Speculation on Character Ascension Materials for Natlan (part 2)
AUTHOR'S NOTES: Hello! This is part two of my speculation into what Character Ascension Materials could be available in Natlan, my reasons for including them, and what they could mean within the overarching story/theme in the Natlan Chapter.
Link to Part 1: https://www.reddit.com/Genshin_Lore/comments/136my8m/speculation_on_character_ascension_materials_fo
Keep in mind, these are all speculation - no leaks or spoilers involved. Just me having too much time, doing research, and learning more about Mesoamerican Cultures.
Side Note: I am not an expert in Mesoamerican Cultures, so I could get some information wrong. Please feel free to correct me.
Thank you mods for approving this type of content! Let me know if it does not vibe with the subreddit's rules, and I'll delete this post.

*needs to be activated by Pyro
Material Name: CACAHUATL
SHORT LORE: When exposed to extreme temperatures, the seeds within roast to a delectable, bitter taste. Their likeness is akin to an infantry of warriors, seasoned by the heat of battle.
Originally, all Cacahuatl were reserved only for the consumption of the Pyro Archon, as it is said that only she could tolerate the bitter seeds produced by the pods. Eventually, an observant scholar realized that infusing a generous amount of Pyro unto the pods would roast the beans into an almost palatable dish. This was refined even further by mothers eagerly awaiting their children to return from war, hoping to create a dish that would entice them to never leave home again. Of course, the Pyro Archon was all too pleased - new ventures in the world of culinary arts meant that this is yet just another resource that many would fight over.
Notes: The Cacao is an important crop in many Mesoamerican Cultures, but more importantly the Mayan Culture. Its beans were fermented and boiled to create delicious, frothy drinks that were infused with spices. However, it also served a more important role - current evidence imply that cacao beans were used as currency in ancient Mayan societies.
As a food, cacao was enjoyed by the royal elite as a drink, and was prepared hot, bitter, and frothy, often flavored with chili powder, vanilla, honey and allspice. Its uses were not just relegated to a dessert, however- the Mayans also used the beans as a form of currency, and even prescribed cacao as a medical remedy for ailments ranging from an upset stomach to kidney and bowel problems....Mayan merchants used cacao as a luxury good to be traded with the Tainos of Cuba and the Quechua of South America, spreading their love of cacao across Central and South America.
Those willing to fight were also deemed worthy. Aztec warriors were powered by cocoa. Drinking chocolate was a regular part of their military rations; every soldier on a campaign received ground cacao pressed into wafers, ready to mix into water.
“This drink is the healthiest thing, and the greatest sustenance of anything you could drink in the world, because he who drinks a cup of this liquid, no matter how far he walks, can go a whole day without eating anything else.”
HOW IT COULD FIT IN NATLAN'S STORY/PLOT/THEME:
  • The cacao beans (used to make Chocolate) was once reserved for use among royalty. Chocolate (to be more specific, Cacao Beans) initially functioned as a medium of transaction. After all, only the elite and those with information could cultivate these plants.
  • While it has nearly no associations to war, its use as a currency meant that it was just another form of resource that many kings fought over. In my speculation, Cacahuatl was initially something that the Pyro Archon enjoyed (a chocolate enjoyer). After all, you can't get chocolates unless you bake the pods and temper it well with a controlled fire.
  • Carrying over the symbolic meaning of Cacao, many people in Natlan would see Cacahuatl as symbolic of War itself - you can't get the desired chocolate unless you bake the pods in fire. Seasoned warriors probably enjoy a good Xocolatl during their down time, and gave them the energy boost they needed to continue the fight.

Material Name: POPOCA ORE
SHORT LORE: The sharp and dark-sheen rock has long been used as the material for ceremonial, religious, and military tools. It is resistant to rusting and dulling.
In ancient dance-tales, there exists a legend of a god before gods - before War existed Innocence. The Mirror Jaguar god, whose domain was innocence, was the one true shield of Natlan - under him all the separate tribes came together. With one mighty roar, his words deafened the noise from the chaotic abyss. Yet, sooner or later, his actions would only serve as a distraction to the chaos plaguing his land. It was only until the last shudder of his roar did his people feel the consequence of their complacency. His divine blood trickling into the earth, and hardening into black, mirror-like stones. Only one took up the blade to fight against the abyss - the Pyro Archon, who took on the title of War. Ironically, it is his blood, the blood of Innocence, that is now used to manufacture and perpetuate tools of War.
Notes: It would be an understatement to say that obsidian was a precious resource in Mesoamerican cultures. In fact, it was so commonly used that many dig sites for ancient Mesoamerican cities (such as Xochicalco and Tula) had dozens and dozens of workshops specifically for the production of obsidian tools. It was used in almost everything: from obsidian carvings to vanity mirrors, weapons of war such as Macuahuitl and obsidian-tipped arrows, to surgical (or sacrificial) knives - obsidian was the "steel of the New World". The Aztecs and Toltecs, in particular, believed that there was a deity whose skin was as black and reflective as Obsidian - "Tezcatlipoca".
Tezcatlipoca was thought to be the very personification of a polished obsidian mirror; indeed, his name in the Nahuatl language means 'Smoking Mirror' (the reflective properties of a smoking fire were often equated with those of a mirror). Tezcatlipoca was a creator god and a bringer of good and evil. As he represented the duality of change through conflict, a mirror was an entirely suitable emblem for him with its real and reflected surface.
HOW IT COULD FIT IN NATLAN'S STORY/PLOT/THEME:
  • This will be the "Ore" Specialty Material of Natlan (Trishiraite for Sumeru, Crystal Marrow for Inazuma, Cor Lapis and Noctilucous Jade for Liyue). These will probably be found in Lava Fields or within the Underground Area of Natlan.
  • In my speculation on the significance of this Material, I want to imagine that Natlan had many "Lesser Gods" - chief among them is a god I will call "Bacab". Bacab is the God of Innocence - the opposite of war. During the Cataclysm, he used his defeaning roar to "silence" the effects of the Abyssal Invasion. Because he loved Innocence, he did not want the people of Natlan to concern themselves in conflict and war. This action, however, left them severely unprepared when, eventually, Bacab perished. Bacab's blood crystallized and formed the Popoca Ores.
    • The angle here is that I just find it ironic that the God of Innocence's blood is being used to manufacture weapons of war.
    • Obsidian and Coagulated Blood share the same dark colors, so I imagined Popoca Ores as the crystallized blood of a dead god.
  • If not a Specialty Material, I can see this as beeing the "Crystal Chunk" expy (like the Amethyst Lump was for Inazuma) in Natlan. The Natlan weapon series will probably have weapons inlaid with obsidian chunks (see Macuahuitl).

https://preview.redd.it/fltyvwegaa4b1.png?width=253&format=png&auto=webp&s=a5fc9dcd56dc3a76d4b13e481e9842d05c7cba47
Material Name: MILLEPORA
SHORT LORE: Deep hues of vibrant crimson and orange define the trait of this stony coral. It grows on warm and shallow waters. From a distance, it appears as if a solitary flame burning beneath the waves.
It was said to have been created by the Warmaidens in an effort to repel the promise of the deep darkness. They imbued a special candle whose fire may never die, even when doused by water. Over time, the sun-like warmth crystallized into these beautiful corals that continue to shine brightly beneath the sea. It emits light that could be seen even from the ocean's surface, transforming the seas into a canvas of stars. The light they emit penetrated the deep abyss, providing a guide in the night for sailors and fishermen.
Notes: The Millepora is based off of the Fire Coral - unique and crimson-shaded corals that thrive in warm waters. While the Mesoamericans did not place too much emphasis on corals (as many Mesoamerican cultures practiced a more agrarian lifestyle), they did utilize corals in much of their architecture and jewelry. There are records that showed that Mesoamerican sailors used the Mayan Coral Reefs as navigational aid when traversing the Caribbean. (https://historicalmx.org/items/show/7)
Additionally, candles have long held an important significance among the Maya. Candles were made of beeswax, tallow, and other animal fats. To the Maya, candles represented the sun.
HOW IT COULD FIT IN NATLAN'S STORY/PLOT/THEME:
  • If Diving were to be a Teyvat-wide mechanic, and not just specific to Fontaine, then I could definitely see these as being the "underwater resource" collectible - if not, then these would grow on shallow waters, like the Calla Lilies, Seagrass, Nilotpala Lotus, or Sea Ganoderma
  • I like to imagine that there are "pirate-like organizations" in Natlan. With the whole region being based off of Mesoamerican Cultures, I'd like to insert an Age of Pirates callback as well. While I imagine there isn't much international trade going around in Natlan, local tribes have taken to seafaring to engage with outsiders - or at least, I'd like to believe that there are "pirates" in Natlan.
  • The concept of a dark underbelly existing beneath the human world is not new to Mesoamerican Cultures - in fact, the Mayans believe that passage into the Underworld is through the many caverns and cenotes that run throughout Central America. The Aztecs creation myth holds the belief that the world is separated into an upper and lower level, with the mythical Ceiba Tree (note: World Tree) separating the two.

