Chapter 29: Knowing a Good Deal When You Hear One
The days that followed the party were a bit of a blur to Andy. The ‘work’ seemed barely worth it to him, but the Vaidas and several of their Team Leads swore up and down that his services and knowledge were invaluable. The first few days had been spent crawling through their Terraria labs and all over the Oppression Palace finding and removing all the noxious weeds he could think of and identify. Mostly it amounted to the satisfying task of hacking away Himalayan Blackberry thickets with machetes and ‘sanitizing’ them with a special kind of flamethrower. It was cathartic work, broken up only by the strange sensation of having to teach little ‘classes’ about how to identify them out in the wild.
Puck was fast becoming a beloved mascot with all the field teams and scientists, and Andy suspected they’d been sneaking him treats behind his back. Andy knew Puck was getting extra food from somewhere with all the weight he was putting on, and he had no short list of suspects with the way Puck was always reluctant to leave the Commissary.
Andy hadn’t seen much of Narny or Sitry outside of meals in the Commissary, given their schedules being so different. Naranjo was busy helping his father in the Climatology Labs, while Sitry was busy shadowing her Kho-mother Sakalbi out in the Pacific, taking water samples and measuring oxygen levels in the open water west of Vancouver Island. Kalai had disappeared, and from the grumbling of Sitry and Naranjo, she was out on vacation with her father. That fact was confirmed when Kalai had started sending pictures and writing honest to goodness email letters to him. They’d spent a few days sailing from New Bedford to Nantucket, and Dr. He’osforos had taken both of them tuna fishing. The last couple days they’d spent snorkeling out at the Great Barrier Reef. She talked of all the sea creatures she’d encountered, and there had been a delivery a few days after that of fresh tuna, and Andy had happily turned that into steaks, sandwiches, salads, even sushi rolls when he’d looked up a recipe. They were a huge hit with the Vaidas when he’d been able to share them, and it wasn’t long before Maestro Pae’ella had put in a formal request for Andy to spend some time in his kitchen for ‘a cultural exchange of culinary traditions’.
‘Culture’ and ‘tradition’ seemed to be the new buzzwords in the Warren, and outreach programs were already in development to engage with ‘indigenous’ peoples around the world. Andy pointed them in the direction of other nations and peoples they could work with, and entire teams had been formed preparing for ‘introductions’. From what Andy’d heard, the initial outreach to the Catalans and the Basques in France and Spain had gone well, and the team that had made an outreach to the Ket peoples of Siberia were reporting successes.
“I’m not sure about some of these peoples in the Amazon… but the Maori and the Mayans have always been good friends and allies to us. You’ll also probably have good luck with the Sami in the northern part of Sweden, Norway, and Finland. They used to be regular visitors to some of the big international gatherings, according to Grandma.” It was a bit surreal, looking up at a map of the world with colored lights indicating field teams that were either in the process of or planning to make contact with known indigenous groups that they’d identified.
“Almost two hundred and thirty seven positive interactions across four continents so far. The only thing hampering us is the bottleneck on field teams!” Aftasia was ecstatic about the progress they were starting to make, and new data was starting to pour in from all over.
The real coup was the Ojibwe Elder who had been a professor at the University of Minnesota. Through her, they’d been starting to make contact with other out-of-work professors, indigenous and non-native, and the Vaidas were on a virtual hiring spree.
“What I don’t understand is, why didn’t you all talk to the Universities first? I’d assumed you’d have done that the moment the majority of the gunfire stopped.”
“In hindsight, it was pretty stupid, but much of the data collected by your climate scientists that we were able to look at prior to the invasion was either incomplete, lacked historical context, or was flat out falsified. The sheer amount of conflicting data analysis and inconsistencies in the collection and reporting process didn’t exactly engender a great deal of confidence in your climate sciences.” Aftasia gave Andy a sheepish look as the main monitor of the control center switched views. The control center was far busier these days than it had been since the atmospheric scrubbers had been installed, and Aftasia led Andy back to her office overlooking the whole room so they could continue their conversation without having to raise their voices over the din.
“Of course, after we’d landed, our military and several corporate interests had raided anything deemed ‘of value’ and took people and data troves Empress alone knows where. By the time we were getting started on ecological restoration, there wasn’t much of anything that was usable. Academics for the most part wouldn’t speak to us.” Aftasia offered Andy a cup of coffee. It had been a gift from one of their teams working in Cuba and everyone in the Warren had learned the hard way that a small amount of Cuban coffee went a long way. “But that’s all changing thanks to you!” Her smile was bright and genuine, but Andy felt a pang of anxiousness when she did.
Andy shifted a bit nervously, as Aftasia pulled her omnipad out and opened the map again. “We’re also looking into making contact with several of the tribes and peoples in Africa and Southern Asia as well. Would you be able to help us there?”
“I’d be as lost and as foreign as you with their protocols and traditions… but if you can make inroads with the people who’ve been living in their home with their traditions still intact like you have, you’ll be able to restore their home to the way it’s supposed to be.” Andy shrugged, which caused Aftasia to adopt a muted version of her daughter’s pout. It still didn’t seem to register, sometimes, that Andy didn’t know all the tribal peoples around the globe. He’d noticed that if he didn’t remind them, they’d unintentionally start treating him like a Pan-Indian expert on all things indigenous; no matter where that particular type of
indigenous was located.
“You’re right, of course. Oh, I missed yesterday’s briefing. How’s our tower ecosystem looking these days?”
Andy thought about it for a minute before answering. “It’s coming along. We’ve ripped up most of the invasives I could find, so now it’s just down to maintenance and seeing if anything went to seed. We’ve also removed most of the gray squirrels, but there’s this one little clever bast… uh, what I mean to say is…
smart little rodent that keeps evading the capture teams on level twenty nine. Other than that, the feeder installation for the hummingbirds and the tree trimming for the Balds and the Goldens is coming along nicely. We should be done right when the autumn rains really get going.”
“Good, good! So I think today is the day when we stock the first of the Hwatcom Hatcheries from our clone stock. I know today is normally your day to run the Invasives Identification course, but since all our field teams are deployed around the globe, could I ask you to be the liaison between our crews and your people again?”
Andy gave a half laugh and a nod. When he wasn’t crawling around the giant labs and the tower’s self-contained forests, or talking to thankfully small groups of Erbians, Rakiri, and Shil’vati, Andy was out at the Hwatcom Reservation. Officially he was there as a liaison, but the reality was for him to sit to the side, bored out of his skull while the actual engineers and experts did the work of bringing the Fishery back to life.
There was one perk though. He’d gotten the message on his old email account from Willy about a
race, and he wanted to know when he’d be available for
practice. Andy knew he’d have little trouble slipping away from the jobsite to meet up with Tribe’s Warchief.
“Yeah, I’ll hitch a ride on one of the shuttles, when’s the next one leaving?”
--------------------
Andy walked up the little deer path into the woods and away from the Hatchery he was supposedly overseeing. He’d told the Rakiri Forewoman that he was going to stretch his legs and he’d be on his omnipad if they needed him. She understood, and told him to have a nice walk.
The war meeting was being held in one of the ancient village sites that had been swallowed by the forest gone wild. As Andy reached the little clearing, he saw several people, mostly his age, sitting around a flat, open piece of ground where one of their Longhouses used to stand. Andy could see the old corner-post logs still upright and charred from where they’d been burned during the Shil’vati invasion.
Uncle Willy looked up from where he leaned against an old cedar tree as Andy approached. “Ah, good, the Sheloksets are here, now we can begin." The old man had ditched his walker and he motioned for Andy to take a seat next to Chuck.
“So the purp lover got permission to take a break at last. What’s it like getting paid to sell out your soul?”
Andy looked over at the speaker. He wore dirty jeans and an old faded gray sweatshirt, giving nothing away about his Clan or Band. Andy didn’t recognize him at all.
Must be one of those northern or eastern Salishians from over the mountains.
“I sleep
well on a bed made of money, cuz. Enough to buy back what you couldn’t
take back, *
s’tuduk*!” Andy spat back and glared down at the man. He was Andy’s size, and if he was anything like the rest that Uncle Willy had gathered, an experienced and formidable fighter.
The man jumped up and looked ready to charge, but a growl from Willy stopped him cold. “Enough, save the insults for the enemy. We have the
work of the people to do now.” Andy had been chomping at the bit for some stress relief. The drinking and the smoking could only do so much, and playing the part of the gentle giant around the hwun’eetums had meant that he could find no real outlet these days. Willy motioned for Andy to take a seat next to Chuck.
“The fuck’s wrong with you? Do you know who that is?” Chuck whispered in his ear as Andy stared the man down. Andy could tell he was being sized up, and in his head he knew there was going to be a fight today.
“Do I look like I give a shit?” Andy murmured back, appraising the man and trying to gauge what he could and couldn’t get away with.
Andy heard Chuck heave a sigh, “Your funeral, cuz, you didn’t have to call him that.”
Andy looked around at the gathering of young men and women that surrounded him. He knew most of them, and he was on mostly good terms with everyone. There were representatives from fourteen different Clans there, and though they were a minority, he was relieved to see that he wasn’t the only tumulh in attendance. One of his friends that had survived the residential school with him, Dean-oh, was there and so were his three cousins. All of them were tumulhs like he was. The throng of about thirty stilled to silence as Willy walked into the center.
“We got word through the grapevine: Scarface is on the warpath again. She and her militia goons are gearing up for a major raid against Quil Ceda, Red Wind, Skagit, Silver Reef, Clearwater, Emerald Queen, and Muckleshoot. In total, all seven of the southern casino caches, and they’re going to be hitting us in five days.” Andy and Chuck flashed each other a quick look but stayed silent. If Scarface was coming for all seven, then this was going to be an ‘All Hands On Deck’ knock-down-drag-out with the purps.
“How much of the Council’s assets are there?” Dean-oh’s voice broke the pregnant pause and everyone, including Willy, stared.
Before Willy could speak, the filthy unknown spoke again. “Should we even be talking about it with the purp lover here?”
“Talk shit again, and see what happens,” Andy growled and leaned forward, ready to engage. That beast that lay inside him started to stir, and Andy could feel all the small and large stressors in his life pour into it, feeding it and making it stronger than ever.
Yup, gonna get in a fight today! “Enough!” Uncle Willy’s words were directed at the both of them, but his steel gaze wasn’t directed at Andy. He felt a hand on his shoulder as Chuck held onto him, trying to pull him back. “About a third, along with several ancient masks and other artifacts that the Shil claim belong to them as prizes of war,” Willy continued after the two of them had complied and stood down.
The story of the last great raid of the Salish and their victory against the Shil’vati Imperium came back to him. Just after Grandpa split the Tribe, and Uncle Willy was selected as Warchief, the Shil’vati had been on a tear, removing all the humans in the area and looting everything they could get their hands on. Salishian Art Collections, especially those that had been on loan or were under litigation in the archives and galleries of the White Universities and Museums were being systematically robbed. They’d even ransacked the masks, blankets, and artifacts from the homes and smokehouses of the- then empty- Reservations.
Uncle Willy had planned and led his first official raid as Warchief to recover the Tribe’s artifacts, masks, artwork, and carvings from the depots where the conquerors were gathering them up. It had been one of the few joint raids with the Exiles. Grandpa Wiley and Uncle Willy had coordinated an attack that hadn’t even touched off the hwun’eetum’s alarms. By the time they realized their loot had been taken back, the heritage of the Tribe and a massive stockpile of wealth the Shil had seized was hidden away in safe storages for the day the Tribe would be able to return.
In the beginning, it had been the Exiles that had maintained the only Tribal presence in the ancestral homelands, and they had made the purps pay in blood for every indignity they’d suffered. Andy was proud of the fact that the whole reason the Imperials had seemingly stationed so many regiments along the west coast was directly because of the damage Grandpa Wiley and his Exiles had caused.
“So we’re moving ‘em north. We’ll be calling in the Exiles to kick in too, and that’s where you two come in.” Andy gave a start as Uncle Willy turned and looked dead at Andy and Chuck. “You and Charles’ll put the Exiles to work on the diversion while we move our gear out.”
There was murmuring from the crowd at that pronouncement. Andy held Uncle Willy’s gaze, unfazed by the assignment. The others might have feared to be associated with Exiles, but Andy and Chuck had participated in
and led enough raids with them that the threat of being cut off and lumped in with them was passé. The effect of their assignment on the others, however, was immediate. The fearful stares and sudden tenseness around the gathering was so thick you could cut it with a knife.
“You will inform the Exiles that they’re to hit the Militia supply depot outside North Bend and Tanner where we know the purps are gathering the supplies for this raid and others. Remember the proscriptions when dealing with the Exiles. You can fight alongside, but you cannot assist or render aid, unless you want to join them permanently.” Willy’s warning was one Andy had heard before, and had at times ignored when out on a raid.
To hell with that, they’re still our family and I won’t leave ANYONE to our enemies, regardless of status. Andy looked over at Chuck and they shared a look that conveyed their mutual feelings on the matter. “We got this, Unck. Point ‘em at the enemy and cut ‘em loose,” Chuck spoke while Andy nodded.
Willy nodded appreciatively, “Steal whatever isn’t nailed down, destroy the rest. Once you’ve kicked the hornet’s nest, fall back to the foothills moving towards Lake Kanim. Anticipate you’ll be pursued with drones and hunting reex, so pull them along the old Bessemer logging road where the Resistance will be waiting to take care of any of those pesky little problems.”
“We’re working with the whites now? When did that happen?” Chuck chimed in.
“On my authority, and only when we need a patsy,” Willy replied before continuing. “We want their fingerprints on this, not ours. You’ll link with the Resistance, who’ll get you over the mountains and into Chelan. Let them spray their tags and throw a few rounds at your pursuers so they feel like they helped.” Willy took a breath and tilted his head a bit as he regarded Andy. “That fancy new lightbox of yours. Does it have a number?”
Without waiting for Andy to respond, he continued. “Give me a call on my cell and wait for contact information from our new buddies.” Andy nodded and pulled his omnipad out and dialed Willy’s number before quickly hanging up.
“You’ll give them half the take for safe passage and break up there. Head to the Kootenai Band to the east or the Upper River Halkumenum in the north. They’ll give you your alibis and move you back home safe. Go war masked, to stop any positive identification. Do you have any questions?”
Andy thought for a moment, and looked over at Chuck. He was thankful that Chuck was on assignment with him, because it meant that he wouldn’t be in charge. A sense of relief washed over him the more he thought about it.
Hell, Chuck could probably handle the real planning. All I’ll have to do is be a Witness and a backup. “How much of the Tribe’s arsenal do we have access to?” Chuck’s question brought Andy back to the present.
“None; the Exiles supply their own,” Willy answered in a serious tone before moving to stand over Andy. Andy looked up and a sudden wave of apprehension fell over him. “Neph, given the circumstances, normally I’d tell you to wait at the Rendezvous point with the hwun’eetum but…” Andy looked up, and a pit of anger and fear grew into a solid leaden weight in his chest. Willy looked over at the man on the other side of the circle that had spoken earlier before looking back at Andy, “But there’s quite a few folks who would like to see you prove you remember which side you’re on. You’ll go in with Chuck as your battle buddy and you keep the Exiles in line. Witness any that fall, and keep the whites from turning on us out there.”
Andy had a sudden sense of foreboding, and he felt his heart start to race. He focused for a moment on controlling his breathing to try and calm himself down.
