2023.06.08 05:05 Western-Letterhead66 Minnesota 12 hour race, gear and food check
Looking for some feedback and suggestions for people who have done the toughest mudder (12 hour race).
Food: 1. thoughts on doing a body detox or carb detox 1-3 weeks out and then loading back up on carbs the week before. 2. Best during race foods. Things like bagels, nut butter, PB&J, gels, energy drinks, avancados, white breads, cliff bars. 3. Tons of salt tabs, energy drinks, calorie dense foods.
Gear: 1. Really looking at the wetsuit vs compression wear conversation. A lot of forms or past posts talk about needing a wetsuit or very elastic wetsuit like frogskins. Minnesota weather is pretty good in July, would a like .5nm wetsuit with neoprene (like frogskin) be too much? 2. Trail shoes: how many do people bring?
Final tapering and training weeks before: General discussion on if people do full marathon tapers for this or just rest and recover.

2023.06.07 14:59 HomeostasisAchieved Put yourself out there if you want to get into this industry. Now is the time. Here's a slightly edited version of an email I sent to a potential mentor. Take the time and do something similar. It'll pay off eventually. PS We have roles to fill, inquire within.
About Me. I'm a highly adaptive senior management professorial with 15 years of nomadic leadership experience that includes:
- directing healthcare operations for a 40 unit assisted living community,
- instructing VA hospital logisticians on inventory management RTLS systems,
- developing technical training curriculum for software utilizing RTLS, IoT, RFID technology
- coordinating legal strategies for local small businesses and nonprofit organizations, and
- performing discounted legal services for friends, family, and a few close colleagues (every legal professionals favorite past time)
I graduated from Case Western Reserve University in 2008 with degrees in Political Science, Communications, and Sociology. I followed it up with one year of retail management before earning my JD from Ohio Northern. I specialized in nonprofit transactional law and commercial real estate transactions before being admitted to the Ohio bar.
https://www.linkedin.com/in/ckehn/ About Us Veteran Owned. Family Grown. Agora Farms. Minnesota's premier destination for cannabis, concerts and camping located on 26 acres in beautiful Palisade, MN. Honestly, where we will be in 4 to 5 years could vary greatly. We might be limping in as a startup, but the possibility exists where we come out of the gates with massive legitimacy (aka capital). It will be interesting to see what comes to fruition and what gets scrapped. I started our think tank back in December once election polls were tallied and the DFL picked up a majority. Between the 4 of us we have a combined 80 years of personal, professional, and entrepreneurial experience in the cannabis industry.
Our property is secured and owned by a partner willing to partition off sections. Meaning, we can set up a "holding" LLC that houses both our cannabis microbusiness AND we can have a workaround cannabis adjacent portfolio (frisbee golf, small venue, "gifting" CannaCampground, etc). In theory, the latter should be far enough removed from our cannabis operations so that financing options (VA business loan) now become available. Up to 350k to put towards venue, cabins, etc..
Which we will need because all of our capital will be going toward getting our 5k indoor canopy up and operational, followed by our
http://Sitkagold.com inspired product line. Our target for the all-weather greenhouse setup and nonvolatile hash operations is estimated at just under 400k. Between 4 of us we have licensing priority, social equity status, and as of now, just under 100k pledged from my friends and family.
Social Equity will bring us up another 50k to 150k via grants. We are hoping to pick up the remainder from my extended family who have shown a pattern in investing large sums in our family businesses (assisted living property management). Not sure how cannabis will fly with them. My Aunts and Uncles just recently reprogrammed from their DARE update in grade school. The end result could be an additional $10k or it could be $500k+ if they get their investment team involved.
Video of property:
https://youtube.com/shorts/ncSQ9o5EyYA?feature=share Here is our 5 year gameplan in its most basic format for the two ventures + 501c4: Agora Farms, LLC; will house all our cannabis business ventures - 5k sq ft indoor canopy & nonvolatile hash processing with sitkagold.com inspired product line
- Hands on training courses & industry consulting
- Hash Bash event license & event license consulting
- Minimalist retail location until expansion
- Indoor (gaming lounge) / outdoor (yard games) onsite consumption expansion
- New expansion (if legal): onsite consumption & retail in high traffic area; (e.g. hipster indoor music venue with 2k indoor canopy where proceeds go to nonprofits + recording studio + cannabis lounge)
The Agora Campground & Venue, LLC; will house our cannabis adjacent business endeavors - 5 acre "gifting" Canna-Campground
- Feng shui 10 acre music venue / pavilion / amphitheater
- Frank Lloyd Wright inspired 9 hole professional frisbee golf course interwoven in venue;
- Sugar Shack Music inspired, intimate riverfront drawbridge stage;
- Ten "gifting" Airbnb cabins along our 1 mile of Mississippi riverfront
- Hands on Cultivation Training & Cannabis Consultation Services (pro bono & for profit)
- Vendor Pavilion / Monthly Farmers Market / Co Op
- Pickle ball and basketball courts
Minnesota's Network of Innovative Cannabis Entrepreneurs; a cannabis nonprofit you and I define together - If you're into a nonprofit competitor to High Times cannabis cup, I have a fundraising initiative that starts with our annual Ganja Games / Hash Bash held at our venue; will extend to regional areas like Duluth, Rochester, MSP as it draws a larger crowd.
