2023.05.31 17:23 Ascerta How I got decent thermals with low fan noise on my gaming laptop
| Preface : I enjoy gaming. I love my gaming laptop and I'll never go back to the bulkier desktop PC. I have a family at home that used to complain about the jet engine that is my laptop under long gaming hours, especially at night. I took it into consideration and had to something. My goal : Being able to play with a target FPS of 80 (capped) on any games (on high graphic settings), with decent thermals (for a gaming laptop) and with low fan noise. My specs : HP Omen 15-en1037nf Gaming Laptop - Nvidia RTX 3070m
- AMD Ryzen 7 5800H (3,2 GHz / 4,4 GHz with boost)
- 16 GB RAM
- NVME SSDs
- I play on an CHG90 ultrawide monitor with a resolution of 3840*1080 (more than 4 millions pixels to render)
The results : Star Wars Battlefront 2 Chivalry 2 How to : First off, the gaming laptop has to be cleaned out of dust and pasted accordingly. 1) The CPU As you may know, the CPU is the biggest culprit in terms of heat when it comes to gaming laptops. This Ryzen 7 5800H chip cannot be undervolted. Though it is a very powerful CPU, with somewhat agressive performance with a 105°C max temperature limit. Disabling the Turbo Boost I figured I don't need all this performance, I don't need to play my games at 144 FPS and all the inconveniences that come with it, so I disabled the Turbo Boost via a regedit (CPU will be maxed at its 3,2 GHz base clock). Yes, I know many of you are against it, but I firmly believe there is no point in having such a powerful CPU if you cannot cool it efficiently. The extra performance added by the Turbo is not a lot compared, especially in games that relies more the GPU, however it adds a lot of extra heat. Downloading Ryzen Controller Ryzen Controller is a downloadable app for AMD CPUs. I will only be using the setting "Temperature Limit" and set it to 79°C max for the CPU. Therefore, whenever the CPU reaches this temperature, the application will automatically lower the base clock of the CPU. This is important, because without this app, the CPU will rely on the fans to spin more RPMs instead, that we don't want. You can create a custom preset for this and set it to activate every time the app launches at startup. Ryzen Controller App 2) The Fans Damn they can be noisy. We have to keep them quiet. There are many apps to control them, but I'll be using the default OMEN Gaming Hub. Power Mode is set on "Balanced". Thermal Controls are set on "Manual". The CPU never goes above 80°C in general with turbo boost off and Ryzen Controller activated. I don't want the fans to go higher than 53% which is roughly 3100 RPMs or 38 Decibels (I used my smartphone so it may not be 100% accurate). Above this RPM value, the fans would spin too much to my liking. Though we'll keep one last dot at 90°C to spin the fans at 100% should anything happen, just in case. CPU Fans Regarding the GPU, it never goes above 75°C in general, so we'll set the max fan speed at 50% for 75°C. Anything beyond that, just like the CPU, is just in case. CPU Fans 3) The GPU In order to smoothen the experience, we're going in the Nvidia Geforce Experience app and turn on the " Whisper Mode" setting. Then, go into the Nvidia Controller Panel and set the max framerate to your liking (my target is 80 FPS) for each individual games. Whisper Mode in NVCP Conclusion I've already posted the screenshot results above and I am very pleased with them. - The laptop makes very little noise (max 38 Db if my smartphone is accurate enough), it's comparable to a properly cooled desktop PC.
- The thermals are decent : from 70°C to 80°C during gaming (could be lowered to the 60°C with "Auto" fan management at the cost of noise). From 40 to 55°C during work/internet.
- Games are fluid and smooth, 80 FPS capped is a sweet spot for my 3840*1080 resolution and don't feel like I lost a lot in performance.
Having an almost silent laptop while retaining most of the performance and keeping thermals low is very satisfying. Please comment on what you think about this, or if you have any tips to give. submitted by Ascerta to GamingLaptops [link] [comments] |

2023.05.31 17:10 __skrap__ AM4 Video Card Upgrade - 1440p @ 240Hz, 5800x3D, 750W Power Supply
I'd appreciate help with a video card upgrade for my AM4 system. I've included the pcpartpicker list of my build as it is today. I mainly play Warzone 2. I'm more interested in higher FPS than ultra settings. I'd rather not upgrade my power supply (or anything other than the graphics card).
Price - I'd like to be around $600 would spend up to $850ish if it is worth it to match my system well for maximum 1440p performance.
Thank you for your help.

