2023.06.05 00:39 iAhMedZz What do you guys think about this boy? I'm going to use it as a Linux server for storage, hosting websites (light traffic), maybe plex, and will be my cloud for personal data. I'm a bit skeptical that the processor spec sheet looks too good for $143. This is used Device BTW

I'm mainly looking here at the raw processing power, but please correct me if I should be looking at other aspects. 10 Cores / 20 Threads at 610 Watts seems too awesome for this price, what is the catch here? I looked for other processors for similar prices and the best thing i came across was i7-4790 and i3-10100, which by comparing numbers, seem to be inferior only except for DDR4 support. Also, As per my usage, would the processor age be something I should worry about? There is also another workstation for less price (-$30) that uses 2x E5-2620 (total 12 cores / 24 threads) and 910 PSU but I guessed that's too much power and E5-2690 has better base clock speed. submitted by iAhMedZz to HomeServer [link] [comments] |
2023.06.04 23:38 tnpeel Safe to expand pool?
So I've got an oldish 6x6tb raidz2 pool which is around 90% full, which I understand isn't very good. I just ordered 6x8tb drives to expand it by adding another raidz2 vdev. Is that a good plan given the how full the current vdev is or would I be better off making a fresh pool, moving the data to it, and then using the old set of 6tb drives to expand the new pool.
My use case is a home NAS for movies, pictures, etc... I'm running TrueNAS Scale. I have a 30 drive server chassis with 128gb ECC RAM and Intel Xeon CPUs; it's overkill for my needs but I got a killer deal on it.

2023.06.04 22:15 PlutonianPluto Unable to dial boot XP and 98
Good evening all, hope you’re having a nice Sunday!
Here’s my doubt: I’ve been putting together a Retro machine for myself and I’m in the final stages, and testing dual booting 98 and XP.
However, when I try to install 98 first and then XP second, I’m met with a blinking cursor of death. I’ve tried install XP both from within 98 and from DOS and it always ends up the same. But if I install both individually it seems to works just fine? I’m very confused here.
For the record these are my specs:
ASRock 775Dual-VSTA BIOS: v3.10
Intel Core 2 Duo E6700
1GB
[email protected] GeForce 7600GS
Creative SoundBlaster Live 5.1
I’m trying to install both on the same drive, and would prefer that if possible. Currently testing on a 30GB IDE. I’ve tried both making separate partitions and not, same result.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Edit: Title is supposed to say “dual boot” but phone auto-correct disagreed.

simple use case for docker full os
docker full os can make better gaming expirence
because docker full os kali linux rolling (debian testing) have newer mesa driver than debian stable , so it make game in docker full os better. the step are : - run the ali-linux-docker-full-os sh sudo docker run -ti --device=/dev/dri:/dev/dri \ --privileged --cap-add=ALL --device /dev/snd \ --volume /dev:/dev -v /dev:/dev --group-add audio \ -v /varun/docker.sock:/host/varun/doc -v /:/media/prime \ --env PULSE_SERVER=unix:/home/usepulse/pulseaudio.socket \ --env PULSE_COOKIE=/home/usepulse/pulseaudio.cookie \ --volume /home/usepulse/pulseaudio.socket:/home/usepulse/pulseaudio.socket \ --volume /home/usepulse/pulseaudio.client.conf --publish=0.0.0.0:3351:3351 \ --publish=0.0.0.0:51:51 --group-add video --volume="/tmp/.X11-unix:/tmp/.X11-unix" \ --env="DISPLAY" -e XAUTHORITY=/root/.Xauthority \ --name dockerfullos-001 imageid tipe lutris - lutris will run in host os - setting the lutris and play the game :)
docker full os can sutitude the vm
because docker full os is a native os like chroot so it has a native performance like the host, how to do it ?, it very imple
method A, acces all docker full os apps from host
```sh
run the immage
