This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 46%. (I'm a bot)
Underscoring the longtime instability of the Haitian government, the sentencing came the same day that the State Department announced sanctions against Laurent Lamothe, a prime minister under former President Michel Martelly, over allegations that Mr. Lamothe misappropriated for private gain at least $60 million from the Haitian government's PetroCaribe investment fund.
President Jovenel Moïse was killed on July 7, 2021, in an attack at his private residence on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince.
Murder Investigation: The United States, which assumed a leading role in investigating the death, has charged a former Colombian commando, a Haitian businessman and several other men, including three Americans, with the assassination.
He also "Provided funding to bribe certain Haitian officials who were responsible for providing security" for Mr. Moïse, according to the proffer, so the assassins could "Obtain access" to the president.
Mr. Moïse, 53, died after being shot 12 times when a team of Spanish-speaking commandos stormed his home outside the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, in July 2021.
Continue reading the main story Prosecutors say the plot against Mr. Moïse evolved over time, from an audacious plan to kidnap the Haitian president and escape the country via airplane to the assassination that was ultimately carried out.

2023.06.03 06:16 Used-Insect-757 Did Gandhi really fast to give 55 crores to Pakistan?

Did Gandhi really fast to give 55 crores to Pakistan?
Answer:
No, Gandhi didn't gift 55 crores to Pakistan. Many such myths are being spread by the RW ecosystem to demonize Gandhi as a pro-Muslim appeaser. But according to the terms of partition, along with the division of land, even the assets will be divided. Now, to divide the money - a six-member committee was created to decide how the money would split. The committee then decided that out of 400 crores of assets presented by RBI at that time, 325 crores will remain in India and 75 crores would be given to Pakistan. It was also decided that until 1948, the Reserve Bank of India would work as a national bank for both India and Pakistan.

RBI used to print currency for Pakistan with the 'govt of Pakistan' tag on the currency
Important point:
  • Gandhi wasn't handling the committee and had no role in splitting assets.
  • This was an international agreement and this agreement was done by 2 independent countries as per international rules where the UN and other international organizations were involved.
The Government of India first gave 20 crores on 14th August 1947 [the day when Pakistan was formed] and the remaining would be progressively paid in installments. But then the first India-Pakistan war happened in October 1947 and it continued until January 1949. The government now changed its mind and decided to not give the remaining 55 crore worth of assets to Pakistan until the kashmir issue isn't resolved. The Pakistani government threatened to take India to the International Court of Justice if it didn't pay the remaining assets.
Now, hypothetically had Pakistan gone to ICJ and put a case on India, then there was 95% chance that ICJ would have ruled in Pakistan's favor since according to the 6-committee agreement, India had signed the agreement to give a sum total of 75 crore to Pakistan. Had that happened India would be humiliated in front of the world; if India couldn't fulfill this agreement it signed then how can other countries trust India when multiple agreements between India and other countries are signed in the future? Many countries would have been more reluctant to sign any agreements with India in the future. This is why Gandhi was of the opinion that India should give 55 crores to Pakistan, but he didn't force or compel Nehru/Patel to give 55 crores, he just had that opinion.
Regarding Fasting by Gandhi:
Gandhiji's picture in the fast that started on 12th January
In September 1947, Mahatma Gandhi reached Delhi from Calcutta to go to Punjab. Fierce Hindu-Muslim riots were going on in Delhi at that time. Vallabh Bhai Patel told Gandhi about the deteriorating conditions of Delhi. Gandhi immediately postponed the decision to go to Punjab and decided to stay in Delhi and go to Punjab after peace is established there.
When the situation in Delhi did not come under control even after several attempts, on January 12, 1948, 78-year-old Gandhi decided to go on a fast. He sat on a fast against these riots. In the prayer meeting on the evening of 12th January, he talked about peace between the people of both religions. Even in the prayer meeting on January 13th, Gandhi did not make any mention of Pakistan and Rs 55 crore. On January 15th, a journalist asked him the reason for this fast. Even in answer to this question, Gandhi did not make any mention of Rs 55 crore to be given to Pakistan. Giving money to Pakistan was also not included in the assurances given to Gandhi by the committee formed to end Gandhi's fast. There is no mention of Gandhiji's demand to give Rs 55 crore to Pakistan even in the press notes issued by the Government of India at that time.
The government of India paid 55 crores to Pakistan on the 16th of January 1948 and the fasting of Gandhi continued until the 19th, this shows that Gandhi didn't fast for 55 crores but for stopping Hindu-Muslim riots in Delhi.

