2023.06.09 04:09 absz [YAVP]×28: Polytheist greaterplayer in 28 wins out of 933 games (the fewest possible wins)

I achieved polytheist greaterplayer status in 933 games, taking the minimal number of wins possible (28) by never repeating a background, god, or species unless necessary! You can check out my score page and stats page at the usual places; alternatively (especially if you’re reading this from the future), you can check out my grid or list of wins, also available in a score PDF or stats PDF if you’d rather. (Why did this take 28 wins and not 27, you ask? 0.30, with Armataurs and Reavers, came out while I was playing 0.29, but I’d already won a Palentonga Abyssal Knight!)
You can also find this post at http://singleton-dcss-polytheist-greaterplayer.antalsz.com/minimal-polytheist-greaterplayer.html, in preparation for the upcoming subreddit blackout protest action (solidarity!).
I started playing DCSS just about two years ago (July 31, 2021), although I’d played a bunch of NetHack and some Brogue before. I insisted on my first win being a DEWz^Sif, because dammit, I wanted to win as a caster, and those were the three casteriest choices! (My first NetHack ascension was a Wiz-Elf-Mal-Cha, back in the day.) In retrospect: wow, what a choice. It took me 109 games of trying over a month and a half, but I got that first win!
I then decided I wanted to try something totally different, so I went with a FoFi^Qaz – I loved the sound of a shield plus an executioner’s axe. Again, in retrospect: a Formicid of Qazlal‽ But it only took me 4 games over 4 days to get my second win. (Only had a battleaxe, in the end.)
Around here I committed to the idea of going for polytheist greaterplayer in the minimal number of games, and started to work out my list of characters. One thing I decided on early was that I was going to delay the canonical “easy characters” for new players as late as possible, to… well, to show off, I guess, let’s be honest. So I put DrCj^Veh and MiBe^Trog at 24 and 25 on my list, respectively. Other than that, I let myself play what I wanted, repeating characters until I won, and occasionally tweaking the list. I played on stable, since the thought of a game breaking out from under me on trunk was unappealing. By sheer chance, my very first game from above was the day after the release of 0.27; it took me until after the release of 0.30 to complete my goal.
I really like DCSS. I absolutely love the spellcasting; the different spells feel interesting to cast, and meaningfully different from each other. Casting Maxwell’s Capacitive Coupling is different from Shatter is different from Polar Vortex – or, at lower levels, Foxfire is different from Magic Dart is different from Freeze. The weapon abilities, armor and weapon brands, and random and fixed artifacts all come together for a really dynamic equipment game, too. I think the skilling system is neat but really hard to get a handle on; there’s a high skill ceiling there (no pun intended). On a more meta-level, I really appreciate the philosophy of Crawl, particularly around a lack of grinding. The only downside is how much the game fills my head even when I’m not playing; it’s fun, but potentially a little bit all-consuming.
A couple of spell opinions: if I find Olgreb’s Toxic Radiance early, I’ll try to retool almost any character who plausibly could to cast it; it nukes everything, and means I can hit Orc before Lair. Plus, it trivializes (the offensive part of) Spider and to an extent Shoals. And that’s all without adding in Ignite Poison! Mid- to late-game, I think Yara’s Violent Unravelling is one of the strongest spells available. It cleans up against summoners, so no sudden Tzitzimimeh or Brimstone Fiends or Neqoxecs from your neighborhood demonologists; it dispels scary buffs like haste and might; and it cancels dangerous spells like, in particular, ironbound convokers’ Word of Recall. And it does all this by turning enemies into bombs! What’s not to love? It’s worth going out of your way for, IMO.
I definitely (as one would hope!) improved over the course of this journey. I found myself regularly going for 4 or 5 runes (I got much less scared of Abyss over time, though I still default to Vaults:5 or Slime for my 3rd) and the Vestibule of Hell, though that’s partly because I always like getting stronger characters and seeing what they can do. I learned that I should refine my skilling down to my actual goals, and sometimes even managed to actually do that. By the same token, I’ve at least started to learn to embrace using my consumables. And I just got better at tactics; some of these I got to bring in from NetHack, but others were different (e.g., NetHack’s doors restrict you to 4-way movement, and you can only shoot in the 8 cardinal directions).
What’s next for me with DCSS? Well, I’ll maybe take a bit of a break, but my official score page doesn’t know that Arcane Marksmen were renamed to Hexslingers, so it looks like I’m missing that… and it has an empty column for skald for some reason, so maybe I should fill that in… and while I’m back there, I never did play a deep dwarf or a centaur or… oh hey, the stats page records that I’ve only won 1 draconian color towards Tiamat…. Or I suppose I could just play some games for fun, but hey, where’s the fun in that? :-)
Major thanks to this subreddit, the wiki (so glad it’s back!), the learndb and the knowledge bots, listgame and Sequell, and the #crawl IRC channel for being incredibly valuable resources for learning about DCSS. And my profound gratitude to the Devteam for putting together an incredible game and continuing the development in the open (I lurk #crawl-dev sometimes), and Linley Henzell for writing the original Crawl back in the day.
Here are a few thoughts on my 933-game, 28-win journey, character by character, for anybody who’s interested in some of the details.
  1. DEWz^Sif, 3 runes (109 games). So much floundering, so many bad branch orders, so much confusion about skilling! I was very much learning the game during this – at one point, I said “I think my short sword with rF+ and MP+ is better than a +6 quick blade”. Still, despite everything, I got Shatter castable in my winning game, and that can’t have hurt :-)
  2. FoFi^Qaz, 4 runes (4 games). Things improved pretty fast! This only took me four tries, and I snagged both the silver (for the first time) and slimy runes.