2023.05.31 17:04 trishia42 Asus Strix G18 2023 vs Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 8 2023
Looking to finally upgrade my laptop after quite a few years. I mainly use my laptop for non-gaming purposes such as 3D design (Fusion 360, Blender) and some graphic editing with Photoshop and Illustrator - both for non-professional use - but I also like to occasionally do some gaming; I get into Tomb Raider every few months, and if I had a decent laptop, I'd like to try and get into other games as well. Nothing too crazy but because I tend to keep my laptops just about forever, I like to buy a little higher than what I need so it will most likely last me longer. This is pretty much a desktop replacement as I do not have an office or room for a docking station, so it's essentially used on the coffee, dining table or on my lap on a pad.
One of my requirements was a numerical keypad, so that cut quite a few options out and I eventually had settled on the Asus Strix G17 2023. But then I dropped by at Best Buy and once I started looking at 16:9
vs 16:10, I realized I highly preferred the 16:10 aspect ratio for the larger displays. So now I am considering the
Asus Strix G18 2023 (G814) or the
Legion Pro 7i Gen 8 2023. Below are the main details of the only currently available G814 configuration in Canada (would have actually preferred a lesser video card for less $), and a similar option for the Legion Pro 7i;
| Asus Strix G18 2023 | Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 8 |
| G814JI-BS91-CB | Custom from 82WRCTO1WWCA1 |
| | |
Processor | Intel i9-13980HX | Intel i9-13900HX |
Memory | 32 GB DDR5 4800 | 32 GB DDR5 5600 |
Graphics | RTX 4070 | RTX 4070 |
Storage | 1 TB SSD | 1 TB SSD |
Display | 18", 2560 x 1600, IPS, 500 nits, 240 MHz | 16", 2560 x 1600, IPS, 500 nits, 240 Hz |
I was able to see the Asus in person, but not the Legion (they can only be ordered directly from Lenovo here). I was blown away by the gorgeous 18" screen - the colours and the amount of real estate to work with is absolutely fantastic (multitasking, multiple windows, panels, etc.), especially when I compared it next to another laptop there that had the same screen size/specs as the Legion 16". I did find the keyboard layout a little odd with what seems to be more space than usual in-between the keys (?), as well as smaller keys for the numerical keypad - might just need some getting used to. Also not sure if it was only the display model but the hinges seemed tight and I found I needed two hands to open the laptop by using thicker points on the thin bezel else it was putting pressure on the screen at those points. It's definitely large and pretty heavy at 6.61 lbs, but the Legion is also 6.17 lbs.
I am a bit worried about all the reports concerning coil whine; although I could hear no audible noise coming from the laptop while using it in the store, I was able to hear a low sound when putting my ear almost right against the keyboard (which sounded like coil whine I think?). At that volume, I would not notice it, but I am unsure if this would be an issue during more extensive load or if it would be covered up by the fans. It doesn't help that most reports seem to be with the 4080/4090 cards and also that some people report it went away after a few weeks or after a BIOS update.
The Legion design looks nice online, but obviously it's not the same as seeing it in person so I don't have the ability to notice all the little things like I did about the Strix (I'm sure there would be some as well). I do like the less "gamerish" look of it, and it would be somewhat more portable due to the smaller dimensions - although people complain the design is not as good as last year's? I know there has also been some reports on the Gen 8 of CPU overheating and loud fans as well.
The price difference currently is about $50 CAD more for the Strix (so like 37$ in USD).
Not sure if anyone has had experience with these two models (or very similar), but if so I would definitely like to hear your thoughts because I am completely undecided. Thanks for reading this far if you did!

2023.05.31 17:01 atomic_winter Which GPU for my build? 7900xt or 7600xt?
I've been slowly upgrading my PC, and getting to the point I'm ready for a new GPU. I was previously set on the 7900xt, but now the 7600 has dropped I'm wondering if it would be better for my use case on a performance per £ basis..
Specs: Msi b550 gaming plus 32gb hyperX fury ddr 4 3200mhz 650w generic psu (upgrading to at least 850 modular, dependant on gpu) Evo970 1tb m.2 (boot drive)
Amd ryzen 5 2500x Nvidia Rtx 2060
The cpu I am going to upgrade to a 5800x3d Gpu is where I'm wondering about. I mostly use my PC for gaming, I occasionally stream and I use virtual desktop for remote VR using quest2. My build has been solid until now and not noticing any huge issues, except when I'm trying to game record when I'm playing. I get stuttering and the video quality is nowhere near as good as it was and I'm getting a lot of encoding errors at anything above 1080p recording in OBS.
I do some 3d design work as well so I need something that can handle decent rendering.
I only have a two- QHD acer monitor setup, but want the flexibility to upgrade this to an ultra wide later, as I do a LOT of in game photography art (heavy filtering and overlays etc)
Don't mind upgrading the psu above 850 if it's required either, I just haven't yet, because I don't wanna buy something that's not powerful enough for the GPU.
Obviously the 7900 sounds better on paper but if I won't use it to the full capabilities, it seems silly to justify the extra £500 in price difference.