I made it to my 2 year mark despite the texas government trying to take my t. It took me a lot to get on t, some might say I’m a rare case especially in texas. I’m 16 years old and I match in with the other boys my age. It’s the age where me and the other guys in my classes are growing beards and I have a mustache and goatee to show off to them (multiple cis guys have complimented my beard!!) but yeah today June 2nd marks my 2nd year of testosterone. It was only a milestone in my transition.

2023.06.03 06:09 Drakolf TftM Councilor Graham- Religion:

It wasn't the first time the proposal was brought up, but it was the first time in a long time had the wherewithal to refuse.
The Adrati Brotherhood was a militantly monotheistic culture that vied for galactic dominance neither through war nor diplomacy. The Human concept of evangelism paled in comparison to their efforts to convert literally every sapient being to their theocratic way of life.
They weren't a threat, of course, they were simply really fucking annoying.
Still, Human Councillor Graham stared at the Adrati Councillor with a look that was a mixture of sheer bafflement and exhaustion as the Adrati proceeded to filibuster. The Council was designed in such a way that anything less than a unanimous decision couldn't pass, it was a necessary bit of bureaucracy that ensured no singular species gained control of the Hedron.
The Adrati took advantage of this, and for the past three days had been filibustering each time ceaselessly, with stamina only a zealot could muster. In spite of the rest of the Council pleading with Graham to approve the tax and just move on with life, Graham refused.
Graham, back on Earth, had been part of the American Republican Reformist Party, which was distinct from the now-defunct 'Grand Old Party', a term which to this day was remarked on with some derision. While the R2P had long since divorced itself from the political party that it shot off from, there were a few tactics it still employed to this day.
"Friends of the Council." The Adrati started.
"Motion to have every species on the Council pay a non-believer tax for every religion they're not part of." Graham spoke. The Adrati was caught off guard by the Human's immediate interruption, had it not aligned with their goals, he would have complained.
"Human Councilor Graham, please explain." The Canician Councilor, Grahim, asked.
"It's simple." Graham replied. "If the Adrati can force the issue of a non-believer tax, so can I." He regarded the Adrati. "You currently demand a ten percent tax for anyone who doesn't believe in your religion, correct?"
"That is correct." The Adrati replied.
"I propose a one percent tax to be paid to any religion, to be waived at any time by a Councillor without need for Council approval." Graham stated. "I am willing to allow the Adrati to keep their ten percent. Is that agreeable, Adrati Councilor Gheiza?"
The Adrati was too caught up in his victory, he fervently nodded.
"Does the rest of the Council agree?"
Grahim stared at Graham for a few moments, then his eyes widened slightly. "I find this proposal agreeable." He said. "I would urge the Council to agree as well."
Humanity had a reputation for lateral thinking and taxes, the rest of the Council, more curious as to what he had planned, agreed. The vote was unanimous, and Gheiza flaunted his victory.
"First and foremost, I would like to waive any and all taxes my fellow Councilors have to pay, except the Adrati." Gheiza froze at the Human's words. "I will now proceed to list off every Human religion on and off the planet Earth. Starting with the East Asien religions, there is Confucionaism, Shinto, Taoism-"
"Wait, Human, what are you-?"
"Do not interrupt the Human Councilor." Grahim said with a (very accurate) wolfish grin. "Continue, Human Councilor Graham."
Graham nodded. "Benzhuism, Bimomism, Chinese Ancestral Worship..." Graham could filibuster like nobody's business, given the chance, and with each religion listed, he pulled up a well-researched and collated page dating back hundreds of years. "Onmyodo, Shugendo, Ainu..." With each religion added onto the list, the Adrati shriveled ever so slightly.
"Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, Buddhism; of which there are several sects such as Mahayana, Tiantai, of which there are several sub-sects..."
Graham hadn't even strayed from East Asia, and had already listed dozens of religions, far more than any other species had developed. Such a fractious species, Humanity had warred over many things, and religion had been a major contender for most destructive, of which the debate over which sport was best was a close second.
"Moving on to the Abrahamic religions, starting with Judaism, the Baha'i faith, Christianity..."
By the point that Graham had listed the hundredth religion, the Council had shifted from amusement, to barely restrained mirth, to concern, and then finally to horror as one percent times one hundred was still one hundred percent, and even then, Graham continued to list more.
"C-Councilor Graham..." Vagraxi Councilor Ressa-Gashari. "You've listed over one hundred religions."
"I have." Graham replied. "I'm not even a fourth of the way through." He regarded the Adrati, who was trembling in his seat. "Adrati Councilor Gheiza, your entire species not only owes Humanity one hundred percent of your profits to Humanity, but you've accrued a debt so massive, the only way you could possibly pay it off is in slavery." The word was uttered casually, but the Council balked at the words.
Humanity despised slavery, it was one of the few things that guaranteed war with them. To hear a Human causally mention it was shocking. "Which is why I am willing to personally revoke that debt, if the Adrati Brotherhood agrees to never demand a non-believer tax on anyone ever again."
"I will comply." Gheiza said softly.
Graham clapped his hands together and smiled. "Excellent. Your understanding is vastly appreciated, I pray to all our myriad gods that we continue forward in peace." He regarded the Council, his expression serious. "Now, we have several days of backlog to go through, I've taken the liberty of collating everything into a handy resource, and request we all convene one week from now to address everything. I request we adjourn."
The request was granted.

