2023.06.03 06:19 spicykibbles We got duped into signing a $38K contract with a dealership for the same car we had almost paid off in full.
Just like the title says, that's our family got basically duped into repurchasing the same car. We've consulted with a lawyer but have hit a dead end. By the way, this is in TX. Here's the story:
My brother bought a 2018 Toyota Camry in 2019 and had been paying it off himself. He had a cosigner but because the cosigner had bad credit (he was our only option), the interest rate on the car payments was around 18% and the car loan in total with interest rate ended up being $26,000. Here's where I need your help:
A few months ago, my brother reached $11,000 in remaining balance on the car after years of making $600 monthly payments. He was finally seeing the end of the tunnel and decided to refinance the car. Unfortunately, he was denied in over 12 banks because he's on a work visa. During a routine maintenance for the car at the dealership, he decided to ask about a refinance with the dealership (after consulting with a lawyer, we know this was our first mistake). He told them about the high interest rate and how the car had a balance of $11,000 and he just wanted to refinance to bring down the interest rate. The finance manager said that what he could do was buy the car from him and sell it back to him with a lower rate on the remaining balance of $11,000. Perfect so far. We went through the process of finding another bank to refinance, the dealership restocked the car, cleaned it, put paper plates, did a state inspection on it, and while it was getting ready, we were signing papers (second mistake). He signed a bunch of stuff and we were told we were going to get copies of everything (It took over two weeks to get those copies. We had to go in person to ask for them). Eventually, we finished and they told us that because of the work visa, he wasn't approved for the original 8% interest rate but that the best they could do was 14% interest rate with another bank. We knew there would be a catch along the way and we figured this was the catch. He signed and we left.
When he finally got the loan info from the new bank in the mail, it said remaining balance: $38,000. We were completely shocked so we went to the dealership and they didn't respond any questions, said they couldn't reverse anything, said no one forced us to sign anything, and told us that we couldn't refinance or trade the car in for another 6-12 months. The finance manager told us that it was a good thing because that way my brother could work on his credit and keep making payments. I argued that he wasted the last 3-4 years because they were worthless now and that it didn't make sense that he would pay $40,000 for a 2018 car. The guy shrugged and said there was nothing he could do. Another guy apologized and suggested that we sold the car online to pay off the debt.
We went to a lawyer and after reading through the papers my brother signed, he told my brother that unfortunately, he was stuck paying double for the same old car because he had signed that the power of attorney be changed back to the dealership on the car title and that was what made it legal. He suggested that we go to our county's District Attorney's office and file a formal complaint against the dealership but my brother is extremely bummed out and wants to forget about the car that once used to make him happy.
What should we do? I know we did everything wrong but I can't stand the thought of him paying $40,000 for a 2018 car given that he had already paid $15,000 on it for the last 3-4 years.

2023.06.03 06:11 autotldr Hong Kong artists mark Tiananmen crackdown quietly or overseas
This is the best tl;dr I could make,
original reduced by 78%. (I'm a bot)
Avant garde street performance, politically charged theatre, pro-democracy music and poetry - powerful works of art dealing with China's bloody Tiananmen Square crackdown that were once commonplace in Hong Kong have all but disappeared in recent years.
For decades, tens of thousands of people gathered annually in Hong Kong's Victoria Park for a candlelight vigil marking June 4, 1989, when Chinese troops moved into Beijing's Tiananmen Square to quell peaceful protests calling for reforms.
Any mention of the day - let alone commemoration - has long been forbidden in mainland China, but the massive turnout every year in Victoria Park stood as an enduring symbol of the special freedoms Hong Kong enjoyed, even after its return to Chinese rule.
Hong Kong artist Luk Ming remembers how more than a dozen people took part in interpretive performances in the bustling district of Causeway Bay on the anniversary's eve in 2009.
For the past three years, Lenny Kwok, a Hong Kong musician who has organised commemorative concerts since 1990, has hosted an operetta marking the anniversary in Taiwan.
Kwok said he believes the desire for freedom and democracy in both Hong Kong and Taiwan is closely connected to the Tiananmen incident.

2023.06.03 05:42 MoobloomMeadows Moobloom Meadows [Semi-Vanilla] [Modded] [SMP] {20+} {Whitelist} {1.19.2}
Hello, and welcome to Moobloom Meadows!
