This is not a comprehensive list, but it's as close as I could get to one from research and memory, and it includes quite a bit of Bay Area shenanigans. The Superdome appears fairly often as well:
1941 - The St. Louis Browns attempt to move to Los Angeles, but the winter meetings where the move's approval is set for a vote are scrapped by the attack on Pearl Harbor two days prior
1947 - NL President Ford Frick suggests to good friend and St. Louis Cardinals owner Sam Breadon that the team, currently renting Sportsmans Park from the Browns, should move to Chicago so it can finally have a successful NL franchise, but the White Sox and another area team stridently object so the team is instead sold to Fred Saigh
1953 - Facing federal tax evasion charges and bedeviled by Browns owner Bill Veeck loading the payroll with old Cardinals favorites and starting some wild promotions to shove his stadium's NL tenants out of town, Redbirds owner Fred Saigh nearly sells the team to a group in Houston before Gussie Busch floats in on a river of beer to save Stan Musial from a move to Texas
1953 - Saigh also nearly sold the Cardinals to a different beer baron - Fred Miller of Milwaukee - but as mentioned previously, the Budweiser guys saved the day instead
1953 - Unable to compete with the new Anheuser Busch money, the St. Louis Browns nearly move to Milwaukee instead, but Bill Veeck is blocked by the other owners. Milwaukee consoles itself by watching the ex-Boston Braves, who have just relocated there and will stay for a little over a decade. The Browns, who had started out as the original Milwaukee Brewers, move to Maryland and take on the Yankees franchise's original name as the Baltimore Orioles
1956 - The Washington Senators are courted by Los Angeles before the Brooklyn Dodgers enter the fray, then ultimately move to Minnesota five years later instead
1956 - New York Giants consider a move to Minneapolis before settling on San Francisco once the Brooklyn Dodgers' move west is solidified
1956 - The Kansas City Athletics owner, having just moved the team from Philadelphia, immediately regrets his decision and explores Los Angeles before being usurped by the Brooklyn Dodgers. He sells the team to Charles Finley a few years later
1958 - Incensed at having lost the Dodgers and Giants, New York mayor Robert Wagner enlists William Shea to try to poach the Phillies, Reds, or Dodgers, before switching tactics and instead attacking MLB's antitrust status until they agree to allow the Mets as an expansion franchise.
1962 - Charles Finley tries to move the Athletics to Dallas but gets blocked by other owners
1963 - Charles Finley tries to move the Athletics to Louisville but gets blocked by other owners

I'm not even talking about Chevy's website, like a car will be listed there AND on the dealerships website, yet the dealer will tell me it's sold when I contact them.....if it's sold then why don't they remove the car from their available inventory? Surely they must have the ability to remove cars from their inventory once they've been sold. This wastes everyones time. Not a 1 time occurrence either. Every single time I've contacted a dealer regarding a Bolt they have listed in stock I've been told they don't have it in stock. Multiple dealerships. Last one just tried to point me to a listing they have of a pre-owned Bolt that they're selling for the same price as a brand new one/if not more ($27k for a base LT 2021 Bolt)
Just venting, but I've never worked at a car dealership, curious if others have had similar experiences or have any explanation as to why a dealership would list a car for sale in their inventory when the car is not for sale in their inventory.

I've moved to somewhat-rural Brazil and am looking at getting an affordable 4x4. I don't drive daily, it's for weekly/monthly supermarket runs and road trips to unpaved national parks. I also move relatively often, so it's handy if it's big enough to haul a bunch of crap so I don't need to rent a van for every move. I've only ever owned motorcycles (though I've rented a bunch of cars over the years for shorter trips).

Another Madden $70 re-skin is upon us, so let's take a moment to explore the history of all the people who have been featured on the cover of an pro football video game.
While the selection of the Madden cover athlete is now an event, there was a wild wild west period of football games from the 80s to the mid-2000s where anybody with a computer could and would build football games, with the selection of the cover being all over the place. Roger Craig was the first cover athlete in 1985 on NFL Challenge for MS-DOS. Madden's first game was in 1988, then by the mid-90s getting a cover athlete or spokesman for your football game was pretty standard.
I wanted to compile those games and covers based on this Wiki article (and a few that it was missing from that list) and see who was on the main cover of all of those games (some games were almost completely irrelevant, so I left them off this list). Some of these may have more alternates with other people, but I'll stick with the main cover.

