In May, we revealed the cover art for Halo: Epitaph, illustrated by Chris McGrath.
Halo: Epitaph is the next novel by Kelly Gay, which will explore the final fate of the Didact in the wake of his defeat at the end of Halo 4 —and his subsequent composition in the Halo: Escalation comic series.
Scheduled for release on January 2, 2024, stay tuned for chapter previews later this year!

THE ARTIST’S CORNER

This month’s piece from The Artist’s Corner is an illustration by David Heidhoff from Halo Mythos, depicting the Desecration of Ulgethon—a first contact encounter that would ignite decades of conflict between the Sangheili and San’Shyuum known as the War of Beginnings.
When the San’Shyuum landed on the desolate world of Ulgethon, a planet that appeared entirely uninhabited, the first pioneer detachment identified a repository of Forerunner relics. Upon arriving at the site, however, they found it inhabited by the Sangheili, and they spoke with their leader—an Arbiter known as Vema ‘Togad, who would come to be known as the Prophet’s Bane.
After learning of their intentions to excavate the ancient relics, ‘Togad slaughtered the San’Shyuum delegation and sent their severed heads back to the Anodyne Spirit as a warning. And so, the War of Beginnings erupted, with the San’Shyuum taking their dreadnought to the skies where it was met by a blockade of Sangheili ships, which is the scene depicted in the artwork below.

2023.06.02 15:39 truckiecookies Who misses the big battles of Third Life? (long post with rules ideas)

Just finished a re-watch of the first season, and I realized I really missed the big fights with 4+ on a side that kept happening in 3rd life; in later seasons that kind of thing was a lot rarer. While it doesn't have to be an every-season thing, I was wondering what kind of rules would encourage those encounters in a future season?
The big things I noticed were:
  1. organic coalition building. Ren was able to leverage an early enchanter into a fairly loyal group before any other 3+ alliances had formed. The threat of the Red King then forced all the other duos into a coalition against them, led to Impulse agreeing to betray Dogwarts, etc. This was also helped by the rarity of cows on the map, since getting bookshelves was a big struggle. This might be hard to replicate, since in later seasons everyone already anticipated the need to form stable but smaller alliances (most explicitly in Double Life, where the rules selected a small alliance for everyone).
  2. A sub point of (1): because enchantments were fully powerful but you still needed the core infrastructure to get there, that probably resulted in fewer, smaller teams. Unless I've forgotten someone, only two fully-powered enchanters got online, plus two villager trading halls. In later seasons, it was just a matter of controlling the enchanter, which got shared around widely (despite Scar's efforts to control it; it's not the enchanter that's an investment, but the effort required to get 30 bookcases), and villagers mostly haven't been used. Similarly, since TNT only used the core recipe, getting a good supply of TNT required investment, so having larger teams made sense. This was partly helped because players regularly logged in outside the game time to work on villager trading halls and Grian's gunpowder farm.
  3. The prohibition on non-reds killing were pretty weak. So a single red life (Scar, Skizz) would start a fight, all the target's allies would jump in to defend them, and then all the Red's allies would jump in to defend him (deliberately casting some shade on Cleo's allies, who kind of left them out to dry). In later seasons, a red's yellow and green allies tended to spectate rather than defend their red ally, so fights didn't escalate. In Last Life, reds abandoned their previous alliances, too, which supercharged this, leading to weaker reds against stronger non-reds.
  4. The boogeyman discourages players from hanging around in groups, since the more people around you, the more likely you are to be near a boogey. In theory a big group could help defend you from the boogey, but usually no one tries fight back against a boogey; running is a better strategy (especially for bystanders who aren't the target). Also, there's the risk of multiple boogey-kills if you're in a big group.
Some of the feel of season 1 probably can't be re-captured, since the players can now anticipate how the game will go, whereas in season 1 everyone really was discovering as they played. But here are some proposed rules that might bring back the Third Life dynamics. I don't think these have to be in every season (every series has been great in its own way), but it would be nice to revisit some of the season 1 dynamics again.
  1. You can only attempt to kill if either (a) you are red, (b) someone is attempting to kill you or your ally. This can chain, so if your ally tries to kill someone and they fight back, you can support your ally.
  2. TNT, enchantments, etc. are base minecraft and the map only starts with a handful of cows. A limited number of enchanting rooms/bookcases, cow farms, villager trading halls, brewing stands, and tnt farms can be built (e.g. there is a limited number of 'permits' for each, and if you don't have the permit, you can't build one. Once you start building, that permit is fulfilled, so permits aren't something that can be passed around. You don't have to build it yourself, if you want to team up with someone who is better at building these things). Maybe there are limits like how many bookshelves or villagers you can have, and how many chests a gunpowder farm can have, which increase as the series goes on. Players are allowed to log-on out of game-time to build these things, since it's kind of boring content if someone spends a good chunk in-game leveling up villagers. I can't think of other structures which would be good to include, but I bet there are some.
  3. Instead of a single boogeyman, you have a boogey-team. Players explicitly join teams, although they can change teams whenever they like (I think using the new armor flairs could be a cool way of doing this visually, signaling team allegiance with different colors, the way the Dogwarts/Pizza banners did). Each session, one team is randomly selected as the boogey-team, and everyone who is on that team collectively has to kill another non-red player (not on their team). If they don't by the end of the session, a randomly selected member or two drops down to red. But if the team is more than 1/2 of the total non-red players in the game, they are automatically selected, and they instead have to kill 1 of their own non-red members (to prevent mega-blobs).
  4. Not really related, but I think a series set in the caves would be a really cool visual twist. There could be a top barrier as well as a world barrier to keep everyone below ground. There would have to be a way to get wood, food, and a few other surface-only things, but with the caves and cliffs biomes, it could be really cool.

