Hello everyone! I am ready to purchase my next violin, and I am looking at spending something around 10-15 kEUR. Unfortunately my professor lives 2000 Km away, so I will have to choose alone or, at best, to just send a recording. I have two questions for you: - What do you usually play to evaluate the sound potential new violin? What parameters should I use to evaluate the sound?
- How do you evaluate the sound of a violin just from a recording? I have been at a shop and tried some violins, that to my hear sounded completely different from each other. I recorded my trials because I wanted to show to my teacher, but the recording were quite disappointing, as all the three violins sounded (almost) the same! I even tried to use one website where they provide recordings of different violins at different price points (Amorim fine violins) but I really have difficulties in uderstanding the difference in sound from a 5 kEUR to a 40 kEUR violin (in the recording, in real life it's ok). I've been in quite a dilemma for the past 2 years doing self enquiry. I feel there are two schools of thought on how to self enquire.
School 1: Surrender yourself completely and just self-enquire
This idea is that basically since most of your actions are pre-determined and even if we had free will to desire things it is quite pointless. Therefore forget about the worries of the world and just self-enquire. This includes even the effort and desire for sitting meditation practices. Cause some days it will be out of your control to make that happen. So if formal meditation sessions come, great that's what you needed if not that's also great. As long as you aren't hurting people, eating vegetarian food (to me is a requirement) then by all means let life happen as it needs to, but be self attentive.
The Pros: •You really do feel the bliss of surrender • Get to truly dis-identify with your life. •You get to not reject your humanity as much and build an ego of a formal meditator. When friends ask to hang out you don't have to say no etc.
The cons: •If I don't plan my formal sessions, I do find that my self enquiry can wane and suffer. •Busy days can really make my practice suffer without a formal session •Just allowing myself to do as my body pleases will lead to distracting activities like movies, video games and social media. Which can really harm my practice. •Over time the more I let my discipline and desire to control go, this can lead to ego coming back feeling like I'm not doing good, which leads to desire to control and repeat.
School 2: In your free time you should avoid all distractions and self enquire formally, read spiritual texts and avoid distracting stimulus. While in the world also self-enquire.
I suppose this is the more ascetic way of practicing self-enquiry. But it is also the more non-bs way of self-enquiry. We can lie to ourselves that while binge watching Netflix that we had progress greatly in self-enquiry. But if we just sit down for 4 hours and self-enquire you definitely feel a change or flow with the Self immediately. And also avoiding distracting stimulus on a superficial level makes your life seems more pure.
The Pros: •You see more immediate impact of your self-enquiry practice •Can't bullshit yourself that while partaking in sensual desires your being spiritual •The self-enquiry in day to day life becomes a lot easier after a good formal session •Feels like your progressing
The cons: •You start building an ego that you are a formal meditator •You avoid life sometimes •Sometimes you will use to mind to force yourself to meditate more which could've been time self-enquiring •Life becomes conditional and dualistic, cause if you fail to put priority on formal practice that = bad
Free will in conflict with these schools:
On top of this indecision I feel like my ideas of free will are in conflict with these schools. I believe that for the most part we don't control our outward outcome. Therefore the first school makes the most sense. At the same time, I don't want to give up the possibility I can make changes and also want to do the second school. Such confusion.
Conclusion: Writing this out I'm starting to see maybe it's a possibility that I have no free will and that my body will switch around from these two schools constantly and that's all great for my spiritual progress. Nonetheless I still don't have a strong affirmation on which of these two ways of life I should commit to. It does build up a lot of frustration and feels like time wasted.
I definitely think the first option is what enlightened beings and more advanced spiritual practitioners do. Because for them what difference does it make to be in formal practice or watching tv, they are always fully with the Self. But I sometimes feel like I'm bsing myself that I'm that advanced to just let my life go as it wants and attend to the Self.
Any experience and comments would be highly appreciated. Bless you.

Okay, first off, I will preface this by saying that I am not Brazilian, and I am simply searching for recordings of what I will discuss for archival purposes, and to amuse myself with footage of the work of Vídeo Brinquedo being on TV. Uh, anyways...
CONTEXT:
On June 6th, 2009, the show "Escola de Princesinhas" premiered on the Brazilian children's network, TV Rá Tim Bum. The show would first air on Saturdays and Sundays at 6:30 AM, 1:35 PM, 8 PM, and 12:30 AM. Later on, on September 5, 2009, "Abelhinhas" premiered on the channel. Now, there seem to be conflicting reports that I could find of the show's timeslot, but I'll just go with the one stated via an archive of the show's page on TV Rá Tim Bum's website dated July 26th, 2010, airing on Saturdays and Sundays at 1:30 PM. Finally, on January 2, 2010, "Os Carrinhos" premiered, being the final of Vídeo Brinquedo's works to premiere on the channel. The show would start airing on Thursdays and Fridays at 1:30 PM and 7:30 PM, and Saturdays and Sundays at 9:30 AM, 2:45 PM, and 7:30 PM. And based on what I could find, "Os Carrinhos" and "Escola de Princesinhas" seemed to have stopped airing on the channel around July 2011. "Abelhinhas" seems to have stopped airing around October 2010.
