INTRO

You've been logging in as an ordinary user at your server, yet you're probably aware that root is the power user on a Linux system. This administrative or "superuser" account, is all powerful - and a typo in a command could potentially cripple your server. As a sysadmin you're typically working on systems that are both important and remote, so avoiding such mistakes is A Very Good Idea.
On many older production systems all sysadmins login as “root”, but it’s now common Best Practice to discourage or disallow login directly by root - and instead to give specified trusted users the permission to run root-only commands via the sudo command.
This is the way that your server has been set-up, with your “ordinary” login given the ability to run any root-only command - but only if you precede it with sudo.
(Normally on an Ubuntu system this will ask you to re-confirm your identity with your password. However, the standard AWS Ubuntu Server image does not prompt for a password).

YOUR TASKS TODAY:

• Use the links in the "Resources" section below to understand how sudo works
• Use ls -l to check the permissions of /etc/shadow - notice that only root has any access. Can you use cat, less or nano to view it?
• This file is where the hashed passwords are kept. It is a prime target for intruders - who aim to grab it and use offline password crackers to discover the passwords.
• Now try with sudo, e.g. sudo less /etc/shadow
• Test running the reboot command, and then via sudo (i.e. sudo reboot)

Once you've reconnected back:

• Use the uptime command to confirm that your server did actually fully restart
• Test fully “becoming root” by the command sudo -i This can be handy if you have a series of commands to do "as root". Note the change to your prompt.
• Type exit or logout to get back to your own normal “support” login.
• Use less to view the file /valog/auth.log, where any use of sudo is logged
• You could "filter" this by typing: grep "sudo" /valog/auth.log

If you wish to, you can now rename your server. Traditionally you would do this by editing two files, /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts and then rebooting - but the more modern, and recommended, way is to use the hostnamectl command; like this:
sudo hostnamectl set-hostname mylittlecloudbox
No reboot is required.
For a cloud server, you might find that the hostname changes after a reboot. To prevent this, edit /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg and change the "preserve_hostname" line to read:
preserve_hostname: true
You might also consider changing the timezone your server uses. By default this is likely to be UTC (i.e. GMT) - which is pretty appropriate for a worldwide fleet of servers. You could also set it to the zone the server is in, or where you and your headquarters are. For a company this is a decision not to be taken lightly, but for now you can simply change as you please!
First check the current setting with:
timedatectl
Then get a a list of available timezones:
timedatectl list-timezones
And finally select one, like this:
sudo timedatectl set-timezone Australia/Sydney
Confirm:
timedatectl
The major practical effects of this are (1) the timing of scheduled tasks, and (2) the timestamping of the logs files kept under /valog. If you make a change, there will naturally be a "jump" in the dates and time recorded.

WRAP

As a Linux sysadmin you may be working on client or custom systems where you have little control, and many of these will default to doing everything as root. You need to be able to safely work on such systems - where your only protection is to double check before pressing Enter.
On the other hand, for any systems where you have full control, setting up a "normal" account for yourself (and any co-admins) with permission to run sudo is recommended. While this is standard with Ubuntu, it's also easy to configure with other popular server distros such as Debian, CentOS and RHEL.

A NOTE ON "HARDENING"

Your server is protected by the fact that its security updates are up to date, and that you've set Long Strong Unique passwords - or are using public keys. While exposed to the world, and very likely under continuous attack, it should be perfectly secure. Next week we'll look at how we can view those attacks, but for now it's simply important to state that while it's OK to read up on "SSH hardening", things such as changing the default port and fail2ban are unnecessary and unhelpful when we're trying to learn - and you are perfectly safe without them.

J & J are both older than me, but I feel like I’m no longer the target demo. I think this was solidified when they said UUP live will be a bunch of 20-something’s, which is semi-annoying considering I already have tickets.

