Vive Wireless Tips (blue screens/dropped frames/latencies) [RESOLVED]

2023.05.31 19:04 BrutalAttis Vive Wireless Tips (blue screens/dropped frames/latencies) [RESOLVED]

(I could not crosspost here from Vive, but wanted to share here too)
Just wanted to give back to the community as a thank you for all the people modifying games like FO4VSkyrimVR that I love so much.
I recently upgraded my system and ran into some typical Vive Wireless and other common VR issues.
Like many I got frustrated with blue screen issues. I think it is quite resolvable unless a person truly has faulty hardware.
My wireless experience is now amazing and hoping some of my tips my help others with wireless issue.
Troubleshooting Tips:
Check for the obvious off first:
  1. Update MB, VR hardware etc. firmware/bios.
  2. Update GPU, VR, MB hardware drivers.
fpsVR is good at helping determine in real time GPU or CPU frame timings. (or other free options)
A) CPU frame times:
CPU Frametime example issue
CPU frame time issues are a much larger issue compared to GPU frame issues. If your game is getting constant CPU frame time spikes either your CPU is underpowered, has RAM speed (maybe XMP not enabled), or weird P/E core issues. If your CPU often spikes frame time then no amount of GPU will help you get a smooth VR experience (and some games are worse offenders than others: FO4VR (single core), SkyrimVR and DCS etc.)
B) GPU frame time issues:
GPU Frametime example issue
Good news here is that you have options. Drop GPU in game settings. Drop rendering resolutions etc. Anytime you can make your GPU render fast enough to prevent GPU frame time within your headset refresh rate zone (or to a point that you can live with it). First dial settings down, then add back after all other issues are resolved.
C) Marching of the dreaded purple line on GPU frame time chart or what feels like a micro stutter:
Example Purple Line on GPU Frametime Chart
Often caused by background monitoring processes like Corsair (suxs), MSI etc. You can write a .bat script that can be run before each VR session. Kill all unnecessary processes. Locate by looking at TaskManager > Details > Sort by CPU or Memory usage. Read up dont kill stop critical MS OS processes. Some processes be so embedded that it's best to uninstall them altogether.
taskkill /IM "exact_exe_name.exe" /F
Ex: taskkill /IM "WhatsApp.exe" /F
Stop all unnecessary services. Locate by looking at TaskManager > Services > Sort by Status and look for Running. Read up dont kill stop critical MS OS services.
net stop "exact service name"
Ex: net stop "ROG Live Service"
Purple lines are normal during major CPU/HDD tasks like game start or major texture loading. However, once your game is up or new areas loaded you should NEVER see them, if not you have a symptom of a larger underlying problem.
Here is an example of a "good" purple line during loading of an area
D) Intel WiGig Wireless issue: Streaming image in headset “blurry” or “pixelated” either main game or even SteamVR home
Not enough CPU allocated either SteamVR processes or Intel WiGig process:
  1. vrcompositor.exe
  2. vrserver.exe
  3. HtcConnectionUtility.exe
There is a chance if you are running P and E cores that some of your SteamVR process are running on an E core. My 13900KS did just that! You could either try hinting your VR processes to force use P cores or brute force disabling all E cores and see if issue persist. As P/E core technology matures hopefully this will become less of an issue. But I can 100% attest that my random “blurry/picilabed” vr image stream issue was resolved by ensuring that all my steam VR process and game run on P cores only.
If you are running an old CPU and depending on game -- you may not be able to resolve this at all.
You could also set the priority of you all you’re the important SteamVR, game and Intel WiGig process, I don’t recommend using “Realtime” ever. “High” is as high as I would go.
Example:
wmic process where name="vrcompositor.exe" CALL setpriority "high priority"
timeout 1 > NUL
wmic process where name="vrserver.exe" CALL setpriority "high priority"
timeout 1 > NUL
wmic process where name="vrmonitor.exe" CALL setpriority "high priority"
timeout 1 > NUL wmic process where name="Fallout4VR.exe" CALL setpriority "high priority"
timeout 1 > NUL
But don’t mess with CPU affinity setting IMO just let the OS do its thing, else you may end up with CPU core overallocated.E) Vive-pro headset blue or grey screen:
Get the obvious out the way, make sure decent line of site from camera to wireless headpiece. Much less of an issue IMO also you can clearly see your signal strength. You could also try different channels, but that too is not major impact.
Actual Intel WiGig card Temperture is the number 1 cause in my opinion. I placed my card right over a fresh air intake fan and ran fans at max and have not had a single headset blue screen since. I am tempted to add a fixed fan connected to the MB header as a permanent measure. This card is passively cooled, so if your case gets hot inside you can run into blue/grey screen issues.
Example card placement in my pc case Apologies had all my RGB crp turned off.
A well known heat issue is the Vive wireless headset unit: Easily fixed by googling and buy headset fan mod. Vive wireless logs will show if you have this issue, normally you will get blue/grey screen crashes after 80c … if you are running around 45-50c you are probably fine.
Vive Wireless Headset Fan Link
3D Print Mold Link
If you have fpsVR there is a checkbox to allow showing real time wireless adapter temp too.
Ensure your WiGig process never loses power
You can locate the physical card and ensure Windows never cut its power.
Device Manager > View > Devices by Connection Type > System Devices
Example Link for example in my case, all under 7A3C you change the power setting to
Uncheck - Allow the comp. to turn off device power
Uncheck above box for all subs
Ensure SteamVR never turn off power to VR related USB devices
SteamVR Developer Disable Power Management
Loose USB connection between battery pack and wireless head piece. Probably less of a cause but can easily get a USB 3.0 replacement cable with better shielding.
USB Cable option -- not needed IMO
Length of coaxial cable from WiGig card to wireless sensor camera. Mixed feelings about this. I extended mine by about 3’ … I have zero issues, but increasing the distance could add to image qualify issues. If your troubleshooting remove it from your loop.
Example of extension cable Link
Replacement battery pack. If the power is clean, you should be fine. I don't suggest using 3rd party battery packs. Use original when troubleshooting.
I firmly believe the Intel WiGig card and Vive Wireless adapter heat are the biggest culprits to blue/grey screens.
F) Weird perceived in game lag, latencies or what feels like missed frames but without purple line on.
Do not change or add artificial FPS caps either using vsync, or MSI or Steam command line hints etc. One may mistakenly think that for example if your headset is 90Hz that artificially capping your FPS at 90 may be beneficial to remove additional wireless load -- But you actually adding problems with timings that maybe wont even show in fpsVR. Remove caps and aim for max fps.
G) My thoughts on overlocking:
Some posts argue that overclocking, or RAM XMP can be RC for blue screens. My view is that if you overclock and RAM tests are stable, you should not worry about it as you need all the CPU/RAM speed you can get for good VR.
H) Re-projection
I get a bit more reprojection with wireless compared to tethered with cable, but since it adds no latency to my gameplay (that I can tell), it does not bother me. OVR will show your stats. Keep an eye on reprojection and dropped frames. Reprojection is close to non-issue imo.
I) Other tools
latencymon -- somewhat useful to see if you have driver latencies
J) My Hardware
Recently upgraded and built new PC, from 9900KS/3090 to 13900KS/4090 (water-cooled). VR: VivePro (set to 150% rendering with lens mod and vive wireless. Still using old OG Vive lighthouses, Index knuckle controllers and sometimes old Vive wands. I have tried other VR headsets, but OLED, lens mod (clear) and total freedom of wireless to me are subjectively better. I don’t like the SDE I get, but can give up wireless and lens mod and OLED.
VR games I enjoy: Mostly FO4VR and SkyrimVR Current 13900ks/4090 VR play space and setup
Pancake Games: 1400p x3 screens DCS, E:D etc. My old 9900ks/3080 setup flight sim
What "good times" in FO4VR can look like:
Looks for frame times and temperatures, Vive Wireless temp. at very bottom.
Diamond City loading in image
Diamond City After Load In
Rain and other effects ongoing

Hope this helps someone, took me some time to put this all down!

2023.05.31 19:03 Tunnelboy77 Need someone to do an energy audit. I think.

Have a modern 5 year old forced air system built where no system existed (no ducts). With heat on and stat set to 68, one room becomes like 84, another is freezing, etc. No dampers on any ducts. Who specifically do I call to evaluate this and perhaps fix it? Just a generic hvac company? Installation was done when house was vacant and remained vacant for a few years, so can’t go back to original installer now.

