Remove Roth Excess Contribution Question

2023.03.21 01:22 Not_A_Real_Username Remove Roth Excess Contribution Question

Asking for a friend- if one over contributed to a Roth IRA and then lost money on the stock, when they remove the excess contribution, does that mean selling at the loss amount? Or would they have to sell other stock to get to he overcontribution amount?

For example- say one makes an excess contribution of $100. A year later, the value is now $50. To remove the excess contribution, does that mean selling the $50 amount? Or selling the $50 + selling $50 of other investments to get to $100?

2023.03.21 01:20 GlitteringAd5347 Not much has changed from last years taxes, but we owe $6000+ federal.

My wife and I are both public employees we get small incremental raises each year, nothing substantial. We bought our house 3 years ago. We have 3 kids. We have filed jointly since we’ve been married. We’ve used free tax USA the last 4 or so years and have never had a problem with them. I double checked that our incremental raises did not bump us up into the next tax bracket. I’ve double checked the numbers I’ve input. We received a refund of approximately $1600 last year. The only difference is I started contributing to a Roth IRA. I didn’t make it all the way up to the max contribution yet, but have decided to add a little more to the amount when I get the chance. Could this be my we owe so much this year? Or have things changed that much with federal taxes? Sorry if I’m being dumb and these answers are obvious.

2023.03.21 01:14 Sufficient-Engine514 Pay down debt or invest?

I’m 34, a high earner ($250k total comp) living in a HCOL area, and have $125,000 in student loans which I privatized last year and locked in an interest rate of 3.3%. The loans started at $171,000 and I tried to aggressively pay them down as much as possible the past 12-18 months.
My husband and I already max out our 401ks, and max out our joint Roth IRA every year. We also keep our fixed costs fairly low so I can afford to pay the minimum monthly payment of my student loans which is $1700 and still have $2-3k left a month. I have been trying to throw $2500-4k at my student loans each month but now am debating just paying the minimum and pivoting the extra money to a brokerage account.
I really enjoy my career but what would bring me true happiness is work optionality later in life, even if I continue to work until retirement. Being able to retire early or work part time later in life gives me a feeling a freedom I find a lot of joy in.
I’d love to hear other people’s thoughts on what they would do. I acknowledge this is a very first world problem but I didn’t grow up with money so sometimes I second guess myself and I really appreciate the insight of this community.

2023.03.21 01:01 LuketheDiggerJr Was the Space Race a Cold War Conspiracy?

During the 1960 election cycle, Dick Nixon was quoted setting the date for a moon landing. See Missiles & Rockets magazine November 1960.
John Kennedy was quoted before the 1960 election in Missiles & Rockets saying that the USA should not set date for a moon landing. His mind was changed in 1961.
I'm gonna let you go ahead and Do Your Own Research, DYOR, on the statements made by both candidates before and after the 1960 election.
The Soviets are on the record. The Soviets are NOT RACING to put a man or woman on the moon. They were never in the race. Let it sink in.
Yet JFK pleaded with Krushchev several times..." Let's go to the moon together. "
In a few months, JFK would be dead, LBJ was president and Viet Nam was kicking off with the false flag Gulf of Tonkin.
The Space Race transformed from a scientific adventure into a dick waving contest.
The only country in a race to the moon was the US.
The Soviet scientists would never risk sending a man into the Van Allen Belts. They only send turtles to the moon!
The same Soviet scientists, who copied our ww2 bombers, our A-bombs and space shuttles, they never venture beyond the Earth Radiation Belts.i
The Soviet ICBM menace lasted for a half century. With nuclear subs and hypersonic misslies. But they can't figure out Space Radiation?
What gives?
Apollo 17 was 50 years ago.
Not a single human has been outside of Low Earth Orbit in 50 years.
Technology does not stagnate like this.
100 years ago any dumb shit with $500 could buy an airplane and make newspaper headlines.
Today, in 2023, you need a Billion $ Dollars to get into low earth orbit.
And NASA will spend Billions every year to protect Apollo Heritage Sites, to protect the No Fly Zones.
Because Apollo was a lie.