Obviously QBs dominate here, but I didn't realize how little defensive players have been on football game covers (9%), with none being on a cover since Richard Sherman in 2014. I'd love to see more defensive players on the Madden cover. Who would be the most likely defensive guy in the near future? Aaron Donald, TJ Watt, Nick Bosa, Myles Garrett, or Sauce Gardner?

The Re-skins/Commanders?, Jags, Panthers, and Bills have appeared on a cover but never with an athlete as the lead or with a real person. Only the Texans have never appeared at all on the cover of any football video game. I'd say the Bills are most likely to get one next (Josh Allen), then the Jags (Trevor Lawrence), then the Panthers/Texans if either hits a home run with Young or Stroud. The Commanders have a long road ahead to getting a feature cover athlete, unless you ask Sam Howell who thinks he should be this year's Madden cover athlete.
Kordell Stewart, Daunte Culpepper, and Donovan McNabb (and possibly Lamar Jackson, still too early for him) are the only players with multiple appearances that are either not or are unlikely to make the Hall of Fame. McNabb is the only guy to appear in multiple covers in the same year. Also of note, 7 athletes were on a cover without ever making a pro bowl in their careers: Brad Muster, Pat Terrell, Gordon Laro, Chris Zorich, Albert Fontenot, William Floyd, and Peyton Hillis (Hillis was the only one to be the primary cover athlete).

The dip in the last 2 decades is because there's just less games, so any generic football games will have a large effect.
1988: John Madden Football released on the Apple II, MS-DOS, and Commodore 64/128 (partly being developed by Bethesda), which was the beginning of the most dominant franchise in football video games. They featured no NFL teams due to a lack of an NFL license.
1991: Tecmo Super Bowl is probably still my personal favorite football video game. It's totally timeless, and if you pick the Raiders then you're a cheater.
2000: Madden 2001 started the tradition of having their games feature a cover athlete in this format, which consolidated into nearly everyone following this trend.
2001: Backyard Football 2002 was a more kid-friendly version of a football video game, and they also had other games for other professional sports. I definitely played this a lot on my old Windows Me computer, and Pablo Sanchez is a god.
2002: NFL Fever was Microsoft's foray into football video games on the original Xbox. All 3 of their games featured Peyton Manning as the cover athlete.
2002: NFL GameDay 2003 was 989 Sports' exclusive for Sony on the PlayStation platform.
2004: ESPN NFL 2K5 was the last great football game before the NFL exclusively gave their license to the EA. It was this game that definitely led to NFL's decision though, as they slashed their release price to an unheard of $20, which forced Madden 2004 to release at $30 instead of the typical $50. This pissed off the NFL, who decided to have less competition instead.
2006: NFL Head Coach was a new perspective on NFL Games where you play as the coach instead of the players. I enjoyed these although they could get a little boring.
2007: All Pro Football 2K8 was 2K's attempt at keeping the 2K football franchise alive without the coveted NFL license. They got three HoF players on the cover in Elway, Barry, and Rice, but not the actual license to any NFL team. This game received praise for its mechanics, but poor sales showed that a non-NFL licensed game would always struggle to make it.
2011: Madden 12 was maybe the last good Madden game. Also, Peyton Hillis. The only guy on a NFL football game cover to never make a Pro Bowl. This guy is an actual hero though, so good for him.
2019: Doug Flutie's Maximum Football was a mix of american and CFL football as another attempt at making a football game without the NFL license to poor results. They have announced a new game as a free to play title on new platforms, but no games in this franchise have released since 2020.
2020: Retro Bowl is a mobile game more in the style of Tecmo Super Bowl than Madden. It's probably the most successful non-Madden game since ESPN NFL 2K5, and it's pretty fun. People should definitely give this one a try since it's free to play on any mobile platform.
2022: Madden 23 gave the cover back to Madden for the first time since 1999 to honor the passing of the legend John Madden. Unfortunately the game inside the cover was crap, has been the style of Madden games for over a decade.

I’ve been interested in the Bolt EUV since it was announced. Recently my local Chevy dealership got a Used 22 Premier EUV in stock. It has the sun and sound plus super cruise package with 8k miles on it. They have it with a special sale price right now if $32,500. Do you fine folks think it’s worth it to get a used Bolt EUV?
The biggest detractor, to me, to buying a Bolt EUV used is not being eligible for the free* home charging unit. My daily commute is roughly 2 miles so it’s not like I would burn through a full charge and need it back up quick but being stuck with a slow charge unless I wanted to upgrade out of pocket is something I’m not sure if I like.
So that’s why I’m here. Asking your personal and professional advice. :-D

