2023.05.18 19:39 Frankwillie87 Drake tax software begone

Looking to leave Drake as the non-existent batch extensions, the constant toggling between data entry and view mode, and the quirky multi state issues are just too much of a time sink to deal with any longer.
Are there any softwares out there that have similar input screens that are intuitive, but more robust functionality?
Did a demo for Lacerte, have used ProSeries in the past, and was thrown off from UltraTax after a bad experience with a rep on a 5 year contract lock. I am about to check out CCH Axcess/Prosystems/ATX, and aren't really thrilled with a lot of the options so far from a value to price standpoint. Any other suggestions?

2023.05.12 20:04 AffectionatePhase358 CCH Axcess Tax + Workstream + End Delivery Product

We are making the shift from Prosystem Tax to CCH Axcess Tax.
CCH has never done a good job providing technical answers and everything is always a sales pitch. Trying to have an idea of where we want the process to be before the training begins.
Does anyone that's already made the switch have any time saving tips you didn't learn until down the line? We're a team of ~30 on the tax side and revamping the process for simplicity.

We are exploring the end delivery options out there. CCH's portal / client collaboration fell short so we will not be using it. We currently use Citrix ShareFile + RightSignature for delivery, but it's not very efficient and our clients struggle with the portal system.
TaxDome was great but it doesn't seem like a good fit for a firm our size.
SafeSend looks ideal for saving time on the end product delivery. My concern is (1) access only being through a link which clients will consistently need access to and (2) The portal system not having a true client side portal. Without that I see a lot of administrative burden with the drop box style for items outside Organizer Source Docs. It's hard to completely eliminate the ShareFile portals without it - our clients like having the subfolders to stay organized for multiple filings.
Firm360 didn't seem worth it since changing our billing system is off the table.

2023.05.05 17:10 volunteertax Best way to send Tax Organizers?

We are a smaller tax firm with around 1,800 clients. About 1,200 1040s per year. Our biggest time waster every year is going back and forth with clients once we start their return about documents they had in prior year, because they seem to always forget... We use CCH Axcess for Tax Prep and Canopy for client portal. Canopy has their own organizer, but it does not include past year documents. I know you can print an organizer from CCH, but would have to do so for all 1,200 clients and send to them. What do other firms use to print/send organizers? Anything you really like? Thanks!

2023.05.01 20:24 Ruthlessrabbd I am so tired of contacting vendor support and re-explaining my case to different people

I just need to rant before this ruins the rest of my work day lol!
I'm a one-man IT show, and often times a lot of the issues my users run into pertains specifically to software that we get from other vendors. I self-troubleshoot using their support pages, best guesses, and prior experiences, but sometimes I end up having to go through their ticketing system.
What I absolutely LOATHE is taking several minutes to fully describe an issue in detail with supporting pictures and information, only to have the support chat start with 'How can I help you today?' It seems pointless to give any user input in some of their ticketing systems because it seemingly isn't visible to the support agent. CCH is the one I see this the most, and I just no longer give any context on an issue until I'm talking with somebody.
Now the other annoying thing is when you get transferred to a different team after working with one team for a bit, and have to fully re-explain everything about the case! Maybe I'm asking too much, genuinely, but I wish that the process was more transparent for the support agents to see the information that already exists or for phone calls that they have the ability to review a transcript before talking to me.
That is all - and it feels better to get this out there!

2023.04.28 16:13 alucard13132012 CCH Axcess as a Published App on Windows 2016

Not sure where to start on this. Please bear with me folks. I will try to make a long story short, but I usually end up making it longer.
We had a new partner come in about a year and a half ago and from the start only wanted to use Axcess (we were using Prosystems). Somehow he got the powers that be to switch over to Axcess right before tax season this year. The testing was mediocre at best (thats another story).
We (I.T.) tried to fight it because (well honestly because of other reddit posts) its a lot slower than Prosystems and we know our users would complain and blame I.T., which is exactly what happened. We somehow got through tax season but got word from someone in one of the departments that they had a meeting and talked about how slow it was and to be prepared for that conversation.
The way we had it working was we installed the software (Axceess, Adobe, Excel and Word) on a windows server 2016, hybrid joined (because we use Azure AD SSO and windows 2019 doesnt give you the popup window to login), 6 cores, 32 GB RAM for each server and we had about 35 servers up and running just for this published app. We would average around 4-6 users per server to try and give them a good experience.
We use VMWare, have a cluster of 7 physical servers and have enough resources. Its hard explaining to the users that its not us. Axcess is just slow. Although the partner that forced the move to Axcess has said hes been using it for 15 years and it must be our network as its wasn't slow for him before he joined us. We did extensive tests in jan/feb and the one item that was slower was the print preview. Everything else like opening a return was maybe 1-2 seconds slower than having Axcess installed locally.
We think they will push for the software to be installed locally on everyones firm laptop. With so many folks still working remote, the issues we forsee happening is if they need some sort of access to our network (like a mapped drive or something). they would need to have it on their local drive now.
Has anyone else come across this? If so, what was your solution, if any?

2023.04.27 09:43 jeelshah24 What is the best tax planning software?

Choosing the best tax-filing software can be a difficult task, especially with so many options available in the market. Here are some factors to consider when selecting the best tax-filing software:
Cost: Look for software that fits within your budget. Some software may offer free filing options for simple returns, while others may charge a fee for more complex returns.

2023.04.22 15:36 WTFooteCPA Leave UltraTax for ProConnect or Lacerte?

After frustrating challenges with UT this season, and being told I can't continue my existing contract, I'm looking into options.
I currently have UT CS Express 100, but I have ~130 clients. CS100 includes 25 PTE and 75 1040s. I knew I'd go over the PTE limit, so I clarified with my sales rep I would pay PRP fees for any extra, before I signed. I assumed that meant it was also PRP after 75 1040s.
Well they haven't charged me any PRP fees, and told me I can't renew my CS Express contract now that I'm "over the limit."
They quoted me a "basic bundle" today for about $7,200 with unlimited Fed and three states. Or their "bundle offer" good through the end of April that costs $8,400 after PRP fees at my current volume, if l only do unlimited to "break even points." I've asked for clarification on pricing, and waiting to hear back.
I gave Intuit a call and got a quote of $4,340 for ProConnect for 140 clients, or $4,580 for Lacerte for 200. Supposedly PRP fees for any extras. They did not recommend ProSeries. Lacerte is a three year contract, up to 7% fee increase each year, and 10% early cancellation fee.
I don't expect I'll ever exceed 200 clients without a dramatic change to my practice structure anyway. Intuit's PRP fees are half (or less) of TR's. TR has separate fees for fed, state, and some local filings. Nearly my entire client base gets hit with three PRP fees as a result, some four. Intuit is just one fee that's less than TR's federal PRP charge.
One of the particular things I like about UT is the ability to auto-generate a separate "Action Required" PDF with instructions, 8879s, and payment vouchers. Breaks it down really well for clients. It's created as part of the final printing step of the tax return.
I occasionally use data mining in UT, but not significantly. I'm running a solo practice on a local install. So I don't need any fancy virtual office or network solutions.
I also pretty heavily rely on Planner CS throughout the year and would need something similar.
I use TD for my CRM, so I really only need a tax software that can file and produce decent PDFs.
Drake isn't an option, as they don't support Form OR-21 for Oregon, which I file for about every PTE. CCH products aren't an option either. I spent one hellish season working in Axcess Tax, hated it, and my soul died a little. Never again.
Would love to hear feedback from people who've worked in the various platforms. I primarily due straight-forward PTEs and some minor multi-state work. I last worked in Lacerte from 2011-2015 and didn't have significant issues with it. Interfacing with UT felt similar when I made that switch.

2023.04.19 23:11 dsm1324 “Custom” K-1 footnotes

Back when I worked for one of the “Big 5” firms, we always had to suppress the CCH Axcess generated 199A footnote and add the firm’s “custom” 199A footnote, which contained all the same exact info as what the Axcess footnote would have contained. But since the custom footnote isn’t software generated, every time a number changed in the return, we had to manually update the footnote. One of the most frustrating and pointless parts of the return prep. Any other firms do this? What’s the reason for it?

2023.04.19 13:14 venturecapely K-1 Software?

We specialize in PE/VC tax and therefore have partnerships with complicated allocations and K-1s. We use CCH Axcess and really struggle to get it to do what we want, but it’s my understanding that Axcess is the best product out there and is superior to GoSystems.
Can someone talk to me about the K-1 software used at B4, specifically at EY? I know it’s proprietary, but wondering how it works. Is it excel based? Does it just populate PDF K1s? How are statements and supporting schedules prepared? Wondering if there’s anything on the market we could purchase, or what kind of investment would it take to create our own.
We are the leading office in a large National firm.

2023.04.18 21:36 AdHistorical7107 How did everyone do this season?

I must say. I cut a few clients loose (either by pricing them out, or just downright terminating them) before the season started.
Some came back last minute, but was OK with the extension.
The implementation of taxdome was very helpful this year. It made gathering efile authorizations much easier, and being able to print the electronic withdrawal/deposit report to the authorizations helped eliminate those stupid questions about when funds will be pulled. Admittedly, I know there are so many more functions in taxdome that I can use.
CCH Axcess is just OK. I do wish I stayed with Proseries. I found it much more intuitive, and working with the several different states was much more easy. CCH Axcess I felt was very not intuitive. But at least it didn't crash on me this year.
I need to improve my billing. I have not billed for the past two weeks. I will be flush by end of the week as clients have been asking for invoices. I felt that was a spot where I can improve the most (the administrative side). As a sole practicioner, without admin staff, it was difficult when clients say "oops, forgot to tell you I moved last week" or "I need to change banking info if you are going to send money out."
I also need to improve workflow. Some clients slipped through by not "sealing" their organizer. This probably falls under the functionality of taxdome.
How about everyone else?

2023.04.17 17:47 Double-Star-Tedrick 35 year old intern with no clear goals / career direction

Hello, seeking advice.
My apologies if this isn't the correct sub for such a post.
I'll try to keep the background brief.
BACKGROUND
Got an art degree when I was young. Worked in low-wage food service, got depressed (figuratively, not clinically) on the cusp of 30, went back to school in order to make a change. Accounting was a natural feeling choice. A non-credit certificate at the local Community College ended up being a credit-cert, than an AAS, and now I'm slowly picking away at an entire second bachelors in Accounting, but I need to work to support myself, so even that is probably another two years from being done, most likely.

RIGHT NOW
At the moment I work full-time as an intern at a small (10 employees) public accounting firm, for a little over one year now, and the $20/hr they pay me is more than I've ever earned in my life, even periods where I had two jobs and was working like 60/hrs a week, it's kinda wild to me.
Thing is, though, I'm going to be 35 this year, and I seem to have hit a wall. Not only am I just tired of being in school (especially for the required classes that aren't Accounting), I can TELL (like ... I feel it right now, in my bones) that I'm not going to hack it in public, or in any sort of Tax work. And frankly, I also kinda don't wan't to, either ?
I'm spinning my wheels basically all day on stuff I don't really understand, and am not really interested in learning, either.
Call it laziness, or a lack of ambition, or whatever, but I just want to go to work for 45-50 hours and go home to spend time my family and friends, work out, enjoy hobbies ... boring stuff, and I've never been sure if I wanted to commit to being "a whole accountant", as I describe to my friends.
The sunk cost of being about 60% through a second bachelor's degree is my primary motivator on that front (and also I'm not sure I could weather having to tell the people in my life I dropped the idea, halfway through and thousands more dollars in debt, for it)

EDIT : "SO THIS INTERNSHIP..."
Someone asked, so, like I said, this is a small public accounting firm I'm at, myself (an intern), an office manager, and 8 other employees, 5 of whom I believe are CPA's, 2 of whom are the father / son owners who's names are on the door.
Personally, I just do the monthly bookkeeping for about 10 of their clients (a lot of data entry for the restaurants that write, like, hundreds of live checks a month), reconcile accounts, paying their sales tax, journal entries, sometimes preparing financials and making workpapers. I've been doing year-end stuff for the first time the last couple months, and have been dipping my toes into entering stuff into the tax software they use (CCH Prosystems FX Tax ?) to be filed by others.
Sometimes random other stuff, like setting up a new QB file, or getting someone registered with a state so they can pay unemployment on a new remote employee, "change this person's resident agent address", "review this audit information against the merchant sales reports", "identify people that might need a 1099", "go into this clients books (that does their own bookkeeping) and fix it, it's sloppy AF", etc.

THE FUTURE
Nobody in my life is familiar with the industry or could provide any meaningful guidance. I get the impression that for a typical Accounting student, graduating in their early twenties, there's a clear career trajectory they're kind of expected to follow, but that's probably not an appropriate measure at this point in my life.
small clarity edit : I think it'd be ridiculous to stop the bachelor's degree at this point, but it's like ... what then? Study for the CPA even tho it's unclear if I'd really be interested in CPA-level work? Be an AAP person forever? I've never had a clear end goal, and I think that's part of why it's hard to stay as motivated to kinda grinding myself now, as it was back when I started the idea in 2018.
TL;DR, this is an attempt at accurate self-assessment and not just self deprecation, but I think I lack the aptitude / motivation to go much further than I am, in accounting knowledge, and I wanna just settle somewhere and get to do the other parts of life, but have no idea how to pivot towards something that'd be both appropriate and reasonably attainable, any advice appreciated.
EDIT 2 : RESPONSE
Thank you all for your thoughtful words, and advice. I will absolutely aim to finish the bachelor's and seek a Staff position in Industry, and perhaps reassess the possibility of seeking CPA certification, later. It really helps me to hear it come from folks that already work in Accounting - I've been in such an imposter syndrome spiral, these last few tax season weeks, feeling tired and foolish ... ... my thoughts feel much more grounded, now. Thank you!

2023.04.16 17:01 rosesarepeonies Anyone Have Any Experience with CCH Axcess API?

Has anyone had any experience using CCH Axcess API? I know a little bit of basic VBA but I don't have any major programming experience. If you've been in a similar position and have used the API, what sort of support materials did CCH offer to help you get started?