2023.03.21 01:01 Matchew024 Breadwinner vs job security

Evening all! I hope this is a good place to post this question regarding finances between my spouse and I.
I'm currently not working my off day so that cuts my pay about $1400 a month. My wife pretty much doubles my income. She was instructed by her older sister that we should be splitting everything 50/50. I'm not against this because we have 3 kids together. We're separated currently for mutual financial benefit. I'm sleeping on her sisters couch till I can find a transfer. This is currently in the works now!
The thing is, my wife is the spender. I'm the one that wants emergency savings, money in both bank accounts, I don't want to live paycheck to paycheck. I have federal benefits so I'm sure we are saving on Healthcare. Plus I have i have a matched 5% going into a thrift savings plan and 5% going into a Roth IRA. We took out two loans from my retirement to get caught up on bills and pay off some stuff. And the other to move the family across the country so she can start this new job. I pay about $90 a paycheck on these two loans.
My question is : is 50/50 a correct assessment when she is the one that goes out, impulse buys, and spends because she can?
I'm trying to pay down credit cards, pay off cars and trying to live as frugal as possible. My only vices are cannabis and nicotine. But I only spend about $120 per $1500 bi weekly take home.
How were doing it now is I pay my car bill ($550) her car bill ($850) She gets a discount on rent half 1st paycheck other half second. She covers car insurance, phone bill, food expenses etc. Kids are all in school, I help with lunch money.
Extra expenses hit this last paycheck ($73 oil change) ($100 birthday expenses) I pay her sister $100 a month in rent as well as snack foods (around $240) a month. All other money goes towards gas to get to work and credit cards.
I may be freaking out now because I just dipped into my savings. I'll put it back next paycheck but still. It's hard to talk with her about finances because I don't want to tell her to not spend her money because she makes all of it.
How do others do it? How can I talk with her about it? I read the other day that some couples put all their money into 1 account for bill's and family expenses, each party takes 5% for fun money.
I just don't know what to do.

I'm working with a seed round startup in San Francisco looking to hire a 4th person to be one of the Founding Engineers. This startup is creating a turnkey Kubernetes solution that enables teams to easily and quickly deploy scalable Kubernetes infrastructure. This would be very useful for teams doing greenfield implementations, and especially startups that have limited DevOps resources but need to scale rapidly.
Must have experience as a Golang Developer and experience with Kubernetes. Previous experience as an Infrastructure Engineer and/or Terraform experience is a plus. Not a remote job. Looking to collaborate with someone in the San Francisco office 3 days a week. Paying $170-200k base and .5-2% equity.

2023.03.21 00:53 BigClitMcphee The whole "suffering is a virtue" nonsense.

Many a Christian is poor, living hand-to-mouth, and exhausted from working too hard. For poor kids, it is hard to wear hand-me-downs and go hungry. To be told that someday, you'll wear nothing but silk and eat as much as you want in a house of gold, makes all the hard days and hungry nights bearable. For a slave, to be told that you'll have all your heart desires someday makes the hunger, whippings, brandings, bodily violations, and casual humiliations bearable. That is the most insidious and manipulative thing to me. To tell someone, anyone, that they can and must bear hardships because "Your suffering makes your reward in Heaven greater" is the worst con. Especially because the megachurch pastors live in big houses and drive fancy cars; straight couples are allowed to be married but gay people must stay celibate or "convert" to heterosexuality; and you can't make ends meet but the capitalist throws his money away on vanity projects. I deserve to be financially stable. I deserve to be happy. I DON'T deserve to suffer. I am NOT a mundane martyr.

2023.03.21 00:30 Belugacraft What should I do with $80k in Savings account?

I have $80k in my Capital One Savings account with an interest of 3.40%, and I am not sure what I should do with it. Should I just let it sit there? Should I open another HYSA that's higher than 3.40% and put half of my money in there?
This is what I have opened:
I'm 26 making $85k/year. I started my Robinhood account in 2020 before I landed my full-time job, allowing me to open retirement accounts. I've heard people say don't just leave your money in cash, but do something with it/invest. But I'm not sure what else I should do besides what I have already done above. Please advise!
Edit: since 2 people asked, I’m not saving for anything specific. Maybe a house but that’s like 10 years or more later

2023.03.21 00:25 PrivacyParanoia Card Recommendation Please!