I was ready to pull the trigger on an LS3, but, I was recently offered a LT 6.2 engine/tranny/harness/computer off a 2020 Denali truck at a very low price from an estate sale. ($3k) I am planning on dropping it into a 1966 Chevy C10. I can't really find much information on this type of swap online compared to an LS swap, and I don't even know if it will work. What I did find was that all of the parts on an LT engine are much more expensive than an LS3, but for $3k for a complete LT engine/tranny/harness/computer, it's hard not to try and see if I can use it in my C10 swap. My questions are this:

- Can an LT engine off a 2020 Denali truck work in my situation?
- Will the cost to use this LT engine in my swap cost more than just using an LS3?
- Any reputable shops that you can recommend that can perform this swap in Arizona/Nevada/California area?
- Can a 4 wd transmission from 2020 Denali be converted to 2 wd?
- From my research, it seems like finding the parts will be a challenge, but I don't mind being patient for parts being delivered.
- Even if the LT parts are expensive, it may still be less than buying a complete LS3 engine with low miles.
- I don't know if using an LT engine will increase resale value of my C10. I'm never going to sell, but it's nice to know I have more value in my truck than most others.

Another Madden $70 re-skin is upon us, so let's take a moment to explore the history of all the people who have been featured on the cover of an pro football video game.
While the selection of the Madden cover athlete is now an event, there was a wild wild west period of football games from the 80s to the mid-2000s where anybody with a computer could and would build football games, with the selection of the cover being all over the place. Roger Craig was the first cover athlete in 1985 on NFL Challenge for MS-DOS. Madden's first game was in 1988, then by the mid-90s getting a cover athlete or spokesman for your football game was pretty standard.
I wanted to compile those games and covers based on this Wiki article (and a few that it was missing from that list) and see who was on the main cover of all of those games (some games were almost completely irrelevant, so I left them off this list). Some of these may have more alternates with other people, but I'll stick with the main cover.
*These are heavily boosted by John Madden being on 10 Madden covers
Obviously QBs dominate here, but I didn't realize how little defensive players have been on football game covers (9%), with none being on a cover since Richard Sherman in 2014. I'd love to see more defensive players on the Madden cover. Who would be the most likely defensive guy in the near future? Aaron Donald, TJ Watt, Nick Bosa, Myles Garrett, or Sauce Gardner?

The Re-skins/Commanders?, Jags, Panthers, and Bills have appeared on a cover but never with an athlete as the lead or with a real person. Only the Texans have never appeared at all on the cover of any football video game. I'd say the Bills are most likely to get one next (Josh Allen), then the Jags (Trevor Lawrence), then the Panthers/Texans if either hits a home run with Young or Stroud. The Commanders have a long road ahead to getting a feature cover athlete, unless you ask Sam Howell who thinks he should be this year's Madden cover athlete.
Kordell Stewart, Daunte Culpepper, and Donovan McNabb (and possibly Lamar Jackson, still too early for him) are the only players with multiple appearances that are either not or are unlikely to make the Hall of Fame. McNabb is the only guy to appear in multiple covers in the same year. Also of note, 7 athletes were on a cover without ever making a pro bowl in their careers: Brad Muster, Pat Terrell, Gordon Laro, Chris Zorich, Albert Fontenot, William Floyd, and Peyton Hillis (Hillis was the only one to be the primary cover athlete).

2001: Backyard Football 2002 was a more kid-friendly version of a football video game, and they also had other games for other professional sports. I definitely played this a lot on my old Windows Me computer, and Pablo Sanchez is a god.
2002: NFL Fever was Microsoft's foray into football video games on the original Xbox. All 3 of their games featured Peyton Manning as the cover athlete.
2002: NFL GameDay 2003 was 989 Sports' exclusive for Sony on the PlayStation platform.
2004: ESPN NFL 2K5 was the last great football game before the NFL exclusively gave their license to the EA. It was this game that definitely led to NFL's decision though, as they slashed their release price to an unheard of $20, which forced Madden 2004 to release at $30 instead of the typical $50. This pissed off the NFL, who decided to have less competition instead.
2006: NFL Head Coach was a new perspective on NFL Games where you play as the coach instead of the players. I enjoyed these although they could get a little boring.
2007: All Pro Football 2K8 was 2K's attempt at keeping the 2K football franchise alive without the coveted NFL license. They got three HoF players on the cover in Elway, Barry, and Rice, but not the actual license to any NFL team. This game received praise for its mechanics, but poor sales showed that a non-NFL licensed game would always struggle to make it.
2011: Madden 12 was maybe the last good Madden game. Also, Peyton Hillis. The only guy on a NFL football game cover to never make a Pro Bowl. This guy is an actual hero though, so good for him.
2019: Doug Flutie's Maximum Football was a mix of american and CFL football as another attempt at making a football game without the NFL license to poor results. They have announced a new game as a free to play title on new platforms, but no games in this franchise have released since 2020.
2020: Retro Bowl is a mobile game more in the style of Tecmo Super Bowl than Madden. It's probably the most successful non-Madden game since ESPN NFL 2K5, and it's pretty fun. People should definitely give this one a try since it's free to play on any mobile platform.
2022: Madden 23 gave the cover back to Madden for the first time since 1999 to honor the passing of the legend John Madden. Unfortunately the game inside the cover was crap, has been the style of Madden games for over a decade.