2023.06.06 01:11 Chris_Mentese Meeting Brian Molko and the meaning of "Beautiful James"

Meeting Brian Molko and the meaning of
My name is Chris Mentese, a European guy from Antwerp. However, I will not bore you with such incidentals.
I submit to you that "Beautiful James" is in fact a reference to none other than James Dean himself. It's no secret that Brian looks up to Dean as a muse and has mentioned him in other Placebo songs such as "Ashtray Heart" and "This Picture."
"Beautiful James," as Brian has stated, is about pure love. In the song, Brian at times speaks both as himself and as James Dean. "Bring me back to life!" Molko cries, speaking as James, seeking to be brought back from his grave. Once Dean is resurrected, he and Brian venture through the fantasy zones of Europea, through many "battle fields." The current situation in Curope, and around the globe, is quite hot - fettered with much unseen troubles and dangers. Brian deeply expresses this idea in the song (and the rest of Never Let ME Go), as intense paranoia and feelings of danderousness permeate every melody lyric.
Later, when Brain sings, "I don't want to wake you, but I just may have to," he is speaking fervently, stating that he may have to utilize occult methodology (such as a tarot card, a Wedgie Board, Franken-bolts, or perhaps a seance) in order to contact Spirit James, who lies asleep, dead in some forsaken neitherworld.
Brian Molko clearly adores Dean and regards him as a spiritual brother, muse, and inspirato. After all, the two share so much. On the sophomoric Placebo record Sleeping with Gaists, the track "Something Wrong With This Picture" similarly calls to mind Dean. In the autobiographic song, Brain mentions the Ashtray Girl, a very hot, young goth woman with whom he had a torgid affair. She caused him to commit masochistic acts, such as when she put out cigarettes on Brian's chests. Now, the putting out of cigarettes on his svelte bobs is nothing but an off-color reference to Dean because, as many know, James fell for the same masochistic trick. Dean would command odd characters to place cigars on his cheste in the privacy of his bedroom, just as Brian did with the petite Ashtray Girl. Futherwore, Brian also has a song called "Ashtray Heart" on his album Battle For the Sun, which is chockablock with the same bizzarology - the intense image of a man in a plastic leather blazer, with women putting out cigarettes on his exposed chest. Again, this is both a reference to Dean and Brian himself.
If you have not listened to the whole of Never LEt Me Go, you really should. You must. When I first listened, I was alone on holiday, staying at a gloomy hostel in Strasbourg, in a darkly lit public restroom, reclining in the tub. As I heard the songs through my earphones, I was utterly repulsed; for it was all far too brutal. Too Honest. I wanted somthing lighter - sexier - with songs similar to the pop gems found on the Placebo albums of old. Insteada, what we got with NEver LEt ME GO, is smomthing very profound, very brutal, with lyrics and themes which cut into your very sole.
Listening to the tunes, I felt like Brian himself had pulled my stick, letting out somthing, and then stabbed me - denting my tits and cutting into my heart. I actually vomitted from both ends - but a little - by the album's close. And when the stuff dispersed in the water, I gasped, eyes rolling, and nearly lost consciousness. The whole while, Brian's spectral vocals echoed through my mind, and I choked, feeling the emotional pain. It was a very cathartic release, because Brian conveys true things - very real things that I wanted to put from my mind. But now, after this realization, I can tell you the truth: this record is the finest post Meds Placebo album I have seen on the shelf at the establishment. Pehaps it is second only to Without YOu I'm a Nothing.
I want readers to understand that Brian Molko is actually a wonderful guy, truly. I have met him several times, just by chance. We are both Europeans, similarly aged, originally from Belgium; and so, I have seen him at least 3-4 times - once in the late 90s, another in 2---s, and twice more, most recently, in the 2020s.
The first time I met Brian was in 1999. He did not see me; I only heard his angelic voice. I was at a European Health Clinic (whose name I will not say) receiving intra-testicular saline injections. Through a closed door, I heard Brain in the lobby, conversing with some being. He was saying something about Heathrow airport and the weather (just small talk). Excited, I tried to arise to go out and meet him. Alas, I could not. For I was down, bound in restraints. I tried to scream for him, but my mouth was covered. Besides, I was naked, and it was just as well that Brian did not witness my moment of impropriety.
Next, in the early 2000s, I met Brian on the train to Scotland. He sat alone. At first I thought he was Feldman the American actor, but indeed it was Brian. I engaged the man, and he smiled warmly. He even gave me some Dark Belgian Chocolate, a fine cigarette, and an autograph.
The following 10 years, I met Molko yeat again, but this time on the bullet train from Tokyo to Oskaka. Again, he was alone, but listening to a Placebo Parlament Funkadelic LP on his virtual Walkman. He was drinking a cup of very hot, very fresh German coffee.
"Brain," I said, "It is Chris! Do you not remember me?"
Molko said nothing, but only smiled.
In 2015, I nearly saw Brian again. I had just left a Christopher Lambert film festival in Zurich. As I walked the town, I felt hotly on edge - highly incensed and quite lethal. I needed a friend or lover; however, I was utterly alone. Rather than order an unknown escort in a strange town, I stopped into the gentleman's club - a nonstop erotic cabaret - away from high street.
Inside, I discreetly swallowed a pill in the lavatory, then entered the bar. There I took several drinks - clear vodka with plenty of ice - and solemnly viewed the cabaret. After some time, I noticed a slender man (about Brian's dimensions) reviving a lap dance from a lather large blonde woman, to the tune of Placebo's "English Summer Rain." Because of these indicators, I immediately made the logical connection that this man was, in fact, Molko.
I rushed through the crowd and came between the man and the dancer. Pushing the woman aside, whose breast collided with my hand, I ceased the the man, firmly pulling at the lapels of his jacket, and lifted him from his chair. Much to my dismay, I realized that he was not Brian, but only slightly similar in looks. Apparently, the DJ's song selection was a mere coincidence.
Bouncers arrived. There was some screaming and pushing. I was streuk several times, quite hard, Pelted with a fleshlight about the head and firmly across the seat. I then felt an arm come from behind and cross my neck. (It was not the first time I had been choked, nor the last.) Rather than fight, I conceded to the pressure and felt pure bliss as my consciousness left. (There was some strain and redness in the face, as well as Some stool dropage, as prescribed.) As I went, I emitted a high-pitched whining moan (much like Brian would have done under the same circumstances, I suppose). Doubtless, all in attendance were impressed by this; but it was far too late to take back the damage they had rendered, as I was well unconscious and positively beaten.
Security carried me from the premises and expelled me from the porch. I awokened at the storefront moments later, with some blood dripping from the nose. Worse still, my beautiful leather coat and Crimplene blouse were utterly torn. In the end, I left with two black eyes for my troubles - a delicious reminicient, worthy of Brian's excellent Placebo song, "Black Eyed."
After that setback, I did indeed bump into the real Molko once more. This happened in 2022, at the Front 242 concert, at the concession stand outdoors. Brian did not notice me at first, but when I roughly caught him by the arm and spun him around, he knew me straightaway. (He looked quite good with his present style: all together rugged, with long hair, fedora, fashion shades, Zorro mustache, and dashing grin.) After a hug and much laughter, we sat together and had a lengthy intellectual conversation, smoking many cigarettes, and drinking some alcohol. I offered him some colorful little tablets, but he was clean and did not want any.
All in all, it was a rather lovely evening. Brian expounded on topics such as himself and Placebo; whereas I talked mainly about my frustrations with life. Brian was very forthgiving and simpathetic. He even assured me that he would help me to get laid (I requested a real female, and Molko insisted that he could do it, no question asked, nor fee collected.)
"Rest assured, next time I will get you a woman from the red light sector, and I will pay the fine," said he.
At the close of our meeting, we had exchnaged some phone numbers, and the sistuation got a bit confused in the heated exchange. I am not altogether sure I got the right number, as I have texted Brian and await confirmation, yet to recieve any response! Most likely there was some mistake, but it is no matter, since I am somewhat confindence I shall bump across Molko yet again in future time.
With his eyes, sincere and blue; his voice, high, nasal, and yet resonant; his words and teachings, beyond the border of genius; and his way of being, seemingly alien yet at once profundly human, this Brian is truly an unusual person - a miracle worker, mildly put. They should never have exiled the man to Denmark, following Brexit. It's a very sad thing, and Brian has been complaining about it ever since.
In closing, I have this to offer: Very many of you Placebo fans are being unfair and irrational, complaining about the band's latest work. "Give us your old sounds," you demand. "Make new music like With Out You I'm Nothing," or, "Give us the funs songs of your first record!" In response, I tell you this: Do not do this, ever. You do not know what you ask.
This is no longer the 90's - a wonderful time. No, this is the future and life stinks. Further, Brian Milko is no longer the amazing fun-person he was in the Brit-pop days. Back then he wore the Zero Girl Shirts, The Stunt Bitch T-shirt, and dressed like a girl ... sometimes. He was cheerfull anorexic - a glib androgynous - who was very courtious, very cheeky, with a playful wit and flipant humor. He was like a son who was rather like a smart daughter - one to be cheerish, which you wished you had, had you had the privilege of having children. Gone are those halcyon days. Brian is now an adult - a hardened man - weary, serious, older, troubled, somewhat handsome and somewhat rugged, who is prone to absurdist flights in his fedora, black leather coat, black shirt, long sheet hair, and mustache. His comings and goings are very mysterious, as are his creative processes. Don't bother him. He cannot go back in time. These are grim times, and he can't return to being a boy. Neither can any of us.
With Much Love,
Chris M.
Brian and I at the pub in the vosges.
Brian (left) and I (on the right). Take note, if you are able, of my beautiful leather outergarmet (made from real lamb). Please also notice, that day I was very stress-worn and had not shaved in over several weaks, thus accounting for my whiskers and mullet hair-styles. For you and I (us Placeboy fans), we know that time is relative. In other words, time is short. Thus, I cannot maintain the proper image of all times. Also, my funds are rather limited, as I am not a sucessful adult financially speaking (Although, I, like other Europeans, place emphasis on quality over quantity, and as such, have amassed a rather remarkable, though modest, wardrobe filled with several vintage garments of remarkable quality - perfect for the man such as myselfer, who blends Euriopean advance-style, with alternative looks of rock, the likes of which Brian Nolko is particularly of note).
In life, there are only so many tasteful, small moments when two men (like Brian and me) can kick back, get togeder, and just share a small, pleasent moment, like two gentleman. It was a very good moment, I dare say, and I looking foward to future conforntations between Brian and I, and prehapts Stephan (or even disgruntled x-drummer, Steve). We shall see.