2023.05.31 19:00 MjolnirPants Gary and the Nightmare: Part 1

"Shit!" Chris shouted, causing Gary to spin. Boss held a spotting scope up to his eye.
"No way they didn't see us," he said. Gary marked the two running figures in the distance. He didn't think about it. He didn't register that they seemed small. He only knew that if the Taliban got wind of them moving through this pass they'd start mortaring the area and send out spotters. It would just be a matter of time before they were all dead.
He put his eye against the magnified optics. He placed the crosshairs at the top of one figure's neck and fired. It stumbled and fell. The other one angled off, getting some lateral motion, which would have been a smart move if Gary weren't such a good shot. He got the left arm of the crosshairs lined up on the same spot, the vertical bars just in front of the figure and fired again. The second one dropped.
"Checking," he said as he rose from the crouch he'd shot from and ran towards the closest. It took a minute or two to reach him, and when Gary flipped him over, his breath caught in his throat.
Blood soaked the front of his tunic and the lower half of his face. He was gasping for breath, his windpipe and probably one of his lungs destroyed by the intense cavitation of the 5.56mm round.
"I was..." the boy gasped. Because that's what he was, just a boy. A boy with thin, delicate features. A bow-tie, soaked in blood and clinging to his neck was below the tunic and Gary could just make out the top of a familiar Star Wars patterned vest below it.
"I was going to save the world," the boy gasped.
"You were," Gary agreed. "You were gon' marry a goddess and have the sweetest kids. And you were going to save the world, more'n once."
"Found the second!" Rog called. Gary turned away from the boy who would now never grow into the man he'd meet in a safehouse in Kabul after getting discharged and taking up work for the Company.
He walked over, ignoring the uneasy feeling in his stomach.
This one was a girl. Earth-brown skin and tightly braided cornrows greeted him. Gary collapsed when he saw her.
"Why'd you shoot me, daddy?" she asked.
"I had to, baby," Gary sobbed. "You was gonna call the Taliban."
"No I... No I wasn't... I was gonna tell... Dad," She reached up as Chris jogged up. Rog looked at them, scowling.
"Dad and Daddy? What are you, a couple of fags?"
Gary ignored him. He cradled his daughter in his arms as she bled out into the dust and dirt of a fallow field.
----
He awoke with a start, the old familiar panic already fading. Chris sat up smoothly, awoken by his movements and wrapped his arms around Gary. His smooth skin pressed against Gary's back and helped ground him in the moment.
He was in bed, naked, with his husband. Natalia was asleep in her room, peaceful and calm and happy and loved. Gary reminded himself that he didn't need to check on her. That she was a light sleeper, and she'd wake up and then all three of them would be up until four in the morning, and they'd all be bleary-eyed and exhausted all day tomorrow.
"Same dream?" Chris asked. He nuzzled Gary's neck, then kissed his shoulder. Gary reached up to stroke his arm.
"Yeah," he said, his voice raw. "A little different, this time."
"In what way?"
"The first one was Jerry. But as a kid, you know? Like, ten, twelve years old. He was wearing one of his little bow-ties and his Star Wars vest under the tunic. The second one..." Gary took a deep breath to steady himself. "It was Nat."
"Ouch," Chris said with a wince. Gary nodded.
"I won't lecture you about how we had no choice again. I think you know. I think your brain has made your peace with it, and this is just your conscience, refusing to let go."
"Ayup," Gary said.
"Hey," Chris grabbed his chin and turned his head to kiss him tenderly on the lips. "That conscience is a part of what makes you so beautiful."
Gary smiled into the kiss.
"Come on now," he said when they pulled apart. "We both know you only want me for my body."
Chris slipped a hand down Gary's stomach and let it drift lower and lower.
"Well, how about that," he said when he found something interesting. "I think we both know that it's my body that somebody wants right now." Gary reached back.
"I'd say the feeling's mutual," he said. Chris moved around as Gary stretched his legs out to let the beautiful man straddle his lap. Their lips met as they intertwined the fingers of their hands. All thoughts of the nightmare fled Gary's mind as the blood rushed out to do other things.
----
As was usually the case when they woke up in the middle of the night for some hanky panky, Gary awoke with a sore neck and back. He stretched out, toes seeking the sheets and finding nothing but Chris' body, pressed to his side.
He opened his eyes to see that Chris was already looking at him. "You slept in," Chris said. "You're getting lazy in your dotage, old man." Gary turned to glance at the clock. 0527 hours.
"Seventeen minutes," he grumbled, sitting up and pushing his feet off the bed. There were the sheets, crumbled on the floor. Gary rolled his neck to work the stiffness out, then stretched his back.
He felt the bed jerk as Chris hopped out.
"Who's on KP this morning?" Chis asked, opening the underwear drawer and digging through. Both men were about the same size and shape, close enough to wear the same size clothes, so they'd long since combined their wardrobes into one. Chris found two pairs and tossed one to Gary, who caught it and stood to pull them on.
"It's your turn." Gary said, "But I think I'd like to get breakfast if you're okay with that."
"Grandma's?" Chris asked, referring to Gary's favorite greasy spoon.
"We can do something else if ya don't want that," Gary said. He opened the closet and found jeans for both of them, spinning suddenly and whipping one pair at Chris' head. Chris got a hand up, but not quite in time, and the legs wrapped around his head. Gary grinned at him as he got untangled.
"Well," Chris said primly as he extricated himself. "If that's how you're going to thank me for last night, I guess I can go back to pretending I still have a gag reflex."
"Let's not be too hasty now..." Gary said, but before he could go on, Chris whipped the jeans at him like a wet towel. The hem of one leg smacked into his back, just above his ass with a stinging crack, making Gary yelp and Chris grin.
"Truce!" Gary declared before his husband could fire again. Chris lowered the jeans and began to pull them on. Gary did the same with his pair, and then went digging into the closet again.
"Wanna coordinate today?"
"Get the long-sleeves. The two identical gray ones," Chris said. "Our pants already match, might as well match the tops, too."
"I take it you wanna wear the black boots, then?" Gary asked as he took the two gray shirts off the hangers and handed one to Chris.
"They're the only pairs we have that match."
Gary chuckled as he pulled his shirt on and tucked it into his pants. Chris tossed him socks and they sat down and pulled on their boots. When they were done, they admired each other for a moment.
"Twinsies," Chris said in an artificially cheerful, artificially high-pitched voice. Gary chuckled.
"Let's take Nat to IHOP," he said as he opened the door to get their daughter. "We ain't been in a bit."
"Works for me," Chris replied.
----
They hadn't quite finished their pancakes when Gary's phone rang. He looked at the number, then sighed and showed it to Chris.
"That's probably your first case," Chris said. Gary nodded. "Ayup. So I should take it." He pressed the accept button and held the phone up to his ear.
"Johnson," he said.
"Hey Gary," Inanna's voice said. "Hey, Anna," he responded.
"How's Chris and Nat doing?"
"They're good. We're just eating breakfast now, at IHOP."
"I'm jealous. Jerry's with the little ones today and I'm stuck in the office, running on coffee and a blueberry muffin from the break room."
"Figured you'd take the day off," Gary said. "What with it being the first day of summer break."
The waitress approached their table then. "Anyone need a refill? Anything to go? Or just the check?"
Gary held up a hand. "Am I gonna need to come into the office soon?"
"Uh... Probably. I've got a case for you, and you'll need to be briefed. And I think I might come with you. Mind magic might be useful here, and I know that's not really your thing."
"Want me to bring you breakfast?"
"Fuck yes," Inanna said with gusto. Gary chuckled and pressed the phone to his chest. "Can I get a menu? I'm gonna get a meal to go."
The waitress smiled and promised to be right back.
"What you want? Pancakes? French toast? Crepes? A big, hearty plate of eggs and potatoes and bacon?"
"Yes," Inanna said with a chuckle. "I'm famished."
"I'll do you one of the samplers and add some french toast, then," Gary said.
"Thank you, Gary."
"No problem. So give me the bird's-eye view."
Inanna sighed. "It's kids, Gary. I wouldn't have put something this heavy on you, except we don't have anyone else. Jack and Glenda are working another case up in the Rockies, John's up in New Jersey helping out with a kidnapping and both Clarence and Regina are on those killings up in Oregon."
She sighed again. "We've got three dead in a group foster home in the Baltimore suburbs, Franklin Green, to be specific. All three died in the middle of the night, one each night for the past three nights. The police reports said that each one woke up in a sweat, screamed the air out of their lungs and collapsed, dead. Preliminary autopsy results on the first showed tearing in the heart tissue, significant internal bleeding. The cops said the beds were soaked in blood."
Gary sighed. The waitress returned with the menu, and Gary used it to order Inanna's food. When he was done, she took off, promising to have it out shortly.
"Ayup. That sounds mighty weird."
"Cops called us when they got the third this morning. They're freaked out. The rest of the kids in that home and the caretakers are beside themselves."
"I'll tell ya what. I can be in Franklin Green in twenty minutes if I leave here. Why don't ya send me the address and we'll meet there. You can pass on the details to me as ya eat, I think I got enough to start with."
"Okay," Inanna said. "I'll leave the office in, say, fifteen minutes. How much for the food?"
"Don't worry about it," Gary said. Chris put a hand on Gary's arm. "I got it," he mouthed. Gary smiled at him.
"Okay, I'll see you there."
"Twenty minutes," Gary said and hung up.
"We'll take an Uber up to Gunpowder and have a nice hike," Chris said. "Maybe we'll stop by the safeway and pick up some supplies for a picnic." He looked at Nat. "Would you like that?"
"Hell yeah!" Nat said, kicking her legs happily and wiggling her butt back and forth as she shoved the last piece of pancake in her mouth." She grinned as she chewed.
Gary chuckled. The waitress returned with a pair of boxes and the check. Chris took it and muttered. "Military discount?"
"My dad was in the Army," the waitress explained. "You two wear it like a neon sign, no need to check IDs."
"Thank you, darlin'," Chris said, handing her the check back, along with his card. She took it to ring them up and Chris told Nat, "Say goodbye to Daddy. He's gotta go work."
"Bye Daddy!" Nat said, hopping up to come wrap her skinny arms around Gary's neck. He kissed her on the cheek and squeezed her back gently.
"Now, you heed your Dad, y'hear?"
"Yes, sir," Nat said. Gary smiled at her and booped her nose, eliciting a giggle. "That's my girl," he said.
----
"That ain't a lot to go on," Gary said as he and Inanna sat in Old Bess outside the group home. Inanna stuffed the last of her french toast into her mouth, dripping syrup on her lap.
