WILD MAN: Saint or Sinner Posted on May 2, 2021by Dana Rehn The Representation of Wild Folk During the German Renaissance The wild man was inspired in part by pagan hybrid woodland creatures like the satyr, however, much of the mythology of the wild man stems from barbarians of Europe.[i] For much of the Middle Ages, they were considered the antithesis of the civilised Christian society. They were cannibalistic, sexually deviant predators whose many characteristics were related to monstrous races as well as the insane. Despite the wild folk’s outsider status and the antithesis of Christian morality, the wild man and woman nevertheless became an icon of German nationalism. The image of the wild man and woman became a pervasive figure throughout the German Renaissance, depicted on a vast range of media from stained glass, woolen tapestry, playing cards (fig. 3), and ordinary household objects. The wild man and woman transitioned from a demonic brute beast to a romanticised image of the noble savage. They recall a simpler time in German history and became a part of the image of a united and strong German people. They also posed as an affront to the court culture of Rome and became associated with the virtues of the natural wilderness. Cleric, Johann Geiler von Kaysersberg, associated them with the image of the hairy saints who found redemption in the wilderness by categorising them as a type of wild man in Die Emeis.[ii] The German forests that the Wild Man was thought to reside were starting to be romanticised. Geographer, Johannes Rauw, praised the ancient forests that had long been demonised by Italians as a place of barbarians.[iii] From rapists of damsels, wild men were depicted with the virtues of the nuclear family in the Garden of Eden before ‘The Fall’ (Genesis 3). In this way, the wild man and woman became increasingly mythologised, merged with ancient Germans, ascetic saints as well as Adam and Eve. Although there were a growing number of romanticised images of the wild man and woman during the sixteenth century, negative representations persisted. Their depiction was not a simple shift from demonic woodland creature to the image of holy saints; many possessed both contradictory notions of sinner and sainthood. The multifaceted representation of wild folk reflected many of the contradictions of German Renaissance society. Man or Animal The reputation of the wild man stems from antiquity. Aristotle believed that people who lived outside the civilising influence of the urban city lacked the ability to reason.[iv] In this way, they were considered closer to animal than man, subjected to their impulses.[v] The wild man and woman were also believed to lack speech, used primitive tools such as the club, and lived away from civilisation.[vi] Even the food that the wild folk would eat – berries and uncooked food – was a mark of uncivilisation and thus associated them more with animals than man.[vii] Many were also thought to crawl on all fours, which is illustrated by the often bare knees of wild men and women.[viii] The wild man as well as the woman were characterised for their violence and unhinged rage. They both shared a love of combat and have even been depicted jousting against one another.[ix] It is not just appearance, but also behaviour that made someone bestial like peasants who were described with animal qualities. The wild man has also been associated with bears and mythology exists with bears who were able to transform into wild men.[x] Their unbridled sexuality was also more associated with animals. Wild men were thought to abduct pretty maidens, while the wild woman would transform herself into a beautiful woman and attempt to seduce men with her true ugliness only to be revealed during intercourse.[xi] In this way, they were also associated with other pagan and hairy woodland hybrid creatures from antiquity including satyrs and centaurs, who were also known for their immoral behaviour and insatiable sexual appetite.[xii] Albrecht Dürer combined classical mythology with German folklore in the engraving of the Abduction of Proserpine on a Unicorn (1516) (Fig. 1). The print recounts the mythology of the abduction of the goddess of fertility by Pluto (Hades), God of the underworld – the pagan equivalent to the Devil.[xiii] In place of the classical god is a wild man on the back of a unicorn. Although this wild man is not covered in think body hair, he has wild hair on top of his head and a large bushy beard. He is identified as a wild man by his riding of a unicorn where the wild man was believed to be the only creature strong enough to overpower it by force.[xiv] Unicorns were originally regarded as ferocious beasts who used their horn as a weapon.[xv] Tales and visual art from the fourteenth century tell of wild men who become tamed by love after abducting a woman.[xvi] Yet this print illustrates man’s sexuality was thought to reduce them to a brute beast. Fig 1. Albrecht Dürer, Abduction of Proserpine on a Unicorn, 1516, Etching, 30.8 x 21.3cm, The Institute, Chicago. During the Middle Ages, many people concluded that wild man and woman were degenerative humans. They became an irrational beast in the same way that the insane were believed to be a form of wild people. Medieval romances frequently described people who suffered a crisis and lost their mind and ran into the forest living as semi-human wild people.[xvii] In Hartmann von Aue’s (c. 1160/70- c. 1210/20) Iwein, the protagonist who has broken a promise to his wife and is rejected, roams around in the forest until he is discovered by a lady who saves him from his insanity.[xviii] The wilderness in part created the state for wildness as it was away from civilisation and rationality.[xix] Like many monsters during the period, the wild man and woman were defined by their nudity. In this way, they were symbolically outside civilisation – both physically and behaviourally.[xx] Even those who have become temporary wild men through madness and fled into the forest shed their clothes and only returned to civilisation by again putting their garments back on. While in the forest they begin to grow hair all over their body to signify their move away from the human realm and into the animal one.[xxi] The wild man and woman encapsulated the fears of Europeans and what happens to one if they abandon civilisation.[xxii] The theme of civilising the wild man was popular during the Middle Ages. It was knowledge and acceptance of the one true faith that inevitably brought the wild man back to civilisation.[xxiii] In a thirteenth-century Bavarian epic poem, republished in the sixteenth-century German collection of stories, Das Heldenbuch mit synen figuren (‘The Book of Heroes’), recounts a wild woman called Raue Else (‘Rough Else’). The woman who was hairy all over and walked on all fours approached the knight, Wolfdietrich, who questioned if she was an animal. [xxiv] The wild woman demanded the love of the knight and upon his refusal turned him into a crazed wild man who crawled on all fours for half a year until God commanded her to disenchant him. In return, Wolfdietrich offered to marry the wild woman so long as she was baptised. She took him back to her kingdom at Troy and after bathing in the fountain of youth she was transformed into her former self, the beautiful princess, Sigeminne (‘Love’s victory’).[xxv] Wild Man as Noble Savage Although the wild man and woman were frequently represented in literature during the Middle Ages, they were rarely depicted in visual art until the fifteenth century.[xxvi] Therefore, their most ferocious reputation left little mark in visual culture. Instead, the wild man and woman were frequently represented in Renaissance art as the image of purity, with their family representing the virtues of parenthood and a companion or as a saint. Lynn Frier Kaufmann argues that the idea of chivalry and courtly love during the Middle Ages influenced the way wild men and women were depicted during the Renaissance.[xxvii] Larry Silver on the other hand interpreted their new role as cultural emblems brought by the rise in Germanic nationalism, which inspired the new translation of Tacitus’s Germania, describing wild people who only wore a cape of animal’s hide, as the first proud inhabitants of the Germanic lands (for example, fig. 2) .[xxviii] In this way, Tacitus’s Germania transformed the wild man into the romanticised version of the noble savage during the German Renaissance.[xxix] They lived a simple and virtuous life. They needed no written laws because they had good morals and rejected the habits of outsiders.[xxx] The nobility and urban elite began to romanticise the wild man for their strength and freedom from the rules of society.[xxxi] Conrad Celtis described a counterpart to early Germans in the Lapps. He described them as speechless but also that they had not been corrupted with luxury, fame, or wine. ‘Here no jurist twists the law, no doctor accumulates his blood money, and no tonsured man plagues the people’.[xxxii] Fig. 2. Source: archive.org On a playing card by Master ES printed in c. 1461, a wild woman is depicted with a unicorn (fig. 3). While wild men overpower the unicorn with their bold ferocity, it was the wild woman’s sexual purity that allowed her to get close to the unicorn. A tale of the unicorn captured only by pure virgin maidens arose during the Middle Ages. This led to the unicorn being represented as a sign of purity and thus underscores the image of the wild woman as epitome of the noble savage.[xxxiii] A sense of innocence accompanies their ignorance of the civilized world. Playing cards usually consisted of four suits with illustrations of plants, animals, and heraldic symbols. The wild woman with the unicorn is one of four cards surviving in the animal suit by Master ES.[xxxiv] Richard Bernheimer suggests that the images on the cards represent a hierarchy.[xxxv] Therefore, it places the wild man and woman in the realm of animals.[xxxvi] This is plausible since this wild woman represents the Queen of the Animals. However, her clasping grip of the unicorn who is dwarfed by the wild woman shows her dominate position in nature. Fig. 3. Master ES, Wild Woman and Unicorn (Queen of Animals from the Small Playing) c. 1461, Engraving on Playing Card, 10.5 x 7.3cm (Sheet); 9.8 x 6.cm (Plate), New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art. The wild man also featured in more than 200 coat-of-arms across Europe, most of which were in German lands.[xxxvii] They were particularly popular during the second-half of the fifteenth century.[xxxviii] Interestingly, the wild man was illustrated beside coats-of-arms of popes and kings as their protector or guardian of the coat-of-arms despite the wild man’s history as a heretical being.[xxxix] Roundel prints of coat-of-arms were likely used as templates for goldsmiths or glassmakers who would fill in the family crest.[xl] It has also been suggested that these roundels were used by the middle class to emulate the coat-of-arms of the nobility. The templates were used as a substitute for commissioned coat-of-arms.[xli] In Wild Woman and Heraldic Shield, c. 1490 (fig. 4), a wild woman suckling her baby is reminiscent of the Madonna and child. This image reveals the redemption of women through childbirth for their responsibility for Original Sin (Genesis 3.16). She also serves as an emblem for fertility for the family whose shield she holds to ensure the family line. Fig. 4. Martin Schongauer, Wild Woman and Heraldic Shield, Colmar, c. 1490, Engraving, 7.7 diam. New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Return to the Garden of Eden The image of the noble savage in turn influenced the idyllic images of the wild family. Master bxg’s Wild Folk Family (c. 1475) parallel Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve who were portrayed in animal skins after ‘The Fall’ are akin to the hairiness of the wild family.[xlii] In Master bxg’s print stands the tree of knowledge, overlooked by an owl in the background, symbolising potential danger as owls served as a symbol for evil.[xliii] A rabbit bounds towards a forest in the top left. Rabbits were used as a symbol for fertility and has been depicted in images of Adam and Eve during ‘The Fall’ and thus can symbolise carnal knowledge. The wild woman’s long hair symbolises her fertility and thus her unbridled sexuality and parallels with the depiction of Eve in the Garden of Eden with long, loose flowing hair.[xliv] Although the representation of the wild family references Original Sin, they are still in a state of nature and innocence and their ignorance of God therefore cannot constitute sin.[xlv] However, it also provides a mirror of the tensions between good and evil within German Renaissance society – between temptation and godliness.[xlvi] The wild family not only recall Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, but also the image of the Holy Family who were often represented against the backdrop of the wilderness.[xlvii] In a comparative print in Hans Leonhart Schäufelein’s, Wild Man and Wild Woman originally printed in c.1520 (fig.5), the wild family are still hairy and naked, although they wear fig leaves to help preserve their modesty. The fig leaves allude to after ‘The Fall’ in the Garden of Eden once they have eaten from the tree of knowledge and realise their nakedness and feel shame. In this way, the sins of the past are not completely forgotten. However, the image lies in opposite to the unbridled sexuality of the earlier idea of the wild man and woman. One son attempts to place a leash around a domesticated dog, which further symbolises a new domesticity to the wild family.[xlviii] Despite its clear reference to Original Sin, it illustrates an idyllic family scene, away from the corrupting influences of ‘civilised life’.[xlix] Fig. 5. After Hans Schäufelein, Klag der wilden Holtzleüt, uber die ugetrewen Welt, verse by Hans Sachs, printed by Hans Guldenmundt, Augsburg, 1560 Coloured woodcut, 20.2 x 24.2cm (sheet), 20.2 x 15.2 cm (borderline) The British Museum, London. This image was later copied with an addition of a poem written by Hans Sachs in 1530. In the poem the wild folk lament against the corruption and evils of society such as the lust for wealth, flesh, and violence. The wild folk in Sachs’ verse have chosen to discard worldly pleasures to live the simple and pure life in nature. The verse ends with the wild folk declaring that they will be happy to return to civilisation once the world ‘see the light’.[l] This verse parallels the wild man with ascetic monks whose wildness is a temporary state and who seek redemption away from civilisation. Wild Man as Saints The tales of saints who found redemption in the wilderness by discarding worldly pleasures, growing hair on their body and then returning to civilization and shedding their hair once more became co-opted with the image of wild men and women during the Renaissance. Many stories of anchorites parallel with others, to the point that they can become indistinguishable.[li] Onuphrius is one of the better-known ascetic saints who lived during the fourth century. Paying penance, he lived in a cave for sixty years, as wild men and women were thought to do. His clothes wore away and he grew a thick coat of hair to protect his body against the elements (fig. 6).[lii] Saint John Chrysostom similarly went into the wilderness to pay penance and vowed to crawl on all fours until he found favour with God.[liii] Ascetic saints were similarly depicted with bare knees as wild men and women were also believed to crawl on all fours like an animal, wearing away the hair. In Leben der Heiligen (1499), where Saint John Chrysostom is depicted as covered in thick hair and crawling on all fours in the forest is described as an ‘abominable animal,’ despite being depicted with a halo around his head.[liv] Ascetic saints were therefore reduced to a beast just as the wild men and women had traditionally been as they are seen as degenerating into an animal who grow hair on their body and ate raw food.[lv] In this way, the figure of the hairy monstrosity was able to find redemption, at least in part, cast as the model of repentance. Fig. 6. Anonymous, Saint Onuphrius, c. 1480-1500, woodcut, 14.6 x 11.4cm, New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. During the German Renaissance, Saint Mary Magdalene, who was regarded for her beauty,[lvi] was frequently represented covered in hair like a wild woman. Her hairy image found wide devotion through the southern Germanic region.[lvii] In a tale originating in the tenth century, Mary was set adrift by non-believers and by divine guidance found her way to the south of France where she preached and converted the locals. She lived in a cave in Saint-Baume, Provence, paying penance for her former sinful life.[lviii] The name Magdalene means manens rea or ‘remaining in guilt’.[lix] She grew hair all over her body in the same way as a wild woman. In her cave she remained silent and when a hermit approached her, she had trouble speaking after being secluded for so long, not unlike the wild man and woman.[lx] Every hour, angels would ascent her to the heavens where she would gain nourishment as she was so remote that there was no food or water.[lxi] Mary’s ascension into the heavens as a hairy wild woman was a theme in German Renaissance prints and is illustrated in a print by Hans Baldung Grien (c.1484-1545) in c.1512 (fig. 7 ).[lxii] Her ascent represents her body’s transcendence from both worldly pleasures and the wilderness. Fig. 7. Hans Baldung Grien, St Mary Magdalen, c.1512, Woodcut, Sheet: 13 × 8.7 cm Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The image and identity of Mary Magdalene during the Renaissance is believed to be conflated with the story of Saint Mary of Egypt who lived in the fifth century. Mary has long been thought to be a prostitute. She travelled to Jerusalem where she became aware of her sins when she could not enter a Church as she was held back by a spiritual ‘force’. She saw the image of the Virgin Mary staring back at her and realised why she could not enter. Mary of Egypt, the antithesis to the Virgin prayed to her for forgiveness and renounced her life of sin.[lxiii] Mary went to live alone in the desert to repent for forty-seven years.[lxiv] The desert was a place to be tested against sins, for punishment, but also for contemplation and redemption.[lxv] Both Mary of Egypt and Mary Magdalene have both similarly been depicted covered by hair that represents their place outside of civilization and discarding worldly possessions. It was also used to provide modesty to discern from their previous occupation of the flesh.[lxvi] As seen in the print by Lucas Cranach the Elder, The Ecstasy of St. Mary of Egypt (1506) (fig. 8) who was thought to levitate in prayer,[lxvii] is similar to the composition of prints of Mary Magdalene being accented by angels. The naked saints signified the return to nature before ‘The Fall’ in the Garden of Eden.[lxviii] Despite this earlier legend, Mary Magdalene was not depicted in art as covered in hair until the mid-fifteenth century but was rather naked with her long hair covering her modesty. The image of the hairy Mary Magdalene was therefore believed to originate in fifteenth-century Germany.[lxix] The detail of the hairy Mary Magdalene was also not included in the popular thirteenth century The Golden Legend by Jacobus de Voragine (c.1230-1298) that combined the tales of Magdalene. Her nudity was implied as the hermit who visited her passed her a garment to wear.[lxx] The hair covering Mary of Egypt was also a later addition to the story and also does not appear in The Golden Legend.[lxxi] She similarly does not seem to appear in art until the fifteenth-sixteenth centuries.[lxxii] The same can be said of other saints who turn into a wild man, at least temporarily such as Saint John Chrysostom.[lxxiii] This suggests ascetic saints who grew hair over their body was a contemporary idea that arose at the same time that the wild man and woman were popular in Renaissance prints. However, as Bartra notes, the idea of the hairy ascetic saint derived from Ancient Egypt when long haired hermits sought solitude in the desert.[lxxiv] Fig. 8. Lucas Cranach the Elder, The Ecstasy of St. Mary of Egypt, 1506 Woodcut, 24.4 × 14.2 cm, The Met, New York, Wild Man in Reformation Propaganda The image of the wild man was also co-opted into the Protestant Reformation in Germany and has been used by both Protestants and Catholics in contradictory ways. The engraving of The Pope as a Wild Man was created by Melchior Lorck (c.1526/7-1583) in 1545. This wild man with characteristic thick body hair with bare knees is a hybrid with long rat-like tail. Perched on top of his head is the three-tiered crown of the pope, but the last tier is a tower of excrement. Beneath his crown are ass ears, which represent folly and dishonesty. The ass’s ears allude to the myth of Apollo who made Midas grow the ears of a donkey to tag him for his dishonesty.[lxxv] On his back appears to be a bat with stretched out wings, which is a symbol for the Devil.[lxxvi] The wild man carries his characteristic wooden club, but this one has three cross branches at the end to represent the papal cross. He holds onto the papal key that is shattered at the end, which is a sign that the temporal powers of the papacy have been broken.[lxxvii] From his mouth pours a stream of toads and reptiles. This appears to reference the beast, the dragon, and the false prophet who release four foul spirits. A version of this image was discovered cast on a canon of Protestant troops captured during the Schmalkaldic War.[lxxviii] Melchior Lorck, The Pope as Wild Man, c. 1545, Etching, 22.9 × 19.4 cm, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Kupferstichkabinett Conclusion In Renaissance Germany, complexity existed in people’s relationship with the wilderness. It both conjured up images of the Garden of Eden before ‘The Fall’ as well as the dangers that may lurk beyond. The wild man and woman were just as complex and represented sinfulness, but also redemption and innocence. As Merry Wiesner-Hanks concludes ‘beast, saint, or hero? the wild man was all three’.[lxxix] A closer look at images of the wild man reveals their complexity. There was not a simple evolution between a demonised creature associated with cannibalism and rape to the holy saint. In the age of the apocalypse, the wild man and woman provide a reminder of Original Sin and the need for repentance at a time of social reform. In this way, the hairy woodland creature is not entirely absolved. 2023.06.03 04:17 Toastr__ Illmatic is overrated

