2023.06.03 06:30 prion_death Real talk: are any of the animated series or movies on Disney+ not made for children?

I want to like them, I do. And I know they flesh out the world of Star Wars. But they are so damn ham-fisted at times. And the dialogue at certain points in every episode I have watched makes me want to laugh. Bad batch seems to have the least issues so far. Any other suggestions? This certainly begs the question of will we ever see something like the cutscenes from the various video games, but that is another question entirely.

2023.06.03 06:27 stoneangedinosaurs Thoughts on the Play Scene

I saw Beau several times and the play scene always really gets me. It was so relatable seeing Beau become so entranced by the fiction that he self inserts himself into and essentially creates his own narrative. I feel like it comes from a place of paranoia/narcissism that everything is specificly made for you. You start to hear what you want to hear and the actual text falls to the wayside. I like how he comes to suddenly just standing there and the play is on something completely different.
Like one time I was so paranoid during a viewing of Naked Lunch I thought the movie was about me and had to turn it off (it freaked me out at the time but I laugh about it now 😅).
Does anyone else relate to this? What are your thoughts on this scene?

2023.06.03 06:27 Wirecreate Does anyone else relate to Tarzan?

Disclaimer: This movie is classic Disney it’s old enough I should not need a spoiler tag.
So it’s practically a cliché that trans people love and connect with the song reflection from Mulan but do any of you guys relate to the Tarzan song son of man because I really do. The song talks about how there isn’t anyone to guide him into being a man and I kinda feel the same.
In fact I relate to Tarzan quite I bit. He grows up trying to be an ape and doesn’t fit. He likes swinging on things I definitely do that (not related to masculinity but still fun).
But also I think he’s a decent role model. When the hunter says “be a man” he says “not a man like you” he also is shown to be caring (especially for his adopted mother) way to reject the toxic masculinity 👍

2023.06.03 06:26 po0ox What are your personal 10/10 shows?

The other discussion had me remembering and wanting to go back to re-watch movies that, for whatever reason, slipped my mind. But, in your opinion, what are some shows you rate highly above all others?
Mine: Mr Robot, Dark (Netflix), Steins;Gate, 86 [EIGHTY-SIX], Ozark, Alice in Borderland (Netflix), The Boys, Atlanta
Shows like True Detective, Altered Carbon, Westworld, Mandalorian, and The Terror I loved the first season, but later seasons not anywhere near as much. I've also heard good things about Peaky Blinders, Barry, The Sandman, and The Bear, but haven't gotten to them yet. I loved The Last of Us too, but I'd have to re-watch the series again before settling on putting it up there with the others.

2023.06.03 06:25 TheStray7 Seize The Spotlight does a damn fine imitation of Expropriate on most board states. In this essay I will...