  3. GhEE^Yred, 3 runes (46 games). As of this writing, I hold the only online win for a GhEE^Yred, and I see why. I thought, oh, ghouls have okay earth aptitudes, undead fit with Yredelemnul… nope. It took me until playing demigods (my 27th win) to really understand how important stats are.
  4. SpEn^Wu, 4 runes (30 games). This was fun! Dart, dart, lunge, stab, kaboom! After losing two games here, I put DCSS down for almost a year, and came back to 0.29 (having skipped 0.28 entirely). It also featured my one departure from my rigid plan – I found an early Jiyva altar in a Sewer once, and decided to roll with it (before dying).
  5. PaAK^Lu, 5 runes (4 games). Knowing that Palentongas and Abyssal Knights were being removed, I wanted to get a game in with them. Conveniently, I’d already planned on playing a PaAK. It was so different – I’d gotten so used to running away!
  6. FeSu^OneiGozag>Jiyva, 15 runes (2 games). I saw oneirical’s guide/s and was just so tempted, so I rejiggered my list to fit it in. What a blast! The guide was good enough that this only took me two tries, and that was for my very first time in extended (beyond the Vestibule of Hell), a ziggurat (which I completed!) or even the Crypt! Thanks, oneirical!
  7. OgGl^Oka, 3 runes (137 games). I don’t know why I found this so hard – harder even than my DEWz when learning the game! The thinking was: go Okawaru, get a great artifact giant spiked club from them, get a bunch of large rocks from them, Hulk smash. I didn’t get that GSC, but I did smash things with a great mace they gave me and a GSC that I enchanted myself.
  8. NaVM^Chei, 4 runes (10 games). Olgreb’s Toxic Radiance my beloved. I found the woodcutter’s axe on D:5 in the hands of a gnoll bouda in a vault, and it almost killed me (6673 D:5 HP: 3/70 [gnoll bouda/the +3 woodcutter's axe {vorpal} (1)]), but I used it for the rest of the game – it’s an awesome find on a spellcaster, I never put a single skill point into Axes.
  9. HOMo^Beogh, 4 runes (27 games). My first time playing skill-target games to get a title – I wanted to be a Messiah, so I targeted Fighting at 26.9 while letting Invocations hit 27 (and dipped into a ziggurat to get my piety back up after Z:5).
  10. DjFE^Makh, 15 runes (41 games). I really like Djinn. You can cast so much! I had the Elemental Staff, which was great fun; Iron Shot + Chain Lightning is a great pair of spells, too. After I realized how much I could cast, I made it a point not to make any physical attacks – in the end, I only made three mêlée attacks all game, and they were all accidental (and no throwing at all). This character just felt super strong, so after finishing Zot I decided to take my first unguided journey into extended, and ended up completing two ziggurats after getting all my runes. (Lom Lobon was scary, though – I had multiple close calls and used a ton of scrolls of blinking.)
  11. VSWr^Usk, 8 runes (43 games). I’m proud of this game for being one where (1) I realized I could go into extended, but (2) I realized that discretion was the better part of valor and left early after exiting a ziggurat with single-digit HP from a mummy floor. I used an artifact spear of speed all game because I found it early and it was fast enough to capitalize on my bite, but I think that was a mistake and I should’ve gone to/back to short blades to get the stabbing bonus (never found a quick blade, though). On the upside, I found a potion of experience in a bailey in my winning game, only to discover I was already carrying two others! I made the tactical error of Grand Finale-ing the Royal Jelly, and then almost dying to engulfment by quicksilver oozes.
  12. TeAE^Zin, 5 runes (5 games). Since I was worshiping Zin I wanted to go to Hell, but this character didn’t feel strong enough. Otherwise, not terribly remarkable. I did pick up Wyrmbane in Depths, which was a good time, as I was barely doing any physical combat before that.
  13. BaAM^Hep, 5 runes (1 game!). My only one-and-won and consequently (due to my play-one-character-repeatedly approach) my only streak! Barachi, Hexslinger (formerly Arcane Marksman), and Hepliaklqana all seem to be really strong together. And it didn’t hurt that I bought Zephyr in a shop in Snake; that thing is nuts. I did a little bit of a ziggurat before Zot:5, but decided to take the 5-rune win rather than get cocky.
  14. MfIE^TSO, 15 runes (43 games). At first, a Mf^TSO was where I was planning to do extended for the first (and only?) time; thanks to oneirical, I learned I needn’t be so scared. Still, I decided I was going to take this character all the way; I wanted to play with one of TSO’s holy weapons! So… I died to Gloorx Vloq due to lethal poison. But eventually I made it! I got to use both a eudemon blade from The Shining One and the trishula “Condemnation”, so really taking advantage of all the Merfolk aptitudes. I even cleared a ziggurat! Other highlights include accidentally clearing Slime without rCorr (it was only on an artifact weapon, and I forgot I wasn’t using it until after dispatching TRJ) and realizing in a ziggurat that a potion of attraction + Cleansing Flame can actually recover you a lot of health as a worshiper of TSO against smiters/damnationers/tormenters who are trying to keep their distance.
  15. MuNe^Ash, 5* runes (20 games). My winning game got one extended rune – icy, from Cocytus (in addition to silver, slimy, barnacled, and serpentine). It didn’t seem to me like Mummies were as hard as people say, but that might be because Ashenzari is as good as people say. I had a very frustrating death where I tried to take advantage of being undead to clear some of Tomb:1 but misremembered how far in I could go – and this in a game where I forgot to do Vaults:1–4 and went straight to Depths, and cleared it! My winning game, I went back and revenged myself on the safe part of Tomb:1, at least. I also killed Mennas and dipped into a ziggurat. I was surprised how good Haunt was; I took it as a lesson in the danger of being surrounded.
  16. KoDe^Dith, 5 runes (16 games). It’s amazing how good an early stab on a red enemy as a Delver feels, as you rocket up in XP. I hit #********* stealth before picking up the orb.
  17. HuCA^Ignis, 3 runes (23 games). I know it’s not “intended”, but I had to keep Ignis for polytheist. That meant I underused their abilities, since I was nervous about running out. In my winning run, Wyrmbane was graciously donated by Maggie on D:8, and I dropped axes like a hot potato. Obnoxiously, though, the very first gloves to spawn were the Mad Mage’s Maulers on Shoals:4.
