I found one live bed bug (it was killed) and then I found three dead ones. My mattress now has two plastic mattress covers. I bought a steamer and steamed every baseboard and crevice in my apartment. Then I removed all my fabric from my apartment and washed it at a laundromat and tossed it in the dryer for an hour on high heat— I found no feces or eggs and only had bites show up yesterday. Is there a chance it’s coming from the unit beside me and I don’t have some hidden infestation?

Every single time no matter what character im playing if the exit gates open and im killer everyone escapes. The exit gates are always miles apart and even if i do have someone on hook by the time exit gates open im literally losing points if i camp them to get even 1 kill. As i get higher mmr i start realizing that 8 hooks to kill everyone as killer is completely unreasonable against survivors who make little to no mistakes and only works in lower ranks. They can finish gens in under 40 seconds. If i commit to a chase 2 gens get finished. If i dont commit i lose by attrition as they tap each gen to get 20% to 25% progress done. I know this is a long cope paragraph but im gonna detail how my normal match goes for tips to see what im missing.

1. Get into match lethal pursuit activates chase one get a hit, get a down gen pops.
   
2. Put guy on hook find gen 3/4s way done chase someone get a hit, gen pops get a down 2 gens pop
   
3. 3 gen camp(if i get lucky and am able to keep the closest together) until i can get a down then 1 of 3 gen pops and its already over for me. If i get 1 kill, both survivors not on hooks go up to guy on hook and tap him until i either try and grab them off or more likely, the grab glitches im stuck in place and it counts as a slash i get body blocked to oblivion 1 kill 3 escapes.
   

I have a good friend ‘Joan’ of 30+ years who’s husband recently developed PTSD after being out of the military for 15 years.
Joan and is a nurse who also studied double majored in psychology, so she’s well informed about her husband’s condition, but it’s understandably difficult for them and their family but recently her husband has been doing worse.

I live in south, my electric bill usually 60-90$ in my apartment during spring and winter, but when it gets warm it goes up to $240+ per month. My boyfriend haven’t been together for long, but I always felt we were really close and clicked really well. I’m 20, he’s 25.

Both of these blown out arguments have lasted hours, sometimes even entire half days, just fighting back and forth and trying to be heard. • The next day we fought again about the same stuff and it also lasted quite some hours, and it was basically a repeat of the day before. We then make up after and say we trust each other and give each other more chance.
• The day after the next day, we did in fact fight again and also lasted multiple hours and was regarding the same topics, and throws up every single other fight we had and tries to use the same reasons with no premises from the he used the previous fights we had. We then make up after and say we trust each other and give each other more chance.
• Then we went 1 entire day without fighting!!! (catch is that it was because he was at work and works busy and long 12 hour shifts!) The day was peaceful and I thought we were doing well.
• Yesterday, I can barely remember but I believe we didn’t fight, but it’s possible we did. I truly cannot remember, I have memory problems that are induced by trauma, mental illness, and probably the amount of weed I smoke lol. We called for so many hours, typically we call for upwards of 15 hours a day because he’s a bit farther from me right now, but we only called for around 6 hours. He went quiet suddenly and I assumed he went to sleep, but after an hour he messages me and it isn’t the case. He is dry and I can tell something is wrong.
• This morning I woke up at exactly 3:33am in terrible pain from the chronic gallstone attacks I get, and went outside to go smoke weed to relieve the pain. I go to text my beloved man and I see he’s blocked me and my messages won’t go through, but on socials it showed he’s still in a a relationship with me. I panicked hard and started messaging him on a different social, begging to just talk and understand what happened. He’s at work, messaged me on his break 30 mins ago, and we fought yet again, because he said: “you can go ahead and unadd me again whenever you want im not arguing with you today, my days already ruined yo, you arent loyal and for some reason you wanna keep unfollowing and following people Idk what the fck your issue is really but its really annoying. Dont text me back, just fcking unadd me dude, god knows how many other dudes you talk to behind my back.”
All of these arguments have stemmed from his paranoia.
Now we are trying to work through things. This is not the only issue, but when we aren’t arguing, he has been using lots of positive reinforcement to me when he feels i’ve been loyal to him.
But this is where it gets worse, he told me a few days ago that if he finds out i’m playing with him, he will come to my apartment and end me then himself right after. I told him, “no you won’t, you’re too sweet”. He was laughing quietly abt it and got very serious and was repeating how he definitely would, but if i’m scared then i must be cheating because if i wasn’t then i wouldn’t have a reason to be scared.
I mostly believe he would attempt this.
Can someone please tell me their thoughts or opinions and maybe lend some advice for me:(? If you have any other questions, I’m happy to answer. I just hope he doesn’t frequent this subreddit. I feel like i’m out of options.