2023.05.31 16:26 GxesanPY GPU Starts to Crash on boot and while gaming
Hi guys its been 3 years I think? since I built my custom PC. So obviously the specs are a bit outdated but honestly for games like league of legends, valorant, and black desert online at medium settings it does really well. It has:
- Intel I7 - 9700K
- 32GB G.Skill trident RGB Ram at 3200MHZ (ddr4) - RTX 2060 super
-Samsung EVO 970 plus SSD - Corsair H100i water cooler - Asus z390-e motherboard
When booting up the computer the onboard motherboard LED flashes white, indicating there is a VGA card (GPU) problem and while playing BDO it has crashed for twice straight. While playing my temperature is around 70 degrees which I think is fine so I personally don't know whats wrong. I've tried cleaning the PC and reinstalling both RAM and GPU as well. But as of right now I'm still thinking it was because I didn't replace my thermal paste for three years on both the CPU and GPU but the okay temperature says otherwise. Do any of you experts here have any idea?

2023.05.31 15:43 Notwalkin Darkness Falls A20 - DF-Large1-PEP - random chain stutters on dedicated server
| So i posted in the discord but quite often you get directed elsewhere, I'm mainly looking for other peoples experiences with DF A20 on the DF-Large1-PEP map. I don't care if you're getting perfect fps/stability on anything else, it needs to be on the DF-Large1-PEP map. So to be clear, I ran a server a few years back for a group of friends, running DF and it ran great - this was on the standard Navezgane map DF included at that time though. I host and run the game for myself on the same pc, again, i do this with many games and this was never an issue in the past for DF. - 9900k 4.8ghz
- DDR4 32gb (2x16) 3200mhz
- rtx 3070
- 1tb nvme which both game and server are on
First thing, one or two people commented saying RAM would be the issue for hosting client + server on the same pc, this isn't true. Ram is never above 90%, never struggling and when the issues happen, i've seen my ram usage on the entire pc under 60%. The issue Again, not played in a few years, so the game and mod itself has had many changes but we originally played DF Navezgane on normal servers, not dedicated, but was getting a lot of turning lag and all sorts, Tested that same world via me hosting dedicated and that lag was gone, we had higher fps too and the game was just smooth in turning. We made a new world/map, this being the Large1-PEP, fps is great even on high-ultra and then we ran into our first issue... Nearby our starting area/trader, who is a scientist lady refusing to speak to us unless we find eve, we entered a building and was met during our time in the building with completely random stutter lag. There were no server errors, FPS was not in the 10s, it was just like skipping frames. My normal fps is anywhere between 70-140 on 1440p, my friend on older hardware is at 1080p and gets around 70fps, we both experienced this awful tearing/stuttering in this house though, not the entire time in the house but it made combat very difficult. It also wasn't stutter that we both had at the exact same time, it was just in the area of the house, walking around, you would feel this lag. https://reddit.com/link/13wmpie/video/qp4rdteim73b1/player Video isn't super clear vs actual gameplay but, you can see if you look closely multiple stutters in short time, the fps on the side also tanks instantly and climbs back to normal. edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4yke3urY9U This has slightly better quality Again this isn't the usual 1 off stutter that 7 days gives you, for example opening inventory and getting that freeze, this is rapid continuous stuttering that only happens in some areas, such as the one i show in the video. Info on installation: The game was freshly installed from steam onto my nvme drive and i copied in the A20 DF download files, I copied that game and made a 2nd game with "Server" name in the title, i configured the server xml the server folder contained already, i found my maps in roaming/7days/saves and can see my "DFalls-Large1-PEP" there. I have opened ports for both me and my friend who's connecting to my server. If anyone has experience with the sort of stuttering shown in the video and mentioned here and has found a way to fix it, i would appreciate it if you could share it. Again, the server and game itself runs fine, it's these moments of stuttering that randomly occur in certain areas though, which i'm unsure if it's linked to the Large1-PEP map/buildings. submitted by Notwalkin to 7daystodie [link] [comments] |