the things i'm pretty sure i remember are that his name was jordan (but it's not captain sparklez), and that his skin was a guy wearing purple. i know that's not much but i remember the purple specifically for some reason. it may have been part of other aspects of his channel too, like his banner.
i'm also pretty sure his name was part of his channel name as well, but i've tried to look up things like "jordanplay(s/z)" and things like that but i've got nothing.

Nahida is my bff! I am a super casual player in all things, dont bring that overly competitive elitist (sorry, I used to play WoW and thats where this comes from hahaha) stuff anywhere near me - just play and hang out and have fun! I play on and off, so dont be surprised if I’m offline a bunch sometimes! Im either always online or I am a ghost! Not in a bad way though, I always come back ready to hang out like I never left! I dont care about time zones right now as it is summertime and I can stay up late during the week, and honestly if you happen to be in OCE I might die because I miss my NZ gamer bff and yall are just my favorite people! Also, I run outside for some devils lettuce breaks between rounds!

Hello all.
For a long time I've felt that Minecraft, after the first death, is much less rewarding and I always find that I start to lose interest.
Recently been playing on a multiplayer server with friends and been having a good laugh, but met my untimely demise to what I can only consider to be some sort of server issue.
Was fighting the wither, ended up going to 0hp, with totem in offhand, and the totem didn't pop. First time I've seen something like this happen.
Despite the circumstances the feeling just isn't the same after dying but I really want to get back to how it was before. (recovered most items would just need to reinchant leggings because they were destroyed by wither)
I guess I'm just looking for some advice on the matter. I know that the fun is subjective but I've been considering joining on another account, and starting fresh but passing down my shield (relatively easy to obtain let's be honest), I just like the banner I put on it and thought it could be a nice memento.
Any suggestions would be appreciated :)

-Update the fighting mechanics they've been teasing at for a while. -Add options in world creation to turn on/off sanctuaries. Option 1 world default is pvp with owneoperator able to set 100 x 100 sanctuaries with special banner placements. Option 2 is like 1, but sanc's also apply adventure mode while inside (so unable to grief builds). Option 3 world is default pvp with no option for sanc's. Option 4+ are covered by existing modes. -Add ability for players to claim a 100 x 100 plot as your base with a sepcial banner (default size, size editable in world creation options). A player can claim only one zone. Owneoperator can set pvp rules inside these zones. Such as sanc/pvp only(no grief builds), full pvp(salt the earth). Players cannot claim an area if it overlaps an existing claim. To claim a new area, the player will first need to not hold any claims. -Add clans. Clan members cannot damage each other unless in a free for all arena zones (set by owneoperator). A clan's base zone will expand depending on number of players in the clan, and available unclaimed territory. Free for all arena zones set by owneoperator with banners. Players in a clan cannot hold a separate personal claim (you are either all in, or not in at all). -Map updates. You can toggle your map visibility to others on/off. The only area where you are visible at all times is if you are inside another player's/clan's zone. -Pillageillagevillager options. Ability to increase their damage and if villagers will fight back -Gear. Take some inspiration from minecraft dungeons with (a few) artifacts, new weapons, new armor types. I really enjoyed the different play styles (tank/melee, ranged, pet build, soul build, lightning build, speed, healer, etc.). If not new items, new secondary enchants could accomplish the same thing, with max # per item.