2023.06.05 23:10 AnOkSecretary I work as a secretary at a small FBI office. A man in a pink poncho almost killed me.

[Related stories]
Today was the tipping point. For months, I've been working as a secretary at a small FBI office in Lancaster, a sleepy town on the outskirts of Los Angeles. My job as a secretary includes what you’d expect; phone calls, donut deliveries, but also a constant need to redirect old people to the police department. Believe it or not, the Bureau doesn’t care that your neighbor’s dog constantly barking. Despite the monotony, I've come to appreciate the stability of my job, something I’ve desperately needed as I approach my late twenties. But today didn’t include any of those things. Or maybe it did. That’s the problem, I can’t remember.
I arrived at the office and fired up the hissing Keurig coffee machine, and the next thing I knew, I was waking up in a daze as my boss wished me a happy weekend. This wasn't just a momentary lapse in memory induced by a boring day – no, it was a complete blackout. Poof. Gone in an instant and transported 8 hours in the future.
Strange things have been happening at the office for a while now, but they are becoming more frequent and severe. I hadn't told anyone because I knew no one would believe me. But today I’ve decided to share what’s been going on as I finally have some proof of the weird shit going on here.
After rubbing my eyes deeply from what felt like a long slumber I checked my desk for any clues about what happened. I woke my computer from sleep checking Outlook and Teams before shifting my gaze to my second monitor. That's when I saw the Word document, over 15 pages long, single-spaced. It was a detailed record of my activities, with time stamps down to the minute. The words on the page were familiar, but I couldn't remember typing them. As I read through the document, my heart raced faster with every line.
I’ve summarized the document below and omitted timestamps that seem irrelevant:
[10:45 AM] There’s an old man in a pink poncho sitting in the waiting room. I’ve asked him if he needed anything but he’s ignoring me. His eyes are glued to the wall as if he's waiting for something. Look, I’ve seen ‘California crazy’ but this is just bizarre... It’s not even raining out.
[10:50 AM] The Barley twins swung by and took an exaggerated double take in an eerie unison motion. When I asked them what was wrong, they said quote “Just checking if the smoking hot chick is back”. I told them what I’ve told them a thousand times; that my temp job replacing the old secretary is now permanent. They chuckled at my annoyance as they walked away, their eyes lingering on me a little too long. I could hear them complaining about not getting a female replacement and that I’m just not “fun”. I rolled my eyes and went back to reading my novel.
[11:03 AM] I swear the old man in the pink poncho is looking at me. In my peripheral vision, I can see his dark black eyes gazing at me. It's like he's studying me, waiting for me to make a move. But when I look up, he's back staring at the wall with an uncanny fixation. If he keeps it up, I’m going to have to ask him to leave.
[12:35 PM] The sound of a revving engine outside signaled the arrival of the FedEx driver yet again, demanding to know about 'the package'. Irritation bubbled inside me at the relentless daily visits from this delivery person. I couldn't tell if it was some twisted prank from the Barley twins or if the driver was genuinely delusional. I told her no, that we never will have a package for her, and that she’s frankly stupid for asking. She rolled her eyes, blew a bubble from her gum, and popped it before walking away.
[12:36 PM] The pink poncho man is gone.
[12:44 PM] Jenson swooped by and caught me by surprise. He had that gleeful childish smile on his face as he peered over my desk and asked “Waaaatttchhaaaaa doooinnngggg?”. I could tell he didn’t actually care but I mustered up a response.
“Uh, nothing, just cleaning out some--“.
“Hey so did you see any packages come in? Or taken? Or any with the packages at all?”
He tapped his foot nervously on the floor. Right when I was about to respond he cut me off once more, face pale and eyes twitching searching for something behind me.
“Never mind, pfff, it’s, uh, probably nothing…”
He wandered in an aimless direction behind me at a hurried pace.
[1:00 PM] I confronted the Barley twins while they were “working”. James had his feet up on his desk, lazily flipping through a magazine, while Tommy was intently focused on a game on his computer. I could feel my blood boil as I approached them. James looked up with a grin and spoke.
“Hey sweetheart, here to bring us coffee?”
"You two better stop with the whole package thing," I seethed. "Jensen blew it, his acting sucks. You know better than to take advantage of our boss’s innocence. And besides, this whole damn thing is too complicated. What's the point?"
James squinted his face in confusion. “Look man, as much as I would like to take credit for whatever bothering you, it ain’t us.”
“We’re busy with work, just like you should be.” Tommy joined and let out a playful wink.
As I glared at them both, I couldn't discern if they were telling the truth.
[1:14 PM] I caught the FedEx driver trying to sneak past my desk. She had a hoody up and obnoxious black sunglasses. I whistled at her and motioned with my hands for her to come over. She sighed at getting caught.
Before she could speak, I shouted “I don't have it, I don't want it, and I don’t want anything to do with it! Got it?"
She proceeded to flick me off. In response, I threw a pencil at her. I missed but it’s the thought that counts.
[2:32 PM] After enduring an hour-long meeting, I entered the bathroom and was hit by the putrid smell of urine and mold like a wall. I quickly scanned the three stalls, only to freeze when I saw the old man in the bright pink poncho standing in the middle one. My first thought was to leave and hold it, but my bladder had other ideas. I took the urinal to his right and did my business as fast as I could.
That's when I felt his eyes on me. I tried to ignore it and keep my eyes on my feet, but something compelled me to look up. And there he was, his eyes locked on mine slowly fixing his drooping frown to a sinister twitching grin. He pulled down his poncho hood revealing a tattoo on the side of his bald head that I couldn’t quite make out. I backed up and the man followed imitating my movement and maintaining eye contact like his head was a gyroscope. It was at this point I noticed the partially see-through poncho was in fact his only article of clothing.
I yelled “Yew dude, what the fuck?” as I lifted my hand blocking my vision. But when I could smell his wretched odor get closer, I split my fingers creating a small peephole. The man’s face was only inches away from mine with an inhuman smile that stretched to the sides of both of his eyes. His eyes consisted of only a black dot pupil slowly dilating, pearl white sclera, and no iris. His ivory teeth were sharp daggers tainted yellow and rotten dry red. He wailed nonsensical words that reverberated off the walls of the cramped bathroom.
I screamed at him to stop, hoping someone would hear me. But he just kept moving one step closer as I took a step back, his smile growing wider and wider. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest, and I knew I had to make a break for it. I frantically tore open the bathroom door, praying that he wouldn't lunge at me as I fled.
[2:38 PM] Susan from HR brought me a free T-Shirt, thanks Susan!
[2:45 PM] Security came by to get my report of the incident. As far as they can tell, it’s just another crazy homeless person. I tried to tell them there was something different about him, that his smile was unearthly but they thought I was being hyperbolic.
[3:59 PM] After making a long pitstop in the breakroom to fully decompress I returned to my desk to find a cardboard box. It lacks any address, and the cardboard is weirdly fresh without any dirt or damage. I think I’m going to open it.
And that’s it. After that point, just 1 minute after, I woke from my daze apparently. I don’t remember any of these events. I don't even know this FedEx driver that I apparently lost my cool with and allegedly knew from the prior week. And that guy in the pink poncho? I'll have to ask Dan at IT if he has access to the security tapes and get this report I submitted to security. The only evidence I have that this happened is that I’m wearing the new FBI logo embroidered shirt Susan gave to me.
I want to be clear again: I'm clean as a whistle. I haven't taken any drugs or even had a drop of alcohol. So, unless I'm developing early dementia, does anyone know how this could have happened? I appreciate any comments or insights that you may have to offer, and I'll make sure to respond to them this week. I'll also post a follow-up with any new information I come across, as well as some other stories from my past that I think you'll find interesting. Thank you for reading.

