2023.06.09 08:44 mzbacon Is homemade onion/garlic in honey syrup safe and/or effective?

My kids (2 & 4) are getting over a lingering cough. It’s only been for a few days, it’s not severe, their breathing appears to be unaffected, tested COVID negative, and they have no fever or runny nose. I’m not worried about it and I figure it will run it’s course over the next few days.
My parents have out-of-town friends who are visiting for a while. One of the friends,“Marcie”, heard the coughing and made a couple of natural cough syrups for them. They are both in mason jars, one with honey and whole garlic cloves, the other with honey and chopped onion. They have not been refrigerated, have been sitting out on the counter for a couple days (in a warm climate), and the garlic one has been opened and has a couple inches of head space. They have not been canned or sealed with heat, but my mom says that Marcie boiled the jars before she filled them.
I appreciate the gesture and the time and thought that went in to making these for my kids. That being said, I am skeptical towards most natural, homeopathic “medicine”. I also am wary with any advice that Marcie gives, as she’s a vocal anti-vaxxer, is deeply involved in a health supplement MLM, and is prone to discussing conspiracy theories.
I have told my parents that they are not to give my kids anything from those jars. My first instinct was there could be a risk of botulism. I trust my parents to respect my wishes, although they think I’m over-reacting.
I am worried that my parents will eventually ingest the syrup themselves as a health-boosting thing. They already have purchased some of the MLM supplements from Marcie in the past. I tried googling honey and onion/garlic syrup to see how it should be stored and if there are any risks, but all I’ve been getting are homeopathic blogs. Even those say the syrup should be refrigerated and tossed after so many days.
Marcie will be staying for a while, so I can’t toss out the jars without directly confronting her, which I don’t want to do. However, if the syrup is unsafe, I would like to inform my parents so they don’t take it themselves and risk their own health. Is there a risk for botulism or some other bacteria with these ingredients in this type of storage? Are there any resources I can use to show the risks?
Edit: I hope this is the right sub to post this question. If not, I can delete this.

2023.06.09 08:11 Kindly-Banana-7266 Lucira false positive?

Hi everyone,
I am trying to assess how to evaluate a positive on a Lucira rationally and responsibly. TIA for the feedback.
I flew 4 days ago (2.5hr flight) with an N95. Had COVID once last fall, and have had 5 vaccines (last one 2 months ago).
I have felt fine since, and I have been monitoring myself out of an abundance of caution. Since the flight, I am pretty confident that I have not had any meaningful exposures (KN94 or N95 when indoors, have only seen 6 other people briefly, none of whom have symptoms, plus layered on Enovid/CPC mouth washes; unmasked on 1hr daily outdoor walks, not close to others).
Yesterday (day 3 after the flight), I tested negative on a RAT. This afternoon (day 4 after the flight), to my surprise, I tested positive on a Lucira. Then immediately after, I tested negative on another Lucira and on another RAT.
What are the chances that the first Lucira is a false positive? I’ve read that Lucira has a false positivity rate of approx 2% but I don’t want to assume that I’m that lucky…
I will test again on (my last) Lucira tomorrow. If that’s positive, then I’m pretty sure I have an asymptomatic infection. If that’s negative, is that sufficient to conclude that I’m okay?
In the interim, I’ve got my N95 on whenever outside my room in case!
TLDR: symptom free and had one negative RAT on day 3 after potential exposure, one positive Lucira test on day 4 after potential exposure, followed by a negative Lucira and a second negative RAT. Is another negative Lucira on day 5 enough to conclude the positive was a false positive?