- Request additional 2k training canopy from OCM; proceeds from sales go to funding first annual Ganja Games / Gala. Revenue dispersed among board selected causes
Mentor, Partner, or both? Have you ever read the children's book, "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie?" Be warned;
If you mentor me professionally, I will ask you to mentor me politically.
If you mentor me politically, I will ask you to advise our team.
If you advise our team, you will want to join our team.
If you join our team, we will make waves in this industry.
I need a cannabis legislative expert to advise with the formation & structure of our fully endorsed microbusiness and cannabis adjacent portfolio. I have no insight on your current cannabis plans so I'm just going to start off by asking if you'd consider mentoring me professionally & politically?
Professionally, I am going to spend the next 7 years putting together an impressive cannabis portfolio from scratch. Agora Farms, LLC will house all our cannabis ventures. Agora Farms Campground & Events, LLC will hold our cannabis adjacent portfolio.
Politically, I am going to spend the next 2 years butting heads with both anti cannabis lobbyists and incompetent state legislators on both sides of the aisle. However, my main focus will be on removing all the absurd red tape weighing down small business owners in MN's cannabis industry via any means necessary (within the confines of the law). The following 2 years I would like to spend shadowing you as an advocate and lobbyist for the industry. I'll spend 2 years strategizing for a 2 year state senate run leading up to a 2 year campaign for the 2030/2032 election. I'm dead serious. Watching cannabis committee discussions slapped me awake politically.
Team Needs:
- a small business legal advisor to help with partnership agreements and formation inquiries
- a cannabis legislative expert to advise on business plan specifics
- a passionate cannabis cultivator with a 5k canopy gameplan similar to our own
- an IT genius with a passion for both cannabis and web design
- expert legal advice on formation and tax implications
- business plan coherently conveyed with air tight numbers we can bring to our big target investors
- Amsterdam inspired nonvolatile hash manufacturer with a creative mind
Interesting Facts / Goals - My first book will be called Marijuana Ministries: Awakening God's People to Gazelka Grassroots Advocacy. A satirical take on Gazelka's first published book that will set the tone for a series of books examining the intricacies of Smart Approaches to Marijuana. The first is entitled, "Reefer Sadness: 7 things Kevin Sabet doesn't want you to know about anti cannabis lobbyists." It will examine the nonprofit's founders, followers, and funding.
- Once we get our cannabis business plan finalized I'm going to set up a "Making a Cannabis Company / State Senator" online crowdsourcing subscription (Patreon, substack)
- If you Google "Minnesota + cannabis + application + licensing + contract" I had an idea in 2015 that was literally for this exact need, aka The Cannabis Administration, Licensing, and Monitoring tool, (CALM). I was working with our system administrator on the subsidiary proposal when we lost our VA contract and let go. That was 7 years ago. Maybe it's time I dig through my old hard drive because 27 more states will be looking for the same thing eventually
- Looking to partner with newly accredited CannaColleges to offer a central campus via Palisade, MN.

2023.06.07 08:31 Gist_it Here's how Canadian wildfires are worsening air quality across the U.S.
Canadian wildfires are causing air quality to plummet across the U.S., affecting states from the Midwest to the East Coast.
The backdrop: Canada is experiencing a brutal wildfire season, with extreme weather partially caused by climate change. * So far, 2,214 wildfires have burned over 8 million acres across Canada, with 249 categorized as out of control.
Affected areas: Poor air quality alerts are in effect for parts of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, New York, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, and North Carolina.
Precautions to take: Disaster preparedness expert Jeff Schlegelmilch recommends staying indoors, using air filters, wearing an N95 mask outdoors, and avoiding strenuous activities during poor air quality alerts. * Schlegelmilch advises treating air quality as an ongoing health concern rather than a one-time event.

2023.06.06 19:22 alebau tenant rights in mn?
(i live in MN) i have been without AC for about a month. unfortunately, MN has had an awful spring filled with extremely hot weather, so my apartment manager originally said that because of the fluctuating temperature, ie being freezing one day, and a sauna the next, they weren’t able to turn the AC on. that was about a month ago, and they stated they turned it on sense. however, almost half of the units are without AC right now. they gave us all portable AC units which to no avail, are not helping at all. It’s also a loft style so we have floor to ceiling windows filling the apartment that cannot open, so it’s extremely stagnant, hot air. they said repairs were supposed to be done today but now they’re pushing them back further.
it fluctuates between 85 and 95° in my apartment and I have two dogs, so it’s very concerning how hot it is getting. I did file a complaint with the city and my neighbors did as well but none of us have heard back. It’s getting to the point where I’m gonna have to stay at a hotel, because of how hot it is in the apartment.
