Honda GCV170 push mower idle surge.

2023.06.03 01:41 Odd-Run-9666 Honda GCV170 push mower idle surge.

I have an idle surge problem on. My Honda GCV170 with the auto choke. We bought it new a couple of years back and everything ran fine until I was away one day and my some added premix instead of straight gasoline. He only made a few passes with it and my wife heard it surging and had him shut it down. She phoned me, asked what to do, and I told her to drain the fuel from the tank. It’s been surging ever since (probably 20 tanks of fuel).
I’ve seen the videos regarding plugged pilot jet as a common issue in these. I’ve done this four times and have gone as far as to remove the bowl and primary jet, cleaned each little port with a micro drill bit, thoroughly cleaned the cab with carb cleaner and compressed air. Everything looks immaculate to begin with.
I’m questioning the springs/linkage. If I manually apply pressure to the auto idle linkage, I can raise the RPMs and it does seem to level out.

2023.06.02 19:27 BillyMac814 KLX jet mod and hard cold start.

What is the benefit of the KLX carb mod?
The original owner of my bike did that to mine. The second owner left it sit a year and didn’t ride it at all. It runs fine but it doesn’t start well when it’s cold, I typically have to add a bit of throttle while full choked to get it to start. After that it’s fine, not sure if maybe it just needs cleaned up from sitting or if something else needs done.

2023.06.02 18:40 paddyj6999 Tm40 tuning issues.

Hi wonderful Dr community. Anyone ever put a tm40 on the thumper and had issues? I have a big bore 790 kit installed with the air box cutout with the forever filter in. Forget the name. Valves in spec. I have the aimixture knob set 2 turns out. It has the 150 size main jet. Not sure the pilot.
The problem: starts...ok. the choke doesn't help in fact it lowers rpm if anything. when warm she's running too fast. I lower the rpm idle with the stick by the carboretor so it idles at 1600. Ride it. Let it sit. Now it struggles to start and idles too low.
Maybe my choke cable isn't cutting it. I did upgrade the spring and the slide mechanism at the end of it.
Riding it with this carb is sweet but I just can't get it to sit right.
Help please.
Appreciate any tips tricks to get this baby ticking good.
Cheers 🥂🥂

2023.06.02 15:04 Gator588 Actionable Steps That are Helping Me

Hello All,
First off I want to say what you are going through is only temporary. It is easy to beat yourself up about it thinking it is weird, or stupid, but just know that you are not alone and there are many other irrational fears that millions of people struggle with every day. Having said that, I have found some relief recently and wanted to post on here in the hopes that it helps some of you.
My story of this phobia started two years ago where I felt like I couldn't swallow while I was eating steak at a restaurant. This instantly triggered a panic attack, fight or flight response that freaked me out. I swallowed the piece just fine, but I believe that experience triggered this phobia in my subconscious. This lead to two straight years of overthinking every meal I experienced. I will admit, my phobia never got so bad that I couldn't eat solid food, but I had to eat very slow, over chew everything, and overall just stressing about something that should typically bring you happiness. However, in just the last week I have found some relief, and with time I am hopeful that I will conquer this once and for all.
Now, we all wish there was a magic pill that could make this instantly go away. There are a lot of anxiety meds out there and they seem to help a lot of people. However, I believe that all these do is suppress the symptoms, instead of fixing the root cause. So that was my mission, to put in the work and find a way to identify the root cause of my fear and anxiety around eating. Here is a list of what I did:

  1. I listened to this podcast episode from Stanford Neuroscientist on Erasing Fear and Trauma. Here is the link if you are interested - Erasing Fears & Traumas Based on the Modern Neuroscience of Fear Huberman Lab Podcast #49 - YouTube
    1. One thing I took away from this and started doing is the Cyclic Hyperventilation. Where for 5 minutes every day for two weeks you purposely put yourself in a state of stress and anxiety. He explains it in detail in the podcast, but I am 8 days in and it is really helping. While I do this I think about eating scary things such as steak. If you try this make sure you follow his precautions that he mentions on the podcast.
  2. I listened to another podcast from Huberman (he is a wealth of knowledge on a variety of topics). Here is the link if you are interested - Dr. Chris Palmer: Diet & Nutrition for Mental Health Huberman Lab Podcast #99 - YouTube
    1. This is one of the most fascinated podcasts I have ever listened to. This guy has actually healed people with Schizophrenia through diet and nutrition. Because of this podcast I started doing the keto diet about 10 days ago. Wow! I can't believe how much better I feel and how better my mental health and attitude concerning food. Now, I know it may seem counterproductive since our phobia is around eating, but there are many soft foods that would be considered low carb or keto. Avocado, soft scrambled eggs, soft cheeses, and milk are some of my staples. If you can't eat any of those, you can always make shakes with full fat milk, almond milk, and a variety of other items to make a very healthy low carb meal replacement shake.
  3. Cold Showers
    1. Sounds crazy and woo woo, but there is actually a lot of science around the mental (and physical) benefits of cold showers. I have been doing this in conjunction with the cyclic hyperventilation, and I really think they are helping. You can even start with a warm shower, and then finish with the cold for about 60-90 seconds. That is all it takes to get the benefits. Look up the Wim Hof Method and you can learn more about this.
  4. Exercise
    1. You don't have to get a gym membership, just find something (walking, biking, swimming) that gets your body moving. Exercise has been shown to greatly improve mental health. I recommend some kind of light shoulder exercise and neck stretches to really help strengthen that area and help swallowing.
  5. Omega-3
    1. If you are on anxiety meds thats fine, but if not, Omega-3 supplements have been shown to provide an anti-depressant effect around the same level as an SSRI. You want to find a supplement that gives at least 2000mg of Omega 3. If you are interested, here is a link to what I have been taking for the last 10 days Amazon.com: OmegaWell Omega 3 Fish Oil - 2000mg Capsules: Heart, Brain, & Joint Support - 800 mg EPA 600 mg DHA - w/Natural Lemon Oil, Sustainably Sourced - Mini Softgels - 30 Day Supply : Health & Household
    2. If you can't swallow the pills, you can actually cut the tips off them and mix the oil in with a smoothie or water.
  6. Meditation/Yoga/Stretching
    1. I recommend a combination of these three. Find one that you like and try it out for a couple weeks. Focus on your breathing with any of these and they will help I guarantee it. There is an app called Plyability that use every night before bed. 10-20 minutes of stretching combined with breathwork and I feel amazing.
  7. Breathwork
    1. I like the app "Breathwrk." There are dozens of breathing exercises you can work on and practice for what you think will help you. What has helped me is doing the "Lung Capacity" exercise. It forces you to take slow breaths with a 20 second breath hold. It is meant to strengthen your diaphragm and increase lung capacity. I think this really helps with my eating because a lot of anxiety starts with your breath. If you can learn to control your breath and your mind while eating, it makes the whole experience much easier.
  8. Talk to someone
    1. Spouse, family, therapist, anybody. Find someone to talk to about this. I opened up to my wife about it (I was embarrassed for a whole to mention this to anyone and tried to hide it), and I have felt much better and much less weird or ashamed. So find someone that will understand and help you work through it, it makes a world of difference.
I know this seems like a lot, but remember as much as we want to snap our fingers and make this go away, thats just not going to happen. Sometimes it takes action. But that is the beauty in this! You don't have to rely on a drug or a doctor to fix this, YOU HAVE CONTROL OVER YOUR OWN MIND. And if you have the control, you have the ability to fix it. It might be hard and may take some time, but you have the power to fix this fear! Remember, it is HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY unlikely that you will choke to death. The data is like 1.5/100,000 people choke to death. That includes babies, elderly people, and non-food choking deaths! Your body is hard wired to automatically chew and swallow, so this fear is just your brain getting in the way of what your body naturally knows what to do.
Hopefully some of this helps, feel free to reach out with any questions!

It’s hard to start cold. Once it’s warm it’s great. It only idles right if I hold the choke almost all the way off. Not on. Off. I have cleaned the carb. Shop did the valve adjustment. Has new gas in it and still has the issue.

2023.06.01 22:14 bomb447 Carb Rebuild Kit for Tiller

Does anyone have any info on this tiller that my dad got recently? I'm wanting to rebuild the carb but not sure what kit to get. It only runs with the choke and starting fluid. Plan on getting a new spark plug and fuel line/filter as well. I emptied the gas tank and put in new gas. Do I need to change the oil as well, if so, what type?
The serial number says Garden Way, so looks like an old Troy Bilt, and the engine has numbers stamped on it as well. Model Type CODE 195437 0150 01 81042912
Thanks.

2023.06.01 21:06 Mr_Bass69 Will I need a better rod for my modded Predator 212?

Currently, I'm in the process where I'm buying all of the parts I need for my Predator 212 build. I have already bought a cast aluminum flywheel (not billet because I'm poor), a clone Mikuni carb, #125 and #130 main jets for the carb, 18Lb valve springs, and some extra gaskets. Down the line, I plan to also pick up an exhaust header and a muffler, and a fuel pump system so I can move my gas tank to a more convenient spot on my frame. My question is, though, will it be safe to use the stock rod? I do not have the money to replace the entire motor, so I really want to be sure.

How coud I get an air filter on this?
I do not currently have an air filter on my Jikov carb because Babetta 210's system had an itricate intake (through a pipe-through the frame-in the carb) and dust would accumulate. (Annoingly) In the second pic you can see the problem on my second carb ,same as on the moped. A "sport" filter wouldn't fit because of the choke pin hole.