“Charles, I know you’re the Stommish, but Andy has more experience leading these attacks than you do. Andy, you’ll be in charge.” Willy’s words crashed down on Andy’s soul and he felt the whole world tumble out from under him. Although it was a breach of protocol, Willy wasn’t exactly wrong. Andy had led his fair share of raids in the last six years, but they’d all been hit and runs. Lob a few molotovs and set an ambush for Wendigos or snooping marines here and there, or break into the Cambrian supply depots for food, weapons, medicine, and ammunition. Andy had been on point for those little jaunts not because he was better qualified, but because he’d had the right last name and Clan affiliation. Willy had said as much the first time he’d sent twelve year old Andy out to a protest with a bottle full of homemade naphtha and a lighter.
“You are a Shelokset. Your lineage is one of warriors and leaders. Your family blazed a path into battle for the rest of our people to follow… And you? You survived the hwun’eetums trying to break you. Show us the way, Ts’uti’tsi’uqw. Take back your voice and your spirit from the colonizers!” Willy’s words and a nudge from Chuck brought Andy back to the present again where the Elder was hovering over him. Willy put a steadying hand on Andy’s shoulder and the two locked eyes for a moment. That steel gaze transfixed him, and there was no give in the order or its intent. “The plan is yours, Shelokset, and you are permitted to speak and meet with the Exiles… by Council dispensation.”
Andy’s roiling emotions took a back seat as the analytical part of his mind began to take over.
Just get through this. Plan it well and no one needs to die. The permission to openly meet with the Exiles was novel. Normally Andy would have to sneak off and meet with Jackie and her goons on the sly to make sure their raids were planned properly and to get good recon on a target so it could be hit without turning into a firefight. Andy looked about the gathering at the stoney faces surrounding him before he looked back at Willy. In a moment of sudden clarity, it struck Andy as to
why Uncle Willy was breaking protocol. “So this comes from Grandma?”
Willy nodded gravely, “You should go visit with her. She and the rest of the Council are
worried about you… best not leave that off too much longer.” Willy’s implication stung. Andy knew what he was doing, and even though he’d not had Grandma’s or the Council’s permission to work with the Vaidas, it was all working out in their favor.
How can they doubt me when we have land and money coming back to the people? “If you get your hands dirty out there, so much the better.” Andy’s heart stilled at those words.
That’s the price of acceptance. They want me to kill someone to prove I’m still a Salishian. Andy’s jaw tightened enough that he could have crushed diamonds in his teeth. He glared up at the Elder with open hatred. “I’ve never had a problem getting my hands dirty, Uncle Willy; you of all people know that to be true. I am a Shelokset and a Bear… The Tribe always comes first,
always.” Andy felt insulted to his very core, and cold fury bubbled up in his soul.
“If he remembers which side he’s fighting for, there shouldn’t be any problems.” The silence was broken by the man who’d antagonized him before. Though he spoke to his buddy next to him, the words were loud enough that he meant them to be heard.
Andy rocketed up to his feet, no longer willing or able to contain himself. “Ok, motherfucker, you got something to say, say it like a fucking man to my fucking face!” Willy backed away and made a motion for everyone else to stay out of it. The other man rose evenly to his feet and smiled.
“Fuck you, you colonized fucking Fort Indian!” The man began walking in a circle in an easy and relaxed way. Even his words were relaxed. Andy could see through his ploy in an instant.
He wants me mad and blind. Fucking amature hour. Andy’s body switched to fight mode and suddenly everything in his mind went clear. His heart rate slowed and the cobwebs of doubt and fear fell away. “Let’s go! Right here, right now, crab-bait!” Andy played his emotions up. Let the moron think he had the upper hand.
Andy put his fists up into a guard, and the man did the same. He bounced and danced his feet back and forth like he knew martial arts. “Just so you know, Fort, my name is-”
Andy launched himself with blinding speed forward and sent a vicious kick into the idiot’s front knee. Andy felt the joint give at the surprise attack just as he was about to monologue and followed him to the ground, unleashing all his pent up frustration and anxiety on the bastard. Andy let loose a feral howl of rage as he felt two sets of arms arrest his own and drag him up and off.
“Meat! Your name is Dead Meat, dumbass!” Andy howled at the man on the ground, who was being helped up by his friends. Chuck and Uncle Willy held Andy fast as Andy struggled against them to re-engage. He looked down at Willy and at Chuck, “Let me go, let me the fuck go-”
Stars blossomed and his vision swirled. Andy’s head snapped back at the punch that hit him in the temple, followed by what felt like a sledgehammer blow to the chest that sent him tumbling backwards out of Chuck and Willy’s grip and onto the ground. Instinct caused Andy to lash out with a foot as he hit the ground and he felt it connect with something soft on somebody.
Andy rose back up to his feet just in time to catch a roundhouse punch to the ear. Andy leaned away and threw an uppercut that connected with his assailant’s jaw. It bought him enough time to regain his senses and take stock of his opponent. He was serious now, no more being relaxed, and no more quippy shit. This was a fight now, and the two of them circled, looking for an opening.
Andy feinted, drawing a flinch and Andy closed in. The two were toe-to-toe as they hammered away at each other. Andy acted on instinct and training as he attacked and defended as best he could, but his opponent was stronger and faster than he was. With every passing blow, Andy felt his strength sap and the pain threaten to overwhelm him. Just as he was about to break, a hand grabbed him by the collar and pushed him back. Through the blurry vision he could make out the shape of Uncle Willy, standing firm between the two of them and holding them both firm at arm’s length.
“Alright. You both have had enough and I can’t have my two best fighters injuring themselves!” The roar from Willy froze the pair of them, and Andy was able to get a look at his opponent. One of his eyes was swollen shut, and his entire front was stained in blood from his nose and mouth. He held his side and was leaning to the left as Willy held him up and back. Andy slowly became aware of a stinging feeling and the taste of copper in his mouth as the adrenaline from the fight wore off. He brought his hand up and checked his teeth to make sure they were all there. One of his molars felt loose, but otherwise they were all present. His nose was clogged and his chest and stomach ached but nothing felt broken.
“Now shake hands, damnit, or I’ll dump the both of you in a crab-pot and cut the buoy.” Willy shook them once and dragged them back together. Andy felt like he should apologize, but pride kept him from opening his mouth to make the first gesture. The two of them glared at each other through bleary eyes before Andy’s opponent thrust his hand out. Andy took it and masked a grimace as the bastard clenched his grip before yanking his hand back.
Andy only moved to return to his seat with Chuck after the other guy had returned to his own seat.
Uncle Willy continued with the plan to move their goods out of the casinos, but because it didn’t concern him, Andy let his attention wander as he took stock of his new collections of cuts, bruises, sores, and aches.
“Damn, Andy, when you make enemies, you sure don’t fuck around,” Chuck whispered in his ear which had only just stopped ringing.
Andy gave Chuck a side-eye. “The fuck’s that mean?”
“That’s fucking Dave Skwemai. Councilwoman Roselyn’s son, you mean-tempered jackass!”
“Well fuck him twice over then. It’s their family that fucked the tribe over, and calling me a fucking ‘purp lover’ is rich when his mother took it up the ass for Ta’naios and exiled the best of us in the first place.” Andy looked back over at Dave who was listening to Uncle Willy, before shaking his head and falling silent.
The sound of running feet caused the whole gathering to spring up and look at the breathless native woman running their way. “Andy, you better get down there,” she called. “Some hogface is talking all kinds of crazy and trying to tell us we don’t own the Hatchery. The dummy-bunnies are getting jittery and our people are ready to fight.”
The entire gathering turned to look at Andy and the silence that hung in the air was oppressive. Willy broke the silence. “Go speak good purp, neph; you already know what you're going to do.”
----------------------
The look of horror on the Rakiri Forewoman’s face just about summed up everything Andy needed to know about his appearance. He didn’t think she believed his quippy lie about slipping off the trail and tumbling down a tree studded hill, but she didn’t press all that hard either.
He was led quickly towards a heavy set Shil’vati woman in a pantsuit, standing next to a sleek black Shil’vati sized sedan. Her back was facing him, while she seemed to be trying to loom over a tan furred Erbian woman who was rapidly tapping her toe and glaring up at her. Her ears were pulled back in what Andy had come to recognize as annoyance or anger. Andy approached as silently as the Rakiri woman that flanked him until he stood quietly listening to the Shil woman talk. Andy stood for a moment and took stock of the woman. Her clothes were fancy and tailor made, but displayed no rank pins, badges, or any other symbols to identify her. Her hair was a conservative bob cut, but the beret in it was gold and jewel encrusted.
“-and I insist that you take me to the human or humans that own this property immediately. Failure to comply will-”
“What do you want, hwun’eetum?” Andy boomed his voice, sudden and loud enough that he knew he could have been heard over gale-force winds. It had the desired effect of causing the Shil’vati woman to screech and stumble to the ground. Andy enjoyed watching the play of emotions on the Shil woman’s face as she looked up from the gravel patch she’d fallen down on. Anger turned to confusion, to horror, and back to anger again before she managed to fake a mask of neutrality as she picked herself up and tried to brush herself off. A little crowd was starting to form behind Andy and he adopted his best stoic persona.
“Are you the human owner of this facility?”
“You might say he
speaks for ‘em, hwun’eetum. What do you want?” A voice from the crowd shouted, and Andy folded his arms and cocked an eyebrow at the flustered woman.
“You have a message for the Salish? Speak, I’m listening.”
“I am Agent Lana Ti’lanis from I-TAD, and I’m here to make an appraisal on this business and assess the tithe owed to the Empress. You will kindly order a work stoppage until my investigation is complete.” The woman tried to look official and domineering, but it was hard to take her seriously with her suit mussed and off kilter, not to mention she lacked that gravitas and arrogance that Andy had come to expect from his run-ins with government agents. Still, she did crowd into his personal space, getting far closer than he was comfortable with.
Andy reached down into his pocket and pulled out his pack of Lucky Strikes. Without giving an inch to the woman, he jumped a cigarette up into his mouth and lit it. He took a quick drag and puffed the smoke into the woman’s face, causing her to cough and sputter before retreating a step or two.
“Sorry, about that, these things do have a tendency to reach out and grab ya.” Andy waved the cigarette around before popping it back in his mouth and letting it sit there. “So what’s dis here ‘eye-tad’ an’ why should we stop what we’re doin’ fur it?” He adopted his thickest Indian drawl as he slouched a little, shoving one hand in his pocket.
The woman gave Andy an appraising look and flashed him a predatory smile. “Well Mister…?”
“Injun. Joe Injun.”
She took out an omnipad and began typing. “Injun, Joe. Is that spelled with a ‘J’ or a ‘G’?”
“Two ‘J’s and an ‘E’ at the end.”
“Contact number?”
“Three six oh, eight six seven… five… three, oh, nine.”
“Ok, well, Mister Injun, I have some bad news for you. You see, when the Vaida Warren gifted this facility to your clients, they failed to give notice to the Imperial Government by filing form A-113. I’m sure your clients will be able to have this little issue resolved if you could provide me with the Government ITAD exemption number? Every government organization has one… You
are a part of the Imperial bureaucracy, yes?”
“No. We… that is to say,
my clients… are all Injuns, an’ the numbers we got come from the Government, innit?”
“Oh, I’m afraid that’s going to be a problem. If the Vaidas acquired the facilities with government funds and gifted them to a private entity, that’s going to trigger a 23-19. I’m going to need you to read over this file, Mr. Injun.” She held her omnipad up expectantly waiting to swipe over the file, but Andy took the whole omnipad out of her hand instead. He backed away and turned so that only he could see the screen; holding it up and pretending to try and change the angle so that he could read it in the sunlight, but Andy used the sudden screen privacy to minimize the file. Instead of reading, he began rifling through her contacts and login settings. It hadn’t escaped him that she hadn’t shown a badge, but the Shil weren’t known for always flashing those anyway.
“Uh, hmm, well yes, Mr. Injun… I could always send it to you-” She tentatively reached out to try and take back her omnipad, but Andy blew another puff of smoke in her face, causing her to recoil away from him without her property. Andy started slowly pacing while he started rifling through her camera gallery, social media, and even got her bank account open. One thing became very clear to him almost immediately. ‘Agent’ Lana was not from the government. Her direct deposit paychecks came from a ‘Mavri’petra Venture Capital Investments LLC’. Andy took a screenshot of her bank and personal information and sent it to himself before deleting the thread on her end and erasing the screenshot. He turned and pulled the file back open and put it at the bottom before handing it back to her.
“I’m sorry, I’m not sure I understan’ dis. Could you explain what a 23-19 is to me?” Andy adopted the most innocent and ignorant look he could. He almost tripped over his own accent and decided to dial it back some.
The woman gave Andy a patronizing look and an indulgent smile. “In short, Mr. Injun, it means that your clients would be responsible for not only the cost to the Imperial taxpayer, but for the appraised value of the property and business too.” She looked him up and down before running her gaze over the humans in the crowd behind him. “A property like this and the two others that were gifted to your clients? You could be looking at millions of credits, payable upon completion of the assessment. Would I be correct in assuming that your clients would be… hard pressed to make such a payment?”
Andy made a show of thinking by rolling his eyes up and pursing his lips. “Dat’s a lotta money for us Injuns, innit?” Andy called out to the crowd who had mixed reactions of laughter and serious affirmations.
“It’s my duty to inform you that standard bankruptcy laws wouldn’t apply to this assessment, and after full seizure of all assets, if the payment cannot be made, then the minimum sentence would be ten years for all of you and your families.”
Andy thought about shivering for effect, but thought better of it.
Less is more. “That’s a bit steep for acceptin’ a gift, innit?”
“I know it can seem like it but… I’m not exactly supposed to do this, but…” The woman fished a card out of her blouse and offered it to Andy. “My Kho-wife is a member of Mavri’petra. It’s a philanthropic organization that specializes in helping citizens of newly acquired worlds protect their assets from government seizure by buying the titles of contested property or businesses and holding them under the LLC tax umbrella. It’s all quite technical and she could explain it far better than I can, but it does ensure that these little tax wrinkles are sorted out, while making the true owners partners with full shares in the organization. While I’m conducting my appraisal, you could give her a call. I’m sure she’d love to help you and the rest of the Injuns!”
Andy turned and gave the gathered crowd a look. The Erbian and Rakiri engineers were whispering, clearly worried about ITAD and any potential tax issues that could shut down the project. The Hwatcoms on the other hand, had a completely different reaction.
“Do you think your wife could help me? I just inherited this bridge out in Brooklyn and I don’t want to deal with the taxes, would your wife be willing to buy it too?”
Before the woman could answer, another voice from the Hwatcom side of the crowd behind Andy shouted out. “My family’s been in possession of this prime real estate in Florida. They want to build a mall there, and we want out before we can’t afford the taxes. Could your firm assist and buy it from us?” Several other questions in the same line flew out fast and furious as the alien engineers started to catch on to what was happening. The Shil woman however seemed completely oblivious.
”Listen, of course I’ll be happy to let my wife know about that bridge for sale and that land in Florida. I’ll tell you what, why don’t I ask and see if she’s willing to buy this place sight unseen? I’m sure I could get you around one and a half million credits worth of shares. It’d be worth ten times as much as the salary you’d make working for the Government Ecologists. What do you say?” she asked as she started to place a call on her omnipad.
The sudden laughter from everyone present stopped her in her tracks, and she stared in confusion as the whole crowd started to break up. The Forewoman started shouting that the break and the show were over, leaving only Andy standing with the now flustered woman.
“I think… you need to leave,” Andy growled as he looked over to the treeline and got in her face to blow smoke in it again. “You tell your greedy, colonial, slitlicking ‘
wife’ that our land and our heritage aren’t for sale. So you best leave before they never find you again.”
“You can’t threaten me, I’m an Agent of-”
Andy grabbed her by her ear and dragged her back to her vehicle and shoved her in. “I just did, and if you have more than two functioning brain cells, you’ll see that my threat is intended to
save your life; because you’d be safer trying to take a carcass from a pack of starving Rakiri than be standing right here, right now.” Andy looked up and nodded at Willy who was standing a ways off, watching the whole scene with the rest of his gathering.
“But I-” she sputtered as Andy slammed the door on her.
“Everybody gets
one… and you just burned
yours.”