  18. VpBr^Kiku, 5 runes (32 games). I definitely preferred to be bloodless; the benefits seem really strong. Not much else to say here.
  19. MeAr^Ely, 3 runes (18 games). I was not looking forward to this; I play slooooowly. But it was more fun than I expected! Elyvilon is great, and not just in 0.29 for Meteorans where you can use them to get rid of your Zot clock drain (a synergy I opted into accidentally). Smite-targeted “Heal Other” to OHKO enemies? Amazing. And Meteoran aptitudes are great! Still, not planning to do this again any time soon. Also I’m kicking myself for missing an enchant weapon scroll that would’ve let me bring my lajatang up to +9. How do people take Meteorans into extended? I felt like I was running out of Zot clock so often!
  20. GnWn^Nem, 5 runes (6 games). I got to be a hybrid tank casting 5th and 6th level spells in crystal plate, what’s not to love? Also vampiric axes are incredible. Nemelex wasn’t too shabby either. Unfortunately, I really wanted to rescue Crazy Yiuf this run, but I wasn’t thinking and killed him with Manifold Assault trying to get a balrug while standing on the exit.
  21. GrCK^Xom, 10 runes (48 games). The Xom-meister! Another run I wasn’t looking forward to (I had this and Meteoran classed as “Miserable” in my planning document), so I paired it with a powerful species. I got a bit cocky and wanted to try extended runes with Xom due to some great equipment, so of course I died in Pandemonium with 7 runes on game 6 (I hadn’t noticed that I could read scrolls again). But I did eventually win with a ziggurat and the 5 Pan runes; I tried Cocytus, escaped a hairy situation, and decided enough was enough with Xom. Extended runes with Xom! I’m proud of that, but no more Xom for me, thanks.
  22. OpTm^Gozag, 15 runes (9 games). After oneirical’s guide, I sort of figured this character would do 15 runes. And boy howdy did it. (Plus a ziggurat!) Dragon Form was strong early, Storm Form and Necromutation were naturally stronger later. (This might be the run where I forgot how to do extended without Necromutation, actually.) And Bribe Branch is bonkers strong; Zot:5 and Tomb were so chill. Bonus: the Octopode lich tile is so cute! Thank you, sastreii!
  23. DsHu^Fedhas, 5 runes (66 games). Some sloppy play made this take so many games. (What early-me would’ve said to calling this “so many”!) Fedhas seems quite good, although in retrospect going ranged with Demonspawn means your body mutations feel pretty pointless unless you get antennae… which I did in my winning game, so that’s nice :-) Overgrow is neat; I was able to crack into the Zot lungs, but I sadly didn’t get a Gauntlet so I couldn’t sequence-break it.
  24. DrCj^Veh, 15 runes (5 games). As I mentioned, I deliberately put off the canonical “easy characters” as late as I could. So here was a (grey) DrCj^Veh, the magic character that, in retrospect, maybe I should’ve started with. (I think renaming “Wizard” to “Hedge Wizard” plus changing the abbreviation was a good call.) Okay, so taking it into extended and completing a Ziggurat isn’t a starting-character approach! Shatter remains great, but I feel like Fire Storm is overrated? I got to use the Elemental Staff again, which is always a treat!
  25. MiBe^Trog, 3 runes (4 games). Ah, the classic starting character. This is as late as I could put it: 25th, the final background. (After this, I had to repeat something until the release of 0.30, but that happened later.) What is there to say? I acquired “the +9 executioner's axe "Cusuarph" {vorpal, rC+ Dex+4}” in a Bailey on turn 10129, basically stapled it to my hands almost immediately (it hit mindelay mid-Lair), and then threw on some crystal plate I found in Elf:3. Grandplayer complete!
  26. TrGl^Ru, 4 runes (19 games). Now I was into repeats! I found this character challenging, but Ru is really strong. I lost a character with the scales of the Dragon King and the shield of the gong in Slime after clearing Vaults, which was more than a bit tragic, but my winning game found mundane gold dragon scales on D:7 so it worked out. I sacrificed Arcana (Earth, Hexes, and Necromancy, not that it mattered), Nimbleness, Stealth, Artifice, and Drink, which worked out. Polytheist complete! (Unless that includes atheist.)
  27. DgHW, 15 runes (153 games). I decided I wanted to close out the 0.29 list with a Hedge Wizard, coming back to where I started. Then. That took. Forever. The most games of any combo. 0.30 came out while I was working on this character! Admittedly, I lost six different Demigods in extended that I could’ve taken to a 3–5-rune win. (Fuck Dis, fuck Ziggurats.) My first extended loss was after a much more reasonable 23 games (and I claim partly due to lag – I hit Xkk to examine a panlord while at lowish health, the game missed the X, and… not that I would necessarily have survived anyway, but still). After 30 games, the 0.30 tournament started, and although Call Imp got a lot better, I didn’t get a single win during the tourney as I kept brute-forcing extended (but did get the combo high score, somehow). I finally won, using Chain Lightning and very aggressive casting of Maxwell’s Capacitive Coupling. I tried to do a ziggurat after Dis but before Tartarus (!) of all places, and while I found the Necromutation I was looking for, I had to bail. After Tomb, I decided I really wanted the ziggurat completion, and tried again – I had to run through most of the final floors, but I got out! And finally rescued Crazy Yiuf, to boot! If you require atheist, then now it was polytheist complete!
  28. AtRe^faded altar Jiyva, 4 runes (12 games). Now that 0.30 was out, I had Armataurs and Reavers to win. So, like everybody else, I played a bunch of AtRes. I went for a faded altar when I could, since I hadn’t done that yet. My first game? Xom. It actually went pretty well, though, despite the eventual death (after conversion to Cheibriados). My eventual win was with a faded altar Jiyva from D:3, and while the loss of consumables wasn’t great, you hit max piety fast. I definitely underused their abilities, particularly later. But I made it out. And with that: greaterplayer complete!!
If you really did make it all the way down here, thanks for reading everything! I really like Crawl, but don’t have a ton of folks I know in my daily life who play/ed it, so it’s nice to share with a community who knows what I’m talking about :-)