Carb question

41 guide holder. Is this piece reusable? I accidentally tried to pull the cable out from the carb by the plunger and diddnt unscrew it.. i musta stretched the cable it doesnt seem to push back into the carb right... i was wonderint if i could reuse the "guide holder" they are 18$$$ each. Or do i have to buy a new cable and replace everything including the plungers springs and "guide holders"??? I dont see why it wouldnt be reusable. It seems like the least likely thing to break?? 🤷‍♂️

Carbureted engine taking 8-15 seconds to turn over to start when left overnight.
Hello. I have a 2y carb petrol engine that if you start up when already driving around or even sat for 4 hours, no problem.
Leave it overnight and she takes work to start. Intermittent turnovers work better than a long turnover. And when she starts if you gas her she chokes out (not sure if seperate issue or connected). It’s not too cold where I live 20c in day 12c at night. So I have to rev her a little for about 10 seconds to get her working after finally getting her going and not choked when trying to rev.
Any ideas on the issue?
Thank you for all your helps.

2023.06.01 09:01 asim0092 Changed up the gearing, ride is so much smoother but exhaust is POPPING like crazy

Letting off the throttle the exhaust is POP POP POPPING with flames shooting out. Looks cool, but I don't think that's a good thing lol. 79cc Pred. New carb on it that I haven't tuned so I assume that's the issue.
Engine wants to die when choke isn't closed when I come to a stop. Stutters and struggles at top speeds when choke isn't open a bit. Not sure what jets to change, what's lean/rich.

2016 KLX 140L backfiring, high rev, carb problems please help (with videos)
I have tried almost everything I can think of, and I am begging for help. I’m going to write as many details as I can, if you any questions Ill respond as fast as I can. I have a KLX 140L and I recent bought a Yoshimura exhaust, a big bore kit and a mikuni vm26 carb. I installed the big bore, the exhaust and carb at the same time, I also bought a newer battery that runs good. But when I start the bike it idles super high, is extremely loud and my exhaust constantly backfires. I adjusted the carb float heigh to 23mm (the vm26 is supposed to be between 22-24mm) and I changed the spark plug. I’ve check compression, spark, gas and air. The bike has a brand new oil filter, air filter, oil and gas. I just opened up the engine today and replaced the gaskets etc. I tightened the exhaust to check for air leaks and I found nothing. I think it’s the carb but I have no idea what to change. Everything is brand new and changing the jets, float level has done nothing. In the first video, it was when I first put the big bore kit and mikuni carb on and it ran fine. But when I was riding the bike every time I switched gears I would lunge forward and the bike would lag hard. And the video afterward is the bike when I tried to fix what was going on.

She won't start :(
First bit is closed choke, second bit is open choke. So I've been fixing up this motorbike a while now and I believe I don't need to do anything else with it. How ever, it's still not starting I believe it is a carb tune issue I have it 2 1/2 turns out for aifuel ratio and the idle screw is fine. Just need to know what could the problem be and how I can fix it.

2023.05.31 06:43 IncognitoRules Engine trouble

So firstly I want to thank those of you from my last post who helped me with the antifreeze leaking problem.
Right now, the car isn't leaking anymore and the fluids are finally staying where they're supposed to be!!!
Now down to what brings me to post again.
Today on this very chilly and very windy California evening, I went out to work on my camaro and fix the little things like new hoses to the air cleaner. The previous owner said "recently restored" when I found the car but I guess his take on 'recently restored' means he just hid all his mistakes in a clever way.
The hoses that go to the air cleaner are loose and that's very true for the pipe that goes to the manifold that's connected to the air cleaner through an aluminum tubing. This one I can literally pull it out of the hole it's supposed be in and I'm not sure if that's a good thing. The second hose I guess goes to the crankcase as the assembly kit online calls it crankcase and blah blah blah. This one has a what used to be rubber hose clamp thing as it now feels like hard plastic. Today I installed new hoses and rubber hose and they fit great although I can still remove the manifold pipe.
Basically these things are new and I'm not sure these have anything to do with what's going on right now.
As I went to fire up the car, I let it warm up after many failed attempts at idling, I keep hearing the engine making a weird kick drum like thump before it shuts off. Another one is that the engine I think sputters put then shuts off or makes some wierd choking noises you hear old cars in movies make. I also saw smoke come from the carb which I'm pretty sure was backfire but not certain.
I'm not sure what any of this is and I'm definitely sure it's not good. I've never heard engine knock so I wouldn't know what it is if that's even related. Also one more thing is I hear random clicking in a rapid rhythm and feels like it's clicking with the speed of the engine. Also the engine is making rhythmic stutter noises when I finally got it to idle. It idles then rises and repeats and sometimes. So it would be like
dddddddDddddddDdDDdddddDddddd
What's causing these noises and also is my carb the cause of my rough idle? It doesn't open and close on its own. It stays in whatever position I set it to and just stays that way without ever changing regardless of pushing the throttle or idling.
Sorry for the long read as always but like some of you know I like to be as detailed as I can for you guys.
One last thing. Can someone who owns one of these 77 camaros or close to the year send me a video of how these cars should sound when idling both hot and cold? I need to hear the difference to tell if my car is idling properly or not.
Thanks and sorry for the long read again 🙏

I'm not a mechanic but I do a little with the 1986 toyota 4x4. I ordered a manual weber carb, open the box and you literally have a pull cable to install. Did I order the wrong one? Will I regret not getting the electric choke? The truck is for average use and hauling a lil gear.