In order to build a good game, the goals need to be defined clearly and ordered along a hierarchy of values. This is almost so obvious that it's stupid, but I think we often forget the obvious and need to be reminded of it.
I've gotten a great deal of poorly qualified feedback from other subs which had compromised my design focus. They might say things like "players are not going to enjoy that; this will confuse them" when in reality they're categorically projecting their limited personal experiences and tastes (usually narrativist).
From my estimation, the crunch crowd tends to be equally distributed among gamist and simulationist design preferences. This understanding improves the quality of my feedback, but it's still necessary to further distinguish their preference and experience in order to determine how aligned their feedback is to my design goals. So I might reduce each general goal to the following first principles:

• In Narrativism, the pace comes first. Players who prefer this are primarily motivated by how tension and conflict develop as well as how active their overall participation is in the story. A broken pace compromises the collaborative effort and everything else falls apart from there.
  
• In Gamism, the numbers come first. Players are motivated by conflict and challenge and so their choices need to be meaningful. In order to satisfy this goal, the game's internal logic must be quantitatively balanced, have numerically distinct properties along the axes of risk and reward, and limit the GM's range of subjective judgment.
  

We don't need to argue the details of these goals. Maybe you have a different idea of what the first principle is, but I would still stand my ground and assert these concepts as among the fundamental pillars. At any rate, I want to focus specifically on simulationism, which is what I know best.

• In Simulationism, the aesthetic comes first.

So what do I mean by "aesthetic"? I mean that stylistically presenting the rules and mechanics is the most direct way to immerse the player in the setting. To make an illustration, you may have seen a medieval video game or ttrpg that uses modern looking menus or text (Skyrim). Something about the game might have felt off and you couldn't get into it. You may have also seen a game like Fallout 1/2 or Kingdom Come where all of the menus and text are given designs which match the setting. Those simple things which have no bearing on gameplay mechanics draw you in to the experience and steal your attention away from the outside world.
As an aside, I never messed with 4th edition because the cartoony warcraft aesthetic broke me out of the game world; it gave a plastic impression as opposed to an organic fantasy of wonder, exotic dangers, and exploration. It made me think of seeing damage numbers floating above the enemy's head and watching them flash to indicate a hit has been scored.
This all brings me to the seed of my discussion. I had developed a certain set of mechanics which were simple to calculate and provided tactical depth. They played out wonderfully in my initial tests, but something was missing. The numbers and the calculation process wasn't giving me the intensity and impact I wanted. There were enough layers of abstraction to take me out of the imaginative headspace and I realized I was testing a game, not a dynamic environment.
There is "20 damage" and then there is, "He smote upon the sallet, splitting skull and spilling blood and soul alike, such the Black Prince could see the brigand's final thought: regret."
About a year and a half ago, I had developed a system that removed all explicit quantities. With the exception of the dice itself, there were no visible numbers (logic can always be translated to quantities). Only high level language was immediately available to the audience. This meant that once you memorized the procedures, you were ALWAYS immersed. A halberd spike to the face had intuitively immediate consequences: relieved sinuses; the brightness setting of life being lowered a significant degree; a sudden and complete disregard for bills, chores, back pain, and marital problems.
Humor aside, numbers and calculations break you out of that rhythm. My design philosophy for that model was unified with the mechanics. So I posted it to the other sub, and all the narrativists jumped in and said "too complicated" as they do for everything. Then all the gamists jumped in and said "I like the cronch I like calculating, this won't appeal to a lot of people". Meanwhile I was under the assumption that the population at large hated math. I don't, but I would much rather the guts of an engine be kept under the hood for the purpose of simulation.