This game received praise for its mechanics, but poor sales showed that a non-NFL licensed game would always struggle to make it.

2020: Retro Bowl is a mobile game more in the style of Tecmo Super Bowl than Madden. It's probably the most successful non-Madden game since ESPN NFL 2K5, and it's pretty fun. People should definitely give this one a try since it's free to play on any mobile platform.
2022: Madden 23 gave the cover back to Madden for the first time since 1999 to honor the passing of the legend John Madden. Unfortunately the game inside the cover was crap, has been the style of Madden games for over a decade.

Another Madden $70 re-skin is upon us, so let's take a moment to explore the history of all the people who have been featured on the cover of an pro football video game.
While the selection of the Madden cover athlete is now an event, there was a wild wild west period of football games from the 80s to the mid-2000s where anybody with a computer could and would build football games, with the selection of the cover being all over the place. Roger Craig was the first cover athlete in 1985 on NFL Challenge for MS-DOS. Madden's first game was in 1988, then by the mid-90s getting a cover athlete or spokesman for your football game was pretty standard.
I wanted to compile those games and covers based on this Wiki article (and a few that it was missing from that list) and see who was on the main cover of all of those games (some games were almost completely irrelevant, so I left them off this list). Some of these may have more alternates with other people, but I'll stick with the main cover.

Obviously QBs dominate here, but I didn't realize how little defensive players have been on football game covers (9%), with none being on a cover since Richard Sherman in 2014. I'd love to see more defensive players on the Madden cover. Who would be the most likely defensive guy in the near future? Aaron Donald, TJ Watt, Nick Bosa, Myles Garrett, or Sauce Gardner?

The Re-skins/Commanders?, Jags, Panthers, and Bills have appeared on a cover but never with an athlete as the lead or with a real person. Only the Texans have never appeared at all on the cover of any football video game. I'd say the Bills are most likely to get one next (Josh Allen), then the Jags (Trevor Lawrence), then the Panthers/Texans if either hits a home run with Young or Stroud. The Commanders have a long road ahead to getting a feature cover athlete, unless you ask Sam Howell who thinks he should be this year's Madden cover athlete.
Kordell Stewart, Daunte Culpepper, and Donovan McNabb (and possibly Lamar Jackson, still too early for him) are the only players with multiple appearances that are either not or are unlikely to make the Hall of Fame. McNabb is the only guy to appear in multiple covers in the same year. Also of note, 7 athletes were on a cover without ever making a pro bowl in their careers: Brad Muster, Pat Terrell, Gordon Laro, Chris Zorich, Albert Fontenot, William Floyd, and Peyton Hillis (Hillis was the only one to be the primary cover athlete).

We didn't see the first cover athlete until 1985 with Roger Craig. They didn't really become standard until the early to mid-90s after Madden became a big selling point for the early Madden games. The dip in the last 2 decades is because there's just less games, so any generic football games will have a large effect.
1988: John Madden Football released on the Apple II, MS-DOS, and Commodore 64/128 (partly being developed by Bethesda), which was the beginning of the most dominant franchise in football video games. They featured no NFL teams due to a lack of an NFL license.
1991: Tecmo Super Bowl is probably still my personal favorite football video game. It's totally timeless, and if you pick the Raiders then you're a cheater.
2000: Madden 2001 started the tradition of having their games feature a cover athlete in this format, which consolidated into nearly everyone following this trend.
2001: Backyard Football 2002 was a more kid-friendly version of a football video game, and they also had other games for other professional sports. I definitely played this a lot on my old Windows Me computer, and Pablo Sanchez is a god.
2002: NFL Fever was Microsoft's foray into football video games on the original Xbox. All 3 of their games featured Peyton Manning as the cover athlete.
2002: NFL GameDay 2003 was 989 Sports' exclusive for Sony on the PlayStation platform.
2004: ESPN NFL 2K5 was the last great football game before the NFL exclusively gave their license to the EA. It was this game that definitely led to NFL's decision though, as they slashed their release price to an unheard of $20, which forced Madden 2004 to release at $30 instead of the typical $50. This pissed off the NFL, who decided to have less competition instead.

