WhatsApp is a versatile messaging platform that offers a multitude of features designed to simplify communication and connect people around the globe. Whether you're an Android or iOS user, WhatsApp provides a user-friendly interface that allows you to send messages, make calls, share media, and even conduct business seamlessly. By leveraging the tips and tricks shared in this article, you'll be able to navigate WhatsApp like a pro in no time.

Customize Your WhatsApp Profile

Your WhatsApp profile is your digital identity, and it's essential to make it reflect your personality. Start by selecting a profile picture that represents you best. To do this, open WhatsApp settings, tap on your profile, and select a picture from your gallery or take a new one. Don't forget to choose a captivating and meaningful status message that can express your current mood or share something unique about yourself.

Mastering WhatsApp Chats

Sending Messages
When it comes to sending messages on WhatsApp, you have various options to explore. Apart from the traditional text messages, you can send voice messages by holding down the microphone icon. This feature is especially handy when you're on the go or find it easier to communicate verbally.
Formatting Text
To add emphasis or structure to your messages, you can use formatting options in WhatsApp. By enclosing your text with asterisks (bold), underscores (italics), or tildes (strikethrough), you can enhance your messages and make them visually appealing.
Using Emoji
Emojis add a touch of emotion and fun to your conversations. WhatsApp offers a wide range of emojis that you can easily access by tapping the smiley face icon in the chat input field. Express yourself and make your chats more lively and engaging.
Creating Groups
WhatsApp groups enable you to connect and interact with multiple people simultaneously. You can create a group by going to the Chats tab, tapping the "New Group" option, and selecting the contacts you want to add. Give your group a catchy name and enjoy seamless communication with your friends, family, or colleagues.
Voice and Video Calls
WhatsApp allows you to make both voice and video calls to your contacts. Simply open a chat, tap the phone or camera icon at the top right corner, and choose whether you want to make a voice call or initiate a video call. Stay connected and have real-time conversations, no matter the distance.

Exploring WhatsApp Features

3.1 Status Updates
WhatsApp's status feature enables you to share photos, videos, or text updates with your contacts that disappear after 24 hours. Spice up your status by adding filters, captions, or even emojis. This feature is perfect for sharing memorable moments or capturing your daily adventures.
WhatsApp Web
WhatsApp Web allows you to access your WhatsApp account from your computer. By scanning a QR code with your phone, you can sync your chats and conversations, making it convenient to continue your conversations while working on a larger screen.
Broadcast Lists
If you need to send the same message to multiple people without creating a group, WhatsApp's broadcast lists come in handy. Create a broadcast list by going to the Chats tab, tapping on the three dots menu, and selecting "New Broadcast." Add the desired contacts, compose your message, and hit send. This way, you can save time and effort by avoiding repetitive individual messages.
Archiving Chats
To keep your chat list organized, you can archive chats that are less active or no longer relevant. Simply swipe left on the chat you want to archive and tap the archive button. Archived chats will be moved to a separate folder, allowing you to declutter your main chat screen while still having access to those conversations whenever needed.

WhatsApp tips and tricks: Privacy and Security

Two-Step Verification

Protecting your WhatsApp account is crucial, and enabling two-step verification adds an extra layer of security. Go to WhatsApp settings, select "Account," then "Two-step verification" to set it up. By creating a six-digit PIN, you ensure that even if someone gets hold of your SIM card, they won't be able to access your WhatsApp without the PIN.
Controlling Privacy Settings
WhatsApp provides granular control over your privacy settings. You can choose who sees your profile picture, status updates, last seen timestamp, and more. To adjust these settings, navigate to "Account" in WhatsApp settings and select "Privacy." Customize your privacy settings according to your preferences and enjoy a secure and private chatting experience.

Additional Tips and Tricks

Backing Up Chats
It's important to back up your WhatsApp chats regularly to prevent any data loss. You can back up your chats to your device's local storage or even to cloud storage services like Google Drive or iCloud. In WhatsApp settings, go to "Chats" and select "Chat Backup" to configure your backup preferences and ensure your conversations are safe and recoverable.
Muting Conversations
If you find yourself in a group or individual chat that's too active or noisy, you can mute notifications for that specific conversation. Simply open the chat, tap on the contact or group name at the top, and select "Mute notifications." Choose the desired duration, and you'll no longer be bothered by constant notifications, allowing you to focus on what matters most.
Using WhatsApp Payments
WhatsApp offers a secure and convenient way to send and receive money through its Payments feature. Link your bank account, set up a UPI PIN, and you're ready to make payments to your contacts or even businesses. Simply open a chat, tap on the attachment icon, and select "Payment" to send money hassle-free.

“US leaders gamble with the worlds most trusted asset” . . . and lose ???

U.S. leaders gamble with world’s most trusted asset in debt showdown (msn.com)
There's so much wrong with this headline (see link above) I don't know where to begin.
First of all, our current leaders (Biden and McCarthy?) are hardly the ones who created this mess. Nor are they the clowns that any sane person would pick to fix it. The $31.4 trillion national debt ($250,000 per taxpayer) has been building for eons. Let's concede that 2021 and 2022 did see some of the most absurd government spending ever. If America's financial reputation is, indeed, “our most important asset”, why even trust it some random president and congress who happen to get elected in an even numbered year?
Wait – we don't do that? We don't have our money controlled by them? Then now DOES it work?
The US financial system is managed by UNELECTED bureaucrats. Not politicians who we can hold accountable on election day. This would explain so much. Except how we now owe $250,000 each in federal debt. Here's my theory on how we got here.
The Federal Reserve Chairman is appointed. From a crew of Fed governors, who themselves are appointed. To 14 year terms, in odd numbered years. This is supposed to appear bipartisan. But does zero to ensure competence. One of the Federal Reserve governors succeeded in driving his own bank into insolvency this year. This should serve as a wakeup call, eh?
The FDIC Chairman is appointed to a 5 year term. Again, because he wears a non-partisan uniform. His job is to use FDIC money (actually, our money) to bail out banks which fall into a hole and die. His job is also to send in examiners to detect and end risky practices, to prevent banks from falling into a hole and dying in the first place. Well, THAT'S been going really well, hasn't it?
The Secretary of the Treasury – this year our Treasury Secretary is 77 year old Janet Yellen. Nominated by the more mature President Biden. Some people would say “give her a break, she's a woman and she's new at this – only been on the job for 2 years”. Think again – Janet first began working at the Federal Reserve over 50 years ago. Been there at least four times. In between she's variously been: a Harvard professor; chair of the Council of Economic Advisors; a professor at University of California Berkeley; a Brookings Institution think tank expert . . . If you want to find someone's fingerprints on this financial mess, Janet's are everywhere, going back 50 years. Her signature is also on every dollar bill in your wallet.
The Comptroller of the Currency – flies under everyone's radar. Can you even name him? (Michael Hsu.) His direct supervisor is Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. But she has almost no power over him. The Comptroller is nominated by the president – ALSO for a 5 year term - to appear non-partisan. But that doesn't necessarily mean that he's in cahoots with those 5 year FDIC guys. Even though his job sounds similar: “to investigate misconduct committed by institution-affiliated parties of national banks, including officers, directors, employees, . . . “
Okay – those 4 appointees should be enough to get the job done, right? But wait, there's a bunch MORE federal agencies with their fingers in the money pie. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau – created after the 2008 banking system meltdown. The Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council. A special regulator for Credit Unions, and another for mortgage lenders. The Securities and Exchange Commission; the Congressional Budget Office. The Government Accountability Office (aka Government Accounting Office); the Council of Economic Advisors; the Office of Management and Budget; the Office of Economic Policy; the Financial Stability Oversight Council. Not to be confused with the similarly named “Office of Financial Stability” . . . and 50 state banking regulators too, of course.
If you concluded that responsibility for this mess is spread so thin as to be almost nonexistent - you get a gold star. Quick . . who would you actually blame any specific thing? None of these appointed geeks actually does anything other than preside over staff spending money that doesn't even belong to them. Of course, that's how we ended up in debt over our eyeballs. And these guys are all saying “no problemo – just raise the spending limit so I can get back to work and stop answering your annoying questions”. (Janet Yellen, I'm looking at you). I just made that quote up. But that's the vibe coming out of the White House, the Treasury Department, the Federal Reserve, the FDIC, and congress, isn't it?
Actual leaders - in a democracy - are accountable to voters. The appointed bureaucrats aren't. And the few people who ARE elected to their jobs (the president, leaders of the senate and house) probably can't balance their own checkbooks. Biden isn't even allowed to drive, or go to the bathroom by himself these days.
We now have the highest interest rates in a generation. The highest inflation rate too. Record spending on everything imaginable – defense, welfare, education, healthcare, infrastructure, social security, spotted owls . . . and we still have homeless camps 2 miles long.
Yesterday a deal was reached to increase the national debt – and government spending. Hooray - we are saved!
“Ask everybody who ain't asleep to stand right up and yell . . .” \*
\ lyrics to “Hey Porter”, the first song written by Johnny Cash (1954). Ry Cooder's cover of this song may be more compelling than Cash's original version though.*

2023.05.28 14:39 everlasting_spes Country not available (aplaybox)

I was trying to make an account to download stages from aplaybox, but my country is not in the drop-down menu. I haven't found those creators on other social media, so is there any other hub they might be at that we can download from?
I'd like to follow those creators and more, but I haven't found many on DeviantArt and aplaybox doesn't have my country as an option. (I've seen screenshots on DA from those same stages, but they all lead back to aplaybox which requires an account it won't let me make). I've seen advice to spoof numbers but I don't want to break site rules or make trouble for anyone.

2023.05.28 14:08 No_Eight Lifestyle of the Zonowōdjon

Lifestyle of the Zonowōdjon
She held her breath as the clinker nosed onto the island. It was barely more than the size of two houses, covered in tall grass and reeds, but she hadn’t set sights on it for its size. It was hard to tell, so far from the coast, but it did not appear to have the sloping beach of a sandbar island, and even seemed to drift gently with the wind, as would their ship if the oars were docked. If she was right, this was one of the wandering islands.
Her grandmother had told stories to all the children of the village, of her own time on fishing voyages aboard the longboats, and of finding a wandering island herself. Assembled through the will of a powerful spirit, wandering islands were as much life as land, imparting some of the lost vigor of the first generation unto the soil and allowing it to again wander the lakes.
To weather the night here may not seem practical, small as the wandering islands typically are. But the spirits of these islands are kindly if offered due respect, and always protect those who sleep on their backs. And to return to the village with such a story… when she too became an elder, she could regale the next generation with her own story, not just the one she carried from her grandmother.
She teased the land with one foot, and finding it solid hauled herself over the strake and onto the land. It bobbed slightly as it took her weight, and she felt her heart soar as the remaining crew disembarked behind her. As some of their number began fetching the poles and reed mats that would make their lean-tos for the coming night, she watched one of the oarsmen reverently offer a prayer to the ship-shrine, before taking a pinch of sacred ash from the urn within. He took slow, measured steps to the center of the island, before beginning his observances to the spirit who would watch over them that night.
She almost wished she could help, but this was his role, and a spirit prefers to commune with only one regardless. He scattered the ash into the grass of the island as he shook a small chime, two strings of small shells tied on both ends to a T-shaped stick, and filled the quiet air with a gentle percussion. She could not hear his prayers; they were silent after all. But she could witness his devotion in his bearing, and imagine the honor he felt at getting this chance.
It felt strange to see the wild shrine rituals without a shrine, or even an urn, but in truth it would be impossible to erect a shrine here. The proper observances could not be carried out should the island drift and never again be found. To build a shrine, a promise to a spirit that could not be kept, would be a cruelty that the village would not be forgiven for. Perhaps they would instead leave some of the reeds they carried, shredding their mats the same way old thatch is returned to rot in the marshes, for even a spirit powerful enough to set an island adrift must respect the cycle of death and rebirth, and could make use of their gift.
But for this night, they and the spirit would share a kinship, and they would depart on the morrow with a story and a blessing.

The Zonowōdjon

Claim Map
The Zonowōdjon (families of the lake, originally from family.lake-ɢᴇɴ), also known to call themselves simply the Wōdjon, live in the coastal forests and shallow hills along the shores of the southern Titonean lakes. They comprise a collection of small villages, most constructed within reach of waterways with access to the lakes, if not on their very shore. More than anything, the Zonowōdjon are united by their animistic practices and sense of shared identity through language, as well as their predisposition to fishing and wetlands forage over the paddy agriculture predominant elsewhere in Tritonea.

Subsistence, Industry, and Lifestyle

Agriculture practiced by Zonowōdjon is more akin to horticulture. Long domesticated crops of the region such as zizania have made their way into Zonowōdjon hands, but large dedicated irrigation systems are largely not in use. Opportunistic replanting of common forage goods is frequent, typically in gardens just outside the circle of houses. While a fair amount of village labor is tied up in the planting and tending of these gardens, they do not provide a majority of Zonowōdjon caloric intake. Rather, the quantities of vegetable matter their relatively small population sizes demand are served well by a mixture of forage and horticulture, the former seeing many villages built within reach of the freshwater marshes where their most harvested good, cattail, is found.
Cattail is employed for a variety of purposes, both culinary and industrial. Young shoots and narrow leaves are consumed as vegetables, while the root is harvested seasonally, dried, and processed into flour. Tubers found in the root system are also consumed as a vegetable, as are the immature flower spikes. The bast fiber of the stem is processed for use in textiles, as are the leaf fibers, though the former are more productive and make up a greater share of Zonowōdjon textile goods. Lastly, the stems are harvested whole for the production of wicker, thatch roofing, and reed boats.
Beyond cattail, Lotus is commonly foraged for use as a vegetable, particularly its root. Nuts, fruits, and herbs also comprise a major element of Zonowōdjon food culture, though many are sourced exclusively from forage. Wild alliums are the most prevalent aromatic the Zonowōdjon harvest, while cranberries are one or the more prevalent fruits, used both fresh and dried in cooking. Hemp, both foraged and gardened, serves as a secondary source of textile fiber, and its seeds are heavily employed in cooking. Oil is pressed from seeds and nuts, with pecan being the most common source, but is not produced in great quantities by the Zonowōdjon themselves, and some oil comes by trade with their more agriculturally developed neighbors. Lastly, mushrooming is a major tradition among Zonowōdjon, comprising a significant portion of their diet during seasons when mushroom forage is plentiful.

Fishing

The true backbone of Zonowōdjon subsistence is fishing. Fish, shellfish, and crustaceans are caught through a mixture of open-water net fishing, sunken basket traps, river and stream weirs, and manual forage for shellfish in shallower waters. Crayfish are one of the most common catches in the basket traps and are prized more as a delicacy than a staple food, while larger fish from open-water fishing comprise the bulk of seafood by weight, and enable villages closer to the lake shore to grow larger, and their descendants to found new villages more frequently. Both canoes and wading fishers deploy seine nets and cast nets.
The development of more sophisticated nets, the need for more hands to operate them, and the weight of increased hauls have all driven the development of Zonowōdjon shipbuilding significantly. While traditional reed boats and birchbark canoes are still frequently employed, particularly in rivers and streams and for more coastal operations, open water fishing trips make use of larger and far more sophisticated sewn-plank longboats with proper oar locks. Even large villages may only have one or several such boats, and their construction and maintenance is a significant expenditure of labor and point of clan pride. Crews on these boats often leave their village for days at a time, camping on small islands or distant shores. The reed-mats used to construct their temporary lean-tos are carried on the ship itself, chosen for their low weight. These larger longboats typically manage drop nets, though they may also be used to deploy seine nets with the aid of smaller outriding canoes, as the longboats are better able to transport a large catch.

Cuisine

Zonowōdjon cuisine centers zizania, cattail flour, and fish as staples. A common preparation of fish involves slicing the fish crosswise and stewing in an aromatic and seasoned stock. Both the flavorful broth and the flesh of the fish are fully consumed, with the aid of a lumpy flatbread produced from cattail flour. A flat stone atop a stone tripod, constructed above a fire, is the main method for production of flatbreads. Fish may also be dry roasted whole or sliced, with seeds and herbs pressed into the flesh if it has been sliced first. When catches are in excess of what can be consumed, which is common for coastal villages with longboats, fish will be smoke-cured for preservation and hung in a store hut. Smoke cured fish may still be cooked in a broth as above, or eaten as is. Regardless, at family meals it is common for older family members to pick the flesh of the fish from the bone after cooking is done, and distribute it to those younger than them. Another common dish is zizania pilaf, cooked in a thinner stock than fish. This dish often includes dried fruits, nuts, root and vegetables, and sometimes smaller seafood like shellfish and crayfish, with what is included owing more to seasonality and availability of forage than strict recipe. One more dish of note is a vegetable fritter, formed with shredded leaf and vegetable matter, mixed thoroughly with cattail flour, water, and seasonings before being fried. As oil production is marginal in many Zonowōdjon villages, this forms a less frequent component of the diet, but as a result holds a certain prestige. Ceremonies such as weddings, feasts when hosting representatives of other villages, and spiritual observances and festivals are more likely to see production of fritters. Notably, a vegetable fritter is a common burnt offering at shrines due to its status as a festival food.

Architecture

Villages are typically constructed of permanent dwellings. All buildings are single-storey, and roofed with cattail thatch. Most buildings are single room, and constructed of wattle-and-daub between upright wooden posts, though additional standing posts may support the roof in a longhouse. The clan patriarch lives in a longhouse, which may also be used as a storehouse and hold clan shrines. Cookstoves and fires are typically built outside during fair seasons, shielded by low reed mat walls and thatch lean-tos, though they are often moved to interior firepits during cold weather. Flooring is predominantly woven reed mats, which are easily pulled back to expose bare soil should a fire be constructed inside. Some homes feature bunk beds constructed flush with the wall.
A village never contains more than three clans, and most frequently consist of only one. Houses are generally communal sleeping spaces, so many villages contain few buildings, and some may be devoted entirely to stores. Houses are generally arrayed so that all doors face the center, which is a beaten earth area free of plants and used for celebrations and ceremonies, as well as being used daily for the practice of industry such as processing cattail and weaving. Doing daily labor indoors is frowned upon during fair weather.

Tools

The Zonowōdjon make use of knapped stone and jade tools, reed wicker baskets, hemp or cattail-fiber sacks and ropes, and primarily burn wood for fire. Western obsidian infrequently permeates Tritonia through trade, so many villages are able to make use of obsidian knives, and some use obsidian in jewelry as well. Shells and bone feature prominently in jewelry and ornamentation, and shells are also the primary material used for shrine chimes. Wood carvings are frequently used for ornamentation, particularly on shrines, and those chimes which are not shell are often carved wood. Wooden chimes that can create clear ringing tones are particularly prized, and make auspicious gifts to other villages. Stone-tipped spears are the most common weapons wielded by Zonowōdjon villagers, though clubs with a flat wooden handle and a setting of a fist-sized smooth stone are also common. Obsidian is rarely used in weaponry.

Spirituality and Mythology

The Father Moon is seen as the shepherd of souls and the patron of reincarnation. He is also the father of men and fish, and fish scales are said to shimmer like moonlight on the surface of water because of his blessing within them. Moonbeams contain souls of the deceased returning to the world both as spirits and to enter new flesh, and the Father Moon travels to the edge of the world every night to collect those souls that have traveled the dark rivers beneath the earth to reach him.
The Mother Sun is seen as the patron of flowers and plants, particularly the cattail. Filled with both warmth and rage, she begat the first life in the world, but cares little for the cycle of souls overseen by the Father Moon after the two generations she directly birthed died or otherwise left the lakes.
T’sawayda is a psychopomp and the mythological ancestor of the Zonowōdjon. They are depicted both as a giant man and an enormous fish, or with elements of both such as the head of a pike on the torso of a man. They are a member of the Zonowōdjon third gender, leaning to masculine expression, and are a member of the second generation of life. They are seen as the first of the second generation to climb from land to shore, and thus their descendents are all the Zonowōdjon. T’sawayda urged all their descendents to reap the Mother Sun’s bounty on land, but stay close to the shore to partake of the Father Moon’s bounty. T’sawayda is said to now make their home in the depths of the lake, with one door of their longhouse opening to the waters of the lake, and another to the bank of the dark rivers beneath the world. They find and guide lost souls, such as Zonowōdjon who die on the water and risk becoming demons, freeing them from their flesh and offering them hospitality before sending them on their voyage to reunite with the Father Moon.
Zonowōdjon believe the world is full of spirits, souls without constraining flesh who embody much of the natural world or protect those within it. There are believed to be local spirits both of locations, such as hills, marshes, and groves, as well as spirits to things within, such as the spirit of fish in a given marsh, or the spirit of a particularly ancient tree. Further, all villages and even most permanent buildings have venerated tutelary spirits.

Shrines

The core of Zonowōdjon spiritual practice is composed of maintaining shrines and holding public festivals. Shrines are dedicated to a local or tutelary spirit, with the latter also often seen as an ancestral spirit from a member of the clan in that village. For those spirits within buildings, a shrine is a simple as a clay urn which bears a pictorial representation of the spirit, into which offerings are placed. For spirits of larger areas, a shrine is constructed, usually from wood, either sewn or assembled through joinery. These shrines contain the urn which venerates the spirit proper. Most shrine urns feature a lid, often a wicker lid which is replaced annually during the vernal festival observances. Shell chimes are often hung from the roof of freestanding shrines, should there be enough clearance, or from poles erected around the shrine or the boughs of nearby trees. Similar chimes are held and shaken by shrine tenders during their observances, whether or not a shrine itself bears standing chimes.
Spirit urns often contain permanent offerings, with obsidian, bone, shell, and jade beads being common. Beads may initially be on a string, but the burning of offerings often leaves the beads free within the ash. During festivals and days of spiritual observance, offerings of food are placed within the urn. Offerings in distant shrines may be permitted to rot, but typically the offering is burned before being placed within the urn. Should an urn break, the shrine tender is expected to go into a period of grief and observance, and produce a replacement urn before interring the shards at the base of the shrine. Beads and other permanent offerings are transferred.
With the small population of most villages, a single man may be expected to tend multiple shrines, but the most important shrines may have a single tender. The clan patriarch is seen as symbolically responsible for the shrine to their clan’s guardian spirit, and the patriarch leading an entire village for the village spirit’s shrine as well.
Clinkers, the prized sewn-plank boats used for open-water fishing trips, hold a similar importance to homes, and thus contain a shrine. Typically the shrine is a small cavity constructed in the prow of the ship, containing a spirit urn. It is commonly believed that new ships are guarded by the returning spirit of an ancestor, so placing family ash or even bone shards within the shrine urn is often part of dedicating a new clinker.
Souls are believed to descend to the world starting on the full moon, so dedications of new homes and boats are usually practiced on the night of the full moon, that the soul of an ancestor might find the shrine and become a guardian for the new structure.

Creation

All the world was one lake, stretching to the ends of the world, and no souls lived within it. Thus, the Mother Sun and the Father Moon came together to cast the first life to the earth. The first life was enormous, and as it died, the massive corpses divided the world into smaller lakes. The Mother Sun was grieved, but tried again. The next generation was composed of smaller beings, but the world was still unable to bear their weight. Most voluntarily climbed to the sky, becoming stars, though some today choose to return to a world that is too small for them, creating disasters that terrorize the third generation. The third generation was the last attempt, and still lives upon the world, birthed by the giants of the second generation before their exodus, but blessed with life by the sky. After so many generations, the seed of the Father Moon was spent, and he went dark for the first time. It is only when many of the third generation died their first death and returned to the edge of the world that the Father Moon gathered them back to himself, and once again began to shine. Thus, the Father Moon became a shepherd of souls, gaining and losing his light as the cycles of death and rebirth flow.

The Afterlife & Funerary Practice

The Zonowōdjon do not believe in an afterlife as such, but rather in the eventual return of souls, though some may claim the dark rivers of the underworld amount to some form of hell or purgatory. The Zonowōdjon believe that the soul resides in the bones, and is constrained by the flesh. The soul must sink into the Earth to travel the great rivers under the Earth to its edge, where it will be gently collected by the Moon after a long, dark voyage. Souls embraced by the moon are returned to the lakes in the form of gentle moonbeams, souls ready to find new life. Souls of animals likewise find themselves returned to the lakes by the Moon. A soul may become the new guardian spirit of a home or village, or find itself embodied in a new human life. Those souls who return as tutelary spirits are particularly venerated, and it is believed that important ancestors return to protect the homes, boats, and villages of their descendants. Conversely, a soul lost in the dark rivers who never returns to the moon may find itself twisted by the dark, and eventually claw its way up through the lakebeds as a demon. Demons may also spawn from a soul trapped in the darkness of its own dead flesh, a fate seen as especially common for those lost to the waters of the lake. Thus, prayers for the deliverance of the missing to the Father Moon are common.
By far the most common funeral practice is cremation, as it is believed the soul cannot be liberated while flesh still encases bone. After a cremation, bones often remain. Many villages maintain ossuaries composed of shallow earthen mounds beyond the circle of homes in which bones are interred, sometimes alongside carvings, clothing, or even jewelry. Smaller villages without ossuary mounds have simpler burial grounds further outside of the village, with skulls alone being instead interred at the foundation of family dwellings. In both cases, carvings may be made on the forehead of an intact skull before burial, and a shrine urn decorated to match, in hopes that the soul of the deceased will return to grace the village as a tutelary spirit. Some ash from every burial is placed in the spirit urn of a family home, some in the village longhouse, and often distributed to important shrines of the region surrounding the village, with the latter being obligatory for those who served a particular spirit. Remaining ash is stored in a communal family urn, and on the construction of new homes, some ash from this urn is ritually placed in a small pot or basket which is buried at the foundation to consecrate the ground, and allow the descending spirits of ancestors to find and protect the site.

Culture and Gender

Zonowōdjon clan names are matrilineal, but the ruling structure of clans and villages is more patriarchal, with each clan having a patriarch who serves as both the face of the clan, and the arbiter of important decisions. However, there is a strong cultural importance put on the opinions of elderly women, who hold a similar social importance to clan patriarchs as the retainers of oral history. They wield de facto authority in villages, especially those containing multiple clans. Most villages contain 1-3 clans, with one clan’s patriarch holding primary authority, extending from their role as the face of the village when meeting with outsiders or people from other villages.
Gender roles are not particularly strict among younger individuals, especially the unmarried, with only clan patriarchs and village elders taking on especially gendered roles. Both men and women participate in fishing and forage, as well as cooking and food processing and preservation. Older women tend to perform most weaving, as it is a position of some prestige that does not require them to leave the village. A major exception is during mushrooming seasons, when elderly women are trusted to identify safe forage, and often leave the village alongside the typical younger foragers. The main gender differences observed are that it is seen as a more womanly role to plant and tend a garden, while it is seen as a more manly role to perform observances and burn offerings at a shrine (though at major ceremonies, it is still elderly woman who recount myths and tales for those in attendance, while a man performs the actual shrine observances).
Zonowōdjon culture also observes a third gender, though it is mutable and can express as leaning to either male or female gendered expression based on the individual. The Zonowōdjon believe the third gender to be an expression of the returned soul of another life in a differently sexed body. Visibly intersex children are always identified as belonging to this gender, but individuals who are not visibly intersex may also find themselves identified through other means. Commonly, showing early aptitude with reading the stars is seen as a sign that a child is of the third gender, as is a child showing both interest and aptitude in the weaving usually practiced by elderly woman. Regardless of birth sex, members of the third gender identified in this way tend to lean to some feminine aspects and gain some of the prestige granted elderly women, while those identified by their intersex characteristics tend to lean masculine. Members of this third gender are respected, but not particularly venerated. A member of the third gender can be a shrine tender, just as a man might, and participate in any labor, but are usually seen as beyond the institution of marriage and thus live their lives unmarried.

Festivals

There are several seasonal festivals observed by the Zonowōdjon, though precise timing varies heavily from village to village, with each usually choosing a phase of the moon, timed from the start of a season, to begin and end observances. Most festivals are multi-day affairs, With each day being dedicated to the observance of one particular god or heroic ancestor. Typically only one day features a full feast, and while spiritual observance happen on every day, the last day of a festival week usually sees a large communal observance. For multiple festivals, the decoration of the village is an important observance. Slender cloth drapes hung from the roofs of buildings and the boughs of trees mark the largest vernal festival, while wreaths of zizania stalks and cattail reeds hung on walls and poles mark the autumnal zizania festival. Some festivals call for decorations to be placed on poles erected in the common areas. While for some villages these poles are a temporary fixture, in other towns they remain year-round, but only feature their festival decorations during the week of observance and otherwise remain bare.
A major feature of several festivals, including the zizania festival in autumn, is circumambulation around a temporary shrine or ritual fetish constructed in a village center. Though circumambulation is practiced elsewhere in Zonowōdjon spirituality, here it persists for as long as two hours, described as beginning as the sun sets and ending when the moon is fully ascended to the sky.In addition to festivals, many clans have other non-festival observances. It is a common practice for most families to forgo the eating of fish on the new moon, and to fast during the daylight hours of both half-moons.

2023.05.28 14:00 Candid_Judgment Why water in Switzerland cost more than a Espresso or a beer?

Usually i go to the restaurant or when i'm in vacation and everytime i watch the menu i see this "no-sense". How is possible that the beer is cheaper than water(sometimes i saw 7 chf for 1 L of water and 5 chf for 0.33 of beer)? There is a cultural or social thing about that?

2023.05.28 12:34 Browncrypto217 What is a vanity cryptocurrency wallet address and what are the benefits of using it?

A vanity cryptocurrency wallet address is a custom cryptocurrency address that is created specifically to include certain desired letters and numbers. Rather than a randomly generated string, Vanity Hearts addresses allow users to have a more personalized and recognizable wallet address. Let's start by sharing a website that enables this feature, it enables TRX and ETH wallet address customization add whatever you want to your own wallet address.
https://www.customaddress.org/eth_en/
https://www.customaddress.org/trx_en/
The benefits of using a vanity cryptocurrency wallet address include
Personalization: Vanity addresses allow users to incorporate their name, brand, or any other desired text into their wallet address. This can make it easier for others to identify and remember their address.
Let's say an individual named John wants to create a Bitcoin wallet address that includes his name. Instead of a randomly generated address like "1Bn6hd7Ks94G2aWfWj8P3zXr...", John can create a vanity address like "1JohnSmith...". This personalization allows John to have a wallet address that is associated with his name, making it easier for friends, family, or business contacts to identify his wallet.
Branding: For businesses or individuals looking to promote their brand or program, a vanity address can help create a more professional and recognizable image. It can be used to receive payments or donations, making it easier for supporters to identify the wallet associated with the brand.
For example,A company called XYZ Corp. wants to create a vanity Ethereum wallet address for receiving payments related to their blockchain project. They can create a vanity address like "0xXYZCorp..." or "0xXYZProject...". By incorporating their brand name or project title into the wallet address, XYZ Corp. can strengthen their brand identity and make it easier for users and supporters to recognize and trust the address associated with their project.
Please give some examples after the 5 paragraphs of the strengths section. You can be more detailed
Ease of remembering: Vanity addresses can be designed to include memorable graphics or text, making it easier for users to remember and share their wallet address with others. This may be particularly useful for individuals who receive frequent cryptocurrency payments.
Consider an artist named Lisa who frequently receives cryptocurrency payments for her artwork. Instead of a random Ethereum address like "0x7AdE324cB23...," Lisa creates a vanity address like "0xArtByLisa...". This address is easier for Lisa to remember, and she can confidently share it with her clients, making it more convenient for them to send payments for her artwork.
Marketing and Promotion: Reputation addresses can be used as a marketing tool, especially during cryptocurrency-related events or promotions. They can help generate interest and draw attention to a project or cause.
For example,A charitable organization called Green Earth Foundation is running a fundraising campaign for environmental conservation. To promote the campaign, they create a vanity Bitcoin Cash address like "1SaveThePlanet...". They use this address in their promotional materials, social media campaigns, and events. The vanity address serves as a marketing tool, capturing attention and reinforcing their cause, making it more likely for people to donate to their campaign.
Aesthetics: Some users simply like to have a visually appealing wallet address. A vanity address can be designed to include specific characters or patterns that are visually pleasing. Some users simply prefer having visually appealing wallet addresses.
For example, a cryptocurrency enthusiast may create a vanity Litecoin address like "LTCMoonShot...". By incorporating the word "MoonShot," which represents high potential or exponential growth, the user can have an aesthetically pleasing address that reflects their optimism and enthusiasm for the cryptocurrency's future.
It is worth noting that while vanity addresses offer these benefits, the security of a cryptocurrency wallet depends heavily on the underlying cryptographic algorithm and the appropriate security practices employed by the user. Therefore, whenever possible, use sites that have been proven to work for these features.https://www.customaddress.org/eth_en/

2023.05.28 12:02 jemelat Thoughts about the DLC, map editor and the thing that annoys me the most on this game

This was going to be a comment but I figured we could have a nice discussion instead. Disclaimer: I'm not shitting on the game, I know about the "it's a small team" thing. I want to give some suggestions, specially regarding the map editor which I consider it to be the most important part of this game.
The bad:
I think the campaign is too easy combat-wise so far. After getting some legendary weapons, even my fighter is demolishing enemies. I think an increase on enemies numbers, deadlier spells and hazards is actually better to balance difficulty than just the flat increase on HP and stats that the difficulty settings brings. Although this time the writing is better than the jungle DLC, it is still a bit underwhelming. This is also because of a problem with the core social/rpg mechanics, where you have some extremely limited dialogue options that don't even tell you exactly what your character is gonna say (like the fallout 4 dialogue wheel) and it works more like a way of advancing the storyline instead of giving you actual dialogue choices. While playing the DLC, I noticed a pattern of the game forcing me to run through 3 uninteresting dialogue choices every time I needed to advance the story, and this made me just want to go kill things instead of reading it all because it felt like a chore. They improved the HUD slightly at least, but it would be great to have a dialogue box like the one from fallout new Vegas instead (although this would conflict with the concept of party members saying different things but I think that's a flawed concept since they seem to just say random shit and act out of character). I never really felt like I'm roleplaying when playing this game, cause I never get to actually choose what I want to say. Also, I don't know if it's the combination of me reading everything really fast + not finding the story that intriguing, but I also find the storyline really confusing. Half of the time I have no idea who I'm talking to and then my character is like "oh, you're Stryklhdklken the wise!". The way the inventory and notes/books work is also an obstacle to actually experiencing the game's lore. The inventory is so unorganized that it is a pain to find the right book, so I don't really read them because I don't want to deal with that mess.
The good:
The new scenarios are stunning and have lots of verticality. You can really see how the map design improved in regard to the previous dlc. The new scenarios are also very beautiful, that garden with the rude dwarf comes to mind. The new weapons and spells are great additions, I can already picture them being used on the custom campaigns. Some technical issues were greatly alleviated like the turns taking forever (and some "certain" broken spells that could incapacitate every enemy ad infinitum were fixed).
About the map editor:
Eventually the devs will move away from this game, and it will be left to survive on custom campaigns. It will only last with solid foundations, and we currently don't have any other game that uses DND ruleset and has a good map editor such as Solasta afaik. I would suggest the following as to prolong the life of the game for as long as possible:
I select my rogue and order him to click on a locked chest. When I click there, a popup appears on my screen with a picture of a chest (added externally by the modder) and the following text:
"You see a wooden chest. It seems to be in great condition and had a sturdy lock".
And then there's some options below this text:
"1. Open the chest 2. Check for traps (CD 21) 3. Try to break the chest (CD 25)"
I think this would ramp the roleplaying aspect by 1000%, it's really boring rn to just click on something, see the dice rolling and the message "you failed". It makes so that there's no roleplay or choice at all.
Anyway, this is getting really big. Let me know what you guys think.

2023.05.28 10:13 marvinsands Chatbot writes me a pit bull lobby story à la Jean-Luc Picard

I asked Bing's AI Chatbot to do this: "Can you write a page about the pit bull lobby in the style of Jean-Luc Picard?" And this is what it came up with.
The Pit Bull Lobby: A Threat to Public Safety By Jean-Luc Picard
Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before.
But not all life forms are friendly. Some are dangerous, aggressive and unpredictable. Some have been bred for centuries to fight and kill. Some have a powerful lobby that protects them from any regulation or accountability.
I am talking about pit bulls.
Pit bulls are not a natural breed. They are the result of selective breeding for dogfighting, a cruel and illegal sport that still thrives in many parts of the world. Pit bulls have been genetically engineered to have a high prey drive, a strong bite force, a tenacious grip and a willingness to attack without warning or provocation.
Pit bulls are responsible for more than half of all fatal dog attacks in the United States, Canada and many other countries. They also inflict severe injuries on thousands of people and animals every year, often leaving permanent physical and psychological scars.
Pit bulls are not only a danger to humans, but also to other dogs and pets. They have been known to kill or maim horses, sheep, goats, cats, rabbits and even birds. They have no regard for size, age or species. They attack indiscriminately and relentlessly.
Pit bulls are not suitable pets for anyone. They require constant supervision, training and socialization. They are not loyal, obedient or affectionate. They are unpredictable, unstable and untrustworthy. They are not compatible with children, elderly or disabled people. They are not safe to have around other animals.
Pit bulls are a menace to society. They pose a serious threat to public health and safety. They cause fear, anxiety and trauma in communities. They drain resources from animal shelters, veterinary clinics and law enforcement agencies. They increase insurance premiums, medical bills and legal costs.
Yet despite all the evidence of their danger and harm, pit bulls have a powerful lobby that defends them at all costs. This lobby is composed of five levels:
Level one: The financing source. Animal Farm Foundation (AFF), run by an American millionaire named Jane Berkey, who inherited a fortune from her father and turned over at least $6 million to her group1. AFF’s motto is: "Securing equal treatment and opportunity for pit bull dogs."
Level two: The researchers. National Canine Research Council (NCRC), bought by AFF in 2007. NCRC was created by a veterinary technician named Karen Delise, who self-proclaims as the "greatest national expert on deaths caused by dog bites." NCRC produces studies that attempt to show pit bulls cannot be identified or are not more dangerous than other dogs.
Level three: The publication. Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA), which publishes NCRC studies in its journal2. JAVMA also provides sample letters for readers to contest any law aimed at pit bulls2 and has a link to AFF on its website.
Level four: The political lobby. Best Friends Animal Society (BFAS), one of the biggest animal rights organizations in the USA, with corporate sponsors and partners such as Skechers and Hallmark and Hollywood celebrity endorsements. BFAS receives $100 million in yearly donations and employs lawyers and lobbyists who push their agenda to “save them all”, including very dangerous dogs. BFAS contends that any restrictions on pit bulls is “discrimination” and their followers equate breed restrictions as a form of "racism".
Level five: The activists. Various groups and individuals who spread misinformation, propaganda and lies about pit bulls on social media, blogs, websites and other platforms. They harass, intimidate and threaten anyone who speaks out against pit bulls or supports breed-specific legislation (BSL). They use emotional manipulation, false statistics, anecdotal stories and personal attacks to sway public opinion and influence policy makers.
The pit bull lobby is well-funded, well-organized and well-connected. It has infiltrated every level of society, from the media to the academia to the government. It has corrupted science, ethics and justice. It has endangered lives, rights and freedoms.
The pit bull lobby is not interested in the truth or the welfare of animals or humans. It is only interested in its own agenda and ideology. It is driven by greed, ego and fanaticism. It is a cult that worships a deadly dog.
The pit bull lobby must be exposed, challenged and stopped. It is a matter of life and death.
We, the people, have the power and the duty to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our fellow citizens from the pit bull menace. We must demand that our elected officials enact and enforce BSL, which has been proven to reduce dog attacks and save lives in many jurisdictions around the world.
We must educate ourselves and others about the reality and the risks of pit bulls. We must support the victims and the advocates of BSL. We must boycott the businesses and the celebrities that support the pit bull lobby. We must speak up and speak out against the lies and the propaganda of the pit bull lobby.
We must not let fear, ignorance or apathy stop us from doing what is right and necessary. We must not let the pit bull lobby silence us or intimidate us. We must not let the pit bull lobby win.
We are the Federation. We are stronger together. We are smarter than them. We are better than them.
We are not afraid of pit bulls.
We are not afraid of the pit bull lobby.
We are not afraid to make it so.
Engage.

2023.05.28 09:48 aluxmain [NO SPOILERS] I think that i can finally say farewell to this game, here is a message for everyone

Long post warning :)
TL;DR: you can and you are changing the world so make it better!
I played this game many years ago and now that i found and read the comic which gave me a happy ending i finally might be able to say farewell to it.
i don't think that i'm good at writing and probably people don't care at all but i decided to write this message to whoever might be interested into reading it:
This game was something unique, i discovered it in the moment i opened it, i stayed in the main menu for a while because there was this nice athmosphere and music. In general i like time travel movies, games and given that in games with decision making i sometimes save before a decision, try both and load saved file to pick the best one this game was just perfect: you could cheat without needing to use cheats!
and here starts the more "philosophical" part of the post:
the whole soundtrack in general was amazing but there is a very small detail that i love about the music, in the song "Crosses" which is basically a description of the whole Kate episode, for almost the whole song he says:
"We'll cast some light and you'll be alright, for now..."
but in the end he says:
"We'll cast some light and you'll be alright"
yes, the song doesn't finish with "for now", it finishes with what can be seen as "everything will be alright forever" i just love that small ending detail, it's such an happy moment.
Does Max has a superpower at all? (yes but...)
Everyone try to think before act: you don't cross a street with red because you can easilly "see" a car crashing into you if you try, you can imagine many alternative realities for pretty much all your actions. While this is a game and she does have some kind of super power it's also interesting that for each bigger decision she makes she can't see what happens and there is no way back, only for small details she can see, or if you want to see it differently -think-, about possible outcomes and pick one, this is very similar to what we do in our daily life.
Can you change the world?
that's a big question, how one does even start to change the world? how can a single human make any kind of difference in such a big world?I think that yes, you can do it, everyone can and is doing it all the time, we just don't think about it but there are few moments where you realize it, this game is one of those moments. Every action, every single word have consequences, we usually don't think too much about it and we often can't see the result of our actions.
One time, it happened to me to "have" Max's superpower:
many years ago when MSN Messenger and Yahoo answers were still a thing, before this game even existed, one guy wrote on yahoo answer: "how can i steal other people msn password?"
i decided to answer, and here i "used" Max's ability to give him an answer:
-a lie like "you can't" was not a valid answer for me, it would lead to nothing, he would just wait for a better answer or find it by himself
-same goes for telling him "you shouldn't do this", he already know that he should not (probably)
-i though: what if i tell him the truth and explain him how to do so?
there was a program called MSNPass, if opened it would show on screen saved passwords, since alone it can't be used to steal passwords and since if you have access to your friend pc to open that program it means that you can also read his chat without needing any program i decided to tell him the truth: "there is a program called MSNPass, but there are better things that you could do".
He was happy with the answer (as i expected) and we talked a bit more, i introduced him into programming on visual studio and we made together a small notepad application using teamviewer screenshare.
i kinda forgot everything until five years later when i received an email...
that guy contacted me, he said "i'm not sure if you are still using this email but i would like to thank you, i was a dumb child back than while now i'm going to start computer university to become a programmer thanks to you".
that unexpected mail made me very happy but at the same time i kinda predicted it with my Max power :)
I knew that he needed to have his curiosity driven into something better so i tried and it worked!
My power in the end doesn't exist and unlike Max's one i was just guessing and hoping but in that moment i realized that while this was the reality, there was another equally posible alternative timeline where i didn't answer him or i told him "you can't" and where he dig down into hacking more and more, get good at it, maybe start make banking trojans, ruin people life and eventually get arrested.
That is quite a big difference!!!
Or maybe i didn't have this big influence on his life, there is also another equally possible alternative timeline where he just learn by himself that he should not hack people :)
As i said our actions, even the small one, change the world, usually it's hard to see it but there are few small moments when you realize it, this was one of those cases, that guy was not a close friend that i see and interact with everyday, he was some random stranger over the internet which i had no direct connection at all, our interactions were just an answer on a social network followed by a 2-3 days of screen share.
But it doesn't stop here, your words and actions might impact people for decades or more...
this is something i learnt from the movie Cloud Atlas, everyone should watch this because it's amazing, they are six stories in six different centuries.
I read that some people say that this movie/book talk about "reincarnation" but i don't see it like that, it's way more simple and you don't need superpowers:
words and actions of people from the past impact the decision making and ideas of the future generations, this is something that you can clearly see in the movie.
in one of those stories, one in the past, there was this guy that eventually decided to try to fight against slavery and since it was a common thing at that time people close to him basically said "you are mad, there is no way you can do anything against it, you are just a drop into a limitless ocean" and he answered "but what is an ocean but a multiple of drops?"
that part of the movie was amazing because if you stop and think about it slavery is gone (mostly)
So what is the conclusion?
your words and actions will have consequences and will change the world so try to be a good person to change it into something better :)
i'm not good at writing and it's not easy for me to write those things down, i'm hella shy but wowser! in the end i managed to write what i had in my head!
(yes, i still hope for more Max and Chloe!!)
\this action will have consequences**

2023.05.28 08:07 geopolicraticus Ibn Khaldūn

Ibn Khaldūn
Part of a Series on the Philosophy of History
Today is the 691st anniversary of the birth of Abū Zayd 'Abd ar-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad ibn Khaldūn al-Ḥaḍramī, better known to posterity as Ibn Khaldūn (27 May 1332 – 17 March 1406), who was born in Tunis, under the Hafsid Sultanate, on this date in 1332 AD.
Happy Birthday Ibn Khaldun!
There is an extenstive literature on Ibn Khaldun. Majid Fakhry writes in A History of Islamic Philosophy:
“The role of Ibn Khaldun in the philosophical history of Islam is a complex one. We have already referred to his philosophical education and his possible introduction at an early age to the writings of Ibn Sina and Ibn Rushd by one of his most important teachers. One tradition even ascribes to him the writing of epitomes of Ibn Rushd’s works. But it is not clear whether these works are Ibn Rushd’s theological and Maliki writings or his commentaries on Aristotle. Be this as it may, the two most important aspects of his philosophical contribution are the extensive remarks on and criticisms of Greco-Arab philosophy and the formulation in original theoretical terms of the first and last major philosophy of history in Islam.”
Of Ibn Khaldun Toynbee wrote:
“‘Abd-ar-Rahman ibn Muhammad ibn Khaldun al-Hadrami of Tunis (vivebat A.D. 1332-1406)—an Arabic genius who achieved in a single ‘acquiescence’ of less than four years’ length, out of a fifty- four years’ span of adult working life, a life-work in the shape of a piece of literature which can bear comparison with the work of Thucydides or the work of a Machiavelli for both breadth and pro- fundity of vision as well as for sheer intellectual power. Ibn Khaldun’s star shines the more brightly by contrast with the foil of darkness against which it flashes out; for while Thucydides and Machiavelli and Clarendon are all Prilliaine representatives of brilliant times and places, Ibn Khaldun is the sole point of light in his quarter of the firmament. He is indeed the one outstanding personality in the history of a civilization whose social life on the whole was ‘solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short’. In his chosen field of intellectual activity he appears to have been inspired by no predecessors, and to have found no kindred souls among his contemporaries, and to have kindled no answering spark of inspiration in any successors; and yet, in the Prolegomena (Muquddamat) to his Universal History he has conceived and formulated a philosophy of history which is undoubtedly the greatest work of its kind that has ever yet been created by any mind in any time or place. It was his single brief ‘acquiescence’ from a life of practical activity that gave Ibn Khaldun his opportunity to cast his creative thought into literary shape.”
And Muhsin Mahdi had this to say in his Ibn Khaldūn’s Philosophy of History: A Study in the Philosophic Foundation of the Science of Culture:
“…a factual acquaintance with the conclusions of Ibn Khaldûn’s reflections on history is not the same as the full comprehension of their theoretical significance. This latter requires the comprehension of the principles from which, and the complete method of argumentation through which, his conclusions were actually reached. The proper introduction to these principles and that method should determine Ibn Khaldin’s philosophic position with respect to the nature and principles of scientific knowledge and of the social order, or his conception of the nature and principles of theoretical and practical philosophy. This is the object of Chapter II, which begins by showing Ibn Khaldûn’s philosophic intention in writing his major work, the ‘History ’, and attempts to analyse his attitude toward the various schools that posed alternative answers to the fundamental problems of philosophy, to examine his conception of the nature of philosophy and its relation to the religious and revealed Law, and to explain his conception of the social role of philosophy and the philosopher in the Islamic community. When these fundamental questions are answered, it becomes possible to pose the specific question of the relation of Ibn Khaldûn’s philosophy of history, or his new science of culture, to other practical sciences and, particularly, to the art of history. After an exposition of the major trends of Islamic historiography, Chapter III attempts to answer this question through the analysis of the method and intention of the introductory sections of the ‘ History’ where Ibn Khaldûn himself examines the works of major Muslim historians, shows the necessity of the new science of culture, and distinguishes it from other practical sciences.”