Not that I hate Illmatic, I think it deserves a lot of the praise it gets. I just dislike how it overshadows the rest of his discography and it definitely isn't his best album.
Illmatic is masterpiece. The beats are classic, the raps are insane, there really isn't a bad song. Nas was 21 when he dropped the album and he continued to grow as a person and an artist.
We see his growth in It Was Written. He still provides us with the same great lyricism, songs like The Message showcase this. Songs like I Gave You Power showcase his amazing storytelling ability, that song still sends shivers down my spine. This album is as good as Illmatic, and I'd say it is better because I think the highs of It was Written hit a lot harder tha the highs of Illmatic.
Fast Forward to Stillmatic(Nastradamus is eh and I am... is also mid), I think this album is on the same level as Illmatic. Nas has grown from where he was 7 years ago, we can see that right in the intro. I love songs Ether(just overall great rapping), Got Ur Self A Gun, You're Da Man, and One Mic. I love how he takes on more serious topics towards the end of the album. It is just an all around solid album.
Perhaps my hottest take, I think God's Son is greatest hip hop album ever made. I love how personal he gets on the album. His rapping is in rare form, consider the first four songs on the album. The intro track is phenomenal, the cross is insane, I feel like it is tough to demolish an Em beat the way that he did, I don't need to say much about Made You Look, and Last Real N- Alive is so amazing, it is such a raw song and gives a look at the issues within the NYC rap scene. The final stretch where talks about his mother is also perfect imo.
Finally, KD2, this is my second favorite Nas album. I love this album, once again he is in Rare Form, and the chemistry between him and hitboy has never been better. I love the perspective he has to offer on this album.
All in all, I feel like most people just listen to Illmatic and that's it. Nas has much more to offer, and I think it is unfair to only consider his first album.
P.S Instead of shit talking the state of this subreddit, why don't just talk about rap.

2023.06.03 03:24 justsara7991 8 month old M cat licking bum raw

My cat has been licking his butt, and it's now raw. He's up to date on all vaccines, he's indoor cat, doesn't smell bad, and acting completely normal other than the licking.
I cleaned up a bit of dried blood and put a cone on him for now and I'm off all weekend so I can keep an eye on him. Is there anything else I can do? He hates car rides so I'd hate to bring him in for no reason...

2023.06.03 03:10 justsara7991 8 month old cat licked butt raw?

My 8 month old kitty has been licking his butt a lot, it's now raw and there's a tiny bit of dried blood. I've cleaned it up a bit, and put a cone on him.
He gets super stressed out on drives so I'd rather avoid a vet visit if possible. Is there anything else I can do? If it was an anal gland issue I'd smell something right?

2023.06.03 03:00 04Fedor Firestorm 120: Book the first edition of a new AEW tournament

Firestorm 120: Book the first edition of a new AEW tournament
Prelude
CM Punk returns for the launch of Collision as expected and from the start of Collision to the beginning of this booking he does not interact with MJF or the elite at all. He doesn't even go on dynamite. Instead, he rekindles his feud with Samoa Joe and is still unable to defeat The Samoan Submission Machine.
Wednesday November 8th Dynamite
On the previous week's dynamite it is hyped that Tony Khan has an absolutely massive statement to make. He announces that there will be a one time only Pay Per View to take place on December 31st called AEW: Endgame. He talks about how MJF is holding the AEW World Championship hostage with his contract running down. He announces a tournament to take place culminating on the winter is coming episode of Dynamite where the winner will challenge MJF at endgame. The segment comes to an end as the bracket is flashed on the screen.

