I haven't been able to find much information about this online. I have been maxing out my Roth IRA contributions for the past few years, but this year I decided I would be better off making deductible traditional IRA contributions instead. I'm in the phase out MAGI range for TIRA, and calculated how much I could safely recharacterize and did a partial recharacterization of my 2022 contributions in early 2023 (prior to the tax deadline and prior to filing on time).
I understand that my recharacterization will be reported on forms 5498 and 1099-R next year since I performed the recharacterization in 2023, but as this would have reduced my taxable income for the 2022 tax year, I believe I need to amend my 2022 tax return and should be receiving an additional refund. Do I have to wait until 2024 to file my amended 2022 return, or is there a way to file the amended return this year without the 1099-R?

FYI: We are likely going to go-dark on the selected days of protest, and I'm pinning this until it's over.
To boil-the below down, if Reddit leadership gets it's way, the community of /BucksCountyPA will slowly become less-used, splinter, and grow apart. Moderators will see less incentive to moderate, users will want to engage less, and this will spiral until a new platform is found... but we all really like the platform Reddit gave us and we don't want that to happen.
We have nearly 20k people here that have had great conversations, chats of hobbies, best of , nature, games, local events, and information sharing for safety. I really like our community, and I'd hate to see a greedy company ruin it.
As many are collectively lose faith in Reddit's ability to lead an open platform, I recommend you join the /BucksCountyPA Discord Server. It's no substitute for Reddit, but it's a nice gathering place for the community to come together with richer interactions and more personal than Reddit. It just had it's first birthday! There's many active users, tons of channels, and fun conversations.

What's going on?

A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .
This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.

What's the plan?

On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.
The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.
What can you do?
  1. Complain. Message the mods of /reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on /reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.
  2. Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at /ModCoord.
  3. Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!
  4. Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.

Hello everyone. Last week I received. A love letter from the county assessor. Our property taxes went up 64%. I have successfully challenged our assessment 2 out of 3 times over the years. Last time I protested was during Covid but it was pretty clear cut, I had purchased the house a couple of month prior to the assessment, so hard for them to argue anything but the sales price. The previous time I successfully challenged I was able to meet with someone, provided a PowerPoint deck and was able to get the number down to a rationale valuation.
This time, I have to file on line. We are making improvements to the house, but most of those are still in flight so in my mind should not be included. This all seems like a huge money grab by the city/county. Yes property values exploded last year but the market seems to have cooled. My boss/friend in another location told me he has hired an attorney in the past. Wondering if that might be the way to go.

Maybe it's a bit too early to start making predictions, as there are still draft workouts/prep to complete for the team. But, by now, we all have the contours of what potential options are out there for the Blazers, so I think it's fair to put your predictions out there for what you think the team will look like going into next season.
I'll start...
On draft night:
-Blazers take Brandon Miller or Amen Thompson at #3. (Note: I think Charlotte would be foolish to pass on Scoot. If Scoot somehow falls, you take him and then go into "trade Ant for a starting wing" mode. But, the rest of this assumes Scoot goes #2.)
-Blazers take James Nnaji as a project big with major upside at #23
-Blazers trade #43, Nassir Little, and Keon Johnson to the Nets for Royce O'Neale. (Note: this is the exact type of trade Sean Marks and the Nets made the last time they were trying to rebuild from the ashes of a failed attempt at team building).
Free agency:
-Re-sign Matisse Thybulle to a 3-year, $18 million dollar deal, with a player option on the third year. The first year starts at $6.25 million.
-Re-sign Drew Eubanks to a 3-year, $10 million dollar deal, with a team option on the third year. The first year starts at $3.25 million.
-Re-sign Jerami Grant to a 5-year, $150 million dollar deal, no options. The first year starts at $30.5 million.
-Re-sign Justise Winslow to a 2-year, vet minimum deal, with a team option on the second year.
-Guarantee Skylar Mays deal
Rotational changes:
-Shaedon takes over for Anfernee as the starting two guard. Ant gets unleashed as the microwave scorer off the bench that he's probably destined to be.
-Amen/Miller starts at the three. As Chauncey would say, "We did a lot of losing to get this guy, we might as well play him." It also allows them to quicken the learning curve so they're as ready as possible going into the playoffs.
-Trendon, Jabari, and Justise battle it out for the backup power forward slot. Royce O'Neale can slide down to the four as well, as needed, which is why I prefer him as a trade target.