We're a relatively new serveworld and are looking for a few more people!
We’re a semi-vanilla Hermitcraft-like survival server for Java edition that operates out of the Pacific time zone (UTC-7 during daylight savings and UTC-8 for standard time)*. We're all small and friendly community looking to grow!
*All time zones are welcome! We just wanted to specify our own time zone so applicants know when we’ll be active/available.
What We Mean by “Semi” in Semi-Vanilla:
1.) We run the Flowers and Mooblooms mod by Nibaru:
https://beta.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/flowers-and-mooblooms For those wanting a TL;DR:
-13 new flower-based cows
-Flower seeds
-Flowers grow in stages
-Can get wither roses from Mooblooms
-New Florist villager (flowers and seeds for emeralds)
2.) We run some quality of life mods:
-Armor statues
-Multiplayer Sleep
-Server Status
-PlayeMob Head Drops
-Universal Dyeing
-Compressed Blocks
-In-game proximity voice chat (available but not necessary)
3.) We have set up a central hub where players can teleport to and from their bases:
-Players will have one teleportation spot set up for them that will connect to the central hub
-If requested, we will change the location for your spot up to three times (starter base, official base, maybe you change your mind and want a new official base) but your new spot will replace your old one
We realize this last one may not be appealing to some players so we wish to be upfront about it. Something we’ve noticed in the past is that some players like to go very far away to build their bases, which is great (exploration/mega builds), but sometimes lengthy Nether travel or flying can still discourage engagement with other players. We’re hoping that in having a hub that links all the bases for easy and quick transport, we can support trade, collaboration, and a flourishing shopping district.
Mini-games are also encouraged if anyone wishes to create and build any :) We will likely build some of our own in time as well.
Sound like something you’re interested in? We do have some rules:
We are an adult server: 20+ only
No griefing
No stealing
No PVP unless agreed upon prior or as part of a consented mini-game or event
We are an inclusive community: we do not tolerate discrimination of any kind
Apply here:
https://forms.gle/7T4vw5rmuAtvDySq6 After your application has been approved we will send you an invite* for the Moobloom Meadows Discord (where the world seed and mod setup information will be provided), and will add you to our Whitelist.
*Please make sure you are accepting friend requests on Discord so we can contact you. Thank you :)

2023.06.03 05:38 Ambitious_Emotion726 My DM got a taste of what it’s like to be a worker today
So my district manager decided to pop into my store today for a visit and while I love working for DG, the one thing that drains me the most is having to deal with customers especially the one that I had to deal with today. I was doing the stationary reset and I heard some commotion up at the register so I walk up to see if my cashier needs help and my district manager is sitting in the back office and so I approach the register and I see that someone’s trying to load a chime card and he’s agitated. He is trying to load $1,000 onto the card and my cashier who is a newer employee told him that we’re not able to do that so I stepped in and said yes, we are unable to do that because as I’ve seen from my own experience with the older system, it won’t allow us to do that much because it suspects fraud when you try and load a certain amount on card in one day or there are also restrictions on certain cards which is out of our control. So the man gets more agitated and raises his voice and says, are y’all stupid I’ve came to the store and they do it every-time (which is not true bc I’ve worked at this store for 3 years and I’ve never seen him before in my life) anyways he proceeds to berate us and say y’all are some dumb retarded mfs you must be new employees, which was kind of a slap in the face because I worked for DG for 3 years like I said before and I even said it to him and so my district manager proceeds to come out of the back office to see what’s going on, and she tried to explain the situation to him as well which made him more angry and then, once the situation got somewhat resolved, he then proceeded to throw $500 of cash at my cashier and say just load this on the card then since y’all don’t know what the Fuck you’re doing. Me standing back looking at him like you gotta be fucking kidding me like at the end of the day I could give less than two fucks about what Dollar General thinks when it comes to all that customer first shit idc if I’m an employee or not, I’m still human being and you shouldn’t talk to people like that regardless of the situation. Also, I look at the line of people that had accumulated behind this man and now I’m just utterly frustrated. So I then proceed to help my cashier load the card when in retrospect, I should’ve declined him service all together because of how rude he was to not only two employees, but a district manager who were all just trying to explain that we weren’t able to do it to avoid doing the whole transaction just for it to decline and waste our time. After the interaction was over and the man left, and I walked into the back office and said to my district manager “so now you see what we have to deal with on daily basis” and she just put her face in her hands and shook her head. But I’m curious as other workers how would you guys resolve this situation?

