Looks like most of the nimblewill skipped bleaching and went straight to death given how dry it is?? Some in shaded spots are still white.

Update on tenacity treatment for nimblewill
5/9/23: Tenacity at 4oz/acre and 61% triclopyr at 8oz/acre with noniconic surfactant
5/23/23: Finally some bleaching on nimblewill, sprayed again without triclopyr
6/3/23: Dry for weeks and now also hot. Lawn going dormant and it's only the start of June :'(
Haven't mowed in weeks. Most of the nimblewill never really got bleached. There was spotty whitening. Some areas continue to have some leaves whitening. But some patches are super brown, even moreso than the dormant grass. There are a few small dead spots of grass where I must have overapplied the herbicide. (Hard for me to spray the whole yard evenly with a backpack sprayer.)
I wouldn't dream of doing a third application of tenacity given the state of things. Will have to reassess in the fall or maybe even next spring. I may try hand pulling haha. Hopefully the number of nimblewill spots is down to a manageable number that I could mark with a flag and spot spray. There were at least 100 spots before, which lead me to spraying the whole yard.

So a bit of introduction, I'm a 22 yo computer science student, i also work part time. Overall for past few months an average weeks is 20h of work, 20h of just attending classes, about 8-12 hours of assignments and studying for exams + few hours of commute. I just don't have much of a free time and when i do i enjoy spending it drawing, playing video games or just having a good sleep at the weekends.
I understand that I'm really lucky to have grandparents at my age who are actually in a good shape and with no serious illnesses.
However it really makes me angry af, when i plan my weekend so that i wake up play some games and then prepare to study, i sometimes help my parent too like with mowing the lawn or something. Today during dinner they said that we have to go visit grandparents because it's my grandfather birthday. On Monday i have my first exam and i kind of wanted to study. My parents always say we'll just be there for an hour or two and it always ends up being an 5-6h long visit during which they always shout at each other and drink too much (or almost too much). It's not like i dont want to visit them because whenever i have time and my grandfather needs some help with paperwork i always try to help him and i visit them quite frequently.
I just hate that my parents always demand being super enthusiastic about it. They always say that these few hours won't make any difference to me but they do, its basically few hours during which i could study and then rest. So now I have to study, then visit them and just sit for 5hs and then study again. Unfortunately I'm not a robot... I have a 21 inch 36V Makita mower (XML09).
I am not happy with the cut quality. It leave stray blades standing (and yes I overlap my passes). Also, if any clump fall to the ground there is no vacuum lift action so they stay there. You can mow over even a small clump multiple times and the mower ignores it.
Then I discovered the makita 191W87-2 high lift blade. I think this is what I am looking for. It says it creates more lift and thus is better for tall grass, wet grass, etc. They don't say it, but I assume they don't put it on stock because it must shorten battery life. Battery life is not an issue for me. I can mow my entire lawn on just 2 batteries, so if the suction blade means I need to switch to the second pair so be it.
Anyone have experience with this blade?

I am not happy with the cut quality. It leave stray blades standing (and yes I overlap my passes). Also, if any clump fall to the ground there is no vacuum lift action so they stay there. You can mow over even a small clump multiple times and the mower ignores it.
Then I discovered the makita 191W87-2 high lift blade. I think this is what I am looking for. It says it creates more lift and thus is better for tall grass, wet grass, etc. They don't say it, but I assume they don't put it on stock because it must shorten battery life. Battery life is not an issue for me. I can mow my entire lawn on just 2 batteries, so if the suction blade means I need to switch to the second pair so be it.
Anyone have experience with this blade?