sudo docker run -ti --device=/dev/dri:/dev/dri \ --privileged --cap-add=ALL --device /dev/snd \ --volume /dev:/dev -v /dev:/dev --group-add audio \ -v /varun/docker.sock:/host/varun/doc -v /:/media/prime \ --env PULSE_SERVER=unix:/home/usepulse/pulseaudio.socket \ --env PULSE_COOKIE=/home/usepulse/pulseaudio.cookie \ --volume /home/usepulse/pulseaudio.socket:/home/usepulse/pulseaudio.socket \ --volume /home/usepulse/pulseaudio.client.conf --publish=0.0.0.0:3351:3351 \ --publish=0.0.0.0:51:51 --group-add video --volume="/tmp/.X11-unix:/tmp/.X11-unix" \ --env="DISPLAY" -e XAUTHORITY=/root/.Xauthority \ --name dockerfullos-001 imageid ``` we can use rofi or cairo-dock to lunch the docker full os apps
- using rofi
- type rofi --show run
- select the apps ex =vlc
- vlc docker full os apps with run directly from the host os
- play some movies / videos / audio with that vlc :)
- using cairo-dock
- type cairo-dock
- cairo-dcok will launch to host os
- launch docker full os apps fro cairo-dock menu :)
method B, we can access full gui of docker full os via xrdp
how to do it 1. run the docker image sh sudo docker run -ti --device=/dev/dri:/dev/dri \ --privileged --cap-add=ALL --device /dev/snd \ --volume /dev:/dev -v /dev:/dev --group-add audio \ -v /varun/docker.sock:/host/varun/doc -v /:/media/prime \ --env PULSE_SERVER=unix:/home/usepulse/pulseaudio.socket \ --env PULSE_COOKIE=/home/usepulse/pulseaudio.cookie \ --volume /home/usepulse/pulseaudio.socket:/home/usepulse/pulseaudio.socket \ --volume /home/usepulse/pulseaudio.client.conf --publish=0.0.0.0:3351:3351 \ --publish=0.0.0.0:51:51 --group-add video --volume="/tmp/.X11-unix:/tmp/.X11-unix" \ --env="DISPLAY" -e XAUTHORITY=/root/.Xauthority \ --name dockerfullos-001 imageid
- edit the xrpd config in that docker full os sh nano /etc/xrdp/xrdp.ini # change to port to the open port 3351 # it will make the xrdp ip 127.0.0.1:3351 # restart xrdp server service xrdp restart # start pulse audio pulseaudo --start
- install kdrc (rdp client) in host os
- conect the xrdp using kdrc with the xrpd ip
```text
kdc setting
screen setting = 1024x800 audio = in this computer --- pulse audio 32bit color :) ``` 5. enjoy :) we can use docker full os with full gui in krdc :)
docker full os can use for simple cloud computing / cloud gaming
how to do it ?, it very easy 1. run the docker image, we can run multiple docker full image in single server - terminal 1 ```sh sudo docker run -ti --device=/dev/dri:/dev/dri \ --privileged --cap-add=ALL --device /dev/snd \ --volume /dev:/dev -v /dev:/dev --group-add audio \ -v /varun/docker.sock:/host/varun/doc -v /:/media/prime \ --env PULSE_SERVER=unix:/home/usepulse/pulseaudio.socket \ --env PULSE_COOKIE=/home/usepulse/pulseaudio.cookie \ --volume /home/usepulse/pulseaudio.socket:/home/usepulse/pulseaudio.socket \ --volume /home/usepulse/pulseaudio.client.conf --publish=0.0.0.0:3351:3351 \ --publish=0.0.0.0:51:51 --group-add video --volume="/tmp/.X11-unix:/tmp/.X11-unix" \ --env="DISPLAY" -e XAUTHORITY=/root/.Xauthority \ --name dockerfullos-001 imageid
change xrdp and ssh port accordingly :)
how to change ssh port
nano /etc/ssh/sshd_config
change the port to 51
- terminal 2 sh sudo docker run -ti --device=/dev/dri:/dev/dri \ --privileged --cap-add=ALL --device /dev/snd \ --volume /dev:/dev -v /dev:/dev --group-add audio \ -v /varun/docker.sock:/host/varun/doc -v /:/media/prime \ --env PULSE_SERVER=unix:/home/usepulse/pulseaudio.socket \ --env PULSE_COOKIE=/home/usepulse/pulseaudio.cookie \ --volume /home/usepulse/pulseaudio.socket:/home/usepulse/pulseaudio.socket \ --volume /home/usepulse/pulseaudio.client.conf --publish=0.0.0.0:3352:3352 \ --publish=0.0.0.0:52:52 --group-add video --volume="/tmp/.X11-unix:/tmp/.X11-unix" \ --env="DISPLAY" -e XAUTHORITY=/root/.Xauthority \ --name dockerfullos-002 imageid
change xrdp and ssh port accordingly :)
