2023.03.21 02:58 RogueGuardianStudios Just got back from 7 days on the Carnival Celebration
Just got back off of Carnival newest ship the Celebration, and boy oh boy is it a mixed bag.
First things first, there were 4 of us in a family harbor suite me and my wife (mid 30's) and our two kids (7 M, and 22mo F).
The room was adequate and had plenty of storage. The beds were comfy in the hotel kind of way. The only issue with the layout was with the door to the room being making it very hard to get our stroller in and out on port days.
The cleanliness of the room left much to be desired, as my little one found leftover peanuts from the previous guests on the first night in the room. These were just loose on the ground not in a package or anything like that. As time went by I also found where some soda had splashed one of the cabinets and had dried into a syrupy mess, also there before we got the room. The bathroom doors handle already had several screws loose and was coming away from the door.
The bathroom itself was cramped, but the shower had plenty of room and I never felt crowded will showering (I'm a larger guy 5'9 230 lb), but that did come at the expense of the rest of the bathroom which felt very crowded.
My son enjoyed the water slides on the back of the ship, except for one which was always out of service (the drop slide), and while he was not tall enough to ride the Bolt roller coaster it wouldn't have mattered since it was down for maintenance most of the time. However he ended up spending most of his time in Camp Ocean where he had a blast.
my daughter on the other hand enjoyed her time, but was not as well taken care of. Celebration offers "Turtles" level of care which is 0 - 1. This was a big selling point for us as we have cruised with Royal and they have nursery care as well. The hours for this care however where horrible. I tried to look up the hours before the cruise but they were not posted anywhere. On sea days they would watch her from 8am - 10am (maybe), and 10pm - 1am, and on port days it was 3-4 hours of the port stay but off set in away that you would miss about half of the day if you used it (we did not), then the 10pm - 1am all of this at $9 hr + tip. Considering how much of a selling point this was and how much Carnival was hyping it up this is disgraceful. While I'm not saying we should be able to drop her off all day, the availability made it impossible for me and the wife to have a nice dinner or catch one of the shows just the two of us. This was not an issue on Royal.
The food was a mixed bag. The main Dining room never had anything that made me go wow, except for their melting cake desert. However Guys burger joint was wonderful greasy goodness, Big chicken and some of the best chicken I have had in a long time, and The Pig and Anchor was amazing as well. The steakhouse was not good or worth the extra charge. We skipped the seafood restaurant. The "pop up" street eats where always good, and I love the idea of a new small themed snack everyday. I ordered the Seafood shacks buffalo shrimp one time, and while it was made to order and very good, it was not buffalo. It was more of a thai chili sauce. The pizza was good late night food and always a kid pleaser. Deco Deli's sandwiches where all good as well. The sushi Restaurant was hit or miss, but that is not an thing I normally do, and my wife loved everything there so take that for what is worth. The Japanese steak house was wonderful, large portions of good food with a light hearted show to go with it. However the best food hands down was at Emeril's. Everything was amazing, not a bad thing on the menu.
The Casino was there. I am a big Crapps player, I enjoy the atmosphere and getting to know the other players. Carnival did not make this easy. First off it was a $15 table (other lines are $10, they said it was a big ship tax...), second only about a third of the dealers knew what was going on( this caused 10 plus min waits between rolls sometimes ) and they would constantly misplace your bets or not pay you out right. This caused issues, and regularly spoiled the atmosphere at the table. Third pretty much anything goes with the dice. Throw it just over the halfway point on the tabe no where near the back wall, no issues. Toss the dice over everyone's heads, no issues. Hit people with the dice! As long as the dice landed back on the table, it was all good. At one point in time someone threw in their money and card as the shooter was throwing and got hit by the dice and it was counted. I stayed because it was the only game in town, but never again.
And we have to talk about the kids. At all hours of the day and night there were packs of kids roaming the Lido deck, buffets, and other halls. Most of the time this was not an issue, however when it was it was because a 15 -17 yr old where fighting in the buffet (Carnival did not break it up, and this "play" fighting bumped into several other guest as well as knocking over a small child) or a group of 10-12 yr olds running through the halls bumping into other guests screaming profanities the whole time. I don't know the solution to this but I will not be coming back so I don't have to worry about it.
Overall the staff were always kind, except for one person who gave me an "that's not my job" when asking for replacement silverware. Apparently their shift had ended, but they were still in full uniform.

2023.03.21 02:30 ballsquancher What makes something as simple as an avocado roll taste different at nearly every restaurant?
I’m not very knowledgeable on sushi, and this may be very noob of a question. I get an avocado roll at every sushi restaurant I go to, and they are different every time. Sometimes it’s so good that I don’t even need soy/wasabi, and it’ll even soil it. On the opposite end of the spectrum, sometimes no amount of soy/wasabi makes it any better, as it is as mediocre as it can be. Any thoughts?