Im abt to be a junior this year and I’m doing my fall semester at a community college then transferring to a university to complete my bachelors in Psychology. My plan is to finish that then work towards a master and hopefully a phd and I might work while I do those. My parents are gonna try paying for my tuition but I have no idea how much they can contribute yet. My university is just 30 mins away but the living condition just isn’t worth it. Siren Root is a mod I recently had the pleasure of playing during a one off campaign for a character and I have to say, it is probably the best custom dungeon I’ve ever played in Skyrim. When we and 4 other aquatic experienced adventurers are hired to retrieve a flower from lake honrich, we fall victim to a cave collapse as we are grabbing the flower. We find ourselves lost in an ayleid ruin and quickly find ourselves in danger from supernatural forces. We must find a way to get out of the ruins with our allies but must be careful of our choices along the way because there are consequences to the story and gameplay.
The dungeon itself is broken up in several different interior cells and is set up much like many DND style dungeon delves. The dungeon is also filled with some of the most engaging and creative traps and hazards I’ve seen, utilizing timer based speed puzzles and underwater labyrinths to really sell you on the danger you’re in. Besides all of that, the custom assets are all beautiful, the layout is complex and every room and corner feels fleshed out and like it has a purpose. The characters and the story are just as fantastic as the level design, joining you on your adventure will be a confident imperial sailor, an Argonian alchemist with mysterious past, a Motherly Breton Wizard and a Maomer Rouge, all of these characters had the perfect balance of cartoonish and serious personalities, these are a great example of how you can build a 3D NPC.
The story is masterclass for elder scrolls dungeons, Simple but elegant, what starts off as a fetch quest turns to us being trapped and having to find a way out which then turns to us being hunted by an evil spirit which then turns into us having to defeat it with our allies yet that climax has several different outcomes depending on the choices made with your team and earlier on when you encounter the siren spirit.
The gameplay is perfect, they incorporated climbing mechanics which really made this feel unique, the puzzles were all very engaging and most of them difficult. Bring a ton of waterbreathing potions however because some of the underwater sections are quite long and are meant to be completed by the time your start getting drowning damage anyway. There are also some really neat looking cutscenes that were done for this that made this slightly more epic and the segments of controlling other characters for their puzzles was done well too.
The only things I can pick apart at are the enemies, not even close to a big deal but I wish they weren’t just generic skeletons with ancient Nord weapons, even just giving them elven weapons would have made the undead more immersive, ideally though, making a AE version of this replacing the skeletons with Wights from the Cause would be fantastic. But if this is the worst thing I can think of to say for this Mod, that should be your clue on how truly special I found it to be.
All in All, Fantastic mod, I expect it to be considered one of the GOAT for Skyrim mods. 10/10