- terminal 3 sh sudo docker run -ti --device=/dev/dri:/dev/dri \ --privileged --cap-add=ALL --device /dev/snd \ --volume /dev:/dev -v /dev:/dev --group-add audio \ -v /varun/docker.sock:/host/varun/doc -v /:/media/prime \ --env PULSE_SERVER=unix:/home/usepulse/pulseaudio.socket \ --env PULSE_COOKIE=/home/usepulse/pulseaudio.cookie \ --volume /home/usepulse/pulseaudio.socket:/home/usepulse/pulseaudio.socket \ --volume /home/usepulse/pulseaudio.client.conf --publish=0.0.0.0:3353:3353 \ --publish=0.0.0.0:53:53 --group-add video --volume="/tmp/.X11-unix:/tmp/.X11-unix" \ --env="DISPLAY" -e XAUTHORITY=/root/.Xauthority \ --name dockerfullos-002 imageid
change xrdp and ssh port accordingly :)
```
each docker full os will run natively and independenly
we can acces it from the ost os with ip localhost:xrdp post (127.0.0.1:3351) with kdrc client :), we can also accest in from diffierent gnu linux computer in the same lan / wifi local network with the ip from host os that give by the router explampe 192.168.43.1 etc and xrdp port :) with kdrc
exaample xrdp
dockerfullos-001 = 192.168.43.1:3351 dockerfullos-002 = 192.168.43.1:3352 dockerfullos-003 = 192.168.43.1:3353
example of ssh
dockerfullos-001 = 192.168.43.1:51 dockerfullos-002 = 192.168.43.1:52 dockerfullos-003 = 192.168.43.1:53 enjoy the docker full os for cloud computing :), all the apps fro docker full os will run natively in kdrc in the client compuputer :), for gaming we can use emulator (ps1, ps2, psp, mame etc) , steam , lutris, wine etc :)
wine / lutris fix
wine / lutris sometime will error in docker full os, how to fix it 1. open lutris 2. setting the game with lutris 3. in the game menu , select wine regristry 4. edit the hcu ----- wine 5. add key X11 DRIVER 6. add string "UseXVidMode"="N" 7. add string UseXVidMode ----- edit the VALUE to N 8. add string "UseXRandR"="N" 9. add string UseXRandR ----- edit the VALUE to N 10. close wine
2023.06.04 17:42 Weary-Effectz Took apart PC now can't reassemble
First, I'm not a builder. I learn as I go and up to right now, I'm stuck. I should start by explaining what originally happened that led me here..... This is a Legion T5 28IMB05 equipped with 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7-10700 Eight-Core and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Super. I bought this about a year and a half ago and from day 1 it had weird issues like on boot up it would sometimes say, no operating system found. A couple of on and offs and poof, it would start up.
But most recently, my young son was playing a game and he said the computer shut down. I tried starting it up and nothing would happen. Literally, nothing, no light no sound no power at all. I checked the usual suspects and eventually got to the point of pulling the power supply and using the paperclip test and it passed. So I took that PSU from the Legion, popped it into an old IBM I had (so old in fact it came with Vista.....) and it turned on. So then I took the IBM PSU and plugged it into the Legion (I only plugged in the 24 pin connector and a 4 pin at the top left of the mobo (I'm new to this and have no idea what that powers.....) and it seemed to start up fine in that the fans spun up and the lighting system started pulsing as it always did (but not the fan on the heat sink). OK, so I took the Legion PSU and put it back into the Legion and it turned on! Well, the lights and fans did. But again, I only plugged in the 4 pin at the top left (says ATX3 on the board there?) and the 24 pin. So then I took the components one by one and started plugging them all back in, to see if it would continue to run.....
I first plugged in the SATA drive for the HDD and it started fine.
Then I plugged in the GPU and again, started up fine. Mind you, no monitor is plugged in at this point.
SOoI then moved on to what I think was the last thing to plug in. There is an 8 pin connector, top left, that is just to the right of the 4 pin. It also says ATX-something on the mobo but is being blocked by the heat sink I believe so I can't read it all.