2023.06.09 08:07 ExamOrganic1374 Respiratory illness outbreak in Brazil

I've been searching aggressively for more details pertaining to the outbreak of respiratory disease taking place in Amapa, Brazil, and what I've found is of moderate concern.
First, in of themselves, the following facts relevant to this situation are rather unnerving: 1.) The incidence of these "Influenza Syndromes" appears to have originated in and initially mostly affected Amapa, Brazil. 2.) Vague reports of similar severe illness outbreaks across a steadily expanding geographic range, appearing to radiate outward from Amapa, have begun surfacing. 3.) There appears to be significant illness occuring both at high rates per Capita, and across a wide age demographic. 4.) The situation has deteriorated to the extent of: a.) Being declared a Public Health Emergency as of May 22. b.) Though I couldn't verify it with certainty at this time, it appears to be the case that hospitals across a growing area are becoming crowded with both pediatric and adult cases of respiratory illness.
I find this somewhat worrisome for two reasons: 1.) This pattern of emergence is strongly suggestive of a spreading novel virus. 2.) It coincides with an alarming chronological proximity to the recent and first ever documented arrival of H5N1 Avian Influenza A in the wild birds of Brazil followed by suspected human exposures/infections shortly thereafter, at the same time the country is experiencing a flu season featuring widespread transmission of Influenza A/H1N1_2009/pdm viruses.
There are couple different primary hypotheses as to what is the driving force behind this situation: 1.) A new COVID-19 strain. 2.) Persisting co-circulation of COVID-19, RSV, and seasonal influenza (Chiefly H1N1).
However, I am beginning to fear that something much worse may be afoot. The reports that many of the cases associated with this incident are testing positive for "H1N1 Influenza A" I find to be of no comfort, as it is distinctly possible that out a human reassortment event involving H5N1 and H1N1, a novel strain of H1N1 could emerge which yields a 'positive' test result for H1N1 while also possessing increased pathogenicity.
This scenario would be to catastrophic effect by allowing an epidemic of a novel influenza strain to "fly under the radar" during its infancy, initially delaying alarm in local health officials until cases mount and consequently, notification of global health authorities as well as aggressive efforts to contain it.
I can't say with any form of certainty that such a thing is what's happening in Brazil, but as of right now it's a very mysterious and sketchy feeling situation with very little data coming out that appears to not even be 60 days old.
Time will certainly tell soon enough.
But for now... Hold on to your hats.

2023.06.09 07:58 zantie Sequencing and Variants Update - [Jun 8th]

https://imgur.com/Yip50i1
Graph of subvariants and recombinants sampled in Washington state over the past five months, put together using data from GISAID and Nextclade Web v2.14.1. The dashed line represents the proportion of PCR positive tests that have been sequenced so far.
Note: The graph above excludes the most recent week of May 28th as it consists of only 10 sequences and is far too low to be useful visually. For the sake of transparency I am however including that week in the table below.
Five of the past twelve weeks are "incomplete", defined as fewer than 9 % of PCR positive samples sequenced. The most three recent weeks are "very incomplete", defined as fewer than than 5 % of PCR positive samples sequenced.

Table with most recent four weeks of data. These numbers will fluctuate with backfill, especially for the week(s) indicated as "incomplete" and "very incomplete". Values may not add up to 100% due to rounding.
Additional tables below illustrate changes due to recent backfill.

We're seeing a massive reduction in the number of sequences coming in since the Public Health Emergency ended in May. Fewer than 100 samples were uploaded in the past two weeks. Our state is at least still providing information but the dramatic shift in sample-size pretty depressing. It makes it very difficult to determine if what I'm looking at is normal variation or something significant.
The CDC Nowcast recently changed to posting an update every two weeks. I don't want to do that but it hardly feels useful updating you all when only 50 or so sequences have come in since last time. I'll have to think about this.
Repeated Notes:
It's definitely looking like we're going to get a recombinant soup. Hard to suss out which mutations to focus on again because there are so many and little info on which ones are actually significant. There's also the issue of how they may not interact with each other in predictable ways.
I hope to have something more focused/useful for these newer recombinant subvariants in the next couple of weeks.

