In particular, the latter styles seem limited to non-democratic polities: Poundbury was a new city built on the initiative of the current King of England, who exercised large amounts of control over the design and architecture, and Singapore and the USSR, homes of "cheap" architecture in their government housing programs, weren't terribly democratic. Considering that they seem to be quite widely accepted by the general public, why aren't their styles more widespread in new developments in democratic countries?

"We want to go to the bathroom," announces Barbara. "We know where it is," Paula adds, "right down the gravel path." Half a dozen of the girls put on their coats and go out into the gathering darkness, carrying flashlights. Five minutes later they come running back, squealing and shoving one another to get into the cabin door. "There's something out there!" "Loud noises down by the outhouse!" "Something is going bangÂ-bang-thud, bang-bang-thud!" Motioning for quiet their leader explains that there is nothing to be frightened of in the woods. "I'll go back out with you, girls," Chaperone says with false bravado. "Maybe there are some rascally raccoons out there." Shining her flashlight on the gravel path, Chaperone leads the way toward the source of the noise. Some of the less-intimidated scouts chant, "There's lions, and tigers, and bears, of my! Lions, and tigers, and bears, oh my!" Up ahead something is going bang-bangÂ-thud! Reaching the outhouse, Chaperone takes a firmer grip on her flashlight and pushes open the first door. "Nothing in there!" She pushes open the second door. "Nothing in there!" From the other end of the outhouse comes bang-bang-Âthud! "No raccoons, girls; not even lions or bears. But watch the doors." The wind caught the doors. opening them slightly and banging them gently shut. "Oh, it's only the wind banging the doors." "Shucks" said Chaperone, wiping her brow. Back in the cabin they gathered around Mrs. Marsh who exÂplained that they would now go on a night hike. Chaperone sighed softly and put her coat back on. Down the gravel path, past the no-longer-scary outhouse, and out into a field under the stars, they walked. "Look, there's the big dipper." "And the little one too." "I can see the North Star!" Mrs. Marsh showed them several fire scars where they would do outdoor cooking tomorrow. Then they started back to the Scout Cabin singing, "The other day I saw a Bear" After washing up, spreading bedrolls, and getting into their pajamas, they divided into "details": the fire-building detail, the find the pan and melt the butter detail, and the pop the corn detail. Chaperone took pictures of the gay group and joined them in eating buttered popcorn and drinking soda pop. Then, to bed. At four o'clock in the morning, somebody shook Chaperone's shoulder and whispered in her ear, "Will you go to the bathroom with me?" Groggily Chaperone pushed back her covers and got to her feet. The scout who'd roused her was searching for something, using her flashlight as a guide. Whispers: "What are you looking for?" "My other red tennis shoe." "Did you look under your blanket?" "It's okay; I'll put on my boots instead." Just then another scout awakened and felt the need to join them. Once outside, and jogging down the now-familiar path, Chaperone became aware of how sweet and fresh the air smells at four in the morning. Three hours later Mrs. Marsh sounded reveille. Quickly everyone washed up, dressed, and began the work of the preassigned Patrols. The Water Patrol filled three "water-boys" from the outdoor pump (started by electric switch). The Cooking Patrol began making French toast. Mary, flipping a piece of toast, asked, "Does this count toward our Cooking Badge?" Mrs. Marsh assured her that it certainly did. The Hospitality Patrol gathered leaves, shells, and pretty bits of wood and fashioned centerpieces for the tables. Breakfast ready, they sat down. "Please pass the syrup," Kelly requested politely. The leader passed the pitcher. "Mrs. Marsh, that doesn't look like syrup on your French toast." "Why, this is the syrup pitchÂ- oh no, this is the coffee pitÂcher!" Only Girl Scouts unÂderstand its very special essence. Early in the afternoon, co-leader, Mrs. Bob Schultz joined the campers. They spent the next two hours studying nature. Saturday's supper offered another surprising specialty, Hawaiian Eyes. Teresa and Patty placed shortcakes filled with crushed pineapple sweetened with brown sugar in aluminum foil wrappers. After heating in the campfire they made a scrumptious dessert. Mustard, meant for the hot dogs, was spilled five times during supper, once into someone's milk. After supper, Brother Andrew arrived driving a cattle truck. Seeing the questioning look on Chaperone's face, Mrs. Schultz calmly explained that they would all ride in the back of the truck to attend mass in Baileys Harbor. It was just a windy