2023.05.31 15:16 MestarOfMatel Alienware x14 vs Alienware m15r7 (same specs) vs ROG Zephyrus G14 ( 2022 6700s one)
Hello there! Recently, due to starting new studies, I've been spending more and more time at my university, frequent relocating made me want to upgrade from my soon to be 5 years old hp omen (1070 max q one). After doing some research and checking possible student discounts I decided to settle on either Alienware or ROG Zephyrus G14. I'm stuck between these three machines mentioned in the title:
X14 i7 12700h rtx 3060 16gb 1tb ssd - 1247£
M15R7 i7 12700h rtx 3060 16gb 512gb ssd - 1104£
ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 Ryzen 9 6900HS, 16GB 1TB Radeon RX 6700S - 1550$
Things I'm looking for are: ability to host multiple virtual machines while working/ studying, being able to play new games, portability as well as ability to plug in multiple devices (external display, mouse and keyboard) while at home. (No / very few thermal problems are a huge plus as well).
Could you guys recommend me which one would be a better choice in my situation?
Cheers!

2023.05.31 13:08 kris_lace We can hate on Nvidia all we want but their strategy is overwhelmingly working out for them, or is it?
Context
I've been following closely the hardware subs like nvida/hardware/pcgaming etc and the sentiment everywhere (even on
/nvidia) is that Nvidia are becoming more and more anti-consumer.
This is reflected in some of their technology rollouts (dlss), their marketing (4080/4070Ti, 4060Ti etc), disingenuous benchmarks and promises (8k.., over emphasising dlss3 numbers etc)
Nvidias PoV
Nvidia are continuting their large market share, their continuing their growth and profits and they're continuing their premium status in the GPU market. They've recently hit >1 trillion market cap and are doing well in their corporate markets. They're convinced they're bleeding edge on AI and they're just generally high on themselves.
For their consumer side; Nivida at least are convinced their features such as DLSS, AI frame gen, RTX etc are market leading software enhancements and actually a lot of consumer media agree on some of those points.
In the absolute worst case scenario where Nvidia get called out by media/consumers Nvidia can just afford to unrelease a graphics card and (fuck over their vendors in the process).
In short, things are working out perfectly for Nvidia
Consumer backlash
There's absolutely a genuine and real effort by the community to 'vote with their money' and make principled purchases.
Also as much as those of us here might know about GPU's and are generally tech savvy a chunk of consumers (and prebuilds) are people just buying into the marketing bullshit and not knowing for example that a 4060Ti is pointless to purchase. However, it might be fair to say as time is going on and having access to internet, people are finding it quite easy to research cards before they buy and we're potentially finding people are making more informed purchases too.
In any case we're seeing piles of 4070's rotting on the shelves and we're seeing stock just sit there and not move. We're also seeing a cultural shift to jump to AMD more too.
But it's too early to tell how much those things are actually impacting the market.
Current state
While there's a very real push back from the consumer market against the pricing and marketing of Nvidias consumer offerings Nvidia are in a very powerful position.
It's hard to say how impactful the consumer-push-back is. With the help of consumer-biased media like youtube tech reviews we have seen Nvidia make big changes e.g. Unreleasing the 4080.
I think ultimately we're RIGHT on the line of making a BIG difference but it's just hard to tell.
I think to conclude, as much as consumers making principled purchases at the end of the day, we preach Brand agnostic purchases. So buy the best thing for you and ignore the brand and while in some cases that means going AMD or Intel, it also means going Nivida sometimes too. While the consumer community will always be vocal and backlash and some people will turn away from Nvidia a good amount of consumers will simply buy the best product they can get for their money. At the end of the day we're talking about a real investment that will quite largely impact your QoL (if you game a lot) and is a big sum of money to people.
So I think the real next move isn't necessarily in the hands of the consumer, I think it is in the hands of Nvidias competition
AMD/Intel
There's rarely been a better time for AMD and Intel to come in and make a competant play. Consumers are acting in response to Nvidias anti-consumer bullshit. But really the actual power plays lay in the hands of AMD/Intel.
What frustrates me is that a lot of the time post-launch AMD (and somewhat) intel end up being a better value. But they never seem to launch with that in mind, they seem to try to get as high a initial price as they can and a lot of journalists have been calling to AMD to just fucking take the market share and undercut Nvidia - especially if that's what they end up doing 6m/1y + after releases anyway.
Addiitonally, while we've seen improvements from AMD in software that's mostly been getting a bad software suite 'good enough'. What we need from AMD is to actually thrive in the software side and make consistently better drivers but also stop taking a back-seat in technologies such as frame gen/dlss etc and proactively go and invest in something and push it forward.
Lastly a word on vendors, we've has some insight into the industry with the likes of EVGA's statements and we know from the unrelease of 4080 that tensions are tight. There is a play here in the vendor circle to reign in Nvidia a bit however, as Steve fro GN put it recently 'Nvidia are obsessed with Apple' and with their purchase or ARM there's signs Nvidia are hurdling torwards a closed ecosystem where they don't really care about vendors - they've already proven they can release a decent product stock (4080/90's) so very little power probably sits with vendors right now. Maybe if they all jumped ship and bundled with AMD then that might help boost the AMD vs Nvidia battle a bit but we're in the realms of wishful thinking here.
TL:DR Bunch of bullshhit, nvidia aren't too heavily incentivised to cave to conumer demands they're laughing the bank. Meanwhile while consumer backlash IS DEMONSTRABLY impactful (unrelease 4080) the main power in this time sits with AMD and Intel and it's high time they did something about it!