2023.06.09 07:48 PvtBaldrick Used I-Pace Search (hints and tips)

Just in case anyone else is thinking of buying one, a few notes of what I discovered. (I'm in the UK looking at used RHD HSE models)
1) MY20 onwards has the new infotainment 2) MY21 Steering Assist was removed due to chip shortages 3) 360 cameras were rarely available during the COVID years for a similar reason 4) HUD disappeared MY22 due to shortages, reappearing on MY23 I think.
FYI Steering Assist is Jaguar's version of Autopilot designed to keep you in lane on highways.
Essentially if you are expecting a specific feature. Make sure it's on a used I-Pace before you buy or travel long for a test drive.
(I travelled 2.5 hours for test drive of one that didn't have Steering Assist which I wanted. The advert said it had it, but adverts are auto populated nowadays it seems by the selling website)
If looking for a high spec model a couple of years old, the best bet is to look for a Jaguar ex demo or ex management car. They quite often got options that aren't available (I've seen HUD on a few ex Jaguar management cars when it seems no one else got it)

2023.06.09 06:56 Fold_Happy Pharmacy Insurance and PA

My daughter has idiopathic hypersomnia. The treatment for IH is the same as for narcolepsy. CVS is denying the claim for the prescription that was deemed medically necessary last year when they initially denied the claim. I was told it would stay on file. The doctors’ office is basically done dealing with the pharmacy and insurance after the latest denial and have not filed an appeal. I have to file the appeal, which is fine, and after speaking with CVS pharmacy benefits, I understand why the doc is done.
CVS is denying the claim because the medication is only approved for three conditions- narcolepsy, OSA, and shift work sleep disorders. They won’t even fill it. I explained that IH and narcolepsy are very similar and the medication my daughter takes is listed by Mayo, Cleveland, and virtually every reputable provider as the first choice in treatment. They repeated that she didn’t have the three conditions listed and was not eligible for the medication. I asked what meds were approved for IH. The first option she listed was the brand name for the generic drug that my daughter was being prescribed and they were denying. Additionally, I explained that the 3 medications mentioned were all the same as the denied drug and the last option was rohypnol, which cannot be filled at a pharmacy.
CVS told me to submit an appeal, but submitting an appeal can still mean it is denied. Or we can repeat the testing and hope that she has one more episode of REM in one of the sleep stages so that she can be diagnosed with narcolepsy instead of IH. The algorithm is denying conditions and medications that were nearly identical. I assumed that speaking to a person meant critical thinking skills would make it obvious how ridiculous the whole thing was. Nope. They still didn’t understand.
CVS told me that the doctor should just file the appeal. I explained that they last year, all of the information was on file, and appealing a medically necessary condition every year was not part of their duty once they have already proven the medication is medically necessary, it is alifelong incurable condition, that requires no additional testing. CVS wanted to know how they were supposed to know my daughter still needed the medication. I told her that the prescription is how they know she still needs it.
I think pharmacy benefits have gotten so used to just denying everything and using it as a means of security. My insurance was not very happy to hear that CVS suggested solution was to repeat an expensive round of testing to justify paying for a generic drug that is standard in the treatment of a diagnosed condition. I got a Good RX coupon and since it is for Meijer, at least I am not giving CVS any more money than I already am. Sleep disorders tend to run in families. I could not figure out why my last refill for the same medication was only 15 days. It has something to do with the number of pills they will cover in a 30 day time period. I have been trying to stretch my 15 day prescription to 30 days, my daughter hasn’t had hers for a week. We are hella sleepy in this house right now. I just don’t understand how insurance is able to dictate the care that we receive to this extent. We see the doctor every 6 months so that the prescription can be refilled and they can prove to the feds that they aren’t writing fraudulent prescriptions. Can I file a complaint with someone in my state or federally?

2023.06.09 06:36 TYH81 Update on New Coughing Symptom 2 Weeks After Testing Negative

Didn’t cough much during Covid. And 2 weeks after testing negative for Covid, this new cough started and it’s not going away. It’s 2 weeks since it started.
Sometimes it is a wet cough with phlegm, other times it’s a dry cough that starts because of a throat tickle or a choking feeling.
Some days it’s worse. Other days it gets better.
Is it possible for Covid symptoms to develop after testing negative? How long does it take for it to go away completely? Tried many kinds of lozenges and it’s not working.
Coughs can be singular or in fits (similar to choking).
I hope this doesn’t turn into a long haul thing. I now cough more than I coughed during my whole bout of covid. It’s so strange.