Hey there! Thinking about what card to apply to next. I got a promotion from Amex Plat for 150,000 signup bonus for $6k spending/6mo. Easily attainable & the bonus seems really good to pass up. I've also been considering the CSP/CSR, wondering if the Chase trifecta is worth it for me. In addition to the Amex Plat, I've been considering the other Amex Plat cards as well such as the Morgan Stanley and Schwab versions.
I have E-Trade brokerage account for Backdoor ROTH/IRA as well as Savings Acc & reoccurring ETF investments w/ them. E-trade has about $13k in ROTH, $18k in savings, $5k in stock market. I have Schwab brokerage account as well as checking account w/ direct deposit setup. Schwab brokerage account has about $170k value in investments now, spread across stocks and ETFs & checking @ around $9k. $35k additional spread across various savings accounts.
I currently use Freedom Flex for all dining to get 3x cash back. I use Venture X as my catch all for 2x. Apple for 3x when I buy Apple products. I never use Discover since they converted my IT card to Miles without my permission & refuse to change back. I use Venture X for travel expenses to get 10x hotel/car, and 5x flights. I started comparing w/ Chase recently, but it seems so far that Venture X has had better deals. My fiancé has some Cap1 or Citi card that gives him 6% on groceries, so I don't need that category to be considered.
I'm interested in learning more about Chase point multipliers, because for Venture X, it's only 1x value but with CSR you could get higher multipliers.
I feel like I need to get a better cash back card on my dining since it's my highest expense monthly. Also potentially a travel card because when I do travel, the expenses are high, comparable to dining vs other lower usage categories. My goal is to get a new card every 6months(ish) since that's what's recommended for churn/better score/etc. I know it's a bit sooner than 6mo since my last card only 3 months ago, but Amex card seemed too good to pass up w/ current promo.
Some random facts: I despise United Airlines & will likely never travel w/ them again, so if a specific card gives better points for that airline, I don't care. I primarily fly from/to LAX, JFK for domestic. International trips are usually to Asia, sometimes Europe. 26yrs old if that matters. Lease for car will be up soon & will be debating if I want to UbeLlyft everywhere instead of getting a new car (will still need to do the math if it makes sense, but maybe some card with UbeLyft rewards could be good to keep in mind)
Thanks in advance for the help & happy to answer any clarifying questions or if I left something out.

2023.03.21 00:24 PracticalLavishness Help streamline my budgeting documentation on Mac?

I have a very effective but primitive way of keeping tabs on my finances. Every year I make what I call a "Rolling Budget" in Apple Notes for Mac. I enter all of my expected payments for the entire year manually so I can plan in advance. It's not so much a budget as it is a schedule of payments with projected expenses and earnings. I enter everything manually. That really helps keep me involved in my finances, but it would be great if I had a way to auto populate these fields.
Is there a better way to do this?
Here is a hypothetical example:

Payday Jan 1, 2023 expected $3000 (actual $3115) to primary checking account.
2023 paycheck 1 of 24.
-----------------
465 actual remainder (anticipated 350 remaining)
Checking balance $5465
2023 paychecks remaining: 23
2023 Roth IRA contributions $500
Credit card balance $750
Car loan balance: approx $6500. Payments remaining: 15

Payday Jan 15, 2023 expected $3000 (actual $2985) to checking account #1.
2023 paycheck 2 of 24.
---------------
1150 actual remainder (anticipated 1165 remaining)
Checking balance $6615
2023 paychecks remaining: 22
2023 Roth IRA contributions $1000
Credit card balance $0
Car loan balance: approx $6025. Payments remaining: 14

et cetera...

et cetera...