I am moving in with my boyfriend in a month, which is great, and I'm excited. But there's two problems:
1) We're moving into the upstairs apartment of a house his parents own and live in. This means we will have our own private space, but his family is very close (and his extended family is big) so I'm expecting there to be more family socialising than I'm personally used to, as my family isn't near as healthy as his. I'm pretty bad at saying no and setting boundaries, so even thinking about how much socialising with strangers I'm going to have to do (I've met his family twice before, so I don't know them that well) is scary. I also like to have a lot of alone time. The one good thing here is that my boyfriend also likes his alone time and we like to spend time together just doing our own thing, so helps.
2) Both times I met his family, I was very quiet and reserved cause, well, we all know what meeting new people is like.. I was extremely nervous the whole time, and these strangers being my boyfriend's family did not help as it just added more pressure. My boyfriend said his parents like me and they think I'm nice, but he's mentioned a handful of comments from them about how "quiet" I am. Today, my boyfriend told me that his mum said she's excited to get to know me better because "the last two times we spent more time together than with them". Some maybe important context here is that we have had to go long distance over the past year and are now moving in together for the first time. For financial reasons, I have to move back to my home country as I had been living abroad and my parents won't take me in. His parents having newly renovated an apartment was a coincidence, as they were planning to rent that space out anyways. We are also both in our early 20s and don't have a lot of money, so when we did get to see each other in real life throughout the year, it was usually only for a few days, so we naturally spent a lot of time together during visits. These comments from them, and the fact that they're my boyfriend's parents make me feel so much pressure about interacting with them, which then makes me worry about how they're perceiving me and so on.
So, my question is how do I comfortably navigate this? I want to have a good relationship with them as they are wonderful people and are also my boyfriend's parents. We have a thriving relationship, and so does he with his parents so I know it would mean a lot to him. But I'm so scared of messing up and how they might be judging me that I feel like I will mess it up and they won't like me.