enough ride to blow away all adult inhibitions. Before entering the church, everybody picked straw off their coats. Before bedtime the scouts put on a hairstyling contest, shrugging off the fact that sleep would muss their elegant coifÂfures. Sometime around midnight, a voice came out of the darkness. Sleepy heads started up to hear Mrs. Schultz intone, "I want one print here, and one print there!" When nothing followed this startling pronouncement, the sleepy heads giggled and sank back into their pillows. On Sunday afternoon they set off hiking down Logerquist road to visit the Brothers of St. Joseph Novitiate. Halfway there Brother Andrew met them in the cattle truck. At the farm, operated by the Brothers, the scouts were treated to horseback rides. Then, Brother John asked, "Now, who would like to ride the bull?" "The bull!! He'll throw us off!" "No, he won't. He's a gentle old fellow, really." "Okay, I'll ride him." "So will I!" And ride him they did. The adults watched from a sensible distance. After the rides, the Brothers invited them into the big recreation room of the farmÂhouse. They gathered around the piano. Brother Andrew played and the girls sang. He surprised them by knowing every request. Next, refreshments. The scouts brought out cupcakes and cookies from their totebags. Brother John served glasses of Kool-aid. Then it was time to pile into the back of the cattle truck. The girls said good-bye to Brother John and the spotted dogs, Alice and Poncho. Brother Andrew drove them back to camp. The cabin was tidied and locked. Then everyone parÂticipated in a flag ceremony to close the day. "Would you like camping here every weekend?" asked Mrs. Marsh. I grew up in an area with a lot of museums that where houses from the 1800âs and they would always have outfits that the people had worn. All the dresses were tiny. This is going to be somewhat of a long post, but bare with me. I just made a reddit account for THIS reason because I really need to get this off my chest.
I live with a 34 year old brother who is completely selfish. Ever since the passing of my late-brother (oldest one past away when he was 31), I have been taking responsibility roles after him for my parents (I am the youngest child and only daughter). Being a full-time STEM student and unemployed, I have time to accommodate my parents needs to get tasks done: everything from running errands, to the bank, making sure rent and utilities are due on time, groceries, scheduling doctor's appointments for my father, and picking up prescriptions. Life has been a train-wreck for me since 2018. My parents are immigrants with little to no English and helpless in navigating modernized, western culture. Since my oldest brother is gone, I have to take on the unspoken position to make sure everything is okay for my parents.
Second brother, he is the most selfish person I have ever encountered; definitely self-righteous and paints a picture for everyone to see that he is this humanitarian or philanthrope in person, but behind closed doors he emotionally and physically abuses my parents. Everyone who meets him, loves him, but I know his true colors.
My dad had fallen ill of last year, and I was his caregiver for some time while juggling with challenging STEM classes at my community college. It wasn't easy taking care of my father due to his condition without the help of my second older brother. (He help sometimes to take him to dialysis), but when it came to the important stuff, it was expected of me. I have cried, had mental breakdowns, and often thought about suicide because of the pressure I was being put in.
My father's retirement funds kick in every month (about $1k a month). When my dad was bed-ridden last summer, and I was too busy with college, my dad asked my second older brother to withdrawal money from my dad's account for bills, giving him access to the PIN number. Ever since then, my brother kept my father's debit card and had pocketed $300 every month without my dad's knowledge or consent. Found out, that was $3600 my brother stole from our sick, disabled father. He did this for a year. My second older brother does not pitch anything for rent even though he works full-time, taking about $4000 a month with a bonus from his VA benefits.
He cranks up the air conditioning unit really low during the summer, so my mother has to pay $200 or so during the time. He asks my mom for money so he can go to the local laundromat (how does he not have at least $20 to spare for clothes to be washed and dried as an employed man??), and he is always asking money from my uncle and aunt. All he cares about is money and cares little about helping the family. He even skipped my oldest brother's funeral because he was too "afraid" to see his brother lying in the casket (I was the only one organizing my oldest brother's funeral, by the way; that week was emotionally and mentally exhausting).