Chapter 24: Good Intentions with Unlimited Budgets
Andy awoke with a start. It was still dark outside, or at least it was inside the strange room that he found himself in. The bed was gigantic and far softer than he was used to, though he supposed it was a vast improvement over the sleeping bags, wooden bunks in fishing boats, and the futon in his room. The only thing that was familiar were the smells of the forest that were growing outside his window on the wide balcony. The grass covered outcropping on the spire had become the domain of Puck, and Andy’d left the sliding door open to the cool air, letting out all the built up heat in his room. He looked around and found the digital clock that was on the table next to his bed, and squeezed his eyes shut. It was 5:07 am.
Damn, slept in during fishing season, I must have overdid it last night. The empty half gallon bottle of Jack Daniels clinked on the ground as he swung himself out of bed, and he felt the familiar pangs of the hangover start to hit him. Stumbling over to the bathroom, Andy nearly did a header into the cold water as it fell like a rainfall from the stall ceiling. Andy bit back the cry of shock as the bracing cold shocked his system into alertness. Looking down at the sudden clinging feeling of cold, he groaned. He was still wearing his white button down and his socks.
“Son’uva bitsh…” His lips felt weighed down and his tongue moved a full second slower than it ought to, causing him to slur his words. Slowly and deliberately, bracing himself against the wall as the water got warmer, he peeled his sodden clothes off and went about cleaning himself up. Opting to go the bare minimum of decent with boxers and a tee shirt, Andy focused on putting one foot in front of the other to get some breakfast.
Andy stepped out of the suite and into the empty little common area. Three long couches surrounded a low table in a plush little living area in front of a large wall sized screen. Behind it was a long table with twelve seats in a dining area, which looked out at the main entryway to the balcony. It was getting light outside, but the sky was overcast again, cutting the view of the sunrise. He walked past and looked out to see Puck curled up under one of the benches, snoozing away. He walked quietly towards the other side of the open room to the kitchen area and began to take stock.
The inside was thankfully devoid of that insidious purple that took him right back to the residential school, replaced by clean white and broken up green plants, flowers, and ferns. The only thing missing was cedar siding with a few corner post logs, and it’d almost be homey.
He opened the refrigerator and smiled. The warm light inside showed that his whole shopping list had been quietly delivered and put away. Eggs, bacon, sausage, milk, apple juice…the works. He quickly began investigating the cabinets and cupboards and found them similarly stocked according to his list of ‘essentials’. He turned around and smiled at the empty common area. He had the whole space to himself, and for the first time in days, he felt himself start to relax.
First things first, take out the hangover… He started pulling out bottles and quickly made himself a Bloody Mary. He hated the taste, but it always made him functional after self medicating the day before. With the first hit of the spicy, tomato-y awfulness, he felt himself finally shake the dregs of last night’s bender off.
Time now for breakfast.
On the wall was an omnipad which he opened up to his old music accounts online. His dad’s old playlist was still there in the old family accounts. Selecting the ‘Old School Cool’ playlist, Andy pulled two large jars of smoked salmon out of the back of the fridge where he’d stored them along with some sour cream and chives as the first chords of the piano played loud over the speakers. He belted out the lyrics as he began to assemble one of his favorite starts to the day.
“JUST TAKE THOSE OLD RECORDS OFF THE SHELF!
I’LL SIT AND LISTEN TO ‘EM BY MYSELF! TODAY’S MUSIC AIN’T GOT THE SAME SOUL!
I LIKE THAT OLD TIMEY ROCK AND ROLL!”
---------------------------
Kalai jumped nearly a foot off the bed and tumbled halfway out to the floor. The sudden blast of music coming from beyond her door had startled her badly, and her head whipped around in the gloom. She could make out the outline of Sitry in the corner of the room, having jumped further and farther than she had, and was on the ground.
“What in the blight is going on?” Sitry squeaked as she stood up. The music coming from beyond the door was rambunctious and loud, and unlike anything either of them had ever heard before.
“You don’t think…?” Kalai glanced back at the door.
“No way that’s frickin’ Narny! His royal vainness doesn’t wake up before seven unless it’s an emergency; you know that,” Sitry hissed as she began pulling open drawers and opening the closet.
“I mean, who else could it be? Andy was exhausted, and he looked ready to collapse when we left him here yesterday." It took Kalai and Sitry a bit to find something to cover themselves. Kalai threw a robe on and opened the door just as the song ended. The lights were still off, except in the kitchen and she walked out into the living area. There was a squeal of embarrassment from behind her, and Kalai felt Sitry pull her down to hide on the couch as another song began to play.
“What are you-” Kalai started to shout over the music, but Sitry put her hand over her mouth to silence her and pointed towards the kitchen. Kalai poked her head over the couch and her eyes nearly popped out of her head. There was Andy, hair loose, dressed in a white, nearly see-through shirt that hugged his chest and short shorts that showed off his legs and rear. He was dancing and singing along at the top of his lungs with his dog turning circles and barking along. Sitry pulled herself up beside her, holding her ears down as the two of them watched the forbidden show on the other side of the room in the kitchen.
“What is he
doing?”
“Smells like he’s making breakfast.”
“Goddess
damnit! Why can’t
all dudes act like that
all the time?”
“Because we know you’d be this creepy if we did.” Narny’s tired growl caused them both to turn around and stare. “You have five seconds to stand up and let Andy know we’re here before I do it and ruin
any chance you have with him!”
Kalai and Sitry looked at each other and stood up together. Kalai took point, walking around the couch and stood by the table, and tried to make herself look as contrite and small as possible.
“Andy? What are you doing up this early?”
--------------------------
The crepes were coming along fine, and the first of the salmon blinis was just about ready to assemble, and Puck was jamming out to the music like they always did.
“COUSIN PULL THE BOAT ASHORE, HALLELUJAH!
COUSIN PULL THAT BOAT ASHORE, HALLELUJAH!
SEND SALISH STOMMISH OFF TO WAR, HALLELUJAH!
TAKE THE ISLANDS BACK FOR SURE, HALLELUJAH!
LIKE JOSH-OO-WAY AT JERICHO, HALLELUJAH!
THAT DAMN DAY SCHOOL’S NEXT TO GO, HALLELUJAH!”
Sure those weren’t the words to the Harry Belafonte song, but that was something Dad used to do, and even recorded himself modifying lyrics to songs. Either that or using songs to tell stories. When it was too early to drink the bad thoughts away, then at least he could sing a little trash and treason in private.
“Andy? What are you doing up this early?”
Kalai’s voice cut over the music right in the changeover from the refrain, and he nearly launched all the way up to the tall ceiling. The scream of surprise and terror that ripped out of him even scared Puck into a twisting jump and he started howl-barking. Andy spun around to see Kalai nearly fall backwards over the dining table behind him, wearing a bathrobe that had fallen open, and little else. She was still covered, but only just, and everything else was suddenly forgotten at the gorgeous woman staring at him, looking just as scared as he felt. His brain short circuited as his eyes roved up and down, and suddenly, she seemed to realize what her robe wasn’t doing. She closed it hurriedly and flushed a deep dark royal purple, turning to rearrange and tie her robe back up to cover herself. He scrambled over and fumbled with the omnipad as the song came to an end and a heavy awkward silence fell in the space.
“I…I…um…you…wha…” Andy sputtered in shock as he twisted and hunched around, trying to hide the effect her accidental display had on him.
“You…your music is really loud.” Kalai’s voice was a small embarrassed whisper that crashed into the silence.
“I thought the bellhop said there wasn’t anyone in the other suites…” Andy stammered as he looked up to see Narny had practically tackled his sister and was holding her ears over her eyes while she struggled against him.
“Pops thought that you might like friendly neighbors to keep an eye on you and help you settle in. He thought it’d be a good idea if you weren’t left on your own,” Narny grunted as he wrenched his sister away. “When we came in you were already sound asleep. The plan was to get up early and make you breakfast to see if you’d be ok with it, but it seems that’s right out.”
“Breakfast?
Oh shit, my blini!” Andy turned and quickly got the thin pancake off the griddle and onto the plate. It did give him time to get his heart and…other things…back under control. “Well, if you give me a bit more time, I can go ahead and just whip up breakfast for all of us.”
“Maybe get dressed first? These two hungry bitches can’t think with you being a manic pixie dream boy in the kitchen.”
Andy turned in time to see Sitry finally break her brother’s grapple and shove him down on the couch. She too had fallen open but she was wearing a negligee under it, so she was at least technically decent, but good lord it hugged her curves and her figure perfectly.
“Naranjo, could you make sure the blini doesn’t burn while I go put some pants and a real shirt on?” Andy mumbled while Puck whined as he stared up at the stove, having sniffed at Naranjo before trotting back to beg for salmon.
Sitry stood behind Kalai, smiling awkwardly at him while Kalai seemed to be trying to avoid his eyes while being rooted to the spot. He was more than happy to avoid eye contact as he quickly retreated back to his room while Naranjo scrambled up off the couch. The last thing Andy heard was both girls yelp in pain when their brother flicked both their ears as he went to take over in the kitchen. Andy dressed quickly and chose not to think about the whole affair. Throwing on some jeans and a long sleeve shirt, he returned to see Naranjo in the midst of pouring another blini into the pan and the girls were nowhere to be seen.
Andy walked over to Naranjo, who flashed him an apologetic look while he worked the griddle. Andy silently whipped up more batter while Naranjo worked the blini station. He pulled some plates out and started assembling the blinis, slicing the chives thin and adding them to a swath of sour cream and a generous helping of cold smoked sockeye before rolling and folding them up. Neither of them spoke the entire time, and between the two of them, they made enough for all four of them to have as much as they wanted.
The girls reemerged just as the two of them finished setting the table and were about to sit down. Kalai was dressed in black knee length pants with gold buttons and a loose fitting blue and white striped shirt. She looked like she’d stepped out of a play about pirates, and Andy couldn’t help but chuckle at the image of her in a tricorn hat and an eyepatch. Sitry, by contrast, looked like she was on her way to a yoga class with skin tight yoga leggings and a tight shirt that left her shoulders exposed, but covered her arms all the way to her wrists.
The girls stood in the living room, clearly nervous as Andy and Naranjo took their seats at the table. “Well? You two going to let this get warm? Chow’s on!” Andy gestured to the empty seats next to him and Naranjo and the girls took their seats.
“I’d have let them stew a bit longer,” Naranjo muttered as he stared daggers at Sitry and Kalai.
“To be fair, you all’ve seen me with far less on…It’s that I wasn’t aware that I was sharing the space with anybody, or else I’d have not blasted my music. I’m sorr-”
“
You’re sorry?” Naranjo squawked indignantly. “No!
THEY should be apologizing to YOU!”
“Dude, Naranjo…chill. It’s ok, really. Besides…turnabout's fair play.” Andy felt himself flush a bit, as did Kalai and Sitry and opted for the high road. “So how about we just admit we saw a lot more of each other than we probably should have and move on? Please?”
Naranjo seemed to chew on that as he looked from Andy to the ashamed looking girls and scoffed.
“We’re sorry. We keep on walking in on you, and…” Sitry muttered quietly, looking down at her plate.
“I forgive you, and it’s twice now. So that's just a coincidence. I’ll be sure not to put myself in that position again. I can’t keep making it easy for you to continue getting the wrong impression of me." Andy kept his tone light and he took a long pull to finish off his Bloody Mary and grimaced. Silence followed as they all served themselves up and dug in.
“So…why
were you up so early?” Sitry’s timid question caught Andy mid chew of his last blini and he took a moment to finish.
“Fishing season. The salmon are running right now, and you gotta be up for the tides to get hits. Normally I’m up around 3…3:30 in the morning to get the best spot.”
“Really? Where’s that?” Naranjo smiled cheekily and leaned in, his ears twitching slightly.
“If I told ya’, I’d have to kill ya.” Andy made sure to smile widely to make sure the three knew it was a joke. He kept his tone light, hoping they’d laugh. Naranjo looked affronted, but he did get a giggle from the two girls.
Two for three, not bad.
“So why’re you dressed like a pirate?” Andy turned to Kalai and hoped to keep the lighter tone of the conversation going.
“Excuse me?” Now it was her turn to be taken aback, while Naranjo and Sitry gave little chuckles.
“Poofy shirt, short pants…you look like a gender swapped extra from Captain Blood." Andy looked her up and down and she canted her head quizzically at him.
“Who?” Sitry asked, now confused.
“You mean…Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, and Basil Rathbone and…ok, I know what we’re doing tonight!” Andy felt a surge of excitement. He hadn’t had a good movie night in forever.
“I’m not sure…what?” Naranjo looked from the girls back to Andy who was now beaming happily.
“Movies! My family LOVED movies! Heck, half of Dad’s video letters when he was on deployment were quotes and references!”
Understanding hit the three of them at the same time and all three lit up with the same excitement that Andy felt. “You know human movies? I LOVE human movies!” Kalai slapped her hands on the table.
“Really? What’s your favorite?” Andy shifted in his seat and leaned in slightly.
“Well, 300 is up there, but anything with Arnold Schwarzennager is amazing.” Kalai looked to Sitry and she nodded enthusiastically.
“Eh, they’re
fun, but his best was Terminator 2 and Predator. Conan the Barbarian was cheesy goodness, but Mako was the
man in that movie.” Andy rocked back, slightly disappointed, but now determined to share the massive movie collection that was Dad’s pride and joy.
“So what are your favorites?” Naranjo’s riposte saw Andy fix the rabbitman with a predatory grin.
“Why do you make me pick? I watch movies to fit my mood and there’re so
many greats! I mean, if you’re into ships and pirates-” Andy looked back at Kalai with a raised eyebrow and a glance down at her chest.
“Sailing? You have movies about sailing?” Kalai was suddenly breathless and almost started vibrating in her seat.
“Hell yeah! Captain Blood, the Horatio Hornblower series, Master and Commander, White Squall, The Pirates movies with Johnny Depp are a bit silly but it’s a good popcorn series…” Andy started listing the sailing movies in his collection, rattling off the titles from memory. “Moby Dick, Treasure Island…the best one with Charlton Heston, Cutthroat Island, Mutiny on the Bounty…and those are the ones just off the top of my head!”
“I love sailing, can we watch those in our spare time?” Kalai looked pleadingly from Andy to Sitry and Naranjo.
“I don’t know, most sailing movies you like are long on technical accuracy and short on adventure and fun. Though with names like ‘Captain Blood’ and ‘Cutthroat Island,' I guess they sound alright.” Naranjo looked unsure and pursed his lips while giving Kalai the side eye.
“Just wait ‘till you meet Captain Dawg. He’s easily the most ruthless pirate captain of the bunch…except for maybe Heston’s John Silver. We’ll start slow with Blood, since it’s the oldest, then we’ll work our way up to the more modern stuff.”
“Well why don’t we start now? It’s only 5:40 and we don’t have to check in until 8.” Kalai gave Naranjo the biggest puppydog eyes Andy had ever seen, and he stifled a laugh watching the bunny’s face scrunch and twist until he finally relented.
“I’ve got the vidscreen!” Sitry literally leapt out of her seat over the couch and pulled the remote out to turn the screen on. Andy laughed and walked over to the omnipad in the kitchen and plugged in his account password. Naranjo settled on one of the side couches grumpily and sprawled out, taking it for himself. Sitry took the main couch and waited. The library popped up on the vidscreen and as he scrolled through the titles, he could hear the happy gasps from Sitry and Kalai.
“I warn you, it’s in black and white because it’s close to a century old,” Andy called as he started the video and sat down on the same couch as Sitry. Kalai joined and the two girls sat on either end of the couch with him in the middle as the movie began.
------------------
Kalai was walking on air as the four of them followed along on Andy’s tour of the facilities. The alien sailing vessels were so different, but at the same time so familiar. There’d only been a few scenes aboard ship, but that wasn’t the real draw. The ‘swashbuckling’ as Andy called it and the strange role reversed love story humans were so fond of were. The dashing and pretty Captain Blood and his paramour the handsome Lady Bishop were a sight to see. It was a chaste romance, and something that would have been right up the Ministry of Culture’s alley were it not for the rebellion and slavery. She sighed.
Just another wonderful human story that’ll never see the light of day in the Empire. The swashbuckling itself reminded her of the ritualized duels with the long sailing knives that were part of the history and tradition of the Vaascon Armada. The humans, it seemed, shared that with the Shil during their Age of Sail, but they seemed to favor longer, thinner, and very flexible blades. She couldn’t believe that something that thin and whippy could have posed a threat, but Andy had assured her that those blades had existed and that there was even a human sport where people still fought with them.
The tour was mildly interesting to her, with the genetics and climatology labs fairly standard and old hat. Andy, on the other hand, seemed to be in a perpetual state of awe. They’d walked him through the layman’s tour of the climate monitoring stations, and the climate management teams were cordial. He’d been silent the whole time, seemingly overwhelmed to see the nerve center that was coordinating the atmospheric scrubbing and the ozone replenishment projects from thousands of stations around the world.
It was fresh to see it through the eyes of someone who’d never experienced the science and artistry of planetary management before. Unlike most of the rest of the Imperium, the Vaidas built their systems custom to each colony and planet under their care. It meant that each colony management system was custom tailored to the planet, and it meant that the Imperium couldn’t just take the project away from the Vaidas once started. Eco-forming a world was a long, involved, and expensive process that the Vaida Warren had mastered a long time ago, and they knew how to ensure the shifting tides of politics and economics wouldn’t see a project that may have taken two or three generations stripped from them partially completed for monetary or expediency’s sake by colonial interests. “You can’t rush perfection,” had been a common refrain from the Vaidas involved in the many colony and station development projects.
Truth be told, Kalai was looking forward to the last part of the tour- the aquaria and terraria labs. Even though this was their System Headquarters, the whole of their live labs were devoted to the local biome. She stood behind Mama Aftasia and Papa Rhaxiid, with Sitry and Naranjo next to her while Mama Sakalbi and Andy stood in the front of the spacious elevator near the doors. There was a soft chime as the lift came to a halt.
“Welcome to Applied Aquatic Sciences, Mr. Shelokset,” Mama Sakalbi announced proudly. In front of them was a gigantic glass tunnel leading to a pressure door in what looked like a long walk away. Thankfully, there was a moving walkway in the center, with occasional entry and exit points for various observation and monitoring stations that lined the edges of the massive aquarium.
Around the tunnel was a massive kelp forest, where silvery fish darted in and out. Along the bottom of the tank were colorful and strange creatures and rocks that seemed to move. Kalai and her foster siblings stood on the moving walkway, gawking at the panoramic underwater view. Beyond, fish of all shapes and sizes swam lazily through the massive aquarium. “This is one of six mega aquaria where we’ve been attempting to recreate the regional oceanic conditions to study the biosphere in a controlled environment. This is one of the larger tanks where we’ve been trying to recreate the San Juan ocean system.”
“We call it the Salish Sea,” Andy noted as a school of giant, torpedo-like fish almost the size of Naranjo swam past.
“We’ve been able to create a stable habitat with a balanced but closed system. It has allowed us to set benchmark targets, but we’ve been having trouble recreating these conditions out in the wild.” Mama Sakalbi pouted her lips in frustration and her tail gave a twitch. A small furry, eel-like creature dove past them and scooped up a spiked ball before rising quickly up towards the surface.
Kalai pulled her gaze away from the undersea world around her when she heard Andy speak in a tone that sounded critical. “There’s quite a bit of transients, and there are certain seasons that fish and shellfish mature for harvest. Have you accounted for that?”
“Some,” Mama Sakalbi answered. “We know about your salmon, and we know it’s an important fish in the region. We also know about your halibut and prawns. We have them stocked in this tank too.”
“What we don’t understand is that the population of salmon doesn’t seem to be increasing,” Papa Rhaxiid chimed in now. “You are correct about the issues with…Atlantic Salmon…but we don’t understand where the various subspecies of pacific salmon go. They seem to only appear during certain times of the year, and then they disappear. We’ve observed their bodies washed up in rivers, but we don’t understand why.”
Andy blinked several times and stared at Papa Rhaxiid as though he was crazy. “Twelve years doing this and you don’t know about salmon?” Andy’s tone was confused, and he shook his head as though he’d been slapped.
“It hasn’t helped that in twelve years, you’re the first expert-”
“I’m no expert,” Andy interjected quickly as he looked back up at the passing seascape. “There are others who know
way more about the science than I do. I just know the stories…and a lot of the folks that ran the old fisheries before you threw us out,” Kalai saw Andy’s jaw tighten and he gripped the railing of the moving walkway and a pall seemed to fall over him. “What I know are the stories, and what I’ve picked up hunting and fishing here and in Alaska for the last five or six years.”
“We’re all ears, Mr. Shelokset.” Mama Aftasia’s voice was light and inviting, and Kalai took an instinctive step towards Andy but stopped short of standing next to him.
Andy was quiet for what felt like a long time. “Salmon don’t hang around. They spawn upriver where they end their lives. When the fry hatch, they live in freshwater slowly swimming downstream as they get bigger. Once they hit a certain size or age, they swim out to the sea and travel all over the pacific for around five years or so before swimming back.”
Kalai looked back at her foster parents and suppressed a grin at the tandem expressions of realization. “So that’s why we don’t see them in the waters year round!” Mama Sakalbi pulled out her omnipad and began typing away. “But we’ve been cloning and releasing fry for close to a decade now. Why aren’t their numbers coming back?”
Andy’s laugh had no mirth in it whatsoever. “Well the simple answer is, you fucked up the rivers. The flood controls, culverts, the areas where you straightened out the rivers-”
“That was to contain and manage flood damage and water flow-” Mama Sakalbi interjected, but Andy jumped right back at her.
“The land
needs those floods, and the salmon need those bends, eddies, ponds, and shaded areas with logs in the water to rest! We have flat bottomed boats and canoes for a reason, and salmon are one of the keystones on which everything in this whole region depends! We know this place floods, and most of us don’t mind it because we need the benefits of the flooding!”
Mama Sakalbi looked taken aback and she sputtered for a moment before speaking again. “The farmers in the area-”
“Of course they hate the flooding!” Andy exclaimed. “They’ve been trying to grow non-native crops. Plus the chemical fertilizers and pesticides they’ve been using have been God-awful for the rivers. There used to be controls and regulations about it, but then…
those went away…and when you let humans back into the region, you gave the farms back to the corporations, and not the
actual responsible owners!”
Her foster parents looked stunned and shot each other quick looks of confusion. “Are you saying…”
“If you want to restore the habitat, you’re going to piss some people off. The question is,
who do you want to piss off? The corporate plantations use pesticides and fertilizers that screw up the water quality with runoff and that kills off a serious amount of fry, along with a lot of other things!”
Just then there was a series of loud clicking and squeaks that seemed to reverberate through the tunnel. Kalai saw Andy freeze with a look on his face that seemed to be a mixture of fear and something else.
“
What are those!” Kalai heard Sitry shout as she and Naranjo vaulted the bannister of the moving walkway to stare up at six large black and white sea creatures the size of a Racing Skiff go swimming overhead. Kalai waited for a break in the bannister and exited the walkway with the rest of the group to stare up at the creatures who had turned from their course and were now swimming around the tunnel.
Mama Sakalbi looked up with pride at the sea creatures as they swam around and above the tunnel, clicking and squeaking. “Oh, the local school of cetaceans is here! I think you might appreciate this Mr. Shelok-”
“YOU KIDNAPPED J-POD?” Andy’s rage filled roar reverberated through the tunnel, echoing down the long corridor. Kalai saw all of her Erbian family flinch and reach up to clasp their ears. Even Kalai felt her ears ringing from the blast of sound that came out of Andy. Kalai looked at the irate human and felt a bolt of fear and a sudden urge to run pass through her. Andy’s posture was tense and his hands were balled into fists. His face was a rictus of rage and when she looked in his eyes, she could see violence lurking there.
“No, no! We took no animals from the wild! Every animal in our aquaria are clones! No wild animals were caged!” Mama Sakalbi quickly and fearfully explained.
The fire in Andy’s eyes died, but he didn’t relax either. His left eye started twitching and he practically ran to take a seat at an observation station. He turned his back on them all, cradling his head in his hands and in the terrified silence that fell, Kalai could hear him hyperventilating. The clicking stopped and Kalai watched as the creatures sped away, swimming away into the gloom and beyond the gently waving forest of kelp.
Kalai looked at Sitry, who shrugged while Narny seemed to shrink back behind his father. Mama Aftasia approached Andy carefully and stopped just out of arm’s reach. “We’re raising them to adulthood, and they’re scheduled for release in another two years. They’re meant to help rebuild the-”
“Cancel that plan. Cancel it
right now or I'll walk!” Andy spat out, whipping around to glare at Mama Aftasia.
“What? I…I don’t understand.”
Andy stood and turned away again, taking several deep breaths. Kalai watched as the tension drained out of him bit by bit. When he turned to face the rest of them, his voice was strained, but controlled. “Orcas raised outside a pod don’t integrate into new pods!” He paused as Kalai and the rest of them hung on his words with trepidation. “Orcas are more clannish than
humans! J-Pod, our resident
pod of Orcas, is barely holding on by a thread…and you intend to release tank bred, psycho
clones that don’t know ANYTHING about ANYTHING out there?” Kalai could see Andy struggling to keep himself under control, and she felt another wave of fear wash over her as his voice raised in volume.
Mama Sakalbi tried to answer. “But…they’ve been raised in-”
“A
closed environment with a petri dish for a mother and a syringe for a
grandmother!” Kalai looked and saw the confusion on her foster parents' faces. Andy caught it too and he continued, “Orcas are matriarchal, and grandmothers and mothers raise and teach the little ones. It’s not just a matter of popping out new Orcas, they have to be
raised as Orcas with their Pod’s protocols, traditions, and culture!”
“Let me guess…Orca People? Do your people have songs about them too?” Sitry’s question was timid, and Kalai feared another roar from Andy, but none came. Instead, he seemed to sag, like a marionette with several strings cut and he collapsed back into the chair. He nodded wordlessly, and took a few more steadying breaths until he seemed calm again.
“Orcas…like most everything that’s from
our homeland…they’re sacred to us. They were
our teachers! They were the ones who taught us to fish! Without them…hell, we have a
Clan that carries their name and the lessons they imparted to us from ancient times! My bro-” Andy stopped short and turned to look away, out into the aquarium.
Kalai stepped up and gently laid a hand on his shoulder. He flinched slightly, and when he looked up, she could see tears forming in his eyes. She was just about to pull her hand away when he reached up and patted it, holding her hand on his shoulder. He held her hand there until he was calm, cool and collected, before he released her hand and stood to face the Vaidas. “If the Clans knew about this? If they ever found out…hell, even the human hwen’eetums that care about them as much as we do…if they found out about this, they would go ape-shit! No one would talk to you,
ever! There’d be protests and at least a car bomb or two.”
“We didn’t know. We’ve spent all of our time and efforts mapping genomes, identifying and cataloging phenotypes and physical characteristics, along with health inventories. We weren’t aware that these animals needed to be raised in the wild in order to
be,” Mama Sakalbi looked back at her spouses as she spoke, and moved to stand next to Kalai.
“Andy, this is why we need your help.
We don’t know what we don’t know,” Papa Rhaxiid stepped forward to stand next to his wife. He had a determination in his voice that pulled at both Kalai and Andy, “You say we need to halt this plan? Done! We’ll make the call when we walk through that door at the end of the tunnel. Should we stop the cloning of all the rest of these animals? Are we making this same mistake with the other species?”
“I don’t know…” Andy turned and looked uncertainly back at the aquarium. “It depends on the species. What else are you cloning?”
“Well, salmon for a start, we manufacture ova and sperm based on observed bloodlines and from there we let nature take its course. We’ve identified over seven thousand distinct bloodlines and mixes, but do these fish need other fish to learn to be…fish?” Mama Sakalbi had her onmipad out and was poised to again take notes.
“I…I don’t know, but I know people who do.”
“Would you be willing to introduce us?” Papa Rhaxiid spoke with the same conviction, hope written all over his face.
“Alright…but you’re going to have to do
exactly what I say and hope they’re in the mood to speak with
either of us.” Andy spoke with the same determined conviction.
“Is there a reason why they wouldn’t?” Mama Sakalbi asked, and Andy gave her a long, silent look.
“We’re going to need some blankets, and I know just where to get them.”