2023.06.05 21:57 Khenal Dungeon Life 124

Another day, another set of delvers. Today’s set is starting early… and they don’t look much like my typical delvers. Most of them come in with some variety of armor, or at least a wizard’s robes, but not these ones. These ones come with what looks to me like forge gear, heavy leather aprons and gloves and such. The half-dozen or so at least have picks and hammers that they probably know how to swing, but I seriously doubt they can handle my deeper stuff.

That doubt turns to certainty as I probe them with a few encounters on the surface. One of them gets a nasty bite from one of my vipers, and he hobbles back towards the gates to recover, giving me some “defeat delver” mana. The rest of the group decide to turn back when they meet a widow in the tunnels, and I’m just glad they understand what they can’t handle.

The next group actually tries their luck against the widow, and she leaves them nice and wrapped up for my ratlings to haul to the gates on the surface.

On the one hand, I’m enjoying the mana for victories. On the other hand, I’m starting to think I should have been more careful about the fantasy metals. While smiths theoretically could be after gold, I seriously doubt it. These guys look like they make adventuring gear, not jewelry.

I’m sure they’ll learn. It doesn’t look like it even will take them long to do so. The more experienced miners show up around noon, a bit late in the day for them, but it looks like they were spending their time organizing a big group. I wonder if it’s even technically a raid party. That’d be kinda cool, even if it’d really show how much I underestimated how desirable those fantasy metal nodes are.

Usually, mining groups going to the caverns are about 3:1 miners to adventurers, but this group is looking almost 1:1. They all consult with a map and check their route, and I’m much less concerned for this group than the others. I’d bet they heard about my friendly disposition and the valuable ores, and thought they’d be able to run in and get some quickly. These guys have been in the caverns and know I can bring some heat if I want, so they’ve prepared accordingly. I’m actually a bit proud of these guys.

I make sure I have some healing slimes down in the lava tubes anyway. They probably have some fire protection, but I don’t know exactly how dangerous my wyrms actually are. They’ve been having an easy buffet of the fire elementals, but that’s thanks to the ambushes. I don’t want my wyrms to just swallow limbs and dive back into the rock. Hopefully it’ll be good training for my weird little dragons, to actually have to fight, instead of relying on surprise tactics.

I keep half a metaphorical eye on them as they steadily make their way down, cool and professional. The rest of my attention is on the tubes as I consider what else to do in there. One thing that catches my eye is the herbalism stuff. I had been expecting them to mostly just be fuel to make charcoal and coke for the cinder ants, but it looks like some of the seeds the fruitbats have found on expedition are starting to grow down here with their help.

There’s even a variation on a lumber node, called a deepapple. I think they actually specifically want to get fruitbat attention, as the mushrooms grow pretty thick and tall, putting the caps close to the ceiling. Instead of the typical mushroom gills, they have little round… spore pods, I guess? Makes me think of a video I watched before I met truck-kun, about stinkhorn mushrooms. I think the little pods are full of gleeba, which is not just fun to say, but also basically spores in liquid. Thankfully, it doesn’t seem to be too stinky. I think. I’d imagine they’d get a ruder name if they were. Deephorseapples, maybe.

Whatever the smell or nutritional value, they should be perfect for the cinder ants to do their thing, and let me grow some of the more exotic stuff my bats have managed to recover. I’m pretty sure they’ve gotten them from the volcanic area past the tubes, which bodes well for delvers being able to do stuff in there, eventually.

One that catches my eye is Fool’s Coal. I sprinkle a few of them around as I look over the description, which is interesting. The plant looks like it mostly grows inside the rock, and produces a little black fruit on the surface. It has a lot of alchemical uses, apparently, and is called Fool’s Coal because only a fool would try to burn it. It looks like it tends to explode when too hot. I guess that’s one way to get your seeds away from a place too hot for them to survive.

Magmoss is an interesting one, too. It grows close to the surface of rocks and such, making them look like they have veins of magma, but they’re not hot. In fact, they actively cool, and I’d bet they’re a primary ingredient in a lot of fire protection potions.

I have a few others that I’d like to plant, but I think I’ll need to expand again to get them. Lava Lillys actually require lava pools to grow in, making me wonder if the volcano area will be more like the underswamps but with lava instead of water. Magma. Magma is inside, lava is outside. Thank you, Dwarf Fortress.

I also check in on my crucible ants to see if they alloy stuff properly, and it sure looks to me like they can. I see a few hills made of bronze over by the copper and tin nodes. It makes me want to place a whole bunch of nodes close to each other and see what the crucible ants can cook up, but I think I’ll hold off on making more of the fantasy ore nodes for now.

I might upgrade the ants again, though. I like the crucible ants, but they’re still not going to make me an enclave. I think I have at least one more tier of ants before I reach the max ones. My mana is still doing fine, especially after ‘defeating’ those earlier miners, so it’s not a difficult decision to upgrade to the next tier.

Wow, that’s a big and ugly ant. It’s called a tunnelbore ant, which makes the ugliness make a bit more sense. And the size. They’re easily going to be my biggest denizens at around four feet tall and around ten feet long. They’re kinda squat and thick ants, with a huge head like a major might have. Instead of the big mandibles a major would have, though, it has a big flat ugly lumpy spiky face. It reminds me of the head of a big tunnel boring drill, but organic instead of metal.

I’m glad it doesn’t look like it can just rotate its face like one, though. That’d be some nightmare fuel there. It does like to dig, at least, and I watch as it starts. It just rubs its face against the wall in a circular motion, looking like it wants to wax on, or maybe wax off. Probably off, because the wall of the tunnel is easily being dug away. Once it gets to put its entire face against the newly-flattened part of the wall, the ant crawls around in circles, like a breakdancer spinning on his head. But with more limbs. And on the wall.

…maybe not so much like a breakdancer, then. Whatever the correct metaphor, it’s making good progress into the wall, and I spend a bit of mana to give it some direction. I'd usually have Coda do this, but he’s busy with the cinder blocks and cement. I tell the ant to make a bunch of side chambers along the tunnel for now, and am glad to see the next tunnelbore ant start to work on a new one. I’m sure they’ll congregate a bit once they can start opening the boreholes into proper chambers.

I’m really happy with my new tunnelbore ants, and watch them work as the miners reach the tunnels. It looks like the adventurers have some form of fire protection, which is great for my wyrms. Not letting them ambush is one thing, but how can I expect them to attack if a touch would make third-degree burns? First degree?

Really bad burns! The wyrms keep them on their toes, opting to start with making very obvious and slow magma holes before leaping out, forcing the delvers to dodge or otherwise deal with the simple momentum of the attack. The delvers’ strategy is simple, but effective. The adventurers will lock down the mandibles of a wyrm in various ways, and the miners will come in with hammers and picks to get at the more vulnerable sides. It’s not especially fast work, but it’s effective and pretty safe. Burns and wounds still happen, but they have some healing on hand for that.

I absently nod to myself about that, glad I won’t need to babysit the delvers as I watch the ants dig. That’s part of the fun of an ant farm, after all.