Bracket
Saturday November 11th Collision
To kick off the tournament we see a close match between Samoa Joe and Malakai Black. Most of the match is striking based between the two. However in the end it is Joe that is able to nail a massive muscle buster on Black to put him away.
Wednesday November 15th Dynamite
It is on dynamite that we see an absolute WAR between Miro and Keith Lee. The two bring out the best in each other and after 12 minutes of pure brutality Lee is unable to life Miro up for the spirit bomb and the Game Over seals his fate.
Saturday November 18th Collision
In an absolutely massive episode of Collision we see two first round matchups on the same show. The first is Bryan Danielson vs Eddie Kingston. Throughout the match we see Danielson consistently fighting from behind which should get him more of a face reaction as he is being built back up. In a callback to their classic in 2021 we see Danielson once again have Kingston stuck in a triangle choke only for Kingston to pick him up and slam him to the mat. This however is not enough as Danielson eventually comes out on top with 2 running knees in succession to get the three count.
Later in the night we see CM Punk take on Andrade el Idolo. In a surprisingly one sided match Punk is able to neutralize the offense of Andrade and he gets the win with a GTS.
Wednesday November 22nd Dynamite
The first tournament matchup of the night is between Roderick Strong and Adam Page. In a reverse of their first matchup a decade prior, Page is the favorite while Strong is the one who is trying to make a run up the card. This time however, Page will not be denied and he is able to dispatch Strong with a Buckshot lariat to advance.
The second matchup of the night is in the main event and it is another chapter of the Moxley/Omega saga(their first matchup since the cage match months ago). This time Omega is the one that comes out on top after he nails Moxley with a One Winged Angel.
Saturday November 25th Collision
Adam Cole and Pac main event the show and the two go all out. At the end of the match Pac misses the Black Arrow and Cole capitalizes with a german and he finally finishes the match with the Panama Sunrise.
Wednesday November 29th Dynamite
Here we see a match between Claudio Castagnoli and Darby Allin. A hungry Darby comes out with something to prove in an attempt to get even with MJF. Despite controlling most of the contest he still falls short to the brutal offense that is displayed by Claudio.
Updated Bracket
Saturday December 2nd Collision
To kick off the second round we see a match between Danielson and Miro. This match closes the show and gets 30 minutes. To start the match, Miro unleashes his mighty power, violently shoving Bryan down multiple times, electrifying the crowd with each forceful blow. But Bryan refuses to back down, retaliating with lightning-fast strikes of his own. But when it seems like a comeback is possible, Miro launches a devastating knee strike that sends Bryan hurtling out of the ring.
Showing his resilience, Bryan recovers and launches a barrage of thunderous kicks to Miro's body. Miro charges forward, but Bryan expertly counters with a waistlock. However, Miro's sheer strength propels him out of the hold, executing a bone-crushing running shoulder tackle. Bryan refuses to be defeated, sprinting off the ropes and delivering a jaw-dropping clothesline followed by a breathtaking dropkick that sends Miro sprawling out of the ring. Bryan's determination pushes him to the edge as he prepares for a daring suicide dive, but Miro snatches him out of midair. With incredible force, Miro executes a release belly-to-belly suplex on the unforgiving floor. The crowd is in awe as Miro ruthlessly hurls Bryan into the solid steel steps. Miro follows up with not one, but two thunderous suplexes, sending shockwaves through the arena.
Miro seizes control, applying a dominating chinlock for what seems like an eternity. With the turnbuckle as his weapon, Miro mercilessly whips Bryan into it, shaking the entire ring. However, Bryan refuses to be defeated, summoning his last reserves of strength to deliver consecutive running dropkicks. Yet, Miro proves his resilience, responding with a brutal Samoan Drop, leaving the crowd on the edge of their seats. Miro showboats to the crowd which gives Bryan an opening. Unleashing a flurry of ferocious kicks to Miro's chest, Bryan momentarily gains the upper hand. But Miro, unbowed, catches him in his grip, only for Bryan to ingeniously counter into a lightning-fast kneebar submission. Miro teeters on the edge of defeat, almost succumbing to Bryan's relentless assault. But Miro is able to summon his inner strength, powering out of the submission and delivering a gutwrench suplex. As the crowd erupts, Miro follows up with a jaw-dropping release German Suplex.
In a breathtaking display of athleticism, Bryan counters a second Miro suplex attempt, landing gracefully on his feet and he delivers a roundhouse kick to Miro's head. Bryan relentlessly pummels Miro with a barrage of knee strikes to the head, stomping with unyielding fury. The crowd is on its feet, chanting in sheer admiration as Bryan attempts his signature running knee strike, only to be caught mid-air by Miro, who executes a bone-rattling Powerbomb. Miro, overcome with emotion, points skyward, seemingly communing with his divine power. His fervor reaches its peak as he locks in the fearsome Game Over submission. Bryan, however, refuses to surrender, summoning every ounce of fight in his body to crawl towards the bottom rope. Undeterred, Miro savagely stomps on Bryan's back, determined to enforce his dominance. Once again, he applies the Game Over submission, but Bryan summons his remaining strength, rolling over and trapping Miro in the LeBell Lock, targeting his left arm and head. Miro fights back with a furious onslaught of punches. Bryan refuses to relent, transitioning seamlessly into the same triangle that gave Eddie Kingston problems, delivering thunderous elbows to Miro's head. The intensity reaches a fever pitch, but Miro resorts to desperate measures, using eye-gouging tactics to break free. Undeterred, Bryan retaliates with punishing kicks to Miro's body, but the Bulgarian Brute absorbs the blows and counters with a ruthless kick to Bryan's ribs. The two warriors ascend the turnbuckle, and in a breathtaking display of agility, Bryan executes a heart-stopping DDT off the top rope
As the crowd erupts in a frenzy of anticipation, Bryan seizes the moment, poised to deliver the final blow. With a surge of adrenaline coursing through his veins, he unleashes a running knee with unmatched precision, colliding with Miro's skull. The impact is thunderous, and the Bulgarian Brute crumples to the canvas. The referee dives into action, sliding into position to administer the three-count. The entire arena holds its breath as the referee's hand strikes the mat once... twice... and with a deafening roar, the final count echoes throughout the arena.
Danielson is overjoyed with his victory and he cuts a promo after the match which redeems him in the eyes of the fans.
Wednesday December 6th Dynamite
It is here that we see Adam Page and Kenny Omega go to battle once again. All the tension that they tried to put to the side resurfaces. As the deafening cheers of the crowd fill the arena, anticipation hangs heavy in the air. Both men, having shared a tumultuous history, find themselves standing on the precipice of an opportunity that could alter the course of their careers. As the bell tolls, a moment of hesitation lingers between Page and Omega. Their eyes meet, conveying the unspoken bond they once shared, as well as the lingering memories of their past battles. Their admiration for one another tempered by the overwhelming desire to claim victory and secure a shot at MJF. Both of them wanting be AEW's hero.
The match begins with a cautious approach, each wrestler studying the other's movements, searching for a weakness to exploit. Page, with his cowboy spirit, displays his trademark agility and strength, executing flawless suplexes and lightning-fast strikes. Omega, the virtuoso of the squared circle, responds with masterful counters and breathtaking high-flying maneuvers, leaving the audience in awe. As the match progresses, the hesitation slowly fades away, replaced by an intense competitive fire that burns within both men. Page's determination to prove himself worthy of the championship opportunity pushes him to new heights, delivering awe-inspiring dives from the top rope and bone-crushing power moves that send shockwaves through the ring.
Omega, showing a side of him that we have not seen since Full Gear, demonstrates why he is considered one of the greatest wrestlers of this generation. With his signature V-Triggers and mind-bending submission holds, he takes control of the match, methodically wearing down Page. The crowd's emotions surge as they witness the clash of these titans, torn between their admiration for Page's underdog spirit and their respect for Omega's undeniable skill.
In a heart-wrenching moment, Page summons his last ounce of strength, refusing to succumb to defeat. With a surge of adrenaline, he unleashes a flurry of hard-hitting strikes, stunning Omega and igniting a glimmer of hope within the crowd. But Omega, driven by his insatiable thirst for victory, fights back with unyielding ferocity, displaying his arsenal of devastating maneuvers that have made him a force to be reckoned with. As the final moments of the match approach, both competitors are pushed to their physical and emotional limits. The crowd, fully invested in the narrative unfolding before them, erupts with fervor, their cheers echoing throughout the arena. In a moment of sheer brilliance, Omega executes the One-Winged Angel and he pins Page to the canvas for the three-count.
The sound of the bell signals Omega's triumph, and the crowd rises to their feet in a mixture of admiration and bittersweet emotions. Page, though defeated, is given a standing ovation for his incredible effort, his heart and determination shining through the loss. Omega, a mix of relief and satisfaction, stands tall as the victor, knowing that he must be the one to dethrone MJF.

You could go either way with who wins at endgame. I would probably lean towards it going to Omega but there could be a great story with the whole MJF contract business.

2023.06.03 02:39 HardstuckBronzeRank Am I disabled?

I started playing Valorant a little over a year ago, having had considerable FPS experience in the past (I sucked at all of them). My first rank was Bronze 1, I oscillated between bronze and silver for a bit, but I never really got any better. Eventually I got close to htting level 100 with my rank still in silver, and I quit the game for what I estimate to be around 6 months.
When smurfs come to play in my lobbies, it really bothers me that a lot of them probably aren't even as experienced as I am, but I'm still so much worse than them anyway. After the hiatus I began by playing the odd game here and there, I did my placements once and landed in Iron 3, and made my way up to Bronze. I had this one game where I got flamed pretty badly about how hardstuck I am, I'm not even sure what was so special about it since it's not at all an unusual occurrence for me, but for some reason that game really had an impact on me. I decided to stop going for kills, forget fun, just to focus on protecting or defusing the spike at all costs, to get the wins I needed to get my elo up to where it should be by now. It sort of worked at first. About a week ago I actually hit my peak of gold (at an embarrassing level of 100+ though), but really it was more like touching gold, because almost as soon as I made it, this stopped working and I began a rapid plunge back to bronze, where I am now.
And even here I feel sort of boosted. My K/D is almost always negative, everyone else is just so much faster than me, they can headshot me before I even get a chance to fire. No matter what I do I can't seem to contribute to my team at all, I make so many stupid decisions despite trying really hard not to. And the chokes that would be once in a lifetime embarrassments for most other people happen pretty much every game for me. I recently died to an opponent's Classic (save round) after missing every shot in an entire Vandal mag.
That is to say, I'm almost level 120, but I'm still exceptionally bad at Valorant, I can't even keep up with bronze players. It seems like my raw cognitive abilities are limiting me, this wouldn't be the first time either, I also suck at pretty much every other game because of this and have a lot of difficulties in real life too, everything feels so hard to me. I'm just wondering if there's any way to test whether I have the potential to ever be good at this game, or whether I'm just wasting my time trying, because it seems to me that this goes beyond being bad, that it might be a sign of an actual problem with my brain. There's no reason Bronze players should be able to demolish someone who has invested this much time in the game.