This is the attitude fueling the shift to the right "all this liberal 'science' bullshit has turned my country into a place i dont recognize. Time to get my country in order!", but like how the long term side effects of COVID will be blamed on the vaccine rather than the virus, humans are apparently hardwired to look for a person or institution that's responsible for their problems, because they live in a world that's manifestly run by humanity. Politicians don't help with this because they promise change that a large bureaucracy isn't capable of... every time they step in front of a mic. Politicians feed the sense that the world is divided into teams and the team that's running things is doing harm. They are the anti-vax evangelists of a world simply running out of good time as a result of spending all the good time since the end of WWII.
Humanity cannot fly. That shouldn't be arguable. It's a fundamental limit of our physiology that cannot be overcome without shedding everything about us that makes us human; brains are heavy. When we get on a plane, we are not 'flying', we are taking a bus full of people, strapping a rocket engine to it, and firing it in a ballistic trajectory toward our destination. For all the celebration of progress in the tech age, we still can't figure out how to move something forward without throwing something out the back. That's not just why planes are absurd but why they cannot continue to be considered a good invention. Think of how much fuel would need to be burned to rocket yourself across a lawn, let alone through the sky; it's an insane amount of fuel and an absurd justification for burning it, especially virtually all domestic travel can be accomplished by rail or bus... which also use the same principle of throwing out enough exhaust gasses out the back to displace the weight of the thing that's burning the fuel. When this thing is on the ground, it burns much less fuel than pushing it through the sky.
Humanity assumes novelty is benign. Im not sure if this is one of the hidden rules about capitalism that we all follow as a culture "have you seen the new x!? It's amazing and works way better than x-1!", or if we're evolutionarily programmed to assume new is good and the direction we should be heading in. In either case, it has allowed us to adopt planetary destruction as a necessary aspect of each of our lives. It isn't anything we do consciously, it is the background of our lives that feeds big industry and steals time from the future. It's our commute, our food, our total acceptance that running a furnace is fine despite getting all worked up about oil spills and fires when we see them uncontained. The maze we all run was designed to have as much distance as possible between you and the cheese at the end so you would spend half or more of your cheese burning calories to get from the start to the finish and repeat all over. It is why people feel the problem is too big for them: there is nothing one person can change in the part of the life they control that will redirect the planetary system away from collapse because it is the pattern of our lives that is the destructive part.
Since our shared pattern is so destructive, it is self limiting. We are feeling the effects of that now with COVID (forests being pushed toward ecological breakdown leads animals to look for new territory and new food, leading to conflict with species already there and malnutrition from food with an incomplete nutrient balance), extreme weather doing damage to vital infrastructure and shipping losses.
Which brings us back to Ukraine. The world needs a beacon. A Western country with the courage to model a sustainable lifestyle through active change. I assumed that would have been Canada but I was wrong. Instead, with Ukraine being forced to rebuild in a time where supplies have never been more expensive, and in a state where its people have gotten used to living without luxury, it can either be an incubator for redesigning human life to restore the environment rather than destroy it.
There is no stronger people to take on such a challenge and the world that has been paying for weapons to defend. If we can send explosives to break, we must send hands, tools, and materials to rebuild. If we rebuild the same way, the world will fall into war since the causal push of all existing conflict is space and resources or their control, and we will continue to pretend that individual human choices are to blame for war. We will continue to refuse to look deeper and will soon find ourselves in a position where taking up arms seems like the only solution left to us. If, on the other hand, the rest of us find the courage to look one step deeper and ask "why is the world falling to war? What is driving conflict?", we will see it is the same thing driving our thirst for more luxury and, hopefully, realize that the only survivable path to the future is one where we change our behavior to relieve the force that's pushing us in that direction.
When more is never enough, less is a horrifying concept. Without a model for how to happily live as a human in a self sufficient community, there will be no "green transition", there will only be more disease, more scarcity, and more conflict on the edge of that scarcity. The more each of us takes, the more we contribute to conflict around the world.
There is no way to make a car "green", just like there is no way to make a compostable battery. The problem isnt the means of conveyance, it is the distance we need to cover to survive. Whether or not we change our habits to adapt to this reality is inconsequential to its eventuality, it just seems absurd to ignore the reality of hardship until you're being strangled by it simply to "enjoy the time you have left".
If the war in Ukraine ends and the world moves in to turn it into the first net zero country, there is hope for a future for our species. If we act like everything was fine until a mad man decided to invade a sovereign country, war will spread like a fog descending on the world. Demands will be met by force as a result of people pushing for impossibly cheap access to resources. Slavery will return as the foundation of the global economy and, in all this horror, we will be hastening and worsening our own conditions.
Like a train whose tracks go over the grand canyon, humanity needs one last train stop to see what it looks like to live somewhere other than a train at constantly increasing speed. We need a model for a future that is too nebulous to explain: it must be seen and experienced, how much living can be done as humans on and with the land. If nothing else but to illustrate that a train going over a cliff was not a predetermined consequence of "human progress", and that a choice has been made to define that progress with the inventions of a few men, all of which run by stealing energy from the past and stability from the future. It would allow us to see the train from the outside and force us to question the value of a murder-suicide pact.
For the demonstration to be compelling, there can be no or very little carbon footprint for the country. Structures must be built from salvaged (cheap) material, focusing on isolated but functional communities.
We have already lost the battle to save most of what we recognize in our world but we don't need to continue to burn it all down. Since there is no more track for this paradigm, there is no consequence for trying something new and certain death and misery by doing the same. This message can be shared in every possible way, but without a demonstration of what it looks like on a cultural level, we will never have the discussion that leads to the choice to keep going or get off the death train.
We are not the creations or technology we obsess over, we are an ape descended species on a planet we're stuck with and have killed 80% of in 50 years. We cannot survive on a lifeless world because we are alive and life feeds on life to survive. I have a hard time getting people to relate to the rest of the living world as a branch of the same tree we belong to because of how separated we are from other life. The more life that's lost, the less we'll care about it being gone and the more committed we will be to our preoccupations to avoid having to face reality.
The cowardice ive encountered when it comes to facing reality has been incredibly disappointing and disturbing. We will pass laws in our country to prevent poaching and hunting in other countries where our emissions and lifestyle -guided by our laws- are pushing the same animals to total extinction. We will talk about this from a position of moral superiority, only, and will take no responsibility for the conditions our behavior has already created. There is no "border crisis", there are people being pushed out of their homes by new weather that has made those homes incompatible with survival. I've heard lots of Americans talking about moving north in response to climate shifts as if that is something completely different from what is happening on their southern border or in Europe. No one leaves their ancestral home to cause problems in another country, but if that country is responsible for the force that pushed them out, they should either stop pushing people out of their homes or open their borders. To refuse either is to accept that you live a life of evil and as the person that will one day deny you shelter to protect what they have.
These a new times with new stakes and new bad guys. The only good thing about being the bad guy is you can choose to stop, while your victims can only beg you to stop and, eventually, resist/insist on a different course. It is up to each and all of us how the future plays out. The party is over. No one gets to sit this out.