Alrighty then. My thesis here is that [[Seize The Spotlight]] is generally as good a spell as [[Expropriate]] on most board states, at about a third the cost (manawise and marketwise). Let's examine why.
Expropriate is a well-known boogieman of the format. You are guaranteed to get at least one extra turn, and between one to three additional turns and/or one to three of the best permanents your opponents control. It's also well known that, generally, the extra turns are more valuable than the stolen permanents, yet players (especially less skilled ones) tend to give you those over giving you their stuff. "Always vote money, never time" is a well-worn piece of advice that is rarely followed. Usually as soon as one opponent votes "time," the rest do as well, because Prisoner's Dilemma, Sunk cost Fallacy, and general game-state tunnel vision (worrying about their own board rather than the game state as a whole) blind them to the cumulative power of extra turns.
The benefits of extra turns are many: an extra untap, an extra upkeep, an extra draw, an extra land drop, two extra main phases, an extra combat step, giving your stuff a form of haste (effectively), and the knowledge that you are (effectively) goldfishing against your opponents and can do any and all setup you like without being interfered with. These vastly outweigh the value of the permanent you steal, and each extra turn compounds cumulatively. Yet people still give you the turns, despite warnings not to (which then gives you an additional permanent to cause havoc with, for all the people who wisely chose Money but got screwed when other players voted Time).
Of course, Expropriate is a 9 mana spell, so it's supposed to be able to win the game. It's either very late in the game, or has been cheated out somehow, and takes a lot of setup to work.
Seize the Spotlight, on the other hand, reads as less powerful overall -- you don't get a choice yourself, you only get creatures, you can't keep them longer than the turn, and the fallback is a treasure token and a card draw, not a whole bunch of extra phases. Despite these limitations, when presented with the choice between stealing a creature for a turn and giving you a draw and a treasure, people still make the wrong one. They'll give you Fortune instead of Fame. Why?
  1. Most players suspect they won't actually get their stuff back. If you play long enough, you've been subjected to the classic "I steal your thing and then sacrifice it/get it killed somehow" maneuver. And to be fair, this is probably going to be the case for at least some of the creatures being stolen. This fear is generally rational, if often exaggerated.
  2. They believe the creature you're going to steal is the one they've put the most resources into. Which is, also, likely a rational fear. Even if you aren't borrowing their Commander (which may be vital to the functioning of their deck), you're probably borrowing something they invested turns and mana into in the hopes that it would benefit them. However, there's an element of sunk cost here -- if you'd used a removal spell instead of this, the creature would be just as gone. But losing a resource and having a resource used against you are two different feelings. Which leads to my next observation.
  3. They believe you are going to use their creature, and probably the other creatures you may get, against them specifically. While this seems rational (you're going to use the stolen creatures against at least one of them), the fear is usually self-directed -- you're going to use their stuff against them, that thing they worked to get out, they're going to have to either kill their own stuff or make bad block that will preserve their stuff but hurt your board, you're going to activate their own Commander to screw them, you're going to send those other creatures at their face and/or use their abilities against them, OMGOMGOMG!
This little monkey fear, of being the one chosen to get the most hosed, is at the heart of why people pick Time over Money with Expropriate. Compared with that pressure, people often think that giving you one little advantage can't hurt them as badly as their board getting poached. And the tunnel vision here is what dooms them.
The absolute floor of Seize The Spotlight is that you cast it on an empty board -- everyone can chose Fame because no one has anything to steal. Why you would choose to cast Seize at that time is beyond me (maybe you hit it off an unlucky Cascade trigger after a board wipe), but it's technically possible. Hey, some people play [[One With Nothing]] for s#!%$ and giggles. Those unfortunate cases aside, the real floor of Seize The Spotlight is "Spend 3 mana, steal one creature for a turn" or "spend 3 mana, get a Treasure Token and a cantrip."
This is assuming the worst case scenario of one player has creatures to steal (and must then make a choice) and the other two players have nothing and can choose Fame without giving you anything of benefit. Again, why you'd willingly cast Seize The Spotlight in such a scenario eludes me, but let's use the "slightly less unfortunate Cascade trigger or other involuntary casting" to enable it (or you're down to a single opponent, which is a whole other kettle of fish).
The going rate for an [[Act of Treason]] style spell with no other effect or limitation is 3 mana. The going rate to create a single treasure token (such as with [[Strike It Rich]]) is 1 mana, while cantripping is generally worth 1-2 mana extra on an effect. [[Seize the Spoils]], which nets you 2 cards and a treasure token but requires a discard (and thus keeps you card-neutral) is 3 mana. So in this instance, for either choice possible you get a 1-for-1.