TL;DR: The only way to have low taxes in a high GDP society is to replace the taxes with income from either exporting resources, banking, or trade. These cash infusions are impossible to create at a large scale abd are usually determined by geography.
For the purposes of this argument, we will define a low tax, high GDP society as a country with both higher per captia GDP and lower tax revenue as share of GDP than the USA. This leaves only 3 countires. Just like high tax, high GDP counties, these low tax, low GDP counties also have extensive public programs in healhcare, education, and infrastructure. Lucky for us, each of these represent a discount way to achieve high wealth with low taxes, none of which scale.
1) UAE: They fund their social spending by exporting oil. This tends to produce authoritian societies which smooth brained dictators waste money on lavish bullshit and will fall apart the instant the market for their export disappears, no matter how much they try to diversify.
On top of not being sustainable, it can not scale. Not only does it require that your society to literally be on top of a bunch of resources, but it also requires that the countries importing your resources to choose to buy your resources rather than enslave the locals to extract those resources and simply take them.
2) Ireland: They fund social from money make by being a tax haven, much Lichtenstein or the Cayman Islands. The model is that everyone puts their money in your banks to avoid taxes, and you take a tiny cut of it, and this is what finances social spending instead of taxes. This is the only method that can work independent of geography, but it can only work on a small scale because the money they make is tiny in comparison to the tax dollars they cost everyone else. You can only have so many people taking a small cut, the more people taking a cut, the smaller the cut they will get. This is simply not scalable.
3) Singapore: They fund social spending through money from being an international trade hub. Singapore has the highest trade to GDP ratio and second largest port in the world. Rule of thumb is that this is only viable if a European colonial power has ever tried to make the area into a port, so this is simply not an option to the vast majority of people and countries.
This is the most important one because a foundational pillar of beief in neoliberalism is that anyone could be Singapore if they lowered taxes and regulations. This belief is demonstrably false by the fact that no one who wasn't already a global trade hub has been able to make the Singapore model work.
Despite Singapore's low taxes, it is hardly a neoliberal dream come to life. There are many, many laws regarding personal conduct that are strictly enforced. The government of Singapore also owns 90% of the land, 80% of the housing, huge amounts of stock in an array of comapnies, and a massive sovergn wealth fund. It also has universal health insurance coverage and goverment ownership of 80% of all hosital beds. That's a lot of public ownership for a captialist utopia.
There is simply no way to make a high GDP society without providing a lot of services, and those services must be paid for. And unless you have a rare geographic advantage or have worked out your parasitic niche as a tax haven, you need to fund those services by taxes. The promise of wealth through low taxes and private ownership alone is only believable if you are economically and historitically illiterate.

2023.06.04 20:44 MaxCatMeow Is anyone else still waiting to hear about their property assessment appeal from 2022?

We purchased our first home in spring of 2021. In 2022 the local school district filed an appeal to our property assessment, as expected. We had our hearing last August—didn’t attend as it seemed pointless. Then after that… nothing.
I haven’t heard anything since the hearing and I regularly check the Allegheny county property assessment website (the status has been “appeal heard” for months now). It appears we’re in limbo with the same assessment as before, for now. I know there was a lawsuit about CLR and I guess our purchase is one of those affected.
Is this just the way it usually goes or is it due to the lawsuit? The lack of communication from the county seems odd, yet not that surprising I guess. Every month I’m making sure to put aside extra in my savings to cover the expected tax increase, but I’d love to know when that actually will happen.
Is anyone else in this same boat? Is there anyone at the county I could contact?

My tax lady did my 2022 taxes and said I have until October to pay them back. On the IRS site it even says for California that Orange County has until October 16th to pay. However I got a letter saying I have to pay by the 26th of this month, and I’m in the middle of filing for bankruptcy and getting emergent car repairs. How can I contact the IRS to point out their own site says the 16th of October? Or have they decided I have to pay sooner because I owe a small amount or something? Im afraid to send them paperwork in showing their own postings with all my information and then they decide I have to pay anyway and will be charged a late fee by then.
Advice? I may have to scramble to get the money somehow and put off the final payment with my lawyer again. 😞

2023.06.04 18:39 ncpolitics1994 Does Collin and Denton counties trending right in 2022 mean anything for Texas in 2024?

Republicans outperformed their 2020 numbers in 2022 in the DFW suburban counties. Republican incumbents likely helped, but still, the Democrats still have a ways to go in Texas.
Abbott won Denton County by 12, and Collin County by 10. Even a scandal plagued Ken Paxton won Denton by 11 and Collin by 8. I realize these are statewide races and turnout was lower, but it suggests the Democrat trend in these areas may not be as fast as thought. For any shot at Blexas in 2024 you likely need at least Collin to flip. I could see Blexas in 2028, but I think Trump and Cruz are both favorites in Texas for 2024. I wouldn't even rule out Cruz doing better than he did in 2018.

I have RLT set up and my spouse and i are trustees. My lawyer also set up testamentary will and trust besides this RLT. I have a rental property and a primary home, brokerage account , 401K accounts both spouse and i posses. Now funding my trusts 1. Creat a quit claim deed and transfer my rental to RLT 2. Create a quit claim.deed and transfer my primary home to RLT. Some say create a land trust and set up LLC assignment.it applicable for the rental property as well.
  1. Assign beneficiary for 401K as RLT .needs suggestions if it's right direction?
Step 1 & 2 which one i should register with county records. If i register the land trusts deed with county? Privacy is not gone ? Also how the land trusts -llc - living trusts are linked ? This is for asset protection layer. If i transfer my brokerage title to trusts (change ownership), how to file taxes every year? Since we both are in w2.
If i have my rental property title is transfered to LAND TRUSTS - LLC -RLT ( income for trusts exceeds $600 ) then you got to file taxes for trusts every year. Should I file 1040 ,1041 every year ??please chime in with your thoughts. Thanks and happy to be here in reddit forum with lot of great people.