Will was excited, the past few weeks seemed to herald a new change in Ilicia’s and Agrana's relationship. He had been surprised when came back that first day to find Agrana eating and chatting idly with Ilicia. He was more surprised when Ilicia told him what had happened and when Agrana came to him to assure him of the end of her attempts on Ilicia's life. Will had nearly exploded trying to contain his shock.
It was now commonplace to see Ilicia and Agrana chatting when Will was not around. Will suspected his grandmother did something to facilitate this, but she assured him she had done nothing other than explain her relationship with Karva. Will was suspicious by nature, and as the Princess's Man, he was obligated to be suspicious of all things having to do with the princess. And an Ogdeshi taking a sudden interest in the princess and serving her was suspicious.
Will knew Agrana was a woman of her word. But he also knew her as a master manipulator, and he had confidence in the fact that Agrana would see little wrong with killing a large number of humans to get what she wanted. The thought of Ilicia coming to harm sent blood rushing through him in a way that threatened to bring on the natural occurrence of the Orcish blood rage.
Will was excited. All of this rushed through his head as he walked with Ilicia. He knew he was worried, and he hoped today would provide some reassurance for his ever-active imagination. Today was the day after he completed his training and he was to spend the entire day with Ilicia. She walked next to him, her arm through his, as he led them both through the twists and turns of a forest path that ended in a strange building seeming to grow out of the wood of a gargantuan tree.
The door opened automatically as they approached to reveal a wood elf-man in clothing that seemed to emanate a sense of regal energy. The elf smiled at them and bowed. "Master Will, Princess Ilicia, welcome and please do come in."
Ilicia smiled back at the man. "Thank you sir."
"How is the family Jullian?" Will asked as he stepped through the door, making it feel three inches too small in all directions.
"My wife is well, she is in the kitchen cooking as usual. I will be serving you today as my children are not here at the moment." Jullian said with a quick bow. He led them through the building which Ilicia realized was far larger than it appeared from the outside. They passed several other couples and groups that were seated at different tables as Jullian led them up a sweeping flight of stairs and out onto a balcony that appeared to be several hundred feet in the air and protruding from the tree.
"Will, what is going on with this building?" Ilicia asked, getting a twisting feeling in her stomach as she looked over the railing.
"That would be my wife's fault, she does as she will." Jullian said to Ilicia with an apologetic smile. He bowed once more, and then turned and walked away.
"What is this place Will?" Ilicia asked looking around and noting more and more things that simply felt off. She opened her mouth to speak again as a silver platter with goblets of water floated over and unloaded its cargo before simply vanishing into thin air.
Will laughed at her shock. "Jullian is a wood elf."
"Even I noticed that." Ilicia said wondering where Will was going with this.
"His wife is a goddess." Will said with a smile at how quickly Ilicia's jaw dropped. "We are not sure what she is a goddess of, but she has a penchant for cooking and brewing and she loves Jullian with her whole heart. She fell in love with him when he found her wounded in the woods and stayed by her side, talking of his home in the woods of his youth, he cooked for her and cared for her for three weeks before she could rise on her own."
"Wow." Ilicia said, "Do you know how she was injured?"
"No,and I am not sure anyone knows except Trina. That is the name she has chosen to go by. She also tells people that she is simply Jullian's goddess when asked what she is a goddess of. She is a rather interesting character, if she ever comes to say hello I am willing to bet you will like her."
Ilicia smiled at Will and Jullian reappeared. "So what would you like to eat?"
Will smiled and rattled off a list of food which all sounded strange. Ilicia looked around to see where he had made his selection, but Jullian simply smiled at her and told her to ask for anything she desired. Ilicia realized what was going on and ordered her favorite food from home. Jullian smiled, bowed, and vanished through the doors once more.
"Anything we want huh?" Ilicia asked with a mischievous grin on her face.
"She is a goddess. But I will warn you Ilicia, last time I started trying to challenge her in her ability to cook anything, well let's just say she is willing to humor most things. If she feels you crossed a line, she will let you know by making your food so spicy you taste it for weeks, and that's only after the second or third bite." Will said, his tone indicating he was speaking from experience.
"What did you ask her for?" Ilicia asked.
"My dad told me he used to eat at a place called 'micky dees' so I ordered one of everything from their menu, thinking I would have her stumped with food from another world." Will said and then looked up. "She made it all and delivered it to me, told me to enjoy, and told me if I ever asked her to make such ludicrous and disgusting food again, I would find myself unable to eat solid food for a year."
Ilicia laughed and smiled at Will as Jullian brought out a small cart loaded with plates of food he began to lay on the table.
They ate their food and talked about various things. When they were finished eating Jullina brought them dessert. Will turned to Ilicia and broached the topic of Agrana.
"Ilicia," Will said in a serious mood now, "why did you take Agrana as a member of your staff?"
Ilicia was caught a little off guard. "What do you mean? Why would I not take her onto my staff? Her skills are self-evident."