This mod is an addon for JourneyMap that allows you to divide the map into regions and assign them names, colors and a banner.
In this new version you can receive the announcement of entering a frontier in the form of a title, in addition to the already available announcement in chat. You can also choose if unnamed frontiers are announced.
You can now copy and paste the configuration of a frontier, such as the name, color, banner, and visibility and announcement options. You can also undo and redo changes while on the frontier information screen.
Lastly, you can now configure the visibility of the frontier, name and owner, on the fullscreen map and on the minimap separately.

My idea for inventory management and inventory memory.
I've been playing survival for the first time recently. I find it a pain to die, pick up my stuff, and it is all jumbled. That's largely because I'm not a great player and die more times per hour than SciCraft makes iron. But the idea I had to fix my personal aggrievance would also improve so much more and make the game very exciting.

The additions

Imagine if you could make template items. These are gray slot-sized bevelled squares with a dark stencil of the item they represent cut out of them. If they are templates for blocks, maybe the background should be a faded texture of the block itself (instead of a gray background like items with distinct silhouettes may use).
You can also make inventory templates. These are similarly just a square item. I don't know what type of art they should have on them (an etching of a player inventory itself? customisable like banners?)
The point is that inventory templates and template items should feel unusual and different to normal items. That is why they are slot-sized squares, generally "inverted" items.
Now, add a slot to the player's inventory, that only inventory templates can be stored in. I think the best place for this slot is above the offhand slot.
There should be a templating table, I imagine it with anvil and portal sound effects. The whole process of templating should feel like a vein of magic like enchanting.

Usage

Templating

When you open the templating table, it shows you your 'Press E' inventory (so you can see your armor and offhand) but with all non-template items grayed out. All the template items themselves are more vibrant when the templating table is open.
Put an inventory template in the templating table's slot for it. Near that slot there will be some kind of confirm button ("imprint"?). Maybe this could be on the bottom of the inventory with an arrow pointing down on it, then it really feels like stamping the current inventory layout down onto the inventory template (sheet metal stamping or embossing). There will also be a textbox for naming this template, like anvils have.
Then you put the template items you have into any slots you want in the view of your inventory. They will go on top of any item already there. A shadow of them remains in the original slot too, showing that you have only moved their "projection" in this special templating table space. You cannot pick up extra items into those slots if any dropped items are lying around you (this is so that if you cancel the templating, the template items can return to where they originally were, and there won't be problems with inventory overflow).
After you've put all your template items onto slots where you want, you confirm the templating operation. The inventory template should gain the enchanted visual effect, and all of the item templates should be consumed. You are kicked out of the templating table GUI, and the inventory template you just made should pop off of it into your hand.

Inventory templates

Equip the inventory template into your inventory template slot (the new one, above the shield slot). You can always equip these like normal inside your inventory (shift-clicking, drag-and-drop), but you can also equip an inventory template by holding it in your hand and right-clicking (like armor). If you try that while you already have an inventory template equipped, they swap places - you equip the one that was in your hand, the one you were wearing comes to your hand.
While you are wearing an inventory template, if you pick up an item and: 1. you do not already have a partial stack of it for it to join; 2. there is an empty slot in your inventory that has been templated to that item then the item will go into its templated slot. This means armor and shields can be equipped automatically as soon as they are picked up for example.
I've been thinking that when you die, your equipped inventory template should remain equipped.
The game will have a new keybind, and a new button in the inventory that performs the same action as the keybind. The action sorts your inventory according to your currently-equipped inventory template. It puts swords into slots you templated to hold swords, granite into slots you templated to hold granite, and moves wrong items out of templated slots. If items are already in a compatible slot, it won't move them. If the inventory is too full to clear all junk out of templated slots and you don't have the item that is really meant to go there, the junk will stay in that slot (normally it would be replaced by the item that the template says should be there).
This means that while building something, your inventory and hotbar can get scrambled, but you can conveniently reset it to an organised state you're familiar with. This means you can easily separate out junk and ditch it, especially if more inventory features like being able to dump lines of your inventory at once into a chest were also added. That's more UX though rather than game element, not in the scope of this gameplay-based inventory improvement suggestion.
You can also carry several templates with you and hotswap between them depending on the job immediately at hand. For example you carry one template that puts all the building blocks of your current project in the hotbar, and also your combat template that loads your hotbar with your sword, bow, and shield so that you can beat up mobs who come to disturb you during construction.