2023.06.08 19:51 SassyDimple Passed S66 using STC & Dean

First time Series 66 test taker here! Used STC for the majority of my studying. Here are what my study habits looked like:
Read one chapter Watched the chapter video Practiced with chapter flashcards
Repeated for each chapters: 1-3 4-6 7-9 10-12
I took progress exams and final exams in between each bunch of chapters.
On the morning of the exam I Watched Dean's "Series 66 in 60 Minutes" video.
The exam itself was composed of 50% easy questions, 30% difficult questions, and 20% intermediate questions.
But, that is just based on my personal preparation.
Good luck to you all!!

2023.06.08 19:29 Lord_of_Brass Psychic Damage Output

I previously had complained about the generally low Psychic damage of Ahriman and Aspiring Sorcerers, and the response was almost universally "They're reducing Psychic damage across the board."
Well, the Tyranids laugh in the face of that justification.
Let's compare, and let's be generous and assume that Ahriman is leading a unit of Rubrics so he benefits both from his own Rubric Lord (+1 to Wound) and the Rubrics' Bringers of Change (re-roll Wound rolls of 1 on ranged attacks). We'll also be attacking MEQs, since the math is easy that way (T4, 3+ save, no invuln).
Ahriman's Psychic Stalk in that instance does 1.42 average wounds (one shot, 2+ to hit, 2+ to wound re-rolling 1s, 4+ modified save, d6 damage). That's right, Ahriman doesn't even do enough average Psychic damage to kill one Marine per round. And even if he gets lucky and rolls a 6 for damage, that's still only going to kill one Marine because he only fires one shot.
For fun, an Aspiring Sorcerer with the same buffs does 1.02 damage per shot (hitting on 3s, mortal wounds on 3s to wound, re-rolling 1s). So between the two of them that's a collective damage output of 2.44.
Let's compare that with some Tyranids' Psychic damage output against the same targets, shall we?
Literally every single unit in the Tyranid index with a Psychic attack - either as a single model or, in the case of Zoanthropes, at their minimum unit size - puts out more Psychic damage than Ahriman and his apprentice Aspiring Sorcerer COMBINED.
Even if you want to be generous and include a Doombolt, that's on average 5 Mortal wounds which brings them up to 7.44 average damage, which is STILL LESS than what the Maleceptor does against squads of 5 or larger. Let me repeat that: Ahriman, plus an Aspiring Sorcerer, plus a Doombolt, does less total Psychic damage than a single Maleceptor.
Someone tell me why, as a Thousand Sons player whose favorite part of the faction was casting spells and deleting units with magic, I should be at all excited for 10th edition at this point.