At least 233 passengers were feared dead and more than 900 seriously injured in a major rail accident involving two express trains in Balasore district of Odisha on June 2 evening.
The accident took place at around 7 p.m. when two coaches of 12864 Yashwantpur-Howrah Express derailed near Bahanaga Railway station in Balasore district.
In 2013, the Coramandel Express had met with an accident in Jajpur district of Odisha which is about 50 km away from the present accident site.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a tweet, expressed grief over the accident along with Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Friday night deputed a team from the State led by Transport Minister S.S. Sivasankar to Odisha to aid Tamils affected in the train accident.
Describing the accident as " severe in nature" the Chief Secretary said that Balasore District Magistrate has sought for ambulances which have been sent by the West Bengal government.

2023.06.03 04:01 fangedfay I accepted a new teaching job… and almost no one is happy for me.
I’m a fairly new teacher returning to the game after a medical break - drastically going from a super small school out in the middle of nowhere to the biggest school in a large district.
The interview was great! Two hours of wonderful, easy conversation and a tour. I adore the staff I’ve met so far and the school’s overall culture and message is
exactly what I want, unlike the previous school. I can tell I will be MUCH more supported, cared for, and valued in this role. But… my friends and family don’t seem very excited about “this” school for a variety of reasons. They say things like:
- “It’s a downgrade from the other school,” despite my very much improved feelings about this opportunity.
- “It’s a rough neighborhood,” even though it’s actually a safer area than where I went to college for 5 years.
- “Sure, you’ll get paid more… but is it worth it?” This is literally a $15k increase in my salary and because of how happy I am, I would’ve accepted the job for much less.
- Insert their elusive saying-it-but-not-saying it racist comments about a more diverse population (My family is white.) I’m VERY eager to return to a more diverse setting like my college campus. Variety is the spice of life!
- “Are you sure you can handle that?” I love what I do, and I’m good at what I do, but I’m not going to lie… their lack of faith in me is highly discouraging.
- Absolute silence and disappointed expressions. :(
So, I haven’t had much support from anyone in what I thought was a really beautiful situation. I’m trying not to let it break my heart but it is. It absolutely is…
I guess I’m hoping for some uplifting words and support from this community, because it doesn’t appear I will get it from the people I love.

2023.06.03 02:43 Pangolinooo Target/reach recommendations for business major
I'm kind of stuck trying to figure out what colleges would realistically have a place on my list. Definitely applying to UT Austin and Texas A&M. I believe that I have a good shot at getting into Mccombs, but I would prefer to go out of state, so I'm mainly looking for target or reach school recommendations that have business or business analytics programs at least comparable to UT.
Demographics: Tx, Non competitive HS, White male, first gen, upper middle class
Act 35, Sat 1500 (should I even submit Sat?)
4.0UW 4.3W. Rank is top 5%, but I was 1/500 at a much more competitive school before transferring at the start of junior year. Class rank dropped due to new school using a different gpa system. (Could my old class rank have any impact on applications?)
Coursework: AP Gov (4), AP Chem (4), AP Bio (4), AP Physics 1 (4), AP world (5). APES, AP Lang, AP Calc AB, AP Macro, APCSA. Several random dual enrollment classes. Taking Lit and Stats next year while self studying micro, psych, and BC because my school does not offer any of them.
Awards: Numerous district and regional level awards in UIL Academics competitions. Numerous regional awards in quiz bowl competitions.
Extracurriculars: - Cross country/Track captain. 4 year varsity athlete.
- Interned as a consultant for a golf tournament on the PGA tour
- Helped start a current events related club, grew to 30 members.
- Volunteered at a summer math camp through a local church.
- Started and led club for middle schoolers interested in joining cross country, helped to grow high school team from 30 to 70 members.
- Currently leading drive to raise money and gather supplies for a youth running club in an impoverished country.
- Part time job
- UIL Academics regional qualifier in several events somewhat related to my major(Texas statewide competition between schools.)

2023.06.03 02:16 saveyourtissues Friendly reminder SubZERO @ South First Fridays is happening tonight and tomorrow!