I can talk to a customer about a bunch of features these trucks have, but i can’t seem to figure out what they want to hear. my coworker who’s great a truck sales does a much better job selling them the truck than I do. I don’t know what people generally want to know about the truck i’m selling them, and they have such weird questions that car buyers don’t have and it always throws me off, it’s always something new.
I always go for the towing ability, engine and trans specs, wheels, all the cameras, trailer tech features on the screen, trailering/off-roading/sport/normal drive modes, spray in bed liner, tie downs, sockets etc. It’s never as good as my coworkers though, he always mentions stuff i didn’t even think about/know that the truck has that isn’t just stuff you can find on the website.

If anyone is interested in some of my writing process, here’s the first part of a six-part series. It’s meant to be the origin story of Erling, an important character in Raining Strangers.
On May 17, 2023, this was 483 words. The version below, finished on May 25, 2023, is 2,623 words. It’s estimated to take nine and a half minutes to read silently, and 14 and a half minutes to read out loud.
I’ll try to finish all six parts and keep you updated as I go. Comments and questions welcomed!
Feels like this life was forever ago, but it all took place in this century.
After ten long hours on the job, I was putting on my jacket and mentally planning dinner when my phone buzzed. Hoping it would be Tammy asking for a specific meal, I slid the phone from my pocket and found instead an email from my boss, Lawson. The guy quick-stepping past my desk to leave before me. He paused, pointed at my phone and said he needed all “those things” for an 8 o’clock presentation the next morning.
I offered to do half from home and Lawson do the other half.
“Me boss, me sleep. You, worker. You work,” he laughed, jogging down the hall to the building’s back door.
I knew from experience he felt threatened anytime I was able to beat him physically, so I remained a few steps behind as we both headed home. Like a brother harassing a sibling, he closed the outside door behind him.
When he was sure I could see him, he moved a fair-sized artificial boulder to look like he’d blocked the door from opening. Either he’d forgotten or he hoped I’d forgotten the boulder weighed no more than ten pounds. It was one of several custom rocks I’d made before he bought out the patent and process for them.
I leaned against the wall, waiting for Lawson to finish his juvenile “gotcha” of moving the boulder.
He was struggling with the rock when he split into two Lawsons. One kept moving the boulder. The other levitated above the first body as if laying down for sleep. A large bell materialized next to him and rang.
The floor shook like an earthquake hit.
Levitating Lawson’s head exploded.
I ducked and covered my head with my arms as red, pink, brown and gray matter splattered on the door and everything nearby.
When I dared stand again, the glass was clear. Lawson – the one with the boulder – was staring at me. I moved to open the door and he ran to his BMW.
It was obvious the blood and brain matter I’d seen on the door wasn’t real. But the devastating death was real to my brain. I opened the door and threw up into the bushes.
Not sure what frightened me more, the vision (if it was a vision) or that I would feel so intense about it. I was, and still am, a pretty laid-back guy. Tammy described me as “out of touch” with my emotions, for what that’s worth. I focused on that to calm down.
I watched Lawson leave the parking lot before I moved the boulder back where it belonged. Yeah, I was already late leaving, but I double checked that the back door was locked before getting in my old Chevy Tahoe. Lit my first cigarette since 6:30 a.m. and rolled down the window to enjoy some warm afternoon air on the drive home.
By the time I parked at home, I’d decided Lawson would get a few spreadsheets from me and be happy with that, or not. Tammy and I needed to rediscover the love in our relationship. To hell with Lawson.
The rose bushes I’d planted by the front door for Tammy were starting to bloom. I picked three beauties on the way in and put them in the nicest vase we owned.
Tammy hadn’t contacted me, which meant she’d be home for dinner in about an hour. I popped a chocolate cake into the oven. That’s Tammy’s favorite, she says she could eat it every meal and not tire of it. Whipped up some icing for it and fixed up marinara sauce, spaghetti, salad and garlic bread.
Ten minutes past Tammy’s normal arrival time, she hadn’t called, texted or arrived. That concerned me a little, but she’d been somewhat forgetful lately. Figured that was just fatigue, working too many shifts. I moved the meal except the cake and salad to the still-warm oven and got to creating some spreadsheets for the alleged client meeting the next day.
When I heard Tammy’s car parking in the driveway, I put away my phone and set out dinner.