2022.12.02 15:00 skitgoneget Fishing overhall
Fishing has been apart of Minecraft since the release of the nether, and while the general use of fishing does provide some help to early game players, it’s generally not very useful.
Since the introduction of Fish mobs, it has made fishing less useful than simply hunting them out. Pufferfish can be found rarely but sometimes in great quantities, tropical fish can spawn in many different ways, and cod and salmon are everywhere. Even so they can also be purchased from a wandering trader.
This understandably creates a problem for the fishing mechanic, as it’s only use would be for either finding saddles, name tags and other enchanted loot, which already can be purchased from villages with little to no struggle provided that the player has funds necessary, and is much easier than sitting for 30 minutes trying to catch these items.
What I suggest is more unique treasures and fish related items to be added, which can provide fishing as a useful method of obtaining unique early game foods and loot.
Using terraria as an example, there’s multiple rods, baits and accessories that can increase players fishing skill.
If mojang were to implement these changes, then I would love to see an addition to new unique rods which act differently and provide unique functions like chances of fishing up multiple items, or a greater chance to catch fish/treasure rather than treasure/fish.
Bait could be implemented, which like rods would also provide a better experience when fishing up a long sought item.
-edits and additions- New fish would be a nice thing to see as well. Fishes which can only be found in certain biomes, or depth.
With so many biomes added to the game, it would make sense that more unique fishing loot can be obtained, this is partially added through items fishable in jungle biomes. The Spruce biome for example could have higher chances to catch salmon and add new unique fish only fishable in that biome, like trout or pike, as well as having saplings and sweet berries added to the junk loot pool. Mesas could have a higher chance to fish up gold nuggets than other junks.
This could also be useful for biomes underground, with the new addition of aquifers, unique fish like the cave fish, or the blind cave eel. As well as an addition to the loot pool, with nuggets or singular metal bars being able to be fished up, As well as adding new fish for the sculk biome.
Unique fish could have different properties given to the player, with some removing effects, like the rare milk fish, while others providing them. A flying fish for example could give the player a short effect of jump boost, or a blind cave fish when eaten raw could blind the player, cooking would make the fish safe to eat however.
A comment made by
u/Gingermaster69 talks about the additions of multiple rods, one of wood, copper and iron. These rods could have a much more unique interaction with fishing as a whole, with each rod having a faster catch rate, range and durability. Yet due to the easy abundance of these materials, and that most players are able to get iron and copper in the first day, the wood rod would be rarely used. Which is why only the wooden fishing rod could be craft-able, while the Fisherman villager could sell the rest of them at different profession points.
New rods like the aforementioned iron and copper rods could be added, as well as others such as the ancient rod, found in the ancient cities, This rod would made of stone, and make the bobber sink a bit, but would have less of a chance to fish anything. Although the line of the rod would never snap, and give you a much longer time frame of catching when the bobber sinks. Or the mycelium rod which would have its own unique infinite bait, but that bait would be unchangeable. These rods are only examples, and any additions you can think of ill add.
Baits could also be added, each like the bobbers and rods, have properties exclusive to them. Most could be a higher increase of fishing chance, while some could be used to better fish up certain items. Baits could be mushrooms, rotten flesh, certain edible plants, worms if they are added, and even small fishes which could be added
Fishing isn't always successful, as there can be chances where the line snaps, and you fail to catch the fish, theres no penalty added, but it only means you have to try again.
A new mechanic of fishing could be added called range, where there is a higher chance of catching fish, the further away you are from them. The chance this would change depending on the size and depth of the water.
Depth is another new mechanic were there are unique fish and catching chances, depending on how deep the water is, yet these fish can only be caught by sinking a bobber, which is why new bobbers would be necessary for some fish.
New bobbers could be added to fishing rods, each with new purposes and mechanics. - A heavy bobber would sink to the bottom of the water, sinking as far as it can that the fishing rod allows. - A magnetic bobber would give you a greater chance of catching treasure. - The Hooked bobber gives a greater chance of catching fish, and decreasing the chance of a line snap. - A Feathery Bobber would make the timing of catching a fish to be longer. - A Rare multi-hook bobber would have a chance to catch 1-4 fishes, sometimes a treasure item as well. These are only some examples and i would love to see what you can think of.
However with line sinking, how would you know if you have a catch. A new sound effect would be added which sounds like a fishing reel, which would be played. As well as the rod would move forward in your hand, like a fish is pulling at it.
Additions to the loot pool could vary depending on the biome and depth. Underground biomes you could find broken tools, compasses, small amounts of ores and nuggets.
Ocean biomes, you could rarely find items from other biomes, such as saplings or other items native to them, the reason i suggest this is that the oceans are big, surrounded with lands each with unique biome, theres always the possibility that they got swept away.
There can of-course be Treasure items only accessible to fishing. with the new archeology update coming out eventually, there could be fragments of pottery which would tell the story of some ancient civilisation lost to the seas long ago. New treasure maps known as sunken maps could be found via fishing, with parts of the map damaged, it would be harder to read them, and would be further away. If a chest is found, it would be deep underwater, and players would have difficulty without the necessary equipment, but there struggle is worth it as there would be a double chest with much better loot. Unique relics and paintings, such as a image of a pre- sunken ship on the ocean, or a extremely rare Ancient mask, which would make mobs have a lower detection radius, yet would cover your screen like the pumpkin, with the screen being completely black with small holes dotted around the screen and a larger hole in the centre.
New advancements could be made, such as what
u/Zane-chan19 suggests with an advancement of catching every fish in the game, this is a great idea, as it would make players explore and work with the new mechanics i suggested, as well as allowing them to possibly catch items they didn't know was added, which would help tremendously with their playthrough. Other achievements like feeding a cat every fish they could eat.
With more unique fish, this could provide an easier way and more enjoyable way to trade with the fisherman villager.
Let me know what you think