- all of his toys are in the basket that he has constant access to. They are not scattered all over the floor. This is obviously my fault because I should've realized that he had them organized how he likes it. I am terrible.
- I didn't let him join me in the bathroom. This is clearly wrong of me to do, as I get to see him poop so why isn't he allowed to watch me poop? The risk of him eating the shower curtain every time I open the door is irrelevant.
- breakfast took longer than usual because I wanted to chop up some carrots as a topper. I am obviously abusing him, as he could've starved to death in the 2 minutes it took me to chop.
- I tripped on him when I was bringing in groceries. This is definitely my fault here, I should've known he was making sure my feet were positioned correctly with each step I took. He was testing my balance and agility and I failed.
- I didn't bring him with me to a doctor's appointment. Obvious neglect.
- I greeted the cat before I greeted him. It is clear to me now that I am playing favorites and that is not okay. I will be sure to never touch the cat again going forward.
- I clipped his nails yesterday. The wails of pain clearly indicate that I missed his nails and was instead cutting off his toes one at a time. Although there was no bleeding, it was implied.
- I refused to let him eat cat poop. This is clearly a good source of nutrition for him. He is malnourished and unloved.
- I did not allow him to greet literally every person on our walk. I am obviously neglecting his socialization by not letting him run across the street to play with the neighbor who was mowing the lawn.
- I ran out of beef broth for his dinner and had to mix hot water and salmon oil into his food instead. I should've realized by denying his access to the nectar of the gods is a clear sign that I should allow him to call PETA. He refused to eat dinner, which he should. I am a terrible pet parent.

The county health department (very small county) reached out with an electric wheelchair for him to use until the “local” (2.5 hours away) ALS group could help us get an electric wheelchair. This made my dad able to get around still for the months it took to get a specialty order one.
Many MANY people in my small town bring my mom home cooked meals for her and my dad, so when she gets home from work she doesn’t have to cook. I’d say when I visit, there are at least three meals in her fridge from others.
Some of my family members (uncles, aunts, cousins) will go to my parents 10 acre property and mow their lawn so my mom can relax on the weekends.
And this one is the one that makes me tear up sometimes: There’s a guy who lives about 30 min away (still country land) who has a motorized wheelchair accessible van with a ramp that he had when his son was still alive who had cerebral palsy. When his son passed, this amazing human being kept his van, and lends it out to people FOR FREE to use. We only have to pay for gas and general up-keeping (oil changes, tire rotation, etc). He just… let’s people use it until they don’t need it anymore. Then he takes it back, checks it all over, and then waits for the next person who needs it.
Just a reminder to everyone that there are good people in the world, who help us through this horrible, awful times.