2023.06.09 05:19 anastasiaraine23 Andy Balbirnie His Journey: Leading Ireland at Lord’s and Changing the Face of Test Cricket

Andy Balbirnie His Journey: Leading Ireland at Lord’s and Changing the Face of Test Cricket
Ireland’s struggles in Test cricket and the need for first-class cricket development
When his father picked up his captain’s jacket from the dry cleaner, Andy Balbirnie realised the significance of walking out for Ireland in a Test match at Lord’s. Balbirnie recalls, “I was going away and requested him to leave it at the dry cleaner’s because it was a little filthy from Sri Lanka. https://152526.ekcricket.com
“When he gave it to me again, he stated, ‘It’s hard to imagine you’re going to be leading Ireland out at Lord’s. It has yet to sink in since I hadn’t given it much attention. I’ll reflect on it in the future and say, “Wow, that was a very fantastic event. http://eklottery.in/
Ireland had a fixed red-ball schedule for the subsequent four years when Balbirnie was named captain in November 2019. However, the epidemic delayed his ability to captain them in a Test match until April 2023. He remembers, “I was honestly worried I wouldn’t get the chance to. “Covid put it off, dragged on for so long.” https://indibetindia.com
Last month in Bangladesh, the chance finally materialised, and two more Tests were played in Sri Lanka shortly after. When I mention that Balbirnie is the only guy to have played in each of their six Tests to date, he quips, “I’m a well-hardened Test cricketer now. “I didn’t think I’d get six Test caps at the beginning of my career, but it’s not a lot,” the player said. https://iplwin-india.com
“If we lose to England and are bowled out for 30 in both innings but still make it to both World Cups, that’s a win; that’s been our best summer ever.” https://indibet2.com
Ireland played six of the games and lost six of them, a dismal record. Eight players received their first caps over the last three matches, making them particularly difficult. For spinners Matthew Humphreys and Ben White, their Test debuts also marked the beginning of their first-class careers. https://indiacricketsite.com
Ireland has not held any domestic first-class cricket matches since the epidemic, concentrating their efforts and resources on the white-ball forms. The players are not treated fairly, adds Balbirnie. “You’re asking players to take the pitch under intense pressure without any first-class or red-ball experience.
“I know we have our limitations at home, and hopefully first-class cricket will start to filter return during the following few years, although if we’re going to start playing more Tests, we need to have something in place,” he said. We must better look after our players and ensure they aren’t merely thrown into the crucible of Test cricket. Even if it only occurs once every three years, games: North vs. South. https://melbetz.in
You may choose a team and learn about them with a red ball in their hands without it taking seven or eight games. We selected teams for the Tests in Asia based on what we observed in the nets and how players entered the pitch. https://www.indibeti.in
In the words of the board’s performance director, Richard Holdsworth, the next Test at Lord’s does not constitute a “pinnacle event” for Ireland. They will instead focus on the forthcoming qualifying competitions for the 2023 ODI World Cup in Zimbabwe and the 2024 T20 World Cup in Scotland. https://www.indibete.in
The qualifier versus Italy, which will be played in Scotland in front of perhaps 30 spectators, will be far more significant than the Test match, admits Balbirnie. We will do our hardest to obtain a win, and it is an honour to play against England at Lord’s, but it’s just one Test during the summer, so I don’t want it to seem disrespectful to England or the ECB. https://rajabets0.com