2022.09.16 01:09 McDad81 Help with my custom mod pack... additions, redundancies, suggestions or comments!
Making a custom mod pack for my home server. My Kids, wife and I will play on it. Haven't made us a mod pack since 1.12.2, and getting a little more indepth this time. Added some custom recipe, stages and quests. Going to keep modifying recipes and quests as we go. Basic idea is your village was destroyed by an evil mage who opened portals from all the dimensions in the pack. You goal is to rebuild your village (w/ minecolonies) and seek revenge and kill the bad guys (wither, dragon, other bosses from mods etc). You were a basic villager so you dont have many skills besides basic inventory keeping as you worked in a warehouse (simple storage mod). To unlock more stages you need to build minecolonies builds, the smith for example to get more metals, or find books stolen from your town library that have knowledge you don,t (i.e. book on bontania unlocks botania, books made with kubejs and unique loots with itemstage conditions). Defeating dimensions bosses (twilight, ender dragon etc) will gate the story and some progression. Pack is very dungeon, magic and decoration heavy as I intend us to play this pack a long time so we'll have lots of building options to have fun with and end game just develop a cool world. Once all the quest are done it can be a fun pack just to build a town especially once all the resources are automated. End game complete lots of collection quests for more to do, all armors, all artifacts, all buddycards etc and build a museum, thats why i have advancement plaques, sword display and display case. Not a ton of tech (mostly create, botania and thermal) as I'm going for more medieval type pack with lots of exploring. Looking to know if any mods I have are redundant, mods that would play well in this pack I'm missing. Comments, criticism, ideas questions etc welcome. Heres the mod list