"Shit," she muttered, grabbing a napkin and soaking up the condensation on the bottle of iced coffee she'd brought with her. She dabbed at the stain.
"I know," she said as soon as she swallowed. "But it's all we got."
Gary sighed. "Well, if you're done, let's go check the site. I'll interview, you scan for magic."
Inanna nodded and opened the door. "Mind if I leave this here for now?" she asked, gesturing at the empty food containers. "S'fine," Gary said. He climbed out and they both walked to the front door. He noticed that Inanna had a small handgun on her belt. He approved. It matched his G2C, which reminded him...
He produced his troll doll and clicked it to a belt loop using the small metal carabiner he'd had to replace the original plastic clip with. It was his good luck charm, his favorite of the collection that occupied a display cabinet in his living room. It had been with him through thick and thin, and it would make a good conversation starter with the kids, he thought.
Inanna knocked on the door, which was answered by a stressed-looking black man with a neat, short beard and a bald head. Gary felt the man magically. Patronly love, grief and stress came off of him.
Inanna and the man exchanged a few words and then she gestured to him.
"This is my partner, Gary Johnson. He's an Army vet as well." Gary stepped forward and offered the man a hand.
"Percy Washington," the man said in a deep, resonant voice. "Wrench monkey, oh-three to twenty-three."
"Pleasure to meet ya, Percy. I was a shooter, ninety-two to oh-twelve."
Percy chuffed a short laugh. "Couple of pensioners, then. Infantry?"
"Something like that," Gary said. Percy nodded, understanding what he was getting at.
"So Percy, can ya take me to one of the kids what saw what happened?"
"Yeah. Suzanne's still here. I had the others sent away, you know, for their protection, but Suzanne wouldn't stand for it. She flat refused to leave me and Beth."
Gary nodded. "Family's family, even if you had to find it."
Percy led him inside the large house, down a hall and to a small den with a TV on one wall and a thickly-upholstered couch on the other. A girl, about the same age as Nat sat there. She had bright red curls and a smattering of freckles across her face. The TV was playing a re-run of The Legend of Jimmy, from the first season. Suzanne was staring at it with haunted eyes. Gary blinked as he recognized the scene.
"Mighty strange coincidence," he said as he sat down next to the girl. She slowly turned her head to regard him.
"That's me," he said, as his counterpart on the screen tossed a grenade through a dilapidated factory door, waited for it to go off, then rushed in.
"Glenn Jackson?" the girl whispered.
"Gary Johnson, actually. They changed all our names for the show. The creator, my friend, Sookie, she wanted to give us the option of avoiding a lot of media attention."
She turned back to the television and watched as Glenn gunned down six men with ruthless efficiency.
"Is that how it really happened?" Suzanne asked.
"Sort of," Gary said. "Gunfire in a small space makes more smoke than you're seeing there. It's louder than the TV makes it sound, too. And I don't think there were any fellers in that particular room."
"But you rescued the girl?"
"Ayup. Found her hiding behind a couch, just like in the show. She was hurt, real scared, too. I got her out of there and back to our group."
"This is my favorite part," she said. Gary glanced over at Percy who nodded, then shook his head. Gary understood. Someone had hurt Suzanne before she came here. He sneered unconsciously and hoped his beard hid the expression. People who hurt kids... He called them and a few other types 'orcs'. Because they filled a role in his life that orcs did in fantasy books. People that the hero could kill in spades without ever having to feel guilty about it.
Gary and Suzanne sat in silence for a bit and watched the dramatic moment that Glenn found the naked Karen behind the couch. He watched as his counterpart put a large gun in her hands and she turned it on the greaser, bleeding out on the floor. He'd been dead in real life, but in the show, his eyes widened as he realized the girl he'd hurt would have her revenge.
The camera cut to a close-up on Karen's face as the flash of the shot lit it up. Three more flashes came in rapid succession, and then she gave the gun back and vomited on the floor.
Glenn held her hair back and rubbed her back as she convulsed, then pulled a large t-shirt from his pack and handed it to her. He stripped the shoes off the dead greaser and got Karen dressed.
The scene faded to black, and then expanded upon the meeting with Ishtar.
"You know, Inanna's here with me," he said.
"Ishtar?" Suzanne asked, not taking her eyes off the television. "Ayup. She's walking around, feeling out the magic in the house, right now. We can say hi, if you want. Maybe get some autographs before we go."
The people on screen chatted for a moment, then Ishtar ripped the head off the greaser she'd been holding hostage. Gary winced. Now that he thought about it, this was a little bit too violent for a child her age. He hadn't let Nat watch the show, yet. But Percy seemed like a good guy, and he clearly cared about his kids. Gary wouldn't second-guess his parenting.
Gary watched the characters vanish in the smokey heat-illusion visual effect that Sookie had picked to represent teleportation in the series, and then the credits rolled.
"Did you guys come here just to meet me?" Suzanne asked.
"Sort of," Gary said. "I need to talk to you, ask you some questions about what happened."
Suzanne nodded.
"Can you tell me? Just tell me the whole story of what happened to the others."
"I only saw Jerry die," Suzanne said in a small voice. A flash of the dream that had woken Gary up last night went through his head, but he dismissed the mental image. Jerry was a common enough name.
"I had a nightmare that night. A dark man came. He chased me through the house, but I hid in the attic and he couldn't find me for a while. I woke up when he opened the attic door.
"I was sitting in bed when Jerry woke up. He looked at me and said 'the dark man', then he started screaming. It woke everybody up. He screamed so loud his voice broke, and then he started bleeding out of his mouth and he fell over in bed."
Her voice had cracked worse with each word, and she sobbed the last few. Gary tried to gauge the girl, feeling her emotional state. She was afraid and sad of course. But she felt alone, too. She'd been an only child for a while, living with parents, real or foster, who didn't care about her. Until she'd come here, Gary guessed. He could feel where the wounds had started to heal, here in the group home with Percy and Beth and the other children. But then this happened, tearing the old wounds open.
Gary went for it. He wrapped the girl in his arms and pulled her into his torso, letting his shirt soak up her tears.
"I know, darlin'," he said gently. His own voice cracked with remembered pain. "I seen my friends die, too. I know what you're feeling."
She clung to him and cried for a long moment. Percy still stood in the doorway, his face a mask of sympathetic pain, blended with his own pain.
After a good while, Suzanne began to calm down.
"I wanna go lay down," she said.
"That's fine, honey," Percy told her. "You can go lay in me and Missus Beth's bed, if you want."
She stood and turned to walk through the door, but stopped.
"Are you here to kill the dark man?" she asked Gary.
"I think I might be, darlin'," he told her.
"When you do... Will you give me the gun? Like in the show?" Gary winced. This girl was too young for that, he was sure.
"We'll see," he told her. She nodded, accepting that, then turned and left.
"Jesus," Gary breathed.
"She's been through a lot," Percy said. "Her mother was one of those cultists from the show. So was her father, most likely, but nobody knows who that is. CFA found her when she was four, living in a roach-infested trailer with her mom, who was strung out on meth at the time. She had scars from cigarette burns on her arms."
Percy sighed. "The first foster family that took her turned out to be... A bad fit. They couldn't deal with a child who had trauma like that. They ended up locking her in her room and going out together a few times before the case worker found out and brought her to us instead."
"I hope them two ain't fostering any more kids," Gary said.
"They won't tell us what happened, but I heard through the grapevine they've been blacklisted," Percy confirmed. Gary nodded in satisfaction.
"She tell you what happened?" he asked. Percy shrugged.
"Same thing she told you."
"You notice the two parts about the 'dark man'?" Gary asked. Percy nodded. "I did, but I don't know anything about this stuff. I told the detective about it. I think it was her that called you guys."
"That sounds about right," Gary said. "Which was was Jerry? I mean, what order did the three pass in?"
Percy sighed again. "First, it was Candy. Then Jerry, then Martin."
"Did Candy say anything about a dark man? Or was there something else that could have inspired Suzanne's nightmare?"
"You think it was a coincidence?" Percy asked with a frown. Gary shrugged. "Maybe. I'm trying to rule that out."
Percy raised his hands in a helpless gesture. "Okay," he said. "Candy, right before she died..." He sniffed and angrily rubbed his eyes. "I made it into her room, because she was sleeping with Lacy, and woke her up when she sat up in bed. Lacy called us, probably tattling on Candy, she's like that, you know? Anyways, I went to see what was the matter, and I caught what Candy said. She said 'he's coming', right before she started screaming."
"Hmm. What about the last one, Martin?"
"I don't know. Martin had his own room. He might have said something, we didn't hear him until he started screaming."
Gary nodded.
"Thank you," he said. He walked up and put a hand on Percy's shoulder and spoke in a quiet voice. "I got a little girl of my own. I can't imagine what you're going through, right now."
Percy nodded and scowled at the floor. When he turned his face up to meet Gary's eyes, his were steely and angry.
"I just want this to stop," he said. "And if there's someone or something behind it, I want that person or thing or whatever... I want it dead."
Gary nodded. He patted Percy's shoulder. "Let me go check on my partner," he said. Percy turned with him. "Beth should be showing her the rooms where it happened. Come on. This place is a maze."
Percy led him through three halls to a stairwell, then up it and through two more halls until Gary could hear Inanna's voice.
"...not sure. I'm just gathering information right now. But it does look like that."
Gary stepped into the room the voices were coming from to find Inanna and a middle-aged, redheaded woman with long, straight hair, wearing a heavy metal T-shirt. The redhead turned to him as soon as she spotted him and held out a hand.
"Beth Washington," she said, her voice choked and raw.
"Gary Johnson," he said, shaking her hand. Beth nodded and let his hand go to stare at a bloodstained bed that had been stripped of sheets. Two more beds filled the room.
Gary turned to Inanna. "What'cha got?" he asked.
"There's something here," Inanna said. "A spirit or a deva, maybe. Not an asura, I don't think. It doesn't feel powerful enough for that. This is a tricky creature."
Gary nodded. "What can ya tell about it?"
Inanna shrugged. "Not much. I caught a glimpse of it, though. It looked like a tall man, perpetually cloaked in shadows."
"The dark man," Gary muttered. He felt the air as best he could. Even though he was nowhere near as proficient as Inanna, he could feel it. A dark, sinister presence, waiting to strike again.