I really love where I live and don’t want to move out but I don’t know how much longer I can deal with the hot air. I tried googling tenant rights for Minneapolis/Minnesota, but it just came back with a lot of info on how to file complaints.
any advice?

2023.06.06 14:07 Jackviator The Spacer’s Guide to Caring For Your Pet Human (Part 20)
<<
FIRST <
PREVIOUS Hello, spacers!
On this episode, the group takes a stab at historical reenactments, the author takes some… “
subtle” comedic jabs at certain contemporary events, and we find out where they’ve been hoarding the post-apocalyptic Twinkies.™
As always, I hope you enjoy. :)
——
As the group exited the Air Force base and began heading towards their destination, Kate looked at the surroundings as they walked. The area looked relatively untouched by the chaos of the past few weeks. The only evidence of it was an enormous pillar of smoke in the distance.
As Jack noticed Kate and a few others in the group staring at it, he nodded in understanding.
“That’s downtown Saint Paul, or at least the remains of it. From what we’ve been able to gather, the nuke we couldn’t stop in time exploded almost directly above the Capitol building. We only managed to put out the last of the fires in what little remains of downtown earlier today.”
“…How many people-“
Anticipating the question, Jack cut her off.
“We don’t know. …We may
never know. We can only speculate.”
Kate’s face fell.
“Yeah, I figured that’d be the answer…”
Kate remained morosely silent as they approached the fort. Jack turned to address the crowd.
“Welcome to historic Fort Snelling. …Well, historic to us humans, anyway. Having a fort two centuries old is probably chump change to all of you from a time perspective, eh?”
Kate’s brow furrowed in confusion as she looked up at the stone walls of the fort, its stone tower chock-full of early-1800’s firearm loopholes meant for muskets.
“Wait, what?! …When they said we were going to “Fort Snelling,” I figured it’d be an active military base. Why’re we using a historic site…?”
Jack chuckled.
“It wasn’t actually the military’s decision to do that. A couple days after the bombs fell, a group of survivors moved into the fort. When questioned, I believe the leader of the initial group was quoted as saying “EMPs can’t knock out a big damn wall.” She was right; the stone walls of the fort are a great deterrent to looters and other kinds of people looking for trouble, and it’s easily defensible. Given that we obviously had
way bigger things to worry about at the time, we just let them be.
Then, as more and more people showed up to our Air Force base looking for help, we decided the fort would make a good site for a refugee camp. The original group didn’t object; they actually welcomed the security having others around brought, especially once we started the organized armed patrols a few days ago.”
Y’ggdrasog piped up from beside Kate, a bit of indignation in his tone.
<“That’s all well and good, but what about respecting its historic significance? …Preserving the past, and all that?”>
“Relax. The only truly historic things here are a few of the buildings. The vast majority of what was on display inside said buildings- antique-looking tin cups, butter churns, muskets, that sort of thing- were just modern-made replicas, to give visitors an idea of what the fort used to look like back when it was still in use.
…We’ve actually thrown the vast majority of that junk into those “assimilator” thingies you Collective types brought along with you. It was either that, or burn them to keep warm. …Way I figure it, we can always just make more fake “historic” tchotchkes when we’re not fighting for the survival of our species, eh?”
Y’ggdrasog crossed his arms, and while he was clearly still unhappy about it, relented.
<“…Alright, fair enough...”>
As the group finally passed through the fort’s front gate, Kate could see a veritable sea of tents in the center of the area. They had passed plenty of tents on the way there in parking lots, boulevards and so on, but not nearly to this level of density.
Kate marveled at the sight, leaning toward Y’ggdrasog to murmur.
“People must have fought to get placed in here until there was literally no room left, and the tents were packed in like sardines.”
Y’ggdrasog gave her a quizzical look.
<“…What’s a “sardine?””>
“It's just a- …nevermind, it’s not important…”
Migtryl began to speak as the rest of the group filed through the gate.
<“Here and a few spots outside the fort are where you’ll be working for the most part. We reserved several tents for you to use both in and outside the fort, customized with your biologies in mind. I’ll start by giving you all a tour of the premises, so you can familiarize yourself with the different areas you might be needed.
…Starting off, over there you’ll see the impromptu medical center we’ve constructed. If you have any prior medical experience in your work history, you will be placed there. Next, we’ll be moving to…”>
Migtryl began walking off, talking and occasionally pointing with a wing or leg as they went and the group trailed behind them. As Kate tried her best to keep pace with Y’ggdrasog’s long strides, she could see that the crowds of humans inside the fort were parting like a sea around them, just like they behaved at the runway. Many looked at them with fear in their eyes, others with disgusted sneers.
Kate’s shoulders slumped as she finally realized:
Almost no one trusts them yet. She was so lost in thought over the implications of this that she bumped into Y’ggdrasog, who had abruptly stopped walking. She glanced up at him to see him staring toward a group of humans near the edge of the medical center. His glow was crimson, his eyes haunted. She followed his gaze to see-
Her eyes widened.