with so many worldgen mods i spent a long time on dungeon and structure configs, removed many biomes from BOP and used terrablender in the nether and overworld for balance between vanilla and modded biomes. Mobs will use in control to spawn in difficulty as the world progresses (used wonky days count and command to give days to do this, so day count is never correct). With in control mobs get harder he deeper you go in caves up to below -20 being 2.5x harder. World starts with only animals until you get your first set of equipment, a sleeping bad, grappling hook and canteen, to limit wife and kids frustration with gamemode hard mobs till we get established.
Thanks for input... looking for good world gen stuff I missed or must have mods I left out. Not familiar with 1.18.2 as i was with 1.12.5 any ideas welcome although not looking to add a ton of tech want to do most stuff with create.

2022.07.28 08:03 krob58 [USA-Seattle] [H] Limited Run PS4/Switch games, printing plates/cards, random games for many systems, box art/manuals, vinyl records, gaming memorabilia/loot/cool things, signed Halo/Deus Ex/Dead Space/Gwent/Destiny/Dragon Age [W] my game list, statues, vinyl records, new model 3ds, box art/manuals
Hello, reposting this with a few new additions. I'm mostly seeking the games/oddities at the bottom of this post, but will look at lists/offers. I'd like to save the things I've labeled as "hard trades" towards the things I'm seeking specifically, especially the statues and records, since those are proving to be ~elusive~. Let me know if you want any/more photos and sorry about the length of this post...
Located around Seattle, WA if you want to meet up to swap in-person. Can meet along i5 from Marysville to Tukwila depending on schedule. I'd like to trade within the con-USA but if you're elsewhere, tell me where and I can at least consider it!

So I've done a ton of stress testing and researching to try and figure out why randomly players on my server can't smelt ores in regular furnaces. I've found nothing. There's nothing showing up as an error or warning on either client or server side logs. There doesn't seem to be a specific trigger for it, as far as I can tell.

2022.07.09 19:47 Lurern Games with reasons to explore (besides visual)
I'd like to play RPGs where you can get really immersed with the world and story, but most importantly that the exploration is fun and worthwhile.
A couple good examples:
- Elden Ring was fun to explore because of the danger and cool locations, but you could also find some really nice weapons, spells or other good things. There was always something to find.
- In Dragon's Dogma you could find cool weapons and armor, and there were quite a few hidden places to search. Overall pretty good, but not exceptional.
- Terraria is really fun to explore at first, because you find new biomes with interesting loot and new enemies that can drop useful stuff.
- Metroidvania games are usually my jam, but I didn't think Metroid Dread had especially good exploration. Super Metroid was better because the items felt more meaningful to me. Castlevania SotN was awesome because you found cool weapons etc. Hollow Knight was pretty fun, but the map/compass mechanic sucked. At least you could find some fun charms.
- The old Fallout games were pretty cool because you were always wondering what's behind that door in the shop, and sometimes it was a minigun or power armor. And fun ways of getting back there. The newer ones didn't grab me as much, but still OK. Lots of boring filler loot. Same with Skyrim.
And some bad ones:
- Just played through Dragon Quest XI, and it had some of the worst exploration I've seen in a while. Littered with invisible walls and boring items like 10 gold or common materials. Nothing that sparks joy when you find it. I liked the story, charm and battle system though.
- For many of the same reasons, Tales of Arise had bad exploration (but was pretty good overall).
- Any Ubisoft-formula game is automatically disqualified. The last one I tried was AC Valhalla and that was just too big with absolutely no reason to explore.
- Horizon (both of them) had beautiful things to see, but no reason to do so. All I'd find was more monster parts or checklist items.
- Persona 5 isn't really exploration as much as it is puzzle solving to progress.
- You'd think No Man's Sky would be pretty good in the exploration department, but I just found it boring.
- Witcher 3 was actually mostly boring/checklisty to explore, but it had the occasional payoff in the form of "hidden" quests or stories. That is, in between the 83 nearly identical swords or other useless stuff you'd find. And the combat was boring, which made it worse.
I guess what I'm saying is that cool sights isn't enough, and I'd like some games where there is a reason for me to explore.
Also I don't like survival games.

2022.06.23 09:38 MischiefProLion7500 Idea: a Command Block for Terraria.
With this, adventure maps will be so much more interesting, from teleporting players to specific "coordinates" (we can see these with the depth metre and compass to display both vertical and horizontal positions) and even summoning specific enemies to specific areas, especially mini bosses. We can have it so it even activates after a specific type of enemy is defeated, mob or boss, and even create enemy projectiles facing a certain direction, allowing for interesting "traps" to be placed, or give an item or buff/debuff to a player, random player, or even all players
I could go on and on about these possibilities, but that's just the jist of it.
Like minecraft's counterpart, it can be activated on "impulse", "repeat", or "chain", but I really think giving Terraria their own Command Block will really open up a lot of possibilities for adventure maps to come.
"But we have statues!" Not for every enemy, nor mini bosses.
"But wouldn't that be complicated?" Well, probably, but it wouldn't be impossible to implement.
"But we can just get items in journey mode. Why give items via the command block?" Well, if you decide to go onto Tedit and change the worlds status off of journey mode to a different one, then it would make sense since the player is using a fresh character, and not having the ability to clone coins.
"But wouldn't this break progression?" No, as it requires Luminite Bars, cogs and some lunar fragments to craft.
"But why activate after killing a specific enemy?" Because this will allow for a challenge to adventurers if they want to progress the adventure map or obtain items locked behind a wall.
"But some servers do most if not all of the above!" Well, if you're playing in single player, you will thank me for providing this idea for your single player command block shenanigans.
"Will it also create projectiles such as potions that are thrown? Such as love potion or holy water? Perhaps even the powder bag effects?" Yes. If you want, you can make it create player projectiles too.

2022.05.30 19:21 -PepeArown- The Teleportation Anchor: A 2nd Use for Echo Shards (Hardcore Friendly)
A lot of people complained in my post about the totem of retention, my solution for another use of echo shards, that the idea was still completely useless in hardcore. Others said that it was basically just keep inventory, but with extra steps.
So, here’s another idea to make echo shards useful that keeps with the theme of respawning and spawn points, but that is still usable in hardcore: the teleportation anchor.
The respawn anchor added in 1.16 allowed crying obsidian to make a comeback in the game, and lets you set your spawn in the Nether with the cost of glowstone blocks.
The teleportation anchor would act in a sort of similar way.
Crafting
To craft a teleportation anchor, the recipe would be vaguely similar to a respawn anchor.
You’d need 5 crying obsidian, 3 echo shards, and 1 sculk sensors. (Still not too sure how to add pictures onto text posts on Reddit.)
Appearance
The teleportation anchor would have a relatively similar look to the respawn anchor. However, it wouldn’t be a full block, because it would accommodate the four tentacles of the sculk sensor. (It’s in the crafting recipe, after all.)
I think it would make sense if the teleportation anchor had the same crying obsidian look to it as the respawn anchor, only a bit more navy at the top to make it look like the sensor’s growing in a bit at the top. As mentioned before, four tentacles would be located on each top corner, surrounding the hollowing at the top. (Just like respawn anchors.)
There’d also be a front to the teleportation anchor which would show you how charged your anchor is.
Charging
You can charge respawn anchors with glowstone. But, for each use, you need a single block of glowstone.
That works because glowstone is relatively cheap, but echo shards are extremely rare in comparison.
So, while you would charge these anchors with echo shards, you’d get more use out of these shards. One echo shards would be enough to use the anchor four times. (The maximum amount of charges.)
When the anchor is charged, the hole in the front would have a four-cornered cyan and navy texture to indicate that you can use the anchor, just like how a charged respawn anchor will show you a glowy yellow texture when it’s fully charged.
Also, as a further indicator that you can use the teleportation anchor, once it’s charged with an anchor shard, the blank top part of the texture will have two teal souls spinning around it, just like in the mouth of a shrieker. So, there’s a way to use the spinning soul design without having to hear the shrieker’s horrid screams.
Usage
You’d tap on whatever teleportation anchor you’d want to use.
And, from there, it would kind of act like a Terraria magic mirror, but not a direct ripoff of it.
Chorus fruit can teleport you to a random location when you eat it. So, when you link yourself with a teleportation anchor, once you eat a piece of chorus fruit, you’d be teleported all the way back to the anchor. It essentially “anchors” your chorus fruit teleportation. And, unlike Terraria, you’d need a few seconds to eat the chorus fruit before you make it back to the anchor. The sculk senor is there in the recipe to essentially pick up on the vibrations of you eating chorus fruit so far away from the anchor.
So yeah. It’s an instant respawn mechanic just like the magic mirror, one that can be used without having to kill yourself.
Once you teleport back, a fourth of the echo shards you use to charge the anchor would he used up. Also, the anchor’s sensor would “activate”. This block could be used as a sculk sensor with its ability to pick up all vibrations, but that’s really just an added quirk that’s there because of the sculk sensor in the recipe. You could use these anchors in redstone, but I think normal sculk sensors would be a lot cheaper and more reasonable.
Important Notes
I’m not sure how balanced it would be to use these anchors in all three dimensions. But, you can get lost in all of them, so I think teleportation anchors should be able to set up in all dimensions without running the risk of them blowing up.
If the anchor you linked yourself to was destroyed, then, when you eat chorus fruit, it will just report you to a random location as usual. Pretty much just the same with how beds and repsawn anchors work.
And yeah. I think these blocks would be an immense help in your ability to explore without getting lost, or wasting so many hours of your time trying to get back home.
Tweaks to Ancient City Loot
This is a feature that would let you essentially exhaust echo shards, making them a far more valuable item outside of just crafting the anchors and recovery compasses.
So, since echo shards spawn so infrequently in ancient cities, I think Mojang should tweak the loot tables slightly so that using the anchors is a bit more fair and balanced. You should be able to find a bit more echo shards in cities than you do now. More than enough to craft a single recovery compass, at least.
And, maybe it seems a bit unfair that you need an item that you can only obtain in the End to use this item.
So, to assist players who haven’t made it to the End, as well as give a vague tutorial for how to use this item to newer players, I think chorus fruit should have a relatively uncommon chance of appearing in End city loot tables.
And, let me preface by saying that it would only be chorus fruit that you can find. You shouldn’t be able to find chorus flowers in ancient cities, otherwise there’d be no reason to hunt them out in the End. Also, you’d find at most like maybe half a stack of chorus fruit per city, which would let you use the the teleportation anchor just fine, but wouldn’t get you far if you wanted to make a build with purpur or End rods.
I have one more post planned for my echo shard suggestion series, in which I will be discussing a possible way to renew them.

2022.02.01 00:26 ItsAllSoClear Pimax 5k+ and Index controllers: First 6 hours, impressions, friends.
Intro
MMORPGs are my favorite genre. Started with EverQuest (never got past 35ish) and I've played nearly everything since. I'm always looking for that feeling of wonder and scale. I'm a UX Designer and SWE and I approach things as one would.
Let's set expectations: The game is in early access and is barely a beta in terms of content. However, much like indies like Deep Rock Galactic and Terraria, it has great bones to build upon.
Character
Emoda. I've been on Kitsune 3 - West.
I made it to level 8 as a Support Mage. I was pleased that the other specs had different weapon types and that I could be recognized by my abilities. At first my casting was clumsy but I got in the rhythm of opening with my abilities and switching to my weapons.
Tank Mage seems to have the most satisfying ability synergy right now.
Hardware and Accessibility
My Pimax FOV is maxed out. The game looks great and has an artstyle that scales well. However, Steamer often crashes during in-game loading sequences; death, fast travel.
Index controller support seems severely lacking: The game doesn't track my individual digits and I'm often low mana because I keep accidentally casting grip spells. Instead, I need to remain comically palm open like I do while gliding. This also led to a weird habit where I'll grip my Essence Mage weapons but not thumb press so in-game, if you pay attention, I just look like I'm finger gunning people.
We made one friend that remained silent and only gestured. No one called it out and we communicated well because of the physical medium. It was so natural. With that said, as an accessibility oriented professional, I immediately recognized the potential for individuals to express themselves in a way that just isn't possible on a flat experience. You have text emotes and such but this was so real and appealing to everyone; there wasn't friction like there would have been in a different game on a different medium. I can't wait to see more physical interaction and opportunity.
World
Overworld dungeons are a fantastic concept and I look forward to more complex ones. I want to be able to get lost in dungeons if I'm not careful; just like real life when I'm moonlighting as an adventurer.
I enjoyed being rewarded for exploration. I liked finding spund files and other secrets. I don't think chests need to be included on the compass but there are plenty of other discoverables besides.
Draw distance is impressive. I climbed as high as I could and I was not disappointed with the view. There are some rendering issues but it's understandable at this point.
Social
I made friends with one person because he wanted to show me his new ability. It's hard to describe, but it wasn't something that I feel like would have occurred on a flat game; the whole social interaction was so unique.
Another person asked if I needed help while I was fumbling and cast climbing up a rock face. They joined up for the rest of the night.
While I much prefer fewer servers and more community building I liked that you could avoid crowds or people by going to a less populated area.
Roadmap Wishlist
Weapon variety. I would love to play a Blade Tank but would prefer a sword and board option with gesture-based blocking mechanics. Alternatively, I'm interested in Blade Support but would want a mace and shield. Weapons may or may not be specific. I am a fan of class identity and the silhouette approach to class recognition.
- Bows always feel great in VR
- Gesture-based shield blocking
- Catalyst alternatives: Pistols, Revolvers
Social activities:
- In-game TCG or DBG
- Chess
- Music/midi support/barding.
More over world dungeons with rare boss spawns, treasure, etc.
Things to know?
- Support Mage weapons heal others
- You can grab two items out of a chest at a time if you grab two before the rest disappear
- You can easily teleport to places you shouldn't and will fall through the world
- You drain stamina while gliding or climbing and will end up climb casting incessantly
- Gather tears and turn them into the statue to improve your stamina

2022.01.25 05:27 Sushiman301 I am actually losing it right now
I have been spending the last twenty minutes hunting for mimics post Plantera so I can get a star cloak and create a mama cloak to help prepare me for the Lizhard temple. Instead of just giving me a simple common drop, Terraria has decided to provide me with: -Five Titan Golves -Four Philosopher Stones -Two Cross Necklaces -Three magic daggers -A jellyfish necklace -A compass -Two trifold maps -A bezoar -An adhesive bandage -A pocket mirror -Three beam swords -A rock golem head -And, last but not least, an actual effing Rod of Discord And still no star cloak. Oh, Cthulhu, please end my suffering.