Chapter Summaries:
Chapter 64: Treasures:
POV: Kaladin, Shallan
Kaladin is still in prison and is becoming more depressed, not eating, not caring etc. He’s also having trouble drawing stormlight and Syl is acting flighty like when Kaladin first met her. Meanwhile, in Taln’s cell, Shallan wraps herself in Stormlight, turns herself black and hides in a corner. Amaram questions the madman, focusing on a cache of Shardblades Bordin mentioned. However, the madman continues to rant, and Amaram still wants to seek out these hidden Shardblades. Amaram leaves as does Shallan after copying down the madman’s words and giving the paper to Iyatil for the Ghostbloods. Later, Mraize sends a message welcoming her to the Ghostbloods.
Chapter 65: The One Who Deserves It
POV: Shallan, one and a half years ago
Shallan begins to take action to get Balat, Eylita and Malise out and away from the Davar estate and her father. She marvels at the concept of freely choosing one’s own role.
Chapter 66: Stormblessings
POV: Kaladin
Kaladin spirals deeper into depression in the cell but he is suddenly released from prison. He finds that Adolin insists on sharing Kaladin’s incarceration which brings them to a mutual understanding. Kaladin is given a Blade and Plate for his role in the duel and he gifts them to Moash, to show he trusts him. As Bridge Four and other bridgemen cheer Kaladin’s release and go to celebrate, Kaladin talks with Moash and agrees that Alethkar will be better off if King Elhokar is assassinated, which Moash is happy about.
Chapter 67: Spit and Bite
POV: Dalinar
Dalinar and Navani are attending another feast they’d rather avoid. Navani updates Dalinar about fabrials while Dalinar’s mind wanders on his upcoming expedition across the Shattered Plains. Navani reveals she is trying to take her mind off Jasnah, suddenly breaking down and crying. At the feast, everyone is acting weird around Dalinar, which Amaram reveals is due to someone leaking Navani’s accounts of his visions. Navani reports that the reports have been twisted to make Dalinar look foolish. Refusing to be embarrassed, Dalinar steps onto a table and reports the visions as true. He spends the rest of the evening reporting on the visions, and has a troubling conversation with Wit.
Chapter 68: Bridges
POV: Kaladin
House Kholin heads onto the Shattered Plains for an expedition, which will allow Shallan to see a chasmfiend chrysalis. Kaladin is still failing to draw in Stormlight. He sees a carpenter he recognizes but can’t place. Moash informs Kaladin that the assassination is almost ready and his part will be simple and easy. Adolin distracts Kaladin with a conversation about the Assassin in White, women and an attempt to figure out Kaladin’s powers, which Kaladin admits nothing. They still have a moment of camaraderie together all the same. After conversing with Dalinar about the mobile bridges, as Dalinar crosses a bridge, Kaladin suddenly recognizes the carpenter as one of Sadeas’ and tries to warn Dalinar. Adolin reaches Dalinar as Kaladin reaches Shallan and the bridge collapses.
Chapter 69: Nothing
POV: Kaladin, Shallan - The Chasms
As Syl screams, Kaladin gets a rush of Stormlight and hits the bottom, hurting but alive. Shallan and Kaladin meet up and both theorize privately how they saved the other from a 200 ft fall. They search the bodies in the chasm and do not find Dalinar or Adolin, only dead spearmen and Parshendi. A highstorm is due the following night and they need to make it back to the warcamps. Shallan admires the variety of planet life in the chasm while Kaladin is focused on getting them out. They snark back and forth at each other louder and louder until a noise puts a stop to their arguing: an approaching chasmfiend. They run.
Chapter 70: From A Nightmare
POV: Shallan, Kaladin
Kaladin leads the mad dash through the chasms to escape the beast chasing them. Shallan suddenly leads them back to where they first fell with the dead bodies and the beast begins feeding on the bodies. Shallan takes a Memory of the beast and they continue walking, wanting to get as far from the chasmfiend as possible. Shallan manages to draw a map of the chasms which they use to navigate their way through. They get to talking and open up some, Shallan swearing she means no harm to Adolin or his family. Sunlight reveals that they are going the wrong way.

2023.06.08 07:06 Vegetable-Mark930 Any suggestiongs for possible career moves or jobs?