Oh no… The man he was staring at lay on a cot under an improvised tarp-tent. They were being tended to by several medical personnel (both human and alien) that were changing the bandages covering their body, and little wonder; they were absolutely
covered in burns.
Before Kate could think of what to do to help her friend, she saw J’Ffrane almost literally materialize between Y’ggdrasog and the bandaged burn victim. Their voice was warm and soothing as they spoke.
<“Feel this moment, accept it, then let it pass. Remember? …Don’t let yourself drown in it.”>
It was like Y’ggdrasog was awakened from a dream as he blinked a few times and glanced at J’Ffrane.
<“Y-yes, I- …I remember...”>
He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, slowly letting it out in a shaky exhale as he turned to Kate, opening his eyes once more to meet her concerned gaze.
<“Come on, let’s not fall too far behind.”>
“…Are you alright?”
Y’ggdrasog gave her a weak smile, though the crimson of his stressful glow remained.
<“Of course I’m not. …But that’s not going to stop me from helping your people.”>
He took one last glance at the burn victim before turning and setting off once more towards the tour group.
J’Ffrane gave an approving nod as he walked away, leaning towards Kate and whispering.
<“He’s come so far... Half a cycle ago, he likely would have been nearly catatonic for the rest of the day.”>
Despite the encouraging words, Kate’s shoulders fell as she started walking after Y’ggdrasog.
“I should have thought of this... There have to be thousands- no, tens of thousands, maybe even
six figures worth of burn victims from the bombs, in these two cities alone!”
<“And we will be with him to hold out a limb to grasp when he needs it. Just as he and I will be there for you, and you two for I, should the need arise.”>
Kate looked up at J’Ffrane, surprised.
“How would we help you?”
J’Ffrane smiled down at her.
<“You already have.
Every person who asks for my assistance helps me immensely just by doing so. It helps me remember that I have a place in the world, and that place is giving the help they so desperately need. …Now then, let’s catch back up to the crowd and find out how we can best do that here, hm?”>
And with that, J’Ffrane’s dissipated as they flew forward towards Y’ggdrasog and the rest of the group trailing along behind Migtryl.
“Hey, wait up!”
——
Despite the brief interruption, Kate hadn’t missed much by the time she caught back up, and she was soon learning more and more of the facilities and service centers the Collective had constructed around the fort.
While the local military stationed in the fort were (rather fittingly) occupying the fort’s centuries-old barracks, they were actually the main supplier of the vast majority of the tents around the compound.
“More tents are being constructed every day for use in the surrounding area,” said Jack. “We ran our own supply of military-grade tents dry a few days ago, but we’ve been able to scavenge more from places like camping supply stores, alongside manufacturing our own from tarps and the like. Not exactly comfortable to live in, but we have to take what we can get.”
Kate put her good hand up to ask a question, shivering a bit as she did so in the crisp, late-autumn air.
“How well do they retain heat in all this cold?”
“A very good question. Normally it would be quite the problem, doubly so given just how damned cold Minnesota can get in fall weather alone. Luckily, however, the Collective came up with a solution. …Migtryl?”
<“We used a few of the fabricators we have at our disposal to create personal solar-powered heating units to heat each tent. …It’s a bit inefficient given the cloud cover, but on even the cloudiest of days they’re able to achieve over 150% of the solar exposure needed to get a full, week-long charge in a matter of hours.”>
Jack chimed in with a smile.
“It certainly beats the bonfires we filled with whatever we could lay our hands on to burn before you all got here, that’s for sure!”
From there, they moved on to the camp’s utilities.
As the water purification plants of the area had been rendered mostly inoperable by the EMPs and cyberwarfare attacks, the Collective had repurposed a few industrial sump pumps to direct water from the Mississippi River into an assimilator system. The assimilator broke it down and removed all the pollutants in the river water until all that remained was potable water, and distributed to locals to drink-
<“…or at least, to those who don’t refuse to drink it, that is.”> Migtryl said.
An alien of a species Kate didn’t recognize (one that almost resembled a snake if not for their arms and upright stature, who was strapped to a mechanical walker to get around the terrain) piped up, beating her to the punch.
<“Why
wouldn’t they drink it?”>
Migtryl paused, glancing at Jack and weighing their words carefully before speaking.
<“…A small, but nonetheless
very vocal portion of the local population seem to be under the mistaken impression we’re putting chemicals, nanites and so on in the water to do things such as influence their actions, up to and including controlling their sexuality, for some reason. …Anyway, such people often choose to simply boil and drink water taken directly from the river itself, instead of taking the purified water rations we offer.”>
In contrast to the shocked and horrified reactions of the aliens around her, Kate merely sighed and rolled her eyes.
Yeah, that sounds about right… Another alien, this time a kentzaré, timidly raised one of their manipulation tendrils.
<“...Have many people gotten sick from doing that?”>
<“Unfortunately, yes. Even boiling the water sometimes wasn’t enough to prevent many such individuals from developing symptoms of several waterborne-based diseases, and that’s not even going into the possible long-term effects of the various pollutants in the water.