2023.06.05 18:31 arcanumperegrinum Bizarre Entity Experience on PE

Hi everyone! I made this account specifically to make this post as I need some answers from the *ahem* experienced members of this community. I am sorry for the long post, but this was a highly eventful experience.
I (23f) took shrooms for the first time with my BF (25m) while in the company of some friends 2 months ago.
I have been undergoing a massive healing journey these past few years following some highly traumatic events in 2018. I had managed to get through each day in denial of what had occured, but the pandemic forced me inside and forced me to think critically about what I've gone through. It was ugly, but 3 years later I feel as though I've come out the other end.
We had it planned out. My boyfriend and I were going to take 1.5g for our first time tripping, and our 2 friends (another couple who we are very good friends with) were going to stay sober to guide us. The plan was to take the shrooms and go to a local park that those of us that were tripping had never been to.
So it's the morning of, we're about to leave for the park and we weighed out 1.5 grams for each of us to take. We ground our servings into a powder and dumped each serving into it's own shot glass, then filled each glass to the top with orange juice. We let it sit for about 30 seconds before downing the entire shot in one disgusting, citrusy gulp. Neither of us seemed to be too concerned with the fact that we had only had a single dunkin donut each to eat that day. The plan is to leave immediately after as the place is 30 minutes from their apartment, but we were still there after 15 minutes. We decided it was time to dip but I had to use the bathroom really quickly. This is when it started.
The walls of the bathroom in front of me, or more specifically, the texture of the walls began to move in a fluid motion. I looked at the floor, and the grain of the wood slabs moved like a rushing river that disapppeared under the bathroom door and poured into the room on the other side. The only thing I could think in that moment was "Fuck."
I left the bathroom in a hurry, told my friends it was starting, and they all recommended we leave immediately. I also learned that while I was in the bathroom, my boyfriend got sick and threw up all the shrooms he took :(
By the time we got to the car (a 30-second walk), I felt incredibly disoriented. It felt like the Earth was closing in on me and weighing on my body, but almost in an energetic sense rather than literal? I put on my sunglasses and got in the car with my boyfriend in the backseat and our two friends in the front.
This car ride felt like hell. I felt nauseous and I felt this intense sensation of being overpowered completely. I could feel my eyelids become 100 pounds heavier, but this voice in my brain that I recognized as my own said KEEP THEM OPEN. The only problem was that I couldn't. Everywhere I looked, I felt like I was being blinded. Lights were extremely bright and hurt my eyes, so I gave in and shut them hard.
As I shut them, I saw geometric shapes, patterns, the usual stuff that gets discussed in this thread. What I was not expecting was to suddenly lose all sensation in my body. I shit you not, I felt like I was aimlessly floating through...space? Time? I was completely untethered and it terrified me. Then, the feeling of aimlessness ceases. As I look up, I see why. Before me stood a woman who was, simply put, the most mesmerizing woman I had ever seen. She was COSMICALLY large (she could probably hold the moon like a soccer ball, for reference), with olive skin and very dark brown wavy hair that flowed in all directions. As I gazed upon her, I began to register more details about her appearance, and I gained this sense that she was the essence of everything that exists. It was terrifying and beautiful to experience. Just to remind you all, this is happening as I am sitting in the car with 4 people at 1pm with my eyes closed. I am seeing this in my mind's eye.
The woman and I spoke but there are bits and pieces I cannot recall. She asked me to let go. I said how?? of what?? I cannot let go of myself, it's who I am. She said "let me show you who you are".
I saw a few flashing images of things I did not recognize, but what I could recognize were the flashing images of 6 or so women, who appeared to come from many different periods in time. I intuitively felt that I had a strong direct connection to these women, but I could not fully determine whether they were ancestral representations or past-life ones. Then, she literally GREW my body until I was the same size as her. I can still recall the feeling of my body stretching and pulling itself in all directions to match hers, and we stood together with the planet Earth in between us. I was HUGE. Then, in a split second, she shrunk my body down to the size of an atom. The feeling of snapping back into myself was intense as hell. I became so shrunken down that I found myself inside of the cellular structure of a mushroom. This appeared as a massive network of tunnels that connected to each other and never seemed to end, and I was just FALLING THROUGH IT. I remember being terrified, having no control, desperately trying to grab onto something but I was so small that I never once touched any part of my surroundings. Then the falling stopped, and I was in the woman's embrace, and the love I felt was so intense and surreal it brought tears to my eyes. It was a new and unfamiliar feeling of contentness, completeness, forgiveness, and unconditional love.
I felt everything begin to move around me, and I do mean EVERYTHING. Everything that has ever existed or will ever exist. The woman then looked at me, and said that by letting go, I open myself up to everything the world has to offer. Then, in a way that sounded louder and more direct than our previous conversation, she said "Just watch." I then opened my eyes to find that we had just parked at our destination, and that everything became overwhelmingly serene and quiet from one second to the next. I immediately got out of the car to throw up because, let's face it, the sensation of falling through an abyss can make you feel a little sick. I did not throw up. The entire first hour of the trip was me trying to reason with the universe so that this sick feeling would pass. I felt like something was trying to claw it's way out of me. It wasn't until the other girl we were with asked me what I was feeling, heard me out, and replied "Just let go" that the feeling went away. I then proceeded to have an amazing trip out in nature, the remainder of which was not out of the ordinary apart from extreme visuals and everything (the field, the trees, the lake) all looking like they were alive.
It is my understanding that this is not a common trip experience, especially on 1.5 g. Every report of contact with an entity that I have seen has been on 3g or higher. Has anyone had an experience like this on shrooms? Everyone in my life that I've talked to has either been floored by my experience or flat-out does not believe me. The only person who told me that they had a similar experience was someone who used Ayahuasca. This was a beautiful journey that 100% changed my life for the better, but it's difficult when you can't find others that have had a similar experience.

Hi! Does anyone know the policy on sending a private in basic a portable charger? I did already get the green light to send it by a former DS that i know, but was wondering if anything special needs to be done regarding how it is sent? Thanks in advance.

I'm going to transitioning from the Navy to the Army via an interservice transfer. I have four years, a deployment, and a lot of memories under my belt. I am electing to come back in as an O-1 into the Army as I have no interest in the limited job prospects that an O-3 with no Army experience would bring me, and frankly I don't give a shit -- it's just 4 years. My (fairly promising, at least based on what the Army side said) goal is to eventually be infantry.
Coming in as a new Army officer, what should I expect, both from the position of coming from a different branch and generally as a "new guy" Army officer?
What stuff (most likely) stays the same coming a ship, specifically ship-life? What changes the most?
How best can I take care of my people while still accomplishing the mission? I know this looks very different between branches. It's always a delicate balance.
What does the "daily grind" of a combart arms community look like? What's the "unnecessary BS day-to-day" that you guys get up to? (I can think of plenty of examples in the Navy, but I'm not sure they translate 1:1).
BONUS: What are your best and worst interaction stories with your fresh LTs?

Im 25 with a bachelors in CyberSecurity, also an Eagle Scout. Have not done much volunteer or team leadership since then. Nor do I have much work experiance.
Am I too uncompetitive for an OCS slot for 17X?
I spoke to a recruiter who mentioned going enlisted at E4 with 17C, then after 1 year of training and 1 of actual work, applying for OCS then.
Is that a realistic scenario or classic recruiter talk getting my hopes up in order to boost elistment numbers?
Prior medical history includes inactive IBS + depression from a couple years back.
Also, what are the timeframes for getting in with both of these options?

Is it worth getting Emt certified or Paramedic certified before going Army? I got DQ at meps and was told I need to wait a year due to medication I was on last year. I'm trying to find something to fill my time for when I'm able to enlist next year. Is this a good idea or a waste of time?

I have been recently promoted, and clothing and sales is currently out of stock of my current rank, so I am unable to update my AGSU. We have room and uniform inspections soon, and my first line is attempting to make me wear my AGSU with incorrect rank. I have been looking through AR670-1 as well as AR700-84 trying to see if there is a reg against this, but have been unsuccessful in finding one. If there isn’t, I’ll deal, but I’m not too keen on wearing a previous rank. Any help backed by regs would be appreciated

I’m going National Guard. I’m still working through the beginning process with my recruiter. Here’s the catch: I wasn’t born in the US. I was born in Kazakhstan.
I was never naturalized because when I was adopted into my family in 2002, the Child Citizenship Act passed in 2000 stating that the amendment is “to provide for the automatic acquisition of U.S. citizenship when certain conditions have been met.” — I have met these conditions and am a legal citizen of 22 years (Section 320 of the Immigration and Nationality Act. This amendment states that I also do not need a certificate of citizenship, which I never applied for as I legally do not need one.)
I have a passport, a social security card, a legal photo ID and a birth certificate. I DO HAVE a permanent resident card, but it expired years ago. I was a baby when my parents got it and they never renewed it. However, I am a US Citizen. I’ve lived here my entire life. The problem is, my recruiter insists that I must have that Permanent Resident Card up to date. I would do it in a heartbeat, but it costs $500.
Why is my passport, ID, SS card or birth certificate not enough to prove my citizenship? I’m frustrated and my parents are getting short with me constantly asking about it.