Later on, sometime in, what I could find, December 2014, the shows would return to television, airing on another Brazilian TV channel, RedeTV, via its now defunct TV Kids block. This came after the block had been revived and underwent drastic changes, now aiming for a preschool audience. The shows would air until the block ceased again in February 2015, I guess. The block would continue airing until 2018.
WHAT I SEEK TO FIND:
Now, what I seek to find isn't the contents of these shows. No, they're readily available on DVD in Brazil, where they were released as sequel films, quite a few of them having released before they made their debuts on TV. The 24 "Os Carrinhos" episodes were released as 7 DVD sequels to the original film, 4 of them having 3 episodes, 3 of them having 4 episodes, with a bonus collector's edition DVD being released that not only contained several episodes from previous releases, but it also contained a seemingly new episode, "O Trator Monstro", therefore totaling to 25 episodes actually, "Abelhinhas" had its 9 episodes spread across 3 DVDs, all 3 of them having 3 episodes, and "Escola de Princesinhas" had 5 total DVDs, each DVD having 3 episodes, totaling to 15. The "Os Carrinhos" sequels were also released in the US, along with just the first "Escola de Princesinhas" DVD. There also exists an English language cover of the first "Abelhinhas" sequel DVD, but outside of that, I can't find any info on its episodes being dubbed in English (I just haven't investiagted yet.)
They're also readily available on YouTube in Portuguese, via the Crianças Inteligentes channel (except for the "Os Carrinhos" episodes "O Carrinho da Páscoa", "Se Eu Fosse Ocê", "O Circo", "A Turma na Fazenda", and the title card for the episode "O Pintor" is for some reason cut out.)

I rarely post, but I feel like an outsiders perspective may be useful. Lately I have been feeling like my parents are just way too involved in my life. Every decision I make seems to be like theirs too. I am 25, live at home, have a good well paying job. I'm single and just returned from working abroad, so I thought I could happily live at home until I wanted to move out / got in a relationship. My parents are rich and very supportive, but at what point do I need to go on my own? They are always trying to make professional connections for me and urging me not to move far away or do things that I would consider spontaneous. I have a lot of money saved up becuase I am frugal, but I kind of hate when my dad offers me money. I mean, how much time can you really spend with your parents? I love saving costs by living at home, but I kind of want to move out. It's like, why though? I'm scared of having a mean roomate or living alone and being very lonely.
They are holding on to a bunch of furniture for me for when I move out, but I hate the idea of them having to help me move in and stuff. I just want to be on my own. I love my parents, but my dad constantly trying to hang with me every night is a lot, as we have ideologically grown apart recently, and I can't really be myself around him anymore. I don't want to go to the beach house with them every weekend. Don't they get that you can only spend so much time with your parents before it feels forced? I just want the freedom to do things without them knowing. I guess the best solution is to move out. This is mostly me just talking to myself so sorry for the rant. Just can't handle the Christian stuff all the time and the little remarks about my career path, and always expecting me to sit down and eat with them and watch movies all the time. I'm not "wandering off", I just don't really want to watch some show with you right now.
On the other hand, I get very very lonely when I am alone. I don't really have many people anymore besides them. I'm just tired of being connected to my father and having all these premeditated expectations of me. I don't care about making much money, getting a house, keeping family furniture, making professional connections. Guess I just need to move out, I've just grown into an anxious and semi neurotic person and am afraid that I would move into a place of tension. Some of my favorite characters are obviously batman and superman, and all of their extended cast, I love the titans and the doom patrol, and I am also very much open to meeting new characters that I haven’t met from the movies and shows if they’re really good, and finally from what I’ve seen I do prefer it if they’re relatively more recent ones, like at least from this last decade. Usually skews pretty caucasian. We get lots of walkups from the middle/older age crowd. Increase/decrease from Saturday: TLM: +12.78% Guardians: +44% Fast X: - 72.73% About My Father: -50% The Machine: -33% You Hurt My Feelings: - 100% Little Mermaid is doing great here! Theaters are filling up closer to showtimes and we have huge groups of families and kids. I've heard a lot of people humming Under the sea when they came out of the theater lol. Guardians is also still doing amazing. Most Marvel movies do very well here but I'm still very surprised with the amount of tickets still being sold. Fast X sorta flopped big time even last weekend there were a few showings with like 3 people in them. I added in the Spiderverse presales bc i thought it would be interesting to look at. We only have 3 showings on thursday available right now but they are selling well. Again though, marvel movies do great here. |