2023.06.03 02:02 Senior_Juice5380 Rebecca/Ted morning scene - pattern
I'm sad to see that the fake-out where it looks as if Ted and Rebecca just slept together is considered some mean spirited trolling.I find it untrue - because the writers have a pattern of throwing in tons of similar fake-outs and psych! moments regarding all kinds of things:
- Keeley j*ing off shortly after meeting Jamie, then refusing to show Roy her phone ... no, she was not doing it to a video of Jamie. But to a video of Roy crying.
- it looks like Nate got fired in season 1 finale, Ted and Higgins walk in the locker room all panicked, act like they don't know what happened.
- Dr Sharon falls from her bike and pieces of red glass kind of look like blood.
- Dr Sharon is in a wheelchair - to our and Ted's shock, but then she stands up.
- Higgins saying he's going to Red district in Amsterdam. It's so obvious, though, that he must mean something innocent, that even the other characters do the "NAH" gag.
- Jamie at the beginning of season 3 is told by Isaac that Roy and Keeley broke up. Jamie seems to be walking after Keeley who is leaving the building, however, he turns and walks into the room where Roy is.
- Beard telling Dottie that his heart was dragged to city square for everyone to spit on. She assumes that's him going through a heartbreak - but then Beard explains that it actually means he's happy and in love.
- Will being the only character who gets to have the 'typical Amsterdam Red District experience'.
Can you think of any more psych! moments (not regarding Ted and Rebecca) when the writers were clearly playing a trick?

2023.06.03 01:29 31_SAVAGE_ Longtime Civ 5 player finally playing 6, thoughts
Used to play a lot of civ 5 a few years ago. When 6 came out for whatever reason I wasnt really interested in it, the mods werent there yet, it was missing DLCs, etc I found 5 with mods still better (shoutout to vox populi mod). I realize this game came out like 5+ years ago but uh... theres a lot of games to play these days
Anyway after a couple games under my belt (easy science win on 5 with Korea, drawn out culture win with Pericles on 6, loss with Pachacuti on 7), had some thoughts if anyone is interested:
- District system was kind of weird at first but once you start to see some good combos it's great, very good change. At first I was like "why give up a perfectly good tile for one without any yields" but eventually it started to make sense. My only comment here is that there are a few too many restrictions to build some which should be basic. Oh and they cant be removed, ever. Why?
- Wonders using up tiles is also great. Offers a tradeoff for just wonder spamming, you lose tiles. The requirements can get pretty crazy but I like it because your wonder wont get sniped by a random AI just spamming wonders unless they settled in the very specific spots to get stuff like golden gate bridge, panama canal, etc.
- The natural disasters thing is pretty interesting, adds some extra flavounpredictability. My Pericles game had my main cities between Mount Vesuvius and another volcano. RIP to the brave greeks that gave their lives and refused to move away after the 7th eruption or something.
- Religion is still interesting in theory but annoying in practice with the AI cheating. I feel at higher difficulties there is almost no chance of getting a decent religion going, the AI shows up with like 5 missionaries at turn 50 which they fabricate from thin air. In 2 games the AI invaded with a ton of missionaries extremely early, converted my capital, and from that point onward there was nothing I could do to convert back. And you cant remove the Holy Site youre stuck with (thank you mods for the fix).
- Warrior Monks are op as hell, if you start near whoever has them it's absolutely gg. 40 strength, 200 faith cost, 3 moves, as early as Theology. Just lost my pachacuti game to this. I was actually defending well vs USA AND England who surprised decalred against me together even though I was the weakest still. I couldve held out but England had the warrior monks (like 4) and there was just nothing i couldve done.
- World Congress was way better in civ 5... I dont understand the changes at all, why cant you propose what gets voted on anymore? Instead its just some random proposals that make almost no difference, and someone crying about natural disasters every x turns. Quite disappointed with this one, makes me not want to play for diplomatic victory.
- Culture/tourism system is good especially with the additions of resorts, ski mountains, national parks, rock bands and such. However the balance is a little off. In my culture win i was basically dominating but it took like 50-100 turns to actually trigger the win because one of the AI had a massive civ. Also kind of forces you to expand a fair amount since I quickly filled out all my great work slots even with many wonders. Late game it seemed quite ridiculous to switch all my cities to full faith production in order to spam rock bands (even though my religion was lost forever by like turn 70). There should be a city project to generate tourism.