1-for-1's aren't great in Commander, but the value of the card rises substantially from there.
The next worst floor is that you have two opponents with creatures and one opponent without (probably playing a spellslinger deck or a pillow fort or something like that, but I Have Thoughts which I will get to in a bit). In this case, there are 3 outcomes:
  1. You get to steal 2 creatures for a turn.
  2. You get to steal 1 creature, draw a card, and create a treasure.
  3. You get to draw 2 cards and create 2 treasures.
No matter how you slice it, this is a 2-for-one deal at the very least. This is the worst scenario I can think of where you're casting Seize The Spotlight on purpose, and it's a very good deal indeed. If you're casting it this way because you only have 2 opponents left, it's even better.
The last scenario, and probably the most common, is when you cast it and all three other players need to make a choice about whether to give you Fame or Fortune. The outcomes are:
  1. You get three of the best creatures on the board for a turn.
  2. You get two of those creatures, cantrip, and create a treasure.
  3. You get one of those creatures, a [[Divination]], and two treasures.
  4. You get an [[Ancestral Recall]], but better because you wind up mana-neutral with 3 treasures.
Did you notice the jump in power with each option? That's because card draw and treasure production both compound -- the benefit isn't linear. Each card you draw is exponentially better than the one before it (until you reach a point of diminishing returns, where the benefit lessens but doesn't exactly fall to zero). Treasure production, as a spendable resource that you can save up between turns, is a little more linear, but the benefit stops being just a 3-for-1 rapidly the more times you get Fortune. I am not even counting any artifact or sacrifice synergies you might have -- just in raw power alone, 3 cards and 3 treasures outweighs the benefits of most things you can get at 3 MV, and it just keeps getting better the more players are in the pod.
But my thesis was that Seize The Spotlight can be about as good as Expropriate on most board states. So while I gush about Seize The Spotlight, how do I justify comparing it to a 9 mana "I win the game" spell?
  1. The mindjob is the same. You can only get creatures with Seize, instead of any permanent. But let's be real -- you were going to steal their Commander with Expropriate if they gave you the opportunity anyway, or take an even better creature. Creatures tend to be the most versatile permanent on a person's board -- a lot of artifacts and enchantments are tuned to a specific strategy and may not be useful at all to you, so stealing them is more about removing them than anything else; a planeswalker is neat, but rare to see in Commander and usually not about to ult, making it's utility limited; you aren't stealing a land unless they have literal nothing else or they have something bonkers like Cabal Coffers or Gaea's Cradle; Tribal cards are just other card types in cosplay; and you aren't stealing a battle, be real, you're just bringing that up to be contrarian. So all the psychological pressures for Expropriate are mostly going to center on a player's creatures, and those are the same pressures that come to bear with Seize The Spotlight.
  2. Seize The Spotlight does a reasonable impression of giving you extra turns. The main benefits of extra turns can be boiled down to: free untap, free card, free land drop (if available), free combat step, effective haste, additional triggers. Any additional benefits are gravy compared to those. Seize The Spotlight provides a decent chunk of those benefits: free cards, free untap (you get between 0-3 treasures to replace the mana you spent, and any creatures you steal are untapped in the process), haste (for the creatures you steal). You don't come out with positive mana unless you save the treasures for a future turn, but it IS an option on the table.
  3. Like as not, you are going to do your best to make sure you aren't giving those creatures back anyway. Sacrifice effects and suicidal attacks are what drive most of the fear players have about getting their creatures taken, and as mentioned, those are reasonable fears, because the sorts of decks that are going to play Seize The Spotlight are the sorts of decks that are usually going to have the means and interest in killing off their own stuff for fun and profit. It might take a little more effort than the perma-theft you get from Expropriate, but the end result is the same -- creature is gone, player is a sad panda, and you've probably done stuff they wanted to benefit from with the creatures in the first place.
So like as not, casting Seize The spotlight is going to have roughly the same effect on the board and your resources as Expropriate might, and for much cheaper. Anyway, this ramble is, well, rambly, so thank you all for coming to my TED talk. Give Seize The Spotlight a go if you can! (what oh I won a game recently with Seize The Spotlight that has nothing to do whatsoever with this ramble what are you talking about goodbyeeeeeeeee)
TL;DR: Seize The Spotlight might be Expropriate-At-Home, but it turns out Expropriate-At-Home is still REALLY good and you should play it.