Kind of a situational question. My wife is scheduled for C Section June 21st and it looks like I may get PCS orders before then. If I do, and the kid comes, what do I do? Soonest my wife’s doc says she can move is 6 weeks postpartum and my wife can’t look after our first kid and newborn while she recovers from surgery. Is there anything I can do to report closer to the end of baby leave? I’m a geobachelor.

I just have a couple questions about how having a GED will affect my enlistment. I've heard it makes you ineligible for bonuses, but what about contract options? Could I still get an Option 4 contract? Option 19? If not, how many college credits would I need to move into the Tier 1 education category?
also, how do you increase your chances of going to certain schools (Airborne, Air Assault, Ranger, etc) if it's not in your contract? Going in as a 68W (Combat Medic) if that makes a difference

Im a dumbass and made and said a lot of stupid ass shit that some hater who had it out for me has been basically (not really) 'blackmailing' me with that was on my laptop (private, never uploaded) which he hacked into . It was a bunch of questionable shit I said that basically makes me paranoid reasonably that I could possibly be court martial'd but I was never arrested or anything, and I'm sure the guy would upload it again if I joined the Military just to tarnish my good name. I said all this when I was 18 , but basically this dude came to my house and threatened my family with a knife and I responded, 'not so good' , and as a result, I was basically 5150'd and had lied to the people saying I was suicidal resulting in a medical documentation which has made me fearful of ever going to MEPS. So at the time I was 'isolated' so in attempt to expose the fact that there was a legitimate danger I reasonably tried to court attention on Twitter and basically did and said everything that could ever allow me to hold a security clearance before deleting it.
My perception of the event was that he was threatening my family with a knife, but to the outside world, he simply slashed my families tires. Basically he baited me and fell for it. There was much more to the story but if I could go back in time I probably would not have reacted the way I did but I was 18 and my mind was barely developing.

I was 5150'd and I was told I could never hold public office and I am barred from the Medical field . This of course was a lie, but it's BASICALLY on my Medical record and it's a huge red flag. So naturally, unable to join the Military, I was unable to complete my mission and of course, was put on medication for some time (7 months) until I can figure out what to do. So I been working warehouse jobs ever since that day . I am 23 years old now, the incident happened when I was 18. I was and still am a cross country runner who is fit and healthy , who can complete the physical requirements just fine but the 'Moral' and 'Medical' is what's preventing me from joining, open to debate. I haven't made the same dumb mistake of reacting to my families tires being slashed since and learned from that experience .

Obviously the Police knows what was on my laptop because this dude went around with the unauthorized material he was not allowed to have and actually put the content in DVD's around the city hoping someone would pick it up and read it , and I actually worked at a warehouse which actually had a police officer who worked there at the warehouse to check the hard drives for CP (i dont know the deal about that) , and he found the very same DVD filled with the content of my basically unhinged responses that I never uploaded to the internet .

Basically this dude mentally ruined my life but I wasn't the only 1 he has done this to, he has hacked into multiple people's laptops and slashed other people's tires before and distributed information and he has been arrested in the past .

I was wondering if I could be court martial'd for unprofessional conduct before I even join the military or am I just overthinking this? I basically had this huge 4 hour clip of a rant about his twitter account on my laptop that was perfectly constitutional legal but if you took things out of context it sounds like something that would have me arrested if I was in the military , and I never uploaded it, nor planned to. maybe it's just all in my head but as you can imagine , the real problem isn't my speeches that were on my laptop but the 5150'd , which was at the time and information I had at my disposable,a completely reasonable reaction to a violent threat.

I recently graduated college and am looking for advice in terms of what I should expect/request in my contract for 68W MOS. I got my B.A. in cellular biology in the beginning of May and have been set on enlisting since my junior year; now that I'm in the last couple of steps with my recruiter before going to MEPS, I wanted to know if there was anything I should ask for based on my scores/degree (520 MCAT, 99 ASVAB, 146 GT) in terms of rank or guaranteed admission to schools (such as Airborne) coming in. I am looking at the 2-year contract as of now because I do want to apply to medical school down the line. If I enjoy my time, I am open to staying longer in the Army. However, there are some characteristics I currently need to work on that I know enlistment will provide (as opposed to OCS which would mean an extended contract) in addition to education benefits. Also, the alternative would have been doing a gap year in a lab or clinic which doesn't pay much better and is something I have done my fair share of. Any help is appreciated; thank you.

This is kind of a weird question but i really want to join the army but my family is telling me that it’s impossible for me to join because unfortunately my parents passed by suicide and that alone will disqualify me. I’ve tried googling it and looking all over the internet to find a. Answer but I can’t find it. Is there any truth to that? Thanks if answered.

I've always had a draw to service, but my athletic opportunities usually kept me from it. Out of high school, I had the opportunity to play college baseball and passed up on trying the academy route. Once I got halfway through college, I wanted to try ROTC, but I was a starter on the baseball team and balls deep in a mechanical engineering course load, so it didn't seem feasible to add to my plate.
Now, I'm going on 24 with 2 years of experience as an ME in product development. Is there a military route for someone like me who does have a college degree, but is beyond the point of an ROTC college program? Is my specific degree useful for the military?

I'm joining the Army soon, within a month or two. I've come up with an MOS list I made based on what I'm interested in (this is NOT a list of my available jobs based on my ASVAB score, just some jobs that sounded interesting based on the field I was looking into). I was mostly considering Logistics and Supply, but I am open to other potential fields, and jobs that aren't in the list below. Like I said, I want to do something in logistics and supply, but more so, just something non-combative that allows me to travel to most bases. What do you guys think about it? Any recommendations? I do plan to do something in law enforcement after I get out, but my MOS does not have to relate to that. Here is the list. The first two are the ones I'm currently considering, and the ones in parentheses are the ones I'm interested in.
(Cargo Specialist 88H)
(Unit Supply Specialist 92Y)
(Automated Logistics Specialist 92A)
(Ammunition Specialist 89B)
Ammunition Stock Control and Accounting Specialist 89A
(Corrections/Detention Specialist 31E)
Culinary Specialist 92G
Medical Logistics Specialist 68J
(Military Police 31B)
(Motor Transport Operator 88M)
Petroleum Supply Specialist 92F

I don’t mind basically getting paid to workout and learn about nutrition, but I’d love tips and just overall things to prep for before I have to ship out to it.

Transportation Management Coordinator 88N

2023.06.05 08:25 Gandalf-108 Evening Mischa, You're Fired!

Hello everyone, I'm Mischa. Inspired by yesterday's live event, I wrote this piece right afterward.
I've been on a weight loss journey since late 2021 and I've lost 20 kilograms so far. I've reached 11,5% bodyfat, but I'm working to lowering that percentage. I still have quite a bit of abdominal fat which I would like to lose for health reasons, but also because I want to reach a lean physique.
Dipping into those last few kilograms of fat have produced the strongest cravings which led to some poor choices.
During my weight loss journey I have managed to get rid of a few Mischa's. They are all forms of Evening Bryan who have progressively been refined through my weight loss journey:
I've come far. I am consistently eating a whole foods plant based diet without refined carbohydrates or sugar. I've been vegan for 6 years (with some periods of vegetarianism here and there), and I've been tracking calories since I started my weight loss journey using YAZIO.
I never binge on junk food any more. These days, cheating consists of eating more nuts, raisins, fruits or peanut butter than my daily caloric budget allows. I binge on whole, healthy foods, but they can still lead to stalls in weight loss. Calories will always be calories.
A few weeks ago I came across Blueprint and it has been a revolution. I'm starting with the nutrition and created a modified version for myself. Instead of always deciding in the moment what I wanted to eat, I've started to plan my nutrition meticulously and make these decisions beforehand. Leaving these decisions to my Autonomous Self has been a liberating experience so far. When I have my nutrition in order, I will get some blood tests done and start working on supplementation.
My current version of Evening Mischa convinces me that the Blueprint dinners (Beet salad, sweet potato) are not enough calories to last me through the night and to fuel my morning run, thus he convinces me to eat a few handfuls of nuts or have a rye cracker with peanut butter, which always turns into 3 or 4, easily adding 500 calories to my carefully crafted regime and thus inhibiting weight loss for that day.
Normal Mischa knows very well that there is no problem with the dinners. In fact, he knows that they are optimized to be easily digestible so the stomach is nice and empty when it's time for an optimal sleep. But Evening Mischa has shown up a couple of times last week and won the battle, and I've had enough.
I'm hereby firing Evening Mischa's authority to make decisions about my food. The system is in place, everything is prepared and planned.
It is time to let my Autonomous Self take over from here on out.
I started writing this without much forethought, and instantly some doubts arise. Evening Mischa panics. But there is really no point in waiting any longer. I want to be in a caloric deficit continuously and keep losing weight.
I want an optimal body.
I want to live long and healthy.
I want to be rid of all the fat.
Present Mischa wants this.
Future Mischa wants this.
The only person who does not want this is Evening Mischa who shows up 1 hour after dinner convincing me that I need to eat a few more handfuls of nuts or a cracker with peanut butter because I don't feel full enough, or because I need energy for my run tomorrow.
If I start losing weight more than 0,4kg a week, I will increase calories. There is no need for interference. The system will handle it.
I don't need Evening Mischa to meddle with these affairs.
The Data Steers Everything.