2021.12.27 06:04 GiveMe30Dollars Totally Spoilt Playthrough, Initial Thoughts
For context, I have completely spoilt myself on anything and everything Hollow Knight related. I know of the Knight, the final boss, the secret final boss, and the
secret secret final boss.
Just picked up Hollow Knight during the Christmas Sale, here's some initial thoughts.
- The default keyboard controls don't work for me. I'm used to Terraria and Minecraft controls, and movement using the right hand just didn't work for me. Good thing I can rebind everything!
- Movement took a while to get used to, but there's a surprising amount of precision with the default jump, Mothwing Cloak and Mantis Claw, and it's really enjoyable and fluid to traverse Hallownest.
- Combat is amazing. The Soul mechanic incentivises risk/reward and enemies are designed well. My favourite enemies would be the Adult Mantises thus far.
- Exploration is interesting and leads into wanderlust often. I find myself using Wayward Compass less than I expected, simply because Gathering Swarm is more helpful and I am able to orient myself based on landmarks. The athmosphere of Forgotten Crossroads, Greenpath and Fungal Wastes is amazing, and it doesn't even hold a candle to the horrors of Deepnest!
- We all know the music is amazing, but I didn't expect it to be so adaptive. Certain parts of the orchestration are silenced or amplified based on combat intensity and location. My personal favourite is that the harpsicord that plays along the Fungal Wastes OST in the Mantis Village.
- Bosses are really well-made. So far I have defeated False Knight, Gruz Mother, Brooding Mawlek, Hornet 1, Massive Moss Charger and, personal favourite, Mantis Lords. Prior enemies teach the player the moveset of upcoming bosses and the tactics needed to counter or even punish them. Unlikely example: Hornet's moveset is an amalgamation of the mosquitos, Moss Knights and infected Mosskin.
So yeah.

2021.11.22 20:32 lockout18yt Episode 12: Washed Ashore
“Day… I can’t even remember what day it is. Does it matter anymore? It’s been around 3 years anyways. If you’re hearing this, more than likely they’ve sent a rescue team, and in that case, you already know who I am. Unless… well, unless they forgot about me. Which means they’ve covered everything up, the mission, the logs, me... In that case, my name is John B… something, I can’t even remember my full name, Wulfrum. And since the last time I made one of these logs, I’ve been busy developing something. Using a combination of several materials found here, I’ve developed a new alloy, I call it… well, Wulfrum. It’s highly versatile, and if I’m dead by the time you find this, I’ve built a house on the shore, there’s everything you need there, including instructions and several robots. This is a place of death, do anything it takes to survive. They’ve left us for dead. They’re never coming back...”
- Ancient spirits? -Jack was drinking water from a bottle made of iron and wulfrum, sitting on a hollow tree trunk, while Colt and Alex were running in circles around the house
- Yeah, creatures and beings more advanced than the others and… Have I told you about souls? -Amidias was standing next to Jack- Essentially, they’re what makes you… you! Anyways, long ago, someone decided to trap the souls of most of the dangerous creatures, alongside the Ancient spirits, and they set up a guardian to protect these souls from anyone. It is said then, that if you kill this guardian, the seal will break, and the ancient spirits will come back
- Is it true? -Jack was confused
- Enough talk! Keep going!
- Damn! -Jack got up and started following Colt as Alex went and sat down near Amidias
For the past 5 days, Amidias had been trying to train them, all while Andrew and Celestia were reconstructing their old house, with the first floor done by the 4th day. Andrew added a table, some chairs and a furnace, and Celestia helped with making several items, such as cutlery, plates and bottles from materials Andrew dug. Amidias also helped make a small anvil in which he fixed the trio’s armors.
They had also made some important advancements, mainly gathering sand from the desert and making glass containers for the creature's blood, which Amidias refined into “health potions” as named by Alex. The Sea King also noticed the tendril they brought back was infused with an ancient ore with magical capabilities, so he turned it into a wearable scarf. Using that same ore and several pieces of flesh and teeth, he created a small shield, and gave the scarf to Jack, and the shield to Alex.
The entirety of the fourth day was spent by both of them trying to master the art of dashing and dodging, while Colt wandered to the nearby frozen lands to gather materials for an armor. Today, they were on an endurance test. Colt was doing alright, but Alex and Jack were on the brink of collapsing before Amidias announced a 1 hour break.
After cooling off, Colt went back to designing his armor, while Alex went to sleep, and Jack continued forging bars from the mysterious red ore to make a sword.
- Why do you need so many swords? -Colt asked while poking the eye holes on his mask
- I don’t know, different uses I guess. This small one is good, but doesn’t have much reach, while the one we got from the eye is big and powerful, but I’d say a bit hard to use. I’m making one that’ll be more balanced, plus, it’ll have my personal touch!
- Personal touch? Hmm…
- By the way? What are you making your armor out of? -Jack asked, looking at the chestplate and greaves
- Uh, Amidias taught me how to do this weird stuff with snow so it doesn’t melt, and I’m mixing it with wood and other stuff. Speaking of which, I’m running out of materials, wanna go?
- Go where?
- Well, to gather them, in the snowy tundra, it’s west of here, just bring a coat or something
- Alright
- It’s that time of the gigacycle again! -Her footsteps echoed through the dark hallway as sorrow filled the prison cells to each side- Now, who will be first? -A majestic dragon was walking besides her, making sure everything went according to plan
Every month, each one of the strongest creatures Yharim captured were rounded up, and served to the ancient worm of destruction, the harbinger of death. The Witch opened one of the cells and took an old woman. The Witch looked at her, it reminded her of someone, but didn’t even have the chance to say anything before the dragon grabbed the woman and put her on its back
- Keep going, yeah, I know, you fiery nugget
They gathered several prisoners before The Witch opened a red portal into the cosmical worm’s dimension. Despite the hundred’s of layers of dirt above them, the brimstone portal’s glare was seen from miles away. Amidias looked at it. It reminded him of something. His home, his people. Gone, in seconds.
Once both the Witch and the Dragon passed through the portal, they found themselves in a big, empty room, the walls decorated with frozen time.
- Ah! Calamitas! It has been a while… hasn’t it? -A strong voice resonated inside the Witch’s head
- Do you ever talk face to face? Or are you always hiding behind people’s minds?
- Very funny. Tell me, have you brought them?
- Yeah, Yharim’s finest opponents -She said while the Dragon put all of them down
- Then tell him… -A massive portal opened in the middle of the room as the Devourer of Gods came from within- ....He won’t have to worry about his throne
- Is that all? Because if so, I have to do something
- Do not forget that my power is not unmatched to yours by much
- Yeah, we’ll try that another day…
- Try to get the softest patches! They work the best! -Colt yelled at Jack from the top of a tree while Jack used a small shovel to collect the snow. A heavy blizzard was raging through them, growing more intense by the minute, so they packed up everything they got and headed towards a small hole inside the snow
- How do you know it won’t fall on us? -Jack asked
- I don’t… -A faint beeping noise was heard- What’s that?
- Huh? What?
- Shut up! Listen, that beep -Colt whispered- Give me the shovel!
Jack handed Colt his shovel while moving out of the way. Colt started digging, eventually hitting something hard and metallic. It looked like the ship’s outside plating. They both tried to break it, only to be met by a small remote controller-like device, the beeping’s source. There was a small screen on it, which displayed a compass. Surprisingly, it worked, a small pulsating arrow was pointing towards the north east.
- There were many of these aboard the ship, right? I think they worked as beacons, like, you took one and alerted the ship of your location if anything happened -Colt said
- Yeah, I know, but… It means someone else must have the beacon source, right? And they would’ve activated it, so…
- Survivors, yeah. Then what are we waiting for?
- The blizzard’s end, maybe?
- Nah, let’s go, now!
- You know what I find the weirdest? In my… almost 40 years stranded here, I’ve learnt a few things. Mainly, that this planet is way too similar to Earth -The old man was standing on a small pier overlooking the vast ocean, next to the 13 year old child. Both were holding fishing rods- The atmosphere is breathable, the fish and plants are similar. Some animals too.. The day and night cycles are pretty much the same as well. - How so?
- Well, from some calculations I’ve made, a day is about 23.90 hours. The years are also similar, though not as much as the days. Each year seems to be about 423 days. I’ve developed a calendar and… damn! -The man’s rod had caught something- I got something heavy!
The kid stood up and tried to help him pull it up. The man clicked a small button on his beefy robotic arm, which seemed to compress it as he gained more force, enough to bring out of the water the piece of mangled debris from the ship they had just caught.
They both looked at it once they secured it on top of the pier. A small piece was beeping and blinking. It looked like one of the many control consoles scattered around the ship.
- Guys! Hey! -Colt was yelling while waving his arms, holding the beacon. He and Jack were approaching the house while everyone turned to look at them- We found something!
- What? What is it? -Alex started running towards them
- Oh my god! -Jack was panting before he sat on the ground- It’s… It’s a beacon, it’s bee… beeping… Jesus
- Ha! All those years sitting behind a computer were worth nothing! -Colt said
- Well, I wasn’t aware we were gonna crash on some surreal island of doom
- And uh… Is that a compass? -Alex was looking at the screen when Celestia, Andrew and Amidias arrived
- Yeah, it’s pointing somewhere to the north east, and according to Jack’s map, that’s somewhere on… the beach -Colt said while putting down his backpack
- Well it looks like you got some stuff to do, eh boys? -Said Celestia
- Yeah, but uh, I think I might have to finish my armor, I’m as vulnerable as it gets. Wanna help me out? -Colt was looking at Amidias
- Anything for one of my finest soldiers
- I’ll … get some rest I think -Jack started heading for the house
- Oh no, you don’t! -Amidias interrupted him- You’ll continue your training, as you should!
- What? Oh man…
- Ha! You dingu…-Alex laughed at Jack
- You too! -Amidias said, looking at Alex- Come on! No time to waste!
- Agh!
The next few hours were spent by Jack and Alex doing all sorts of exercises, pushing themselves to their own limits. Occasionally, Colt would join it too, but he was mostly working on his armor, with Amidias guiding him, making sure it harnessed the full potential of the powerful material his ancient race used, Victide.
After a while, Celestia and Andrew started cooking, which was no more than some cooked slime (which they had found was edible, and somewhat tasty), berries, and some water in a wulfrum container.
- Really? This, again? We’ve been eating the same thing for the past days, man -Colt complained
- Well, there’s not really much to cook, but if you wanna venture into the woods and find us something, you’re welcome to do so -Andrew said while serving more on Jack’s plate, who had already rampaged through half of his slime
- No thanks, I’d rather eat this, then...
- Uhm, when are we leaving? -Alex said while sitting on the ground
- Leaving? Damn! I forgot! -Jack reached for his backpack, where the beacon was located- Ok, it’s still there. Whatever it is, it’s moved a bit. We’ll leave once we’re done eating I guess
- I’m okay with that, I’ve almost finished my armor -Colt said as he reached for the chestplate before putting it on -How do I look?
- Terrific -Said Jack, unimpressed
- If the cycle is truly repeating once again, then we need to hurry with this thing -The Tyrant was standing next to a small box with a screen
- Lord, the harvesting technology is unlike anything I’ve ever made. It’s possible, but it’ll take a long time -Draedon was sitting on his chair, typing on his terminal. Both of them were deep underground, surrounded by miles of snow and ice
- We may never have another opportunity like this. What materials do you need?
- The ship is completely destroyed and abandoned, but…
- But what?
- Three or four teracycles I left, remember?
- Yeah, to get more Cosmilite, right?
- Yes, I left a station at Sanctuary, and there’s a ship ready on my lab, I could go to the station, dismantle it, and use those materials
- Good, get there as quickly as possible
- Sure thing, my lord
- I should’ve let you guys go on your own… -Alex was panting, urging for a place to rest. They had been walking for several hours, guiding themselves on Jack’s map, which helped them go around the more dangerous and uncharted areas. If Jack’s calculations were right, they were less than 15 minutes away from the coast.
During that time, it gave them all plenty of time to practice with their new abilities, including one Amidias didn’t tell Colt, one which allowed his armor to glide using the small wings on the back the Sea King insisted on putting there. Jack also practiced his jump mid air, and Alex practiced more spells and techniques.
Once they crossed the sudden limits of the forest, they found themselves on a bright beach, with palms ever so often. The only thing that was completely out of place was a small rectangular shack, shining with green metal, similar to the one on Jack’s armor. They all rushed to it. It had a cloth curtain in place of a door. Once inside, they were greeted by an almost empty room, except for a table, a door, and a bunch of scrap and tools. A small, shadowy figure was sitting on a chair facing them backwards.
- Uh… hello? -Jack said
- Huh?! What? -It turned around to see them- Who are you? -It looked humanoid, but was way smaller, and looked metallic- I swear to god, if you’ve come here to threaten my master again, I’ll call all of his army, they will all wreck you!
- What? Who are you? -Alex was confused, yet intrigued- ...or rather, what?...
- First tell me, what are you doing here? -It had very thin legs and arms, it was made of teh same material as the house, Jack’s armor, and the robots they had been finding, it’s face had a single, green eye, and some sort of shape resembling hair on top of his head
- We… we were following a beacon… It led us here, now, what are you?
- I’m John’s assistant
- Who? Who’s John? And uhm, where is he? -Colt said while digging through the heap of scrap
- He’s out fishing, and it’d be better if you…
- Woah! What is this? -An old voice came from behind the group- Who are you?
- Oh, damn, is that him? -Colt said while looking at the robot assistant
- We are, uh, we are humans, I’m Jack, he’s Alex, and he’s Colt
- Hmm, so… you’re real? -Said John. He was carrying a piece of mangled metal. His shining mechanical arm was also made of that same material -It’s been so long. My… my name is John Wulfrum. I’ve been here for… quite a while. What about you? Did you come in the Resonance?
- The what?
- Oh boy. There’s a lot to talk about. Please, sit -The man went into a room behind the door, and a few seconds later he came out with several wulfrum instruments, and what looked to be tea on one of them- First of all, who are you, and how did you get here?
- Well, we were on the ship, the Terraria, it crashed here, and…
- What? When was that?
- A few days ago, maybe a week or two. Why? How did you get here?
- I was sent on the Resonance, a scouting ship, I too, crashed here. Or so I thought… I’ve been here for about 40 years, and only recently did I decide to check the ship’s data logs. Turns out it wasn’t accidental, the pilot lead us here, and made it look like a crash. The crew then had to survive. They all died, one by one, diseases, creatures, accidents, illnesses. I’m the only one left…
- The Resonance? Who sent you here?
- NASA, why? Don’t you know about the Resonance? They should’ve told you about it… Unless… Unless they covered it up. Why wouldn’t they, after all. Was your Terrarium thing said to be the first one to go to space?
- Yeah, why?
- Those bastards. They covered it up, they’ve forgotten about me. It’s no coincidence that you too landed here
- What, NASA? Why would they want to come here?
- I had been working with them since I was 17, I had made some of the biggest, untold discoveries in the world. I built a sort of robotic spaceship that could go to different planets and explore them. We discovered a black hole of sorts, and the ship was pulled into it. The first planet on the other side was this. The ship found several minerals and ores before the project was shut down, apparently the ship had crashed, but I built the damn thing, it couldn’t have had crashed, not like that. Some time after that, I was selected as the candidate for the first ever interstellar travel mission, and, well, I ended up here
- So… if they’ve left you here, there’s no reason to believe they won’t do the same for us then
- I’m afraid so. I’ve made some experiments in my time here. I’ve discovered, or rather, created a new material, I’ve named it Wulfrum, in honor of the last human alive on space. Or, at least he was when I named it. It’s a super versatile alloy, I based its chemical design on an existing material here, it was uhm, Victo… Vic…
- Victide? That’s what Alex’s armor is made of, I think mine too.
- Hmm. It appears your armor is made of my robots, isn’t that right? -John pointed at Jack’s chest while walking towards a small box on the ground with a key on his hand
- Uh, yeah, sorry
- It’s alright -He put the key on the box and turned it, which revealed a small seat with threads to the sides resembling a small tank- but if you’re already set on surviving on this harsh land, then I will give you the materials and resources required to do so. But first… -He turned on the tank- You must beat me!