2023.05.31 18:51 Demolecularizing Drilling holes in my headlight's dust cap for heat dissapation when using HID or LED?

I upgraded my headlights with HID and LED (Projectors).
The LED comes with a fan and heat sink but the dust cap is sealed with an o-ring and the H11 connector is sealed with an o-ring. This basically seals the fan and heat sink in an area with very little air flow. The LED bulbs stay under 150F which is much lower than a halogen bulbs.
My HIDs don't have any heat sinks or fans and I had to put a hole in the dust cap to run the wiring to the ballast. My HIDs came with a rubber plug which re-sealed the hole I drilled in the cap; so it's back to limited air flow.
I'm concerned about the effects of the heat on the lifespan and performance of the bulbs. I don't think either have any type of thermal throttling and they don't step down.
Replacement caps are pretty cheap if I need to undo my damage but the headlight assembly is not so cheap if something gets inside to damage the plastic. The plastic inside my headlights is already beat up a little due to age.
My idea is to use maybe four 1/8th inch holes and cover them with an adhesaive filter that can withstand around 250F for at least 6 hours without degrading or losing adhesive (personally tested the filters) and resists water while filtering particals as small as 0.2 microns.
Would it be beneficial to drill a few small holes in the cap and then cover those holes with a filter patch or filter tape to allow air exchange while keeping dust, debris, and water out?

2023.05.31 18:49 BrutalAttis Vive Wireless Troubleshooting Tips (blue screens/dropped frames/latencies) [RESOLVED]

Signal
Hope this helps someone, took me some time to put this all down!

2023.05.31 18:47 Interesting_Yellow66 AC unit only works with a specific outlet

Hello all.
I moved into my home in June of 2020. The home was built in 1945 and has a mix of modern grounded wire and old black fabric insulated wire. I have an upstairs loft without HVAC (updated wiring), so electric radiant heat and a window AC unit are used to condition the space. Recently, the AC unit has stopped working in the sense that the fan still kicks on, but the compressor doesn't kick on to cool the air. However, when I plug it in to a different outlet (different circuit I assume as well), it works fine. This is a bit bizzare because it still powers the ac to turn on, but it doesn't have enough Oomph to power the compressor. This outlet has worked normally since 2020, and has only recently done this. Below is a youtube video I made showing it.
Any potential things to track down that could cause this? Thank you

2023.05.31 18:45 xKatariness Dirty Sock Syndrome - AC killing me

It is a BMW F10 - 2011 model
I have got a can of AC cleaner foam, but I am confused as to where to spray it. Seller told me to just spray straight down the vent, the can suggests I spray through the cabin air intake below filter, and I see some people online go under the bonnet of the car within the blower motor and spray there. Likewise some say do not turn the car on for 30 minutes, while other say the vents have to be running at all times… I am LOST, and can’t even breathe inside my own car in this heat.. please help! Dealer wants about $250 (converted to usd) just to look for the problem, and god knows how much more for the fix… Any help is appreciated. Thank you

2023.05.31 18:40 RasulaTab GCUS-9-8984 -- Partial Discontinuation of the GM R&R Program - Posted for Archival Purposes

EDIT - Reposted, hecking filter...
Attached is information and some forms, which detail the dissolution of the GM R&R program. (Repair & Remanufacture) It took me a few hours to collect these documents, and I am posting them for archival purposes so people can find them in one place on google, hopefully.
Note - Don't give up hope unless your specific part number is listed. There is at least one salty GM Employee out there that appears to be capable of remanufacturing old ECM's for Corvettes and such.
My name is XXXX, and I am a lead agent here at the Saginaw DPAC center. I am reaching out to you in regards to the R&R program that you spoke with an agent about earlier today. Unfortunately, as of 01/30/2020, that program has been discontinued. Here is a copy of the bulletin that was put out about it in 2020:
Summary GM has been unable to resource an R & R program for HVAC control heads. All OE and reman part numbers will be discontinued and orders cancelled.
Details For several years GMCCA has been unable to supply some select HVAC control heads. As an interim step, a Dealer exclusive Repair and Return program (R&R) was launched, which would eventually transition to a DealeACDelco REMAN program once ample core inventory was obtained. Unfortunately, the interim R&R supplier elected to exit the business, resulting in the entire project being put on hold while GM attempted to resource.
Despite our best efforts, including a global search for potential suppliers, GM has been unable to resource this program. At this time, all options have been exhausted and the only path forward is the discontinuation of both the R&R program and the associated REMAN effort.
The following part numbers are DISCONTINUED and no longer available from GM. Please see the attached.

2023.05.31 18:39 Price_Familiar Kinda a shit post ngl but I think turning every single human into a vampire would solve the worlds problems.

I know this sounds crazy and my math is gonna be kinda loose, I obviously don't think this is an actual solution, this would never work in reality, vampires like eating people too much and killing each other for this to ever work BUT here me out.
From everything I can find twilight vampires need to feed about twice a month to once a month depending on exertion taking the average just for the math lets say all 8 billion humans are now vampires they now need to feed 1.5 times a month to stay comfortable. They can actually go indefinitely without blood but that would be cruel we want people to be comfortable so 1.5 times a month it is.
8 billion times 1.5 feeds a month times 12 months gives us 144 billion human sized animals or larger that need to be killed a year to feed everyone.
That sounds like a lot however in the U.S.A alone 22.8 billion animals have been killed for food this year and we're only halfway through the year. I'm having a hard time finding world wide stats but if assume the U.S.A will kill about the same number of animals in the second half of the year then that is 45.6 billion animas by the U.S.A alone.
That means the rest of the world needs to only make up 98.6 billion. Given how many animals the U.S.A alone kills I think we can safely assume the rest of the world is already killing that many animals for food a year if not WAY more, so that's pure numbers take care of
Now Obviously not all of those animals are human sized, a large number of those animals will be chickens. HOWEVER I don't think this is that big a problem. Remember humans no longer exist, there are no balanced diets or nutritional or dietary needs to worry about. We can safely take all the resources in the world devoted to raising anything that isn't big enough and convert them to raising animals that are. ALSO farming plants and crops outside of the feed we need for animals is now unnecessary. Humanity likely already has enough farm land to sustain the livestock we are talking about because remember we already kill that many animals a year anyway.
Not needing new farmland means that we no longer cut down 21.8 million acres of rain forest every year saving an unimaginable amount of habitat and allowing those forests to do what they do best and remove carbon from our air.
Speaking of carbon lets talk about how much less of it we would use. A world of vampires would simply have no use for cars on the day to day. Seriously why would you ever drive on a road that constricts you at maybe 80 miles an hour or so when you could run in a straight line from point A to point B at at least 100 miles an hour. You don't get tired and it would be so much faster. add in how much time you would cut out in traffic and I don't see people ever needing cars for day to day use, only to carry goods around. Thats 4.6 TONS of CO2 per car per year gone. people would still need cars to move their stuff but without groceries there's less stuff to move so lets be generous and say we cut out 2.3 tons of CO2 per car per year. that's still insane. This would also make Short haul flights a thing of the past for the same reason. Why go to an airport wait in line waste an entire day just to get somewhere you could have ran to in a few hours? I think long cross country and intercontinental flights would be the only ones left, saving a lot of carbon there too. That's also before you stop to think how much Carbon is spent shipping food around the world, we wouldn't need to do any of that any more. Vampires don't need to heat or cool their houses, they don't need constant running appliances like refrigerators or freezers, no microwaves to heat up food, no ovens and stoves to cook with, The list of little ways that vampires use less resources goes on like that forever. In short I think A world of vampires would Solve Climate Change/global warming and also a lot of most pollution. No food wrappers, water waste.
Vampires don't need healthcare, they cant get sick, don't age or get cancer. Any injuries they may get can simply be healed by venom. All the time money and resources that we as a species have to put towards medicine every day can now be put towards other things. I'm sure you can take all the conclusions ive made here and apply them to countless other industries and problems as well
TLDR We basically already slaughter enough animals to feed the world if everyone was a vampire. They use less resources and would pollute less. Turn everyone into a vampire and save the world I think.