We also have individuals here and there who even refuse the fallout-proof masks we offer. …Something about “not using them before, not using them now” and “not living in fear”…?”>
As Kate facepalmed hard enough to leave a handprint mark on her forehead for a minute or two, Migtryl shook his head in frustration.
<“…We must make an effort to always remember that the majority of these people are hurt, scared, and in all likelihood grieving the death of at least one loved one, friend, or what have you. Most do not trust us. We must simply be patient with them, help those willing to receive it, and not give those who are unwilling any further cause for suspicion or hostility. …Now, come along; we have much more to look at.”>
With that, they both turned and began walking towards a long but narrow stone building. As they reached it, Jack turned to the group.
“This is the commissary. It’s where we keep the supplies we distribute to the civilians. It may look small, but looks can be deceiving. …C’mon, let’s step inside. Just remember to dust yourself off first!”
Y’ggdrasog glanced at the door clearly made for human proportions and shook his head, sighing as he turned to Kate.
<“You two go on ahead. I have no desire to work out the kink in my back later from having to be hunched over inside.”>
Kate smiled in amusement as several other taller species of aliens nodded, muttered their agreement and so on.
“Well, sorry on behalf of humanity for us being so short. …Anyway, see you in a bit, Yiggy!”
He winced.
<“…Kate, please, not in front of others…”>
Kate’s smile only widened as she turned and followed J’Ffrane with the rest of the group as they entered the building.
As they descended a set of stairs, Kate was surprised to see that despite its outer appearances, the building went several stories underground. As she descended down the first flight of stairs, a feeling of unease began to eat away at her. Her hairs began to stand on end, goosebumps rising despite the heaters inside the building.
Jack continued his explanation as they continued descending.
“The ground where this building stands was where they initially quarried out a lot of the stone necessary for building the majority of the fort’s walls and buildings back in the 1800’s. When they finished, the line of thinking was “well, we’ve made a really big hole, may as well use it for something.” So they built this commissary to act as a mega-cellar of sorts; it could store enough food to last the initial inhabitants of the fort an entire year.”
As they descended to the final level, Kate looked out across a sizable collection of boxes of various shapes and sizes stacked upon pallets. As she gazed at them, an eerie feeling of familiarity and something being inexplicably, terribly
wrong settled onto her, and she only barely heard Jack continuing to speak.
“Most of the supplies that don’t belong to anyone in particular are either stored here, or wherever we can stuff them in what little free space there is left in the other buildings of the fort. Groups go out every day to scavenge for more food, general supplies, raw materials to put into your “assimilators” to make things like our filtered masks-“
150 spare air filters- <“-as the assimilators and fabricators can only do so much at one time, we scavenge as much food as possible due to most of their time being taken up purifying the polluted water-“>
75 spare half-year water filters- “It’s important to keep track of everything else we store here, so a lot of the work is just tallying everything up. It’s tedious, but very important; we need to know what we have to give those with very specific dietary needs-“
500 cans of spinach, 300 cans of olives, 700 cans of baked beans- “Members of our species still have occasional issues with allergies, diabetes, that sort of thing. I’m told we likely will continue to have those for at least a decade or so before you Collective folks can develop those “immunity implants” necessary to sort them out. …Assuming the average Joe is willing to work with them, when the most advanced tech they had before was-“
3 spare radios, 50 packs of AAA batteries- Kate only just barely managed to drag herself back to the present as she felt J’Ffrane metallic hand gently tugging at her sleeve. She turned to see them wordlessly gazing at her, a concerned expression on their face. Only after their intervention did she notice she had begun to start breathing erratically as Migtryl kept talking.
<“…Beyond moving the supplies where they need to go, the job’s not very physical. For the most part, it’s just counting how much of any one item we have and writing down the results. We usually give the job to people who are injured or otherwise not at their best, but still want to contribute.”>
Migtryl glanced over at Kate, who unbeknownst to him was having a desperate internal struggle to try and keep herself calm.
<“You’d be a perfect fit here, heh!”>
Kate sunk into herself a bit at his words, and found herself wishing she could turn invisible as the group turned to stare at her. Her voice was barely audible as she felt obligated to murmur out a response.
“…I, uh-
pant …d-don’t think that-
pant …would be a good idea…”
Not again, not again… Just stay cool, don’t keep hyperventilating, just move on, just- stop it. Stop stop STOP oh god why can’t I just breathe normally?! Just k-keep cool, just- OH DON’T YOU START CRYING YOU WORTHLESS BI- She felt the touch of J’Ffrane’s metallic hand on her shoulder, bringing her back to herself.
<“Come on, Stardust; let’s take a walk.”>
Kate hesitantly nodded and let herself be led away from the group and up the stairs by J’Ffrane’s gentle leading hand, wiping her tears away as she went. Migtryl glanced at Jack, who was staring after the pair, his expression worried.