Now my issue: the connectors I have from the Legion PSU are not at all labeled. There are two 4-pins that together can fit into that 8 pin (and the only others that make up 8 pins are one connector with 2 pins and another with 6 pins but I can't see that they would align at all into the 8 pin socket so I assume it isn't those). Anyway, I plugged in the two 4 pins and the computer started, the fans started AND the fan on the heat sink but now with a monitor plugged in, there is no signal coming to the monitor. The last thing I will mention is that there was a funny smell coming from the boot up when those final two 4 pins were connected.
I can't figure out what is bad here. The mobo? The GPU? Something else? Any suggestions would help a lot, from explaining what those connectors are, to any ideas on what has failed. FYI< I did take this PC first to a local repair shop that has very high ratings and the guy apparently looked at it and said, it's fried, and not worth fixing (I wasn't there so I have no idea how he made that assertion).
EDIT: here are pics, hope this is allowed?
2023.06.04 15:01 LawzE23 Build Request in the UK, old machine died after 8 years!
What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
My last build unfortunately died last night, the motherboard gave out and while I can find a replacement for a i5-4690k its definitely time to enter 2023 and start mostly from scratch again. Main uses for the build will be gaming with Football Manager my most played game but also quite a fair bit of Microsoft Flight Simulator & the upcoming boxing game Undisputed which is in early access. Ideally I'd like a top end machine that'll last quite a while and can be upgraded consistently.
I've been looking at the following benchmarking for Football Manager which suggests that I'm looking at Ryzen 9 or Intel i9 for the top performance from the processor.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12vp32qrHivL-_auW9D0pp-F7ZvrvQlqtBgfcSOL8n5I/edit#gid=653803864 I also work from home as a developer using code and have need for multiple chrome tabs open as well as large spreadsheets & SQL databases if this makes much difference.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
I'll be able to spend around £1000-£1500.
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Immediately
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Tower w/o GFX (already have 2070) and I have a PSU (AX760i) if it works still for this build.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
United Kingdom
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
I think I might be able to salvage some parts from my previous build but would like some advice. I currently have a 2070 card which I'm looking to keep for now and not include a new GFX as part of the build. Hopefully I'll also be able to use my AX760 Corsair PSU with this build, although if things have moved on that much I'm willing to buy a new PSU.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Down the line I would be interested in Overclocking, I did some basic on my last machine, mainly CPU. I did some mild overclocking with my last i5 processor but its not a massive need to do, ideally I'd like a machine that's newer and supports upgrading in the future so the latest MOBO socket/DDR5 is what I'm looking at but I've not kept track of how PC building has moved on since I built my last machine.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
I'm also not yet looking to upgrade monitors and will be using 2x 1080p monitors, in the future this is something I'll upgrade but for now looking at MOBO, RAM, Processor, SSD, Cooling & Case & anything else I've completely forgotten. WiFi and Bluetooth would be nice on the MOBO but I'll ethernet in most likely anyway to the machine. The last machine was watercooled with Corsair H100 but I'm not bothered about watercooling again unless it makes too much sense these days.
What type of network connectivity do you need? (Wired and/or WiFi) If WiFi is needed and you would like to find the fastest match for your wireless router, please list any specifics.
WiFI included but I'll wire it via ethernet as well, WiFI incase I decide to move house/room and need to connect.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Would be nice to have a glass sided case as those seem to be popular these days. Not overly bothered about RGB. Would like the build to look neat inside with not many visible wires so a case to hide is nice.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
Yes, windows 11 unless I can upgrade from my old SSD which is still working.
2023.06.04 12:38 SnowMacaronss Downsizing from ATX to mini ITX, what should I do with the current system?
I've had my ATX form factor pc now for many years but now I'm looking to make the switch over to ITX. This means most of my parts won't fit and I'm looking to sell them. What I'm wondering is if it's smarter to sell the whole system as a package or sell everything else besides the graphics card. (where I live I can easily sell the pc without a graphics card as well)
The parts in my current system are as follows:
Case: Be Quiet! Pure base 600
Motherboard: Aorus Pro Z390
CPU: Intel core i5-9600K
Ram: Gskill Ripjaws DDR4 3200 MHz 16 Gt
GPU: Asus Geforce Rtx 2060
AIO: Corsair Hydro series H80i v2
Fans: 3x Corsair LL120 RGB 120mm
I'm mostly playing League Of Legends if I play anything at all, and I know that game can pretty much run on a potato gpu. So, is it smarter to upgrade just the CPU since I need to buy a new motherboard anyways or is it smarter to just keep all the parts I have and just get an LGA 1151 socket itx motherboard, or is it smarter to just sell everything and build totally from scratch?