“Their top priority is The Ashes. They’ll probably view this as a glorified warm-up. If we lose to England and get bowled out for 30 in both innings but still make it to both World Cups, it counts as a victory and would make this summer our most fruitful one ever. I hope not, but World Cups are where we get the most fantastic attention on the international scene and at home, especially for a tournament in India and its benefits. https://melbetvip.in
Despite Ireland’s rise over the last 20 years, cricket remains a relatively niche sport back home. “We’re getting there,” Balbirnie says. “There’s a lot more club teams in the country now. I still don’t think we’ll challenge rugby, football and GAA [Gaelic football and hurling] for a long time if we ever do. But if we can be that fourth or fifth-biggest sport, that would be good. https://www.indibetvip.in
“Last weekend, while I was out in West Cork with my wife, Kate, I had two individuals approach me and say, “You’re Andy Balbirnie!” Kate couldn’t believe what they were saying when they said they were heading to Lord’s. It’s a modest step, so that’s fine. https://melbet1.in
Many secret cricket enthusiasts in Ireland are frightened to admit they are fans for fear that their GAA clubmates would make fun of them. But we are making progress.
Funding continues to be a problem. The ICC has included Cricket Ireland as one of the beneficiaries of its proposed revenue distribution model for 2024–2027; the board will receive a $5 million loan from the ICC in 2023 “to ensure it can meet its current financial needs,” with their annual earnings share expected to increase from about 2% to just over 3%. https://melbetindian.com/
“We’re receiving a good deal more than we typically do. I’m hoping that things will change for the better when the money comes through,” adds Balbirnie. The issue we face is that contrary to what powerful nations typically receive, we only accept a little funding through sponsorship. They may be able to survive without the ICC money, but we are incredibly dependent on it; it is our primary source of revenue. https://iplwinz.in/
The desire to host home matches at a brand-new, purpose-built stadium in Abbotstown, on the outskirts of Dublin, is foremost among Ireland’s long-held goals. The board hopes the new pitch will be finished in time to host matches during the 2030 men’s T20 World Cup, which they will co-host with England and Scotland. At Malahide, their primary home site, they virtually always lose money due to temporary infrastructure expenditures. https://10cricindian.com/
“I’m not sure it’ll happen in my career,” admits Balbirnie, “but I’d love to sit in the stands one day with Stirlo [Paul Stirling] and watch the young lads go at it against some of the best teams in the world.” https://152526.eklottery.com
Among those “young lads” are Harry Tector, their best batting potential, who will be carded at No. 4 this week, and wicketkeeper Lorcan Tucker, who was not included in the team for Ireland’s most recent trip to Lord’s. Despite Josh Little’s prominent absence—he is taking a break after participating in Monday’s IPL final—Andy Balbirnie is confident in his team’s ability to succeed despite low expectations. https://152526.ekcricket.com
He claims they may have a few players competing for spots in the Ashes. The strain England cricket players face from the media—pressure that we don’t meet—will be on their batters to score runs against us. We don’t have many players going through the system, and just three or four journalists watch cricket. The fact that they are redefining Test cricket while we get to compete against them is an incredible challenge.
It’s immaculate. We expect them to attack us, so all we can honestly hope for is the ability to respond with a punch. Nobody is going to bet on us to win in any way. We only desire that the boys participate in the activity we have grown to love. http://eklottery.in/