She rushed in and bypassed hugging me in favor of changing out of her work outfit in the bedroom before sitting at the dining table. She immediately started praying over the meal, something I always went along with. After her first bite of garlic bread, she wanted to know if I would get the laundry done before bed. I nodded, she frowned and switched the topic to how her day went. The days of asking how I was doing, how my day went, were long over. She was tired.
When she finished eating, Tammy left the table without removing her plates or offering to wash up. I quickly cleared off the table, put the leftovers away and washed the dishes. Next I started the laundry before drying the dishes and putting them away. At one point I turned on the radio to have the sound of other humans with me, but the only available call-in shows were worse than silence.
By the time I got to the bedroom with the folded clean laundry in my arms, Tammy’s bedside lamp was off and she was snoring softly. I quietly put the laundry away before pulling the top sheet over Tammy’s shoulders.
For whatever reason, I sighed that night before changing into a t-shirt and shorts. I selected a horror book on my Kindle as my pre-sleep read, traditionally ten to twenty minutes those nights.
As I reached to turn off my bedside lamp, something ripped open behind me. Reached back, supporting my right elbow with my left hand, to check for a tear in my t-shirt. Nothing. Switched arms to reach back with his left hand and that’s when I saw my shadow on the wall.
For the first time in years, I gasped.
My shadow was walking away from me, towards the door. It turned its head to face me. Hard to explain that clearly unless you picture the shadow as I saw it, more three dimensional than it had a right to be.
I was certain it was looking at me. I dropped his Kindle and froze.
A loud laugh came from the general area of my shadow.
Tammy woke up.
My shadow continued walking. It looked back at her, lifted its arm and hand from the wall and waved. She grabbed my arm with hands as cold as ice, and I shuddered as the cold shocked me back into regular breathing.
My shadow stopped walking at the door. A smaller, human-shaped shadow walked out of my shadow. It left a small, human-shaped space through which the wall was clearly visible. The smaller shadow said “Back in ten” before it disappeared.
Tammy was holding my arm so tightly, it was going numb. She and I looked at each other. I couldn’t hide the fear in my expression and to this day, I don’t think that was a weakness on my part. She released my arm, picked up her alarm clock and announced, “I’m timing it.”
We sat there in silence, our room illuminated only by my bedside lamp. The smaller shadow came through the door ten minutes later. It waved at us as it had before, said “Back to sleep,” and slid into the space within my shadow. My shadow then flattened itself against the wall and ran back to my side where it matched my body shape.
Tammy laid back down and closed her eyes. I thought she wanted to forget it all and go to sleep. I was shaking and couldn’t think clearly. My body wanted to run. I wanted to write off both what I’d saw and how I felt as fatigue or sleep paralysis.
Not sure what got Tammy going again, but she sat up and repeated everything she’d seen. As much as I didn’t want to hear it, I couldn’t write off anything that happened since she’d seen it all too. The last thing she said was, “This better not happen again, because I can’t handle it.”
I thought about those words for a long time before I put my Kindle on the bedside table and turned off the lamp.
I was still laying there, wide awake, long after Tammy started snoring softly.
The sky light up with dawn’s arrival as Tammy’s alarm clock rang. I pretended to be asleep. She showered and left for work without a word to me, as usual.
Several minutes after her car left our driveway, I made sure my alarm clock was turned off. Not wanting to waste time, I showered and made a half-cup of coffee instead of my usual full cup. I put my clean clothes from last night’s laundry into my travel bag along with my Kindle, recharger, personal hygiene bag and extra shoes. My phone went into my jacket pocket which was hanging on the back of my dining room chair.
After I washed and dried the coffee maker and both cups (Tammy’s and mine), I sat at the dining table. On a clean sheet of paper I wrote the date followed by the longest note he’d ever left for Tammy: “Goodbye, don’t look for me.” I signed it, folded it in half and put it into a slightly damaged, oversized envelope I’d brought home from work several months earlier.
Taking action on my decision led to me adding two items before sealing the envelope. The first was the deed to the house, signed over to Tammy. The second was a stack of cash held together by an elastic. It was all but $500 of the savings I’d kept at home since our first date. It was enough to offset the loss of my income for a few months. Figured that was long enough for her to either sell the house or find a new boyfriend. Maybe she already had one. I couldn’t hold it against her if she did. I hoped she would move on quickly, and didn’t doubt she would.