2023.06.05 07:51 HeadOfSpectre Blue Lagoon

I knew that Ray liked to party, but this was a little too much. He was on the dance floor with a spaced out look in his eye, dancing like he’d just stepped out of some 1980s music video. The people around him didn’t seem all that put off, but they were probably almost as high as he was.

Almost, being the operative word in that sentence.

Look, I get it. I like to party too from time to time. But you gotta be smart about it. You gotta know where your limit is, and I don’t think that Ray knew his limit.

***

I’d never actually been to this part of town before, but hey, there’s a first time for everything, right? Ray and I had just closed the deal of our careers and figured a little celebration was in order. I’d initially figured we’d just have a few drinks and maybe get laid. But when he broke out the molly, I wasn’t going to say no and the next hour or so after that was fucking killer.

Then we’d ran into that dude at the bar.

This guy was… well, he looked like he was on drugs, not like he sold them. He had messy hair, a grin that said: ‘I just farted!’ and I’m pretty sure he was covered in glitter. He was wearing a hot pink suit, with a neon blue bowtie, on top of a regular black tie. Yeah. Two ties.
Anyways, he must’ve realized that we were also high off our asses, because as we took a seat at the bar he came right over to us, wearing that ‘I just farted’ grin and chatted us up.
“Hey man! You two having a good time tonight?”
“Fuck yeah we are!” Ray replied, “Fucking love your getup, man!”
“Aww hell yeah, brother!”

The Glitter Man went in for a high five and Ray reciprocated.
“You having a party?” He asked.
“Yeah, just closed a fuckin BIG ASS client. Fuck yeah, we’re having a party!”
“Oh man, then I’ve got just the thing for you! Check this shit out.”

Glitter Man reached into his suit jacket and took out a gunmetal gray cigarette case. He opened it, showing us a collection of small neon blue pills inside.
“These right here? These are gonna kick your night up a whole other notch,” He promised. “You want in?”

Ray stared down at the pills, and I could see his eyes widening like a kid who'd just walked into a candy shop.
“Fuck yeah, I want in!” He said with barely a moment of hesitation, and that is when I stepped in.
“Wait up, the fuck are these?” I asked. “Molly?”

“Nah, man. It’s a new thing. Been calling it Blue Lagoon. Trust me, this is the shit! One pill… and you’re never gonna forget tonight. I got a buddy who swears this shit lets him see into other worlds.”
“How much?” Ray asked.
“Tell you what, man. I’ll hook you both up for ten bucks a pop!”

Ray started reaching for his wallet, but I stopped him.
“Dude, we don’t even know what this shit is!” I said.
“C’mon, loosen your asshole and live a little, Geoff!” Ray replied, pulling away from me. “Sorry about my friend, man. He just needs a few more drinks.”
“Hey, no worries!”

Ray handed over twenty bucks and Glitter Man dropped two pills into his hand, before taking off.
“See you around!” He said, and that was it.
“You in this with me?” Ray asked, offering me one of the pills.

I didn’t answer, so he started making a ticking clock noise.
“Times almost up…” He sang, “You gonna get the stick out of your ass and party like a man, or are you gonna pussy out?”

I took the pill, sighed and put it in my mouth.
“ATTA FUCKIN’ BOY!” Ray cried and slapped me on the back, before taking his own pill. “Thought for sure you were gonna go all fuckin’ soft on me!” He teased, “Go full Mr. Mackey from South Park. ‘Drugs are bad, M’kay!’” He laughed at his own bad impression of the show.

He turned back to the bar, reaching into his pocket for a pack of cigarettes.
“Hey, my buddy and I are gonna have two dry martinis!” He said, “Dirty as you can fuckin’ make them!”

He popped one of the cigarettes into his mouth, and that was around the time I noticed that the world around me seemed… off…

I blinked slowly, looking around at the people in the bar. I could’ve sworn that I saw flowers blooming on their skin, but it was hard to get a look at them. They only ever seemed to be there when I wasn’t looking directly at them. From the corner of my eye, I thought I saw something moving behind the dance floor. Some tall, wandering shadow although I couldn’t get a good look at it either. I think that it might have looked at me, with eyes on stalks like some kind of slug. But I couldn’t be sure. It disappeared completely when I tried to look at it head on.

I looked over at the bartender, a relatively plain looking brunette. She glanced at me briefly as she shook our martinis, and I swore that I could see flowers growing out of her hair, wreathing her head in vibrant colors that were impossible to really describe.

I looked over at Ray, and he was staring at her too. I’m not sure what he was seeing, but whatever it was, it had to be beautiful! The man beside me had roses growing out of his eyes and whenever he laughed, I heard a chorus of angels singing. He was holding a giant chameleon that he kept petting, and it was looking at me.
“Think this is DMT?” It asked.
“Who the hell knows?” Said the man. His head was mostly flowers now.

Ray absentmindely handed me my martini, and I took a sip. It tasted like heaven. It tasted like a fresh donut, right out of the oven with the glaze still melty and warm. I wanted to cry from just how beautiful it was!

A hazy mist swirled around me, lifting me up to new levels of paradise. As Ray and I went to the dance floor to join the party, I felt at one with the universe.

A beautiful girl with flawless dark skin danced with me, as we danced I realized that my place in the cosmos was here! Right here!

And then I saw it, really, truly saw it. The grand tapestry of all things. It was right there in her eyes. Right there for me to see. An expanse of events, all seemingly unconnected save for the fact that they contributed to some great, glorious final outcome. A perfect future for all mankind, for all that existed beyond mankind. Hundreds of lives, thousands, millions, billions… perhaps even an infinite amount, all moving parts in an enormous machine, working toward the completion of a single function. Pawns in a grand game whose outcome had been determined outside of time. Every little piece would in it’s own way, fall into place exactly when it needed to, at the moment it needed to, each one carefully guided by a grand design, that operated exclusively through others. An outside force, that pushed them to trigger the events that would lead to the favorable outcome, and arguably, the only outcome, but there really was no big picture to be seen. The end result was something far less finite. It was a state of being. A higher state. A type of perfection that went beyond perfection. Oh, the knowledge of it burned so bright in my skull!

I hugged the girl that I was dancing with and we kissed. She told me that she was proud of me before promptly dissolving into a cloud of butterflies, and as I watched them fly away I laughed, knowing that they too were part of the fabric of the universe! I admired the crowd dancing around me, basking in their radiance. They seemed to go on forever and I could see every aspect of their lives in each of them. Their hopes, their dreams, their aspirations. I loved each of them, and looked into each of their souls, looking at what the greatest possible version of them might be.

From the corner of my eye, I saw a shadow. The same one from before, possibly? I looked at it, watching as it surveyed the crowd. Despite its darkness, I could see its shiny white teeth and beady eyes. The eyes shifted to me for a moment where they lingered, but the shadow didn’t move.

Water flowed around me, distracting me from the shadow again. Fish swam past me, daring me to chase them and I obliged. They promised to take me to a mermaid and teach me how to live in the sea with them. Then I promptly threw up all over some poor girl who was just trying to dance, and after I apologized to her, I tried to explain to the fish that I just needed to sit down for a moment, but by then they’d already turned into seagulls and were just casually shitting on the dude they were sitting on.