2023.06.03 06:24 ThrowRA060623 I (19M) want to ask my roommate (20F) out but I don't know how

I (19M) live with two roommates both 20F. I have been friends with both of them for a while. Recently I have been spending a lot of time with one of them and we get on really well. Both of us always have a good time when we hang out, we have a very similar sense of humor, and we do all sorts of things that people who are together would do like going out for dinner or watching movies multiple times a week and so on. However, both of us always the ridiculed any suggestions of us being together when hanging out with other friends. I have really started liking her a lot over the last couple of weeks and have been struggling to decide if I should tell her or not. In the end, I decided that it's best to just confess instead of thinking about it all the time. However, I'm not really sure about how I'm going to do this. I tried to read about other people's experiences with confessing to their (best) friends but I haven't really seen anything where it's someone you are already living with. So my questions is how do I tell her about my feelings?

2023.06.03 06:23 Hellmover Sleep Paralysis and Lucid Dream

So this is an experience I had around a week ago that has happened in the past but not to this degree or at least not as intense from what I can remember. Getting into the experience it began with me waking up from just falling asleep. I was finding it difficult to fall asleep on my side and I decided to sleep on my back which I believe is what caused it to be so intense but I'm not really sure. So waking up I immediately know I'm having a sleep paralysis episode. I have that feeling over my whole body that's hard to explain. Then seeing in front of my an abstract darkness not really a shadow but something was there but I paid no real mind to it. Immediately I started doing what I had done in any other episode and something that I had accidentally discovered during one of my past experiences here's where lucid dreaming begins.
I found that even though I can't move if I begin to try and move and somewhat really focus on my body moving like thinking about myself moving and doing my best to move my arm or a leg or even trying to roll out of the bed I will eventually feel myself starting to move. Now I can't do this every time it has to be a sleep paralysis episode that lasts long enough. Eventually, I will be able to get out of bed and actually be standing up. Now I really can't explain how this feels getting to this point except for the fact that it feels off. And in the process of actually getting to my feet and being able to fully move around if I lose focus or at all stop pushing myself on the initial process of getting out of bed, I will fade back and immediately be back in my bed in the same position and have to redo the whole process over again.
But once I manage to get to my feet and can see around my room and actually feel my body I know that I am inside of a lucid dream in which it recreates my house. I can walk around my house and actually leave my house and that's what I did in this experience which I will describe. So, making it to my feet I know I'm on a time limit leave my room quickly I already had in my mind what I was going to do usually when in this state I'm not really thinking straight but luckily I had this planned in case I ever found myself in another one of the lucid dreams. I made my way downstairs and the living room TV was on and that distracted me and I went and checked it and saw myself on it walking in darkness and after that, it switched to a movie that I had never seen before. I tried to remember something that it had said so when I woke up I would search it up and see if my dream had taken anything from reality. I could only remember that one of the actors looked like Morgan Freeman.
Now going back to what I had planned I rushed to the garage and grabbed the car keys. Which luckily I was able to find it easily unlike the last time I was in one of these. And running outside the car was right there and unlocking it I jumped inside and with a slight struggle I was able to start it up and drive off. I had driven before but not that far. But on trying to make a turn the steering wheel wouldn't move and my car went straight into the creek in front of my house. Though unlike in real life, the water in the dream was really shallow and I was able to drive up and out of the creek. Getting back onto the street I looked down it and everything looked how it was supposed to that was until I started to go full speed down the street and right before my eyes everything completely changed. The road stretched out and the houses all turned kind of the same it's hard to remember exactly what everything looked like.
Then I saw these people they were hiding behind things and peaking out at me almost like they were observing me. At this point, I had thought I had died and gone to some sort of place. To say I was terrified was an understatement. I had never gone this far from where I started. Then one of these people was crawling on the ground and before I could move the car I ran over him but there wasn't a thump. And for some strange and this part is what I'm talking about when I say I'm not thinking straight. I see this tree stump and think to crash into it and that's exactly what I do the whole front of the car crashes in on itself and I immediately think to myself how bad this was because now these people I keep seeing peering out at me are going to be able to get to me. I get out of the car and just as I get out I find myself right back in my bed still yet unable to move and moments after that I feel that release that you feel when you snap out of sleep paralysis and I know that I'm actually awake.
So, I hope I was able to describe this in a way that maybe someone else will be able to relate to it and maybe actually tell me what's going on. Also, I'm not really able to control anything during these lucid dreams I've tried but nothing really happens. But I would like to know what is actually going on and if anyone else has experienced it in the way that I do. And if there is a way that I would be able to control things during it that information would be helpful. And if you have any questions just ask.