2023.06.09 04:33 ThrowRAPopRem9951 Meeting my [30F] BF's [35M] "testy/intimidating" mum [60F] for first time

I don't think it was just because of COVID that she didn't want to meet me for 4 years, because she met his sibling's gf during COVID closures. She's told me to not bother sending her any cards/letters. I've also overheard her say to my BF on the phone "I don't want to develop a relationship with her virtually." I do think that she has her own prejudices against me, but I'm not sure what they are.
I've speculated different prejudices she may have (I'm black, I come from a muslim/African background, I'm an immigrant, I'm overweight, I'm younger). I'm kind of done speculating atp and just want to keep an open mind when meeting her.
Anyways, he finally convinced her to meet with me; we live quite far away and this summer will be the first time I'm meeting her.
He gave me several hints over the years that she can be tough to deal with, and I never really understood what he meant. According to him, she has already formulated opinions on me without meeting me or getting to know me. She thinks that I avoid conflict, have anxiety and will give in to others easily. All of which are points my bf has defended me on, and he believes she is projecting traits of his ex's on me. She also thinks I'm racist by virtue of my family being Muslim....(I'm aetheist).
He's also told me that she thinks I need to lose weight and may bring that up (directly/indirectly). Apparently, she loved his ex but has had many issues lately with his siblings' most recent partners.
There are two things I'm seeking advice on.
  1. I can handle most situations well, even when I'm put in a tough spot, but I don't think I can handle being told "you should lose a few pounds". I don't want to sour our relationship, but what would be a clevefunny way of responding and changing the topic on that?
  2. He tells me that his mum will find something to test me on. I informed him that for my own comfort and since this is the first time I'm meeting them, I'll be staying at a hotel. He thinks she will find a way to misinterpret my decision to stay at a hotel. With this one, I am planning to just be honest and say that "as this is our first time meeting, I feel comfortable with providing my own accommodations." According to my bf, she's not the type to be upset/offended, but she'd try to make this out to be my problem (ex. you're an anxious person, you are secretive, etc.)
TLDR; meeting bf's mum for first time; she's been stalling the meeting for years, and she has got some prejudices about me. Trying to keep an open mind. According to my bf, she'll want to test me by telling me I need to lose a few pounds and asking the reason why I chose to stay at a hotel instead of at their house. In these two situations what's a good response that keeps things light and moving off these topics?

2023.06.09 04:31 cornponeskillet 9 weeks & just tested positive for c0vid

Hi everyone, I'm first time pregnant and first time posting here. I'm 9 weeks tomorrow and just tested positive for covid. Does anyone have any advice, or just able to commiserate? I'm so worried this will harm my baby. I'm trying to keep the fever below 101 with Tylenol within the recommended dosage.
I've also been taking 12.5mg unisom and b6 every night for the past 3 weeks for bad nausea and unsure whether I should skip that for now. It's so hard to be pregnant and feeling bad the last 4 weeks and now this on top of it. This is so hard :( Thanks in advance for any support.

2023.06.09 04:14 AutomaticStick129 Sharing my autism story.

I was 48.
My therapist asked if I’d ever been assessed, and I laughed it off. I didn’t think about it again, til I casually mentioned it in conversation with my Mom, thinking she’d laugh, too.

She did laugh, but not in the way I expected. She said, “Oh yeah, all your teachers were nagging me to get you tested, but I just told them, “He doesn’t have autism, he has ASSHOLISM! HA HA!”

And suddenly I had to review my whole life, my whole history and my whole relationship with my family. Life, as I knew it, collapsed.

My relationship with my family is never going to get better; they don’t believe autism is “a thing” and refuse to learn anything about it or accommodate me in even the most simple ways. I'm just and angry about my whole childhood. They knew I was struggling, they saw me struggling, and instead of getting me help - even when it was offered! - they beat and punished me for struggling.
I'm 53 now.
I overcompensated throughout my life, forcing myself to be social, masking like mad (though I didn't know that that was what I was doing, thought I was the only one), creating a persona of "kooky creative guy" using dialogue I'd memorized from tv, books and movies. Masking is a fulltime job, and EVERYTHING is research! I put SO MUCH time and effort into making myself "likeable".

That all collapsed when I lost my job as graphic designer for our local newspaper the first week of COVID. I stayed home alone for a year (The Happiest Year of My Life!!!!) til I could get vaccinated, and realized that in that time, I'd lost my masking skills. I can no longer fake that hypercompetency, and feel resentful that I ever had to.

I may tell you more about myself later.

2023.06.09 04:14 alpha_beta_marigold Any advice for road trips? Is this a bad idea?