2023.06.03 06:06 ElCarvo ¿Egoism = Psychopathy?

Now analyzing a video of some shoplifters made me think: That's supposedly wrong, because that's what I've been conditioned to believe all my life. Abuse of the private property of Others (whether individuals or organizations) is wrong, even if they themselves do not take care of it at all. This made me connect with a police television program from my country, in which in a particular chapter the outcome was that the captured criminal suffered from "Antisocial Personality Disorder". At the moment of the interrogation in which he was caught with irrefutable evidence and understood that he was going to be sentenced, he said something like: "Por qué no iba a quedarme con ese dinero, si lo cuidaba tan poco que pareciera que lo estaba regalando" (Why wasn't I going to keep that money, if she took such little care of it that it seemed like she was giving it away). The officer looked at him with disgust in her facial expression and said "Tú estás enfermo" (You're sick).
My bottom line is that she couldn't give him any objective argument why he shouldn't/couldn't do what he did, they just captured him and forcibly locked him up because they could. I live in Cuba (a state that is a tyranny) and I have seen people jailed with 30-year sentences for simply saying what they think about the Communist Party or government leaders. If the only limit is force, and it doesn't matter if you "follow the law" or not, what's the point?

2023.06.03 06:06 theNobleShadow My combined GE East/West haul!

My combined GE East/West haul!
Long time listener, first time caller!
November last year was my very first trip to GE (and first time back to DL since I was a kid), where I bought the Kylo Ren hilt! Seeing the Falcon up close in person and all the immersive scenery there was a dream come true!
Then in March while in Orlando traveling for work, I had the opportunity to go to Hollywood Studios for a Disney After Hours. Booked the ticket a few weeks beforehand right before they sold out, AND snagged a reservation for Oga’s!
I bought the Reforged Skywalker hilt, blade, and all the other little goodies while I was at East. It was an awesome experience getting to go twice within a few months AND have all that work out so last minute. Must be getting some extra luck from the Sabacc dice I hang from the mirror in my speeder!
My haul may be meager, but it’s a fine beginning to my collection!

2023.06.03 06:06 Mentaltam East Coast USA to TYO - J/F - May 31st 2024

My partner is about to finish her residency and applying to fellowship, so we figured we'd try and get one last trip in before fellowship as this is the last time she'll be able to take off for 2-3 weeks at a time for a while.
I have opened up so many cards to accrue points literally just for this purpose (it did help that we had that wedding last year so I wasn't spending anything I wasn't going to).
So this is the situation, I have 300k MR and 227k MB right now and will have 100K UR by the end of July.
I'm trying to get to get at least J to and from East Coast of the US to TYO.
I looked at ORD, NYC, and IAD for ANA and they all have just 1J/1F open at 9PM EST.
I am willing to fly out of the west coast, I would just prefer east coast since if a flight gets delayed or canceled, there are at least more likely for me to make another flight rather than the west coast to get there. There's not that much wiggle room for the flying out date of 5/31/2024 but a good amount of wiggle room for the return date of mid to mid/late June .
What would be the safest strategy to approach this to get 2?
  1. I just book a J/F round trip ORD on ANA and just hope a when T-14 opens up on the same day?
  2. Try to just book the 2J/F on west coast on ANA? Unsure if this is viable since I only ran across this post for ANA award info a couple of days ago and haven't actually confirmed the 2 seat availability for myself (did not know you could set it to both Japan region and English at the same time). This just worries me a bit since if I transfer my points and I can't make this happen, I would've just lost all of it. Also, I have a question with this strategy, if 2 seats become available for NYC or ORD, how easy is it to change the ticket?
  3. Some other airline/award strategy that I'm unaware of. I considered JAL, but considering I have very little AA points left and none in Alaska Airlines, I didn't think this was the way to go.
Any advice or guidance is appreciated! If I left out anything necessary to facilitate effective evaluation of my situation, I do apologize.