I stumbled over to one of the booths and collapsed into it, trying to catch my breath.
“Would you like some cheese, sir.” Asked the sentient platter of cheese on the table underneath me.
“My name is Brie!” Said the brie.

I stared down at the platter, before picking up a cube of cheddar and trying to eat it. For some reason it tasted like a napkin. This was because it was actually a napkin.

My skin felt cold, my hands were shaking a little. The music was way too loud and my mouth was dry.

I looked up.

There were no fantastical creatures around. No fish, no seagulls, no flowers, no talking cheese. Just a normal nightclub.

My head was kind of throbbing.

I took out my phone to look at it. It’d been about an hour since Ray and I had gotten our martinis. Had time really passed that quickly?

Speaking of which, where was Ray?

I looked around for him, before finding him still on the dance floor, dancing like a goddamn maniac. He didn’t seem to be coming down the way that I was. Maybe I’d puked some of the drug up when I’d vomited and it had cut my trip short?

Speaking of which, what the hell was that? DMT or something? I was pretty sure that I’d just hallucinated everything that had just happened. Those had to be hallucinations, right?

I shook my head, before trying to ground myself in the moment. I still felt dizzy and weak. I ended up going to the bar to just get some water before finding another seat where I could rest for a while while Ray partied his little heart out… and after another hour, I started thinking that maybe something was wrong with him.

I noticed that he only seemed to take a break once, and when he did, it was only to head to the bar to get another hard drink. While he was there, I noticed him slipping a familiar gunmetal gray cigarette case out of his pocket. He downed some pills from inside and chased them with a generous sip of whatever he’d gotten. Then, swaying like an idiot he put the cigarette case back in his pocket and lumbered back to the party.

That idiot.

He must’ve bought the whole fucking case off of that weird guy we’d seen earlier! It was one thing to try some weird new drug like a dumbass, but this? This was insane!

I considered going up to him to ask him just what the hell he’d been thinking, but given how out of it he probably was, I knew there wouldn’t be much point to it.

So I resolved to just watch him, and make sure he got home safely like a responsible friend/co-worker. I didn’t really want a repeat of the Vancouver Incident where I’d had to drag him crying like a baby out of a convenience store at 4 AM because they were out of gummy bears. (He’d promised me that it would never happen again and up until now I’d held him to that.)

I guess if nothing else, Ray didn’t seem to be violent or anything while he was high. The bouncers in this place looked pretty tough, and I really didn’t want to have to watch them beat the crap out of him. And it wasn’t until around 2 AM when the party was dying down that I started to notice Ray acting strange. Well… strange compared to the way he’d been acting for most of the night.

He’d seemed more unstable on his feet and seemed less interested in dancing now. He kept looking around frantically, and I saw him take out the cigarette case to look for more pills.

I figured that this was probably the time to get up and stop him.
“Hey, hey… relax, man,” I said, coming up to him and stopping him from taking more of those pills. “Take it easy, alright?”

He looked over at me with wide, bloodshot eyes as I spoke to him.
“Geoff?” He asked in a small voice.
“Yeah, it’s me. Put the pills down. How many of those have you had?”

I took the case from him and looked inside, only to feel my stomach sink a little when I realized that it was empty.

It suddenly occurred to me that I probably should have been watching him closer, to make sure he didn’t take all of the goddamn mystery pills, and I quietly kicked myself for not thinking about that sooner!
“Well shit… you feeling okay, bud?” I asked.
“Fraid…” He slurred, “Universe is… wrong…”

His eyes suddenly widened, filled with a horror that I’m not sure I could properly describe.
“THERE!”

He pointed at something over my shoulder and I looked.
Behind me, sat the unknowable terror that lurks in all places where something ceases to exist and only absence remains… absolutely fucking nothing.

“Maybe we need to get you to a hospital…” I murmured.
“No hospital! N-no hospital!” He said, “Please… Geoff… j-just get me somewhere safe! Please!”

Yeah, I was definitely getting him to a hospital. I’d already made enough dumb decisions for the night. I didn’t really feel up to making one more.
“Alright, let’s get you someplace safe,” I said with a sigh. I took out my phone to call us a cab. “C’mon, Ray.”

He grabbed at me like a scared child as I led him out of the club, jumping at every shadow that we saw on the way out.

***

“So what exactly did he take?” The nurse asked me. She had a sort of deadpan, matter of fact tone and barely even looked at me, while Ray screamed bloody murder in the next room. I gotta say, I wasn’t exactly beaming with pride as I confessed to the nurse that Ray and I had partied in defiance of every 1980s anti-drug PSA we’d grown up with. But it needed to be done.

“I think the guy called it Blue Lagoon,” I said. “I don’t know how many he had, but it was a lot.”
“Blue Lagoon?” The nurse asked, “That’s a new one.”
“Yeah I’ve never heard of it either. I took one of the pills too,” I said. “I was seeing shit for about an hour before I came down. Like, mermaids, talking cheese, flowers… that kinda stuff.”
“So it’s a hallucinogen?” She asked.
“Yeah, I’ve never done DMT but I was thinking it might be similar to that? I don’t know.”
“We’ll take some bloodwork shortly, see if we can’t figure out some more,” She said before leaving me.

I quietly went back to Ray’s room, and watched as he fought against the restraints that bound him to the bed.
His face was bright red from all the screaming and he was sobbing like a little kid as he struggled.
“IT’S COMING! IT’S COMING FOR ME!”

I didn’t bother trying to talk to him. He was still pretty out of it, and he’d been screaming about something coming for him.
“GEOFF!” He sobbed, looking at me. I saw him trying to reach for my hand, “Don’t… don’t leave.. Don’t let him take me, Geoff… please… you gotta let me out of here, YOU GOTTA LET ME RUN!”
“Relax, you’re gonna be okay,” I promised. “I’m gonna stay right here with you.”
The words didn’t seem to do much for him. He just kept fighting and sobbing.

At around 4 in the morning, I finally slept. It was in a chair in one of the waiting rooms, since Ray was still screaming too loud for me to sleep in his room, but I slept. I figured that when I woke up, Ray would have sobered up a bit and we could both go home.

I was wrong.

When I woke up, there was a police officer standing over me, gently shaking my shoulder. My first thought was that the nurse we’d talked to had reported us for taking drugs (which I thought they weren’t supposed to do!) but no.

He just wanted to ask me a few questions about Ray.

My memories of talking to the police are hazy. I don’t entirely remember how the conversation went, but I knew that they’d asked me about where we’d been that night. They asked me if Ray had gotten into any fights, or if I knew anyone who might want to kill him. It wasn’t until around halfway through the conversation that I figured out that Ray was dead.

I never saw the body. It was covered when they wheeled it out of the room.

But I saw the blood.

Good God… all that fucking blood… more than I thought could fit in a person.

From what I heard, none of the nurses saw what happened. At some point, the screaming had just stopped and when they’d come in to check his vitals again, they were greeted by the gory mess that used to be Ray.

After the police talked to me, I didn’t hear a lot about the investigation into Ray’s death. To my knowledge, they never identified any suspects. Hell, I don’t even think they’re entirely sure about what killed him. I heard somebody say it could have been some kind of animal attack, but I think that got shot down pretty quickly, since where the fuck would the animal have come from?

The police cleared me as a suspect in the case pretty quickly, since I’d been asleep when it had happened and there were plenty of witnesses who could confirm I was in the waiting room, passed out.

I imagine that they talked to some people at the nightclub we’d been at too, but I don’t think anything ever came of that. I’d been watching Ray for most of the night. He’d been dancing and having a good time. The only time I hadn’t been keeping an eye on him was when I was hallucinating, and I highly doubt he picked a fight with someone who’d be willing to break into a hospital to murder him during the hour that I was indisposed! There was literally no logical reason he should have died the way he did! There wasn’t a single person I could possibly think of who could have killed him!

Person being the operative word here.

Before he died, Ray had been screaming about something coming for him. My memories of the hallucinations I had after I took that pill are a little hazy, but I remember the shadowy thing I glimpsed among the crowd a few times.

I remember the pitch that the guy who’d sold us the pills had made:
‘I got a buddy who swears this shit lets him see into other worlds!’

Call me crazy… but I’m wondering just how true that pitch was. Maybe not everything we saw after taking those pills was a hallucination. Maybe they let us see something… touch something… and they let that something touch us right back.

I don’t know for sure. But that’s the closest thing to an answer that I’ve got. Either way, I’ve been sober ever since that night and I think I’m going to stay that way.

2023.06.05 07:50 HeadOfSpectre There’s A New Drug Out There Called Blue Lagoon, Whatever You Do, Don’t Try It