My brother has physically pushed my dad out of his bed one time during a family argument, poured cold water over my mom's head, whipped her with a belt, and when he is really angry, he brings out his guns and creates this threatening aura in the room, showing everybody how "powerful" he is with guns (he was in the army and is a huge gun collector).
A part of me fears for my parents livelihood with him here, leeching off mom and dad; disrespecting them even though they let him do anything. Both of my parents are too scared to confront him because he gets violent with the potential threat that he can pull a gun out on them. I have confronted him a few times, but it ends up pretty disordered and horrific (my head bumped pretty badly against the window one time, because we were in a car, and I was arguing with him, so he decided to drive violently on the highway).
Part of me wished that he was gone instead of my oldest brother; my oldest brother was the opposite of him despite his autism and social dilemmas. He was empathetic and cared for the family.
My brother, I feel like he is the bane of my parent's existence and will bleed my parents out to dry when it comes to finances. He refuses to move out because he wants to leech off of my parents, so that he can freely uses his paycheck however he wishes to.
Is there anything I can do? He is my blood brother and a part of me cares for him, still, but I honestly wish he was gone sometimes. This seems like a fatalistic thing to say, but things would be peaceful around the house if he was not around. I am too stressed about family life, my dad's illness, STEM degree that I am working on, and our financial issue to be dealing with my brother's rampage.

The following is my advice for interpreting V. Some of my advice comes fragmented memories of a string of vanishing snapchats I recieived during a Covid fever dream. The messages were signed T.P. Society.
I think the âStencilizedâ chapters are Pynchon at his absolute best. Readers get frustrated. These are extremely challenging at every level: tough vocabulary, unfamiliar historical settings, obscure references, countless characters, and increasingly confusing entropic plots with little closure. As a reader, youâll feel like there must be an answer hidden in the complexity and symbolism. Detective stories, youâll solve with a little research and persistence. You shouldnât get frustrated.
Remember that the narrator of the difficult âStencilizedâ chapters is Herbert Stencil, himself. Stencil, a contemporary of Benny Profane and the whole sick crew, is on an obsessive quest in search of the mysterious âVâ. Vâs transition throughout the novel loosely parallels Britainâs transition through the industrial revolution into 19th century. Transitioning from a virtuous, Victorian Empire bringing the Christ-powered light of the civilized world to the darkest depths of Africa with unquestioned protestant purpose⌠to a nation in a crisis of faith⌠a nation trying to reconcile protestant purpose with technological progress after bearing witness to the mass-produced mechanized death of The Great War.
Stencilâs obsession with âVâ began after reading his late fatherâs journals. His father, Sidney Stencil, was by profession a British spy who journaled his clandestine involvement in diplomatic crises in various international cities over the course of his career. Each of the âStencilizedâ chapters are set during one of these historical diplomatic crises. These chapters are a story of a story of a story. Pynchon provides the words. Herbert Stencil provides the voice. Sydney Stencil provides the source material. There are layers to the narrative. Itâs complicated.
Chapter 3 is especially complex from a narrative standpoint.
The chapter is divided into eight parts. Each part is told from the perspective of a different person (unspecified in the final 8th part) as imagined by Stencil with clear fabrications influenced from well-known works of literature. The narrator of the eigth and final section is unspecified, as if Stencil is imaging himself watching a movie fabricated in his mind from his fatherâs journals taking inspiration from books heâs read and biased by outcomes he hopes for. An unreliable narrator delivers a convoluted story from eight perspectives.
Here's my take on the ending of Chapter 3âs âplotâ. Itâs essential a spy (Porpentine/Goodfellow, British aligned) vs. spy (Lepsius, German/Bongo-Shaftsbury, French aligned) conflict in a British Egypt. Sydney Stencil is involved with the British intelligence team. Earlier in the chapter, itâs hinted that there may be an assassination attempt on a prominent British diplomat prior to the impeding Fashoda conflict.
Through the lens of an unspecified narrator, at the end of Chapter 3 we witness Bongo-Shaftsbury (French spy team) murdering Porpentine (Sydney Stencilâs British spy team) at the Cairo Opera house.