- Mods are quite good, especially all the UI stuff is very well taken care of and makes the game massively better. Stuff like the quick deals mod is absolutely brilliant. However I wish there was a consensus balance/slight gameplay tweaks mod like the vox populi mod in civ 5.
- Casus Belli is the right idea but implementation could be better. The game has no "memory" of previous events. If I get surprised declared, or an allied city state is captured by someone, that should be remembered for very long if not ever. Shouldnt get a penalty cause I liberated my ally CS after like 31 turns.
Anyway I dont even know if this game gets patched anymore or there are any changes on the horizon but still felt like writing this up, shoutout if you bothered to read it.

2023.06.03 01:28 SevereContribution35 Game Matrix: Analysis of GDC 2017 "An Approach to Holistic Level Design"
| Source: An Approach to Holistic Level Design This article offers a comprehensive analysis of the source video. While it closely follows the video's content, it also includes my own interpretations and expansions on the concepts presented, providing a deeper exploration into the art of game design. The three key elements of the game and their connection 1. Introduction to Holistic Level Design Over the past decade, Lee has contributed to four games, starting with an open-world action driving game, and subsequently transitioning towards first-person games with a holistic approach to level design. 1.1 Holistic Level Design Holistic thinking, as defined in the dictionary, involves viewing every component of a design in relation to its impact on the whole, with the understanding that the whole can be significantly more impactful than its individual parts. This concept is beautifully encapsulated in a quote from the book '100 Things I Learned at Architecture School': 'beauty is due more to the harmonious relationship among the elements of a composition than to the elements themselves.' This principle is argued to hold true for level design. 1.2 Key Elements in Games The lecture identifies three key elements in games: presentation, gameplay, and story. These elements are considered the three main pillars of game design. Each of these elements is crucial in its own right and deserves individual discussions. However, the focus of this talk is specifically on how these elements work together. 1.3 Interrelationships Between Key Elements The talk the concepts of affordances and intentionality that emerge from the relationship between gameplay and presentation. The way things are presented and the story that emerges leads to the idea referred to as world building. The interaction between gameplay and story gives rise to the concept of interactive narrative. The aim is to highlight and summarize these concepts and provide insights on their application in level design. Affordances and Intentionality 2. Affordances and Intentionality The discourse commences with an elucidation of affordances, a term primarily associated with industrial design. A quintessential example of affordances in action is the design of door handles, where the form of the handle communicates its function. This principle is extrapolated to level design, arguing that the design of elements within the game environment should intuitively communicate their function to the player. 2.1 Affordances The most conspicuous affordances in first-person level design are visual 2.1.1 Affordances in Level Design In the milieu of immersive 3D games such as Dishonored, the most conspicuous affordances in first-person level design are visual, conveyed through elements like layout and lighting. These affordances present the player with navigation options in relation to their goals and obstacles. The design of the game environment, inclusive of specific interactive objects, affords particular gameplay opportunities. Consistency in these low-level game player forms is deemed crucial for clarity and player understanding. Arkane is strictly prohibited to use the same meshes for a non-interactive door as an interactive one 2.1.2 Visual Language in Level Design The talk underscores the importance of establishing a clear visual language in level design. For instance, at Arkane, it is strictly prohibited to use the same meshes for a non-interactive door as an interactive one. This is to ensure clarity for the players and avert confusion. The talk also discusses the use of world fiction to justify level design requirements. 2.1.3 Broad Affordances in Level Design Moving beyond low-level affordances, the talk discusses broader, higher-level affordances. These include communicating to the player the breadth of the possibility space and the extent of their agency. The talk uses the example of the Dust District mission in Dishonored 2 to illustrate how layout can reflect high-level affordances and present clear choices to the player. Intentionality is defined as making conscious choices with specific goals and expectations in mind 2.2 Intentionality The concept of intentionality in games was coined around 1997 by Doug Church. This concept has since been explored and expanded upon by various game designers and theorists. Intentionality is a critical aspect of gameplay as it directly influences the player's engagement and immersion in the game world. Intentionality is defined as making conscious choices with specific goals and expectations in mind. This involves the player actively making decisions based on their understanding of the game environment and mechanics, their objectives, and their desired outcomes. Examples of weak intentionality include being lost, doing something without knowing why, and twitch reacting to surprises. These situations often result from unclear or inconsistent affordances, lack of clear objectives, or sudden and unexpected game events. 