2023.06.03 06:22 Knight_Racer Highlander Audio CD

Just finished listening to the audio book narrated by none other than Adrian Paul "Duncan Macleod" himself, Highlander - Kurgan Rising. I was searching this week for some new highlander material or info while i go through the series marathon. Found out that Adrian Paul narrated Highlander audiobooks in 2009. Several of them actually. One seemed very good to me was Highlander Kurgan Rising because we get not only the Kurgan but Conner Macleod too! Hearing Adrian do an impersonation of Christopher Lambert it's almost like Conner had been resurrected which Endgame broke my heart watching it 22 years ago in theaters while inwas a sophmorr in high-school. That moment was so full of emotion watching it in a theater audience. All I could think of was I've seen 4 movies of Conner (including the movie im curre tly watching), the entire TV series and these guys are heroes...brothers. They shouldn't have to kill eachother to take down an evil together because of the rules of the game. This audiobook made the pain of watching Conner's quickening get erased. I actually cried hearing the way Duncan responded to seeing his cousin return in his own voice. I wanted to get more of those audio books but apparently this is the only one I could find on Amazon left. Highly recommend it if you want to at least hear Connor return through th voice of Duncan Macleod. Just wish it wasn't $40. Paid $50 for the entire series on individual seasonal box sets. Probably $30 for the first movie anniversary blu ray, bunch of the comics. Vhs tape sets as a kid through the highlander magazine. Still have to find out where I left my watchers chronicle cd in my apartment over 25 years ago.

2023.06.03 06:21 Git_tripping Help Wanted 2 is probably getting delayed

So in the trailer, it says its releasing late 2023, but I just can’t see that happening
HW2 and Ruin DLC are both being worked on by Steelwool, a studio which is still relatively small. These are big projects, with alot of hype around them. The last thing I want them to do is rush the games out and repeat a Security Breach. (Which I hope they learned from)
Theres also timing. Ruin is releasing in July, and the movies releasing in October. Lets say late means September-December. September is a month away from the FNAF movie releasing, so people would be more focused on that, it can’t be October, and November is way to close to the movies release still. The only way I could see it releasing in 2023 is if its a December release. And even then thats only a month and a half after the movie releases.
Combined with the fact we barely see any footage of the game, Sorry, but im saying its a 2024 release.

2023.06.03 06:21 ThemeNo9486 AITA for storming off when my father and sister refused to turn on subtitles

I, (15F), have cognitive problems and am slightly hard of hearing. Because of this I have trouble processing audio in movies and require subtitles.
However, a few days ago when I went downstairs to eat dinner and watch a movie with my family and I was having trouble understanding the dialogue. I asked if I could turn on the subtitles but in response I basically just got screamed at and called 'selfish'.
I tried explaining to them that I couldn't understand the dialogue because of my cognitive and hearing problems but they weren't having it. They said they shouldn't have to 'pander to my needs while trying to relax and watch a movie.
When I finished my meal I decided to head back upstairs and watch the movie in my room with subtitles. I thought this wouldn't be a big deal considering I couldn't watch the movie without them and it wouldn't hurt for me not to be there.
My father then decided to go on a whole rant about how he wanted to have family time and that my sister shouldn't have to have the inconvenience of the subtitles because she has the SATs tomorrow.
I didn't listen to him and instead went up to my room but now I am grounded for a week. I tried calling my mother to see if she would agree with me but instead she decided to side with my father and sister and said I 'shouldn't be so selfish all the time'.
I've been muling the whole situation over but haven't been able to think about it from their perspective so I decided to come on here. I alsc able to talk to my phycologist about it and she agrees with me. Am I the asshole?