"Oh, I know. I remember well who first taught me other than my father." Will said this with no anger, simply curiosity. "But I would still ask why you did this. Is the protection I provide lacking? Do you anticipate me leaving you anytime soon? I simply want to know what your reasoning was in making this decision."
Ilicia thought for a moment and then spoke. "I had several reasons, mostly I wanted her to not want to kill me. But since then I have come to some conclusions as to why having her around will be better than not."
Will nodded and Ilicia leaned forward taking his massive hand into both of hers. "I do not think your protection is lacking in any way. I am fairly certain that should I ever be kidnapped, you will tear apart the continent one rock at a time, laughing the whole way."
Will shrugged. The noncommittal way he agreed with herreminded her just how powerful Will really was. Ilicia continued. "The short answer is, you can never have enough bodyguards. The long answer is, I think that while you are the Princess's Man, you will begin to fulfill a far more important role in political functions once we return to the kingdom." She finished her thought in her head, "Hopefully that position is as my fiance or husband, and you can leave all the bodyguard work to Agrana."
Will thought about this for a moment, his eyes never leaving hers. Ilicia knew he was probably mulling over important thoughts, but a part of her wanted him to just look at her like that as he took her on the table. Ilicia shook her head and spoke once more. "So in addition to helping with my safety in that regard, if you leave to deal with the man who killed your father, I will still have a guardian."
Will nodded at this and seemed to relax. "Very well, but I want you to know if she ever makes a move against you again, I will kill on the spot."
Ilicia nodded, knowing from his tone that this was not a discussion but rather a statement of fact. That mischievous voice in her head also wanted him to command her in that tone. Ilicia blushed at the thoughts she was having and looked away from Will.
Will smiled at her when she finally got her blushing cheeks to cool. "So, we have eaten and now we have a whole day to ourselves. What would you like to do, Ilicia?"
"Well, I would like to visit your grandmother's library if she will let us." Ilicia said, remembering the room of books she saw Yilan in earlier.
"Of course." Will said with a smile.
Jullian appeared. "Is there anything else you would like?"
"No, Jullian it was fantastic as always." Will said with a smile.
"Thank you." Jullian said and turned to Ilicia. "If you have a moment my wife has requested a moment of your time."
"Of course Jullian." Ilicia said, turning to Will.
"I will wait for you outside." Will headrf down stairs on his own.
Ilicia followed Jullian through the building which only further exemplified how incredibly large the building was compared to its looks on the outside. When he finally led her into a kitchen that could have fed the entire castle she grew up in, Jullina bowed to her, smiled at the glowing woman standing behind a counter, and then turned to grab a tray of food and leave.
"Come Princess," the woman gestured to a stool set next to her. "Have a seat and talk with me for a moment."
"Of course." Ilicia said, falling back on court manners in this rather strange incident.
"Firstly, call me Trina," the goddess said, "and secondly, what do I have to do to make you forget your love of Will?"
Ilicia's jaw almost hit the counter. "What do you mean? Why would I ever do such a thing?"
Ilicia was angry, a deep anger that burned deep in her gut. Trina stopped what she was doing, knife paused mid-cut. "I care for Will, his father and mother both were dear friends of mine and always treated me no differently than anyone else. As a divinity, I have some small gift of foresight, and you need not be in love with Will. More importantly, he needs to not love you."
"I see why you wanted to talk to me only." Ilicia said indignantly. "Will would kill you."
"I spared with the boy once, and he very well might be one of the very few mortals who could kill a god, but that is beyond the point." Trina said with a calm voice of understanding. "I need to know what I would have to do, to what I would have to give you, to get you to remove Will from your life."
Ilicia panicked. She hated this woman. She looked into Trina's eyes. "You will have to kill me. I love him, there is nothing you could give me that could replace Will."
The goddess stared hard at Ilicia who did not back down. Trina chuckled. "Those Garrow men sure do pick firecrackers. You know there was a time where Will's father took one of my daughters on a date? She came home and said she would bless whoever he married because he was a handful. Then he went and married Yilan's daughter and they gave birth to a man who is by rights almost a god in terms of his ability and power."
Ilicia's head was spinning as she tried to follow Trina's words with her ears, and with her eyes the flurry of time-defiant movements her hands made. Trina paused again and looked Ilicia in the eyes. "You are a brave woman, and you will need to be. A time will come when the love you hold is used against Will, I hope you are strong enough to face the repercussions. Will is getting anxious, and I can not warp time any more than I already have without causing you harm. Take this and go to him, cherish him while you can princess."
Trina handed Ilicia a sweet roll and then hesitated before placing her hand on Ilicia's head and bowing hers for a moment. Ilicia felt a wave of energy wash over her. "Go forth with my blessing child."
Ilicia stood and left the kitchen to find Jullian waiting to take her outside. The sun was setting, where it had been morning just an hour or two ago. She looked back to the building and then to Will. She shrugged and slipped her arm through his. As she shared the sweet roll with him, Trina's words echoed through her mind.
One phrase in particular rattled her to her bones as Will guided her back to Yilan's library. "...I hope you are strong enough to face the repercussions."