I think it went like this: shortly after Victoria Wren (V.) left the theater with Goodfellow (British spy), Porpentine (British spy) foils the French spy teamâs assassination attempt on a British Diplomat. Porpentine subsequently gets involved in struggle with Lepsius and then Bongo-Shaftsbury kills Porpentine.
Pynchon is intentionally making these chapters confusing and difficult. He is making a point, but he doesnât want it to be obvious. The answer is found in the work of Argentinean author, Jorge Luis Borges.
His short story, Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius, is likely a major inspiration for Pynchonâs V. Itâs extremely helpful for âgettingâ V. or at least asking the right questions when reading V.
We have a letter from Pynchon documenting his âBorges kickâ while writing V. and his debut novel is almost certainly inspired by Borgesâ story. I wonât summarize the whole story, but itâs essential pre-reading and re-reading for anyone trying to tackle V.
âBioy Casares had come to dinner at my (Borgesâ) that evening, and we had lost all track of time in a vast debate over the way one might go about composing a first-person novel whose narrator would omit or distort things and engage in all sorts of contradictions, so that a few of the bookâs readers-a very few-might divine the horrifying or banal truth. We discovered (very late at night such a discovery is inevitable) that there is something monstrous about mirrors.â â Borges, Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius
Pynchon through his narrative structure plays with the reader. He gives us unsolvable complex, cryptic plots with mysteries unsolvable. Heâs basically fucking with us. I think his main target is a big one: the Christian Church.
With Malta, Pynchon associates Sydney Stencil with Paul (the single person that wrote most of the Bibleâs New Testament). Sydney doesnât record everything (facts left out of source material), Paul likely left things out. Herbert Stencil changes portions of Sydneyâs story according to his hopes for how things will be in the future and in a way that provides order to his ideology. Paulâs writings have been translated and re-translated and interpreted and re-interpreted by the Christian Church. There are also references to Gnosticism and other heretical Christian sects that were suppressed by the early Christian Church.
Remember:

Is Pynchon a secret society trying to take down the establishment: Christianity in V., CIA and corporations in Gravityâs Rainbow? Did Ginsburg and Burroughs run into Borges during their hallucinogenic journey to South America and come up with Pynchon (a name stolen from Puritan ancestry and Hawthorneâs House of Seven Gables)? Was that note from Pynchon about his âBorges kickâ a plant for Pynchonâs world to slowly invade reality. Hronir?

I think the âStencilizedâ chapters are Pynchon at his absolute best. Readers get frustrated. These are extremely challenging at every level: tough vocabulary, unfamiliar historical settings, obscure references, countless characters, and increasingly confusing entropic plots with little closure. As a reader, youâll feel like there must be an answer hidden in the complexity and symbolism. Detective stories, youâll solve with a little research and persistence. You shouldnât get frustrated.
Remember that the narrator of the difficult âStencilizedâ chapters is Herbert Stencil, himself. Stencil, a contemporary of Benny Profane and the whole sick crew, is on an obsessive quest in search of the mysterious âVâ. Vâs transition throughout the novel loosely parallels Britainâs transition through the industrial revolution into 19th century. Transitioning from a virtuous, Victorian Empire bringing the Christ-powered light of the civilized world to the darkest depths of Africa with unquestioned protestant purpose⌠to a nation in a crisis of faith⌠a nation trying to reconcile protestant purpose with technological progress after bearing witness to the mass-produced mechanized death of The Great War.
Stencilâs obsession with âVâ began after reading his late fatherâs journals. His father, Sidney Stencil, was by profession a British spy who journaled his clandestine involvement in diplomatic crises in various international cities over the course of his career. Each of the âStencilizedâ chapters are set during one of these historical diplomatic crises. These chapters are a story of a story of a story. Pynchon provides the words. Herbert Stencil provides the voice. Sydney Stencil provides the source material. There are layers to the narrative. Itâs complicated.
Chapter 3 is especially complex from a narrative standpoint.
The chapter is divided into eight parts. Each part is told from the perspective of a different person (unspecified in the final 8th part) as imagined by Stencil with clear fabrications influenced from well-known works of literature. The narrator of the eigth and final section is unspecified, as if Stencil is imaging himself watching a movie fabricated in his mind from his fatherâs journals taking inspiration from books heâs read and biased by outcomes he hopes for. An unreliable narrator delivers a convoluted story from eight perspectives.