2023.03.21 00:12 Rincewinded Epic rap battle between Chidi and "L"

Verse 1: Chidi
Listen up L, I'm here to educate, On ethics and morals, you're way too late, Your mind games and tricks won't work on me, I'll break down your arguments, logically.
You think you're smart, but let me tell you, Intelligence alone doesn't make you true, It's how you use it, for good or for bad, And in this rap battle, you'll see who's sad.
Verse 2: L
Ah, Chidi, always so uptight, I'll have you know, I'm a detective, alright? My mind is sharp, my logic is sound, I'll find your flaws, and bring you down.
You talk about morals, but what do you know, You can't even make a decision, it's a no-go, I'll outsmart you, every single time, And show you what it means to commit a crime.
Verse 3: Chidi
You claim to be a detective, but what's the score, Your methods are questionable, and that's for sure, You push yourself to the brink of insanity, And for what, to catch a criminal's vanity?
My philosophy is simple, to do what's right, To make the world a better place, without a fight, And while you may have your victories, You'll never understand true empathy.
Verse 4: L
Empathy, ha! You think that's the key, To solve the world's problems, that's funny to me, I'll take down criminals, one by one, And make the world a safer place for everyone.
Your ethics and morals won't save you now, I'll expose your flaws, and show you how, To think outside the box, and break the rules, To catch the bad guys, and never play the fool.
Verse 5: Chidi
You may have caught some criminals, but at what cost, Your obsession with justice, has left you lost, You don't care about people, or their well-being, All you care about is winning.
But I won't stoop to your level, I won't compromise, My values and principles, they're what make me wise, So go ahead L, play your mind games, But in the end, it's compassion that truly tames.
Verse 6: L
Compassion, you say, well that's cute, But in the real world, it's not enough to refute, The evil that lurks, in the hearts of men, It takes more than feelings, to take down the sin.
So go ahead Chidi, hold on to your ideals, But in the end, it's results that reveal, Who's really right, and who's truly just, And in this rap battle, it's me, I trust.
Outro:
Chidi: It's not about winning or losing, it's about doing what's right.
L: It's about catching the bad guys, and making the world a safer place.
Chidi: But at what cost?
L: The cost of justice, and the price of peace.
Fork am I having fun with CHAT-GPT....this actually turned into a weird battle of "who does most good phliospher or detective" and was very, very topical imo.

2023.03.21 00:02 Guesticles Mother aging out of TSP. Looking at options.

My mother turned 70 this year, and is close to aging out of her TSP plan from being in the Military. She spoke with the financial squadron on base and they were less than helpful, and didn't have any advice for her.

She's talking about possibly rolling it over to something (she doesn't know what, and doesn't know her best options), but isn't sure what to look at/for.
I've started looking into it for her (she's very protective of her finances) as she's looking to purchase a house and planning on withdrawing the full house amount (and fees) from her TSP, but I wasn't sure if there was a better option like taking a mortgage and just doing withdraws from her TSP.

Based upon her age, in 2 years it looks like she'll have to start doing RMD (Required Minimum Distributions). Is she better just keeping her funds (Low 7 figures) in her TSP account and just doing RMDs or should she transfer it over to a ROTH or something like that?

We talked about getting a financial advisor for her (as well as my wife and myself) but have heard that they're often not worth it. Even if they are, what should we look for?

Any information would be helpful. Thanks!

2023.03.21 00:00 Rincewinded A Poem about Spirals

"Spirals, spirals, all around, A vortex of madness that astounds, From depths unknown they do arise, Twisting and turning 'til sanity dies.
In the darkest depths of mind and space, The spirals writhe with vile grace, A cosmic force that does compel, All who see them to a darkened hell.
In ancient books and eldritch lore, The spirals dance, forevermore, Their patterns etched in stone and bone, Whispered by cults, in tongues unknown.
Through time and space, they do expand, A force beyond mortal command, And those who dare to seek their gaze, Are lost forever in their maze.
The spiral's pull is ever strong, A siren's call, a mournful song, A descent into the abyss, Where madness reigns and terror is.
Oh, spirals, spirals, all around, A vortex of horror that astounds, In Poe and Lovecraft's tales of dread, Their power looms, a haunting thread.
And though we fear their twisting might, We cannot help but seek the sight, Of spirals, spirals, evermore, A haunting symbol we can't ignore."
Man we live in creepy times, I asked chatGPT "merge the styles of HP Lovecraft and Edgar allen Poe to make poem about spirals" is what I wrote and this has to be my favorite chatGPT poem so far.
Sadly paraphrasing as history function seems borked and i dont remmber my exact wording,...the part where it mentions poe and lovecraft was a bit eh but god damn I liked this one :D Quite obivously spirals was chosen from Uzumaki.
Personally I like this crossover episode! :D