<“…Was it something I said?”>

2023.06.05 18:17 tyler735 Season thoughts and outlook as we hit the halfway mark on the season this week
(Long Read)
This week will mark the halfway point of the season. Obviously this season has come with more adversity to work through than probably any other season we have had in MLS with the Reynoso situation and the injuries to Dibassy and Lod to work through. Surprisingly, we have entered the halfway point of the season sitting at 7th in the West and just 3 points from being top 4 in the West.
Statistically, it appears that we could easily have more points than we do and likely should be sitting top 4 in the West if our finishing had been a bit more clinical on the chances we have created this season. Our expected goals vs expected goals against stats paint a picture of a team that has played well defensively (for the most part) and also a team that has created as many (within .1 xG) or more quality scoring chances than our opponents in all but 4 games (out of 16 so far). In our 6 losses we have had a better expected goals stat than our opponents in 3 of those games.
In our recent form over the past 5 games, we have been especially dominant in these types of stats, but the end product hasn’t quite been there in terms of goals being scored. However, I will say the team has been putting in some quality shots in these games and have come out on the wrong end of some terrific goalkeeping and defensive play. Stuver and Clark decided to have some of their best games against us with some miracle saves. Mabika made 2 key goal line clearances for Toronto the other night as well.
In other words, our recent run of form over the past month or so gives reason for optimism going forward. We have looked better both from a statistical point of view and even the “eye test” seems to show a much more aesthetically pleasing style of soccer being played. Which I don’t think is a coincidence that our possession stats have improved, our shots taken have improved, and our decision making appears to be quicker. There have been more dangerous threatening passes in behind lately to utilize all the pace we have in the attack with players like Bongi, Sang-Bin, and Garcia.
We’ve essentially done all of this without our best player on the field for us. Over this past weekend we finally got to see Reynoso make his season debut and he didn’t disappoint. Oddly enough, I think long term this Reynoso situation may prove to be beneficial for us. With Reynoso out, it has forced us to find new ways to create chances in the attack. Even though we have played with a #10, they haven’t been utilized and depended on the same way Reynoso has from that spot. The player that has benefited from this the most this season has been Bongi. It has allowed him to become a focal point in our attack and take more chances this year. His confidence to make plays has grown immensely as the season has progressed and he has evolved into a legitimate attacking threat for us each and every game.
With Reynoso coming back this should only open things up more for a player like Bongi as Reynoso will attract more attention and will be able to hit him on runs in behind. We already saw a glimpse of this against Toronto with Reynoso creating space on the dribble and sending in a back post cross to a wide open Bongi, which led to us scoring our goal.
Beyond Reynoso coming back, I feel like both Sang-Bin and Garcia have been looking much better the past few games. They have both created several dangerous scoring chances and have caused some chaos with their pace. Hopefully the goals start coming for them as they are finally putting in more consistent efforts on the field for us and getting into dangerous areas.
Hopefully we hear more news on Teemu Pukki in the next couple weeks. It certainly seems like there will be some news on this soon given the timing of the roster moves we made on Amarilla and Henry. There was no need to move on from them when we did unless we had a Striker signing essentially agreed to. Given that several sources have now reported on our interest in Pukki, and him being a free agent and able to discuss contract details with another team, it would certainly seem that he may be on his way to Minnesota United very soon.
Adding a guy like Teemu Pukki would be more of a short term solution for the next 2-3 years, but should give us stability at a position we have struggled to find consistency at since we’ve entered MLS. Even at his age, he would still be among the most skilled Strikers in MLS for the next couple years. Most importantly, stylistically he appears to be a fit as well as he has played and been successful in similar formations to what we play and has shown he is able to be effective pressing from the top as well. This shouldn’t be another Hunou/Wanchope type situation where we bring in a player that doesn’t fit what we are trying to do.
As mentioned earlier (even without Reynoso) we have had a very good expected goals output this season, but we have vastly underperformed that number in actually scoring on those expected goals. In other words, adding in a clinical Striker along with maybe the best passer in MLS in Reynoso, we should be able to put away way more of our chances (and even improve upon the total number of chances we create).
We will also be getting Dibassy back in the next couple weeks, which should give a boost to our backline and our ability to close out games. As of a couple weeks ago our remaining schedule was ranked as the 2nd easiest in MLS (this may have changed slightly since), so it really feels like the team did a great job of “weathering the storm” to start the year and now that we are getting key pieces in place, along with a favorable schedule, I can’t help but feel very optimistic for the 2nd half of the season.

2023.06.04 14:29 Kilayna Unseasonably cold
Can anyone explain to me what’s going on with the weather patterns right now?
I’m a transplant from Minnesota and this is my third summer living in Norfolk. The past two years before this, May and June seemed to get off on a much warmer, sunnier start. We don’t seem to be getting that much rain right now, just colder temps and lots of cloud cover. I am really curious as to what’s different this year but can’t find an answer within weather websites. What gives?

2023.06.03 23:22 No-Werewolf-8092 A rant about poor operations
I’ll try to keep this brief: new to education, this year as an education assistant, hired next year to teach special ed in first grade at the same school.