Thoughts on this Chromastone Redesign? +Lore
I love Chromastone, but I figured I could give them some of Classic's weirdness while leaning into the petrosapian messiah thing. I decided one way to make the connection stronger was to give them two eyes that only merge into one when they are actually restoring their home world. As a bonus, it helps to distinguish them from Feedback. The rest of the time they can make precise incisions with their hands and transform energy into "chromatic energy" or whatever. I like to imagine that the energy they output is actually transformed and made more orderly, like information. The idea is that their body is a library of all the petrosapian lives, stored fractally like a crystal computer, and shining a light or any kind of energy through projects their souls into raw power. In a way they would project life beams, energy with the power of a civilization. Also, yeah, no more feet. They look more regal that way. They also get a faceplate that slides up to resemble their Omniverse design and look more knightly. You should never compromise on good ideas ;)

Right now the Sun is having more and more profound epigenetic effects on the human genome. This is changing the expression of genes & spearheading the Ascension of consciousness taking place globally. This is the return of the Light talked about by ancients. Consciousness/Ether comes from the Sun.
Isotopes are atoms of the same element, that have different numbers of neutrons. A typical Carbon atom has 6 protons, 6 neutrons, and 6 electrons -- 666. This is the "heavy" Carbon that is binding us here physically and mentally.
Radiation from the Sun is both stimulating RNA & mitochondria to express genes & process energy differently, and also mutating Carbon atoms comprising living beings from Carbon-12 to Carbon 7, displacing 5 of the neutrons in the nucleus of the Carbon atoms, rendering the Light-like Carbon-7. this dissipation of neutrons is the classic "halo" or "Aura" of Light that has been reported around great Sages across Time, something formerly only available with decades of dedication. this is why things are getting a little wild here on Earth.
You can accelerate this process by eating real foods ripe with the Cosmic Carbon that is restructuring the DNA. Fast from the heavy foods & fake ingredients...
restructure the body & DNA with fruits; vegetables; mushrooms like cordyceps, lions mane, reishi, oysters, etc; chlorella & spirulina algae; shilajit; and many more mushrooms & herbs that I can discuss...
but ESPECIALLY Euchema cottonii Sea moss.
On top of having nearly all of the trace minerals & elements the body needs, as well as many vitamins & amino acids, the sea moss is mostly comprised of a compound known as carrageenan, which affords it its chain-like structure molecularly, and it's gel like properties on the macro scale.
Carrageenan makes the moss into a gelatinous matrix that protects the important nutrients & phytocompounds from reacting with things in the body. It's sulphur backbone flushes it with electrons ready to be dumped into the system to neutralize free radicals.
The moss goes through like a sponge, absorbing heavy metals & exchanging them with its stockpile of trace minerals intentionally missing from the modern diet.
Modern medicine is mimicking its ability to protect sensitive compounds that need to be delivered to cells in-tact.
Carrageenan has 3 isomers that are all present in the sea moss... but the most important is Lambda carrageenan... The Light.... this isomer stores Sunlight -- which is Etheric Consciousness -- in the bonds of its carbon chains. You are literally ingesting Cosmic Consciousness.
I work with a PhD in plant & soil sciences who is also one of those Old Forest Souls they warned you about... one of those ones ripped straight from the Ether itself...
after eating the moss with him for a year now, I know that it is here to combat what is happening on Earth. It energizes you. It re-mineralizes you. It offers immunity, and nourishes the hair, skin, & nails with its collagen content.
Please eat these things... but source them properly & make sure you clean the moss in an acidic wash if you get it raw from the ocean.
The other thing we must do to reset the DNA is spend time in Nature. The forests are like essential oil factories. They're constantly pumping out tons of the same terpenes in cannabis that relax you. The forests are also symphonies of the organic Etheric spiraling that we are trying to mimic with electroculture. When you spend time there, as your cells divide, they are coming into fruition with this as the background music.
Instead of the Artifical lights & sounds skewering the Ether, you are regenerating yourself in a place where the Cosmic spin isn't being interrupted... that Fibonacci spiral, that signature of Source Consciousness...
people have known for thousands of years that grounding the skin to the surface of the Earth benefits mood, cognition, and general wellness. We have been insulated from the charge of the Earth with rubber and plastic. The electrons from the Earth will flow through you like a circuit to neutralize the charge on free radicals before they can oxidize your cells & DNA.
the dyes, preservatives, stabilizers, and other heavy metal directly oxidize the DNA & degrade the telomeres, akin to the cap on a shoelace beginning to deteriorate, allowing the string to unravel. The DNA is vibrating & negatively charged. It has an affinity for all of the positively charged transition metals they pump into the food & air. We need things to clear this gunk out. Chlorella/spirulina tablets. Activated charcoal. And euchema cottonii.
Go out into the Sun... Allow the positive electricity from our Star to flow down through the Crown & through the photo receptors in the Pineal Gland..
Walk out into the Forest, wearing nothing on your feet... Allow the negative Magnetism of the Earth to course through your Roots...
This creates the Constructive Interference with the natural spiraling of the Ether, that base frequency that heals all...
This is a time when humanity needs to seize the reins in this epigenetic struggle
The people running the show are incredibly smart. theyve reverse engineered reality right down to the physics. Which is why you'll (rightfully) find a lot of intelligent skeptics throughout groups like these: The subtle energies have been completely slandered and hidden.
Consciousness comes from the Sun. The Sun is increasing in intensity more and more, spurring the mass awakening that is drawing people back to nature & a sense of altruism for Earth & humanity. This is what people have waited for for so long. The Sun is going to give a little Celestial Sneeze that will vanquish the Evil from this planet. A Conscious Plasma Event that will restore humanity to its Cosmic status. This is why things have been getting more and more intense on Earth.
This is a time when the collective consciousness is remembering vast amounts of forgotten & hidden knowledge... the End of one cycle...
And the Beginning of Another

Otis lays out both members of Vahalla and gets ready for the Caterpillar onto fellow legal man, Erick. Before he can hit it however he is attacked by Ivar who clotheslines himself and Otis over the top rope. After this the ref points to Chad who enters the ring but is quickly attacked by Erick. Chad then rolls up Erick for the quick pin and wins. The announcers are confused until they see an instant replay of Chad tagging himself in as Otis went over the top rope.
The next entrants in the match are Pretty Deadly. The two handsome fellas come out of the crowd attacking a wounded Chad Gable. Otis (after being helped up by Maxxine) jumps in the ring and evening the score. Otis throws both Pretty Deadly members out of the ring, then stands on the apron. Chad then rises and tags in Otis. Gable then does a suicide dive onto both Elton Prince and Kit Wilson. He then throws Elton into the ring and tags in Otis, who hits a Caterpillar onto Elton for the 1.2.3
The next team to enter are The Creed Brothers. They come out to the ring and have a classic wrestling match with Alpha Academy. The two teams show respect for one another while they show their amateur wrestling acumen. With Gable still nursing injuries from his previous 2 matches. Towards the end of the match, The Creed’s isolate Gable once again. They pick apart the leader of Alpha Academy as Otis is forced to watch on. Gable gains a moment of rest after a big german suplex onto Julius. Chad then gets the hot tag to Otis who clears house until being picked apart by the Creeds. The Creeds lift Otis up for the big finish but Chad makes the save pushing Julius off the top and hitting Butch with a German. This leaves Butch in the ring with Otis allowing the big man to hit another Caterpillar for the win.
The next team is Imperium who show zero sympathy for Alpha Academy. They systematically beat down both Otis and Chad with neither man showing any quit. Once Chad becomes the legal man Imperium begins to dominate the match. Otis looks on with a sad look watching his friend be torn apart by Imperium. Finally after minutes of agonizing pain, Otis throws in the towel ending the match and Chad’s suffering.
The final team to enter the match is Brawling Brutes; they immediately begin to brawl with Imperium. The ref attempts to separate the two rival teams to no use. Finally some order is restored when Ridge and Giovanni fight to the outside and up the ramp. This leaves Butch and Ludwig in the ring. After a quick back and forth, Butch seems to have Ludwig ready for the Bitter End. When Ludwig scratches Butch’s eyes, rolling him up for the 1.2.3 Imperium will meet Sami and KO on RAW.
Roman Reigns vs LA Knight for the Undisputed WWE Championship
Build
On the main event of the Smackdown after Extreme Rules(A show that didn’t feature Roman Reigns) LA Knight, (A man who has gained a cult following in recent months with great selling T shirts and YEAH becoming an ever popular phrase) is seen in the ring with a microphone “Extreme Rules was a good show (Crowd exclaims YEAH) but something important was missing. The missing piece to the puzzle was our World Champ, Roman Reigns (The crowd rains down boos at the mention of his name) Roman is an interesting case of nepotism… YEAH, because no matter what he did for years he couldn’t gain the admiration of the WWE universe. Hell, I’m a douche and it took me a month… YEAH. The top brass in this company wanted him to succeed for years but he never took off…until he took advantage of his family. Well I got to thinking that sounds like a great idea. YEAH. So I decided I’d use MY family to get what I want YEAH. (LA Knight walks to the barricade telling some front row fans to jump after a bit the ring is full of fans) Now Roman Reigns, I challenge your boring ass to a WWE Championship match. YEAH. (Roman appears on the titantron and says) “The fans may love you Eli, but the fans loved Cody too and you saw what happened to him. You're nothing more than a catchphrase. But I accept your challenge”(Roman turns to Paul) “This will be the easiest match yet.” LA Knight responds with “I might just be a catchphrase… but at least it's a good one. YEAH!!!!! (The men and women inside the ring respond with a loud YEAH) The show goes off the air as they exchange YEAHS.
The two men exchange verbal blows throughout the build with Roman dismissing Knight as a fad. Knight continues to gain support from the fans despite his cocky tendencies. This culminates in a contract signing on the go-home Smackdown. Where LA Knight jumps an unexpecting Roman putting him through the table to a large pop.
Match

Towards the end of the match, Knight reverses a Superman Punch into a big roll up. 1.2…kickout Roman spears Knight. 1.2…kick out the crowd loses it as Roman does the same. Kevin says, “We helped you because we hate the Judgement Day more than we hate you… by just a little bit!” All of a sudden, the lights go out and the Judgement Day attack. Sami, Seth, and Kevin seem to weather the storm until Rhea Ripley gets involved. Judgement Day begins to take control when Becky Lynch’s music hits. She comes down to the ring with a chair, saving her husband and his two tag partners.
In the following weeks, the two groups continue to brawl until the only way to contain them is a War Games Match.
Match
Becky demands to be first for her group while Damian Priest is first for Judgement Day. Damian Priest second guesses going after Becky allowing Becky to hit him with a Man Handle Slam. The next entrant is for the Judgement Day. It’s Rhea Ripley. She tells Damian to back off as she begins to dominate Becky. The next entrant is Kevin Owens. He comes into the ring and stuns both Damian and Rhea Ripley. The score is now even with Rhea and Damian vs Kevin and Becky. The next man to enter is Dominik. He comes in with a pair of brass knuckles, hitting Kevin, then allowing Rhea to hit Becky with them. This allows the Judgement Day to dominate Kevin and Becky. The next person to come in is Seth. This levels the playing field; three on three. The last member to enter for the Judgement Day is Finn. He comes in to aide his team by taking the attack to his rival, Seth. Finally, the last man to enter the match is Sami Zayn. He hits the Helluva Kick on all four members of the Judgement Days. Now, pinning can commence. The two teams go all out until only two men are left standing.. Finn Balor and Seth Rollins. The two go blow for blow, with neither man giving up. Out of nowhere, Rhea comes up behind Seth, low blows him and hits him with a Riptide. Finn climbs to the top of the cage to hit a Coop De Grace on Seth, but Becky pulls her husband out of the way. She hits Finn with a Man Handle Slam, then Rhea. She then pins Finn to win the match for her team!

2023.06.02 23:47 smolcrackheadenergy TWICE Between 1&2 Album Review

Intro

To preface this review, I just need to say that this is going to be a very, very long read. Going through it myself just for the fun of it takes around 15 minutes — it's around 6k words of text, including references to the lyrics. So for the best experience, listen to the album beforehand to understand what the hell I was thinking when I wrote this review and set a good amount of time aside.
Another thing to get out of the way: yes, this is 9 months late 😭 I'm not sorry — when I find an album review online it's always around a paragraph per song or, in the cases of full-length albums, not even a scribble. It makes sense from a journalistic perspective, but I want to do this album justice, hence taking 7 months to write out all my thoughts on the album.
This shit is comprehensive, and possibly a bit too overanalyzed and wordy, especially in Talk that Talk and Trouble. Each song review will compose of my commentary going over the song, writing the details I noticed through months of listening along with brief lyrical analyses, followed by a conclusion and a rating. Also, mild swearing warning, I like implementing a touch of "French" when I'm very excited about something because feeling things is what I feel music and art should do. Anyway, onto the review!