I just bought a refurbished rack server to replace my Synology DS920+ running some docker containers.
The server is a DL360 G7 with 2 Intel Xeon X5650, 36Gb DD3 and 4 HDD SAS 450Gb with a P410 SATA controller.
My use case would be to use docker in an automated gitops setup (Flux, local and external DNS setup, certs manager, etc).
What would be the best setup?
I was thinking in Proxmox with ZFS RAID 10 setup for PVE host and VMs OS. Then, for the k3s cluster, what would be the best storage setup? Can I still use my Synology NAS for that? I was thinking to create a Ceph iSCSI in Proxmox and just use that.
Or, would I be better off with a bare metal and no ProxMox? I don't need HA for any of the apps I'll run, so no real need for more than one k3s node, unless it's a completely stupid idea to use a single node.
While ProxMox would allow me to play with new VMs, I'm unsure whether I would really need that.
2023.06.04 09:00 PHDinGenius why are there no gaming benchmarks for server grade cpu's like the Intel Xeon W5-2465X
so as title says, im keen to see gaming benchmarks for large HEDT cpu's by intel, against something like a 7800x3d. or 13700k. im not expecting it too blow them out of the water by any means but im interested in gauging the performance of Q1'2023 HEDT cpu's or even and AMD 5975WX vs gaming desktop cpus.
because of the large multi channel bandwidth memory support, and multi access cache levels (i think its called Mesh caching) i would suspect these cpus to have fairly good Single core performance, making them quite good at pulling frames for the graphics card. especially the threadrippers large cache size, overclocking the single core boost speeds on these types of cpus, would effectively allow for a higher avg gaming FPS, possibly making them usefull for multiple generations, instead of us upgrading from as an example, a 3600x to a 5600x, to a 5800x3d to a 7800x3d just to achieve a 10-20% avg gaming performance boost, which i believe is tied to cache size (obviously) and single core performance and generation IPC for single core, for cpu fetch and delivery operations to the graphics card, memory instructions, etc.
if this is the case, that these cpus large memory bandwidth busses and cache's why dont we just move to HEDT and buy the cheapest of the lot in here, instead of buying 7950x's and 7800x3d's and upgrading them every year and selling your old stuff. sell the 7800x3d, buy the 8800x3d. OR just by an intel HEDT or amd Threadripper
i feel as though intel and AMD are striking or removing gaming benchmakrs of these CPU's on the internet. because i cant find any.
Oh, and if you have a 7800x3d, post up your OC results and ZT's. i saw some benchmarks with a 5800x3d with 4400mhz ram uncoupled from the IF and it pulls more frames every time you raise the memory frequency. but alas on ryzen 7000 after 6000mhz DDR, the uclock struggles and has to be divided by 2 of the mclock. so trying to pull more frames by locking Fclk and relying on the large cache instead of the memory latency is not feasable as the latency will be heavily retarted due to this Uclock limitation, as far as im aware anyway.
2023.06.04 08:56 shaman-warrior Expected higher returns on the clblast
Hello,
TLDR: with clblast generation is 3x slower than just CPU. EDIT: Problem was solved. I didn't leave room for other stuff on the GPU.
While my GPU is at 60% and VRAM used, the speed is low for guanaco-33B-4_1 about ~1 token/s. For a GPU like 6800 XT shouldn't I be able to squeeze out more?
2023.06.04 02:33 Suey036 Need some advice for my next setup please!
Hi all! I'm not very experienced with building a pc, there's no friends who can help me with this nor any near shop where I live. My only option to upgrade my current pc is to buy a prebuilt one online atm.
My goal is to play at 1440p with a solid framerate of at least around 80 or above. Mainly focused on a heavily modded Skyrim modlist but also many incoming AAA games for at least the next 3-4 years.
I've been checking prices for a while in most sites in my country and here are some offers I consider decent, would love to hear some experienced opinions please :) Sorry for the big incoming list, the spoiler option just hide the text but is stil lhuge XD