Hi everyone, I got Covid about four months ago, and have been bedridden or homebound since then. I’ve been feeling a bit better over the last month or so and have been able to get out of bed most days and have meals with my family.
We usually spend summers at a family cabin on a lake. I really want to go again this year, but it’s a long drive: about 15 hours. Once I get there, I know I will be very comfortable and happy. But I’m afraid the trip will give me a major crash. Would love to get other people’s advice and perspective on this.
My plan is to turn the backseat of a king cab truck into a bed and ride back there. We did a test drive and it was very comfortable; I could almost fully extend my legs. We would break it up into three days and do five hours of driving per day and I could rest in a quiet hotel room the rest of the time.
However, there’s no way of getting around noisy public bathrooms, the stimulus of being out in the world, and the walk in and out of hotels. Furthermore, driving is noisy and jostles your body around a lot.
There’s nothing that I want more than to relax in a lakeside cabin for five weeks. And my family really needs it too. But I have to admit I’m apprehensive. I’ve had a number of really bad crashes that have left me barely able to walk or talk. I don’t want to risk that again.
Would love any advice, or to hear other people’s experience with these sorts of things!
My main symptoms are heavy fatigue and noise sensitivity. I’ve also got POTS (not as bad as others) and occasional headaches.

2023.06.09 03:43 bunny510 Tested positive in 3rd trimester- help

I’ve (35w/FTM) been sick for the last three days, and just thought it was bad allergies. Sore throat and cough, headache in the first day.
I didn’t think too much of it until my cousin sent me a picture of her positive Covid test (I was around her at my baby shower this past Saturday.)
Naturally, I took an at home test and it came up positive pretty quickly. I gave my dr a call (had to leave voicemail on nurses’ line) but is there anything I need to do?
I’ve been staying hydrated and resting. I haven’t been around anyone. I can’t look at google anymore because the only things that pop up are still birth and miscarriages, and I really can’t worry about that.
Is there any kind of medicine I need to be taking? Should I worry about going into labor earlier than expected? I’m freaking out please help me

2023.06.09 03:28 anklerainbow What are you supposed to do when youre in an asthma flare but cant afford your maintenance inhaler?

F25, 5”3 130lbs, Caucasian. I have asthma, dysautonomia/long covid, and interstitial cystitis. I take ventolin as needed and Claritin for allergies. I was just prescribed Flovent as a maintenance inhaler but I can’t afford it.
For some context: my asthma is usually quite mild but I’ve had a cold since Friday that mostly presented as nasal congestion, watery eyes, and fatigue. Those have all cleared up besides some remaining congestion. On Monday I developed a bit of a dry cough and then it progressed to shortness of breath. My throat and upper chest feels tight but almost as if it’s muscular? Like it definitely doesn’t feel like my heart or acid reflux. It feels inflamed.
My asthma has been worse. I’ve been taking my ventolin about 2-3 times a day vs only ever needing it like once a month normally. It’s really hard for me to take my ventolin because the side effects can be unbearable. I often get high tachycardia, tremoring, and what feels like adrenaline rushes. It keeps me up all night and makes me feel sick.
I went to the ER two nights ago because of the shortness of breath and they didn’t do any testing. They didn’t even do the pulse ox. They said to keep taking my ventolin and to take the Flovent inhaler I’ve been prescribed. The only problem is that I am struggling a lot financially and cannot afford the Flovent.
Is there anything I can do? Or should be doing? I live in Canada also.