Between 1&2 💞

Album Review

TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT
TELL ME WHAT YOU NEED

Talk that Talk 🎙

Lead producer: collapsdone

One of the most perfect TWICE songs.
I think this is one of TWICE’s best-sounding title tracks. Modulated synths, a thrumming bass line, distant bells, shimmering synths — the purpose of this song is to be fun and my god is it excellent at it, like… Sana and Chaeyoung are saying knock-knock-knock and beep-beep-beep as if they’re some kind of car. So much fun.
Further along in verse 1, Dahyun’s voice sounds so full and smooth with that harmony layered on top. Tzuyu coming in with the Yes or Yes, Push & Pull, and 1 to 10 references — these are 5 years of song references in one line. And Jeongyeon closes the pre-chorus accompanied by a rising synth to drop into chorus one. Jeongyeon slays pre-choruses.
The drums accelerate, the synths start blasting, and Jihyo opens to that party of a chorus with her godly vocals,

Tell me what you want
Tell me what you need
A to Z da malhaebwa
But shijageun ireoke have
Talk that talk ttak han madi
Talk that talk L-O-V-E
deullyeojweo ooh
Now now now now now yeah~

During Sana's Talk that Talk~ lines there’s this ascending synth bell that gently rings with the descending melody and it sounds absolutely gorgeous. And the choreography during that part of the chorus is so so so so fun: the talking hands bit, spelling L-O-V-E, concluding with the deullyeojweo ooh! Oh my god Jihyo the deullyeojweo ooh
Have I mentioned this song is fun?
Speeding through verse 2; Chaeyoung’s little part with the cat ears popping in the music video is adorable; Momo’s part with her solo choreography stretching out looks so damn cool; and Dahyun with her replay part sounds so lovely — although I think it sonically sounds a touch random, it makes sense thematically.
And now for this pre-chorus. Mina and Jihyo leading into it sound great BUT JEONGYEON… Now, she is my ult bias, and this pre-chorus sounds almost identical to the first one, but the way she holds that final note, enunciating and holding that now~ for one more beat before the chorus drops sounds so goddamn perfect — the song borderline teeters on a cliff edge. Jeongyeon slays pre-choruses.
Dropping into the second chorus and man, Jihyo powered through that first chorus, but the way Nayeon delivers it just hits different. She has this indescribable “pop” voice (I promise this wasn't on purpose) that stands out and shouts out loud this is THE chorus. I think this is especially apparent in how both lead into their choruses where Jihyo starts the chorus at 120% power while Nayeon waits until [Tell me] WHAT YOU WANT to full-send it. Later in the chorus, she also highlights “malhaebwa” in a similar way.
Another deullyeojweo ooh! Nayeon travels to Narnia, and Mina the engineer strikes again in this heavenly, underwater-esque bridge,

The simple words “I love you”
That’s all I wanna hear
Without hesitation, I’ll go up to you
I’ll make it simple
And just tell you I love you

The word “love” is said for the first time in the song. There’s a funky keyboard-like instrument behind Chaeyoung’s part. Jihyo, Chaeyoung, and Nayeon take the initiative in their lyrics, professing their love before closing the bridge.
And now for the pièce-de-résistance: this final double chorus is exceptional — 40 seconds of crack-laced euphoria; Jihyo switches up the chorus and the choreo, Dahyun comes in with her airy and fluttery “Talk that Talk”, Momo comes out of nowhere with “oh yeah it sounds so good!” — you’re damn right it does, and this is where the song SOARS. Nayeon outright shouts “Tell me what you need,” Jeongyeon sings this line,

han beon deo~ haejweo
geurae banggeum geu mal~

In such an ethereal, warm way where the first line ascends while the second line descends, causing a lull in the song before the finale with Nayeon finishing off the song with the final deullyeojweo ooh! What a party. What a song.

THE GOOD
Needs Work
Core Memory

This song’s chorus is so honest yet so simple; it asks the listener, in this case, the other half of the relationship, to be more upfront and open with their love (never be scared of love) that before the relationship can continue and flourish there has to be a foundation and commitment of love between each other.
This song feels like that bubbly, excited feeling right before, or during, a party, or any event that you really wanted to go to. It simply feels like unadulterated, pure, unbridled joy and elation and escapism. The synths and instrumentation really have to be commended alongside TWICE’s vocals. There’s just a warmth and happiness to this gosh darn song that feels so very TWICE.
Lyrics and theme-wise, if this were to have been TWICE’s last comeback, they’ve once again built upon the theme they've been doing since debut: they’ve done a Bildungsroman, a coming-of-age story.
TWICE debuted with a song about making your crush go ooh ahh. Years later, they started maturing after asking “What is love?” by imagining their crush responding with “yes” when asking them out — and now concluding with the phrase “Talk that talk, [talk that] L-O-V-E”, being upfront with the relationship, wishing their partner to also be happy, to commit to them, to feel the love that they want to impart on them. From gawking like ooh-ahh to talking out your shared love like real adults — to having a true relationship between (one and) two.
And can I just say before finishing off Talk that Talk's review that this is such a fun and repeatable song with many little intricacies hidden in the nonet’s vocals and the song’s production. This is the third draft I’m writing about Talk that Talk and its original word count pretty much quadrupled.
Harkening back to TWICE’s roots by combining mature thinking with youthful character, an incredible ending to look forward to, and just simply being a club-banger that’s easy to listen to, TTT is an easy 10/10.

WATCH ME GO WATCH ME GO
RULE THE WORLD

Queen of Hearts 👑

Lead producer: LDN Noise of SM

If there was one B-side to promote in a live clip, this was a solid choice.
Helmed by LDN Noise going headlong into the Western boy-group rock-band aesthetic, Queen of Hearts is a boom-boom-clap song through and through. The drums are very prominent throughout the song, only giving room to riffs of electric guitar in the chorus to drive and continue the momentum of the music.
And speaking of the chorus, vocal line each got a chorus to flex and they did not fuck around,

You ain’t ready for it
Watch me go~ watch me go~
Rule the world
Know you never doubted baby
I’mma go run the whole universe~

Cymbals crashing, drums booming, and 3MIX belting all just so sound so equally good.

Baby I was born to rule~~
Yeah I’m the queen, I’m the queen
And it’s all because of you~~
That I’m the Queen of Hearts

These looong, held-out notes performed by Jihyo and Nayeon are simply exquisite. Along with the shredding guitar, the drum set coming in full, and the interludes by Dahyun, Momo, and Chaeyoung, this is the part of the song that always, always, gives me goosebumps — it sounds so visceral, so energetic, so fun, so triumphant. Boom-boom clap songs can be hit or miss with people, but there is no denying that the payoff from the first part of the chorus to this second part is worth the wait.
The theme of the song so far has been kind of spread around the song. The chorus alludes to it with the line "And it’s all because of you." Mina and Chaeyoung show more sides of it in the second verse, especially with Mina’s phrase

And now that I’m surrounded by all my girls
We be shining bright like diamonds and pearls

It sounds really lovely — in a very cheesy and affectionate kind of way, as it rightfully should — the song is about the girls and their fans. But the bridge is where the song indeed shows its colours

Screaming out my name
See it in the stage lights
Feel so lucky just to have ya
Cause I know deep down I was meant for something bigger! Greater!
I know you’re seeing what I see
Yeah I’ll be everything you need
I know I’m gonna walk the walk
And talk the talk to be~ [the Queen of Hearts]

This is a song CONCEIVED TO BE PERFORMED FOR THE FANS. It’s meant to be loud. It’s meant to be unapologetic. It’s meant to be sappy. And it’s all the more wonderful for it.
This is the TWICEiest shit ever.
Like Talk that Talk, Queen of Hearts also has a killer closer. The production already started to grow from the bridge, but now the guitarist finally went Super Saiyan and instead of supporting the drums, they both take the centrepiece in tandem, ending the chorus with a little shred.
Then finally, the closing moments of the song even manage to squeeze in some more sappiness.

So thank you for the memories
You’re all the ones who made me~
So thank you for the memories
That I’m the Queen of Hearts

I still can’t believe that this banger is a FAN SONG out of all things. Truly, the TWICEiest shit ever.

THE GOOD
Needs Work
Life Highlight

I love these types of rock songs with how grunge and head-bang-able they are, there is just a certain nostalgic and cheesy quality to them that feels so appropriate and cozy. I don’t love putting them on repeat, because in this case, I do believe there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Perhaps more shredding, maybe even a guitar solo to rock out to, or more gusto from the drums, cymbals, bass guitar, or an accompaniment(!) of ad-libs from 3MIX to support Jihyo’s final chorus? A ONCE can dream of a truly bombastic rock song from TWICE. But then again that distracts from the core of what this song is, which is a fan song undercover as a rock song.
Queen of Hearts has so much sweetness in its lyrics and message that it's overflowing. The drums, guitar, and vocals can be as loud and intricate as they can, but the theme of this song is what makes it special from TWICE’s other rock songs, especially for fans of this type of sound — it’s a 9/10 for me.

I WANNA WANNA WANNA
TAKE YOU TO THE BASICS

Basics 🌈

Sole lyricist credit: Chaeyoung

Quite possibly the jammiest (pun intended) song of the album.
A song written by the Strawberry Princess herself — an event similar in frequency to other artists' releases with her last song being 2020’s silky Handle ItBasics first starts with an understated and dreamy delivery. After the first stanza, however, a bouncy Miami bass line emerges, revealing the true nature of the song: this is a classic summer bop!
This is especially apparent in the first rap.

dareun aedeulgwaneun dalla
Ain’t beggin’ for love
nappeun geon anijana ige naraseo
eodiro twilji molla
Like rainbow bubble gum
geureoni nal kkwak butjabadweo

Syllables are pronounced in a relaxed nature, lines often starting with an "ah" sound, flirty lines in English — this rap features a production full of pop with R&B flourishes and, in my opinion, this is Chaeyoung’s bag. Also, the line rainbow bubblegum is so adorable and so Chaeyoung.

I wanna wanna wanna take it to the basics
da weonhae weonhae weonhae? seodureuji ma Baby
ppeonhae ppeonhae malhae mweohae da al tende
Ah yeah ah yeah ah yeah ah yeah

That chorus is pure pop with a Miami bass backing; you better be bopping your head to the melody, if not booty poppin' to the bassline. Chaeyoung loves rhyming in the first half of the chorus to enhance its catchiness and it's damn incredible: the “wanna”, “weonhae”, and “ppeonhae” all combine to create these imperfect rhymes that continue momentum without feeling repetitive.
After the very Boy With Luv-sounding “ah yeah ah yeah, ah yeah ah yeah” comes an 8-bar split half and half between Chaeyoung and Momo. Coming from the chorus, the production completely cuts out for the first 2 bars. This adds tension; the song yearns to have that bass beat thumping again and all we have in the audio space in those 2 bars is Chaeyoung spitting and she delivered.

taneun deut tteugeoun samak wie
yeppeuge pieonan jangmi gata
joshimseure naege dagaol ttae
nado moreuge jjilleobeoril tende

Translating to:

Above the hot, burning desert
It’s like a rose that bloomed beautifully
When you come to me slowly
I will prick you unconsciously

The rap feels slick, effortless, and confident. Her diction remains sharp when enunciating each syllable but she doesn’t let the flow of her rap waver or build as her 4 bars go by, it’s just smooth consistency throughout. Even the lyrics possess an aura of laid-back collectedness that is just so her.
The things Chaeyoung can do when given her pen.

THE GOOD
Needs Work
Core Memory

This song is summer bliss distilled into 2:56 of MP3. It’s dreamy, the raps are satisfying, and the ending is charming. I will say that although the second half of the song adds the stunning “spaceship” post-choruses and a floaty bridge with an incredible drumbeat-drop transition to the final chorus, the raps of the song make it feel a bit front-loaded. And in an album stacked with incredible finishers, it feels more apparent.
With that said, it’s an 8/10 bop for me. This song is so radio-friendly and easy to put on and it feels exactly what Chaeyoung would make if given the reins to produce a pop song all on her own. The lyrics are nonchalant but full of conviction, the wordplay is intricate, the production is playful, and it’s not too bombastic — the song's just a nice vibe. Songs like Basics are the standard for good, simple, repeatable pop music and I’m happy that Chaeyoung got to test her pen in this genre.