Anyone overwhelmed? I understand it’s an open world game but I feel a bit lost.
The objectives are so far apart and the lack of linear gameplay, I feel I am doing something wrong.
I look at the guides as I am playing with a whirlwind barbarian and this who two handed wielding with the technique, and someone on YT explained about putting the opposite weapon in a slot etc. I am genuinely confused.

How to Use on whowouldwin

Honestly, Same isn't the most balanced character when it comes to battle-boarding. His giant size and powers make him pretty formidable. He most interesting fights are probably against mages or kaiju with a stipulation or two to the battle conditions. That being said he's cool as all hell and has some dope ass feats.

This isn't gonna be another base "Kuvira did nothing wrong" post, because she did. But that doesn't discredit her point in the slightest.
Firstly, the Earth Kingdom had been fucked over by everyone from every angle. First, the Fire Nation ravages them with 100 years of war. Then, Aang split off a huge portion of the Earth Kingdom into a separate nation all because he couldnt think if a solution with more nuance than "families get split up" or "the Earth Kingdom gets more punished for a war than the agressor". And the punishment point is especially painful as the Fire Kingdom basically got a slap on the wrist, meanwhile the Earth Kingdom is made to lose its territory because of a war it didn't begin. And to make matters even worse, this almost certainly nuked Kuei's already abysmal reputation, breeding even more separatist sentiment.
And then what does everyone do when this dumpster fire finally explodes? They do nothing. Korra doesn't help, Wu doesn't help, Suyin doesn't help. And that left only Kuvira, Kuvira went and stabilised the nation from the brink of death. She took on a job that only fell into her lap because the 3 people in front of her in line to do the job refused responsibility. And then, she's made to hand power over to Wu, who did nothing to help, arguably made things worse.
And now I have to address it, the camps. The camps are the only thing Kuvira did wrong, but they're a big thing. The camps were fucked and unjustified. There, there you have my admission. But, they don't discredit her point even in the slightest.
And the invasion of the United Republic was also incredibly justified, it was rightful Earth Kingdom territory and would've stayed such if anyone involved in its creation sat down for a second and considered an option that wouldn't separate families but would return the territory. Kuvira was just taking back what was robbed for them.
Also, Wu absolutely was not a capable leader, even by the end. His "redemption" did nothing, arguably made his character worse. Because not only is it just annoying to see more of LOK weird obsession with democracy and insisting it's the best ideology. It also just shows that he learnt nothing. His people couldn't stop themselves from seceding because their queen died, do you really think an election wouldn't tear the Earth Kingdom apart into hundreds of different directions?
I have much more important things to do but I'm making this because I'm bored and sick of the Kuvira slander. Kuvira is by no stretch of the imagination a morally good character. But she is by far the greatest Earth Kingdom leader we saw and all of her points (apart from the fascism) are justified and make sense.