2023.06.09 03:10 NoLawfulness1606 Not Moving for 6 Months

So for context I'm a 22 year old Male 2nd Year University student in the UK and for the last 6 months I have done practically nothing. You may ask yourself what does that mean in reality? Literally NOTHING. Coming into 2023 I got sick and spent a couple days laying about at home, which spiralled into depression. When I came back from winter break I was still badly depressed and had no energy or motivation to get up or do anything, even though I knew there was a lot to be done. I've failed all my classes spring and summer semester plus autumn semester tests. As the weeks continued marching forward, work continued to pile up and I couldn't face the reality of catching up so I let it continue to slide. I abandoned all my hobbies and extra-curricular stuff. I've ignored friends and family for weeks and months, too anxious and embarrassed to explain my predicament. I barely held my part-time job for the first 3-4 months before I stopped showing up and got fired. At home I was too lazy to cook the majority of the time so I've burned through all of my money buying takeaways and ready meals, looking for an easy dopamine hit from fast food. I lost money by failing to cancel direct debits that I should've stopped but never got round to. Not wanting to be awake or aware of my problems also caused me to develop an awful sleeping pattern, waking up in the late afternoon to evening, and not sleeping again until the early morning. I also became violently addicted to my phone; youtube, scrolling instagram and twitter numbed my conscious mind to the responsibilities that I had. I've had intermittent waves of motivation to change and get better but they've only lasted a few hours or days in most cases before I return to old habits. Through all this I've become quite an anti-social introvert, not wanting to see or be seen by housemates and friends if I can help it, too embarrassed by the way I've been living - not showering, eating poorly, not brushing my teeth. Which on that point has led to my gums receding and bleeding when I have managed to brush (although it did get better when I was home for a couple weeks in Easter) which is something I NEED to fix before I loose teeth n shit.
I've dealt with depression and anxiety on and off and to varying degrees of severity since the summer of 2020 now, I've had some good times but alot of bad. I've never received proper help, mainly because I've been too afraid to speak up to my family and close friends due too fear of judgement from them, which is in part due to the history of suicide and poor mental health on my mums side of the family my mum having committed suicide when I was 6 and thus I don't want to be open about my own struggles for fear of re-opening old wounds and trauma. Also embarrassment of myself at not being able to take care of myself as an adult, but having done so in my former years through late high school with a very mature mindset, when my dad wasn't around much leaving me and my younger sister (by 3 years) to live alone. Also I've always refused the idea of medical solutions, and often therapy is expensive and the results can be mixed. Previously I tried online therapy during the pandemic but I never got past the first couple of sessions due to its expense. I also have a tendency to once I'm feeling better I'm quick to try and pick up where I left off, and often quickly crumble under the weight of things by not taking more time to address the root causes of my issues and ease into life again.
It's sad for me in a way especially these past 6 months but more so the last 3 years to feel like I've missed out on some of the best years of my life, whilst seeing other peers and friends really thrive and come out of their shell, getting to explore the world, take on new exciting challenges. Yet I've been stuck in a cycle of poor mental health and poor decisions because of that - not letting me put myself in position to take advantage of opportunities, and actively self-sabotaging - mainly poorly spending money just to get some short-term dopamine through food or drugs and alcohol. But also not doing what I know will help, shying away from it because I know it'll be more difficult than just burying my head in the sand. But often it's been tricky to try and lift the fog of depression which makes you feel extremely lethargic and apathetic towards doing anything.
What I've really felt too is the lack of purpose with which I've lived my life over the last few years, which has added to the cycle of depressive thoughts of hopelessness and vice versa. Dropping out of my first uni during covid is where my depression started, with awful panic attacks and depressive downward spirals which put me in a really dark place, dealing with suicidal thoughts almost daily. Since then I had things to work towards but I've never really known what exactly I'm living for, or studying a degree for and the same fire that I used to feel burning inside has been gone since those days, I used to have a real passion for politics and history and was quite active and engaged but since that passion has dried up, the care for the world and developing a nihilistic view due to depression really took that away in large part, not allowing me to feel like I had a vocation or career path to work towards which I felt invested in and deserved to be there. I really miss that feeling of caring about the work you're doing, and being happy to put in hard work because you care about the topics and outcome of such work.
But here's where I'm at; -£50 on top of my maxed £1,500 overdraft, no job and 7 days away from being failed out of my 2nd attempt at university. On top of not having a room to call my own when I get home, either my dads shed turned outside room or my aunties spare bedroom. I haven't had my own room since I left my childhood home in 2017, living in living rooms and sharing bedrooms since then besides this year when I got my own room at uni. That's not a plea for pity or sympathy just a real look at my current standard of living. I hope this will be my rock bottom, where I can look back and be proud of myself for how far I've come and achieved.
If anyone has any advice, wise words, relatability or their own story or success and how they dragged themselves back up I would love to read it, in a way to somewhat disprove the irrational parts of myself that no one cares and it's only me doing this poorly and playing catch up to my peers lol.
I hope to come back and add an update to when I'm doing better, mainly for myself to track my own journey but also anyone interested or that might benefit from my story in the future! :)