I graduated with a B. Sc. in Biochemistry with Honours (because I wasn't excited to do only bio courses -- too much memorization or only chem courses -- not a fan of calculus in chem and I actually enjoyed Science in high school) and yes, I had silly aspirations to do med school (but sadly not smart enough to do well in MCAT). I completed my Honours project in Organic Synthesis and I enjoyed working with my professor, but had no plans of doing Master's since I was tired of being in university and being in student debt.
I graduated during 2020 (yay covid) and applied everywhere I could. My lack of work experience definitely was a big stumbling block. After 8 months, I received only 1 interview which was for the position as a Quality Control Analyst at a start-up pharmaceutical company for $16/hr. I was desperate and took the position, but that was a mistake lol. It was definitely a steep learning curve. The training was completely irrelevant to the actual sample testing. I ran HPLC, GC, UV, TOC and a few other equipment. I think I adjusted well to the high stress environment, but the manager was the type to micromanage and call you out when you needed to work overtime (ps. you don't get paid overtime because it's your fault). The reason I had to work overtime was because there were only 3 weighing scales (2 analytical balances and 1 micro-analytical balance) and 30 people in the lab. There is a long wait time to weigh your reagents for your HPLC mobile phase and samples depending on the test done. There were also not enough fume hoods for everyone (only 5). Plus, all of our equipment is secondhand and constantly malfunctioning. Inventory of the standards were a mess. Our lab has constantly brought up all these issues with the manager and they said they'll fix it but nothing ever happened. I tried to hang on to this job telling myself that once I get experience here, I can get a job in another less toxic lab. I started applying to other labs after my 1 year of experience, but I never got an interview. Fast forward to 8 months later, the company wanted to expand the lab by moving to a new location which would add 30 more minutes to my commute. I was already getting up at 6:00 am to come to the lab early at 7:30 am (even though my shift is at 8:00 am) and staying late till 5:30 pm (even though my shift ends at 4:30 pm). We had no 15 min breaks and only 1 hour lunch break. There were some days I was able to leave earlier, but some days, they give you more samples at 4:00 pm so you end up staying later. There were alot of more issues with this place like their high turnover rate in the Quality Control and Production departments. They're always looking to hiring more people. I also noticed that if an analyst worked harder, they would give that analyst more samples as opposed to another analyst who would only have 1 sample for the day and that analyst would spend the time just talking with other people. Essentially, I hit my breaking point 1 year and 8 months into the job and asked my friends if there was a position at any of their workplaces.
By some miracle, my friend referred me for a Clinical Research Assistant role at her workplace and I got the job in spite my lack of experience in clinical trials. I enjoyed the environment and slower pace that the office brought. I was so used to being constantly on my feet and making sure that I was finished with a certain task by a certain time. Those habits still carry on to my new job. I enjoy working with my immediate coworkers and I find the job easy enough once I understood the regulations. My only annoyance is the slow uptake in recruiting patients for one of my studies. My study was designed by a nephrologist new to clinical research and he's been pushing me to increase the recruitment rate due to the expiry date of funding. I'm trying not to pressure myself for something I can't control. It's not like I can force patients that are about to go on dialysis to do this study when they don't feel well. This is definitely one of my biggest annoyances. We had to open another site for recruitment and now, I travel to two hospitals to recruit patients, but I'm not getting any parking reimbursement. I've asked for advice from senior coworkers and my manager about how I can increase recruitment. They told me that I'm already doing well and not to be too pushy for recruitment.
My current job is at $20.66/hr and also offers nephrologists as a supervisor for your thesis to complete a Masters in Community Health Science (I still have to pay for the courses myself), but I'm not sure if I can see clinical research as a career since it's entirely dependent on patient recruitment (some patients are very difficult to work with especially sick ones) and I can't see myself working in a lab again. Does anyone have advice for possible career moves?
I'm willing to get back into studying again, but preferrably not more than 2 years long. I'm tired of learning info I won't use in the actual workforce (would rather not do a PhD). I've heard good things about Regulatory Affairs and Data Analyst. I'm the type to work hard and may work slower because I am very detail-oriented. I've even thought of just abandoning the physical and health sciences altogether and switching to computer science for a higher wage. I don't want to job hop after 1 year and 3 months from this job so I'll stick it out for maybe 1-2 years.
Please note: I live in Canada in one of the lesser provinces of Manitoba. Our job market may be terrible, but I'm not financially able to move elsewhere (Note: Student debt). Apologies if I seem whiny and stressed out over the little things. Just tired from the grind and having no decent benefits or paid vacation time.

  2. A bolded matchup means that there is a "Probability of Precipitation" greater than 50% in a non-domed stadium at the time of this post.
  3. An italicized matchup means that it is Game 2 of a doubleheader, which for Pick'Em purposes will not be applicable (only Game 1 is counted, but Game 2 is still included above so that you can be aware that pitching management may be different than a non-doubleheader game day).
  4. Probable pitchers and stats sourced from mlb.com (via the MLB-StatsAPI); weather data soured from the OpenWeather One Call API.
  5. Estimated chance of winning percentages sourced from FiveThirtyEight’s 2023 MLB Game Predictions, an ELO-based, easy to understand ratings system.
Details such as probable pitchers, winning odds, and match certainty are subject to change. Note that a pick for a team in a cancelled game (weather or otherwise) is automatically counted as a correct guess.