My wife and I have been seriously considering a move to the area, gotten tired of life in the city (Portland/Seattle) and are enchanted with the valley and the people we have met here. I'm a musician and my wife is an artist, and though quite a lot of our work has moved online since covid we still love getting out and being with fellow artists. We haven't been able to spend enough time during the weekends and so haven't been able to get a good idea of things in the area, and are just curious about people's experiences. Obviously Joshua Tree and 29 Palms are very small, but I've lived in small towns (mostly Arcata, CA) and know how a special place can have at times a strangely wonderful arts scene than one would expect given the population size. My story’s not as extreme as many I’ve seen on here, and I’m thankful for that, but I do feel it fits.
He and I were friends for a year, started sleeping together, then he proposed we try something real. He was a widower and said he couldn’t fall in love again, but he was willing to try. I was someone so special to him. He told me what I had was all he could offer and I was the bees are dying at an alarming rate with that. He was perfect; so sweet, so thoughtful, made me feel adored. He told me he was smitten for me and he meant it. He was patient and funny and a big ol’ teddy bear of a guy. I could tell him anything and he was open with me. He handled my anxiety well and took so much care in reassuring me.
We were officially together for about a year. For the first six months or so, it was a dream. I truly think I could’ve spent my life with him. He started to get sober and told me I made him happier than he’d been in years, that I was a huge step forward for him and all these other sweet nothings. I can’t describe it better than feeling adored. He made me feel loved in ways I didn’t know possible. Then it all changed. I don’t know that it happened all at once or gradually, but it happened, and I woke up a week ago knowing I had to leave.
The first time he “disappeared” was for about a week in November. He didn’t fully disappear—he would text me a couple times a day, but not reply to what I said or engage otherwise. Always just a text or two a day, enough for me to know he was still there. He did this disappearing act once or twice a month after that. Sometimes it was random, but if we had a serious conversation, he would always disappear after those.
He was a heavy drinker when we met and I was always clear I didn’t care. I told him over and over again, he didn’t have to check in with me, he was an adult, it wasn’t my place. He told me he wanted to check in with me, it helped him hold himself accountable. He was getting sober, he felt so much better, he was doing well. I maintained that I didn’t care but I did not EVER want him to lie about it, and he assured me he wouldn’t. I don’t know how long he was lying to me—maybe from the beginning—but I eventually found alcohol hidden in his house and confronted him about it. And I did it calmly! He was defensive and it wasn’t until I came back the second time he admitted and apologized.
I had a moment I wasn’t proud of shortly after where I looked through his phone. The text exchange was from November, I assume the week he wasn’t talking to me, and he told his sister things were over between us and it sounded like he was explaining why a different date didn’t work out. I didn’t read further because I was angry, and guilty of looking at his phone, so I confessed to him and confronted him about it. His explanation was he thought we were over, things were rough in November, and why the hell would I look through his phone? Didn’t I trust him? I basically begged for forgiveness and he said something about how I needed to stop looking through his things (which is funny, because when I’d express I didn’t feel like an important part of his life he’d say I had free reign to the house. Is it free reign if I can’t open cabinets?).
He had a hard time being vulnerable, a hard time communicating. It was always surface level with him and even then, I didn’t get much. He would tell me he’s “got a thing to do” and that’s all the information I’d get unless I pressed. Sometimes I’d call him out on it and he’d agree to work on it, and he would! Until he stopped again and things went back to how they were before.
He told me outright once he didn’t see a future with me. I told him how much that bothered me, that I felt written off as an ex girlfriend already.
I spent the last four months asking to meet his friends. He always said yes, then changed the subject, and I never met them. Later he’d express annoyance that I kept asking.
Throughout those last six months, I would try and talk about these things with him, try and express how they made me feel. He always had a defense or an explanation, or he’d say the right things and his actions wouldn’t change. He eventually started sighing or laughing when I’d ask if we could talk. He told me there was always something to talk about with me and he was tired of talking. He maintained he told me upfront this was all he could offer.
I don’t remember when he stopped complimenting me. He wouldn’t go out in public with me unless I made a deal out of it. He would still do very sweet things for me, occasionally.
I don’t think it was ever intentional, hurting me. We broke up because I told him the truth; I felt crazy. I felt like he was two different people. He was still so kind and and thoughtful but at the same time, he lied and hid things from me and wouldn’t speak openly. I told him I was mistreated. The breakup was mutual. He told me he didn’t want our relationship to affect my mental well-being and it was starting to affect his to know how I felt. I apologized and he told me firmly I had nothing to apologize for, that he was tremendously sorry for what he unknowingly put me through and that I was an a amazing friend and significant other. That I had a good soul. That we would’ve lasted longer if he wasn’t “damaged.” He was so apologetic and I felt like maybe I finally got through to him. When I came to collect my things we were both in tears and hugging to put off the inevitable.
I made it through three days of no contact before I reached out. He told me how happy he was to hear from me, how weird it was to not talk. I asked if he wanted to take this time apart with the intention of getting back together, working in ourselves and rebuilding our friendship for a healthy future. He told me he was unsure of the future. He’s given up on a future altogether, not just with me. He said he knew he wanted me in his life in some capacity. He wants us to be friends for sure. He shared with me something his therapist had asked him that made him think and he wanted to reflect on that for a while. I replied supportively and he didn’t ever answer.