Once the envelope was sealed, I printed her legal name on it – given name, both middle names and surname – and laid it on her pillow. Took a deep breath after I locked the door one last time. I found myself delaying my exit long enough to take in the scenery that I often ignored while seeking the goal of biggest, baddest, best. Then I stuck the house key under the big rock on the left side of the front door.
I knew I would miss Tammy and I knew that wouldn’t last forever. But the pain was hitting harder and sooner than I’d expected, and it made me sluggish by the time I got to work.
The timer on the office coffee maker hadn’t worked again. Lawson knew it was broken and refused to spend $30 to get the office a new one. But it was ten to eight and I wanted coffee so I set it for a full pot, since Lawson was supposed to have an 8 o’clock meeting with a client.
Speaking of which, Lawson arrived as I was removing a blue mug from the dishwasher.
He was sobbing, his voice was hoarse and he grabbed one of my ankles as he fell over. I tried to back up but he pulled me towards him. The sight of him set my blood cold. I think he was repeating “can’t sleep” and “bells” before I shook my leg hard enough to force him to let go. He responded by covering his head with his hands and pulling his knees to his chin. That’s when I saw blood leaking from his ear and nose.
I wanted to run but what if Lawson died? I would be the number one suspect being both his only employee and the last person to see him.
He didn’t smell of alcohol or other substances, not even his usual after-shave. Figuring his distress was emotional not medical, I shook Lawson by the shoulder until Lawson clearly demanded that I “stop that.”
When I let go of him, Lawson went back to the fetal position and kept repeating “bells”. Foolish, I know, but I kept seeing flashes of the vision from yesterday when levitating Lawson’s head exploded. I asked him, in a voice shakier than I’d ever heard myself speak, if he could stand, if he wanted help to stand, and if he wanted me to get a chair for him. He kept saying “bells”.
I decided to call Emergency Services and used the office landline for the best reception. Police sometimes respond if a 911 call cuts off in a suspicious way and I didn’t want to talk to them. I promised to stay until the medical personnel arrived.
As a result, I was ready to greet EMS personnel when I heard the door slam shut just a few minutes later. Faster response than expected, but good luck for Lawson.
Except it wasn’t EMS, it was Lawson’s wife Dixie, purse in one hand, take-out coffee in the other. She ran in, screaming for Lawson. Don’t ask me how she managed to avoid seeing her husband lying on the floor but damn if she wasn’t a full-blown concern at that point.
“He was screaming about bells,” she said in that breathless kind of half-whisper, half-scream I’ve heard in movies. Didn’t know people talked like that for real. “Said the bells woke him up soon as he fell asleep. Told him I didn’t hear no bells. Woke up to blood all over his pillow.”
I waved at her, pointed to the phone at my head and then to Lawson. She screamed when she saw him. I covered the receiver with his hand and said I was staying on the line until the ambulance arrived.
Dixie grabbed the receiver. “Go, get out,” she whispered, “lemme keep this in the family.”
Didn’t have to tell me twice. I left the key to the building and my business card next to the landline base and left. It took effort but I forced myself to walk, not run, down the hall to the back door. No need to draw attention to myself. I’d done nothing wrong and I left at the insistence of Lawson’s spouse. If cops or anyone else needed to reach me, they could call the cell phone number on my old card – as long as they called before I got a new phone.
I wasn’t going home, I had no home to go to anymore. I was going to find a new home.
Instead of turning right, I turned left out of the parking lot and drove until I had to refuel the car. Got a coffee, a soft drink and two sandwiches before leaving the Quikfill gas station. Drove until I got to Nataly, a town I’d never been to before. Seemed promising.
I booked a room for two nights at Moe’s Motel. Lucky me, they had a “two for one” sale. After a quick shower, I ordered Italian food for delivery to my room. I ate the entire meal while pretending to watch Wheel of Fortune on the black and white tv. This wasn’t the first time I’d needed alone time, I knew what to do. Stuffed the empty containers back into the delivery bags and walked them to the dumpster at the back of the motel. On the way back, I grabbed a spare blanket and pillow from the trunk of my car so I didn’t have to sleep on or in the motel’s bedding. After setting my phone to recharge overnight, I arranged a 7 a.m. wake-up call.