2023.06.03 06:06 dave3111 Government built houses

Government built houses
After WW2 in the UK, the government built a lot of houses as many were destroyed during the war. I don't know the details of who pays and how much etc but I assume that wasn't as important as just getting somewhere for people to live. I believe a lot were prefabricated too and using a government workforce.
Do you think we will get to a point where the Australian Government would use its own workforce (it has tradies in some government agencies, but could mass recruit onto standard government salaries from failing construction companies) to build houses/apartments. I think the answer is no, because it prefers outsourcing and throwing money at a company that says it can solve the problem, but there may be a point when it can't be given to a for-profit company. For example, government infrastructure being built may not profit from sale or use (ie road tolls) but through more economic activity, it can be profitable in the long term holistically, which a private company only involved in the construction cannot benefit from. A government lead taskforce could rezone, build to a quality standard and develop a new suburb wherever it wanted if it saw urgent need.
Some related graphs I thought were interesting, as we tend to think of Australia as a growing population so you can't compare 50 years ago to now.

Who is building houses
House price to Salary

How much is getting built
Regarding the 2nd graph if you are interested in why it was so high to start with
It may only be of historic curiosity, but it is interesting that house prices were even more expensive in the latter half of the 19th century. They then went on a multi-decade downtrend relative to earnings. This only bottomed out after World War I.
There are three important drivers of this: more houses, smaller houses, and rising incomes.
  • More houses: There was a more than doubling in the stock of housing in England, Wales and Scotland between 1851 and 1911. It rose from 3.8 million to 8.9 million houses – for reference, today it stands at more than 28 million.
  • Smaller houses: Houses built before 1850 were significantly larger than those built after. Prior to 1850, the average house in England and Wales had a plot size of 913 square metres but houses built in the next 50 years had an average plot size of only 268 square metres. This reflected both a shift in construction towards smaller types of housing (e.g. a shift away from detached houses towards terraces) and a downshift in the average size of houses within each category. For example, the average plot size for a pre-1850 terrace was 278 square metres but that fell to 147 square metres for those built between 1850 and 1899.
  • Higher incomes: While average house prices fell by 23% between 1845 and 1911 (-0.4% a year), due in part to the two factors above, earnings rose by 90% over the same period (+1.1% a year).

2023.06.03 06:05 Atom_101 Still run after a PhD or give up?

This is going to be yet another "woe is me" story. Feel free to skip.
I graduated with CS undergrad degree from a top Uni in India in 2021. My research interest is in ML which is super competitive and I didn't have much in the form of a profile except 2 pubs in Indian conferences. So I spent the next ~1.5 years beefing up my resume. I took up a full-time job at a startup while also working remotely as a research assistant. During this period I was easily working 80hr weeks, and was extremely burnt out. But it all paid off when I got a Neurips pub. I thought that with 3 pubs, with one of them in Neurips, and 3 more papers under review, I will easily get a PhD. Armed with this confidence, I left my job in November and started sending out applications.
Reality hit in January when I got a single interview out of my 11 applications. And that single interview was from my undergrad thesis advisor at Harvard, so I only got it because he knew me (he was also one of my LoR writers). Unfortunately he had a single opening and almost 200 applicants (got to know this from a postdoc at the lab), and I didn't get through. By March I had 11/11 rejects, with $1000+ down the drain.
I didn't want to get another job, so I thought, I will try again after improving my profile for a year. Now the bulk of my application is already set in stone. My GPA is kind of low (8.72/10), can't fix that anymore. My LoR writers will be the same, can't change that. The only thing I can do in a year is add more papers, so that's where I focused my efforts. Back in November, when I had quit my job, I started working with LAION, an open source research group on discord, run by volunteer researchers. I became one of the core contributors for one project and that led to another paper submitted to Neurips this year. In the meantime, out of my 3 under review papers, 1 got accepted to another top conference. Apart from this, I also got an ex-postdoc from my Harvard lab, who is now a Professor, to give me an RA contract.
For my open-source project I was working with a postdoc at Princeton. He said that for his PhD (he is from a bio background) he met with all his potential PIs beforehand and recommended me to reach out to profs as well. Now I had heard this advice before but didn't really pay heed to it because most CS profs have it clearly mentioned on their profiles to not contact them regarding admissions. The way around this is to apparently meet them at conferences, but that is prohibitively expensive for me (going to Neurips would have cost me $2500 when factoring in visa+flight+living costs). Since the Fall '24 deadline is quite a bit away, I thought I would reach out to potential PIs anyway and offer to be an RA at their labs, while clearly mentioning my intent to do a PhD with them. Basically giving PIs an option to try me for ~6 months before committing... except I got 0 responses from my cold emails. But hey, you only need one admit right? So I asked the Princeton postdoc about his lab. He said that the lab was indeed looking for PhDs and asked me to email his Prof with my interests and details about our previous work together. But, my mail was met with a one liner response asking me to apply directly to CS/ECE PhD programs.
It is now beginning to set in that literally nothing will change for me by the end of this year, except having 1-2 more papers, meaning the upcoming application cycle will not be any different. Cold mails are a shot in the dark, getting an answer is like winning a lottery. But even with warm intros, which take months of (unpaid) work to setup, I am being told to fuck off.
So here I am, burnt out, kinda depressed and with no sense of direction, coming to terms with the possibility that academia may not be for me. On top of that my field keeps moving at an unforgiving pace. Oh you are doing self-supervised learning? Diffusion models are the new cool thing. You mastered diffusion models? Too bad we moved on to LLMs. I am dreading writing a new SoP for this year. You are expected to portray a happy and hopeful image in SoPs, how you are going to change the world with your research... I am way too jaded to pull that off. I could also apply to lower tier colleges, but I really need an EB1-B visa after I graduate and for that you have to prove to the US Government that you are "an extraordinary individual". Kind of hard to do if you are going to a low-tier college. Also after the amount of work I put in, I really don't want to apply to Profs who have fewer pubs than I have. At that point it might be better to sell my soul go back into industry. At least I will have money.