The school is a public charter housed in an old building in Minnesota, and last week there was an electrical fire. We were outside in the sun (minimal cover) with our kids in 90° weather for nearly 2.5 hours and there was no plan for what came after evacuation. Other EAs and support staff ended up going to a nearby gas station to get water to ration as leadership didn’t communicate any sort of “disaster” plan. Somehow no one got heat stroke or heat sickness beyond exhaustion and sunburn, and dismissal and early pickup executed as cleanly as could be.
Classes were cancelled the next day - the fire was minor, but they think everyone running their window AC units caused the wires to catch. Their solution? A patch job with “guidance from an electrician” done by the custodian. We returned the next day with instructions that we can’t use AC. We’re on a streak of 90° days through year end, which is thankfully Thursday.
All state testing is complete. There is no more instructional merit to these last few days. Our students and families are largely within a refugee population and all are at or under the poverty line. Many don’t have health insurance. I asked what to do if a kid has heat stroke - was told to send them to the office (we don’t have a nurse, just admin) and that “her son was in a classroom for a day with temps over 100 and was fine.” Apparently it’s not a state regulation that we need AC to hold classes, and ops/leadership has made it clear they’re prioritizing ending the school year without extending since we’re at quota for missed days with this winter’s storms.
Additionally, I take some psychiatric medications that put me at increased risk of serotonin syndrome (which can be lethal), higher risk with excessive heat. I’m worried both for the kids’ and staff but also my own, and have just been appalled at the handling of this entire situation. It feels so reckless and like such a safety issue.
TL;DR: an electrical fire at school leads to no use of AC for the rest of the year in 90° heat.

- A bolded matchup means that there is a "Probability of Precipitation" greater than 50% in a non-domed stadium at the time of this post.
- An italicized matchup means that it is Game 2 of a doubleheader, which for Pick'Em purposes will not be applicable (only Game 1 is counted, but Game 2 is still included above so that you can be aware that pitching management may be different than a non-doubleheader game day).

2023.06.02 22:36 Last_Canary_6622 Travels Throughout the US: Breakdown of Notable Places Part 1
- Birmingham: I'm honestly surprised at how bad traffic can get in Birmingham, especially considering I've been in bigger cities that managed it better. I pray no major natural disaster happens in Birmingham because the location is not ideal. The city is essentially in a bowl. Zoo was neat though. Are there any particular Pan African celebrations that occur in that area because when I went, there was African decorations everywhere like a block away from the zoo? Milo's makes the best tea!!
- Daytona Beach: We rented a condo for a family reunion there when I was 12. I didn't see the "trashy" things that Daytona Beach is ragged on for now. I just remember seeing dolphins from the balcony early in the morning and kayaking in the Atlantic with my aunt. Good times.
- Destin/Ft. Walton Beach: The best sand of any beach in the US (and I've been to Oahu).
- Orlando: I went to Disney World and Sea World when I was in kindergarten in the 90s. I remember it of course being a magical time for a child but I want to go down there again one day to see the city through adult eyes.
- Panama City: Didn't go to PCB but I'm glad I got to see the area right before Hurricane Michael tore through.
- Tampa: Similar deal to Orlando but I was a little bit older and very much remember Busch Gardens and a pirate ship ride on the Gulf. Also, saw Lilo & Stitch in a theater there when it came out.
- Albany (GA): I didn't particularly stop anywhere in Albany but driving through on the way to Florida, sometimes you can just tell something is in the air. Albany was the most depressing place I've been in so far. Just gave off that vibe.
- Athens (GA): Suburbs are almost stereotypically perfect. The city has the narrowest residential streets I have ever driven on. There were some neighborhoods where I couldn't tell if I was in the ghetto or just a neighborhood of broke college kids. The asian nachos at Taqueria Tsunami are a meal in and of themselves. Love stopping in Athens for food on my way to and back from the mountains. Be careful though. Atlanta is full and once Savannah and its suburbs are full, ya'll are next.
- Atlanta: First of all, love the skyline. I'm a sucker for bright lights and skyscrapers. Friend of mine used to think that Atlanta was just tall buildings and a place people drove through rather than a place people actually lived, lol. I wonder how many wrecks were caused by something shiny. But yeah, the traffic is the 2nd worst I've ever experienced (only DC was worse and I've been to Boston). Plenty of good memories up here. Falcons games; I consider myself fortunate to have seen Tony Gonzalez play live. Also bad memories like getting blown out in a state title game. Regardless, I miss the Georgia Dome. I know this may not be popular to say on here but I enjoyed Stone Mountain for what it was: a day trip and a pretty view at the top. The park goes all out for Christmas. Would bring my own food next time though. Food recommendations: Fogo de Chao (Buckhead and Dunwoody); Fox Bros BBQ. The airport is the best in the United States. I'm impressed at how an airport that big and busy could run so smoothly compared to other airports. Funny airport stories (all of this happened on my way to San Antonio):
- On the shuttle up there, we are 15 minutes away and the older guy sitting on the seat across from me says this to the driver; one grown man to another: "Mr. Driver, can we pull over and go to the bathroom?"