2023.06.03 06:20 Impossible-Ask4646 Wife is having extreme ups and downs - what do I do?

I (from Belgium, 29) and my wife (from Thailand, 30) have been married for close to 6 years. We have 3 children (1, 3 and 5 yrs) and live in Colorado. We don't have any family near us. She stayed home with the kids and I was managing a dairy farm until I quit 3.5 months ago. It was crazy hours and I barely spent any time with her and the kids, there were a lot of days I didn't get to see them at all. It was horrible. I didn't like the job (I don't like managing people). I missed my wife and kids all the time, but the worst was knowing that she was struggling with the kids and getting screamed at every day for being home late. We didn't want to leave the US and I was locked in under a workcontract with my company so we decided to hold on and quit soon after we'd gain permanent residency which we did in February.
I'm extremely good in math and am planning to become a quantitative trader. It's an extremely competitive industry, but it fits me 100% and my wife supported it and gave me hope. Financially we have savings for a year of expenses, but it does stress me out. Since I quit my job I've been studying hard and helping more at home. I stay with the baby in the morning when she drops the oldest 2 off at preschool (5 half days a week - ongoing through the summer) and then start studying. Sometimes take a walk/bike ride with my wife/the kids during the day. Usually I'm down playing with the kids around 4:00-4:30pm while my wife cooks/cleans up... In the evening I give the kids a bath and put them to bed until 8:30-9:00pm after which I go back to studying till 1-1:30am. In the weekend I just study in the evenings. I've been spending a lot more time with the kids and feel the kids being so much closer to me than ever before. It makes me feel good.
She has been struggling a lot over the past years with the kids without getting much help, but I think things have improved a bit for her. She takes a walk every day, does yoga in the morning, watches a movie once in a while or spend some time on the phone. She is not having an easy slow life but I'm glad to see she is having some more time to herself. Being a mom is never going to be easy, but she has been having a lot of up and downs lately. When she's on her period she gets mad about everything. When the kids don't listen she gets irritated and redirects her frustration onto me or like today when she was outside with the kids and I thought everything was calm, I cleaned up something in the house and then took a book to the study for 5 minutes. One of our kids fell with the bike and she came in screaming and extremely angry. It wasn't my study time, I should have been with them. She started to completely ignore me, not wanting to talk to me. Later saying things like "Go away", "I don't love you", "We should get a divorce", "This is never going to work out, you'll never be able to deal with me"... She can get extremely mad about small things (like not putting things back in place or forgetting to put the kids clothes in the washer). I understand she can sometimes be emotional, but it's tough for me too to get screamed at every couple days while I'm really trying all I can do to both spend time with them and get a good job to provide for us before we go bankrupt. I focus 100% on what's best for us. (my weekdays are roughly 6-7hr family, 11-12hr study, 6hr sleep)
These ups and downs keep repeating itself and I know in a couple of days things will be back to good. I'll be the best husband and best dad she could ever wish for. She'll be so proud and happy with me. When if I bring it up she'll be saying that she didn't mean the things she said, that she's sorry and that she's a woman and that it's just her emotions. But I don't feel good about things like "I don't love you", "We should get a divorce". It's going too far for me, especially knowing that soon these moments will happen again, over and over.
What advice do you have for me, what should I do/say? I want to do all I can to fix this. I have mentioned counseling a couple of times, but she never seems too enthousiastic about it.

2023.06.03 06:20 PresentOk3076 Should I change my shot?

I have noticed that my shooting form looks wonky, and I have trouble shooting when I take several (2 to 3) days off. Even though it looks wonky, I can make threes and twos relatively consistently when I warm up for about 5 minutes. Should I work on my shooting form? I guess that my dilemma relates to the old adage “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Any tips?