2023.06.03 06:05 manlymatt83 Savings account as primary account

Now that the Government has suspended Regulation D indefinitely (https://www.federalreserve.gov/supervis ... stions.htm) -- this is the regulation that used to limit withdrawals to 6 per month on savings accounts -- I'm wondering if banks encouraging use of savings accounts as primary accounts will become more popular over the next few years.
M1 Finance seems to already be doing this with their 5% savings account with up to 5 million in FDIC insurance and Unlimited transactions.
If you think about it, the only benefit checking accounts offer are debit cards and check, neither which apply to many people these days. I haven't written a check in ages, and I don't use debit cards as I prefer responsible use of credit card points. Pretty sure you can attach a good old ATM card to a savings account, so banks who want to offer ATM access and/or ATM refunds will still be able to do so (albeit without a debit card).
I'm actually thinking of switching my primary account to M1's savings account for both direct deposit and ACH withdrawal of bills. I have about ~10 bills per month when all is said and done. I know the Fidelity CMA and/or brokerage account have similar features if you enable checks, debit card, etc. but for me, the interface makes it really challenging to filter out certain transactions.
Curious what others think. Is anyone planning on using their M1 savings account as their primary "checking" account?

I am planning to get my hair done by a hairdresser in about 2 months, and was wondering what people think would look good.
History of my (half east-asian) hair (note that I did all bleaching and dying myself. Yes, I know that’s stupid).
I started bleaching my hair when I was 12. It was just streaks and stuff back then. When I was 13-15 I had 1/4th of my hair bleached and then dyed bright red. 15-16 I bleached the entirety of my hair and then dyed it red. But I let the dye wash out over time and I was blonde in the end. I realised my hair was damaged and was falling out, so I shaved all the blonde hair off, which happened in late January of this year. I haven’t done any chemical treatments (dye, bleach, perm, etc) since then and I’ve only cut my fringe slightly a while ago. My hair feels healthier, but I am staying cautious.
I wash my hair daily as if I don’t, it gets very oily and smelly (I have spoken to hairdressers, and they confirm that I am doing the right thing for my hair). I come from a family of hairdressers but I was very reckless in the past when it came to my hair.

2023.06.03 05:58 DependentRip2314 How does BAH work for married members overseas?

I recently got married and will be pcsing soon. My wife has to settle a few family affairs before moving with me so I want to know how does the BAH situation work?
Will I receive BAH in order to set up a household for us? Does it start from the day we got married… if so what zip code would I start it for since my wife won’t be moving with me for a few months.
I read this
“A member with dependents (except for a member paying child support) serving an unaccompanied overseas tour, is eligible for BAH at the with-dependent rate, based on the dependent's U.S. residence zip code, plus Family Separation Allowance (FSH) at the OCONUS PDS, if the member is not provided Government housing overseas.” But It doesn’t say when would my BAH start or if I would even be eligible since I don’t PCS for another few months and since she won’t be moving with me immediately.