I've posted to this subreddit not too long ago and briefly mentioned this in my first post of a different matter, however I wanted to make a full post for this situation as well.
For starters, I live in Florida. I was kicked out from my dad/stepmom's over a year ago and have been staying with my mom in the meantime. I have run into issues because she refuses to allow me to be on the lease of any places she rents, refuses to let me change my address, and I'm not allowed to receive mail.
However that's not the main concern and merely giving some background context.
We've been staying at a new place for a little over half a year now. About 7 months. My mom was recommended to this landlord by a customer she works for so we rented this place by word of mouth as opposed to going through professional rent companies. She's an older lady, at least 60+ years old we'd guess, who owns the quadplex we stay at.
This landlord however has proven to be ridiculously unprofessional, and mentally ill I'd argue personally. Mostly in the fact that she shows up unannounced and ends up talking/complaining about the other tenants who live in the same small quadplex we're in. My mom has shut her down for it because she has said extremely personal stuff about these people, their situations, and things that no stranger should know about them. She tends to be very back and forth between being nice to suddenly lashing out and then apologizing afterwards. We have also caught her in lies and she tends to manipulate and guilt trip.
She also has not properly updated the street address so our address is technically incorrect no matter what we use.
Recently however, she has been causing problems about me staying here. Originally, she mentioned my mom could have a roommate, and even offered one for her. My mom did mention I would be staying and helping pay for things and got a verbal approval by the landlord. I was never put on the lease, and there has been no mention that I needed to be on it.
The lease was written by an attorney who supposedly works for her. Originally, the landlord wanted to write a short and simple lease herself, but then we had to wait because she decided to get a lawyer to write it instead. It mentions that family can live here, but also mentions that people staying must have prior written consent from the landlord.
Now, hindsight is 20/20. The landlord has acknowledged even in texts that she did give verbal approval towards me staying here, but we should've gotten it in writing obviously.
Within the past few months or so, she has sent my mom texts urging us to find another place and asking if we've found somewhere else to go yet, which my mom believes to be harassment. Fairly certain these began when my mom confronted her about coming by unannounced and talking about other tenants which made my mom uncomfortable and made her want to leave. It had nothing to do with me being here or due to eviction notices as far as I know.
We still have several months left on our lease, and yesterday my mom was served a seven day notice with cure. They want us to talk to the landlord's lawyer about our "violations" about me staying here without written approval or else they will follow up with an eviction notice. Neither of us wish to talk to her lawyer and my mom is currently getting her own lawyer. She also went to police to file a complaint against her today.
Some people in her circle seem to agree that some of the stuff she has done is illegal and may count as harassment. Some mention it's possible she's trying to force us out to move someone else in. And they have also urged us to stay unless properly evicted due to the fact she might come after us for money for breaking the lease if we do try to leave.
I apologize if this is confusing to read, it's a lot. I might go back and edit later.
But this whole situation has been sketchy and weird and I just wanted to see what anyone on here might have to say about it who knows better than we do. Thanks in advance.

I’m waiting to hear back from a job offer right now. Exactly one year ago I got a ticket for failure to obey a traffic sign and elected to go to driving school. I failed to attend driving school like an idiot and didn’t receive a letter about the additional fine later, causing my license to be unknowingly suspended for a few months. I got it sorted out and my license has been valid for several months now. Other than this ticket and later suspension my record is squeaky clean. Would a small companies insurance policy still be able to approve me for driving on the job despite this? I’m worried the job offer might get rescinded. I’m located in central FL and the job wouldn’t require a lot of driving.

Not here to start a fight, and definitely not here to target those who choose a vegan lifestyle or otherwise limit their meat consumption etc. (especially for reasons besides zerowaste). This is to spread awareness and accuracy!
Here are some things you should consider, to balance out the anti- animal product propaganda you will see a lot in our eco friendly circles.

1. Ruminants and Methane - Cows (ruminants) are supposed to produce lots of methane right? They're harming the climate? Well, no. Ruminants have existed on this planet as long as we have, and in the past in far greater numbers. They have always been a natural part of the *methane cycle*. The methane they "produce" for one comes from what they eat, it is not adding anything to the atmosphere in any real sense. And again, as animals they are doing what they need to be doing in the most efficient way possible, as they have forever!
2. Animals and Water Waste - Statistics that tell you how many gallons of water it took to produce a hamburger are trying to scare you. All of these calculations actually INCLUDE rainwater! You know, rainwater which will fall anyway, and is half the time serving the purpose of growing plants for the animals to eat. The logic goes that because we are growing the food that our food will eat, it would be more efficient if we ate the animals' food instead of animals. But unfortunately this is misleading as well, and brings me to the next point.
3. Recycling Waste Products with Animals - The agriculture industry produces a lot of inedible waste (plant shells, corn husks, etc.), but the good news is ruminants, who have more stomachs than we have, can digest this waste! Over 90% of all ruminant feed is NON-HUMAN EDIBLE. This is how so many crop byproducts are upcycled. Plant and animal agriculture are an ecosystem which is so efficient when it works in tandem.
4. Animals and Land Waste - Ruminants don't take away land that could be used for plant products. "Marginal land" is land where crops CANNOT be grown, whether it be the weather, the terrain, poor soil, or otherwise. Without animals, this land couldn't be used for whole food production. It's not being hoarded from crops. And this marginal land is 2/3 of our agricultural land worldwide.
5. Methane Production from Food Waste - Do you know what *is* the source of added methane for our planet? Decomposing organic matter. And fruits and vegetables are by far the biggest contributors to food waste compared with animal products. So if your concern is sustainability and a healthy planet, don't just go and buy the shiny new milk alternative. Aim for zero waste above all :)