BABY WE’RE IN
TROUBLE TROUBLE

Trouble 💃

Sole lyricist credit: Jihyo
Background vocals: Jihyo
Lead composer credit: Jihyo
Vocal director credit: Jihyo (an assumption given her contributions in First Time)

One of the most enjoyable songs I’ve heard in a while.
There is an underlying tension within the first 4 bars of the song, Jihyo and Nayeon confidently open it to a nondescript array of synths and then the stanza ends, Momo announces “Let’s go”, the beat drops and it hits you: this is a club song.
Dahyun's relaxed delivery contrasted with Jeongyeon's staccato flow, the wobbly synth beat with the sprinkle of that house piano, Sana dramatically slowing the song down only for Tzuyu to build it back up until the chorus drops,

This chorus is perfect. Toronto’s residential market needs this song injected into its veins because god damn this song has SO much house in it.
And then. AND THEN. ANOTHER KILLING PART. This rap fucking slaps.

gamchweo bwatja geugeon Fake
ppajin hamjeongeun Sweet cake

During the first 2 bars, Chaeyoung is keeping it calm because that trip of a chorus just ended and the song needs a breather, but I don't think anyone expected her to SNAP this hard afterwards:

You cannot resist this
I - I - I I - I - I
Cannot miss this, such a bliss
I - I - I - I I - I - I
Ima put it down down
I - I - I - I I - I
Oh yeah, better kiss kiss
I - I I - I - I - I

The lines below the lyrics are the notes/syllables of her rap. I’m not that well versed in this technical aspect of music theory but I digress, this is all in the span of around 5 seconds where it’s:

Triplet-triplet
Quadruplet-triplet
Quadruplet-doublet
Doublet-quadruplet

Now, 25/5 = 5 syllables per second isn’t groundbreaking, but goddamn it these 2 bars sound so nice — if there is one part in this album that I always repeat, it’s these bars. The addition of that first quadruplet for “cannot miss this” in the midst of all the triplets sticks out and accelerates the flow of the rap while the following doublets and quadruplets help to destabilize and slow the rap down as the verse closes. And can I just point out:
THE MAIN VOCALIST WROTE, DIRECTED, AND COMPOSED THIS SONG ‼
Chaeyoung of course delivered the fuck out of her verse but THIS is what you get when you have a member not only write the words they’re saying but also the melody and flow with which they sing it. This is what you get when one member knows the other members so well that when they write a song, they know how to make the group as a whole exceed. This is what you get when the artists you stan love doing artist shit.
And. AND. That's not all — for all the ranting I wrote on how much I love a damn good outro to close a song, this outro slaps as well:

Woo wee woo wee woo
I like this trouble be-be [Momo]
Woo wee woo wee woo
I like this trouble bay-be [Sana]
Woo wee woo wee woo
I like this trouble bay-beh [Chaeyoung]
Woo wee woo wee woo
I like this trou-ble [Jihyo]

What an outro.
Like, come on, Nayeon’s imitating a police siren for crying out loud. And this is all after her ad-libs in the final post-chorus; after the pianist going full tilt and playing that piano as if it was their last chance to ever play; after that final T.W.I.C.E chant by all the members come these blissful 20 seconds at the very end.
What a song.

THE GOOD
Needs Work
Core Memory

Need I say more, easy 9/10. The only reason I place Talk that Talk above Trouble is because of what that song represents but besides that, this song is one of the best “international” sounds they’ve put out. Actually, I haven’t listened to Eyes wide open in a while but this song is up there with one of the most sonically pleasing pieces of work they’ve done.
Clubbing TWICE music has always been a thing since TT was birthed in 2016, and has been a staple of their discography since 2019’s Fancy You and Feel Special mini albums, but Trouble unapologetically dives into and fits the house genre so well you’d think that this is TWICE’s bread and butter sound.
Trouble is Jihyo’s magnum opus. What a song.

BRAVE BRAVE BRAVE
FOR YOU

Brave 💖

Main producer: Slow Rabbit of HYBE

I first thought this was just a good song, then I read the lyrics.
Gentle guitar plucks, shimmering synths, a distant keyboard in the right ear, in the left an occasional glockenspiel, the melodic oohs from the members — this song is PRETTY.
Once the chorus hits, the melodies pick up, more guitars get added, and there’s even an electric guitar hidden in the mix somewhere, and the song evolves from a song with good vibes to a song to dance to while crying in the club. And that’s without even delving into the lyrics.
The song describes a situation where the singer is in a darker place in life:

The night that was unusually dark
Above this terrifying world, felt so lonely
The world has grown in the time of wandering
So hard to breathe

It isn’t until another person gives them hope by calling them brave that they find the drive to keep on going, to keep on reaching higher highs, and to try to be their truest self. Where has this theme been done before? Uhm…
THIS SONG IS FEEL SPECIAL AS A B-SIDE ‼️
Notable lyrics include:

A voice was heard makes me alive again
I was an endless maze, you became my sign
I’m never alone, so I’m never alone
My only believer
A dreamer that made me run further

This is such an emo song, oh my god. What makes it hurt even more is that apparently, like how Feel Special can be interpreted, this song is centred around ONCE, which, again, is the TWICEiest shit ever. This group is so sappy and full of love, they deserve the whole world.

THE GOOD
Needs Work
Core Memory

I’m actually spoiled with the TWICE members’ easy-to-understand songwriting that when a song like this pops up where it isn’t written by a member and the thematic bits are mostly in Korean I just tend to forget about it in favour of the other songs on the album. And, especially for a song focusing on a theme like this where the English phrases don’t do the Korean lyrics enough justice, it does place a barrier on the listening experience a bit, dropping it down to a 7/10.
With that anecdote out of the way, this song is just such a vibe, man. I know that sounds incredibly hippy to say but Brave is so mellow and smooth that I can’t help but sway a little when that chorus hits. And then I remember what the lyrics say and I stop and cry a bit on the inside. This song is so pure, raw, and full of heart — we need more songs like these where they just reminisce about life while putting up an upbeat front. Don't mind me just crying while dancing the night away.
Also now feels like a good time to get into my rating system:

I SEE THE LIES
ON THE TIP OF YOUR TONGUE

Gone 💨

Sole lyricist credit: Dahyun

Who the fuck pissed off Dubu this time??
It’s getting quite rare to see TWICE pull off brand new sounds because, with 218 songs under their belt, they’ve done so many genres and sub-genres varying from hyper pop, to bossa nova, to whatever 2020’s Go Hard is. So it’s surprising to know they’ve still got tricks up their sleeves and Gone is one of them.
The song starts with strings swinging back and forth and vocal chops dancing from ear to ear, teasing what’s yet to come. Jihyo enters the song with a whisper and the song sets its pace. A stagnant drum pad moves the song along and typical song convention would have Mina continuing the build but — it doesn’t. The song continues to simmer, adding a hint of high hat to the pot. And then, Sana and Tzuyu come on and surely the buildup has to bear fruit right?
Silence, until…

I see the lies on the top of your tongue

The strings emerge again on full blast, the simmer turns into a rolling boil, and the anger of the song is revealed.

All the fate I had towards you
Fades like a fog, gone, gone
Your flipping mind of doing this and that
I’m tired of it, it’s meaningless
In the beginning, it was hard to believe
With that, hatred increases

The singer is so scorned and burned from this relationship that they reminisce about all the effort they’ve put in since the beginning, but their “partner” is so unconcerned and unfaithful that they’ve just about had enough of the relationship altogether.
This has been Dahyun’s thing coming from 2020’s Bring It Back, 2021’s Cruel, and 2022’s That’s all I’m saying — emotionally charged breakup songs that make you feel as if she’s gone through a dozen bad relationships. Dispatch, do your job better, or don’t, I don’t really know.
Another highlight of the song is the post-chorus going into the bridge. This segment reiterates the structure from the first post-chorus — a barrage of drums supported by the rhythmic strumming of a bass guitar in the back along with a consistent synth filling out the soundscape. But this time, it’s Dahyun and Chaeyoung on the rap:

My limit, can’t stand it anymore
My patience, invisible
It’s lost, can’t find it, oh, it’s all gone
Even if I try to turn back, it’s too late
There’s no use for you anymore
All free, no tears, none left, it’s long Gone
Followed by Momo and Dahyun holding down the bridge
With your flipping mind, you’re on the way out
I know that you know what I’m talking ‘bout
Nothing you could say
That could turn this ‘round
I’m Gone
English translation adjusted to fit the cadence of the Korean syllables.

Continuing the disrespected theme of the song, Dahyun notes that she’s finally had enough; instead of reasoning and pondering to herself the mistake that this relationship was, she concludes that it’s time to pack her bags and go. Chaeyoung adding on that there’s no point salvaging what was once there for all of it is long gone.
Momo and Dahyun round it off by telling the listener that there’s no point trying to reason with them or playing naive, they fucked up and there’s no coming back.
Can I just say, it is a bit of a shame that Chaeyoung’s rapping popped off in this album whilst Dahyun only has this one verse that she shares with Chaeyoung, but it just sounds so good how Dahyun eases in after the chorus with her light rapping tone and transitioning into her singing. She even holds the “gone” in a little crescendo for some added pizzazz.
And, there’s no way I’m not going to talk about Momo’s vocals in this bridge. Damned if she only got 1 line to use it in, her lower register is incredible. She sounds so smooth singing in this tone. All of TWICE do in particular but there is nary a weak vocal performance in this album.
To close the song off, a wash of synths get to have their shine in the spotlight, showered with Nayeon’s belting, signifying the dramatic and drawn out conclusion of this partnership. As an aside, I think this outro sounds like a GOT7 song.

THE GOOD
- They’ve still got a few surprises left
- Thundering chorus
- 2nd rap and bridge combo
- Bitter, crumbling relationship theme
Needs Work
- The post-chorus in general, specifically the first one, can be a bit tiring on repeat listens
Life Highlight
- Actually, I think this song sounds like a mix between a GOT7 song, BLACKPINK’s Love To Hate Me, and Dahyun’s Bring It Back. I don’t know where I got this thought synthesized from, but it stuck

Going back to that point about the first rap, or, more accurately, that first post-chorus as a whole; songs that have the production continue unchanged into the post-chorus/2nd verse are very hit or miss for me. And with a chorus as powerful as this, I’m expecting what follows to either contrast or “snap” into place right after the chorus. The post-chorus going into the bridge contrasts Dahyun’s light tone with the hard-hitting production, continuing the energy until it slowly fades into silence at the end of the bridge.
I guess how I view the first post-chorus is that it’s somewhere in the middle. Momo’s rap is trying to match the intensity of the production while Chaeyoung slows it down to lead into verse 2, but Momo’s delivery isn’t as clean as Dahyun’s. That could be attributed in part to the amount of lyrics, the vocal director, the melody constructed for that specific part, or just how loud the production is compared to the vocal mix — it could be any one of those factors because Momo, as proven by Hello, is capable of an insane flow.
Either or, as much as TWICE have been experimenting with their sound for the past 4 years now, I’m happy they’re still finding new ways to explore what they’re capable of. And for that alone, even though I’m not a big fan of songs like these where they rely on sounding “big”, Dahyun’s lyricism and the thrill I receive every time I indulge myself in this song when I listen to it in the first time in a while elevates it to a 8/10. Keep on breaking hearts, Dubu.