I have everything I’ve ever wanted. A husband. A dog. Two kids. A nice house. Well paying job. I hate all of it. I didn’t meet my husband until my early 30s, didn’t have kids until I was 37 and 40. So before that, I thought I wanted all of this. But, I can’t stand my life. I carry the entire mental load of the household. I plan all the activities, keep the calendar, remember to buy toilet paper, clean up EVERYTHING, grocery shop and pay for 90% of it all. My husband mows the lawn and changes the car oil.
My older child is kind and respectful, but he needs a lot of shepherding. My younger son is insane. He challenges everything, destroys things and is mean to everyone. I’m exhausted from both of them.
My husband is completely oblivious to everything. Never cleans. And when I say never, I mean never. If there is a spilled glass of water, it sits there. Dirty dishes don’t faze him. I could leave the bathroom for weeks and he wouldn’t care. He has never once done a load of our kids’ laundry. He has used the vacuum once before someone was coming over. That’s it. He recently decided it was a good idea to flip a house, so for the last few months he has been gone every weekend. Which means I have no time to myself. None. I can’t shop for myself other than online. I haven’t been able to get a pedicure since last November. That may sound petty, but….it’s the one thing I love. I’ve already changed my hair appointments to during the week and take time off work. I feel like I can’t be gone for two hours on a Saturday.
This morning as he headed out the door for his day at the flip, I imagined myself leaving. Forever. I looked up flights. I have a cousin in Los Angeles. I could stay with him for a while. I can’t stand this anymore. I can’t stand these kids, my husband or the burden of running this house.

 | About a year after putting sod in, picture from this morning. submitted by lawncare_throwaway to lawncare [link] [comments] We put about 40 extra yards of dirt back here — mostly to level out and regrade the ground. It seems like a lot, but you can barely tell. If you live in an area where new housing is going in (and they have basements), you can source excavation dirt for cheap. Just get pictures before hand so you know what you’re getting. My wife and I did all the irrigation. It was very validating to see the coverage after all the trenching and piping. I don’t have a ton of water service, so there’s 4-5 zones just for grass, with 3-4 future zones planned for flower beds. On sod day, we laid all the sod with some help from parents — about 4500sqft. I’ve put down some grubex and will lay some fertilizer in the fall, but have otherwise not done too much. I got a much larger broadcast spreader to make the job a bit easier. As you can see, I still have many projects to complete (see mounds, wall, shed, etc), but it’s coming along. I chose the center honey locust for the more diffuse shade it would cast on the lawn. Colorado has been getting lots of rain this year, which has been great for the lawn and new trees as well. |

I kid you not, this man completely seriously said "If the man of the house has a power drill, he could drill a bigger hole in the cabinet to switch the water line size."
I just looked up at him and said "I own a power drill." I was so flabbergasted I couldn't even comprehend how to correct his sexist crap. He would probably have a heart attack if he knew I'm the one who mows the lawn and the one who does the grilling too.
What would you have done?

I recently had to sign a 12 month lease in my townhouse I have lived in for 5 years due to the original owner selling to an investment group. There is nothing in my lease saying I am responsible for lawn care. It is 3 buildings with 4 units each and a shared yard. There is no privacy fence or anything breaking up the yard. So my grass is getting bad and I noticed the other two units are mowed. I was told we are responsible for it but I can’t find anything in my lease stating this. I wouldn’t have signed without inquiring if so. I have no room or money to buy a lawnmower and how can they make us responsible with multiple tenets? I am in Ohio

I was desperate one day to get the yard mowed before I got fined by the city. None of my many yard mowers would work - string was broke in one, maybe water in the gas in the other two? At the time my husband travelled all the time, this was before Covid.
I put an ad on Craigslist for someone who could mow my lawn for $35. I felt that was reasonable and really as much as I could pay. The fancy places I was looking at were so much more.
A guy said yes and came out and mowed the lawn. Since I could afford it and it lifted so much burden off me I asked if he could do it weekly. He said yes.
During the years he has gotten another person to help and has upgraded his equipment. In all these years he has never once mentioned the thought of a price increase. He has really grown his business and I’m so proud of him. He is also awesome for keeping our price so low!
Just feels good.