2023.06.08 05:26 Wendyzattic How I passed my PMP Certification Test in 3 weeks

As many project managers are, I am very busy with work. I average 60-65 hours a week and along with wanting to get my PMP, I am also working to get my degree. All this to say, I don't have a lot of time.
So what worked for me? Study Hall, Study Hall, Study Hall, and learning the PM mindset.
I purchased AR's Udemy course and it bored me to tears. I literally played it in the background just to get through it. I also purchased his TIA exams last minute when I thought I was unprepared and read on this subreddit that it helped someone else. For me, they were easy and after taking the exam, his questions were nothing like it in my opinion. I also watched DM's agile 200 PMP questions and his 150 PMBOK 7 questions. I found them pretty easy to answer myself with basic logic. Lastly, I bought 3rdRock a coffee and reviewed his notes. Honestly, it was far too much to read and the mindset areas were all I looked at.
My test scores for SH were as follows:
Full Exam 1: 72% - (73.7% w/o Exp or 88% w/o exp and diff)
Full Exam 2: 66% - (72% w/o Expert or 91% w/o diff or expert)
My average scores for practice exams and tests were 75%.
I answered and reviewed all my answers...even the ones I got right as many times I wasn't sure when I chose an answer and reviewing all of them helped me to understand the logic of the questions. I probably studied for a minimum of 50 -60 hours.
My EXAM:
I took it at a test center. They sat me and when they started the test, it errored out. This happened three times and after 40 minutes of them trying to figure it out, they were telling me I was going to have to reschedule as this was a 'nationwide' issue in all their test centers for tests that were internet based. I sunk. I could not have this hanging over my head any longer and begged them to try one more time to start the test. They felt sorry for me and tried again, and magically the test began. PHEW! I went through the tutorial, started the test and was shocked to find I could not confidently pick the answers for the first 15 questions!! Everyone had said how the first test was the easiest??? WTH?! Anyway, I kept going and took my first break after 60 questions. I literally took about 2 minutes to walk to the lobby and get water, give myself a pep talk and went right back to the test. After all, you can fail 15 questions and still pass, right? So I took the last two sections, without a break. The last two tests for me were easier than the first but, TBH, I didn't have a comfortable feeling for the most part. I think the stress of the morning and the first 15 shot my confidence. In the end, after question #180 with 110 minutes left on the clock, I ended my test. To my utter shock, I PASSED! Not only did I pass but I got the coveted AT/AT/AT.
In reflection, what saved me? Study Hall and the PM Mindset. Study Hall helps you get the cadence of the questions. They are worded VERY similar to the exam. The PM Mindset will help you answer the questions that you didn't know you knew and get you a pass on the test. For question types, I had a few drag and drop, a PERT and some multiple choice like everyone else, but mainly 95% scenario based.
So, I hope my experience can help someone out there wondering if they will pass. To everyone on this Reddit that posted their experiences in the past three weeks, thank you! While others think this is wasted, for me it was motivation and a path to my success.

2023.06.08 05:10 MinieC Kirby Dach Stats Analysis

Kirby Dach Stats Analysis
Bio
Kirby Dach was born on January 21, 2001 in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. A 6'4", 212 lbs right shot centre, Dach was drafted 3rd overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in in 2019. He started his NHL career (some would say he was rushed) the same year, playing his first on game October 20, 2019 against Washington, centering Patrick Kane and Dylan Strome, first line no less (no pressure kid!). He scored his first goal two days later against Vegas.
After disapointing seasons in Chicago, Dach was traded to Montreal on draft day for the 13th overall pick (which the habs acquired from the Islanders in exchange for Alexander Romanov) and a third-round pick. So in substance, it was Dach for Romanov.
As per Cap Friendly, Dach signed a 4 year, $13,450,000 contract Sep. 7, 2022. The contract has a cap hit of $3,362,500. He will be a RFA at the end of the 2025-26 season when he is 25 years old.
Basic Stats
(I'm not including 2020-21 because he only played 18 games...)
Season GP TOI G A1 A2 Total P/GP FOW%
21-22 70 18:03 9 9 8 26 0.37 32.8
22-23 58 18:30 14 15 9 38 0.66 38.3
2 years 128 18:15 23 24 17 64 0.50 34.5
Dach's offensive production increased significantly after the trade; from 0.37 PPG in 2021-22 to 0.66 in 2022-23. He still has poor face-offs numbers but there has been improvements.
Points Distribution
Season EV PP SH With EN Total
21-22 19 5 1 1 26
22-23 20 16 2 38
2 years 39 21 3 1 64
42% of Dach's production last year came on the Power Play, producing 16 points in 58 games compared to 5 points in 70 games with Chicago. He was our most effective player on the PP with a production rate of 4.89/60. The low production with his previous team wasn't because of low usage as Dach played 1:55 on average, which is significant. MTL increased his PP TOI to 3:25 while reducing his penalty kill responsibilities.
Season TOI EV PP SH
21-22 18:03 15:01 1:55 1:07
22-23 18:30 14:04 3:25 0:21
Rate of production at Even Strength (no special teams, no empty nets)
Season EV G/60 Rank* % EV A1/60 % Rank* Primary Points/60 Rank* %
21-22 0.41 361/438 18% 0.47 256/438 42% 0.88 351/438 20%
22-23 0.58 276/437 37% 0.58 210/437 52% 1.16 254/437 42%
\* rank vs all forwards with a minimum of 300 minutes played
Dach's impressive power play production was (a bit) hiding his ordinary production rate at even strength. But again, there was considerable improvement from 2021-22. He went from the 20% percentile in primary point production per 60 minutes of play to the 42% percentile.
Advanced Stats - On Ice
More info on advanced stats terms and concepts: Beyond the Box Score - An Intro to Hockey Analytics
Note: the following results are not adjusted for deployment, quality of competition, quality of teammates, etc.
On-Ice CF% Team Rank xGF% Team Rank xGF/60 Team Rank xGA/60 Team Rank
2021-22 44.72 9/14 45.49 9/14 2.12 6/14 2.53 13/14
2022-23 48.07 3/17 48.3 2/17 2.68 2/17 2.86 5/17
Dach might not have had an impressive point production rate, but his 'underlying' numbers were excellent with the habs and such a contrast to Chicago. From being one of the worst player in all these metrics, he was one of the best in Montreal.
Dach's tour de force is how he made Suzuki and Caufield better. With Dach, the first line's expected goal for share (xGF%) was 50.5, without Dach, it fell to 30.48. I remember Dach saying he enjoyed playing centre, but if he can't improve his face-off percentage and if the team can't find another compatible winger for Suzuki-Caufield, Dach might have to continue playing wing...

(please note the 43.3% of Dach without Suzuki and Cole, I'll get back to it)
Advanced Stats - Goals Above Replacement (GAR), RAPM and Player Card
When stats take into consideration point production, on-ice stats, teammates, opposition and deployment.

Dach was barely over the replacement line in his two last season with Chicago. The trade did him wonders.
z-score of 0 = league average
Not suprisingly, Dach's play driving in Chicago wasn't great. His offense and defense were below league average.
z-score of 0 = league average
Dach turned into quite the play driver in Montreal :). I must admit, after the trade happened and having access to these graphs, I was quite puzzled. According to these graphs, it really looked like Dach was going to bust territory and I was quite weary of the contract habs management awarded him. Goes to show that stats are complementary information, but not the answer to everything. A player could be amazing, but other factors could impact performance. Stats are a tool, among all others to evaluate a player's performance. A bad or good 'player card' is not proving anything.

Dach's player card, including his last two years in Chicago. Dach is one of the few habs players with positive 'goals above replacement' defensive results. There doesn't seem to be any weakness to his game other than his offensive production at even strength (his underlying numbers are great so I'm not worried, production will come) and taking dumb penalties.
Context
In 2021-22 with Chicago, Dach faced the toughest competition along with Hagel. Maybe a factor as to why he had poor results; that's a lot of responsibilities for a player so young.

With the habs, competition was a bit easier with Suzuki and Caufield taking much of the hard match-ups. That could have been an easy explanation for Dach's improvement but Dach actually played his best hockey alongside Suzuki and Caufield, facing tough match-ups. So it's more complex than that.

Conclusion
Dach saw an amazing improvement since being traded to Montreal. All his stats improved, especially his one-ice stats. He turned out to be a great linemate to Suzuki and Caufield who struggled without him. However, it's interesting to note that Dach also saw his on-ice results getting worse without the duo (43.3 xGF% vs 50.50 xGF%). Dach was playing wing with Suzuki and Caufield. He was playing centre away from them. He was playing centre in Chicago...
There are a lot of factors explaining Dach's drastic improvement in Montreal. Could one of them include Dach being more suited on wing than at centre...?

It's been great lurking this group during my studying so now it's time to hopefully add some value.
My firm uses STC. For the 7 & 66 I watched the lecture video for each chapter with the learning guide, then did 25 flash cards, then a 10-20 Q practice test. Took the progress exams when suggested by the included calendar breakdown. Then I hit youtube! Between series 7 guru Dean and Capital Advantage Ken Finnen there's some great content. For the 7 I watched a ton of videos then took the STC practice tests. For the 66 I watched a bunch of videos and took Dean and Ken's practice tests. Listening to their explications was not only super helpful, but when I would pause to think it through and answer, then unpause and Dean would explain it almost exactly the way I just did it I knew I was ready. That was a lot of words. I hope it helps someone like the other posts helped me. Put in the work so it's easy to go in confident, then crush it! You got this!