Looking for a PSYCAS or APA approved program with a completion time of 4-5 years max. Already have a MA in counseling with MFT emphasis. Anyone know any good programs from LA to San Diego? I work full-time remotely (little travel) with a highly competitive salary, so I’m looking for something hybrid/night classes/weekend classes. Been searching for a few days and have found narrowed to around 8ish schools but looking for any additional school recommendations that were friendly for working adults.

Spectre of Maralinga hangs over Aukus Nuclear Waste for Indigenous Communities
https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/ma19/spectre-of-maralinga-hangs-over-aukus-nuclear-waste-for-indigenous-communities
"Behind all the pomp of the Aukus submarine deal in San Diego there was a detail that could prove a much bigger obstacle than even the massive USS Missouri moored near the three leaders. Under the agreement, Australia will be responsible for storing high-level nuclear waste from the decommissioned reactors.
And that is no easy feat. The US and UK naval reactors that will power both the Virginia-class subs and the future SSN-Aukus boats are fuelled by highly enriched uranium-235.
Once removed and decommissioned, any spent fuel from naval reactors is usually reprocessed to extract usable nuclear fuel for civilian generation and the remaining radioactive waste concentrated. The Australian government has promised not to reprocess spent fuel, which means it will probably be sent offshore.
Overseas, the process typically involves extracting usable fuel such as uranium and plutonium, and then vitrification, in which radioactive waste is concentrated and melted down into a “big glass block” weighing tonnes, according to Dr Patrick Burr, a senior lecturer in nuclear engineering at the University of New South Wales. “It’s actually a very small volume, but it is extremely radioactive,” he said.
After this complicated and hugely expensive process has been completed, there remains one big question – where will this waste be stored?
Nuclear reactor fuel yields high-level waste, which is not only more radioactive. “When you have high-level waste, it is actually physically hot, so [you] need to think about thermal management as well,” Burr said.
As some experts have pointed out, Australia has not even found a permanent site to store low-level nuclear waste, let alone highly radioactive waste.
So far, the government has not given any details on that other than the defence minister, Richard Marles, saying it will be on land that is either owned by the defence department or to be acquired in future. Marles also said this won’t need to be solved until well into the 2050s.
But that is not enough to satisfy many Indigenous communities, who fear the prospect of high-level nuclear waste dumps on traditional lands, and for whom the spectre of British nuclear testing in the 1950s and 60s still looms large.
In South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula region, a proposed storage facility near Kimba for low-level nuclear waste has faced staunch opposition from traditional owners, as well as environmentalists and farmers, despite a ballot supported by about 60% of residents conducted by the Australian Electoral Commission.
The Barngarla Determination Aboriginal Corporation chair, Jason Bilney, said the Barngarla people had not been consulted, opposed the plan and had been in a legal battle with the federal government against the proposal.
He said he believed any storage of high-level nuclear waste would not be suitable in that area given the lack of granite and rock to hold the toxic waste, which could take hundreds of thousands of years to break down. “The ground is dirt,” he said. “High-level stuff needs to be stored and contained within the solid rock formation and Kimba doesn’t have that.”
Bilney said many traditional owners in the region had a deep distrust and fear of defence testing and nuclear waste after the nuclear weapons testing conducted by the UK in Maralinga.
The tests caused many of the local Anangu Pitjantjatjara people to suffer from radioactive illnesses, with elders and family sickened and the land contaminated.
Bilney said his grandfather, who was from the Maralinga area, always remembered the trauma and the fear, which has continued through the generations.
"That’s why I’m so strong and so passionate about being an advocate for my people and all Indigenous people,” he said.
“There is still a big fear that that could happen again … It’s that generational effect and even now people are still passing away of cancers.” ...
Bilney said while the bomb testing was not the same as storage of high-powered uranium rods, that fear remains.
“It’s that generational effect. It’s people just dying from the effects of the atomic bomb and still suffering trauma. This is going to be stored into the earth. It’s going to destroy our way of life for us.”
He said there was a real concern that storage of nuclear waste on traditional lands and any restrictions on access could harm the cultural and spiritual knowledge that had been passed down for thousands of generations.
“It’s our biggest worry. We are the oldest culture for over 60,000 years and this is going to outlast it. We want to pass down to the next generation and to continue this for decades to come to protect and preserve our sites and our storylines and that connection to country. And if they put it on country, we won’t be able to share that and we will lose those storylines. It will sever those ties.”
"Our country is a huge bit of South Australia,” he said. “It starts from the Port Augusta region up to Woomera, around to Coober Pedy and through Tallaringa down around to the west coast, back around through to Whyalla – that’s traditionally Kokatha country.
“Having to fight 20 years to be recognised over a piece of country that’s now going to be targeted to be used as a radioactive waste dump, we’re very concerned about this.”
He said he was strongly against any proposed nuclear waste storage facility in any defence site in his traditional homelands.
“We don’t want it and anyone with any common sense is going to say the same thing. We don’t want that in our back yard.”
He said there were still defence testing sites in the remote desert, with unexploded ordinances, rockets and materials dating back decades – in 2021 an unexploded rocket was found near Lake Hart, a culturally significant site.
“There’s a lot of historic waste that’s still lying around in the Woomera area from the very early days of when they were testing things. It’s bad enough that when we go out to our sites that we’ve got to dodge missiles that are lying around on our heritage sites.”
The federal government has been contacted for response."