Here's my take on the ending of Chapter 3âs âplotâ. Itâs essential a spy (Porpentine/Goodfellow, British aligned) vs. spy (Lepsius, German/Bongo-Shaftsbury, French aligned) conflict in a British Egypt. Sydney Stencil is involved with the British intelligence team. Earlier in the chapter, itâs hinted that there may be an assassination attempt on a prominent British diplomat prior to the impeding Fashoda conflict.
Through the lens of an unspecified narrator, at the end of Chapter 3 we witness Bongo-Shaftsbury (French spy team) murdering Porpentine (Sydney Stencilâs British spy team) at the Cairo Opera house.
I think it went like this: shortly after Victoria Wren (V.) left the theater with Goodfellow (British spy), Porpentine (British spy) foils the French spy teamâs assassination attempt on a British Diplomat. Porpentine subsequently gets involved in struggle with Lepsius and then Bongo-Shaftsbury kills Porpentine.
Pynchon is intentionally making these chapters confusing and difficult. He is making a point, but he doesnât want it to be obvious. The answer is found in the work of Argentinean author, Jorge Luis Borges.
His short story, Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius, is likely a major inspiration for Pynchonâs V. Itâs extremely helpful for âgettingâ V. or at least asking the right questions when reading V.
We have a letter from Pynchon documenting his âBorges kickâ while writing V. and his debut novel is almost certainly inspired by Borgesâ story. I wonât summarize the whole story, but itâs essential pre-reading and re-reading for anyone trying to tackle V.
âBioy Casares had come to dinner at my (Borgesâ) that evening, and we had lost all track of time in a vast debate over the way one might go about composing a first-person novel whose narrator would omit or distort things and engage in all sorts of contradictions, so that a few of the bookâs readers-a very few-might divine the horrifying or banal truth. We discovered (very late at night such a discovery is inevitable) that there is something monstrous about mirrors.â â Borges, Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius
Pynchon through his narrative structure plays with the reader. He gives us unsolvable complex, cryptic plots with mysteries unsolvable. Heâs basically fucking with us. I think his main target is a big one: the Christian Church.
With Malta, Pynchon associates Sydney Stencil with Paul (the single person that wrote most of the Bibleâs New Testament). Sydney doesnât record everything (facts left out of source material), Paul likely left things out. Herbert Stencil changes portions of Sydneyâs story according to his hopes for how things will be in the future and in a way that provides order to his ideology. Paulâs writings have been translated and re-translated and interpreted and re-interpreted by the Christian Church. There are also references to Gnosticism and other heretical Christian sects that were suppressed by the early Christian Church.
Remember:

Is Pynchon a secret society trying to take down the establishment: Christianity in V., CIA and corporations in Gravityâs Rainbow? Did Ginsburg and Burroughs run into Borges during their hallucinogenic journey to South America and come up with Pynchon (a name stolen from Puritan ancestry and Hawthorneâs House of Seven Gables)? Was that note from Pynchon about his âBorges kickâ a plant for Pynchonâs world to slowly invade reality. Hronir?

i (16m) have no idea if this is a genuine concern, or if iâm just overthinking everything and being unnecessarily stressed. but i feel like ever since 2019 iâve been getting up in the morning and reading about yet another global disaster, and nothing is getting better.
i feel like with everything going wrong with the world, i, and this entire generation, have little to no chance of turning anything around. collectively, we have ruined this planet for us all, especially the new generation. not enough is being done.
corrupt countries, dangerous political leaders, weapons, terrorism, natural disasters, global warming, the housing crisis, covid, job shortages, inflation, whatever the hell the US is up to, and now el niĂąo. it felt like only a few years ago everything was okay, and now itâs all going to shit.
i feel like the modern world as we know it is doomed to fail, and i think iâll be around to see it. i donât think iâll ever have the chance to live an adult life, to get married, have kids, just enjoy my fucking life. thereâs too much to worry about.
but who am i to know? iâm a 16 year old boy, i know nothing about the world or how it works. iâm just worried that iâll never live to learn it. i donât want to see the world end.
am i just being an emotional teen or is this a genuine concern?