Flair ideas

These are some ideas I had about visual effects. Not related to behaviour, but could make interactions feel nicer. Lmk what you think.
If you're wearing an inventory template, then all the slots you put item templates onto have the miniature shape of that item lightly shaded onto its background. Real items in those slots would cover up the small symbols of what is templated to be there, even in most of the cases that it's the wrong item - maybe not for example, torches because they are so thin, or mangrove trapdoors; there's a hole in the middle and you might be able to see the template symbol through that.
When you put the inventory template into the templating table, the table itself gains a model of the inventory template on top of it, like you're looking down at the template and laying out on it directly.
I also think it would be neat if inventory templates are held in your hands the same way that maps currently are.
When you swap inventory templates by right-clicking one in your hands, the swap is executed with the item pickup animation on your hand to make it obvious that the swap was successful. The armor wearing sound (otherwise a custom one) could also play.
I think this is a great inventory solution that is actually worked into the game as an unlockable gameplay mechanic itself.
Obviously it doesn't solve all the problems that the rising requests for GUI-based inventory conveniences would (e.g. shift-clicking and dragging in an inventory, taking only one item from a stack, etc.), but it would be fully compatible with these other inventory improving suggestions, and it adds an immersive vanilla-feeling way to do some things that are even more powerful (like custom-sorting your inventory on-the-fly, mid-battle, mid-caving, mid-build).

Requests for feedback

  1. Should template items be called stencils instead? Is there another better word?
  2. After using the templating table, should the new inventory template pop off as an item that you can pick up with the satisfying pop noise, or should it just go directly into your inventory so there's no risk of losing it? I can't remember what things like anvils do.
  3. Would it be more fun if the inventory template you are wearing also dropped when you die? Because of the right-click-to-equip functionality, picking it up first from among your items and right-clicking it isn't so bad either, if you're lucky enough to pick it up within your hotbar during your mad scramble to recover your death's items in the nether.
  4. I have not thought at all about the best ways that template items and inventory templates themselves can be obtained in the game. What do you think?
  5. What if item templates that are still items behaved like template slots? Then you could temporarily have a template slot for an item. E.g., you're going caving for lapis. You probably wouldn't want to have a permanent slot for lapis in your inventory template. But you could just make a lapis template item, and now any lapis you pick up will go on top of that template item. If you click on that in your inventory, it picks up the lapis first. If you click again on it now, it puts down the lapis and picks up the template item. (If there was no lapis on top of it, it just picks up the template item straightaway like a normal item.) Is this a good idea?
  6. Anything else

I won't bore you with too many details unless you are interested. We are a mostly vanilla bedrock smp realm. We are 10 months in and have established kingdoms, borders, banners, shopping district, a pvp arena. There are 4 kingdoms oriented in the cardinal directions. We are rebuilding our Southern and Western Kingdoms. Looking for all player types from around the globe. Must be willing to commit some time, play regularly, and function in a team environment. Must be willing to spend 50% of your time taking direction from Kingdom leadership to aid in group projects. We are insanely active for a realm. Players that go on hiatus for an extended period of time without notice are removed. We are very structured and team oriented. No griefing... no f bombs... we are mostly adults with jobs and we just love Minecraft. We have no plans for any resets and plan on keeping this world forever. We have only explored up to 10000 blocks away from spawn, so 1.20 updated chunks wont be that far away. If you join and contribute then your kids or significant other can join as a vouched member as well. We will soon be migrating to an Apex server. Who are we?
Ready 2 Rez is a medium sized clan formed during Curse of Osiris, although most of us started playing Destiny long before that. We're based out of both the UK and the US, with a pretty even split of members between the two.
What do we do?
We focus mainly on raiding. Sherpa runs, raid seals, flawless runs, all of it. We have events channels set up in our discord server making it super easy to sign up to a raid run whether you're experienced or need to be taught. We're not massively into PvP but we've got several people with the Flawless and Glorious seals and we occasionally like to get a group of 6 together when Iron Banner comes around. We also play other games together like Sea of Thieves, Diablo, Warframe and we have our own Minecraft realm. Some of the guys who met through the clan even get together regularly for DnD sessions.
What kind of players are we looking for?
Anyone who is active and willing to communicate and play with us. We have no skill requirement or experience requirement. We keep our clan number at around 30 - 40 members because we are trying to be an active clan of close-knit players. You don't have to be a hardcore player, we just ask that you play the game a couple of times a week at least and regularly speak to us in our discord server, even if it's just to chat about the weather. But you'll also find clan members in there ready and waiting to help you with whatever you need, whether it's a raid, dungeon, exotic mission or whatever else.
Why join us?
Fun is our main goal when we get together to play, both in-game and amongst ourselves. What I mean by this is that none of us take ourselves too seriously and basically the clan is full of fools making poop jokes.
Does platform matter?
The platform you play on doesn't matter at all. Most of us are on Xbox but since you can join discord rooms through the Xbox menu now it really doesn't matter.