2.2.1 The Importance of Player Intentionality Clear intentionality is at the heart of all the motor tuned gameplay. This type of gameplay emphasizes the player's active role in shaping their gaming experience through their decisions and actions. Gameplay mechanics and abilities revolve around giving the player unique and combinable powers. These powers provide the player with a range of options for interacting with the game environment and overcoming challenges. This, in turn, enhances the player's sense of agency and intentionality. Affordances present the player with information about the situation so they can understand their options and act with intentionality. This involves designing the game environment and mechanics in a way that clearly communicates the possible actions and outcomes to the player. 4 tips to enhance player intentionality 2.2.2 Facilitating Player Intentionality Players need choice, motivation, information from clear and consistent affordances, and time to process the information to act with intentionality. Providing players with a range of options, clear objectives, consistent and understandable affordances, and sufficient time to make decisions can significantly enhance their sense of intentionality. Ways to facilitate intentionality include clear and consistent affordances, presenting the player with higher-level and longer-term goals, and player-driven pacing and player-initiated action. These strategies aim to empower the player, giving them more control over their gaming experience and promoting a greater sense of engagement and immersion. The Gameplay Cycle 2.2.3 The Gameplay Cycle The gameplay cycle consists of observing, formulating a plan, executing the plan, and reacting. This cycle represents the continuous process of decision-making and action-taking that players go through during gameplay. Stealth gameplay emphasizes this loop, giving the player time to think, explore, analyze the situation, and formulate an intention before they reveal themselves. This type of gameplay promotes a high level of player intentionality by requiring careful planning and strategic decision-making. Examples of weak intentionality 2.2.4 The Effect of Intentionality on Linearity Perception Linearity feels bad when intentionality is lacking or weak. When players are forced to follow a predetermined path with little room for decision-making or exploration, they may feel less engaged and immersed in the game. Games like Half-Life 2 and Portal, despite being linear, feel less so due to strong intentionality. These games succeed in creating an engaging and immersive experience by aligning the player's goals and actions with the game's objectives and mechanics, thereby enhancing the player's sense of agency and intentionality. The more linear a game is, the more the level designer's job is to design situations that players will naturally want to do, making them feel that it was their idea all along. This involves creating a game environment and mechanics that align with the player's motivations and expectations, thereby promoting a greater sense of intentionality and engagement. World Building 3. World Building World building is a crucial aspect of game development, contributing significantly to the overall player experience. It involves creating a unique, cohesive, and meaningful environment that immerses players and enhances gameplay. This process is not just about designing landscapes and structures; it's about creating a living, breathing world that tells a story. 3 world building goals 3.1 Setting Goals for World Building The first step in world building is setting clear, specific goals. It's not enough to have a vague idea of the world you want to create. Instead, you need to be specific about the details and the ideas you're presenting. For instance, merely presenting a future with war and corporations might establish a genre, but it doesn't build a specific world. The more specific the ideas are to your game's world, the more unique and memorable the world becomes. However, specificity doesn't necessarily mean that everything has to be completely original. You can use well-known archetypes and add specific details to make them unique to your world. For instance, Harvey Smith, the creative director of Dishonored, used a well-known archetype, the crazy evil genius scientist, and added specific details to make the character unique and contribute to the world building. Black market and overseer outpost in Dishonored 3.2 The Use of Mission Weave Scenes Mission weave scenes are an effective tool for world building. These scenes, which are woven into the gameplay, help build the world and tell stories that are specific to the game's universe. For instance, in Dishonored, scenes inside a black market or an overseer outpost were used to convey information specific to the game's factions and district, thereby contributing to the world building. These scenes are not just for gameplay; they also serve to immerse the player in the world. They provide context and background, helping the player understand the world they're in and the characters they're interacting with. In Dishonored, even minor details were used to contribute to the world building 3.3 The Constant Need for World Building World building is not a one-time task; it's a continuous process. Every aspect of the game, from NPCs to objectives to loot, offers an opportunity for world building. As a game developer, you should always be looking for ways to add depth and detail to your world. For instance, in Dishonored, even minor details were used to contribute to the world building. A building that was initially just a facade was later opened up to provide more navigation options for the player. Instead of making it just another generic abandoned apartment, the developers added a note for the player to read, telling a story about someone who used to live there but got kicked out by the overseers. 