So my puppy is 3 months, she used to have no problems when I would feed her. However lately she has been weird about her food, whenever I put it down she will sniff it and walk away. I haven’t changed anything and the portions I am giving her were approved by my vet (we just had a checkup). It seems like I have to coax her to eat or put her in her crate so she can’t walk away. I know it’s not tummy issues either because whenever I am preparing her food she gets excited and seems eager to eat. She is also interested in the older dogs food (don’t worry she only gets her puppy food). Wondering if anyone has any advice or if anything similar has happened with their puppy.

I was wrongly advised in a weak emotional moment that to do masters by my sisters post taking divorce.
I really thought masters will be Bright future and wanted to risk it At that time took personal loan of 55Lakhs ie 66k$ at 11% interest as educational loan didnt get approved.
I discussed with my sister and brother that EMI will start right away and its 1L per month for 2 years its 24Lakhs ie 28k emi per month
Fees is 30Lakhs expenses is 15L and I onboarded that plan thinking if i dont get job i l be back to India and pay PL emi of 1L per month by fetching atlesst 1.5L per month job

And why did I listen to her? I am super angry with her and guilty for doing this but still surviving

Back story. My sister accidentally ran over my nephew killing him instantly a few years back and it changed our lives forever. All of us have gone to therapy of some sort and I am still in it dealing with many life changing issues since. I don’t consider myself better than any of them I just knew and know my journey in healing our past and present wounds are far from over. However, my sister who lost her son quit therapy and has solely relied being a born again Christian and believes she is far better off than us and believes we will not be going to heaven because we don’t practice her beliefs. If we go to a unity church she says that’s not a real church. Most things she listens to is from YouTube mainly fire and brimstone talk. She has ruined so many close relationships with her anger as she lashes out at everyone. She was never the easiest person to get along with but now it’s even made her behavior worse and everyone is afraid to upset her in some fore. This past Christmas she flipped out on 2 of my siblings and attempted suicide. Everything in her immediate family is very secretive as to keep up appearances. While she was in the hospital for a few days one of my siblings told us not to contact her. I decided it was time to write the letter everyone was scared to write. I live across the untied states so going to see her wasn’t an option. I got all of my siblings approval and our parents to write the letter. It strictly came from me and no one else. I didn’t mention names of those who voiced concerns about her mental health but I stated in the beginning of the letter that I sent it to all of our siblings including her husband and our parents. I did this so there wasn’t any room for misinterpretation. Everyone but one read the letter but I still had their support in writing it. Well once the message was sent all hell broke loose. My BIL basically condemned me for not speaking to them in person and if anything was needed to be stated further we could go through him. The sibling who stated they supported me but wouldn’t read the letter no longer speaks to me or 2 other siblings and only talks with the sister her lost her baby. The sister who lost her baby no longer speaks to me (which I expected) I told my sister in the letter I will always be in her corner even if she felt like I wasn’t needed in her life. My other 2 siblings don’t speak to her anymore since she went off on them. So there are the three of us standing in solidarity and the other two standing in solidarity with each other. My parents are just respecting our space/grief whatever you want to call it as they know they can’t change anything. My letter was tough love. It expressed my love for her and wanting her to live an life she is deserving of. I didn’t loose my child nor do I claim to know how it feels. But I’ve lost my sister and I lost my nephew and I’ve lost the life we all once had. I never told her I understand. I never told her to get over it and move on. I told her I don’t know how to help or what to say or even how to be there physically, emotionally and mentally for her because no matter how big or how small we try it’s never ever good enough. I miss my siblings so much but not realizing it at the time I was very much in a toxic relationship with the two not speaking to me. My life seems less heavy and I don’t have this guilt of not getting their approval or feeling obligated to constantly put myself in a situation that isn’t healthy for me or my immediate family. My sisters attempt was a cry for help, but now those individuals are saying it was a complete misunderstanding of the events that occurred. Is it when a doctor came to the house decided she needed to be seen? They their were suicide letters saying her family deserved better than her as a wife and mom? The hospital scanned her letters into her file and released her with a signed promise to attend a 1 weeks worth of therapy. I love all my siblings so much and I am willing to loose them but I am not willing to let one of them die without telling them how much they are loved and how much they are worth living. I get that letters or text messages are never easy since how tones are not heard. I also put that. I have debated and debated to ask this but I’m having a sad day missing them and talking to them. Talking with my therapist has helped so much my my pain and anxiety over this is really creeping in. I know I know I know they are NOT at all ready to talk and I am respecting this is as I am not ready to speak to them. There is so much history in our past to explain everything. Nothing in our lives have been easy. Our birth mom is a drunk and drug user, so the mother I posted above is our step mom and our parents are divorced and my step mom became my adopted mom when I was 30 years old. So you see it’s complicated. But even so in my letter I told my sister you would never ever let me go without fighting for me and that’s what I am doing. I just needed to let my heart cry. Thank you. Please be kind. This is really hard.