2021.10.26 01:04 MrPuffBall “Beware the scorched tree, it’s branches slender, it’s face split in three with its tender roots ever so free, for it hold secrets and lies, for it is pre-cut and yet is still alive.” The Mourning Wood and it’s stand, [Pumpkin Moon]
Stand: [Pumpkin Moon]
“User”: Morning Wood
Namesake: Pumpkin Moon from the Terraria OST and the Mourning Wood, also from Terraria
Localised names: [Tainted Food] and Liquor Roots
Appearance:
Mourning Wood is an oddly dark tree found in a desolate field, being the only life there, all other organic beings seemingly avoiding the area with no intention of persisting there. It’s branches are always barren of leaves and adorned in thorns, and a seemingly evil face has been cut into its trunk terribly, with gnashing teeth and sunken eyes. Two sloped and broken branches feel the ground, their shadow sometimes tricking the eyes, making it seem as if they were fragile arms, almost reaching out for you. It is said, that in October, it’s couloir grows darker and grows tainted with purple in till Halloween night, where it’s branches catch a blaze and it’s eyes come to life.
—STAND—
Ability:
[ Welcome the Pumpkin Moon]:
On Halloween night, the tree seemingly comes to life with a firefly spirit, as it’s roots catch on fire and it’s face comes alight. Only then can [Pumpkin Moon] be brought to life.
[The Raven’s]
Based on Edgar Allen Poe’s book, the Raven
From the flames summoned atop the trees fiery head, a flock of ravens emerge, coated still in the orange hues of flames. Around 20 of them perch atop Mourning Wood, peering down at whoever comes near them, their fiery eyes idly cold and sad. Acting similar to an automatic stand, they will fly off of Mourning Wood and land around them, onto fields, rocks, streets and buildings and anything else nearby, causing devastating flames to emerge wherever they landed. These flames will spread on any surface, no matter its material or form, the only exception being gasses, and they will not stop spreading until a person nearby to the flame commits to a sin they have done and have kept in secret, if this is achieved, the flame will retreat back to the Raven what will dissipate back into the Morning Wood’s own fires. The same effect can be achieved by sacrificing someone to the flames, what will cause the fire to retreat once more.
[Hanged Men]:
Based on the children’s game of Hang Man
Appearing from the flames, nooses dangle from high up branches, dangling wet and cold bodies, their form eerily similar to humans, but twisted and corrupted, parts seeming obtuse or rotten. Their bodies drip water onto the surface they are above that spreads faster than the water drops. Spreading out from the centre of Mourning Wood. The two bodies, hanging ever side of the trees face will appear in the water and will try and drag any living human under the water as if it was deeper that it could possibly be, passing everything else as if it was an inch deep. Anything dragged under water can only escape if they correctly answer the bodies question, familiar to do so will keep them under until they drown or are physically killed by the hangers bodies. Any attempt to escape by swimming back up to the surface without answering the question will result in the surface tension of the water being so extremely high that it is impossible to break through.
[Mourning Wood]:
On Halloween, the old tainted Tree seemingly comes to life, with its disfigured carvings being squeezed into familiar forms to mimic facial movements, the tree is also known to on occasion speak to anyone who manages to get close to it, where it will talk to their person for a time before a new noose appeared from the flames, this noose will forcibly be slipped round their neck as its limp tension is tightened, raising the person into the air as their life is sucked from them. As their life is drained, the bodies are not left with us, but are rather taken into the flames, where they are seemingly lost forever.
—Backstory—
Once, a beautiful willow tree stood in the centre of a farming town, its leaves seemingly never withering to the weather, instead always gleaming in their perfect green. It was the pride of the town, a sign of the prowess they withheld since their home was founded in the great move over to the Great Plains, where their ancient ancestors worked hand and nail to create paradise.
It was said that is was planted by the first American to ever lay their eyes on the plains, gifted to them by the Native Americans as a gift, a sign of goodwill and compassion between the two people. And around that sapling, their home was made, starting out as mud to later be erected as wood and stone. Many a family moved there, hearing that their land was the most fertile, being able to grow three times the amount of crops anywhere else. They were proud of this, as were willing to tell everyone of it, it brought more people to their land and they eventually became a prime area for trading goods.
The town was prospering, in till one day, where an elderly man saw that their haul was not as it used to be, they looked down at their crop to see that it was only two times as much. The people of the town now to be called Willow Wood were shocked by such a low haul, but he was not the last, as two other families as well only gained two times as much, not the usual three times. They demanded answered from the mayor who could supply none, “how could it only be two times as much?” He said, “nothings changed.”
Fear broke out between townsfolk, they started talk of what would happen if their hallucinations was reduced as well to only two times as much, how could they continue living on? But fear turned to speculation, as the people of Willow Wood looked for a solution. One man piped up one day to a group of his friends about a couple that moved in a half year ago, they were new and were far different to the rest of them, but they saw that as cultural differences, from being part of the other areas longer than heR, but the man talked about the woman’s intelligence, talking of how she had become the man of the house. Many of the people gasped at the idea, but still they didn’t see why this would cause the minimal hauls of produce, but the man continued, talking of the weird things she did, from doing hard labour while the man helped with cooking and how she looked too young for her age.
Eventually, someone in the room talked of magic. The room hung deadly silent till another man agreed, they were odd, but not only them, a woman in the room talked about a lady she had met who spoke far too rudely for herself, another talked about a young girl who had attacked his son, and then they had come to a decision. The crops had been less than promising not to their own faults, but by the use of witchcraft. Many in the room agreed in murmurs, it would make sense why the crops were worse this year, the witches were using this land for their own benefits, using the great willow tree as substance for their demonic rituals.
One October night, as many were tucked into their bed sheets, flames flickers outside of windows as a mob grew in the streets. And, as a bell chimed, doors were broken down as homes were set a blaze, as children and wives were stripped from their family and taken to the tree as slaves. As many screamed in anguish, overs roared and cheered in victory as they saw them strapped to the tree by their necks. Families came outside to see the fire roar viciously in the night, as the screams of the innocent fell on mostly death ears. The gurgled breaths of those drowned in water as the rest were silenced by a lack of air.
The next day, everyone sung in praises as their problems were now fixed, the witches were dead, and now the town could prosper. Many left the town, those who lost their loved ones took their leave, broken and destroyed, while others were found dead, the believed last causes of witchcraft, killing their controlled mates.
For one whole year, the town returned to normal, the food returned to its usual amount, and everyone was happy. But, when October came, the food in the fields began to rot, many seeing their crops one day flourishing now brittle and dry, only to be caught aflame by the heat. Many saw the pristine water grown tainted and dirty with mud. And as the days passed, it only got worse. And, on the final day of the month, everything was gone, all their rationed food, all of their water now too taint to drink, many had already fallen ill, and some had already passed on.
And that night, the mayor came to the Willow Tree, the last living thing other than the people who still wallowed in its proximity, and asked for its forgiveness, he asked what they could do to save their town.
But as he spoke, he felt something land on his head, he reached for it, and in his hand he saw a leaf. His eyes widened in fear as he looked up to the willow to see hundreds more being relived of their duty as they tumbled down in the wind.
Many didint speak, as fear consumed them whole, as that was not the end, as the Willows majestic bark rotted in front of them, leaving a bewitched black skin.
The mayor looked up to see a face that had grown from the fallen bark, it’s smile twisted.
He lowered his head in disgust and horror.
He dared not look at it again as it spoke.
…
One day, a trader was following his usual path to Willow Wood, he came every June, transporting good around the budding America for his own gain. But he was seemingly lost, for the path felt longer than it ever had, as he could not picture Willow Wood anywhere on his path. He continued on till he finally reached something new, he was certainly lost now, he could have sworn in his mother life that he had never viewed such a dead tree. It’s bark scorched, it’s branches torn and a right demonic face in its centre. The trader wondered on what he should do, but as he did he saw something that lingered on the path. A small and burnt sign. All it read was-
“Willow Wood.”
Thank you for reading, of Mourning Wood is to win the theme of Halloween, I wouldn’t mind the flair of [Pumpkin Moon]. I would also like the next weeks theme to be Shattered stands.

2021.08.19 04:31 Craloye Terraria : where the Sun Rises in the West and Set in the East
Terrarians may notice a interesting fact in Terraria : the Sun Rises in the West and Set in the East. you might tell me Terraria laws differ from the usual, in Terraria the Left is East, the Right is West. But there is a accessary named Compass in Terraria, and it reveals the Left is West and the Right is East.

2021.06.13 01:41 Swirlyfish M(19) I have no idea how to title theses anymore <( ̄︶ ̄)>
My Name is Alex, and came here to find a new friend :>, the only requirement you need is to be nice and patient. I do not care about anything else.
I'm from middle Tennessee in the United States, my time zone is Central Daylight Time (or Central Standard Time), I work at a factory every weekday (every other Saturday) from 4:45 AM to 3:30 or 5:30 PM, I'm most usually active at night.
My social media thingies are Discord, Instagram, Telegram, Snapchat, and Tumblr. I'm not sure if tumblr is great for communicating there you go. My most preferred one is Discord: ꌚሠⅈℛ꒒ℽ ℱɨនℍ#9549
I’ll try my best to be the nicest and most positive I can be even though i'm not very positive towards myself. I like listening or watching a good story every now and then, regardless of what form, though my favorite form is animation. I even plan to read some plays and mythology stuff after being given a list of those. I like to learn about about mythologies, folklore, and religions. Nature, Space, and other natural sciences are things that I absolutely love learning about. In particular, stuff about paleo life. I do several art things, and plan to master animation and screenwriting one day. But as for now the only thing i'm good at is Traditional drawing. I plan to start painting, animating, and a attempt at screen writing once i finnish the books i have for them. I'm planning to do watercolor, clay modeling, writing (other forms), and a little bit of photography in the much later future.
I was raised a Jehovah’s Witness (not one now) and was raised around people who didn't speak the same language as me. Because of that, i'm simply not a very interesting person to talk to. But i'll try my best to keep conversations from getting dry and if the friendship gets far enough I’ll make sure you get every single inch of my love and compassion. I do not care long it takes for you to respond, as long as you do. Hell you can reply whenever you like, even when i haven't answered yet. Its rare, but sometimes it’ll take me awhile to reply or even notice a message. Don't hesitate to text again if it's taking me awhile. Share your ideals, culture, beliefs, art (mostly your art plz :3), and emotions if you want. Even when i have nothing to say back, i find them interesting, though please don't overload my small brain with TOO much information all at once lol. Also Don’t be afraid to correct whatever stupid shit I do or say.
Multiplayer Games I Own:
Minecraft: Bedrock and Java
On Steam: Among Us, Beasts of Bermuda, Don’t Starve Together, Every Single Doom Game , Garry’s Mod, A Few Half Life Games, Halo: Master Chief Collection, The Isle, Just Shapes & Beats, Left 4 Dead 1 & 2, Portal 2, Rec Room, Stardew Valley, Terraria, VRchat
On Epic Games: Genshin Impact
I hope you all have a amazing pride month and lots of love ♡(ӦvӦ。)