3 world building tips 3.4 Deep Dive into World Building World building is not just about creating a physical environment; it's also about creating a society and a culture. It's about showing how the people in the world live, what they believe in, and how they interact with each other. For instance, in Bioshock, every part of its world supports the idea of how a society might crumble under relentless pursuit of progress. In Metro 2033, a child playing with a toy car symbolizes the future that the people are fighting for. In Dishonored, the world is about power relationships and corruption, and this is reflected in the world building. In conclusion, world building is a complex process that requires careful planning and continuous effort. It's about creating a world that is specific, continuous, and says things about the people in the world. With the right approach, you can create a game world that feels unique, cohesive, and meaningful. 4. Interactive Narrative Interactive narrative is a complex and expansive topic that arises from the intersection of interactivity and storytelling. While it's a vast subject that can't be fully covered in a brief period, it's essential to grasp its significance in the context of game design. The conventional wisdom of 'show, don't tell,' often borrowed from passive mediums like films and novels, isn't an adequate guiding principle for interactive narratives. These passive mediums don't need to consider the element of interactivity inherent in games. Thus, in the context of interactive narratives, we must go beyond merely showing and telling. The unique strength of interactive media is its interactivity. This interactivity can be leveraged to empower the player with narrative intentionality. This involves giving the player the information, time, and opportunity to make intentional choices with narrative goals in mind, not just gameplay goals. This approach is a potent way to engage the player in the story and make them feel a part of the game world. 4.1 Case Study: Narrative Intentionality in Dishonored In games like Dishonored, narrative intentionality is built into the game at a systems level. This means that the game's systems are designed to facilitate narrative intentionality. Every non-player character (NPC) in the game can be interacted with in various ways, and these interactions can alter the story and the world. This transforms what would otherwise be a simple gameplay choice into an opportunity to express narrative intentionality. Every time a player encounters an NPC, they are not just making a gameplay decision, but also a narrative one. This adds a layer of depth and complexity to the game, making it more engaging and immersive. 4.2 Case Study: Narrative Intentionality in Uncharted 2 Another method to create a sense of drama and emotional engagement in games is by aligning the player's emotions with those of the character in the game. This can be seen in Uncharted 2, where players are made to feel the same anxiety and tension as the protagonist during perilous situations. This is achieved by maintaining player control during these situations, rather than switching to a cutscene. This ensures that the player's emotional state aligns with that of the character, creating a more immersive and emotionally engaging experience. The 'pick up the can' tutorial in Half-Life 2 4.3 Case Study: Narrative Intentionality in Half-Life 2 and Heavy Rain The 'pick up the can' tutorial in Half-Life 2 is an excellent example of how games can evoke drama and story in the player's mind. In this tutorial, the player is presented with a choice that reflects the human condition of the game's characters. This choice is not just a gameplay decision, but also a narrative one, making the player relate to the game's characters on a deeper level. Heavy Rain is another game that effectively illustrates how even minor gameplay mechanics can be used to affirm or challenge a player's sense of morality and values. In one scene, the player is given the choice to play the role of a good father or a selfish one. This choice is not just about winning or losing a game sequence, but also about expressing the player's narrative intentionality. This scene resonates with the player because it reflects the fundamental nature of parenthood, where personal success is no longer the priority. 'Understanding Comics' 5. Conclusion The final segment of the talk delved into an intriguing comparison between the art of creating comics and the process of level design in video games. Lee drew upon insights from Scott McCloud's seminal work, 'Understanding Comics'. McCloud's central argument is that the allure of comics doesn't simply stem from the fusion of exceptional art and writing. Instead, it's the unique interplay between these elements that truly brings a comic to life. This concept finds a parallel in the realm of level design. The player's experience isn't solely defined by the individual elements of gameplay, graphics, and story. Rather, it's the synergistic relationship between these elements that shapes the gaming experience. Lee further posited that in the context of immersive games, these elements aren't merely supplementary features designed to enhance gameplay. They are, in fact, integral to the overall player experience. Lee urged level designers to embrace these insights as shared objectives. When collaborating with other disciplines, such as artists and writers, these shared objectives can serve as a guiding principle. The ultimate goal is to create games that are not only more engaging but also more interesting and captivating for the player.