2023.05.31 13:01 MLDG124 is it normal for my Legion 5 Pro CPU to hit 90°C - 95°C while gaming
I have the Legion 5 pro 16ACH6H model, which has Ryzen 7, RTX 3070, and 16gb ram. While playing the Dead Space Remake, Msi afterburner shows that my CPU temp is hitting 90°C - 95°C, and GPU temp is averaging 70°C. My laptop is elevated using a book and does not cover the fans in the back, and I have hybrid mode off. thermal mode is set to Balance. In other games such as Red Dead Redemption 2 or Resident Evil 4 remake, the temperature does not typically exceed 90°C. No other applications are opened, and I am also in an air-conditioned room. is this normal? and what can I do to lessen the temp?

2023.05.31 12:16 ThePocGuy PC won't turn on when GPU is plugged in
Problem: The PC doesn't boot anymore with GPU installed but older GPU works.
The PC worked for 5 months with the new GPU. On the 26th of May, I got strange artifacting in the browser while I was watching YouTube. After that, the PC did not boot anymore and got an error code from the motherboard. The code was VGA, thus the GPU. I reseated the GPU and used canned air to spray in the PCIe slot. This did not work. After that, I tried to put it in a different slot, but it also did not work. I still had my older GPU laying around so I put it in and the PC worked. Thus, I put my GPU in a different PC to test it and the GPU worked. I did a stress test and it did not give any artifacting this was on a box and not inside a case. After this, I put the GPU back into my PC and plugged the GPU into a different PSU. This also did not work. After this I update the MB Bios it was already up to date with a CMOS reset. And i cleand the pins on the GPU with some isopropanol.
What I did:
- Reseating
- Cleaning pcie slot with air
- Different PCIe
- 1 Ram stick
- Different GPU that works
- GPU in different PC also works
- External PSU for the GPU
- Update MB Bios
- CMOS reset
- Cleaned GPU pins with alcohol
What I going to do:
- NVflash
- Change thermal paste and pads
- An keep praying
If there is any more suggestions I like to hear of them.

2023.05.31 11:38 Arsinityy Pc having random BSOD
So my PC after being built started having these random bsod errors. They can happen on my desktop or with just Firefox open. Or just discord. These are the errors I get at very random times: (The stared ones are the ones I get most often) Kernel security check failure * Driver irlq not less or equal * Driver overall stack buffer Irlq not less or equal Kmode exemption not handled * Unexpected kernel mode trap Atempet execute of no execute memory Attempted to write readonly memory Memory management Page fault in nonpage area
I've checked the temperature when playing games. I've reinstalled and reset everything (os,drivers). I've taken it in to a PC repair shop and they couldn't find anything wrong with the drivers or my hardware. I'm very frustrated and the errors keep piling up.

Corsair High Performance XTM50 CPU/GPU Thermal
These parts have come mainly from the Tech Notice Youtube channel from around 4 months ago so my question is are there now better parts I could swap any of these out for instead without a big jump in price? And is there anything I should definitely do to make sure I'm getting the best out of this? I.e. any bios changes (apart from enabling XMP) or Windows set up changes apart from the obvious power settings, Nvidia studio drivers and removing bloat.
I'm pretty set on Intel too incase anyone suggests Ryzen. I also want to use this mobo as the multiple M.2. and 10gbe built in is a big plus for me as we use 10gbe servers for the archive.
I really appreciate any feedback or things to consider as it's a bit cost for us and I don't want to have wasted any money anywhere. Thanks!