INVINCIBLE
SUPERHEROES

When We Were Kids 🧸

Sole lyricist credit: Dahyun

Press play to reminisce, pull up lyrics to cry.
This song is so beautiful. I’m totally not writing this song review, crying on the bus, reminiscing about my childhood, while just having turned 21. I don’t know if these are happy or sad tears but this song is so beautiful either way.
Warm synths, muted piano, a gentle high hat, the younger members starting off the song — this has to be up there for one of the softest TWICE songs ever. And as it should, it’s one of the TWICEiest songs ever. And then Nayeon comes in,

Invincible superheroes, we wanted to be adults
To the higher, clearer world

The chords start swelling, the high hat keeps pace, and then the harmonies come in,

Remember when we were kids
When we were kids, we didn’t know
If we could go back
I will love it even more
Remember when we were kids

Jihyo takes up the second half of the chorus as it drops, trading the strings for an almost R&B synth production — if choir R&B takes off, this song started it. The song relishes in this cacophony of warm sounds until going back into its sparse and peaceful verses.
This time, the hints of piano are louder, little twinkling synths begin to shimmer, the drum buildup comes and Jeongyeon drives the song straight into the chorus. No time for the strings to build like in Nayeon’s — this song loves its chorus so much.
And can I just take this time to appreciate the amount of Jeongyeon vocals in this album. Her voice is so clean, stable, and projected — but also more tender and soft compared to the more pronounced tones of Nayeon and Jihyo.
The bridge comes in, repeating the phrase

I wish that I could meet
Could meet the younger me

Giving the song time to rest, before building back up to the last chorus — this time lead by Jihyo, transitioning from the bridge with her own unique lead-in, completing the 3MIX trifecta. And interestingly enough, Chaeyoung follows up in the second half of the chorus, rather than another member of the vocal line. She really did pop off in this album.
As the last chorus begins to close, the percussion at its strongest, the harmonies as prolific as they can get, the background choir vocals cranked up to their Sunday best, is the song going to end? Of course not! This is an album full of banger endings as if the songs don’t want to actually end, and When We Were Kids being the album closer very much indulges in that feeling.
After a brief refrain, supported by Nayeon’s high note with a touch of vibrato, the song almost dives back into a fourth chorus. Nayeon and Jeongyeon harmonize — an especially rare and heavenly moment. And the song repeats the bridge, reiterating that they want to meet their younger selves, this time with the more lush R&B production before closing with silence, a few piano notes, and Tzuyu singing the last line of the song

Oh, we were kids

Reflection, acceptance, hope. What a song.

THE GOOD
Needs Work
Life Moment
I wrote the first part of this review at the beginning of November 2022. Then university, life, and other things got in the way of my headspace for me to feel confident about wrapping all of this up. In a way, I felt like I just didn’t want this review to end because of the sheer joy that writing gives me. I didn’t want the happiness to end. And then it hit me, after watching a YouTuber rank animated movies and them placing Spirited Away at the top and explaining 'why' reminded me of just how important growing up is, and by extension this song.
This theme is important for both the rookie TWICE members in 2015 and the teenagers who would follow their journey and grow up with them, facing life’s obstacles along the way. Hardships that used to only involve family, crushes, hell, even what my next Instagram post should be, evolve into working and commitments and all the struggles that adult life brings. Being a kid and enjoying the simple things in life is one of the most sought-after moments we want to relive because we took growing up for granted. The only thing we can do now is look back on ourselves with fondness and rose-tinted lenses.
TWICE’s marketing message was originally to resonate with people through their senses and their hearts. That was during their debut, and I think it still holds up today. Touching people through their emotions is what TWICE, in my opinion, does best and is what makes them one of K-pop’s all-time greats. It was never about having the best numbers — it was always about being the best idols. And to think that this journey of maturation and growth would occur from 2015 all the way to this song, being a fitting nod to TWICE’s 7th anniversary, I don’t think anyone at the company nor the group would ever imagine that they could get this far. It’s these nine women or none — 9/10.
This song honestly deserves a 10/10 with how much I noticed other people reminiscing their childhoods after I heard this song, it is such a widely-relatable message, but I am determined to limit myself to one 10/10 song per album and if I were to decide between TTT and WWWK, I'll give it to the one's that's more repeatable — Talk that Talk just has this electric energy about it.

Epilogue

I truly love this album. It got me through some important parts of my life, both the good and the bad, and it is just a pleasant listen throughout. Getting to re-listen and relive this album again this week before finally completing the review has been an exciting journey. Brave hit me harder this time, after being overshadowed by the other gems of this album, and When We Were Kids finally got me to tear up and not just be emotionally satisfied.
I feel like there's something for everyone on this album. From the exhilarating thrills of TTT to the anthemic euphoria of QoH, the clubbing dichotomy of Trouble and Brave to the blissful glee of Basics, and the sweet reminiscence of WWWK to the thundering anger that is Gone. Like Eyes wide open, I like to view Between 1&2 as a tasting platter of pop music — there's such an eclectic mix of pop, house, and dance in this album that there are bound to be songs that someone will love, like, and dislike while listening to it.
That's enough rambling. Ready To Be was also a stunning album and Eyes wide open frankly also deserved the spotlight that Formula of Love: O+T=<3 received so I might tackle those next but no promises; this album took long enough in the oven.
Feel free to comment away any thoughts regarding the album, other TWICE albums, and any suggestions for my writing in general. Congrats again on making it this far!
God, I love this album.

2023.06.02 23:39 Qingque-at-work- I figured out how strong Silver Wolf might be when she ISN'T adding a weakness. A look into defense shred's exponential scaling, and teambuilding options.

I figured out how strong Silver Wolf might be when she ISN'T adding a weakness. A look into defense shred's exponential scaling, and teambuilding options.
So with the silver wolf (SW) banner coming up, I wanted to see how worthwhile she is for actually boosting damage, as she is likely taking the spot of a harmony buffer. Obviously silver wolf is invaluable in difficult fights if it means the difference between being able to break enemies or not being able to break them, as high MoC relies heavily on breaking to stop enemy super attacks. But the elephant in the room is: you could just bring a team that is the right element to break. If so, is SW worthless? Is SW still on par with or better than another buffer or debuffer support that you could bring instead, if we ignore her adding a weakness and 20% elemental resist shred? I decided to find out through the power of math! Damage is only a small piece of the picture (speed, defense, breaking, etc), but I wanted a look at that piece of the picture.

TL;DR: If you build your SW and hypercarry properly (spoilers, stacking defense shred), SW (without weakness break considered) is roughly as damage boosting as our harmony units. However, running SW (or pela for that matter) alongside a harmony is looking way stronger than running 2 harmony or 2 nihility units only as your 2 hypercarry supports. (Yes, GrimroGacha beat me to the punch on this by 4 days! That’s what I get for waiting until the weekends before SW releases to post this!).

*Defense Shred, the one stat with exponential scaling* {see image #1}

As I'm sure you have heard, stats have diminishing returns. Actually that is complicated enough it will get a whole dedicated post about it, but needless to say, the TL;DR is that you want to spread your stats around, and not go too far into one stat bucket. Since everyone gets attack, damage, and crit from light cones, traces, skills, relics, and harmony units, defense shred is a nice all around multiplier to the usual att*DMG*critDMG. But on top of that huge upside, it turns out that the closer you get to 100% defense shred, the better each point of defense shred gets!

If you look at the Defense Shred Calculations image, you can see that in a normal endgame scenario, we are level 80 vs a level 90 enemy, and all of our damage is reduced by ~53%. All your hard work, half of it just disappears, as it is multiplied by 0.47. And all enemies, from bosses to weaklings, have this at level 90 (except warp trotters which are even tankier!).

The first 10% defense shred you get increases your overall damage by 5.3%, but each 10% after that gives more and more, until the final 10% of defense shred (going to a full 100% defense shred), gives a 21% overall damage boost. This means a little defense shred isn't great, you need to stack it! Interestingly, if we are allowed to blow past 100% defense shred, things get a little crazy. So crazy that I have to assume that defense shred will be capped at 100%. Still, a full 100% defense shred gives a whopping 110% overall damage boost! Thats over doubling your damage even after attack, DMG, and critDMG are pumped and suffering from diminishing returns. And this DOES work on DOT damage, unlike crit stats. So, you ask, how do I get that juicy 100%?

*Our Sources of Defense shred*
Pela ultimate: ~40% (42% at trace 12)Pela technique: 20% (For 2 turns only, but works on each MOC mob)Resolution Shines Like Pearls of Sweat (the Light Novel Title of light cones): 12-16%Silver Wolf: ???% (Based on CBT info I’ll pick a number that rounds well, 54%, STC)Quantum relic 4 piece set: 10/20% (only 20% if the enemy is weak to quantum)

All of the above except relics will require effect hit rate to succeed. This, along with speed, will undoubtedly be key stats for Pela and SW to succeed in their roles. As for Pela’s technique, it will shine more the better equipped we are to tackle MoC 10. It will be up a higher % of the fight the shorter the fight is. As for Resolution Shines Like Pearls of Sweat (RSLPOS), it is a starnard 4 star light cone, so in a few months to a year, it will be very common for day 1 players to have multiple superimpositions. As for the Quantum relic set, it is worth a close read. The damage type done for both the 10% and 20% defense ignore does NOT need to be quantum. The only rider is for the 20%, the enemy needs to be weak to quantum. This is important. Also keep in mind that because the quantum relic set is defense ignore, it only works on the wearer. It still stacks additively with defense shred, but it won’t boost the damage of your other 3 characters like the defense shred stat will. Some quick numbers to add up, with your hypercarry using the 4 piece set, they can get 90% defense shred. With Pela, they can get 98%/78% for 2 turns/other turns, respectively.

*Silver Wolf’s Best Lightcone and Set*

I’m going to cut straight to the point. RSLPOS is her best by a mile. Bumping your hypercarries defense shred from 74% to 90% means that your hypercarry does about 24% more damage, overall. Not just added into the DMG% bucket. That is insane. For reference, that’s twice as strong as, say, adding 12% damage vulnerability to an enemy. Yes, her free 4star cone gives effect hit rate, but your relics can have effect hit rate main stat and substat. There are no defense shred substats. You should have no trouble getting the effect hit rate you need, and a tiny bit more from a light cone is not worth gimping your teams entire damage output by 24%.

As for SW’s sets, none seem like gamechangers. A bit more speed from musketeer is nice, a bit more damage from quantum might add up a bit, maybe break effect if SW is breaking for a mono quantum team. Maybe even defense to die less! In the end I feel like getting tons of speed and effect hit rate will be more important than a particular 4 piece set. Same with planar sets, a little effect hit rate is nice, so is a teamwide attack buff, and who knows the 5% ER might be critical for a rotation.

*Your Hypercarry’s Best Set*

For dealing the most damage, if you are running SW or Pela with RSLPOS, the most damaging set for your hypercarry will be the quantum set: Genius of brilliant stars (GOBS). Going from 70% defense shred to 90% defense shred is a 30% overall damage increase. Gaining 10/20 DMG%/att%, 10/25 DMG%/att%, 34% DMG%, or 10/25% DMG%/critDMG% from lightning/physical/fire/ice aren’t even close. The imaginary set might compete if you have great crit stats already…if you could always have the enemy imprisoned, which is doubly resisted by lategame enemies. The only real competition is utility sets giving speed or break effect if that matters more than raw damage for your hypercarry. Now, the enemy won’t always have a quantum weakness, but they will for mono quantum, for mono teams they might naturally have quantum weakness, and if not theres a 25/50% chance they get it from SW anyway (and you can intentionally SW skill a second time to grant it). In the end, you could say that the set bonuses are close enough that you should focus on the best substat relics you have. But this shows that if you have a great GOBS set, you don’t need to burn stamina farming for a different elemental set.

*Comparing SW to her competition* {see img #2}

First, a disclaimer. Honkai Star Rail is an incredibly complex system, which is great. But this means that damage isn’t the end all, be all. When comparing different support units, a single damage excel spreadsheet can’t account for: speed boosts of harmony units, higher uptime of debuffs vs buffs (bronya ally turns go brrrr), better break of nihility units (or asta), harmony and nihility damage increases to the non-hypercarry units, different break effect between unit types, skill point generation between harmony and nihility units, Tingyuns energy boost, etc, etc, etc. I say this because if I don’t, the first comment will be “But you didn’t account for dance, dance, dance!”. You are right, I didn’t, or the huge above list of factors either. We need massive comprehensive sims for all of that, but I don’t have access to that and I haven’t seen any sims yet trying to use max defense shred, so I’m going off of the raw damage numbers. And you should mentally track: “well but I really value bronyas extra turns, or that pela can never use her skill and thus maximize skill point generation” when you look at these damage numbers. Also, I just did a few sample units and builds, but there are infinite possibilities, so I hope this gets you excited to test some on your own. I know I am now…not that I have the resources to build any more.