- Driver: "No, we're almost there." Then this guy and the other old dude sitting next to him start talking about how holding it in can lead to increased risk of bladder cancer.
- Almost witnessed a dog fight between two pitbulls and a boxer as the pits were coming off the plane.
- Overheard two employees talking about Louis Farrakhan was visiting in a couple weeks and my mind just started forming the Christmas carol "Farrakhan is Coming to Town."
- Columbus (GA): Big for a Georgia city but just a whole of nothing with the exception of the army base and the Riverwalk area. Ziplining into Alabama over the river was a pleasure. Downtown reminds of Macon's downtown. Unfortunately, I know several smaller places that feel more alive.
- Macon: Underrated downtown. Everything south of that is just scary. Hasn't moved on from the 70s.
- Savannah: Love it everytime I go. Take a ride on the Georgia Queen. Best pecan pie I've ever had was on the riverboat ride. Was surprised to see Dolphins in the river. I'm a sucker for cobblestone streets so of course I enjoyed River Street. Passed by an accapela group singing Royals. The Low Country has the best shrimp n grits.
- Honolulu: Would move there in a heartbeat if it wasn't so expensive and so far away from the mainland US. I did not want to leave. Freshest food I've ever had. Best ice cream I've ever had was at the Dole Pineapple Factory. Did the Pearl Harbor Tour but didn't get to go on the USS Arizona because I believe they were doing some preservation treatment on it. Bluest water I've ever seen was at Hanauma Bay. Waikiki had the best sunsets I've ever seen. I remember quietly crying at the beauty all around me. Incredibly grateful I got to go before COVID. Funny enough, I saw my first organized political protest there. They were protesting the building of new condos for the sake of the employment of hotel workers.
- Boston: Boston traffic was different from what I was expecting. It wasn't that traffic was backed up, it was that it was moving. Gotta be aggressive to merge in and be aggressive with the flow. I have also never seen so many toll roads in my life. There was one literally right outside Logan right before you exit the tunnel. Almost a literal troll under the bridge. At our hotel, the Fire Lane was spelled "Frie Lane." IBut I was up there for a work trip and had to go to a suburb instead. I want to go back to Boston one day and give it a fair chance cause I didn't get to really experience it.
- Minneapolis: Perfect weather in the summer. The Minnesota accent is real. Very kind and polite people. Grateful I got to visit before the George Floyd incident.
- Kansas City: Great BBQ. I didn't get to stay long but it felt like a really big country town.
- Springfield (MO): Worth it for the Bass Pro Shop. Went there when it was the biggest one.
- St. Louis: Definitely has its issues. Most homeless people I've seen so far (haven't been to the West Coast yet). Saw one walking around with his butt hanging and I thought I saw two of them die from overdose two days in a row. St. Louis seemingly handles it homeless population better than other big cities though. You've got your stragglers but I saw most of them were confined to one park across the street from Union Station. Also has the most abandoned and boarded up buildings I've ever seen in a city that big, especially in downtown. The air smelled of cigarettes and weed. All that being said, underrated city. One of my favorite downtowns I've visited in terms of things to do. Had a lot more fun here than in KC. This city has the potential to be great again in the right hands and I pray it happens to ya'll. But seriously, you've gotta get better lights. Darkest interstate I've ever driven on at night, going from downtown to the airport.

2023.06.02 21:32 thankyourob Minnesota $2500 EV (Electric Vehicle) Tax Credit?
Minnesota Legislature passes energy bill with $2,500 EV rebates The Minnesota Legislature passed a lot of bills lately and this one happened to slip through the cracks for me, who just happens to be in the process of buying an EV now. I can't find any further details regarding when this program begins. Some verbiage I saw refers to it as a "tax credit" while another says its a "rebate" that is applied at the time of purchase of the vehicle. $2500 for new/$600 for used EV.
I really dug into this, trying to find some more info since I'm in the process of buying a Chevy Bolt now, and anything to knock that cost down a little sure helps. I did find this on the
Minnesota Legislature website - searching the document for the phrase
Electric Vehicle Rebate I get about 5 hits that refer to tax credit. It might not actually start until 2024, which is unfortunate...although it doesn't
clearly say that. Maybe someone here who understands this political/legal jargon better can decipher what it actually means?

2023.06.02 05:22 Pink_Moon_1 Where to move after college
Me (21) and my boyfriend (23) are looking to move next June right after my graduation. We are thinking about Tennessee (my boyfriend’s top choice), Colorado (my top choice), North Carolina, Oregon or Minnesota.
We will both have remote jobs, so we’re looking for advice on the best and safest areas. I know we gotta compromise to make sure we’re both happy but it’s kind of hard. I like cold weather, he prefers warm weather. We’re both from Illinois, so are our families. My best friend wants to move to Tennessee as well.
Any advice on what to consider when making this big decision? Any advice is appreciated!!