An Australian Army Recruit sends home a letter...
Dear Ma & Pa,
I am well. Hope youse are too. Tell me big brothers Doug and Phil that the Army is better than workin’ on the farm - tell them to get in quick smart before the jobs are all gone! I wuz a bit slow in settling down at first, because ya don’t hafta get outta bed until 6 am. But I like sleeping in now, cuz all ya gotta do before brekky is make ya bed and shine ya boots and clean ya uniform. No cows to milk, no calves to feed, no feed to stack - nothin’!! Ya haz gotta shower though, but its not so bad, coz there’s lotsa hot water and even a light to see what ya doing!
At brekky ya get cereal, fruit and eggs but there’s no kangaroo steaks or possum stew like wot Mum makes. You don’t get fed again until noon and by that time all the city boys are dead because we’ve been on a ’route march’ - geez its only just like walking to the windmill in the back paddock!!
This one will kill me brothers Doug and Phil with laughter. I keep getting medals for shootin’ - dunno why. The bullseye is as big as a possum’s bum and it don’t move and it’s not firing back at ya like the Johnsons did when our big scrubber bull got into their prize cows before the Ekka last year! All ya gotta do is make yourself comfortable and hit the target! You don’t even load your own cartridges, they comes in lil' boxes, and ya don’t have to steady yourself against the rollbar of the roo shooting truck when you reload!
Sometimes ya gotta wrestle with the city boys and I gotta be real careful coz they break easy - it’s not like fighting with Doug and Phil and Jack and Boori and Steve and Muzza all at once like we do at home after the muster.
Turns out I’m not a bad boxer either and it looks like I’m the best the platoon’s got, and I’ve only been beaten by this one bloke from the Engineers - he’s 6 foot 5 and 15 stone and three pick handles across the shoulders and as ya know I’m only 5 foot 7 and eight stone wringin’ wet, but I fought him till the other blokes carried me off to the boozer.
I can’t complain about the Army - tell the boys to get in quick before word gets around how good it is.
Your loving daughter,
Patricia

2023.03.21 01:33 Salt-Friendship-2122 Where are my internal organization people at
After much analysis and deliberation, I finally decided on the Cotopaxi Allpa 28—but after receiving it, I'm having second thoughts on its appearance. I actually selected a really beautiful color combo, but I just don't know that I'll want something this ostentatious for the next decade of my life (fingers crossed that whatever I get lasts that long). Are there other personal item size packs out there (of comparable size) that have good internal org like the Allpa does...sans the dazzling array of colors? 😅
P.S. I know the Allpa also comes in black, but unfortunately, that version has the shitty TPU coating that I really don't want.
P.P.S. My other option is getting TNF Base Camp XS and investing in packing cubes. I don't love the appearance of the duffel, but it is 31L with compression straps, which is pretty enticing...

2023.03.21 01:29 wyrman332 A heartfelt thanks
A few months ago I posted a Gofundme link for a member of local 332 in San Jose California that suffered a career ending injury from the fault of another driver who hit this member while on her motorcycle. She has posted on Facebook her heartfelt gratitude and I wanted to share it with those who may have donated to her go fund me i posted here.
“Please help me share this through the grapevine!
I want to solemnly thank the IBEW as a whole for the much needed blessings I've continued to receive by local members nationwide. This post is for all my brothers and sisters both known and unknown. I find myself constantly thinking of how I could find a way to contact each and everyone to thank them tremendously for the miraculous amount of solidarity I've experienced since my recent traumatic accident. Filled with joyful tears; my heart is overwhelmed and warmed as I browse throwback photos.Thinking of all I've been given over the last thirteen years. All this priceless knowledge. All this heart-felt joy among brethren. All this support; just from being a part of this family. Definitely the best choice I've ever made! Yet knowing I'm not quite of the woods, but alive still is unearthing gratitude more as each day passes. Soon I'll be home...with my son as the worlds sun sets at night. A precious dream that will thankfully come true. My wounds are still healing and delaying my fitment for a prosthetic. This deeming me still to a wheelchair and considered handicap and care dependent upon my return. This also in thanks again to the immeasurable amount of love and support from not only my trade brethren (of whom also did a toy drive for my son last Christmas) but also the contractors from my most recent job call in 234. Who mustered up funds and a plan to install a ramp enabling me to enter my home. Until then I can only reminisce of the countless times and moments both working and learning from everyone I've been so lucky meet in the field.” ~ Jennifer Martin Fuller Local 332