In my image "damage increase of buffers and debuffers", I have to make quite a few assumptions. For damage, I use the formula of attack*dmg*critdmg*def*resist*vuln*toughness. I looked at what different e0 5 star hypercarries can look like with all their traces, solid (not perfect) gear, buffed states activated, and good light cones (multiple superimposition 4 stars, or FTP 5 stars). Obviously every character has slightly different stats, and will have different gear. But I averaged things out to having a 200% increase in attack (slightly less than 200% att%, plus the flat attack), 200% in all DMG bonuses, 100% net crit damage [you won't crit every time but you can average out what the damage will be when accounting for crit %, and this is a somewhat balanced and reasonable value, obviouly yanqing will be higher]. Then I assumed no defense or resist shred (seele is an outlier there), and no vulnerability (welt trace), and no toughness bar modifies (you lost 10% damage if they aren't broken). But stats like vulnerability and toughness modifier are irrelevant to this math since their values will be the same regardless of which units are picked, I only put them in to show I wasn't forgetting about them. Keep in mind that this is assuming that enemies are vulnerable to your damage type already (because SW is obviously better if they aren’t, but the whole point of this is to look at a worst case SW where her skill doesn’t help). My one small number fudge was I didn’t subtract out the flat damage value before adding the attack mulitpliers of the harmony units (since I don't have an exact number, I'm using a 200% green number compared to your base attack), so when I added the harmony attack% to the full number (and not something like 80-90%), it actually makes the harmony units look a tiny bit stronger than they actually should. For supports, all 5 stars are level 10 traces, and all 4 stars are level 12 traces. When looking at supports, keep in mind their speed or ER buffs. I gave them all the 5 superimposition DMG% buff lightcone to show the most damage they could add (in reality they will NOT be granting that damage everty turn).

If you took a look, you will see that, unsurprisingly, in a lightly geared situation, bronya sits supreme without even accounting for her turn acceleration! But when you really start to stack up the best light cones and situations, Pela and SW really start to pull their own weight. The difference between a plain pela ultimate and a defense shred stacking pela team is HUGE, and something I wish was more widely explained (rather than the usual "I think pela is underrated but I'm not sure how" I hear almost daily). The extra defense shred Pela has for 2 turns over SW even beats out the 13% resist shred boost that SW can bring. And I didn’t account for pela adding 12% ice resist shred!

The last 2 lines are really the big news that blew me away. I figured that most lategame teams will have 2 support slots, and only 1 dedicated tank/healer. I feel like this is reasonable since we won't be 20 levels under enemies and rocking 4 star relics in a few short months. Of course there are other team comps out there like DoT that this isn’t relevant for. Thought looking at the damage multiplier values, a single hypercarry getting a huge boost will be better than 2 carries getting a small boost (and fighting for skill points). So we see that stacking harmony units like Bronta and Tingyun really has diminishing returns, since they keep adding to the same damage buckets, mostly attack and damage (and for my example I let P&F and bronyas signature DMG boost LC’s stack, which I believe is impossible currently. In reality dance dance dance would be run on one of them). So combining 2 harmony units isn't a huge force multiplier, especially if they both also focus on speed (which also has diminishing returns, though not calculated here). Also, I didn't even consider stacking debuffers together, since each alone could almost get 100% defense shred, running both would be a complete waste. But mixing SW and bronya, we see HUGE results. Pela and tingyun together also show a similar increase. Since the harmony and nihility hit different buckets, they really multiply off of each other, way more than 2 harmony units do.

*My Personal Musings*

This helps cement my decision to pull for SW, personally. I plan to run 2 hypercarry teams, so I can run pela on one side and SW on the other side. Also, SW does enable your team to take on an otherwise unwinnable fight, as everything above is multiplied by another 25% damage plus break damage plus not dying to boss supermoves. So I won’t need to build quite as many elements. Though now I want 10 Resolution Shines light cones, lol.
A big thing I wanted to show was HOW defense shred stacking works. I’m blown away that nowhere on reddit, youtube, or twitch have I seen the exact value of how defense shred stacking works. This really shows that if you do run a defense shred nihility, you want to use defense shred light cones and gear. And keep in mind that carrys who boost their own personal att%, DMG%, and crit% will especially get boosted by shredding defense instead of more attack and DMG% (Seele, and even moreso Yanqing, and even moreso…the queen of selfbuffs…Qingque).
I’m also glad that I can get good value out of both harmony and nihility units. I feel like there will be a team where every unit can shine now.
Thanks for reading, and let me know your thoughts! Good luck to you trailblazers who choose to pull!

2023.06.02 22:46 john_oldcastle My Favorite Dead (vol 1): Avalon Ballroom 10/12/68 (long post)

10/12/68 Avalon Ballroom “it’s a foxtrot, and also a ladies choice”
In a way, this is my Deadhead origin story. It's 1989. I was 14 and had just discovered “classic rock." My native musical tendencies at the time, trended around 80s hip-hop (Run-DMC, Beastie Boys), thrash metal (the big 3) and various NWOBHM—particularly Iron Maiden. The weird, disturbing/cartoonish/horror iconography and imagery were important to 14 year old me ( I guess in a way, I was primed for the Dead.)
Anyway, around this time I had an older cousin who hipped me to Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, and The Doors. Also, that summer was the 20th anniversary of Woodstock, and MTV aired the Wadleigh film I think several times. I was absolutely spellbound. I taped most of the film to a VCR cassette and probably watched Alvin Lee and Ten Years After’s blissed out performance of I’m Going Home everyday for like 3 months. I wanted Alvin Lee’s whole Woodstock vibe injected directly into my veins. I had become a wannabe hippie.
This neo-hippie vibe seemed to infect my whole friend group. We all read the Beats and Huxley’s The Doors of Perception and traded 60s/70s tapes—Floyd, The Who, The Doors, Cream. We of course started smoking pot and spending hours spacing out to psychedelic music or re-watching Fantasia, Heavy Metal, or 2001 for the umpteenth time. It was all way more interesting than Motley Crue or Winger or Bon Jovi or whatever the fuck MTV was doing.
And of course, I had heard of Grateful Dead by then—I was like 12 when “Touch of Grey” was a hit. And they were a big mainstream rock band in 1989. The news ran segments on them when they came to the area.
But initially, I thought they were kinda lame and corny--like the Beach Boys and Kokomo. Sure, the imagery was dope—like one would expect from a metal or hard rock band. But the Dead were definitely and (for me at the time) disappointingly not hard rock. And those Dead guys for sure did not look like the bad ass dudes from Slayer. From what little I heard, I was not impressed. But how to access the good stuff I knew must be there?
In a way I am a little envious of young people discovering music today. It’s all out there. Want to get into Bob Dylan? You can spend a long weekend online listening to his discography and reading countless essays about his art and emerge as a fairly knowledgeable Dylan fan 3 or 4 days later. The Dead may take a bit longer to fully grok, but all the shows are online and there is no shortage of info about where to start. These days, an intrepid neophyte could get a broad understanding of the Dead in a week or two.
In 1989, I was flying blind. It’s weird to think about how differently we used to conceptualize and listen to rock music back then. At the time rock music was rooted in mystery and scarcity. I was limited to the maybe twenty or so cassettes I had, which I listened to over and over and over again. All I knew about rock music was what I saw on MTV, read in Spin or Rolling Stone, or heard about from friends, older cousins, and siblings.
So when I looked to get into the Dead, I had little bearing for which to set my course. I picked up Aoxomoxoa at the mall because the cover looked cool. And…it was okay. Look, compared to some of the other classic rock era albums I had been exposed to by that time it just didn't really rock or roll very much. At the time, I much preferred Blue Cheer’s Vincebus Eruptum to Aoxomoxoa (and I kinda still do).
Anyway, fall of 1989 was the beginning of high school. New people and new cliques. This kid who became part of our group had a Deadhead older brother in college. And he had the goods. For the price of one or two Maxells, we could get a bootleg. Since I knew next to nothing, I asked for a show he liked. He gave me an aud from a 78 show (a show I actually like now!). At the time however, this seemingly failed even more than the Aoxomoxoa album. The sound was muddy and murky, and some of the songs reminded me of Jimmy Buffett on quaaludes.
But side 2 of tape 3 was called “Filler: Set 2 Avalon 1968.” It listed four songs like this: “Dark Star>St. Stephen>Eleven>Death What the fuck is this? Filler? I wanted killer, and now I was getting filler? Hmm. I’d heard of Dark Star. I knew St. Steven from Aoxomoxoa. “Death” was certainly intriguing. Alright, let’s give it a go…

(cut to scenes of dude’s face melting in Raiders of the Lost Ark, the guy’s head exploding in Scanners, the scientists learning to talk to the UFO in the last act of Close Encounters, the Sasquatch/mushroom scene in Tenacious D’s Pick of Destiny, Andy Dufrane standing in the rain after escaping Shawshank)

THE SHOW
This is it. This is where I GOT IT. 10/12/68 is what turned the worm for me. Actually, it was just the first set at first, though I was able to get the second set a few weeks later—ah, yes, thank you, this is the bus I was waiting for…
This is pure, uncut Primal Dead. For me, this show is exhibit A of Jerry Garcia as a swaggering gun slinging guitar god. His playing is full of snarling psychedelic attitude and creativity (I think he’s playing a Les Paul here?). You know how Phish people used to refer to “Machine Gun Trey?” Yes, well, here we have Flame Thrower Jerry.
Let’s consider Grateful Dead in the fall of 1968. This show occurs at a time when Pigpen and Weir had presumably been kicked out of the Dead. In the days leading up to the Avalon shows on the 12th and 13th Jerry, Phil, Mickey and Bill were kinda sorta rethinking the Dead line-up w/the “Mickey and the Heartbeats” shows played at the crosstown Matrix on the 8th, 9th and 10th.
Indeed, Pig did not play on the 10/12 Avalon show. For his part Weir does what he can rhythmically as Jerry, Phil, Mickey, and Billy lay waste to all before them. I mean, you’ve got to love a band that fires a dude and then just lets them stick around and earn the job back. Knowing the back story now, this show almost seems like some kind of trial by fire for ol’ Bob. I mean, imagine trying to keep up with this music? In short, this is elemental, fire-breathing psychedelic acid rock played by young men with something to prove.
The Dark Star is early—not as open ended as 72-74 Dark Stars. The Live/Dead version, recorded about six months later, is perhaps more mature and developed, but this one has off-the charts energy and inventiveness. This is my favorite of the early Primal Dead, pre-72 Dark Stars.
I think The Eleven here is an all-timer. Jerry and Phil conjuring viscous curlicues of dark light while Bill and Mickey lock into some kind of inter-galactical syncopation. And the Death Don’t Have No Mercy is just phenomenal. My personal favorite. Jerry really goes for it—he never apes the blues, but he makes it his own. Really passionate guitar playing and even more passionate vocals.
Like the Dark Star here, The Other One would range farther (furthur? lol) out in the future, but this version is just a snarling beast, dripping with liquid magma and unrelenting energy. Likewise, the jam on New Potato Caboose scales the holy psychedelic summit of bliss.
For personal reasons, of course, 10/12/68 is one of my favs. This is a great show to check out if you are looking for raw, primal 60s Dead—an interesting companion to Live/Dead.
It’s also a good gateway show, especially for rockers. I got a few hard rockers turned on to the Dead through this show. The balls-out energy and talent is palpable. Years ago, I played The Other One from this show to an Army buddy who likes metal like Mastadon and Opeth. About halfway through he low whistled and said, “Goddamn, that hippie motherfucker is playing the shit out of that guitar. Gotta respect that.”