I knew I would miss Tammy and I knew that wouldn’t last forever. But the pain was hitting harder and sooner than I’d expected, and it made me sluggish by the time I got to work.
The timer on the office coffee maker hadn’t worked again. Lawson knew it was broken and refused to spend $30 to get the office a new one. But it was ten to eight and I wanted coffee so I set it for a full pot, since Lawson was supposed to have an 8 o’clock meeting with a client.
Speaking of which, Lawson arrived as I was removing a blue mug from the dishwasher.
He was sobbing, his voice was hoarse and he grabbed one of my ankles as he fell over. I tried to back up but he pulled me towards him. The sight of him set my blood cold. I think he was repeating “can’t sleep” and “bells” before I shook my leg hard enough to force him to let go. He responded by covering his head with his hands and pulling his knees to his chin. That’s when I saw blood leaking from his ear and nose.
I wanted to run but what if Lawson died? I would be the number one suspect being both his only employee and the last person to see him.
He didn’t smell of alcohol or other substances, not even his usual after-shave. Figuring his distress was emotional not medical, I shook Lawson by the shoulder until Lawson clearly demanded that I “stop that.”
When I let go of him, Lawson went back to the fetal position and kept repeating “bells”. Foolish, I know, but I kept seeing flashes of the vision from yesterday when levitating Lawson’s head exploded. I asked him, in a voice shakier than I’d ever heard myself speak, if he could stand, if he wanted help to stand, and if he wanted me to get a chair for him. He kept saying “bells”.
I decided to call Emergency Services and used the office landline for the best reception. Police sometimes respond if a 911 call cuts off in a suspicious way and I didn’t want to talk to them. I promised to stay until the medical personnel arrived.
As a result, I was ready to greet EMS personnel when I heard the door slam shut just a few minutes later. Faster response than expected, but good luck for Lawson.
Except it wasn’t EMS, it was Lawson’s wife Dixie, purse in one hand, take-out coffee in the other. She ran in, screaming for Lawson. Don’t ask me how she managed to avoid seeing her husband lying on the floor but damn if she wasn’t a full-blown concern at that point.
“He was screaming about bells,” she said in that breathless kind of half-whisper, half-scream I’ve heard in movies. Didn’t know people talked like that for real. “Said the bells woke him up soon as he fell asleep. Told him I didn’t hear no bells. Woke up to blood all over his pillow.”
I waved at her, pointed to the phone at my head and then to Lawson. She screamed when she saw him. I covered the receiver with his hand and said I was staying on the line until the ambulance arrived.
Dixie grabbed the receiver. “Go, get out,” she whispered, “lemme keep this in the family.”
Didn’t have to tell me twice. I left the key to the building and my business card next to the landline base and left. It took effort but I forced myself to walk, not run, down the hall to the back door. No need to draw attention to myself. I’d done nothing wrong and I left at the insistence of Lawson’s spouse. If cops or anyone else needed to reach me, they could call the cell phone number on my old card – as long as they called before I got a new phone.
I wasn’t going home, I had no home to go to anymore. I was going to find a new home.
Instead of turning right, I turned left out of the parking lot and drove until I had to refuel the car. Got a coffee, a soft drink and two sandwiches before leaving the Quikfill gas station. Drove until I got to Nataly, a town I’d never been to before. Seemed promising.
I booked a room for two nights at Moe’s Motel. Lucky me, they had a “two for one” sale. After a quick shower, I ordered Italian food for delivery to my room. I ate the entire meal while pretending to watch Wheel of Fortune on the black and white tv. This wasn’t the first time I’d needed alone time, I knew what to do. Stuffed the empty containers back into the delivery bags and walked them to the dumpster at the back of the motel. On the way back, I grabbed a spare blanket and pillow from the trunk of my car so I didn’t have to sleep on or in the motel’s bedding. After setting my phone to recharge overnight, I arranged a 7 a.m. wake-up call.

Hi guys, I may be faced with replacing my car if the repair for it becomes to expensive. I currently have a 2013 Chevy Sonic Hatchback, and really enjoy having that body style. I'm not a car guy, and only drive 20 miles a week, at the most.
I've come across a few Mazda3s, specifically 2012 ones, but the one linked is the cheapest/fairest (I think) price - CarMax has one extremely similar for $13,000. I've also found one 2011 Mazda2, which actually has fewer miles than other cars I've come across during this last week searching, which surprised me.
I'm mainly looking for a car that has a low maintenance cost and/or is very reliable. I don't drive very far, but use it 5-6 times a week for a combined 20 miles - my job is super close to my apartment. I wanted some input on how reliable (or not) either of those cars would be.

I am willing to learn anything that isn’t too dangerous or has a high rate of me messing it up and costing myself more money than I have. My buddy has been showing me a few things like changing spark plugs, replacing alternator, things that don’t seem to hard to comprehend.