A bit of a background, i am 31M.
Last year i decided to change my life after experiencing Covid right after my birthday. The experience scared me straight to get my health in check. For my entire life i have always been obese. my highest weight was 364 lbs, very sedentary, on the verge of being diabetic(a1c was 6.2), not a single care about my health at all until covid hit in the middle of summer. After I recovered I decided to go on walks, only drinking water, started doing intermitting fasting and cutting back on meal sizes. it wasn't hard for me to make the changes because of what happened but all was being done out of fear. I was running on pure self preservation I wasn't in a healthy mental state through it all. I have lost about well over 50 pounds in that period and for the last few months have stagnated around 306 lbs. I tried to be less tough on myself since i knew anxiety was getting to me making my blood pressure be at high levels a lot. Fast forward to last week on monday. I started to feel very tense in my chest and it went away after a few mins but i wanted to be sure so i checked my blood pressure and it was 189/99, it stayed that high for 30 mins so i went to the er. it was still high there so they gave a blood pressure med and let me go home after it was more ok, gave me a prescription for Losartan 100mg. I had a follow up appointment 2 days after the er visit. That is when i told him what was going on and He suggested to me to continue taking the Losartan and he told he was also going to prescribe to me Mounjaro. I didn't know what this was at this point and was very skeptical about it since I know how much of a sham weight loss medications have been previously and really i thought i can do this without doing surgery or meds. Doc reassured me and told me the risks, when i got how i looked into and look into the subreddits and how no one has gotten those serious risks so i felt more comfortable about taking it. Fast forward to today, I got approved from my insurance to cover all for the medication but it wasn't for Mounjaro it is for this, Wegovy. I was confused and called my pharmacy, they told me they have discontinue Mounjaro. so i got some information about Wegovy and from my understanding it seems to work like Mounjaro? hopefully someone here can help me get a bit more clarification.
I am being started on .25mg of Wegovy. I was told to expect nauseas hopefully i don't feel it, i hate the feeling. Currently at 310 lbs, my goal is to be achieve going below 200 lbs. I am gonna try to keep of record for when i hit milestones, i am thinking every 25th pound lost? Hopefully one day i can be at 175 or whatever it is recommended for my height 5.8 ft and hopefully be free from anxiety.

My work is vague about whether we should buy our own tools. We can either buy equipment ourselves, or we can apply through the office beurocracy and they would likely be approved to be purchased by the company (but it can be a hassle to justify)
For certain tools that I needed quickly or I thought unlikely to be approved, I just bought those tools myself. I didn't even try to apply through the company process. Can I claim these expenses on tax? It does seem somewhat unethical to me but I can't find anything against it in the rules

I’m looking for a reasonably affordable SUV for my wife to primarily drive. She stays home with my 2 year old son, so he will be riding in there with her a lot. We generally buy Fords, and I’m not against buying one here, but I noticed that the Edge, the Ford that most closely matches our requirements, is really expensive at least in our area. I put $35,000 but would really prefer to spend more like $30,000 if I can. , although I’m pre-approved to go up to $40,000. I want the following:

• Safe and reliable
  
• Luxury feel, if possible
  
• Ample leg room, but only 5 seats/2 rows preferred. I’d also like good leg room in both the front and the back so I (6’3”) am able to sit in the back if needed.
  
• Remote start
  
• Apple CarPlay, preferably over Bluetooth with wireless connection supported and wireless charging
  
• Decent gas mileage
  
• No subscription crap, if possible. I don’t want to have to pay a monthly fee to use hardware that’s already present in my car like heated seats or remote start.
  
• I am open to leasing or buying if the price is right, but prefer buying, all other things being equal.
  
• Air cooled seats are a plus but not required