The episode faded back in to a close-up of the Chris logo emblazoned on the side of the Total Drama Jumbo Jet's tail fin. "Welcome back to resource rich Alberta, Canada," the host greeted as the camera panned down to him, the Final Four, and a pair of interns standing by the open rear of the plane. Topher had regained control of his post digger, and a pyramid of oil drums stood behind the host.
"The interns were supposed," the two interns looked down in shame, "to bury these barrels full of maple syrup, sugar, spiders, and rattlesnakes," Chris explained, knocking on the top barrel causing it to rattle and hiss. The cast flinched in fear. "Long story short, the interns buried our reserve fuel barrels instead," the host continued angrily, knocking the top barrel over onto the interns. The lid fell off immediately, and while the black intern ran screaming, the white intern was quickly covered in a swarm of angry snakes and spiders.
"Since Izzy came in second," Chris said holding up a pickaxe and metal pan, "she gets this rusty old prospector kit."
"Sick!" Izzy cheered excitedly as she caught the tools that were tossed to her.
"And Ezekiel takes third place!" Chris added, the camera panning to the crochet boy as the host approached him holding a small plastic pail and shovel, the former red and the latter yellow.
"A child's pail and shovel?" Ezekiel asked.
"You're welcome," Chris told him. "And for coming in dead last...!" he said, looking towards the final teen with empty hands.
"I built a real T-Rex," Mal said in disbelief. "That should get me something!"
Chris laughed, a whistle now in his hand. "Yeah, you'd think so," he told the troublemaker. "First one back with a barrel of my oil wins immunity!"
"There are probably twenty square miles of badlands," Ezekiel said as he looked around, the perspective following his gaze across the wide barren landscape. "This could take a while."
"Oh! I forgot to mention!" Chris spoke up. "We'll be pummeling you with the occasional boulder." He laughed, then added "Funny, right?"
The Final Four just glared at him, and the whistle was blown.
\
The scene flashed ahead to some isolated spot in the rocky badlands, the camera panning to the right onto Mal digging with his hands. He was looking rather annoyed, and even more so when Izzy walked up behind him with her pickaxe and pan in hand.
"And this is the guy who looked down on us for the duration of the season," Izzy teased. "Currently digging the dirt with his bare hands."
"I didn't have a choice," Mal replied bitterly as he dug harder. "My dinosaur somehow managed to score worse than all of yours."
"That's because we don't like you at all," Izzy chirped.
"Don't you have somewhere to dig?" Mal shot back.
"Do you want to borrow my pickaxe?" Izzy held out the object.
"Are you being serious?" Mal raised an eyebrow.
"Psyche!" Izzy retracted her words. "It's likely against the rules, and I don't want to break them like you do."
Mal growled. "When are you never annoying? Leave me!"
"I will, but watching you dig without any tools is more enjoyable to watch," Izzy admitted.
"GET! OUT!" Mal roared in Izzy's face.
"Okay bye!" Izzy zipped away.
Confessional: Izzy
"I enjoy being playful, and although I am considered obnoxious, I only play it up when I'm around those I dislike, like my lying ex-boyfriend," Izzy sharply glared at the camera.
Confessional Ends
The shot cut to the glaring sun, then the camera panned down to Topher and Ezekiel strolling together with their prizes.
"If you want, we can trade our prizes," Ezekiel slyly offered.
"And work with a baby shovel? Not a chance," Topher denied before setting his post digger down and digging right through the dirt.
"I know we joined forces to vote out Mal, but I'm not sure if that makes us friends," Ezekiel called out.
"Why would you even say that?" Topher asked.
"Before Mal exposed himself, we rarely, if ever, had a conversation with each other," Ezekiel brought up, "and you were perfectly comfortable with eliminating Sadie."
"I was focusing on the game instead of Chris for once, and Sadie would've gotten more hurt if she was still here," Topher said.
"You do have a point there," Ezekiel slightly agreed, "but-"
Topher noticed something approaching off-screen. "Incoming!" he shouted, tackling Ezekiel out of the way just as a boulder crashed down in the spot Ezekiel had been standing.
\
The scene flashed to Chef sweating heavily as he carried another boulder to the bucket of a catapult. He set it in place, then leaned against it to catch his breath in the harsh heat.
"This, is the life," Chris said, the shot zooming out to show him standing at the front of the catapult holding some kind of drink in half a coconut. He casually leaned against the siege weapon, accidentally pushing the lever and causing it to launch the boulder, and a screaming Chef, into the air.
"Uh oh...," the host said as he watched his assistant fly off.
\
The shot cut back to Topher and Ezekiel, focusing on the discarded post digger before panning leftward to the boys lying on the ground next to the pail and pickaxe.
"Now that was a close call," Topher said as he started to pick himself up off the ground.
"Thanks for the save," Ezekiel added as the two stood back up. "I would have been dead."
"And I didn't want that to happen," Topher told him. "Letting people die is a line I won't cross." As he spoke, a familiar scream rose up in the background just before Chef and the boulder he was clinging to flew past behind the boys.
"I thought you would've left me under that boulder," Ezekiel replied as Chef landed with a crash just out-of-sight, "but I was wrong." In the background, Chef ran back the way he'd flown in from with a look of fierce determination on his face.
"There's more to me than just my talents and good looks," Topher said. "Now let's get back to digging." Ezekiel nodded, and the two picked up their tools.
Topher turned on his post digger, and Ezekiel started to dig with his shovel.
Confessional: Topher
"At first, I didn't think much of Ezekiel. I thought he was easy to eliminate before the merge, but he surprised me to the point of reaching the final four with me," Topher commented. "I applaud him for that, and I'm happy to call him a friend."
Confessional: Ezekiel
"I'm not gonna be ungrateful towards Topher after he rescued me from that boulder," Ezekiel admitted. "He has his flaws, but I have mine as well. He's not so annoying now that I think about it."
Confessionals End
Topher's post digger immediately produced a metallic clang beneath the dirt. "What did you hit?" Ezekiel asked, prompting Topher to stop the post digger so he could look down.
A particularly thick black liquid was oozing up around the spot Topher's tool was still embedded. "That's a barrel of oil!" Topher exclaimed.
\
The scene cut to multiple holes that were dug on the ground courtesy of Izzy, who wasn't on-screen right now.
A familiar scream was heard approaching, and Chris soon fell from the sky clinging to another boulder...which landed on top of him.
The camera cut left to Izzy using her pickaxe to dig a hole she was currently in. After a few more hits, she stopped to take a break.
"How am I supposed to find a barrel of oil out here in Drumheller?" Izzy grunted and hurled her pickaxe away. A clang was heard, and she went over to discover that her pickaxe had hit a barrel of oil, the oil leaking on the dirt.
"Hello, oil!" the wild child gazed at it. She soon saw a boulder coming her way, and it inspired her to hastily scurry out of the hole she was in before the boulder closed it.
"I could've been stuck in there, but thankfully I'm not," Izzy said to herself and focused on the oil.
\
The scene skipped ahead to a close-up of the oil barrel being rolled across the ground, a trickle of oil leaking from a small hole in the side near the lid.
"But if I take the barrel," Topher said as the shot zoomed out to show Ezekiel rolling the barrel, "you wouldn't get your first immunity."
"One of us should have immunity, and you deserve it," Ezekiel said after he stopped rolling the barrel.
"Really?" Topher asked.
"It's my way of saying thank you for saving me," Ezekiel proposed. "I'll find my own barrel."
"We don't need to convince Izzy to vote for Mal. She's as onboard with us as a captain on a ship," Topher said.
"Now go give that barrel to Chris before Mal does!" Ezekiel ordered Topher, who complied and rolled his barrel away from Ezekiel.
\
Another flash took the focus to the plane, where Chef and Chris were outside next to a grill; Chef cooking a hot dog and Chris eating a burger. They looked up when they heard the telltale pants of exertion, and saw Topher approaching with the leaking barrel.
"Congratulations, Topher. You just won yourself immunity!" Chris greeted as his fan rolled the fuel barrel up next to the plane.
"Can I go inside the plane for a while?" Topher requested.
"But we've got a final three barbecue ready. And you've got a very rare chance to hang alone with the host with the most," Chris glorified.
"That has been my lifelong dream!" Tooher marveled. "I'll party with you after I cook something first."
He ran off into the plane, leaving Chris and Chef to share a confused look. "Yeah, I don't get him either," Chris said idly.
\
The camera cut to where Mal was frantically digging another hole. "Must...get...barrel...," he muttered to himself, flinging dirt behind him. He stopped and grinned, the shot cutting in for a closer look and revealing the metal surface he'd just uncovered. "Perfect!"
A shadow fell on his back a few seconds later, and the perspective changed again to reveal it as Izzy standing next to her barrel. "Looks like I doubted you," she began. "You were able to dig up a barrel."
Mal stopped and briefly looked back over his shoulder to peek at her. "Unlike you, I did it all by myself and without any equipment," he gloated, "so that does not make me inferior to you."
"It doesn't, but I did find a barrel before you, so top that!" Izzy mocked the malevolent one.
It was then that Chris entered the scene, accompanied by the dings and icon that signaled a musical number. "Guess what!" he told Mal and Izzy, grinning impishly.
///\
[The scene changed to a dark lit room. Two castles rose up on opposite sides. The one on the left was colored gray and the one on the right was colored black. Both castles consisted of a cannon, two catapults, and two boulders, and a flag of the two contestants' faces were waving. The music began to play like one heard in war as Izzy rose from the gray castle and Mal rose from the black castle.]
"My dearest Izzy, you know I am a twisted man. Of my virtue I am truly proud."
[Mal started off the song in a deep and melodramatic tune. "What are you saying?" Izzy asked.]
"My chaotic Izzy, you know that thing called harmony, of which we lack that makes us stand from the crowd."
[Mal continued and Izzy added "Okay, that is true."]
"Then tell me, you big nut. Why you see them as your friends? Why do these normies touch your soul?"
[Mal sang as the floor started to blaze up and Mal's castle started to become bigger.]
"They see you, they fear you. The sun caught in your fiery hair, is blazing at them out of all control."
[He criticized the fiery haired girl and he and his castle began to tower over Izzy's.]
"Unlike chaos, their kindness, will help keep you contained."
"It's burning, it's maddening, it only causes you pain."
[Mal emphasized his next verse diligently. The ground below him blazed up with fire more, and Izzy looked at it with surprise before she steeled her glaze at Mal.]
"I am crazy!"
[Izzy began her verse, leading Mal to comment "Established!"]
"I am insane!"
[She continued. "Yep!" Mal said snidely.]
"But unlike you, I do not wish to cause pain!"
[Izzy sang, her tower increasing in width like Mal's did.]
"I love destruction and chaos, but I know too much is bad for us!"
[Izzy sung out, the fire circling around both of their castles.]
"Let go of my friend Mike! His body is his to own! Your heart consists of nothing but stone!"
[Izzy became serious as her tower rose up to reach eye level with Mal.]
"I will stop your plans to destroy my friends and my foes! We'll see how the final battle goes!"
[After Izzy said that part, the rivals readied their weapons to attack each other.]
"I've taken out your group! Now it's your turn to go!"
[Mal launched the boulders with the slingshots, creating holes on both sides of Izzy's castle. He let the rising fire lit the fuse of his cannon.]
"I have my integrity! Don't make me stoop this low!"
[Izzy performed the same actions Mal did and did damage to his castle as her cannon's fuse was lit as well.
Eventually, the cannons shot their balls out, and the two balls flew towards each other. They finally struck, and it created an explosion that covered the screen.]
///
"Say what you want about me, but I will never succumb to your levels of insanity," Izzy told Mal seriously. "You can take down my friends, but you can't turn me against them."
"And I want you to know that you'll never stop me from conquering Mike and his pathetic alters," Mal retorted. "Once I'm done with this show, I'll get the attention I ever desired."
Confessional: Mal
"Mike is trapped for good, and with him home, I can steal his hopes and dreams and make them mine!" Mal promised. "I will not burn down in a blaze of glory doing it though."
Confessional: Izzy
"And people say I'm a lunatic," Izzy grumbled. "You should compare me to Mal and reconsider."
Confessionals End
The footage flashed ahead, showing Izzy and Mal arriving at the plane with their barrels at the same time, though Izzy's was leaking.
"Where is everybody?" Mal asked.
"Ezekiel or Topher already got immunity, which means we're both obviously up for voting," Izzy said and turned mischievous, "or should that be you!"
Confessional: Izzy
"This is it! Mal didn't win immunity and this sure as heck ain't a non-elimination episode," Izzy whooped in the confessional. "The only person that'd get a vote is me, but Mal will obviously cast it."
"You should vote for yourself if you want a tiebreaker!" Mal cried outside the bathroom.
Izzy scowled at the door. "Not going to happen in your life!"
Confessional Ends
Crickets were chirping as the footage resumed, the camera pulling away from a close-up of a string of Chinese lanterns to show the Final Four assembled on boxes around a nighttime campfire.
"I've got a little season one tribute treat here for you!" Chris told them, holding up a marshmallow. The shot moved in front to show the platter he was holding with two other marshmallows and the stack of passport votes, and he continued. "Remember, Topher has invincibility, so there better not be any votes against him. So, Topher, you get tonight's first marshmallow."
He tossed the bit of sugary white fluff to the Chris fan, who caught it and examined it. "I remember watching them get passed to the contestants a lot," he remarked, "and now I get one to myself? Amazing." He shoved it into his mouth.
"Tonight's second marshmallow goes to," Chris continued, "Ezekiel, who also had no votes against him."
He tossed the second marshmallow to Ezekiel, who caught it and moved to toss it into his mouth.
"Let's read the remaining votes," Chris said, picking up the top passport of the stack, "just for a little suspenseful fun. The first vote goes to...Izzy!"
Izzy tensed up, but Ezekiel placed a comforting hand on her shoulder.
"One for Mal," Chris continued, the shot cutting to Mal and Topher as Mal's donned a scowl and Topher slyly smiled at him.
Chris looked at the third passport, and said "Another one for Mal!"
Mal was starting to get nervous at this point.
The shot cut back to Chris. "And the last vote goes to...Mal!"
Izzy caught her marshmallow with her mouth. "I can taste the sugar!"
"Finally! You're out of the game!" Ezekiel bashed the angry malevolent boy.
"This calls for a celebration!" Topher got out of his seat. "We've all been through a lot because of Mal. Be right back!"
Topher ran up the ramp of the plane. A few seconds later, he came back holding a rectangular chocolate cake. There were three lit candles on top, and the text 'Goodbye Mal!' was drawn out with chocolate frosting.
"This exquisite chocolate cake was baked by yours truly!" Topher stated as he walked down the ramp, but slipped on the puddle of oil, forcing him to land on his back while the cake splattered on the floor candle first.
"Topher, look out!" Chris, Izzy, Ezekiel, and even Mal yelled in alarm.
"What for?" Topher asked in confusion, unaware of the candle lighting the oil.
The camera quickly panned rightward to the door at the side of the plane; it slammed open and countless animals ran out – a sasquatch, a bear, a horse, a seal, a duck, a bunch of rats and chipmunks, and Ezekiel Clone at the front of it.
The resulting explosion was shown from about a mile away, and the light completely enveloped the once-peaceful nighttime scene.
The dust that had been blown up soon cleared, revealing that the shot had moved back towards the campfire. A tiki head had tipped over and metal debris was falling from the sky, and nobody was seen for about a second before Izzy and Mal leaned back out from behind the other tiki head that had been flanking them.
Ezekiel followed shortly after, standing up from behind the tiki that had fallen over and shouting "Topher!" in overwhelming concern.
"My beautiful plane!" Chris added, popping up in the foreground in panic and grief. Both he and Ezekiel immediately dashed towards the scene of the explosion, and the camera followed them as they ran.
While Chris continued onward to the wreckage, Ezekiel stopped at the stunned and charred form of Topher sitting on the ground. Topher's cake was burnt, and his hair was missing some pieces.
"Are you okay?" Ezekiel asked frantically.
"This cake was chocolate," Topher squeaked out, "and it's destroyed."
"Are you okay?" Izzy asked as she and Mal slid into the scene, only the girl looking genuinely concerned.
"I am not looking okay!" Topher replied as his singed hair crumbled and fell away.
"I gotta say, this is a nice look on you," Mal complimented Topher impolitely, to which the latter chucked the destroyed cake at the farmer's face.
"Chris?" Izzy asked nervously, looking off in the direction the host had run. "We need you!"
"He's fine," Chris said angrily, standing in the wreckage holding what looked like a flatscreen television. "Although I guess with the whole 'blowing up my plane' business," he said, the camera zooming out dramatically to show the full extent of the wrecked Total Drama Jumbo Jet, "he's OUT OF THE GAME!" The four teens were shown looking stunned at the announcement.
"So...the Final Three is me, Izzy, and Ezekiel?" Mal asked after he got the cake off his face.
"Yes, and I'm upset that you even made it to this point while I'm disqualified for an accident by Chris!" Topher glared up at Mal.
"You were just a pawn in my game like everyone else," Mal said before leaving the three.
Izzy and Ezekiel turned their heads over to Topher. "Don't worry about him. The two of us will not give up against that jerk!" Ezekiel assured.
"And given that we've come this far, we're not going to let him win!" Izzy confidently declared.
"Mal's karma will come to him, but I need to find something to cover my bald head," Topher added after looking at it.
\
The scene flashed over to a shot of the slightly-singed picture of Chris on the plane's tail fin.
"Well...," Chris began, audibly distraught, "this was not my best day...ever..." The camera panned down to show him standing amid the wreckage, eyes wide with shock and grief. "Join us next time," his voice cracked. "There...will be a next time, I'm just...not...sure what kinda show it will be," he said, holding back tears, "or where... It will still be called," he struggled to say, raising his right pointer finger as the usual grand music began to play, "Total! Drama! …World Tour...!"
His voice cracked again at the end, and he squeaked out the last two words before finally bursting into tears.
(Roll the Credits)
\
(Bonus Clip)
Chris was standing inside his plane, despite the fact that it was blown up as sad music played in the background.
"If this catastrophic event taught me one thing, it's how important the objects used in the show are," he mentioned seriously before getting down and rumbling through the props on the floor.
"I hope that some of the props were spared!" he begged and faced the camera after grabbing a toothbrush. "On the bright side, my teeth will remain snow white!"

2023.05.31 17:58 tomcarp555 Ventless gas log questions

We have a ventless log with the old fiber logs here in the mountains. It puts off a ton of heat even without the blower. It smells for a few days on start up but how unhealthy are these thinks. The heat rises to the bonus room and has a hint of un-burned petrochemicals. I have been leaving the central unit air on constantly to recirculate, leaving a door cracked, which is sort of defeats, the purpose of warming the house and considering using my HEPA air filter just in case. I was just wondering if anyone has thoughts on any and all of the above to improve my air quality. We’ve looked at replacing the gas unit with one of the electric LED units but with the exception of magic flame they look pretty cheap. Magic Flaim at $3500. It’s just not doable.

2023.05.31 17:52 ManintheArena8990 Engine warning light, losing power, had fixed twice.

My engine warning light comes on, and I lose power. If I put my foot on the floor there’s no reaction and car pretty much stuck at like 20.
I had it in they done some sort of electrical thing (can’t remember), and a ‘DPF regeneration’. Two days later warning light back on.
This time heating treated, air filter replaced. 3 weeks later, engine light on.
I turn car off for 10-20 minutes and I can drive for say 30 mins maybe and hour, if I drive like a 70 year going no faster than I absolutely have to… but inevitably it’ll lose power again.

Submission statement:
This article from El País reports on a new study published in Nature that quantifies for the first time the nine thresholds that we shouldn't cross if we want Earth to remain hospitable for civilisation. They include climate change, freshwater availability, natural area conservation, pollution levels, and ozone layer. The study finds that seven of them have already been exceeded in whole or in large areas of the planet. This is a clear sign of collapse, as it shows how human activities are pushing the Earth system beyond its safe and fair limits, threatening the well-being of current and future generations.
Translation:
Seven of the nine thresholds that allow human life on Earth have already been exceeded.
A report quantifies the climatic, natural and pollutant limits that ensure the safe and just maintenance of civilisation.
In 2009, a large group of scientists identified nine limits that humans should not exceed if the Earth is to remain hospitable to civilisation. These included, among others, available fresh water, the natural area that is conserved, pollution levels, the ozone layer and, of course, climate change. Now, a new report just published in Nature quantifies for the first time the thresholds for each of these problems that should not be exceeded if the earth system is to be safe and just not only for present humans, but for future generations. Seven of them have already been exceeded in all or large parts of the planet. The apocalyptic picture is softened by the fact that the hole in the tropospheric ozone layer has fallen off the list: humanity was able to solve the problem in time.
The report identified those limits for the Earth system, understood as a global ecosystem, to be sustainable and safe. It was written at the time that, if they were widely exceeded, a series of catastrophic changes would follow. But since then, safety has been joined by another idea: the Earth system will not be safe if it is not also just. It is one of the contributions of this new report, the quantification of justice between humans, other living beings and future generations.
"Human beings are part of the Earth system. We are a big part of the problem and we have to be a big part of the solution," summarises Noelia Zafra, co-author of the report. "But problems and solutions do not affect everyone equally and there are some humans who bear the inconvenience of sustaining the Earth system, while others mostly benefit. It is also the case that a few generate problems for many," adds the researcher from BC3, the Basque climate change research centre.
This is the case, for example, of the emissions that are causing climate change. Their rise dates back to the beginning of the Industrial Revolution and the main players, Europe and North America, are the main culprits. Even now, as emerging countries such as China begin to take a greater share of responsibility, half of greenhouse gas emissions come from the richest 10 per cent of the population. "We cannot act together to tackle the climate and biodiversity crisis if we are not all starting from the same situation and there is conflict between us," adds Zafra.
"It's not a goal, it's a limit".
The 2015 Paris Agreement set an acceptable global average temperature rise of 1.5 degrees Celsius to curb climate change. But that need for fairness explains why the report's authors further lowered the limit on the extra warming the planet could withstand, dropping it to one degree. The director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Change Research (Germany), Johan Rockström, reminded an online press conference that "1.5 degrees is not a target, it is not a goal, it is a physical limit". Above that limit the risks are very high, but even before it is exceeded, warming is already having profound consequences. Scientists estimate that the temperature has already risen by an average of 1.2 degrees Celsius and the impact can be felt across most of the planet and suffered by millions of people.
One of the contributions of this report is that it does not stop at the climate emergency. For its authors, it is already clear that climate change is not the only existential problem facing human civilisation. Another of the thresholds quantified is the portion of the planet that still retains its original state. The work promoted by the Earth Commission, an alliance of leading scientists, set 50-60 per cent of the Earth's surface to be preserved free of livestock, agriculture, mining or any other human interference. "Currently, we are between 45% and 50%. So, just below the limit," recalls David Obura of the organisation CORDIO, and co-author of the study. Obura also points out that denatured areas of the planet can still add resilience to the Earth system. The millions of hectares devoted to pasture and crops - even cities - can be part of the solution, provided that for every square kilometre of altered ecosystem, a minimum of 20 per cent is vegetated, even if it is not natural.
Other thresholds that have been quantified and already exceeded are the extra nutrients contributed to the soil by humans. In particular, they quantify anthropogenic nitrogen and phosphorus used mainly in agriculture. An excess of these elements alters both the substrate and the water in a process known as eutrophication. Cases such as the Mar Menor in Murcia illustrate this very well. The limits not yet exceeded globally, but in large areas of the planet, have to do with the use of water, both surface and groundwater. According to the report, one third of the planet is already over-exploiting surface water resources, with the limit set at 20%. For groundwater, the rate of replenishment is not respected in half of the Earth. As for air pollution caused by the emission of non-natural particles (engine combustion, heating and cooling, industrial emissions, etc.), the limit is still far from being exceeded on a global scale, but it has already been exceeded in several regions of the planet, such as South-East Asia.
The report acknowledges that it leaves out problems such as ocean acidification, plastic accumulation and microplastics, persistent chemicals and antibiotics. They argue that these are threats that have not yet been sufficiently studied to determine whether they pose existential risks. Several of the problems are also related, such as the loss of biodiversity accelerated by excess nutrients. And others, such as climate change, amplify the severity of the others.
"If we look at freshwater, air, pollutants like nitrogen and phosphorus, or the integrity of the biosphere both in terms of surface area and biodiversity, we do so on purpose because if they add up, they provide resilience, buffering capacity and stability to the whole Earth system," Rockström told the press conference. Exceeding each threshold in these areas reduces "the strength of the planet to cope with the climate crisis". He added: "Seven of the eight indicators we have been assessing are outside the safe and just space. We also see that there is a window for transformation to regain that safe space that is still possible. But it requires transformations and very, very fast action. And it will not be enough just to decarbonise the global energy system.
How can this be done? From BC3, Zafra recalls the challenge: "Human well-being cannot exist without the Earth system. Reconciling the well-being of all human beings with justice with the limits of the Earth system means asking ourselves what well-being really is, what and how much we need to feel good, how much we are willing to harm other people and living beings to achieve what, and carrying out broad social processes at all scales that allow inclusive and fair transformations to tackle the climate and biodiversity crisis".

Herd, I forgot how much I hate paperwork.
When we had pinpointed where Unzekep was a couple paws ago, I was eager to get on her trail. Unfortunately, reality just had to get in the way of those ambitions…which is where I find myself now. First was all the speh we had to submit to the Health and Safety Department regarding our “inquiries” into the construction site to find Tagelb. A noble action, no denying that, but it brought up questions about our presence on the site. “Why were we there? Were we associated with a third-party firm? What was the quality of evidence produced for the claim?” Stuff like that, constantly, for almost an entire Paw.
We came clean, sort of. We at least disclosed about us being journalists. My evidence showing money changing paws between that foreman and the previous safety inspector came in handy in our explanation of us looking into corruption. As an additional surprise, many of the workers of the facility came forward with older stories of regulation skirting and site mismanagement. Tagelb even chipped in, providing another perspective of what we witnessed whilst in there. Safe to say, that foreman isn’t going to be in charge of much any time soon.
But did we really need to fill out all of those affidavits??
The second problem was that, due to us revealing that we were journalists, we wouldn’t be able to simply walk up to Unzekep while she was on the job. We had to get a “press permit” that would allow us to walk in the tunnels, which meant more paperwork signing that we agreed to the risk and knew the safety standards and procedures we had to follow while underground. They even made us take a test for that!
Today, though, marked the end of our tedious paperwork and safety waivers. We were finally cleared to go into the system, and the district had promised silence on the matter. Part of me thinks that their willingness to accommodate us is due to not having to pay us like their other safety inspectors. Oh well, at least it’s a way in that doesn’t require cartoonish cover stories. I slide on my satchel and exit my room, waiting for the elevator to arrive at the correct floor so I can board.
After a short wait, I’m granted access, and yet another short wait later, I arrive at the foyer. First-meal would normally be first on the schedule, but today was special. In order to avoid detection by any unwanted eyes, we were due to leave first thing in the Paw, when almost no-one else would be out. After a brief scan of the lobby, I spot Sharnet sitting on a chair with a duffel bag on the ground next to it. I trot over to her, motioning to get her attention.
“Good Paw, Sharnet! You sleep well after all that paperwork?”
Sharnet shuts her holonote off and stows it away in her pack. “Yes, somewhat. I do wish that they would’ve just looked the other way completely, now we’re on their records. If someone’s watching, we’re a dead give-away.”
I sway my ears negatively. “I don’t think they’ll be looking deep in government registries. That would require access, and if they were in the government, chances are they’d have noticed long ago and already fled. To my knowledge, there hasn’t been much movement on the private nor the public transit systems, and none of the Harchen. Trust me, I had the same thought.” I pull out my pad, the tab for the transit logs still logged in with the temporary credentials the district has given us. “Check for yourself.”
Sharnet looks over the information rather inquisitively. “Now that’s interesting.”
I cock my head. “What is?”
“I looked up Unzekep’s home address,” she explains, “and it’s in an apartment building on the edge of town. She doesn’t have a vehicle, so by all rights she should be traveling on public transit. But this shows none of the Harchen have done so. The fact that she isn’t…”
Her sentence falls away as her ears twitch in thought. Now that she’s said it aloud, I realize how strange that is. “That…is odd, actually. You’d think that she would be using the public transit system to get to and from work each Paw.”
Sharnet’s tail swishes against the ground. “Do you remember what Tagleb said about her? He said that she spent a lot of time in the tunnels. Do you think… well, no, there’s a couple possibilities. But…”
As she’s making an appeal to rationality, I realize what she’s implying. “That she’s living in the tunnels. That’s what you were going to say, right?”
She sways her tail in the affirmative. “I don’t want to cast judgment yet. But…if she’s one of the overseers, those tunnels are well out of sight. People could probably survive a raid by hiding in there. Of course, if she isn’t a head, staying in those tunnels might not be her choice.”
I look at Sharnet skeptically. “Not her choice? What reason could someone possibly have to stay down there that isn’t their choice?”
“Well, that safety inspector that the foreman bribed likely didn’t inspect only one site.” Her claws clench against her wool. “In my previous job, there was a time when there was only one person on staff who knew how to maintain and repair the office electronics. The company has them stay on overtime. If she is in a similar situation in the tunnels…”
That’s not a good image to have in my mind. Being one of the only ones repairing equipment and materials that would have otherwise been flagged as a safety danger… My arms and legs are exhausted by just imagining what might be needed. “Oh, Herd, that’d be bad. I’m not certain that’s the case, though, as the District let us have our way with seeing her. They wouldn't do that if they had something to hide.”
Sharnet raises a finger. “If they’re smart.
I can’t help but give a low whistle to myself at that. “If they’re smart, yeah. Ready to go see how dumb they are?”
Her tail wags in amusement as she rises from her seat. “We can grab a couple to-go salads from the meal bar and head right out, if that’s okay with you.”
“Sure, might as well if we’re going to be spending all day in the sewers.” I follow Sharnet over to the salad bar, and we order some bog-standard salads to go. Nothing fancy, we are on the clock after all. Once we receive our food, Sharnet heads back to grab that duffel bag and we head out, the light of our star bearing down on us as we exit the building.
It isn’t long before a bus comes to pick us up, the driver seemingly surprised to see someone waiting for him at this claw. We board and take our seats, eating our salads as we’re ferried to our next destination. Thankfully, only a single other person is on the bus right now, and they’re too busy with something on their pad to notice us. A public space with no noise, perfect.
As I eat, my mind wanders back to Tagelb. I had meant to go back and see him again last Paw, but paperwork had obviously gotten in the way of that. As much as I hate to admit it, I’m intrigued by the Yotuls’ archaic technology. Steam engines, massive train systems, even rudimentary hydrocarbon combustion engines! I wanted to learn more, but I knew Sharnet was only tolerating that in search of our guy. I knew I had to go back to hiding eventually.
The worst part was how I had to hide myself from Tagelb, even if it was less than normal. I heard his views on Predator Disease, and I knew that if I slipped it, that was it. I’d lose yet another friend because I couldn’t keep my Herd-damned mouth shut. I’m determined to keep doing what I’m doing, even if it means hiding myself forever. From Tagelb, from Sharnet, from everybody. Ignorance is bliss, and if nobody knows I’m a monster, it’s a little easier to pretend I’m not for myself.
I’m shaken from my internal lamentations by a paw lightly shaking my shoulder. I glance over at the culprit, finding Sharnet’s gaze. “Are you okay? You went a little wall-eyed while you were eating your salad.”
I look down at my bowl, only to find it empty. I quickly reseal it and feign my innocence yet again. “Hm? Oh, yeah, just thinking about how we’re going to do this. Not an easy task, after all.”
She pulls up the duffel bag she’s been carrying into her lap and zips it open. “Thankfully, these should make it a bit easier.”
Inside are a pair of construction pelts. Visibility vests, gloves, foot coverings, and two helmets. Those… brahking uncomfortable helmets. “Do we really have to wear those?”
I know it’s a dumb question. I read the same procedures as she did. This equipment is a basic requirement for us to go into the tunnels. No matter how much it rubbed up against my ears.
“Yes, I’m sure. We read the same waiver, we signed on the same lines. I’m not a fan either, but sometimes you have to make sacrifices.” She pulls out one of the pelts and hands it to me, retrieving the other for herself. I groan internally at the mere thought of having to wear another helmet. She gives her ears a comforting flick. “These are brand new, so the padding won’t be as worn down as the last helmets were. I don’t know if it will stop the bother, but at the very least it shouldn’t be as bad.”
Small comforts. “I hope so, yeah.” As I look over the helmet, the bus stops and opens its door to our destination. “Industrial center! Next stop, the Intraplanetary Transit Hub!” We stand from our seats and make it off the bus, which unceremoniously closes its doors and leaves us stranded in the dead center of the industrial heart of Sidestar.
The town is centered around maintaining the power plants that comprise the central economy of the District. As a city well within the twilight, power meant life. It allowed the growing houses to keep the local edible vegetation harvest alive, light up the iron ore mining operations in the mountains, and the steam tunnels flowing with heat to fight back against the cold winds from the night side flowing down from the mountains. Those steam and drain tunnels are where a large number of people work. Having to expand and repair sections as their city grows. And Unzekep is currently working on replacing outdated units. Somewhere in there…
I’m pulled from my analysis of the area by Sharnet, who has since applied her pelt. “Come on, put on your uniform so we can get down to where we need to be.” I heed her words and quickly apply my clothing before following Sharnet through the complicated system of tubes and ducts that comprises the ground-level of one of the for-profit geothermal reactors.
Thank the Herd for the 3d map the District had given us access to. According to the schedule, Unzekep should be in the coolwater pump room, replacing the turbines in one of the pumps. Unfortunately, that’s all the way in the basement of the building, accessible to the steam tunnels leading under the rest of the town.
Steam heating the town. And the Feds call the Yotul primitive for using the same principles. I shake the annoyance from my mind as we descend down ladder after ladder, walking across steel catwalks over huge drops for the snowmelt that would occur after the night finished. I can see what all those waivers were about now.
From my map, we should be coming up to the pump room soon. It’s next to this… cargo… elevator… Oh for the Herd’s sake!
Sharnet huffs, panting from the humidity and heat of the underground caverns. “What puddle of Speh left that out of the official map? We could’ve been here a quarter-claw earlier!”
“Beats me, but at least we’re here,” I manage to say, leaning against the wall as it feels like I’m trying to breathe through syrup. “S-Sorry, just need to take a breather for a second. The humidity down here is really messing with me.”
“I understand,” she holds out her tail for a comfort touch, “if you think you’re about to have an attack, don’t hesitate to let me know. Your health is important.”
“Thanks,” I huff. After a few moments of slow breathing, the air managed to become a little more breathable. “Alright, I think I’m good. Are you ready to meet our next in line for Spehlicker of the Hectorotation?”
“If we’re lucky,” she replies before sliding open the doors. Four massive pumps dominate the room. They stand as long and tall as the bus we rode in on. It’s truly impressive to see the power of the planet itself being harnessed through the mechanics of these machines. But… I’m unsure about the noise. It isn’t too loud, Sharnet and I would be able to raise our voices over them without going into full on shouting, but it was a constant high volume I haven’t been around before. It feels…grating.
Thankfully, it’s obvious that we're in the correct room. One of the pumps has a series of curved pieces of metal with a pile of bolts and… a stack of impellers, if I’m remembering the word correctly, laying on the ground. Tools and spares are scattered around the area, a mug of some sort of beverage is on a nearby ledge, wisps of steam still coming from its surface. Wait…wisps of steam…
I place a paw against Sharnet’s chest, to her confusion, as I scan the room for anything out…of…the… There. In the corner, a few splotches of green on an otherwise gray surface. Imperfect camouflage, just like Tagelb had said. As I focus, I can make out an outline of a trembling person, moving in tandem with the spots. She must have heard us approach. I gesture to Sharnet in the direction and she flicks her ears affirmatively.
“You must be very skilled,” she says, staring at the splotches with an eye, “your camouflage is practically seamless.”
As I watch, the splotches increase in their trembling. A voice floats out under the hum of the pumps, barely heard by my ears. “No, no, go away, leave, this is safe, no, please leave, don’t hurt me, no.”
“We are here about Dawn Creek,” I say, “We-
The Harchen shrieks.
The gray walls reveal the colors of a Harchen in distress as she falls to the ground in sobs. It’s difficult to see anything about her, as she curls herself up and pleads. “P-Please! No! I don’t w-want to go back! Don’t m-make me go back!”
Both Sharnet and I had lightly backed away at her shriek, but now we both approached her. Her scale shifts seem almost sluggish, but they do indeed shift. It’s only once I get a better look at her face do I realize what Tagelb was talking about.
Her facial features are slightly flatter, looking almost compressed compared to that of the other two Harchens we’ve run into here. Her forehead is a bit larger than normal, and her neck is slightly shorter. In fact, she herself is shorter than average, if only by a little. Near her temples, four splotches of unchanging green remain constant despite the rest of her shifting form, each an imperfect circle of dull green.
She just keeps sobbing and pleading incoherently as we approach, not even attempting to run. It was like… it’s like she’s given up. This can’t be it, can it? I expected pathetic, but this? This is just sad to watch. But as I do indeed watch, something comes to me. This isn’t fear of getting caught, this is fear of going back.
I remember what I learned about the treatments they used, the drugs they administered, and what Sharnet had said to Tagelb. People with no disease at all. It all clicks together in an instant. This isn’t one of the heads of the Dawn Creek facility.
No.
This is an escapee.
