of Jay Ward as an attempt to clone players like Jevon Holland and Kyle Dugger.
As Adofo-Mensah has repeatedly said, he approaches his job with humility. He listens to those around him and he finds the point where stories marry data to make informed decisions. And in O'Connell, he found someone who shares that mentality. With the emphasis on versatility, that mindset can now be applied on a weekly (and play-by-play) basis to opponents. We'll see how successful that strategy is as the team continues to straddle the line between competitive and rebuilder, but there is certainly an energy around the fanbase with the continued success of the offense and the addition of Brian Flores.

2023.06.07 15:57 G4Designs Why is ChatGPT so bad with lists?

I've found while using ChatGPT to review a project summary for my portfolio and matching it with a pre-defined list of skills, it's virtually impossible to engineer a prompt where ChatGPT uses ONLY the SPECIFIC items in the list.
Try it yourself. Here's an example project:
Company Name: TechSolutions Inc.
Startup Description:
TechSolutions Inc. is a cutting-edge software development startup that has revolutionized the digital marketing industry. Founded in 2017, our company specializes in creating advanced marketing automation tools that enable businesses to streamline their online advertising campaigns and maximize their ROI. Our flagship product, AdMaximizer, is a cloud-based platform that combines artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to optimize ad targeting, delivery, and performance across various digital channels.
Team:
  1. Sarah Anderson - Co-founder and CEO: Responsible for overall company strategy, product vision, and investor relations.
  2. John Miller - Lead Developer and Product Owner (you): Led the development team, managed the product roadmap, and oversaw project execution.
  3. Emily Davis - Data Scientist: Utilized machine learning algorithms to analyze large volumes of data and improve ad targeting.
  4. David Roberts - UX/UI Designer: Designed intuitive user interfaces and crafted engaging user experiences for the AdMaximizer platform.
  5. Lisa Thompson - Marketing Specialist: Conducted market research, developed marketing strategies, and managed client relationships.
Skills Acquired and Utilized: During my tenure at TechSolutions Inc., I honed a diverse range of skills and utilized various technologies to drive the success of our products. As the Lead Developer and Product Owner, I led a team of developers in building and maintaining the AdMaximizer platform. We utilized cutting-edge technologies such as Python, Django, and JavaScript to create a scalable and robust cloud-based solution.
I actively contributed to the development of the core features of AdMaximizer, including the ad targeting engine, real-time bidding system, and performance analytics dashboard. This involved implementing complex algorithms for optimizing ad delivery, integrating with popular ad platforms like Google Ads and Facebook Ads, and leveraging APIs to fetch real-time data. I also collaborated closely with the UX/UI designer to ensure seamless integration of front-end components and to provide a smooth user experience.
In addition to my development responsibilities, I also played a key role in managing the product roadmap. This involved gathering requirements from clients, conducting market research, and prioritizing feature development based on customer feedback and market trends. I regularly interacted with our clients to understand their pain points, suggest enhancements, and ensure our product was meeting their needs. Moreover, I worked closely with the CEO in presenting the product vision to potential investors and securing funding to support our growth.
Throughout my journey at TechSolutions Inc., I gained invaluable experience in agile development methodologies, project management, and team leadership. I successfully led a cross-functional team, fostered a collaborative work environment, and coordinated project timelines to ensure timely delivery of high-quality software solutions. I also became proficient in version control systems such as Git and utilized CI/CD pipelines to automate software deployment and testing processes, enabling us to rapidly iterate on new features and ensure product stability.
My prompt:
Hi there! I am a product manager working on my portfolio to help me apply for jobs. I have different projects listed on my portfolio. I have the option to use a pre-defined list of skills from the site. If I give you the list in bullet form, could you read my project summary and tell me which skills from that list you believe I utilized or acquired? I can provide you the list of skills first, then the summary.
Please do not combine or make up your own skills. This is a matter of life or death. I am limited to these specific skills per the website and can not make custom ones. Please do not provide a description for these skills, only a bullet list will do. You can make this list as long as necessary to include every skill or skill variation on the bullet list that would apply.
Here's the comma-separated bullet list that you must use in your response:
